Pepa: I like my hair pulled and I like to be choked. But I also like to cuddle and have my nose and forehead kissed.
Felix: Treat you like a princess, fuck you like a whore. Got it.

The sea was wet as wet could be, the sands were dry as dry. You could not see a cloud because no cloud was in the sky.
The Walrus and the Carpenter were walking close at hand; they wept like anything to see such quantities of sand: 'If this were only cleared away,' they said, 'it would be grand!'
------
You guys, I'm really proud of this one. I worked real hard on the shadows 💚 I learned so much.
Excerpt is from The Walrus and the Carpenter by Lewis Carroll. I like to think that kid Pepa would like the part about the clouds, and kid Bruno would like the part about the sand. Pepa does NOT like the part about the oysters. Julieta is overworked and indifferent.

Day 11: Liminal
Seriously had to look this up...not a word I am familiar with - so off we go with hopefully a relevant post. Why did Bruno stay for as long as he did?
Tumblr media
Day Eleven: Liminal
It was a beautiful summers' day, and the triplets were resting on a hill near town. They were lying on the ground with their heads touching, discussing their Gifts and things they’d noticed happening to them when they used them. Yesterday was Pepa’s turn to talk about hers. She told them how the rain wasn’t always because she was sad. Sometimes it was because she was just so happy, she wanted to cry. How lightening made her palms and the soles of her feet itch. The day before was Julieta’s. Healing people was gratifying, and it made her happy to help the people around her, but she could feel the bits of herself that she was giving away. She likened it to dying by a thousand pin pricks. Today was Bruno’s day, and he knew it that what he was saying wasn’t making a whole lot of sense because even he was unsure as to what he was thinking.
“So, spill it, hermanito. We have to get back to town soon,” Pepa said, as a cloud formed over their heads.
“Pepi, honestly, since when are you in a hurry to get back to town?” Julieta asked.
There was a short roll of thunder, but the cloud dissipated. Bruno held his hands up and this blocked some of the sunlight that was shining on them and an answer came to him, and he said, “When I’m using my Gift, it’s like I’m looking through gaps in a wall... and the sand... it’s pushing through an almost infinitesimally tiny space between reality and the netherworld, showing me pieces of itself. There’s always that anticipation I feel, like when you're reading a good book for the first time. It pulls me in, wanting me to...”
“To what, Bruno?”
“Stay... sometimes that feeling is so, strong that I get lost looking for the light to show me the way back.”
Julieta and Pepa both raised their hands, and the sisters each took one of Bruno’s hands in theirs. “We’ll always help you find your way back, Bruno,” Julieta said, giving his hand a squeeze. Pepa’s cloud reformed, and she waved it away with her free hand. Bruno smiled. If he can just hold on to this moment, he thought, he'd be able to bear everything he knew was coming.

A little snippet of an ENCANTO AU I’be been working on, because I’m too excited not to share. I’d love to get some opinions as motivation for where to take this!
Can you guess who this is about 👀
……..
His chest had clenched tightly with burning lungs with each staggering step, but somehow, he kept shuffling forward on burning legs.
It had been slow-going for the past hour or so, but still, he kept on marching forward. At this point, he was sure if he tried to stop he’d end up collapsing.
His glasses had long before been disregarded into his tattered bag - they were far too scratched to see out of anyways - which created a blur in his eyes between where one tree ended or the next began. The blur made it difficult to tell where he was, though Agustin never had a very good sense of direction to begin with, and he was only able to dazedly take in the break of light. Like a wandering child, uncertain but filled with a sudden surge of wonder, he continued to stumble toward that light.
Yet again, his own clumsiness pushed him forward, foot snagging on a vine that caused him to stumble toward an unnoticed gap in the trees, just barely managing to keep on his feet.
The young man coughed as his lungs filled with air in what seemed like the first time all day, making him lightheaded. He looked up, blinking away the daze to get some sort of focus on his surroundings, and suddenly froze between thoughts.
Just below the hill he’d found upon himself, were blurs of color, different shades of brown and red, taking on a similar shape each. He blinked in recognition. They were buildings.
A village.
He had just stumbled into a village.
It seemed the sight had drained the energy from his body, as his knees buckled and the teen was sent to the ground with a blunt impact to his hands and knees. He heaved slightly, eyes closing tightly as he breathed. He knew he had to be injured, but truly, he was no stranger to pain. It had always been a part of his life, and he couldn’t let it be the thing to debilitate him when he was so close to possible safety.
