never been the artist of the group. never been the crazy creative child whose parents had to look after every single second of their day. never been the wild free spirited kid among the friends and relatives, nor the one who always had the best of ideas. never been the stereotypical artist, though I’ve always did art. artists are unusual to be found among the rationals, smart-ass eldest kids - and yet, I’m one of them I guess. always been the conscientious daughter, the mom friend of the group, sometimes apprehensive sometimes thoughtless. always been there to help, clarify doubts and listen to whatever the hell you need to tell me. I’ll for sure be there you’d hear me say 24/7. and not because I like hearing myself saying it, but because it’s stronger than me. I’ll be there, present, actively taking part in your life’s businesses just because you asked me for a little bit of company. my presence’ll be felt, as will it be my absence. never really been involved in social occasions, meetings or parties - never been the joyful open girl ready for a party here and there. always been quite reserved actually. closed up in myself in some ludicrous overthinking manners. I used to curled myself up into my thoughts and writing them down afterwards - that was the moment my artistic self usually showed up. it was silently, softly written down on paper or on some randomly opened word file on the oldest laptop ever. I felt free to be whoever I never was, to say all the bad words my mum never liked, to meet every wrong person I left behind me. I was the wild kid for some moments, the unstoppable and stubborn one, incapable of listening to both others and herself. no one would ever come to me, look down at my words and read them. no one would ever find out what I wish I experienced but never had the courage to, what I’m glad I never was into or got to see and stand and watch still. always been grateful while writing, not only rebellious. never been rational, literally technical or academically fancy. always used the most ruthless, truest, most tremendous and toughest words in my writing. always written angry, sad, deeply tormented. heaviness all around, in the hope of it to become lightness. I switched from personality to personality, I still do. that is my genial response to the world I never properly fitted in - writing, writing badly, ungrammatically, arrogantly, spontaneously. everything society doesn’t want us artists to be. you’re a dreamless generation my maths teacher once told the class. we’re an angry generation, I’d say. I don’t like talking generationally, though, so I won’t. just saying - the artist is the quietest among the angry, whose voice, though, always raises up the loudest (but only in the written form).

60daysshortstory Finale!
Tumblr media
Hello writerly friends!
Here we are, after 60 days. Sixty days of thinking about our stories, writing, and maybe even editing them.
I know I lost most of you along the way. But if you are one of the few who worked on their story and wrote and maybe even finished it, pat yourself on the back! Well done! Look what you can do!
I hope you learned things about yourself and your writing process. Trying to write regularly can be a challenge. If you made posts or took notes, look back at your goals and how you approached them and if you hit them. What have you learned about your process?
I learned that I can write in the afternoon and in the evening, if I move my body somewhere else. I also learned, once again, that I need less distractions but a little bit of accountability and control from someone else to write a lot. The daily wordcount post was also an interesting experience, a bit annoying sometimes, but great for making me write at leas a little bit every day. Maybe I should keep doing that.
With the finished short story on your harddrive, I should probably provide resources and advice for how to edit and revise, but I'm afraid this is something I know nothing about. Revision has never been necessary for me, here in fanfic world. I'm currently figuring this out myself.
Once you have revised and edited your story, you may think about sending it to magazines for publishing. This is also not my expertise, but I can safely point you to the Submission Grinder (https://thegrinder.diabolicalplots.com/Search/ByFilter), which is a database where you can search short story markets. Who knows, you might even earn some money from the publication.
Whatever you want to do, no matter how scary, do it. Do it scared. Get this story out into the world.

NaNoWriMo day 24
Well, I'm not sure how many days I missed while I was down a computer, but I'm trying to get back in the habit. 661 words today.

Recommitted to writing regularly this week. I wanted to write 500 words per day. Here's how that's worked out:
Tumblr media
While I didn't hit 500 words every day, I did average out to about 542 words per day. So that's pretty good.
I would rather, though, that I didn't have any days with 0 words. Even if all I write is a single sentence, I'd like to get in the habit of writing something daily on this story.

Weird Questions for Writers: 22 & 25
How organized are you with your writing? Describe to me your organization method, if it exists. What tools do you use? Notebooks? Binders? Apps? The Cloud?
Organized? Ahaha...haha...ha... Okay but seriously, I'm scattered as all hell. I have notebooks, various apps, including Scrivener, Dabble, Notion as well as stuff in my email, bookmarks saved with prompts to do, notes saved in my browser...I think you get the idea.
Lets see if I can break this down though:
Ideas and pre-drafting: Bookmarks, post-its, Vivaldi notes, email drafts, likes, Notepad
Drafting and revising: Scrivener, Dabble, Vivaldi notes, Notepad, Open Office, GDocs, text to speech software (rn, I'm using Speak Aloud which is a chrome extension but I want to look into others like Naturally Speaking)
General focus and tracking stuff: Focusmate (on and off), pomodoro sprints using various Discord bots, Google Sheets for keeping track of word counts, sprint times, and submission possibilities/tracking submitted pieces, the Submission Grinder (finding subs to put in the spreadsheet), Pacemaker (another way to keep track of wordcount)
What is a weird, hyper-specific detail you know about one of your characters that is completely irrelevant to the story?
Mr. Death crew:
Dora: Uses chocolate chips as rewards for when she's feeling like she can't focus. For every ten minutes of writing/studying/stuff like taht, she lets herself have as many chocolate chips.
Evan: Writes fanfic. It was how they realized they were queer and nonbinary, found friends, and realized there was stuff to be had outside of their abusive family.
Rainbow crew:
Dahl: While she's taken on several different faces and shapes over the many years she's been alive, she has found she gravitates toward femme presenting stuff just because she likes the variety of textures.
Kealan: While he loves tending to Lore and the building itself, he also sometimes just needs someone, anyone, but especially Lore, to tell him to self care. Particularly by taking a long shower while playing music and singing along.

