Since time immemorial, the Japanese have been a stronghold for chilly stories of youkai, their ethereal entities and otherworldly creatures, encompassing kappa, oni, or kitsune. Ghost stories even had their place at the Emperor’s Palace where upper class storytellers would gather during long fall and winter nights, illuminating the ambiance with the flickering glow of a hundred candles, each extinguished as a tale reached its conclusion, inducing collective shudders amidst the deepening darkness.

For those not interested in the history of past centuries, the reverberations of fear were unmistakably felt when the Japanese “Ring” made its way into the cinemas in 1998. Since then, the awareness of the profoundly unsettling nature of stories originating from the Land of the Rising Sun has steadily burgeoned. Urban myths, like Momo, terrified the children and adolescents alike, while a whole generation of gamers was raised on franchises such as “Resident Evil,” “Fatal Frame,” and “Clock Tower.”

What distinguishes Japanese horror from its Western counterpart is the conspicuous absence of cheap jump scares, jarring cacophonies, or even explicit revelations of the source of terror. The Japanese approach is refreshingly straightforward. Those stories creep into your subconscious, rendering you slightly paranoid or, at the very least, incredibly uncomfortable and distrustful. Their power grasps you when the ending comes, leaving you uncertain if you have indeed secured the locks on your doors.

A mere year ago, a new contender emerged on the scene—Pro9ram Q, a YouTube channel that left an indelible mark. Masterfully capturing the essence of the usual TV documentary style, it draws us in, artfully masquerading as a lost media channel, with ever so slightly nostalgic fragments of local public interest stories devoid of any unsettling premise. We can witness an elderly couple leading their everyday life, a dashboard cam of some unsuspecting campers, or a journalist delving into the source of an urban legend. We are poised to dismiss it off as the mundane narrative refrains from leading us into dark places, no codes are flashing for a frame and an unexpected BANG out of frame does not make us startle.

But this is how we are welcomed—with our defenses down, our minds scarcely contemplating the true nature of what lies ahead. Even one of the most drastic episodes to date, “Exorcism,” lulls us into believing this is just a bungled attempt to record a quirky elder man at work, performing a Shinto purification ritual at his clients’ home. A full one-sixth of the initial runtime is squandered on a seemingly unrelated segment, of reaching the house in question. It serves little to none exposition for what follows.

In one of the last installments of the Q project, “Mindseeker” - we find ourselves immersed in a mesmerizing scene. A group of young individuals eagerly gathers to watch a Russian program, mistakenly presumed to be Egyptian or Latin due to the enigmatic alphabet displayed on the screen, all recorded on a VHS tape. The program's premise revolves around teaching viewers mental exercises to unlock ESP abilities. At first glance, it appears to be light-hearted amusement, with a young man gamely attempting to guess the symbols on the cards using his latent clairvoyance… and then his friends rewind the recording and tease him to try again. The expected reaction is laughter, for everyone already knows the correct answers… except this time, they are all different. A subtle shift that leaves us questioning the very fabric of reality. Telekinesis follows suit, and he succeeds in moving the balloon on the screen… during his second attempt. Finally, his endeavor to establish a telepathic connection with a girl in the TV… but, true to the enigmatic nature of the show, we are left with more questions than answers, further entwining our curiosity.

Behind the enigmatic veil of the entire project lies an alleged team of four to ten individuals—an astonishing achievement considering the production quality that rivals television standards. Not only does the series seamlessly navigate the realm of mixed media techniques, employing on-cell animation, animated cutouts, and double exposition, but the personnel involved also exude an air of striking… normality? It is nothing short of astounding to contemplate the possibility that these individuals might be mere actors, especially when compared to other shows (what ARG and horror fans got used to with the Slenderverse projects). Gathering such sizable crews, appearing so unassumingly natural, must have demanded weeks, if not months, of meticulous effort. Moreover, thanks to brilliant English subtitles, this captivating production can be relished by audiences worldwide. In no particular order either, as the sole commonality they share is their country of origin. No overarching connection or lore binds the stories together as of yet, leaving us in eager anticipation of more to come.

hello tumblr user dateamonster!! do you have any recommendations for good zombie media? my gf rlly likes zombies but has burned through a lot of the good stuff to be easily found. movies shows anime games etc, anything goes. ty!

oof good question but one im not sure im totally qualified to answer since most of the zombie media i consume is on the campier, sillier side.

i do have some somewhat more Serious zombos i enjoy tho!

the girl with all the gifts is one of my alltime favs (and ive heard the book is good too tho i havent read it) it hits a lot of the beats zombie fans will probably already be familiar with but the main character being a sort of half-zombie (makes more sense in context trust me) as well as a child born into this apocalyptic setting creates a totally new perspective and to me is one of the strongest most thoughtful pieces of work to come out of this sorta subgenre in a long time

the resident evil game series is probably a given. on the off chance she hasnt played it or watched a playthrough, that shits mandatory.

z-nation i think kinda tippytoes the line between stuff fans of, for example, the walking dead will recognize and enjoy in terms of ya know a story focusing more on the interpersonal drama of a group of survivors living through an ongoing apocalypse, and the sillier doesnt-take-itself-too-seriously stuff i personally enjoy, like the ongoing bit where theres just a big ball of entangled zombies rolling across the scenery. its the delicious junk food of tv zombies (though granted ive only watched i think the first few seasons when it was playing nonstop on syfy)

and if you want to join me in enjoying only thee most quality campy schlock..

