Duke Thomas/The Signal Fic Recs

This is for @capttain-emo who saw me reblog this wonderful rec list by @stories-from-the-batcave , and asked if I knew any more. (I highly recommend those, btw, I love all the fics on that list! Yes, that includes the one I wrote in there) Duke Thomas is my favorite Batfam member, so I have a bunch! Unfortunately, there isn’t as much Duke content out there as I’d hope - people just don’t seem to like him as much for some reason? It’s sad. So, there are gonna be a couple here written by me. Rest assured, I have way more Duke content on the way - including a WIP coming out this week! (Ao3 linked out at the top of my blog)

1. Siblings: The Truth of the Matter by Me!

So when he was woken up by icy water being splashed in his face, tied to a chair in nothing but his boxers, he wasn't surprised. Now, that's not to say he wasn't worried. Duke was definitely worried. Especially since it was these two.

The way tumblr depicts the Batfamily and how wrong it is.

Last edit:15.03.2021 This had so many grammatical and punctual errors that it hurt my eyes. Why did it go off? :D

In this post I will do a big comparison of how the Batfamily (mostly the male part) is depicted in the tumblr community. I am not trying to insult anyone. Many of these are also DC’s fault and their inconsistency. (+ a P.S)

Batman

How tumblr sees him:

THE BEST DAD, adopting machine, always has time for his kids!!! always understand his kids! IS never mad at his kids and never hits them or something like that!! Over all the best dad!!

How he is in the comics (mostly depending on the writer):

Neglecting his children, snapping at them, doesn’t do well with parenting, because.. he had no parents after the age of 10. Tries to do well with them, but still does major mistakes. He doesn’t always understand “his” kids and does big mistakes - like hitting Jason for e.g. Generally doesn’t understand a lot of things.

Nightwing (KINDA LONG ONE):

How tumblr sees him:

Ray of sunshine! Happy-go-lucky, hyperactive mom!! He loves being sexy! Likes to be complimented on his ass!! !!Very social!!! Womanizer!!!! Always really positive!! thiccer than a sniccer

How he is in the comics:

In the comics even if yes - he is not as dark as Batman on the outside and talk a bit more than him, he is not a “mom” type of character that the tumblr community portrays him as. Actually he has pretty negative thoughts and doubts himsels and his decisions. HE DOESN’T LIKE TO BE SEXUALIZED OR TO BE COMPLIMENTED ABOUT HIS ASS. EVEN FROM COMICS IN THE 80-90S HE SAID HE DOESN’T LIKE ATTENTION.

DICK IS NOT THICKER/BIGGER THAN JASON AND NEVER WAS. Idk why in recent years people (also comics artists) portray Dick as someone who is very VERY muscular, bulky and even bigger than Jason (many times!). Yes he is fit, but he is not thicc kind of fit. Even if Richard had many relationships he actually is unsure when he is in one, he doesn’t always know what to do and he definitely is not the type of a “womanizer”. DICK IS NOT A RAY OF SUNSHINE. Actually he has some type of social anxiety (when overbeared with his role of a leader and his job he watched channels/shows in which there are no humans, i feel like it’s obvious why.) RICHARD TAKES HIS VIGILANTE JOB SERIOUSLY, TO THE POINT HE IS WORKCHOLIC AND CAN SEVERLEY INSULT PEOPLE. When Barbara told him he needs to rest and not concentrate so much on his vigilante life he literally told her that she needs to shut up and that he regrets installing elevator in the building (SHE WAS IN WHEELCHAIR.) Almost all of the fandom in tumblr forgets that DICK HAS FLAWS and is extremely flawed and negative many times, because of his job as vigilante.

Red Hood (Jason Todd):

How tumblr sees him:

ThE BAD BOY OF THE FAMILY, never got through his emo phrase, MCR fan, very not violent, aha.

