AITA for joking that my sister should get a girlfriend when she's trying to get a boyfriend?

I (21 X) have an older sister (23 F) who has made some jokes in the past about finding fictional women "hot", even though she had a boyfriend at the time. I'm not saying she's definitely bi, since she's, well, homophobic, and anyone can objectively find anyone attractive, but when she makes these "jokes" about finding certain women hot, I say she should get a girlfriend, a cottagecore girlfriend specifically.

My sister is vegan, wants to own a farm, and homeschool her kids (bc she had some developmental disabilities that were severely mishandled in both public and private schools). She also has some physical disabilities that were unfortunately the reason her ex-fiance (man) broke it off with her.

As a fellow queer person, you hear all the jokes about all the labels, and while I know lesbians aren't by nature more wholesome than het couples, I know that some woman somewhere would be happy to love my sister. My sister was devastated by her ex breaking up with her, and she fell into a bit of a downward spiral regarding her future and kept saying that no one would ever stay with her due to medical reasons.

Now, I visited her for New Year's, and she starts talking about this older man she's been crushing on. He gave her his facebook (blegh) and we went through his posts. There were some cute posts about his nieces, some generic messages, but then there were some, imo, concerning right wing memes. My sister has told me that this man is a decade older than her, recently divorced, former military, current private security, and she didn't find any of this to be too concerning, so I let her enjoy the crush, since she's feeling hopeful about her future again.

Flashforward to last week, I'm talking to my sister on the phone, she tells me she's gone over to his place for dinner and movies a few times (okay) and he LET HER HOLD ONE OF HIS AR-15s WITH NO TRAINING! He's planning on taking her to a gun range once they're "official" to learn how to shoot and my sister is over the moon! I mean, I'm glad that she's happy and healing, but why This guy?

Anyway, I was lamenting to my fellow gay college friends about the situation and why couldn't my sister "just find a nice cottagecore lesbian"? Someone who is not part of my friend group overheard and said that I'm being an asshole for saying that. I kinda get where they're coming from, but it was a call-back joke to friends who I knew would know the previous joke I was referencing to lighten the tension of a relatively small problem. Really, my sister's new "boyfriend" may be a completely normal and nice dude, I've never met him irl.

Well, today's the day! Hilda comes to an end. I figured now more than ever is time I make this post on just…how I feel about this incredible show ending and why it means so much to me…and why I'm grateful to Luke Pearson and the whole Hilda team. So, long post below ahead!

I found Hilda in 2018 via a post on the Gravity Falls sub of the trailer. Right from the start, something felt special about this show. And like many, I tuned in to watch it when it began. I didn't know what would be in store as I began it, but I was excited. This was at the end of the summer as GF hype for Lost Legends and the box set died down. So, getting in to a new show seemed like the best idea. It took literally hearing that theme song for me to instantly fall in love with Hilda. There was something so familiar and wholesome just bursting out of that opening. It was a feeling hard to really explain. By episode 3 and specifically the ending of it…I knew I had my next favourite show.

Everything about Hilda just felt perfect to me. The animation was incredible, Hilda as a character was enjoyable and full of life, the story felt fresh even if the core concept seemed familiar and all in all, I just loved the atmosphere this show radiated. It also made me so happy to see Canada have a part in Hilda. The Canadian animation industry is one I love given how much of a part of my childhood it was. And so to see it have a hand in this incredible show just made me so happy. Mercury Filmworks did amazing with Hilda. And I think that's how I began to understand why Hilda feels so familiar; it reminds me of those old cartoons I grew up on. Those Canadian Nelvana shows that were so wholesome & yet so fun to watch…while also not afraid to be bold. Hilda was that kind of show for a new generation!

I also didn't shy away from poking some nods to Gravity Falls. It was a great way to help spread Hilda's existence to more people and to this day I get messages from people who tell me they found Hilda because of my tweets, or videos or more. That means the world and I am grateful to have helped you discover this show. And like any show I fell in love with, I also bough the books and other merch for it. The Hilda graphic novels were amazing to read and see how the show grew from them, the figurine still just fits in my shelf, and the tie in books and more are always fun to collect. I'll miss it. Not to mention the memes…of which I made a few. The Hilda fandom is insane, yet so funny. Like all fandoms it has its ups and downs but I've met some amazing people because of Hilda and some who I remain great friends with. You know who you are <3

Hilda's conclusion means that the last of my holy trinity shows is now over…and with that, the end of an era. Truthfully, IDK what my plans are post Hilda. It was the last show still airing that I truly was 110% passionate about. That's not to say there aren't other shows, But there will never be another Hilda for me. Hilda is a show unlike any other I have seen. Yeah, perhaps it's not the most popular or the biggest or the best cartoon out there. But OMG, no other show since ever made me as happy and passionate as Hilda did. It's one of a kind!

I said in 2018 that Hilda is everything out of a cartoon that I wanted. I still believe that.

No cartoon is perfect and our definition of perfection is our own. If you ask me though…Hilda is the closest cartoon I have ever come across to my definition of perfection!

With that, while I am heartbroken to bid farewell to Hilda…I am happy I got to experience this show as it aired. I'm grateful for all the memories I made in the 5 years I had it. I'm grateful for the adventure and above all else…I'm grateful to have seen Hilda! ❤️

Any other asexuals hate how inherently sexualized it feels like everything is? Like, not just the things everyone hates being oversexualized (pigtails, gothic fashion, etc.), but like every single little thing?

