488. Celebrities Favorite Lipsticks in 1998.
I've been wanting to compile some photos of 90s makeup, and there was an Erin Parsons TikTok recently about the popularity of Chanel's Vamp lipstick and nail polish. Now, behind her in the video was a screenshot of a newspaper article from 1998 that had a list of what celebrities wore what lipstick:
And of course, you know me I love old newspapers. I had to search high and low for this article, since I don't have a newspapers.com account. This article was syndicated in late December 1998, into early January of 1999. Here is the archived text version. Here are the screenshots from the The Tuscaloosa News Jan 3, 1999 article (1, 2)
You're going to notice some trends.
(please go to the Wordpress Mirror to see the rest, Tumblr is being a jerk about posts with a bunch of images, sadly)

Cosmetic Vessel in the Shape of a Cat
Middle Kingdom
Ca. 1990–1900 B.C.
Egypt
The cat first appears in painting and relief at the end of the Old Kingdom, and this cosmetic jar is the earliest-known three-dimensional representation of the animal in Egyptian art. The sculptor demonstrates a keen understanding of the creature's physical traits, giving the animal the alert, tense look of a hunter rather than the elegant aloofness seen in later representations. The rock-crystal eyes, lined with copper, enhance the impression of readiness.
Travertine (Egyptian alabaster), copper, quartz crystal, paint.
H. 14 (5 1/2 in.); l. 13.7 cm (5 3/8 in.); w. 6.2 cm (2 7/16 in.).

y2kommercials part 2
A video I made compiling some commercials from the late 90s and early 00s and mashing up two songs from genres I think represent the y2k era.
I want to make these into a series but my 3-year-old laptop nearly froze and crashed making this so I won’t be able to make these as often as I want to.

Cosmetic surgery is not “cosmetic,” and human flesh is not “plastic.” Even the names trivialize what it is. It’s not like ironing wrinkles in fabric, or tuning up a car, or altering outmoded clothes, the current metaphors. Trivialization and infantilization pervade the surgeons’ language when they speak to women: “a nip,” a “tummy tuck.” Rees writes, describing a second-degree acid burn over the face: “Remember when you were in school and you skinned your knee and a scab formed?” This baby talk falsifies reality. Surgery changes one forever, the mind as well as the body.