How he is in the comics(written very inconsistently, many times one dimensional, please let me write him):

(yes he is NOT a heartless murderer, this is why he is an anti-hero, but he is still pretty violent)

At first a boy with severe temper problems, extremely violent, doesn’t think about conequences, always puts himself in danger,l because of his stupidity and naiveness (hence way he experienced such way of dying). (also feels constantly compared to Dick, which didn’t help him. LIKE CONSTATLY COMPARED TO DICK.)

After being revived he started having SEVERE MENTAL PROBLEMS, not only his mind didn’t heal properly, but it left him with really, really bad problems. He is SUICIDAL, HE HAS DEPRESSION. He actually has severe mental health problems that he tries to fight off, but no one here is saying a thing about how suicidal Jason actually is. The person that helped him the most is Roy Harper, that actually had his own problems (drug addiction having a baby by a super villain, clones, that baby dying, losing an arm and the list goes on. (depending on the comics you read).

Generally Jason is fucked up. I like his version in the RH and the outlaws, but he will always have mental problems and I think the fandom should talk about his broken side way more than his bad boy one.

Red Robin (Tim Drake:

How tumblr sees him:

LOVES COFFE, nerd aha, sassy af., very talkative, annoyed by everything LOL (I generally see this three as his main personality traits)

How he is in the comics:

Indeed a nerdy type of character, but he constantly tries to prove himself. (Imagine being an adoptive child to someome who recently lost their child in horrendous way and another one that left you because it wanted freedom, you would definitely want to prove your worth to Batman). Unlike Jason or Dick he is not very talkative, Tim is introverted and not confident, extremely socially awkward. Constantly doubting whether or not he is good enough (rarely seeing this to be talked about in the fandom). He is (un)arguably the best detective out of the all Robins. HE DOESN’T EVEN LIKE COFFEE, BUT PREFERS TEA. In old issues he is always seen with a CUP OF TEA in hand, rather than coffee. I feel like the fandom thought that when workacholic he is instantly in love with coffee, but this isn’t more far from the truth.

Robin ( DAMIAN WAYNE):

How tumblr sees him:

VERY ANGRYYY, ball of angryness, wants to cut off everything with his katana, wants to kill everyone,aha. ANNOYING AF.

How he is in the comics:

A character that actually has redeeming qualities, feeling other emotions aside from angry-ness, doesn’t literally want to cut everything with katana. Indeed having issues and being portrayed differently by comics artists, leaving him one dimensional sometimes or doing too irrational things. His ignorance is bred by Thalia, raising him with the thought of being “the heir of Batman/Bruce Wayne”. He actually needs help, a parent figure that can understand where his issues are and make him realise that. He is extremely flawed, but is a child, that needs a real parenting.

Alfred Pennyworth:

y’all forget that he is the one and only true parent figure of the family, he is not just there to be wise - but to remind all of them that they are humans and need to R E S T. That the things they do are actually not right. He is the true parent figure of all family members - especially Bruce.

Duke Thomas:

constantly forgetting he exists and it’s sad

Barbara Gordon:

many of y’all see her only for her role as a love interest of Dick, it’s sad.

Stephanie and Cassandra:

sometimes y’all include them

sometimes y'all don’t

very inconsistent of the way they are portrayed.

deserve more fanarts

Cassandra is not some badass that doesn’t talk - she can’t talk and desperately tries to learn.

Stephanie is way more than a nerd.

P.S - I have nothing against fanons and headcanons, but such topic should occassionally be brought up so new fans don’t get wrong idea of how the characters are in the comics! Sometimes we should remind ourselves that in the typical DC universe matter the characters we love are darker than we portray them, but I support creativity in every way! Do your thing! :)

Yugioh S3 Ep 29-30: LAVA GOLEM

Ah, Kaiba island.

I’m not quite sure how big Kaiba island is. In this picture it looks like we got ourselves a 6 story building on the side, but if we compare the 6 story building to the tower it’s like...that’s a 100 story building, roughly? Our art team has given up trying to make this building look like anything other than what it looks like, and they’re just going to make a metallic cross-section of a dick every time it shows up.