zombieland saga! literally one of my favorite anime ever! i consider it in this sort of less serious category because the concept of undead idol girls is obviously pretty ridiculous on paper and not gonna be everyones thing, but if the premise even remotely intrigues you, please give it a shot. the story is fun, the characters are loveable and surprisingly complex beneath the typical moe girl archtype exteriors, the humor is on point but doesnt undermine the actually pretty effective emotional moments, and the music fucks! we stan!

z-o-m-b-i-e-s is like c-tier early 2000s dcom realness with a 2018 budget, better choreography, worse songs, questionable moral messaging, all reeking with a dangerous level of green hair dye and party city greasepaint fumes. ive watched it like four times. i cant totally explain it but its got like nostalgic high school musical vibes except more paranormal and much much sillier. dares to ask the question: can cheerleading end all prejudice and bring about world peace? (the answer is yes but theyll be repeating that question for three movies)

zombie prom. very similar to the above in general vibe except the music is honestly kind of good? theres a stage play and a movie which is more or less just a slightly shortened version. in a lot of ways it honestly feels like the fully realized version of z-o-m-b-i-e-s. if you watch the movie ru paul is there, whether thats an incentive or disincentive.

and to wrap it up another game you probably already know about, lollipop chainsaw. yes its problematic but i am honoring my past teenage self who averted their gaze when they walked by it on the shelves in gamestop by saying tara strong sexy cheerleader zombie slayer game is fun and good.

anyway all this to say my taste is very questionable when it comes to this subgenre but i hope u get something out of it. a lot of zombie stories kinda flop for me because the horror element gets watered down into this more actiony survive the zombo apocalypse type thing but the concept of zombies is definitely something that interests me despite this and there are definitely some good pieces of zombie media out there.

oh! and i havent read it yet, but ive heard really promising things about the book manhunt by gretchen felker-martin. not explicitly a zombie story i dont think but draws from the same place for sure. would be worth checking out i think.

Resident Evil - TV Series Review

Watched the TV series and while I didn't hate it? I didn't love it either. I get more of a "Why does this exist?" feeling from it than anything.

I dislike shows that skip around from the future to the past. It screws with the narrative and is usually fairly hokey. I just watched West World and the first two seasons were fantastic. Then, it took an entirely weird direction into this is the future this is the past and the show was no longer good. The same thing applied with Resident Evil. I could have done without the Zombie Apocalypse storyline completely. I actually thought the New Raccoon City stuff was far more compelling. Maybe that was because we were given some sort of insight into Umbrella. The actors were good for the script they were given, but the script was not very good or well thought out and there were a lot of 'modern references' that will date the show. The show felt like something the CW would put out with slightly better graphics. I will say the monsters did look good. I almost wish they had found a way to do without the Zombie Apocalypse and incorporate them into the New Raccoon City storyline instead.

All in all, it was mediocre. I'll probably not find a reason to watch it again. The characters were meh, the twists were bad, the script was very CW young teen drama. I definitely feel they would have done better if they had just forgone the name Wesker and made the series about a couple of unknown characters. It sort of felt like I was watching fanfiction and someone had made up multiple OC children and then children of OC children. Rating, 5.5/10

Star Trektrospective :Star Trek The Search For Spock

I am reviewing all the Star Trek movies,and we are onto the third film Star Trek III the Search for Spock,which I find very underrated

Plot :Spock (Leonard Nimoy ) has given his Katra (Basically his soul ) to Mccoy (DeForest Kelley) ,and according to his father Sarek (Mark Lenard ) it must be reunited with his body which resides on Genesis .So must Kirk (William Shatner ) break Star Fleet regulations ,return to Genesis ,and face a group of Klingons lead by Kruge (Christopher Lloyd) all for the possibility of saving his friend

So there is a phrase regarding Trek that I dont agree with "EVen films are good ,odds are bad ".....Which I really disagree with cause..3 isnt bad at all ....Its just not as good as 2

I think if 3 has two things going against it : One is that it doesnt feel like a movie,in which I mean it feels like a TV episode.I think the main thing is it lacks a dramatic core ,like dramtic things happen,but the goal is soley "Continue from where the last film left off " and admittedly,while I like the villain ,hes has a villain of the week flavor

The other problem is a more major one:It undoes the second movie .The second movie gave a lot of interesting things:A new planet, the revelation Kirk has a son , and the death of a beloved character .....This film undoes all of that .Now thankfully other films build onto these changes but it is mildly disappointing

That said if it is a TV episode....Its an enjoyable one . Leonard Nimoy directs this one and he emphasizes the sense of fun .We have some great jokes ,a starship heist and a fun pulpy fight scene between Kirk and our Klingon baddie on an exploding planet

Kruge is a really enjoyable bad guy,helped by being played by the marvelous Christopher Lloyd ,who while still being a vicious evil doer , nails the subtleties of the character,the sense of honor and that at his core he's just afraid of the Federation conquering his people

Other then Kruge ,I dont have much to say about new characters:Robert Hooks is a good foil for Kirk as Admiral Morrow, and we have small roles by Miguel Ferrar and John Larroquette .The most surprising role is legendary actress Dame Judith Anderson asT'lar a vulcan priestess ,who lends a sense of gravitas to a small role

Robin Curtis replaces Kirstie Allie as Saavik and I think she does a great job .Mark Lenard reprises his role as Sarek ,Spock's father from the TV series ,and he gives a wonderful performance and has a sweet line near the end of the film .Poor Merritt Butrick doesnt have a lot to do in the film as Kirks son David ,and I feel the film wastes the potential for his character

This film does mark the first time in three films that all the original cast get to show off ,George Tekai,James Doohan and Nichelle Nichols in particular get some memorable scenes .I also find it sweet that the crew are all on board with the idea of going against Starfleet for the sake of saving their friend

This is a good showcase of Shatner .Again I love that his entire motivation is just "Help my friend,costs be damned " .The boldest acting choice is when Shatners realizes the Klingons have killed someone ,and theoretically it could be seen as hammy,if not for a happy accident of Shatner falling back and missing the chair which transforms the scene into heartbreaking

The best performance has to go to Deforest Kelley as Bones ,who basically has to play both Bones,and in a way,Spock in Bones's head.He gets some great dramatic bits and some wonderful comedic scenes the best being "That green blooded son of a bitch! This is his revenge for all those arguements I won !"

