The reason the work youâve done on how you feel doesnât seem like itâs working is because you need to do it until it works. Itâs never been âthis strategy will pull you upâ itâs always been âhereâs something you can do that will END with you getting out of that holeâ the climbing still hurts and the being underground still hurts but that doesnât mean itâs not working

âChildhood trauma can affect a person so greatly because of its prescence in the time of developmemt. Events that would normally change a person become embedded in every fiber of oneâs identity. It is this time of life which is so crucial to your entire future. This is the unique nature of C-PTSD, which doesnât merely change a person, it creates them. It builds every trait, interest, and understanding of the world with this toxin. Nothing is unaffected or unaltered because all there is to alter was created by the trauma. Moving forward is not moving back to before the trauma, it is in every essence a rebirth and reeducation of life itself. To move on we can not erase, because to erase traumaâs effect we in theory erase ourselves.â

âHowâ Skills | Mindfulness

We taught you the âwhatâ skills of mindfulness, now itâs time for the HOW!
How skills are how you should be doing the what skills, or how you should be practicing mindfulness. The goal is to include these 3 skills in everything you do. (It sounds daunting but if you approach it with an open mind, it can be done and eventually becomes second nature.)
1. Nonjudgmentally
This is one Iâm working on hardcore. Living life nonjudgmentally means that you are trying not to judge yourself and others. You are letting go of any preconceived notions or expectations. You are taking on an attitude of compassion towards yourself and others. You are letting go.
Living life nonjudgmentally can be extremely liberating. It facilitates compassion and inner peace (hokey, I know). But really, it cultivates a level of chill. If youâre not focused on the people around you, and if youâre not wasting time being harsh to yourself, youâre left with a ton of time and brain space to do more positive things.Â
Ex: So today I was walking to class and this girl in front of me was wearing super short shorts and her bum was hanging out. For a split second I thought âewâ but then I corrected myself. Maybe she doesnât know how short her shorts are. Maybe she LOVES those shorts. Maybe she feels comfortable enough with her body to wear whatever. So I quickly switched my âewâ to a âyou do you, girl.â
Ex: Imagine you just went out to lunch with a group of friends. Now youâre at home, and youâre starting to review how you acted in your mind. Some thoughts start popping up. âI was too loud.â âI think I talked too much.â âI was obnoxious.â Then things start snowballing: âIâm a bad friend.â âIâm a terrible person.â NOW STOP. Try to think nonjudgmentally. Just notice your thoughts. âIâm feeling insecure about how I acted.â Try to stop judging yourself for the way you acted. Would you judge a loved one like that? Do you really think people noticed how you think you acted? If you did act that way, how much does it matter? Would your friends even remember?Â
2. One-mindfully
One-mindfully is about keeping your mind in the moment. To do something one-mindfully is to be entirely focused on the task. Try not to think about what youâre doing tomorrow, or even an hour from now. Try not to think about what happened yesterday. Itâs all about the NOW, living  Itâs all very zen.Â
The point of this skill is to help you experience life. If your head is always stuck in the future or the past, youâre not appreciating what is happening in the moment. This type of mindfulness can greatly improve your quality of life by helping you enjoy the present. It can also improve your memory! Have you ever struggled to remember what you ate for breakfast just hours earlier? Itâs probably because you werenât being mindful. Focusing on the process of eating that breakfast and doing nothing but eating it can help you remember the moment in the future.Â
Ex: If youâre doing the dishes, just do the dishes. Donât think about something stupid you said earlier. Donât think about the 50 pages in Spanish you need to read for tomorrow. Focus on the sensation of the hot water on your hands, the smell of the soap, the squeak of the dishes.Â
3. Effectively
In DBT, they tell you that doing something effectively is not âbiting off your nose to spite your face.â That may be a little hard to understand. Doing something effectively is making life the easiest it can be for you. I like to think about it like the opposite of being a toddler. If youâre a toddler, odds are when something doesnât go your way youâll throw a temper tantrum. Youâll kick and scream and make a scene because your mom didnât let you have a second juice box. Throwing a tantrum is not going to get you that second juice box. In fact, itâs probably going to land you in a time-out. Behaving effectively is NOT throwing that tantrum. Itâs all about realizing that throwing a tantrum is going to hurt you, not help you. So instead, you accept the situation and do all you can to make it easier on you.
Ex: Your boss gives you a huge, last minute project to do. Youâre pissed because you thought you had the night off and wanted to spend it relaxing. You have several options: 1. You could go into a rage and tell your boss that youâre absolutely not going to do this project. In this case, you run the risk of getting fired, which is definitely not something you want. 2. You could say sure youâll do your best, and go home and work on the project for most of the night, but stop at a reasonable time, watch your favorite tv show, and go to bed. #1 would be throwing that temper tantrum. #2 would be behaving effectively. Youâre doing your best and not making the whole situation worse for yourself.Â

push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise.
push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable.
get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else.
stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything.
buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.
buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small.
strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full.
organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you donât want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle.
have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.
push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dogâs behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog.
message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you donât follow through. push yourself to follow through.
think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything.
become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends.
lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasnât a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you.