Also, I kinda wish we saw a little bit more of the landing sequence to get here because....

....did we do an Akira motorcycle slide into this island or is that just me?

Meanwhile, as Joey is duking it out on the world’s largest, coldest dildo, Serenity is stationed at the post she made for herself.

LOL Why did they do this? Why would they design this?

Inside the swamp cloud, Marik is shocked that Joey has been largely unphased by this horrific experience.

Clearly Marik has not caught on that Joey’s been conditioned to this stuff living with Yugi for the past many years, and a little bit of pink spirit-sucking wires aren’t really much of a match for that time Joey saw Yugi light a guy on fire with a match once. Well, a lighter. Either way, this isn’t so bad.

And then, I don’t really talk about card games here, but Marik introduces a new card I have not seen before.

Behold, Lava Golem.

Look at him! Like I know everyone’s kinda freaking out about the new pokemon but like...Lava Golem? Remember that sweet face?

He’s just soooooo good.

Man this is the first Yugioh card ever that I’ve actually liked.

And, upon seeing this terrifying situation, Tea turns to Yugi and says:

Also during these few episodes, Marik is starting to undergo a transformation, mostly via his viens. It’s a look. Kind of worried about his blood pressure.

And I was thinking that they just invented a a chin vein, but, as it turns out, they actually did their research.

There is a vein there! I mean this isn’t really that big a deal to most of you, probably, but anime often gets a bad rap for ignoring anatomy (which ... it’s a cartoon so yeah that’s...that’s what you do in cartoons, you ignore most anatomy) but hey--they got this vein correct. I don’t know why they even bothered, but that was very nice of them to make something so gross so correct.

And because some of you might want this just for yourself, cap free:

Is it just me? Is it just me that’s all ham about this Domo Kun face? This Mario mini-boss?

I usually don’t like the Yugioh monster designs but this one is just...he’s such a good boy.

Anyway, the art team was told at some point to change piss cloud and they decided to do this instead

Why does the width keep changing on the tower? Like I know it was tossed between different artists but like...it just...it keeps changing and it bothers me.

Anyway, back to what matters.

Can this be our new Joey Wheeler? Just leave everything about Joey Wheeler the same but replace his sprite with Lava Golem and with no explanation. I’d be down.

I do think that this arc brought back their A-team for the animation, there was just a lot more going on visually than we’ve had in a good while. Like this Marik face, for instance--this very famous face that I’ve seen drawn on like...a whole lot of characters. This is a much-referenced pose.

I mean, hey, not using reference while drawing is the same as dueling as Yugi Muto and just never using the Pharaoh. Like sure you could, but never, ever, ever do that.

And I just want you to know, I held that really corny anime art joke in for like a straight week on twitter as the entire world was going off about whether or not you’re supposed to use reference materials when you draw as if this is some sort of controversial topic (it’s not. No one cares about your process.) and y’all, it was HARD. But I did it. I resisted the discourse and still found a way to sneak it into here, into the side blog where I can go off about the inane art twitter discourse without getting blocked.

Which, again, was about “Can I use reference?” I...art twitter. Art twitter, I swear. why would you NOT? You have the Pharaoh, art twitter. You have the Pharaoh.

Anyway, I hope at least one of you got that joke. I hope one of you at least was like “lol--Art Reference is the Heart of the Cards.” and the next time someone tells you that using reference is cheating (which will never happen, a infinitesimal number of people in one forum on DeviantArt in 2003 said this once in the entire history of art, and I don’t know why twitter is fighting with these child-run forums that don’t even exist anymore) you can say “Don’t you dare talk about my platonic soulmate that way.” and just end the argument there.

The hell are these people who say artists don’t use reference? Do you write history papers without reading books?

And that’s my rant that was a.) too long for twitter and also b.) maybe too much anime. With art twitter it’s like..there’s no middle ground between too much anime and not enough anime. No middle ground and I have no idea where the people who follow me even stand. I think they just want to see Zelda. I think that’s about it. I really can’t tell with them. I’m like...always confused as to what those people want.

