So Eddie wants "Chemistry". That's what he believes in. He wants what he had with Shannon, and yes he loved her to a certain degree, but it cannot be denied their relationship was NOT healthy, likely never was healthy, and was never going to be healthy. Hence why Shannon asked for a divorce, since she seemed to be the only one at the time who could recognize their relationship for what it was.
And Eddie himself fell into this trap when Shannon came back, feeling this "chemistry" with her that resulted in them falling into bed together multiple times, but never actually fixing or growing their personal relationship. Never mending their trust issues. It's just funny that Eddie was saying he wanted what he had with Shannon, when even he admits that it wasn't a healthy relationship. I'm not saying he's not allowed to look back on his relationship with her fondly, but I truly can't help but feel like he looks back on his ROMANTIC relationship with her with rose-colored glasses.
Now back to Chemistry. It's kind of a nebulous phrase, doesn't really have a clear meaning. To me, chemistry is often something that comes in the early stages of a relationship. Kind of like infatuation, or butterflies or "magic" like Eddie says (let's be fucking real Eddie and Shannon were not magic).
I'll bring it back to this chart:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Any way you look at it, it comes out like this.
Eddie:
Shannon- highly emotional, idealistic, weakened by separation, seeking to find happiness, in love with "emotion".
Ana- sudden, idealistic, based on a feeling, seeking to find happiness, focusing on external looks (ie. she's exact what I should want), seeking to get
Marisol- sudden, idealistic, based on a feeling, seeking to find happiness, seeking to get
Buck:
Abby- highly emotional, idealistic, weakened by separation, seeking to find happiness, focusing on external looks, in love with "emotion"
Ali- sudden, idealistic, weakened by separation, seeking to get
Taylor- highly emotional, based on a feeling, seeking to find happiness, focusing on external looks, seeking to get
Natalia- literally the entire "infatuation" column.
Now Buck and Eddie? I could write a dissertation on how they fit into literally every single point listed in the "love" column.

TK constantly acknowledges that he fucks up, apologizes, and he calls himself names while doing so. He apologized and called himself "crazy" for not responding well to Carlos's surprise date in season 1. He apologized and called himself a "bitch" for being upset that Carlos didn't introduce him to his parents in season 2. He tried to apologize for fighting with Carlos in season 2, and Carlos said something about agreeing not to, meaning that they had talked about it. He apologized and said that he "screwed up" for talking to Iris now in season 4.
Idk what show you are watching, honestly.
Yes. TK does. TK has also been in therapy since he was seven (even if he’s mostly applied those strategies after rehab), has two parents who were in law school and process everything verbally even if it’s not effective. TK has better skills around communication and always has. I’ve argued that since I started watching the show. There’s several metas.
But no one drags him through his fuck ups, he owns them naturally and in some cases, I think he over apologizes. TK drags himself through his fuck ups. But I think TK is used to being, occasionally, the most functional being in the room with his parents and does a lot of managing of situations. He’s always apologizing and sometimes over apologizing. It’s who TK is.
Carlos, meanwhile, does not process verbally. He never has. He sits and stews. He gets petty and doesn’t own his parts. He’s a perfectionist who is terrified that if he’s wrong or fucks up he won’t be enough or loved and is driven to be the best he can to the point he occasionally lies or gaslights people in order to not own his shit. He’s been like that since season one.
He has two parents who he came out to at 17 who never mentioned it again, even with him turning around and getting married at 18-20 and that marriage rapidly falling apart. Like? They don’t talk. About anything. We see it in how stoic Gabriel is in 2.08 and is shocked when Carlos lashes out. Carlos says that the most emotional he’s ever seen his father is 2.12 after the arson. Even in 4.04 TK takes a moment to lash out at Gabriel for keeping everything so close. This is the man Carlos has been trying to impress his whole life. Gabriel Reyes is a man who very clearly believes actions speak a lot louder than words and Carlos is very similar.
Carlos has also, to my knowledge, never been in therapy. TK is the better communicator (I’ve said that since I’ve started watching the show). He’s been slowly learning communication skills from TK. We’ve seen such a change from season 1/2 when Carlos would call TK crazy for holding boundaries or pretending TK’s assessment of meeting the parents wasn’t weird. Instead we’ve seen a progression to season 3 where Carlos doesn’t entirely pretend everything’s fine but opens up before TK disappears in 3.13. We get a man in season 4 who doesn’t try and fix it without telling TK but goes to him and tries to come up with a plan.