Also I will admit there is one moment in this film shared between Kirk and Mccoy that is simultaniously badass but heart breaking .It involves a trap for the Klingons and it is a powerful scene

Overall while I think it is inherently flawed.....I still have a lot of fun watching this movie ,its a enjoyable adventure

I HATE PREQUELS. Hear me out.

Hi, friends. Like the title says, I hate prequels. At least, I hate them 95% of the time. I find prequels tend to worse than cheap sequels you can just retcon and I think deep down, a lot of people feel the same way.

Hear me out as to why prequels stink most of the time. Be warned that there are spoilers ahead and... I'm not going to sugarcoat anything.

1- We already know what's going to happen. - And it is especially depressing if we know the hero is going to lose in the end. Plus, what is the point of wasting my time playing a game or watching a movie when I already know exactly what is going to happen? Unless the story is going to expand upon the lore and introduce us to new characters whose own stories may continue like the Clone Wars tTV series did, what's the point? We already know Zack is going to die, we already know the Scorpion King goes bad and sells his soul, we already know Guile's best friend Charlie gets killed by M. Bison, we already know that Big Boss goes bad, and so on. I would must rather take a look at a story that will surprise me.

2- They ruin mystery elements that make the fiction fun. - For example, one of the things that made the xenomorph from the Alien series, so terrifying is that we didn't know where it came from. For all we know, that thing literally came from the underworld. But then, the prequels came along and told us that the xenomorphs are nothing more than bio-engineered monsters which makes them kind of dull now. And it's not the only fun mystery that got ruined by prequels. I didn't really want to know Big Boss's story in Metal Gear because finding out that he really was just some guy makes him less threatening. We really have to take back the art of leaving some things to the imagination.

3- Nobody asked for them. - Pardon the harshness, but it's the truth. They don't answer any questions that are relevant to the series and sometimes, they don't even follow the theme that the series has like the Scorpion King here. What place does a film about an ancient Egyptian warmonger have in a film series about mummies? It's like making a prequel TV series about Peter Parker in his elementary school days where he is just an average human being with no spider powers. You just get a high school sitcom in a lore that's supposed to be about a superhero. Don't do this, people. Don't waste your time on details that do not matter.

4- The media already has a beginning that started everything. - The Hobbit was the exception not the standard. Series like Metal Gear, Predator, Alien, Castlevania, Resident Evil and more already have beginnings that not only started everything. They are iconic. Even if things happened that lead up to that moment, it was THAT MOMENT where the story really began. You will only find THAT MOMENT in those first instalments not any prequel that you attempt to go back in time for.

5- They stink. - I am about to say something very harsh, but... 95% of the time, just like bad sequels and remakes, prequels are someone's attempt to rewrite an established story their way instead of writing a good story that may open up other possibilities or give an opportunity for the lore to be expanded. In other words, they written out of ego and not out a genuine love for the art or lore, so they wind up failing. A lot of these people don't even know the lore that well to begin with and it's clear by their work. Why are we letting them try to tell us the history if they don't know the present? No thanks.

Anyway, this is my hot take on why I hate prequels and think that 95% of the time, they do not work. What is your opinion? Let me know.

Are you in the process of watching or re-watching a series at the moment? I could never, ever picture myself rewatching a whole series ever again, you can barely get me to sit through a new one, but Girt and I are working on The Rain for the first time.

If so, how many seasons does it have? And what season are you currently on? There are three right now, and we're on two.

Has anyone you know gotten a new pet recently? Yes, my sister Misty's family adopted a corgi (I can't remember her name), and I think someone I shot pictures for once recently got a panther chameleon because she's been posting quite a few videos with him.

How old were you 10 years ago? Who were your closest friends at that point? 17, yeesh. Ten whole years ago... Jason was my boyfriend and closest friend, then there was Summer, Hannia, Girt, Alon, Maria, Megan...

Do you still speak to any of them? Summer and I talk/see each other sometimes because she's actually part of my sister's inlaws' family, Girt and I are together, and Megan and I sometimes interact over Facebook, but we don't really talk, I also have Alon on there, but she barely touches it so we don't really talk either.

Have you ever kissed someone of another race? I mean my boyfriend's father was pure Native American, but despite the fact he doesn't visibly display any traditional traits whatsoever, it'd be incorrect to say he's totally Caucasian.

Are there any races you wouldn't kiss? No, race means exactly nothing to me with relationships.

What is your favorite thing about your best friend? He is extremely trustworthy and honest. I never feel like he's hiding something from me or sugarcoating things, but he's also gentle with me. His balance in this stuff is incredible.

What do you mostly have in common with your best friend? We're very introverted. Love video games.

Do you like it when men shave their chests? If you are a guy, do you shave? I don't care.

What is your favorite kind of video game? Horror ones, specifically psychological or survival.