I need to delete my twitter. Anyways, back to Joey, who felt like breaking the fourth wall.

And so Marik decides to sober up and play the God card.

Yo guys, remember God Cards? I’ll be honest, I kinda completely forgot about them.

And then at some point this shot happened and I was living for it.

such a good idea to offset people in a different filter and kinda stack em. Bro was saying he remembered this sort of thing in Cowboy Bebop but I don’t remember what the hell he’s talking about. Bro and his spicy headcanons are mixing up Yugioh and Cowboy Bebop now. Never thought I’d see that.

And then Kaiba’s muscles kinda twitched and it looked like smiling.

Man, were there a lot of phoenix references in the 00′s or is that just me who read way too much Harry Potter?

And like, because I do draw Yugi sometimes, occasionally people will reblog and tag with Pharaoh’s real name in there (I can’t really avoid that spoiler), so I think it’s pretty likely his name comes from Atum of Egyptian legend. Who...wasn’t really a Pharaoh. Atum was kinda weird, he gave birth to...himself. He’s an interesting read. But, we’ll get there when we get there.

But, I didn’t really know about Bennu pyramids until I actually went and looked up Egyptian Phoenixes. I had always thought that the Phoenix was Greek in origin but, according to Wikipedia some people say it happened in Egypt as well. And if it’s good enough for Wikipedia, it’s good enough for Yugioh.

The return of the mystery purple moisturizer jug and it brought it’s entire extended family of fiji waters.

And so, Ishizu decides to do the right thing and take care of Mai. Not sure what Ishizu knows about being a nurse since she lived underground, but since she can help cure poisonous snake bites, maybe comas are a little bit easier?

And so Serenity starts the 30 minute jog up the phallic tower to get to Joey’s death sequence. She’s made it to about...20 ft outside of the plane by the end of this episode. Serenity runs kinda slow.

Bro mentioned that he thinks it looks like Tea’s trying to very stealthily steal Yugi’s wallet. And that’s just my spicy headcanon now, too.

Well now that’s over, lemme see if...

Welcome To Gotham

A/N: Wellllll. This is that high school AU I was talking about! For all the Bats to be in Gotham Academy High, I had to tinker with the ages a bit! So to understand the works, please reference this. That’s about it! I hope y’all like it! Special thanks to @mizmahlia for helping me out with the beginning!

Prologue | Chapter I |

You chewed the inside of your lip, chin in-hand and foot tapping rhythmically on the ground. You’re sitting on your bed a bit hunched over as you stare at the closet. And you’re not even sure why you’re doing it! The school your parents enrolled you in is a private one, and you’ve already set the uniform down on the bed beside you.

Frustrated with yourself, you sigh and flop down on your back, head hitting the mattress gently.

Did your parents have to take a job in Gotham during your Junior year of high school? Don’t they have any idea how hard it’s going to be to fit in now? Your social life is practically going to be nonexistent! You’ll be an outsider among them!

With another drawn-out sigh, you cover your eyes with your hands.

Today’s the first day of the school year and your first day attending the new, unfamiliar school with new, unfamiliar people.

Oh you’re so looking forward to the rest of the day.

Determinedly, you get up and dress in the navy skirt, white polo, red tie, and black emblemed blazer. Frowning, you decide on some simple maroon sneakers for footwear before you sling a strap of your backpack over a shoulder and make your way to the kitchen to grab a quick breakfast.

Your mom is still asleep and your dad has long since gone to work. You glance at the clock and grab your house keys on your way out, making sure your phone is in your pocket.

06:40am

You’ve still got about twenty minutes to make it to Gotham Academy if you want to be on-time. That’s a plus.

However, that would leave you with another ten minutes of socializing, if one can call avoiding people like they have the plague socializing.

Mentally debating whether or not to head out now or wait, you gave up and hurried out the door.

A brief bus ride and five-minute walk later, you’ve made it. You’re at the new school.

