🖤 Proportion of Crossover fics

At the time of posting, Crossover Fics accounted for 13% of the total fanfics on Ao3 (9177 works) (Fig 1A). They were predominantly featured in Batman All Media Types (5097 works) or DCU (1034 works), accounting for 68% of all crossover fics (Fig 1D). The majority of the works were rated for General (39%) or Teen Audiences (39%) (Fig 1B).

Hi there. I was not a fan during LHH so I found your tags (agreeing with Gina's reply to an anon) interesting. I didn't realize that phase represented a rebellion for him. What else did he do to show his femme side during that period? Thanks!

Hey, love. I don’t have too much energy tonight, so I’m going to try and answer this as concisely as possible, but still give context.

Just to give a bit of personal background, I came into the 1D (not yet Larry, until about 4-5 months afterwards) fandom in 2015, right before Zayn left, so most of my observations are retrospective, vis-a-vis how I’m seeing the GP/hets react to LHH now.

So, at that point, Harry was already in his LHH era, but it had only gotten long enough that the GP were starting to notice it was purposeful and that he clearly was not planning to trim it/cut it back to Prince Hair. Since I was about 80-20 still in the GP, but was starting my 1D obsession, I had no one talk to about the boys except my IRL friends. And I remember distinctly that they were all convinced Harry was gay because of:

- LHH

- the patterned, unbuttoned polos

- his pretty “loud” affinity for YSL

- painting one nail or leaving one nail half painted

And to the lucky few in the know, also because of:

- the rumors that he was begged to wipe off his lipstick before a live taping of GMA, or so a CDAN blind said

As I delved further into fandom, I saw a broad and shallow part of discourse around all these things, but the loudest voices at the time (because I was on Twitter) were hets who were either: i) vehemently insisting he was ABSOLUTELY NOT gay or feminine or ii) being very vocal about how they were no longer attracted to him because of one or all of the reasons above.

Now, I know looking at both Harry and the world at present, none of the things I’ve listed seems remotely “femme” or earth-shattering, but again, this is where context matters.

It was 2015, so discussions regarding gender nonconformity were, in my humble experience, largely still limited to the LGBTQI+ community and had not made it into everyday, mainstream conversation yet. On top of that, Harry’s image was only just inching its way past the hyper teenage heartthrob frat boy phase but was only allowed to veer far enough that his style still “fit” with the rest of the boys and was designed to look more like the groups’ style maturing all together.

No one saw him as a fashion icon yet, because his image had been so carefully curated. So, when he came out wearing that black and white floral suit, standing next to the other boys, the statement read like rebellion, as opposed to him pushing the fashion envelope the way it does now.

Coupled with the fact that he was still, very much, seen as a member of a boyband, the GP didn’t see him growing his hair as any kind of homage or nod to Jagger or Lennon or Slash, because Harry’s image wasn’t at all in the realm of rock; he wasn’t even seen as a proper musician.

So if you put all those things together, you begin to see that growing his hair and painting his nails and dressing the way he did (as conservative as it may seem, compared to him now) was a big, big risk, considering how he was marketed, whom to, and the conversations that image of him was inspiring in those circles.

And that’s why, to me, LHH is one of the loudest, banging-on-the-glass-closetest eras of Harry there is, so it makes it very, very odd to see LHH characterized in Tiktoks as “Dark Harry”/the new “Fratboyrry”/het Harrie fantasy era.

I started in 1D (Larry mostly though I've done a couple of threesomes) and then I shifted to HP - I think I've only written main Drarry? I've dabbled a tiny bit in Stucky and I've written one 911 Buddie fic (but I'm working on another one!)

Unhhhh most of them honestly! I will say, I do SOMEtimes VERY RARELY put some pain on the journey to HEA so if I had to guess, I'd say that all of me (loves all of you) (Drarry) is probably my most unabashedly sappy no-angst fluff.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not to my face anyway! I'm sure there are people who don't like my writing but I think they ignore me more than anything! One of the perks of being a very small writer, I think!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Sure do! For kind, I write slash, I guess you'd call it (gay), almost all of it M/M. I have one girl!fic. I don't really write too much kink, I'd say most of what I do is pretty vanilla. Healthy communication is my kink, I guess!

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Ummm off the top of my head, no?

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge. I read one fic that was not a plagiarism of my actual work but was literally the exact same plot, the exact same story beats, the exact same setting etc. I am well-aware there's nothing new under the sun but I read it and was like, unhhh. It's one of my greatest fears honestly - accidentally taking someone's fic!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not that I know. I've been approached, but I'm not comfortable with it.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yup! Twice! Both in the Larry fandom. One was with one other writer (who's long gone from fandom as far as I know) and one (Wine Not) I wrote with a big group of people who've become some of my absolute closest friends!

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

I don't have one specific. The ones I write for, I obviously feel very very strongly about, but the bummer for me is that when I'm writing in a particular pair, I don't read anything in that pairing! I also don't read for the ship, but for the story and the writing, so I read in a LOT of different pairings!

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Fuck me, so many.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Oof, I'm not sure! I'm not a trained writer by any means. I think I do scene setting pretty well?