What can you hear right now? I'm watching Markiplier's Resident Evil 8 LP. Two years late, but... I'm apparently having a streak of wanting to watch his stuff again.

Do you think it’s okay for kids to have cellphones? Yes, HOWEVER I definitely support limiting screen time and gauging what they're allowed to do on there with age but especially maturity. At the very beginning, I'm all for being able to call your guardians, because that cellphone might save your baby's life in horrible situations like abductions. From there, you be the judge based on your unique child and various factors relating to them.

Do you watch anime? If so, what are some of your favorites? Yeah, they can have very interesting plots. My favorite is Fullmetal Alchemist (including the Brotherhood iteration of it, idk which I enjoy more), and I'm also fond of Ginga Densetsu Weed and Deadman Wonderland. I've seen a decent chunk of Attack on Titan and was also into it.

Do you have any siblings? If so which one of them do you get along with the best? I have six technically, but I only know five. I don't really know which one I get along with best; I feel like Katie and I have the most compatibility, but I don't feel particularly "close" to any of my siblings and I fucking hate that.

What’s your favorite TV show? And who’s your favorite character from it? Meerkat Manor is my favorite show of all time, and Mozart was my favorite character.

Have you violated any of the 10 Commandments? If so, what? Yeah; I don't give a fuck about honoring God's name or even respecting him in any way or form.

Do people think you look like either of your parents? Does that offend you? I've heard both, and no. I'll admit as a kid having someone say I looked like my dad was mildly offensive just because I was a girl and he's a man, but I certainly don't give a shit now because I know what they mean, just features.

Do you prefer regular bacon or turkey bacon? Regular, turkey bacon is gross.

Do you think it’s weird when people talk to their pets like people? No? I honestly think that's probably very healthy for the animal, and the owner too. I think it strengthens bonds, and it must certainly make the pet feel included and like family to be treated like how you treat other people.

What is the last place, other than home, that you stayed overnight? Uhhhh I feel like I haven't done that in over a year now; I'm quite sure the last time was when I was in the hospital last... March or May, whatever it was.

What is the furthest you have traveled alone? Illinois.

Have you ever dated someone simply for their looks? No.

Have you ever been drunk? No, only lightly tipsy.

What was the name of the main character in the last book you read? Blue, in the book I'm currently reading. The last book I finished, Qibli was the protagonist.

Do you prefer pizza or hot dogs? Pizza.

What is your favorite pizza topping? If I could only pick one, I'd say just regular ol' pepperoni.

Is your dad a jerk? I think he's... oblivious, if anything. He doesn't TRY to be mean, he's really very funny and playful but majorly socially unfiltered. Basically, I think he's capable of being unpleasant, but it's rarely malicious. He's just an old grampa with a few screws kinda loose lol

Is anyone in your family currently in the military? No, not that I know of.

What is your favorite dog breed? Meh I always answer this with such a big list, I love so many. I have been newly very into shar peis, though. There's an Instagram one that I'm obsessed with.

Have you found any gray hairs on your head? No, that might be the day I crumble lol

Do you own a bikini? Oh hell no, I haven't since I was a teenager.

If you were a rockstar, what color guitar would you have? I want to say pink, but REALISTICALLY, I'm not sure I would. Probably mostly black, and it'd probably have skulls and/or occult-ish stuff on it.

Would you rather have a personal chef or personal house cleaner? HOUSE CLEANER.

Do you have any zits on your face right now? Ugh I have one on the upper right of my hairline right now. You can't see it unless I pull my hair back, thankfully. It's not a terrible one, at least.

What are three of your favorite bakery items? Cinnamon rolls, donuts, muffins.

What are three creative hobbies you enjoy? Writing, photography, drawing.

What are three things you like about church? I like how they look and that is literally it. Besides appearance, I only have negative shit to say about them. I grew up forced into church and will never set foot into a sermon again.

What was the last type of pie you ate? It was probably trying an apple or peach pie, I'm not a fan.

Which book did you love when you were younger? The Warriors series by S.E. Hinton was a major obsession.

Which book series could you read again? ^ I actually kinda wanna get back into that once I'm caught up in Wings of Fire, but idk, it's been so so many years that I don't even remember where I stopped, but I know I was deeeep in, so I'd hate re-reading it all. I don't re-read stuff.

Tell me about your first breakup, if you had one. I mean that *technically* woulda been with Aaron, and that was... nothing, given it was a very puppy love situation; I wasn't ready for dating yet. Have you ever had to do a doubletake on someone 'cuz they were so pretty? Oh I've totally done this with Alon at some point, god when I look back I can't believe I never realized THEN that my ass ain't straight lmfao

Is your last ex currently in a relationship? I have no idea, I don't keep up with her at all; even if I'm curious of how she is/what she's up to, I don't allow myself to look at any of her socials.

Who was the last female you were introduced to? ummmm I'm actually not sure? Probably a doctor, realistically.

Who was the last male you were introduced to? A family friend's friend, Larry.

Do you use a nightlight? Yeah; it's a little Saturn lamp that I can change the colors of.

What’s your opinion on border control? Look dude I don't even want borders TO exist; every single goddamn person has as much right to be on this earth in any specific location as anyone else, get the hell outta here with that "illegal human" horseshit.

What are your favorite things to create? Feral meerkat OCs.

What’s something you prefer to keep private? My sexual life.