Okay so that’s step one in plan Survive The First Day compete! Now for step two; find an empty place to hunker down in until first period. What is your first period again?

Biting a corner of your lip, you pull out your phone and find the screenshot of your schedule that you’d taken a few days ago. First period for you was… AP Literature. Sweet!

Nodding once to yourself, you straighten your posture and start walking around the campus littered with teenagers. As you look around, you start to feel very, very lonely. Everyone is either with one or a group of people, but nobody is actually quite as alone as you are.

You sigh, head lowering a bit.

Suddenly you hear someone walk up behind you, and you turn to see who it is. It’s a girl with wavy dark hair up in a tight pony tail and warm brown eyes behind boxy-framed thin glasses who stands behind you. She’s actually a bit cute.

There’s a kind smile on her face as she greets you with a small wave. “Hey there.”

How are you supposed to answer that? She greeted you like you’re long-time friends, not people who are literally just meeting. “Uhm. Hi.” You want to hit yourself for your lacking social skills.

She holds out a hand, introducing herself. “The name’s Mia Delacrúz!”

You smile shyly as you shake her hand. “Hi. I’m [F/n] [L/n].”

As she takes her hand back, her smile remains. “Sorry if this seems rude, but you don’t seem like you’re a native Gothamite. Where’re you from?”

“Oh, I moved from [S/N].” Is it really that obvious?

Mia laughed. “Yeah, it really is.”

Damn you said that out loud.

You chuckle, shrugging. “Is that a bad thing?”

“So not!” She waves a hand, turning her head to look to the main section of the courtyard as people around you start whispering and gesturing. “Oh,” she hummed, “they’re here.”

Confused, you move to try and see who she’s talking about. All you can really manage to catch sight of is a group of teens. Five boys and a girl who don’t seem all that special…

“Who’re they?”

Mia glances back over to you, turning back. “Oh, them?”

Your eyes are still following the group as you nod. Mia chuckles, looking back to them. “Those’re the Waynes. Well, Duke isn’t a Wayne yet, technically, but he lives with them, so.” She clears her throat as she starts to give you names to connect to faces.

“The really cute one is Richard Grayson, but he prefers that people call him Dick. He’s a sweet guy and a Senior. He’s the oldest, too. Th–”

“Why Dick?” You make a bit of a face as you interrupt, confused.

Mia huffs. “I don’t know. Ask him yourself. In the meantime, I think you asked me who they were?”

You blush a bit, glancing at her apologetically. “Sorry.”

She smirks. “It’s fine. Anyways, the tall one with the white streak in his hair is Jason Todd. He’s a Senior. Now, that kid comes off as a total ass, but he’s real nice once he warms up to you. The girl’s name is Cassandra Cain. Now her.” Mia whistles. “She’s a complete and utter badass. I once saw her take out four of last year’s seniors alone. She’s a Junior.”

You raise a brow, impressed. She looks so… fragile, it’s a bit hard to imagine.

Your new friend continues talking.

“Okay, the small one who looks like he’s going to stab someone’s Damian Wayne, and the short, paler one is Tim Drake. Tim is a Junior. Real cute. Damian’s a Sophomore and actually not too bad once you get to know the kid.” Here Mia’s voice turns a bit fond, and you side-glance her. She catches your look and chuckles. “My little sister is a friend of his,” she explains.

“So, that leaves the kid you said wasn’t technically a Wayne, right? Duke?” you inquire as you look back to see the group joined by a two other boys. One a ginger and the other a redhead.

Mia smiles. “Yup! Duke’s actually one of the cooler ones. He’s super chill, and he’s a Junior this year..”

“And who’re they?” you gesture to the new faces.

She squints a bit, adjusting her glasses a bit. “Oh! That’s Roy Harper and Wally West. They transferred last year. Roy’s the one with the trucker hat and long-ish hair, and Wally’s the other one.” Mia shrugs. “Roy is practically Jason’s brother, and Wally is Dick’s best friend. They’re both Seniors.” The girl smiles a bit. “I’m very happy to say that Roy is a good friend of mine too.”