Carlos does not tend to apologize verbally like TK. He apologizes, most frequently, through action. We see it in 1.03 when Carlos asks TKK out on a real date instead of trying to manufacture a date out of a booty call. We see it in 2.12 when TK tries to apologize for the fight at the firehouse and he’s cooking dinner and tells TK to leave it. We see it in 3.04 where he immediately takes TK home and has already moved TK in. We see it in 3.13 when Carlos calls Cooper and puts a pizza in the oven and leaves.
The only real verbal apologies we get out of him is, aside from stupid things when TK almost died, is the one about his parents which required TK pushing him not once, but twice on the issue. TK did call himself a little bitch (but he wasn’t fucking sorry about it) and told Carlos how unsafe he felt because of Carlos’s actions and that’s when Carlos apologized. He often needs to be confronted with how his actions affect people to apologize and there wasn’t time for all that processing here.
They’re both petty bitches and I love that so much.
That’s the show I’m watching. I’m not surprised Carlos was icy in 4.03. He’s icy whenever he’s upset, even if it’s himself he’s mad at. He projects his anxieties like crazy. While I think TK felt blamed and blamed himself (because he always does even if it’s not his fault - with like everyone including his parents) I think knowing Carlos, he mostly blamed himself, and took it out a little on TK, which isn’t cool mind you, it’s not okay. But my boys are both fuck ups in their own right and I love them an insane amount.
Y’all Carlos Reyes is a man who cooked a full candle light meal after sending the equivalent of a “you up” text. This is a man who bought a whole ass condo without telling his partner after they’d agreed not to buy it. Like…I don’t know why any of you expect this man to have communication skills. He has to be pushed into literally every conversation/speech he’s ever had about his feelings. I don’t know why TK thought Carlos could even deliver a heartfelt speech to their friends about being engaged. It’s not his style.
But TK has them in spades. It’s one of the reasons they work together. Like puzzle pieces. So…yes. I will keep them and I don’t need to be hit over the head with Carlos’s fuck ups because I’ve witnessed them from 1.02…he’s always been a mess y’all. He just pretends really well and I love him for it.
He still needs therapy.

went down a rabbithole of discourse to see what people mean when they say they don't like the wedding and well
let me ask you this:
do you not the like this plotline because it's "poor writing" (even though it was literally planned from the start, ie rafael knowing) or you do not like it because it shows that carlos isn't a saint with minimal, "cute" flaws, here to help tk get better?
do you not like iris or are you villainising her because she's "getting in the way of your ship" and doesn’t act in a neurotypical way, or in what you're "used to" seeing from neurodivergent characters?
really think about these cause i think you might figure some things out.
now i haven't made it a secret that i'm liking this plotline, but i'm not just gonna call out one side without explaining mine, that would just be unfair, so here are my full thoughts now that ep2 is out
i love this plotline because it's an opportunity to delve into carlos' character development, which when compared to tk, we haven't had much. like sure, they've been a couple and stuff but apart from the jealousy with connor and the issue with his parents, what have we really learned about carlos? compared to all the development we've had from tk, carlos at times felt very much like a tool for tk to move forward, because the character himself still had such limited growth opportunities
now the marriage plotline is his time to shine. i recently reblogged a post where it was mentioned that tk came full circle in the first 3 seasons, starting with a failed proposal and ending with a successful one, so i think that tk at this point is okay to take a secondary, and just overall less dramatic approach to his character development. because we've seen him go through the big things. now it's carlos' turn to do like a pokemon and evolve.
we get to see the full scope of his anxiety, internalised homophobia, and saviour complex.
it's already a huge step that he talked to tk about it before he took care of the divorce. people with anxiety disorders (it's me hi i'm people) can tell you that bringing up a problem without having a solution is next to inconceivable. we feel like we always need to have solutions for our problems and if we don't, then people can't know about them. so the fact that carlos trusted tk enough to tell him (albeit after being "forced" to by andrea) tells you a lot about just how much he cares. and we also got the opportunity of seeing tk's growth because he didn't take it personally, didn't think this was against him, he understood that this was carlos' own problems and just like carlos helped him deal with his issues, tk's gonna help him deal with this.
it also shows just how far carlos' internalised homophobia went, and shows that even though most of it wasn't on screen, he's done amazing progress. the conversation on the couch is a testament to that growth, to him realising he wasn't broken at all. it's also a great way to show internalised homophobia, because it's something that most queer people go through, especially at the beginning, and i think it's beautiful to show that no matter how much time passes or how many mistakes you make, the important part of it is that you found yourself, the rest can be taken care of later.