Are you good at prioritizing? NO

If you’re not religious, were you ever? What made you lose faith? Yes, and fucking life itself. A few months back I made a massive FB post regarding why I left my faith, and in the end it really made me realize that I have bad religious wounds, maybe even trauma but I'm not 100% sure if it's to that extent. I just know I'm extremely hateful towards religions like Christianity, and it's something I actually recently broke down over because I WANT to chill out with how the very topic sets me on fucking fire; I'm never going to like faiths like those, but I want to be kinder towards their existence and just stop being SO bothered by them and other people having them. It prompted me to try to find a therapist specializing in religious trauma (didn't get far btw, thanks shitty insurance <3).

What feeling do you have the most difficulty in expressing? Envy, most likely. It makes me very uncomfortable.

When was the last time you looked at your significant other/crush’s Facebook profile? Oh jesus I'm not sure, I never look at it, really. Especially when he touches FB like, never, and never updates anything, what would even be the point?

Halfway There Day

July 2 marks the halfway point of the year as @ProgressBar202_ on Twitter will tell you, as does Kiff from earlier this year. So I want to take this halftime post and share some of my favorite things from the year so far.

Games

Note that I am only putting new(ish) games from this year that I played to the end here.

Metroid Prime: Remastered - One of my absolute favorites from the GameCube/Wii was shadowdropped on us back in February and I had a ball going back to it.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe - Another one I liked back in the day and had a good time revisiting. Still have yet to do some of the bonus stuff, but it packs a good amount of said stuff in the package.

Fire Emblem Engage - Maybe my top alternate pick for my favorite game of the year so far. I got into the characters and story and found the changes to the gameplay to be, er, engaging. I'm even contemplating a second run in the near future, which has to say something.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line - The other top alternate pick for my favorite game of the year. It's a sheer love letter to game music that left me beyond thrilled the series returned.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Now my top contender for my favorite game of the year. It takes everything I liked in the previous game and builds upon it in so many ways. I've still just barely scratched the surface of the game even after playing to the end of the story and I'm sure I'm going to go back at some point.

Dead Space - I never played the original game but I now have to imagine this is the way to play it. The setting and story were both engaging as was the gameplay that did keep me playing longer than was probably wise on some occasions.

Resident Evil 4 - My other -other- pick for my favorite game of the year, maybe? I had some grumblings after I finished it once but going back to it again with some upgraded stuff and shifted expectations helped me to really appreciate what it does.

Lot of good stuff played this year, but now I think I'm shifting to catchup mode for the next two months while we enter a slower period. Stuff like Mario, Sonic, and so much more dropping in the fall makes that season even more exciting now!

Movies

Bit of a shorter list here, admittedly.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie - Maybe the most biased I've ever been toward a movie because this franchise may be the single most important entertainment media to me, but I can accept that and still have a blast watching this.

Fast X - I watched it shortly after it opened and mildly guffawed my way through the whole thing. This franchise just gets more ridiculous and I'll be there for the "end."

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse - Yup, pretty good like everyone's saying. Animation is quite superb in a lot of it too. I'm skeptical we'll get the next one anytime soon but I'll be fine with waiting, especially if they can get things done better on the production end too.

...And that's it. Well, least this month has some stuff like Mission: Impossible and your pick of Barbie/Oppenheimer. Still a lot of ones I can catch up with too!

TV/Shows

Kiff - My favorite new show of the year so far. Lot of charm with a fun artstyle that keeps me coming back.

Hailey's On It! - I need to catch up, but the premise has led to some wacky fun so far.

Then I won't list them because they're existing shows, but stuff like Big City Greens and The Ghost and Molly McGee continued bringing the goods.

Lot of catchup to do here with Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and the next Zerocalcore Netflix show along with a bunch of new episodes of other stuff. Getting increasingly antsy as to when the last season of Hilda will drop too...

Anyway, I'm sure I'll have more to say on stuff in the future. Felt good to get back to a longer writing post like this!

Resident Evil 2002 Movie Review

I grew up on a variety of genres as my parents really didn't care too much about age limits on what movies me and my brother watched. We were also too poor to afford cable after I was 8, so most of what my generation grew up on, we didn't. So we watched our giant wall of VHS films. We had Disney movies, ninja movies, a shelf dedicated to zombie and monster movies, a lot of Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th movies (including Freddy v Jason), and a lot of comedy and rom-com movies that were again meant for 13 up, not little six-year-old me(which not complaining about btw just find it funny compared to my peers). My fave movie at 6 was 28 Days Later. Because of that, I would say I'm a connoisseur of horror and fantasy(I was the weird one lol), and of course that led to me becoming obsessed with the Resident Evil game series.

I decided to rewatch the Resident Evil movies since I'm sick and have mothing better to do. And man, do I have some opinions on the first one.

The first Resident Evil movie is objectively the most quality Resident Evil movie that Paul WS Anderson out of the lackluster bunch. The first one genuinely held a degree of suspense, and ominous and foreboding feeling in the quiet, empty rooms and when we think the characters of the film are alone. There's actual tension regarding the timer to get out of the HIVE. You actually feel bad and start rooting for the characters as they're picked off one by one. The movie still held the spirit of the games in that the true villain of the events isn't just the mindless zombies, or the Red Queen, or even Spence, but that it's the cold, selfish greed of corporations that give no fucks about how many people die, or how torturous their deaths are, only their profits and data matter to the corporations, which is something that is immediately lost within the sequel. Not to mention I'm a total slut for practical effects and minimal CGI effects, which this movie nailed.

