Ideas consistently come and go with writers. The most recent that have been lingering with me are somewhat intriguing fantasy inspired by Elden Ring specifically the character classes mixed with an older idea. I’ve worked on a first chapter but it’s been slow going due to the distraction of what continues to happen across the United States. Hats off to other people who work through such things and keep working despite what’s going on around us.

Anyway here is the rough cut of chapter 1. The book, because I always come up with titles to go with the idea/theme of things, is Wonderer but subject to change as it develops.

Miserable. The small fire unable to banish the spring chill seeping into Ymirs soul. She pulled her weather worn cloak tighter, it has faded to a maroon color of old blood. But the cold persists. Her bloodbay mare Moonstar wickers quietly, more protected under the large fir tree they had found for shelter, rubs her nose on Ymirs shoulder. She reaches up, stroking Moonstars muzzle.

“I’ll find us something better tomorrow.” Ymir promised, stoking the fire and leaned back. Feeling herself drift into restlessness and nightmares. The same scene replaying again waiting for her when she closed her eyes.

Around dawn the lingering drizzle finally cleared and the sun cleared up the fog. Moonstar nibbled at any new patch of grass within reach.

Ymir stirred and stretched, trying to shake off the nights dampness. She stood up and walked around the tree, pulling dried meat from a small satchel and chewing on it. Her meager rations running lower by the day.

Moonstar moved further from under the tree into sunlight, enjoying it and the breeze while chopping up more dew covered grass.

While chewing slowly Ymir pulled on a poorly drawn map, trying to divine what direction could be some form of others. Hopefully friendly.

A noise from the west, loud clanging rang true through the sparse forest. Moonstars ears perked in the direction.

Ymir quickly put Moonstars saddle and tack onto her, thrilled.

Signs of battle means signs of conflict. Signs of conflict means she could find meaningful death. She would not leave this world easy of course. Unless there was a worthy foe for her.

She climbed onto Moonstars saddle and drew her trusty worn battle axe. Urging Moonstar into the direction.