and of course, his saviour complex. we saw it when he let the bank robber go, we saw it when he broke down because he felt like he failed tk by not having enough fire extinguishers to protect him, and we see it now by him staying married to iris for the health insurance. abd not going to see her because in some way, he feels like he failed her. maybe he should have noticed her illness sooner, or he should have been there with michelle from the start, but he didn't know what to do or what to say so he just didn't go. which again, if you have an anxiety disorder, you can relate. sometimes when things feel too hard or we don't have a set plan for everything that's gonna happen, or we make it harder than it is in our minds, we just don't go. speaking from experience, i ghosted my therapist for a year cause i forgot to call in sick for one appointment and thought she would judge me so i didn't go back. that's just how much anxiety can affect you, and for carlos, this is his "monster", this marriage is the thing that he desperately wants to fix but doesn't know how, finds too complicated, so he's stuck where he is because he's just not able to fix it.
and it's amazing to see how much tk gives him strength, the trust they share, and how carlos found his motivation in tk. that's love and from one anxious person to another, i'm really proud of carlos
now as for iris, i love her, i really do. she shows a mental illness that we don't always see, and normalises the fact that even after being medicated, neurodivergent people aren’t just suddenly gonna be "fixed". she's saner with her medication but we see how she finds it hard to communicate because her brain just works differently. when can see during her talk of an annulment, she thought she was being obvious the whole time, and it was only after tk asked for an explanation that she realised she needed to express this better. she doesn't mean her questions maliciously (ie carlos warning tk beforehand and being ready to step in if it got too much while also trusting that his fiancé can hold his own), she just has questions and asks them. she asks them because she's curious, because she's worried about carlos, because she wants to know more about tk. she doesn't have that little voice in her head telling her that her questions can be taken the wrong way.
and the part everyone's mad about, with her calling tk carlos' life's work. she didn't say it to insult tk, she didn't say it because she thinks he doesn't deserve carlos, she said it because in her mind it proves how perfect they are for each other. "always needs a project" + "can be his life's work" = soulmates. and idk if i understood that because i'm neurodivergent or because whatever else, but it made sense in my brain, i get her.
and ofc, it's a great opening to show off tarlos' ability to communicate with each other and both their individual and joint growth.
now for the fact that they can't get an annulment, i'm honestly not sure that was the plan at all, it might have been brought in just for the symbolism and after realising they can't do it, they'll have to stick with divorce. i don't know, i'm hapoy to let the writers surprise me and then pick apart and analyse the story as it comes.
and for the fact that iris is now missing, again, don't have many thoughts about it right now other than i think she went looking for the woman at the care center that she talked about when tk first got there, bc that comment felt too pointed not to become a plot point. but again, i'll hold any thoughts until after the episode air.
i see so many people getting stuck on what could happen, and what was "seen coming" etc, but honestly, just trust the writers. we know it will end in a wedding, ronen and rafael trust the writers fully, and that's good enough for me you know. i'm not gonna stress about what "could happen" in a tv show, i do that enough irl. i'm just gonna enjoy the ride.
so yeah that was me

I’m not sure if this will interest anyone, but since @eddiediass located the movie (Black Sunday) that inspired the s6 opening disaster, and because I know a few people were wondering how much of the movie would the show adopt...
I ended up watching the movie. I realized even before I started watching, when I just read a short plot summary, that it was very much shaped by the current events of the time, the 1970′s. That made me wanna look up some background info on how the movie came to be, which was kind of perfect as my vertigo makes it difficult to watch anything without pauses. In case you don’t know, the movie is about a Vietnam vet joining forces with a Palestinian terrorist to carry out a terror attack in the form of them crashing a blimp into a stadium. The novel that the movie is based on was published in 1975, the same year the Vietnam war ended. That was also the same decade when Palestinian terrorists were often kidnapping international flights in order to hold the passengers hostage for all sorts of demands (money, fellow terrorists released from prisons all over the world, etc).
So yeah, that kinda played out in the back of my mind. The airplane jackings, the most famous of which ended with the successful Entebbe rescue operation in 1976, where the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) managed to free the hostages despite having to travel 2,860 miles to do so. The Ma’alot massacre in 1974, when Palestinian terrorists infiltrated Israel from Lebanon and took a bunch of kids sleeping in the local school hostages. The IDF tried to free them, but were only partly successful, and ultimately this ended with the murder of 31 civilians in total. Most of them were kids. Just consider having that in the back of your mind as you fly across 2,860 miles to free Israeli and Jewish hostages (all the non-Jewish passengers were released by the terrorists), asking yourself whether you’ll succeed every step of the way.