Although a big, and probably unpopular reason, why I think the first one was genuinely good, even if it is a bit cheesy, is BECAUSE they used 0 characters from the game. Hear me out! The biggest thing everyone, and mean everyone, focuses on is how exact to the OG character the new depiction is whenever something(game, book, reboot, etc) is adapted into a movie or a TV show. Everyone has such high expectations for what they expect that forget that a movie or tv show are fundamentally different in how the story and characters are structured and that it's near to impossible to directly translate the original media into a film or show. What we should be more focused on is whether or not they capture the spirit of the story and characters in question. In Resident Evil (2002), since they eliminated the original game characters(OGC), that gives them more creative room to do what they want with the original movie characters(OMC), creative room with the environment, and creative room to focus on the core value of Resident Evil as a whole: corporate greed is the true monster. And something that the movies does that I found more interesting than in the games was how they created an origin for Nemesis, through Matt. A man searching for his sister with few clues other than her workplace and that she had a contact willing to sell the company out. He struggled so much, only to find that she's dead, and now has to team up with the contact, Alice, to escape the HIVE only to be kidnapped by inethical scientists who forced him into the NEMESIS program, and effectively wiped his memory by the sequel. Which yes is technically bringing in an OGC but the movie arguably handles it very well and makes Nemesis more tragic and compelling than a lab-grown experiment for STARS specifically. If only the sequel had stuck to that instead of shoe-horning in the "STAAAARS" thing as well as dragging in random OGC and straught up retconning the time difference between the end of the first film, and the beginning of the second film. Or at the very least have Matt, now Nemesis, focus entirely on Alice, no one else, and of the other OGC characters brought in, limit to just Carlos.

Overall, 7/10 for Resident Evil (2002). I may do reviews for the other films, but warning the ONLY ONE getting a mildy good review is the Resident Evil Extinction.

Non-anime Asian TV Shows that I liked

This is just a short list of some Asian TV shows I liked, list is not exhaustive. Thank you @cautionworksstuff for encouraging me to do this since you wanted to know more about other foreign TV shows other than anime.

When I say non-anime, it means shows that are not Japanese animated series.

1. Kingdom [Netflix] (South Korea)

This series hits HARD. It’s an original Korean Netflix series. Now, there’s a lot of shows/movies that are named “Kingdom”, so let me clear about this one: this is the one that is set with a Zombie apocalypse during the Joseon period.

It follows the story of the Crown Prince who is being framed for treachery by his evil stepmom (the Empress) and her clan, as soon as his father died. In the midst of that, a disease outbreak happens that turns everyone into zombies, and the Prince struggles to avoid being defeated by the corrupted government officials as well as to save his people from the zombie apocalypse.

What makes this one stand out from series/movies like The Walking Dead are two things: 1) the political setting - while there is a zombie outbreak, it’s also the battle for power, 2) the historical setting - the guns used here are very limited, and the science/medicine explained behind this outbreak is not like “oh due to biotech experiment gone wrong”, 3) unlike Walking Dead, they actually explained the cause of the illness, the cures and the weaknesses.

They are going to come up with a new one-episode spin-off(?) this month.

2. Girl from Nowhere (Thailand)

This is also available on Netflix. This series follow a character named Nanno, who goes to various schools as the new girl. In the second episode, she’s revealed to be some sort of immortal entity that goes on to expose the sins and wrongful acts of parents, teachers and students. She then punishes them as some form of karma. Beware, some episodes are downright disturbing and only for mature audience.

I don’t have a confirmation of this, but according to Wikipedia and actress Chicha Amatayakul, the character Nanno draws inspiration from Junji Ito’s Tomie, and the similarities are very obvious. From the way the people react to her, the hairstyle and the even to the beauty mark near the eye, the similarities are very obvious.

One difference though, I must say, is that Nanno is an extremely charming character as compared to Tomie. You will really root for her and can’t help but like her presence, even if she’s a little scary. When I read Tomie, I didn’t exactly felt the same magnetic pull as Nanno did for me. Season 1 was really good. Season 2 was more brutal but I think Season 1 was slightly better.

3. Trese (Philippines)

This was actually based on a Filipino comic series, with the same name. I had actually waited for this series to be animated. This series features Filipino supernatural beings. I had always wondered how it’ll be like if there was a cool anime about Filipino mythological creatures, such as the manananngal, aswang, tikbalang etc. I think their designs and stories are interesting and not very talked about in the media.

I had once complained about this. We have so many interesting Filipino mythological creatures, but why do we focus on mostly drama series on love and family, and not come up with a horror series featuring them?

This one’s available on Netflix as well, and it’s in three audios: English, Filipino and Japanese. I do recommend the Filipino audio because the pronunciation of the creatures are better. But that might be just me listening to my native language.

Although, just a tiny criticism - there are only six episodes so far. All in less than 30 minutes. This was an issue for me and also my family who had watched it because we felt the pacing was too fast. They didn’t explain what the creatures were, what they do, which can be confusing for people who are not familiar with the mythology. Yeah, I really think it’s because the pacing was fast due to the small number of episodes. If they slowed down, it would be great. Hopefully we get more episodes the next season.

4. Meteor Garden (Taiwan) [2001] OR Boys over Flowers (South Korea) OR Hana Yori Dango (Japan)

This was adapted from a manga called “Hana Yori Dango” (Boys over Flowers). It has been adapted in numerous shows, with Japan doing the first live action film in 1995.

The one that I had watched is the Taiwanese drama version, Meteor Garden (2001 version). There was also a Korean drama adaptation called “Boys over Flowers”. I didn’t watch that one but quite a number of my friends did. There was also the Japanese adaptation, as well as Thai and Chinese adaptation of it. I can’t say for sure which one is the best because I only remember watching the Taiwanese (2001) version and it’s close to my heart. The Taiwanese (2001), South Korean and Japanese drama versions are often being compared. I’ll let you guys decide based on this information.