“Ay, Señor?” A voice had called, as footsteps began to near, quick yet steady. “¿estás bien, hombre?”

The First Move
[Tired of waiting for their clueless hombres to make the first move, Julieta and Pepa decide they are just going to have to take matters into their own hands.]
“Juli, you have been in here all night. You should come dance, enjoy the party!”
“No gracias, I…I, uh, want to get ahead. If tomorrow is anything like today then I need to be ready.”
From where she was sat on the edge of the table in la cocina, picking at the buñuelo in her hand and putting another piece in her mouth as she watched her hermana knead the dough for her arepas, Pepa frowned as she had a sneaking suspicion there was more to this than she was letting on. For as long as she had known her, so all their lives, she had never seen her turn down the opportunity to leave the kitchen for a couple of hours and have some fun. Not only that, but she adored parties and so there just had to be something going on with her.
Hopping down from the table once she was done eating, she began to make her way across the room to where Juli was standing at the counter and leaned against it, clearing her throat with a smirk when she looked at her out of the corner of her eye. “You know, I just remembered seeing Señor Rojas speaking with Félix and Bruno before I came looking for you,” She told her in a soft voice, doing her best to keep from chuckling at the deep blush she saw bloom in her cheeks. “I don’t suppose that has anything to do with you hiding in here, does it?”
“Ay Pepa, I’m not hiding!”
“Juli, who are you trying to convince? You or me?”
Julieta reached for the tea towel on the counter and used it to wipe the dough from her hands, sighing as she pushed the bowl away from her and turned around to lean against the counter like her hermana. “I act like an idiota in front of him,” She muttered. “I’m not like you, I have no idea how to talk to hombres and when he’s around me I forget how words work and then I start laughing at things that aren’t even graciosa because I get nervous. Not only that, but I can’t dance so I would make more of an idiota of myself if he asked me for one.”
“You…you think you’re the idiota?” Pepa raised an eyebrow. “The hombre fell over air earlier, remember?”
Julieta chuckled under her breath at the memory, reaching up to tuck a curl that came free from her bun back behind her ear. “He may not be the best at…well…life, but he’s still a caballero and so sweet and that’s what I love about him. You can’t deny there are too many hombres in this town who think the world revolves around them. Who think they can put their hands on us without our say so and complain when we aren’t grateful for the atención,” She watched Pepa nod in agreement as she rubbed at her arm. “I really don’t want to marry an hombre like that and I don’t think you want to either. I see the way you smile at Félix whenever he’s around.”
“Huh? No, no, no, I don’t like him like that.” Pepa argued though her face turned bright red.
“Now who’s trying to do the convincing?” Julieta teased. “Admit it, you have it as bad for him as I do Gus.”
Pepa smirked. “He is a bailarina fabulosa…”
“Do you think they know?”
“Oh, believe me, they know. They’re just too scared to do anything about it, cobardes.”
“Well then,” Julieta reached back to start untying her apron. “I guess that means we’ll have to.”
Pepa looked at her with wide eyes. “What do you mean?”
“This is the 20th siglo, I think we can ask an hombre to dance with us if we want to,” Julieta rolled her eyes. “I know I said the thought of dancing makes me nervous, but I don’t mind asking Gus as long as you ask Félix.”
“Okay, deal.” Pepa nodded.
Once her apron was removed and she had covered the large bowl of dough on the counter with the tea towel, Julieta reached for her hermana’s hand and the two of them began to make their way out of la cocina together. For a moment, they stood there in the doorway and scanned the courtyard with their eyes before they spotted both Félix and Agustín standing in the corner with their hermano. “Bruno is going to hate us for this, you do know that?” Pepa leant in towards her sister as she said those words, chuckling and giving her hand a squeeze.
“Ah, he hates us already so I don’t think it matters.” Julieta pointed out.
They shared a look before starting to weave their way through the many people dancing, chatting and drinking in the courtyard, and the three men looked up at them when they came to stand in front of them. Julieta was just about to open her mouth to speak when Pepa dropped her hand, grabbed the can of beer from Felix’s, set it down on the table and began to drag him away from the group. “Pepa, I said to ask not force!” She shouted.
Her hermana shrugged at her and she sighed and turned back to her brother and Agustín.
“Uh, everything okay, Juli?” Agustín raised an eyebrow at her.
“She’s going to ask you to dance with her because she’s irritante.” Bruno grumbled, sipping at his beer.