But the terrorist attack that actually first jumped out at me when I was reading the summary was the 1972 kidnapping and subsequent massacre of 11 Israeli Olympic athletes by Palestinian terrorists at the Olympic games in Munich. Funnily enough, I was just recently thinking about One Day in September, an Oscar winning documentary about this massacre. I believe it’s one of the best documentaries I’d ever seen, for several reasons, including the fact that it revealed some truths and failures of the German government a lot of people were not aware of. Sep 5, 2022 marks exactly 50 years since that massacre. It’s only now that the German government is going to officially take responsibility for the Munich massacre and compensate the families of the victims. So since it’s been on the news, I’ve been thinking about that excellent documentary and would like to rec it to everyone. If you don’t take anything else from this post, please watch this documentary, it shook me to my core.
Oh, another reason why this massacre has been on the news recently is that in August, Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, was visiting Germany. He was one of the men who helped the Munich massacre happen. During a press call with the German chancellor, he was asked whether he would apologize to Israel and Germany for that attack (the journalist didn’t mention Abbas’ personal part in the massacre). In response, Abbas blamed Israel of having committed “50 Holocausts”.
Anyway, turns out my first thought was right on the mark. Apparently, the novel was written in reaction to the massacre of the Israeli athletes in Munich. In fact, the Palestinian terrorist group that carried out the Munich massacre, Black September, was explicitly named in the film as being the one putting together the blimp terrorist attack. And in fact, it had to be a serious terrorist organization behind it, since in the movie, it’s not just the blimp that’s about to be crashed into the stadium, the attack also involves setting off explosives and over 220,000 rifle darts from the blimp.
Other things that stood out to me were the inclusion of a Japanese terrorist (this is probably in reference to the collaboration of Palestinian terrorists with the terror organization The Japanese Red Army, which carried out in Israel the 1972 massacre at Lod airport, where 25 civilians were murdered) and mentioning Libya financing the attack (something I only found out recently, while watching a documentary about the Libyan tyrant, Muammar Gaddafi, is that he did in fact finance, among other terrorist acts, the Munich massacre). There was one character I was baffled about. The Israeli Mossad agent looking to stop the attack turns to a Colonel Riat for help. The Israeli agent mentioned an Egyptian “expelled by you”, so at first I thought maybe this colonel was Jordanian. After all, ‘Black September’ was initially set up to take revenge on the Jordanians who in September 1970 killed and expelled thousands of Palestinians due to the attempt by the Palestine Liberation Organization (a terrorist organization back then led by Yasser Arafat) to seize power in Jordan, an event referred to as “black September”. But checking out some info online, it seems like this man was supposed to be an Egyptian, which makes a lot of what he says to the Israeli Mossad agent either not make sense or come off as incredibly hypocritical. TBH, even beyond what he says, it makes less sense for the Mossad agent to go off the record to an Egyptian for help in identifying a Black September terrorist, than to go to Jordan, which had a great interest in seeing Black September fail. This stood out to me especially after I’ve recently learned from a documentary about Jordan’s King Hussein that when the Syrians were moving to aid the Palestinian attempted coup, he secretly turned to Israel for help in stopping the Syrians from invading Jordan.
Now is the movie good? Maybe the novel is. I can’t read it (thanks again, vertigo), so I can’t tell you for sure. But the film is def lacking. While somewhat historically interesting in tying together all of these events, and considering what’s accurate and what’s not, the overall movie is just really weak. It takes time to even figure out who we’re meant to identify with, we find out so little about the characters and get even less about where they are emotionally, so it’s hard to cheer for any of them. The subjects are topical for the 1970′s, though blending together the mistreatment of Vietnam vets with the Palestinian terrorism plot took a lot out of the impact that the former subject could have. And at the same time, the look at the terrorist attack is used as a plot device to create tension, but without any seeming real care for this complex subject. The movie just ends up having absolutely nothing to say of any substance. The action might have been good if any of the events carried any emotional significance, beyond the general “killing lots of people is bad, gotta stop that.”
Anyway, given the international, complex threads of the original movie, which 911 isn’t generally interested in, and given how they’re handled in the movie without any heart, which is again so different to how our show cares about its main and even incidental characters, I really don’t think they’ll be borrowing anything from the movie other than the concept of a blimp disaster. Which is a bit of a shame, because as Dev mentioned, the vet not properly coping with trauma could have been a goldmine. Not in the way that movie deals with it, though. In short, I watched this movie so you don’t have to.