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Pacing, for sure. It's really hard and I can get bogged down in the "and then THIS happened and then THIS happened and then THIS happened" - I'm so linear, so I have to push myself there.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Generally no. I've sprinkled in a few words here and there, but I wouldn't do much of it, and if I had to, I would 1000% find someone to help me with it and not rely on Google translate.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Larry. Still writing there and kinda following along a bit but I'm not active in that fandom anymore other than the writing.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

I'm not sure I have one fav fic - I'd say I'm really proud of my long (for me) fics! Those are hard for me, and there's a couple that are really really personal. But I have to say, Maybe You're the Difference (Drarry) is one I really like and am really proud of. I worked so so hard on it.

new here! I love your takes and headcanons and your writing so I'm curious when you got into hockey/rpf/etc. slash what got you into it

welcome, friend! the short answer to your question is that i am a proud product of the 1D to hockey pipeline. in spring 2020 all my best 1D fandom pals gradually got into hockey, one by one. i joined the migration when i was introduced to tk/patty, and now we are all happily shipping various hockey ships instead of various harry styles ships.

the pipeline is so effective because hockey is built on same twin pillars that made 1D such a shipping goldmine: performative friendship and casual homoeroticism. it’s also ideally suited for my ADHD brain… i have a short attention span and hockey just keeps on churning out new boys to engage me. i love getting in on the ground level and helping to establish the fandom characterization for a shiny new boy!

the extended answer is that i was into rpf before i even knew what it was. in high school i wrote lil stories in my lil spiral notebook about the two soccer players in my geometry class who i thought should kiss. years and years later, i watched the 2016 olympics and thought that ryan lochte and michael phelps should also kiss, only this time i googled that concept and discovered that there’s a whole world full of people who are also dedicated to writing lil stories about athletes kissing! imagine my joy!

it was truly, truly absurd. the dolls? the bears? the way louis and harry couldn't even interact, ever, because of how outrageous it got? phew // I was actively in the 1D fandom when this was going down and maybe because it’s been so long, but I feel like kaylor has gotten worse also they also kinda have their own beats situation with that IG Karlie was pushing of that toy that they said was their daughters name or whatever

i disagree, i think larry was hands down way worse, partly because they were men and slash/mlm fandom is more popular and acceptable, but also because they were bandmates so the fandom had A LOT more content to work with for years and a lot more time to be intense about it

Do you mind if I make a wild accusation based on the hiatus timeline?

I think all three Liam, Niall and Louis did actually believe it was a hiatus in the beginning. I guess the other two guys realised quite quickly that the roll-out for Harry's career was not just for a side project, they needed to find their own record deals. Given the relationship Louis had with Harry, he thought Harry would never betray him and the band would get back together at some point. Additionally, he did not want to be a solo artist. He was biding his time doing side projects. He didn't feel this was a permanent thing so he didn't really shop around for a proper record deal. He also carried the insecurities from the 1D days and not getting many singing parts to actually market himself as a solo artist. He just took the Syco deal who wanted him primarily to be on xfactor. They kept treating Louis the way they did in the 1D days. They showed no faith in his album or musical talent. They completely slashed his promo and got him blacklisted when they realised the big overlap between his and Harry's fanbase (i.e. the Larries). This was important because Harry's pop music career was their long term money maker and Louis' was just a distraction.

For Louis this was the cut off point when he decided to severe his final ties with Harry as well as Syco.

I generally agree - however I don't think Louis even had the opportunity to "shop around for a label". I don't remember how it's call (right of release?) anyways there's this contractual thing that allows the label to keep an artist if they outbid the other label. I read about it a long time ago and it's far in my head now. But basically if Louis had gone to UMG, Sony could have kept him. Which makes shopping around when you're signed to one a the big major difficult. Zayn signed with RCA (Sony). Harry created his own label (under Sony). Liam and Niall signed outside of Sony. I'm pretty sure Louis never had the chance to considering another major. He probably didn't want to create his own label given solo stuff wasn't on his mind. Syco seemed like a continuation of a relationship.

He ended up leaving Syco because it went bankrupt. It's clear he owed Syco/Sony at least an album and a tour, since he couldn't release FITF before or during LTWT. It's possible his participation to the XFactor was used as a contractual deliverable (as at the time it seemed to replace the release of LT0)(theory). I can't imagine how complicated the legalities of "cutting ties" with Syco/Sony were. Artist usually sign deals for several albums (1D was 5 albums, Harry is 4). It's possible Louis had signed for only 1, since he wasn't sure about his solo career. It's possible that, for reasons that we'll probably never know, Sony agreed to end its contract prior do the deliveries of all the albums. If I remember correctly (but vaguely), some of Syco's artists were moved to another label under Sony.

In any case, it's so obvious that Louis' solo career was crushed following the success of JHO and BTY, it's clear that HS1 wasn't the success that Sony had wanted, and it's clear that those trajectories were inverted for them around 2017-2018 - so mysteriously!! - when LT0 was shelved/Louis had to do XFUK and Harry went back to the studio to write a pop album with Rob Stringer breathing down his neck so he would get his return on investment. And when Louis finally release his solo album, it was so long after the hiatus that he lost all the momentum and his fanbase was decimated - just look at the abyssmal different in streaming numbers between JHO/BTY/Miss You even and Walls' most popular songs.