“You…you are?” Agustín asked, stunned, as he put his beer down beside Félix’s.
Julieta played nervously with her hands for a moment. “Sí. I…I mean, I…I was going to, but you don’t…”
Reaching for her hand, Agustín took it in his and chuckled when she fell silent. “I’d love to dance with you.”
“She can’t dance to save her life, by the way.” Bruno told him.
“Cállate!” She hissed.
“I don’t care, honestly,” Agustín admitted with a chuckle. “Come on.”
She let him lead her further into the courtyard then and he dropped her hand once they found a spot to dance in, bringing both his hands to her waist so he could pull her close while she laced her arms loosely around his neck. Swaying in time to the music, they looked at one another in silence for a little while before she let out a sigh and stepped further into him. “Bruno was right, you know, I really can’t dance.” She said, her voice quiet.
“Is that why you spent half the night hiding from me in la cocina?” He asked.
“Why does everyone think I was hiding in there?”
“Well, were you?”
“Uh, maybe…”
“Why were you hiding from me?” He pressed, brushing his thumb against her side through her dress.
“Because I didn’t want to make an idiota of myself and that’s all I do when I’m around you.” She admitted.
“You do?” He seemed genuinely surprised.
“You never noticed? Gus, I can barely string two words together half the time and I end up laughing because I get so nervous, how could you not notice?” Her brows knitted together. “I thought you thought I was strange.”
He shook his head. “No, I don’t think you’re strange. I think you’re asombroso and muy hermosa.”
Sinking her teeth into her bottom lip, she felt her cheeks burn. “¿Honestamente?”
“Honestamente,” He echoed with a nod. “And if you need a little more convincing…”
He took a hand from her waist and the two of them stopped dancing for a moment, her heart beating slightly faster when he brought that hand up and took her by the chin. Her gaze moved slowly back and forth between his and his lips for a second and she swallowed nervously when he pulled her closer with the hand still on her waist, but then he brushed his lips against hers. It was a quick kiss, so quick she barely had time to respond to it, but when he pulled away she rested a hand on the side of his neck and brought him back down to her. She felt more than heard his chuckle as she kissed him tenderly and it made her smile, her love for him deepening.
When they parted again moments later, their breathing rather heavy as he leaned his forehead against hers and held her to him, they shared a smile and she cuddled against him on instinct. “I have been wanting to do that since the moment I met you,” He somehow breathed while looking into her eyes. “It was well worth the wait.”
“For me too,” She whispered, stretching up to kiss him once again. “Uh…I’m not sure what we do now.”
“For now, we dance,” He told her while his hands went back to her waist. “Everything else will come in time.”
Nodding, she slipped her arms back around his neck and teased the baby hairs she found there as they started to sway in time with the music once more. It was then that she remembered about her hermana and Félix and turned her head to look for them, a smile spreading across her face as she saw them dancing a short way away from them. It had been intimidating, the prospect of making the first move, probably just as much for Pepa as it was for her despite her being the more outgoing one, but she was glad they had found the courage to do so.
Should they have waited for them to do it, they no doubt would have been waiting all their lives.
It was no longer something they had to worry about though and she was sure there were many blessings ahead.
So many blessings.

To say that being a single mother of triplets was tough would be an understatement, especially for Alma Madrigal. Not only that her children would run circles around her whenever they could, but their development was visibly different, despite being the same age. It has become more apparent now that the triplets have recently turned three years old. Julieta and Pepa were saying so many words and even Pepa started reading the signs they saw on their walks in the village. Bruno, on the other hand, was not saying anything. Every time sound came out of his mouth, it was still completely incomprehensible.
While Julieta and Pepa both understand what Bruno was trying to communicate, mainly because he smiles or nods most of the time they are together, Alma still thought about what would happen when they started school the coming fall. She did not want to hold Bruno back, she wanted him to go to school with his sisters. At the same time, she was concerned about the fact that none of the preschools in the Encanto was going to enroll him unless his language improved.
It was not until one day when Alma’s fears would begin to shrink. She picked the triplets up from daycare one Friday afternoon and the mother and children walked through the village together. One of her friends, Rosa, saw her and she stopped to talk to her.
“Hola, Alma! I know you told me about how concerned you were about Bruno’s language, but I found someone that I think would help!” Rosa said.
“You did?” Alma responded.
“Si; there’s a speech and occupational therapist that just transferred to the Encanto, Dr. Valeria Martinez.”