Why do I have to be a "sanrio obsessed subby s/o" and have a "soft dom bf"? Why is it so difficult to find bf, gf, s/o memes without sexual dynamics or kinks being included every time?

I follow a handful of wholesome artists that I've found bc they tend to make memes with cute little animal character and for some reason, it's the only time I can see things like that without having to go in and edit it bc I don't relate to the part about being a "goth dommy mommy" or wanting to be degraded by my partner.

I also feel like this is way more common (if not almost exclusively seen) with memes directed towards women and femmes bc, as we all know, to be a woman is to perform and the fem-aligned can only exist on the spectrum of "real person whose sexual proclivities are at the forefront of their personality" and "object for my fantasies to be projected upon". Bc it seems if you don't offer your body, you offer nothing in this culture.

Idk if this is exclusively an ace experience or if anybody outside the ace spectrum feels this way or if this is just a me problem, but it feels wack.

Okay that turned into way more serious and preachy of a post than I intended, holy hell 💀 lemme know what y'all think and if you disagree, pls be nice and respectful about it.

Side note: I know not everyone is ace and a lot of people do in fact enjoy and relate to these kinds of memes and that's why they exist lol I think it's just they way it feels like they're the overwhelming majority is what got me in my mood today

Sakura’s get ready with me for a day at work would be the most anyone sees Sasuke online because they live together. Also has a ton story times because she lives with Naruto and Sasuke and is buddy buddy with Shisui who always gets her (and others) into questionable situations 🤣

Naruto is definitely in everyone’s face at the shop. He’s using Kakashi’s looks for likes, doing TikTok dances with Sakura and Sai (they have to show Sai how to do it 10x but he always gets it eventually), mukbang, would you rathers, pranks, etc..

Sai’s is spot on. It’s art on top of art and teaching techniques he’s learned. Also the one to get into accidental arguments with people because he genuinely wants to know where they’re coming from when they’re being rude. But also the guy that makes video montages of his (muse) GF.

I can see Kakashi being the typical social media person… but he’s also a fanboy and more likely probably has a cosplay account he feignsignorance about and writing fanfics under an alias. It’s definitely an iykyk sort of deal. Don’t ask why there’s foundation that can cover tattoos at his place even though Rin doesn’t use that brand and Obito would look horrid doing his own makeup.

Yamato’s has any and everything nature related; forging, drone videography of the woods, outdoor cooking with firemen (aka Genma and Itama). Very cute wholesome stuff.

What made you ship it? They just fit so well together and have many things in common with how everyone sees them and their struggle with holding up to a reputation and all, also big strong softy x small gremlin is peak dynamic

What's your favorite thing about the ship? I love their aesthetic and almost opposite personalities

Unpopular opinion on the ship? Nothing really

Pyrruby (Ruby x Pyrrha): don't ship

Why don't I ship it? I prefer them as just friends, or even close friends unlike what canon did with them. They're good together just not as gfs

What would've made you like it? Nothing lol it's not bad or anything but yeah, just friends

Anything positive to say about it? Still leagues better than Arkos, also it's cute

Freezerburn (Weiss x Yang): ship!

What made you ship it? The meme potential, I'm not even joking this ship doesn't have nearly as much angst potential as the others and I love it, just a cute lil funny ship

Favorite thing about the ship? The dynamic is hilarious but also has alot of fluff potential

Unpopular opinion on it? Definitely don't want it to be canon, I'm not with ships being within the same team whatsoever

Purrha (Blake x Pyrrha): don't ship

Why don't I ship it? It just doesn't click for me, they don't have anything in common that I can think of nor are they on the "opposites attract" side, they just exist

What would've made you like it? Maybe if they shared something or a plot point that would've helped with putting them together idk

Anything positive to say about it? The ship name is funny? XD

Violyn (Vi x Caitlyn): don't ship but I don't mind it being canon (to make things clear I'll be talking about the show version of their characters not the game, I prefer the game's)

Why don't you ship it? I don't think they fit? Or I'm just not interested enough in Caitlyn (unlike her game counterpart) so it makes it harder to care about the ship as a whole

What would've made you like it? Put game Caitlyn instead lol

Anything positive to say about it? Good funny scenes and they had nice build up, it wasn't rushed nor shoved too much in our face to make me dislike it

Sulemio (Suletta x Miorine): ship I think?

I haven't watched the anime yet but I'm planning to so I don't really have anything to say other than the aesthetic and fanart are cool and Suletta is bby

Kuromiko/Mikokuro (Mikoto x Kuroko): SHIP!!

What made you ship it? The dynamic, the plot and angst potential especially if Kuroko knew about the clones but the writer is a pussy , the way Kuroko is a tsundere to everyone but Mikoto is too wholesome, also how despite being a gremlin cat Mikoto trusts Kuroko with her life (I'll just ramble forever if I keep going so this has to do lol)

Favorite thing about the ship? They're funny and wholesome together, and best fighting duo that also has the potential to be op. Also the angst thanks to them both being stubborn idiots

Unpopular opinion on it? The way it is in canon is very unhealthy thanks to Touma being a thing but if it was written better it would be amazing, also Kuroko being a pervert can be too much and I don't appreciate how the show glosses over her not taking no for an answer when Mikoto is clearly uncomfortable in most scenes

Chisataki (Chisato x Takina): ship

Haven't watched it yet but I've seen too many scenes and spoilers I know they fit well together, also alot of angst

Aerti (Aerith x Tifa): don't ship

I absolutely know nothing about final fantasy but from the fanart that I've seen I'm not really a fan of the aesthetic, they seem too bland