I don’t remember much from the plot, although it was this drama was very hyped back then.

This was the summary on Wikipedia:

It tells the story of Tsukushi Makino, a girl from a middle class family, whose mother enrolled her in an elite high school to compete with the families from her husband's company. While at Eitoku, she encounters the F4, a gang of four young men who are children of Japan's wealthiest families, and who bully anyone that gets in their way.

5. The Little Nyonya [2008] (Singapore)

Saving the last for the one that resides a special place in my heart, and perhaps for a lot of people in Singapore.

Words cannot describe how much this was well-liked in Singapore. I remember everyone praising this. This was hands-down one of THE BEST drama ever produced in Singapore. I remember coming home, waiting at I think 8pm? Just to tune into local TV and then watch this show for a good 40minutes. I know they did a remake in China, which I didn’t watch, but I highly recommend the Singaporean version (since it’s the original and the setting is in Singapore/Malaysia anyway).

This series really introduced the Peranakan culture to the Singaporean audience. I like to think this story has two parts where it follows the story of a Nyonya (Peranakan Chinese woman).

The first part’s setting is during WW2. Huang Ju Xiang, a woman born into a Peranakan family and her mother was a 2nd wife. Because of her mother’s status, she’s been ostracised by her family and is tasked to do the household like a servant. She meets a Japanese man and yeah, since it’s in the midst of WW2, their love story was kinda “forbidden” too. The first part is actually my favourite.

The second part follows the story of their daughter, Yue Niang Yamamoto. This story is longer and Yuening has to face the same type of ostracisation her mother had endured by the Huang family.

Trivia: The movie, which he wrote in college and was in development for 16 years, is strongly inspired by Del Toro’s personal memories, especially his relationship with his uncle, who supposedly came back as a ghost. It is also included among the "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" edited by Steven Schneider. Although filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is Mexican, this film is set in the Spanish countryside (largely filmed in Madrid) that’s why it’s on the Spanish list. The Devil’s Backbone has all of the impactful elements of spirituality, horror, and the supernatural that come up again and again in Del Toro’s work. This film has been referred to as the “brother film” of one of Del Toro’s best known works, Pan’s Labyrinth.

Description: “Late-night TV host Angela and her cinematographer are following the fire service on a call to an apartment building, but the Spanish police seal off the building after an old woman is infected by a virus which gives her inhuman strength.”

Trivia: The movie was filmed chronologically in real locations (no sets were built for the movie). The actor’s were never given the script in its entirety and didn’t know what was going to happen to their characters until the day of filming. The movie is also a big inspiration for the horror survival game Outlast.

Considered The Blair Witch Project of zombie movies, REC had a lot of competition in the found footage style (it came out the same year as George Romero’s Diary of the Dead and the first Paranormal Activity movie). It more than holds its own among them, so much so that an American remake called Quarantine came out the next year. Director Jaume Balagueró keeps the movie disturbingly real and doesn’t fall prey to jump scare after jump scare.

Trivia: Based on the true story of 18-year-old Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro. I won’t go too far into it because we may do an episode on it in the future but if you want spoilers, watch the movie (if you dare).

Directed by Paco Plaza (same as REC), the possession theme is done over and over again in horror but this movie is a terrifying and fresh take.

The Bar (2017)

Who Can Kill A Child? (1976) - Tells the story of a happy couple, two English tourists who decide to vacation on a secluded island in the Mediterranean. There they discover – almost too late- that the island has been taken over by a group of murderous children.

The Baby’s Room (2006) - Featured on Six Films to Keep You Awake at Night. A new family renovates and moves into a grand old house. Nervous first-time mom installs a baby monitor but hears mysterious sounds on the other side. Once they install a high-tech video baby monitor, what they see chills them to the bone.

Sleep Tight (2011) - Apartment concierge Cesar is a miserable person who believes he was born without the ability to be happy. His self-appointed task is to make life hell for everyone around him, a mission in which he has great success. It has big home invasion/stalker vibes.

Timecrimes (2007) - A man accidentally gets into a time machine and travels back in time nearly an hour. Finding himself will be the first of a series of disasters of unforeseeable consequences. It sounds like a “Happy Death Day” type of plot (but proceeding it by a decade).

Thesis (1996) - Angela is doing her thesis on the effect of violence in the media when she discovers a snuff film. This discovery leads her down a dark path where she must confront her greatest fears and question everybody around her.

Witching and Bitching (2013) - One article I read said it perfectly, “What Shaun of the Dead did for zombies and What We Do in the Shadows did for vampires, Witching & Bitching essentially did for the cinematic depiction of witches, albeit on a less visible scale.” Great pick if you’re looking for something a bit more lighthearted.

Mexico

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

In an effort to escape her reality she plunges into Pan's Labyrinth, a mystical world at the border of her own.

Trivia: Guillermo del Toro is famous for compiling books full of notes and drawings about his ideas before turning them into films, something he regards as essential to the process. He left years worth of notes for this film in the back of a cab, and when he discovered them missing, he thought it was the end of the project. However, the cab driver found them and, realizing their importance, tracked him down and returned them at great personal difficulty and expense. Del Toro was convinced that this was a blessing and it made him ever more determined to complete the film. Del Toro also repeatedly refused offers from Hollywood producers, in spite of being offered double the budget, provided the film was made in English. He didn't want any compromise in the storyline to suit the "market needs" (he even did the English subtitles himself). The film received 22 minutes of applause at the Cannes Film Festival and in 2007, it became one of the few fantasy films ever nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars. It’s another on the list "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" edited by Steven Schneider with The Devil’s Backbone. It was on more than 130 top 10 lists in 2006. It is also the 5th highest grossing foreign language film in the US.