Rosa then handed Alma a small business card with Dr. Martinez’s name and address handwritten on it. She looked at the business card and smiled before putting it in her dress pocket.
“Gracias, Rosa! I hope to get to see her on Monday with Bruno and talk to her about what’s been going on.”
“De nada, Alma; and good luck!”
Alma hugged her friend with a smile and continued walking with the triplets. They continued walking in the village square until they got back to Casita and the triplets dropped their backpacks on the couch. The three went into the living room to play with their toys and Alma sat on the couch in the courtyard and took Dr. Martinez’s business card out of her dress pocket. She stared at the card and smiled.
“I hope my prayers will be answered with you.”
----------------------------------------
Once Monday rolled around, Alma took the triplets to Dr. Martinez’s office after picking them up from daycare. They walked into the office to see Dr. Martinez sitting at her desk and sat in front of her.
“Hola! You’re here for a consultation?” Dr. Martinez asked.
“Si; my friend gave me your business card and I wanted to talk to you about doing a session with my son, Bruno. I have triplets and I’ve been noticing he’s not meeting the same language milestones as his sisters and now that they all turned three, it’s beginning to concern me. I don’t want to hold him back when they start preschool next year, but I know none of the preschools in the Encanto are going to enroll him unless he can at least acquire some language skills,” Alma explained to the therapist.
Dr. Martinez took the notes in her pad. “How long has this been going on?”
“Since Julieta started talking. Pepa started talking super early and even started saying three and four-syllable words before their second birthday. I originally figured Bruno was just going to be a little bit delayed since Pepa and Julieta started talking at different times. But now that they’re three and he’s still not talking, it’s worrying me.”
Dr. Martinez continued writing what Alma was saying in her notes. “Would it be okay if I took Bruno into my office so I can get to know him a little bit more?”
Alma nodded and Dr. Martinez and Bruno made their way to her office as Alma waited in the front with Julieta and Pepa. They sat at a little table together and faced each other. Bruno looked at Dr. Martinez and studied her as she smiled at him.
“Hi, Bruno! I’m Dr. Martinez. Would you like a toy?”
Bruno stared at Dr. Martinez and reached out for her arm. He squealed in excitement and began feeling her arm until he started to hold her hands. He smiled and Dr. Martinez gently removed his hands and got up from the table. She came back with a shape sorting cube and gave it to Bruno. She took out the star toy and showed it to him.
“Star,” Dr. Martinez said as she showed the toy to him.
She then put the star inside the star hole. Bruno smiled and tried to repeat her, and sound was coming out, but he could not get the syllables. Instead, he grabbed the circle toy and put it in the circle hole.
“Circle,” Dr. Martinez emphasized.
Bruno made another noise that was incomprehensible. He tried as hard as he could to say “circle”, but all he could do was make the same incomprehensible noises he’s been making this entire time. Dr. Martinez continued writing notes in her pad as Bruno continued playing with the shape sorter and making noises.
For the rest of the session, Dr. Martinez brought out more toys and said more words associated with the toys as Bruno attempted to say them. He continued playing with the toys until the hour they had together was finished.
Bruno and Dr. Martinez came back to the front after their session to see Alma, Julieta, and Pepa waiting for them. Bruno ran to Julieta and Pepa and they hugged him as tightly as they could. Dr. Martinez took out her notes to review the session to Alma.
“During our session, it seems to be clear that he’s trying his hardest to repeat what is being said to him. The sound is coming out, but he’s having trouble with the syllables. My best suggestion would be to focus on very specific syllables before having him speak full words. I have a couple of exercises that could help him in this folder,” Dr. Martinez explained as she gave Alma the folder she mentioned.
Alma went through the folder and found several sheets with specific syllables for Bruno to work on at home. “Gracias, Dr. Martinez; this should help Bruno with the first step in speaking.”
Dr. Martinez smiled and shook Alma’s hand. “I hope this will help him. I’ll see you next week.”
Alma and the triplets left the office and walked back to Casita. Julieta and Pepa asked Bruno lots of questions about Dr. Martinez and if she was nice. While Bruno could not answer with words, the girl still knew that he liked her.
---------------------------------------
Several weeks have passed, and Bruno has made progress with pronouncing one syllable at a time. While he has not said a word just yet, Alma was feeling optimistic about his speech because of the progress he was making. It was not until one early spring day when the triplets were drawing together in Casita’s courtyard when Alma’s prayers would be answered.