Instead of planning writing as if there is a quota of product to fill, what worked for me was to commit time. It’s probably the third time I’ve made quota-based goals for writing and see them fall through. In contrast to poetry, which I mostly write on the go and during idle times, and there’s more predictable planning on how much time it takes me to edit, format and publish, essays take more sit-down time and have more "accidentally went down a rabbit hole researching but I swear it can still be relevant for context". Thus, what works is to commit a set time (i.e., 25 minutes, a pomodoro) to writing because it’s a predictable amount in my schedule that doesn’t eat away at other commitments, all the while not relying on completion.

Creating A Daily Writing Habit
Creating A Daily Writing Habit - Why is it important to write every day? #amwriting #writerslife #makewritingahabit #WriteEveryDay #WritingCommunity
Writing every day can be challenging, especially for those of us who have a busy schedule due to work or family commitments. It can be tough to set aside some time when you can be alone with a notepad and pencil or a laptop and without any distractions, but it is vital that you try if you want to be a better writer. Think of writing as a muscle that needs to be developed. The more you exercise…

My writing tracker from last year!!
I'm very proud of myself for sticking with my writing tracker as a habit forming tool. This is the first time I've consistently tracked my progress, and I think it was really helpful in helping me learn what works for me.
The Year in Review:
Most consistently reached word count: 600 - 700 words
Least consistently reached word count: 1200 - 1300 words
Highest word count: 1900 - 2000 words
Lowest word count: 1-100 words
Best month for writing: October
Worst month for writing: August
I can't wait to keep this up and see how much my habit improves this year!

Recent Writing Analytics Updates
I had a pretty sluggish January (hence no longer posts on the blog). This happens almost every winter — not sure whether it's the weather or the lack of daylight, but I'm way less productive.
I spent most of my time working on Writing Analytics. I redesigned and updated a bunch of things. Here's exactly what changed.
Time Goals for Projects
I'm super excited about this feature. I started using it immediately after building it. Most writing apps have word goals, but few let you set time goals as well.
Tumblr media
Time goals can be a lifesaver when you're buildling your writing habit. In the begining, you may not be able to hit a specific word count every day. You don't want to be beating yourself up for missing a goal even though you showed up and did good work.
Tracking time instead of words is a great way to address this. Focus on putting the hours in, and the words will follow.
Writing Analytics lets you set an overall goal for a project (like spending 60 hours working on your novel over the next two months) or a fixed daily goal (e.g., 30 minutes per day). The scheduling algorithm calculates how long you should write every day and puts that on your Overview.
Tumblr media
I like to use time goals for my Journal. I don't care how many words I write, but I want to spend consistent amount of time reflecting on my day. Right now, that's ten minutes every day.
Redesigned Project Dashboard
I updated the project dashboard to pack more information into less space. The old dials became progress bars. The schedule now tells you not only when you're scheduled to work on the project, but also how many words (or how much time) are due.
Tumblr media
The progress chart at the top now shows both your words and time progress.
Improved Goal Scheduling Algorithm
The algorithm that schedules your goals now reacts immediately when you miss a day instead of maintaining the same goal until the end of the week.
Tumblr media
Here's how your schedule will look when you miss a few consecutive days.
When I originally built the app, having the scheduler adjust instantly would be a little too stressful. You miss a day, and the next day's word count goes up. That was a mistake. Receiving feedback right away is much better.
Start Date for Projects
You can now set the start date for each of your projects. You can set up a project even if you don't want to start working on it immediately. Set a start date, and Writing Analytics will start scheduling goals for you when it's time to start writing.
Tumblr media
Project and Session Shortcuts
The goal card at the top of your Overview now has buttons that let you create a new session and start writing immediately.
Tumblr media
The cool thing about these is that they will pre-fill the goal in the new session form, saving you a few clicks.
Sessions also have a similar shortcut. You can start a new session without opening the old one.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts
So that was my January, pretty much. I have a few more things in the pipeline already. These should be out by the end of February.
Your support allows me to keep working on the app and making it better in an ethical way as a solo developer. Thank you 🙏.
And if you haven't tried Writing Analytics yet, now is a great time to do it!

I knew I was getting better at writing when I stopped using the adjective indescribable and finally started to find a way to describe what was beyond words.

I set a goal to write daily for at least 6 months and so far I’m averaging about 11 articles over 15 days, which is pretty good, considering that I (successfully) defended my oral comprehensive exams amidst that.