You smile at Mia, turning to face her. “Cool. What’s the big deal about the Waynes, again?”

At her incredulous look, you blush a bit and fidget with the hem of your shirt. “You really have no idea who they are,” she deadpans.

“No?”

“Do you live under a rock or something?”

“No! I’ve just never been to Gotham before!”

“Everyone knows who Bruce Wayne is!”

“I clearly don’t!”

She laughs. “Bruce Wayne? As in, billionaire playboy bachelor who makes a habit out of adopting kids?”

You pause as your brain starts to process the information and you gasp when it clicks. Bruce Wayne! The Wayne scholarship that got you into this school!

The man who basically gave you a future and your parents great jobs has kids! Who go here!

“Holy shit!” You clap a hand over your mouth and Mia starts laughing again.

“You finally put two and two together or something?” she teases with a cheeky grin.

Rolling your eyes, you gently shove her and she laughs. “What year are you?”

“Junior,” she answers and you couldn’t be happier. Maybe you have her for some classes! “And you?”

You smile as you answer. “Junior!”

Mia grins. “Awesome.”

The bell marking the start of the school day rings, and you compare schedules with Mia. You have first, fourth, fifth, and sixth periods together, which is awesome and more than you could have hoped for.

As the two of you walk into the AP Lit class, you catch sight of Jason Todd and Rich–Dick Grayson already sitting down. Dick is talking to Jason about something that you don’t catch, but the latter doesn’t seem particularly interested as he blankly gazes at the former.

You pause in the doorway as Mia keeps walking, eyes locked on Jason.

Holy hell he’s hot.

Unconsciously, you start to take in all the details you couldn’t see in the courtyard as people continue to walk past you into the room. The strong jawline, the green eyes, the scar on his lip, his broad shoulders, the muscles on his arms…

Jason looks over at you and catches you staring. He smirks and you feel the blush creeping onto your face as you duck your head a bit and take a seat beside Mia who’s cracking up.

…unfortunately, she’d taken a seat in front of Dick, which left you to sit in the desk in front of Jason’s. You can feel his eyes on you as Mia lightly shoves your arm, leaning over to whisper, “Smooth, [Y/n].”

The bell rings and you gently shove your friend back and she laughs quietly.

Your teacher introduces himself as Mister Walter Beaudry in a monotone voice and you internally groan. He’s one of those teachers, then.

He instructs the class to introduce themselves by saying their first and last names, and the name of the person or people who had gone before them.

“Snap,” you hear Mia whisper beside you. When she sees your raised brow she explains, “I’m terrible with names, [Y/n].”

“Well,” you start, “you got my name right. And theirs–” who the they was went unsaid “–so I’m sure you can do this.”

She gives you a small, grateful smile as the first person stands up and introduces himself as Andrew Daugnt.

When it’s Mia’s turn she stands, names all eight people who’d gone before her, then sits down with a relieved exhale.

You grin, whispering, “You got it, girl!”

Mia huffs a breathless laugh. “I did, didn’t I?”

You’re about to say something more when you realize that it’s your turn.

Quickly, you stand and name the people who’d gone before you, having to ask the girl in front of you her name since you hadn’t caught it. “And I’m [F/n] [L/n].” You give a very shy smile and wave before sitting back down. Having all those people looking at you had been a bit nerve-wracking, you have to admit.

You still when you realize that it’s Jason’s turn to introduce himself.

“That’s [Y/n], and I’m Jason Todd.”

For some reason you blush when he says your name as you try and sink in your seat a little. You hear a chuckle behind you and your cheeks heat up further.

Oh, God, this class is going to be unbearable.

Once everyone’s introduced themselves, the bell rings for second period and you bid Mia a temporary good-bye as you shuffle to P.E.

…P.E. which, of course, you end up having with Jason, Tim, and Roy.

Damn.

Sorry I ended it there, but I wasn’t sure how else to do it 😂