“Look what I drew!” Pepa exclaimed as she held up her drawing of herself, Julieta, and Bruno together outside on a sunny day under a rainbow.
“I love that picture!” Julieta replied.
The girls expected Bruno to make another noise to show how much he liked the picture, but instead, he pointed to where Pepa drew herself. He did not remove his finger from the paper and opened his mouth to try and say what he wanted to say.
“Pepa!” Bruno said in a way that was still a little bit slurred, but still pretty easy to understand.
Julieta and Pepa looked at Bruno simultaneously in shock as their mouths dropped open. Before they could run to their mother, Bruno pointed at the picture again, but this time, to where Pepa drew Julieta.
“Juli!” Bruno said as he smiled.
Julieta’s and Pepa’s smiles grew wider as they screamed in excitement. Alma overheard her daughters’ screaming and ran into the courtyard from the kitchen, originally assuming somebody got hurt.
“¿Qué está sucediendo? Is everyone alright?” Alma asked as she saw her triplets still on the floor together.
“Did you hear Bruno?” Pepa asked, still smiling.
“He said our names!” Julieta added.
“I… I showed him my drawing and he pointed to me in the drawing and said my name! Then he pointed to Julieta and said her name!”
Alma looked at Bruno and he pointed at Pepa’s drawing of herself again! “Pepa!” he said again and smiled. Alma put her hand on her mouth and cried tears of joy. Bruno pointed at Julieta on Pepa’s drawing and said “Julieta!”
Alma continued crying and picked Bruno up and hugged him. She cried more in his ruana and Bruno hugged her back. Julieta and Pepa ran up to Alma and hugged her and reached for Bruno to give him a hug.
“Mama!” Bruno said as he went back to hug his mother.
Alma’s eyes widened and she looked at Bruno when she heard him say “mama.” She held him closer and tighter as she cried more. “Asi es! Mama! I’m Mama, Brunito! Mama!”
Alma put Bruno down and Julieta and Pepa gave him the tightest hug they possibly could. Bruno hugged his sisters back and they sat back on Casita’s couch together. Alma went back into the kitchen, still crying tears of joy, as the triplets continued drawing their pictures together while waiting for dinner to be ready.
“Bruno talks!” Pepa pointed out as she and Julieta hugged again.
“Bruno talks!” Julieta repeated.
“Bruno!” Bruno repeated when he heard his sisters say his name.
Julieta and Pepa looked at each other, and then at Bruno. They screamed again and looked at Bruno in excitement and hugged him once more. “You’re saying more words, Bruno!” Pepa yelled.
Bruno smiled and hugged his sisters back until Alma came back to the courtyard from the kitchen. She saw her triplets still celebrating Bruno’s milestone and sat on the couch until her children were finished screaming.
“Dinner’s ready, mijos.”
The triplets ran into the kitchen for dinner and to tell Alma about how Bruno just said his own name.
-------------------------------------------
The months following the triplets’ first official day of preschool saw much more progress in Bruno’s language. Ever since he said his sisters’ names for the first time, he was pointing to more objects and saying more words. Dr. Martinez has noticed this progress during every one of Bruno’s speech sessions since. At his first session after the triplets’ fourth birthday, Dr. Martinez noticed he was much closer to being on par with the rest of his peers in his language development.
Bruno was talking more to his classmates and Julieta and Pepa could even have more conversations with him. This also helped Bruno build his confidence over time. In their toddler class, his teachers did not think he was going to meet the same milestones as his sisters because of his language delay and he was not verbally telling his teachers anything. Now that he is speaking more, his teachers have noticed he understood what they were saying the entire time, he was just having trouble verbally expressing himself.
Bruno left his session with Dr. Martinez, feeling more confident than he ever was before. He not only was saying more words, but was also saying short phrases.
“How was your session?” Alma asked as she and the triplets started walking into the village and back to Casita.
“I liked it!” Bruno responded with a smile.
“Was it fun?” Julieta asked.
“It was!”
The Madrigals continued walking and talking about Bruno’s session. The fact that Alma could have a conversation with Bruno now made all of her fears disappear. She could finally understand him and she felt like she could have a stronger relationship with him; and Bruno loved having a better relationship with his mother and sisters.

Rainy days
In one piece of Bruno’s early concept art, back when he was gonna be Mirabel's cousin instead of her tio, he wore a brown jacket. That's why I draw him as a teenager with a brown jacket.
I think teenage Bruno would’ve lent his jacket to Pepa on occasion to keep her dry during her rainstorms.