Trivia: The film used make-up and special effects techniques never before done in Mexico. Director Isaac Ezban was influenced by B-movies of the 50s and 60s as well as TV shows and movies like “The Twilight Zone”, “The Thing”, and “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”.

We Are What We Are (2010)

With two detectives hot on their tail, the family of cannibals strains to maintain their family traditions in a modern urban environment.

There was an English language remake in 2013 (86% on Rotten Tomatoes) with Wyatt Russell and Odeya Rush (Lady Bird, Dumplin’, and Goosebumps)

We Are The Flesh (2016) - A joint French-Mexican production released in Spanish as Somos la carne, this post-apocalyptic nightmare involves a brother and sister who roam the land desperately seeking food until a kindly old man takes them in under the condition that they help him renovate an abandoned building. Oh, and they also have to have sex with one another while he watches. And after he breaks their will by getting them to do that, he makes them do all sorts of other things. This film was one of only four in Mexico to receive a “D” rating—which is reserved for subject matter that is considered extremely disturbing and/or pornographic.

The Witch’s Mirror (1962) - An abusive and cheating husband kills his wife so that he can be with his mistress. The woman’s godmother was a witch who originally tried casting a spell on a mirror to protect her from domestic violence, but the spell failed. Still, she is able to bring the woman back from the grave, and the two witches set out to destroy the evil woman-beater.

Here Comes The Devil (2012) - A married couple lose their children while on a family trip near some caves in Tijuana. The kids eventually reappear without explanation, but it becomes clear that they are not who they used to be, that something terrifying has changed them.

Cord (2015) - On a post-apocalyptic world of never-ending winter, a sparse cast of outsiders live underground. Due to their unsanitary conditions, sexual contact has become dangerous. Masturbation has become the paradigm of sexual experience and an array of low-tech devices with this purpose has come into existence. In this bleak reality, a dealer of such machines a sex addict make a deal: she will allow him to experiment new devices on her body in exchange of pleasure. Soon however, their relationship goes out of control.

With a budget of just six thousand dollars, it was filmed using a handheld high-definition digital single-lens reflex camera (the Canon EOS 5D Mark II), 2 handheld lamps, and a couple of lightbulbs over a time period of just four days. The claim that the movie was filmed in one continuous take are suspect. The Mark II camera can only record up to 15 minutes of continuous video at a time. Uruguay's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 84th Academy Awards 2012.

Trivia: The Entity has been billed as Peru's first 3D horror film and to have been loosely based on true stories. Review websites Flickering Myth and Nerdly commented that the movie suffered from being too overly familiar to pre-existing works (Blair Witch, The Ring).

Hidalgo is still at the wheel so its chances of success are high.

After Cepeda tells him he knows where a murderer called the Monster of Babahoyo buried a young female victim, Bonilla posts bail in the hopes that he'll learn more about the crime. Bonilla finds the girl's body, but, as he nears the scoop of his career, it looks as if Cepeda might be withholding some key details.

Trivia: Inspired by a true story? As well as being both a Cannes and TIFF favourite, Cronicas is the official submission of Ecuador for the 'Best Foreign Language Film' category of the 77th Academy Awards in 2005, it was produced by Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) This is John Leguizamo’s first film in Spanish. He said he felt awkward talking in Spanish while acting, like he didn't know the language.

English Language Horror

Critics Consensus: Silent House is more technically proficient and ambitious than most fright-fests, but it also suffers from a disappointing payoff.

Description: Sarah is working with her father and uncle to renovate an old family home to prepare it for sale. Long vacant, the house has no utilities, forcing the trio to rely on battery-operated lanterns to light their way. Sarah becomes separated from her relatives and soon finds she is trapped inside the cabin, with no contact with the outside world. Panic turns to real terror as the young woman experiences events that become increasingly ominous.

Trivia: Elizabeth Olsen (Wandavision) The plot is based on a true story that occurred in the 1940s in a small village in Uruguay. Contrary to the marketing's claim that the film was shot in one uninterrupted take, the entire movie was actually shot to mimic one continuous real-time take, with no cuts from start to finish, as a result the time span of the film's plot is exactly 86 minutes. It was shot in roughly 10 minute segments then carefully edited to hide the cuts.

Night of the Living Dead (1968) - This along with the rest of the Dead series are the work of George A. Romero, whose father is from Cuba.

Ash vs. Evil Dead - I love the Evil Dead movies and although this series wasn’t perfect (I’m sure die-hard fans will say it's far from it), I still think it kept to the heart of the main story. Bruce Campbell is obviously perfect and the addition of Lucy Lawless is amazing, it’s really Puerto Rican actor Ray Santiago that steals the show.

The Others (2001) - Directed by globally renowned Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar, The Others starring Nicole Kidman is a Spanish gothic horror movie that combines elements of the supernatural, psychological, and mystical. It focuses on the strange events that occur at the estate of a woman and her young children, plagued by spirits in the aftermath of WWII. It has the distinction of being the only English-language Spanish movie to be given the Best Film Award at Spain's national film awards, the Goyas. In total, the movie has seven Goya Awards, including for Best Director. Although it might not read as particularly “Spanish,” it was produced, written and filmed all in Spain, shooting in Cantabria, Northern Spain and Madrid.