THE RED ROPE OF IT ALL THOUGH
Hey Nonnie
the red rope of it all indeed. I am obsessed with the use of red ropes in 911 (and yellow ones but thats for a different reason) and I wrote a meta on it - which I'm going to need to make some additions to I think!
This will be the first red rope we've seen since 4x13 when Buck and Eddie were both on red ropes whilst rescuing Sheila from her balcony (as an aside she was both up in the air and buried and I am very much enjoying the idea that she represents both of their stories in this way - that they both save each other etc etc!!) there were a lot of red rope in that scene - they were glaringly obvious and Buck and Eddie were the only ones connected to red ropes (and connected to the ladder truck).
And now we're getting another scene where the two of them are connected via a ladder truck to red ropes.
The reason I love this so much is that the show has already commented on the red string of fate - Carla in season 4 - almost like it was some sort of set up to put the idea into the viewers mind (I'd already got there by that point but the GA wouldn't have). the Red string of fate story Carla was telling wasn't just about romantic love - it was a bout the idea (which is the more modern way of thinking about them) that we have multiple strings - that connect us to people who play an important part in our story - people who are meant to be together - best friends, adopted children and family. Carla giving this information to the Diaz boys together is important because it ties Christopher into Buck and Eddie as well - the idea that all three of them are connected to each other. I think its fair to centralise this concept on the Buckley-Diaz family because we've only seen red ropes on Buck and Eddie with one exception - Chimney - when he went down into the well to rescue Hayden.
The reason this is relevant is that Buck was on the end of that rope with Chim and they're family - they're brothers-in-law (soon to be legally if we get the Madney engagement we're expecting) and that same line was about to be dropped back down to get Eddie - still connected to Buck. To me that is all foreshadowing - the only ones we've seen connected by red ropes are actual family or the ones the show is building towards becoming an actual family.
And I'm being very very normal about it all!!💜💜💜

m'kay, so your obsessive posting of RWRB is the reason I got Amazon Prime for a month so I could watch RWRB.
And now you're obsessing about 911 and I have to see endlessly reblogged gifsets and meta about 911. My DVD of season 1 arrived today and I watched 3 episodes. I'm going to sign up for Hulu this weekend so I can watch the other seasons.
AND I'M HOLDING YOU RESPONSIBLE! If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't need anything but Netflix. (also, i love your taste in shows)
Oh I am so excited for you!!!
Please send me all your random thoughts about 911 as you watch it!
I am just getting Mr. Lyric to watch. We made it to episode 4 of season 1 tonight. And now he wants a break (episode 4 is a sad one).
So obviously I need someone else to talk to 😊.
If you end up not like my it, I will take your criticism as well. I’m tough like that. 💪

I am LOVING your 911 takes, man [gn]!!! honestly, it's such a breath of fresh air after all the "the writers are actually geniuses and you lack basic reading comprehension skills if you cannot perceive their Great Big Technicolor Plan!" like, really, really??! this is a pretty run-of-the-mill tv show and frankly, I'm not seeing any high value shit that would justify this blind belief that they're doing anything except throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks as most tv shows of that calibre and genre do...
Hey thanks! 😊 I'm just screaming into the void over here, but honestly, like, what crack did they put in the first 3-4 seasons of this show because it should NOT be as good as it is as just another firefighter show. I used to watch CF but the constant musical beds is Not For Me and never has been so I think having a show that gives you couples to root for and then keeps them together?! That gives them drama but doesn't (usually) dial it up to soap opera levels but handles it like real people who make mistakes but also own those mistakes and learn and grow from them?! This show was SOOO good, and I think that's why I'm struggling so much now because now it IS getting to be soap opera levels of drama with Buck's stuff but the audience isn't here for that shit so they have to change it halfway through.
As for people reading deep into things, I DO like reading those metas! I CAN see what they're talking about, and I CAN see a depth to some choices or how it could work out in the end. But for me, knowing who is in charge and after having to witness the BT disaster and the "despite what s1 told everyone, Buck is a cheater actually and him and Hen agree you shouldn't tell your partner about it" mess, I think that it doesn't matter WHAT kind of narrative set up there is, or what makes sense for the characters, KR is going to twist anyone however she wants to make them fit into whatever plot SHE wants to write, NOT whatever plot would make sense for the characters. She's shown she's not above undermining the story or characters for the sake of drama or wedging in a character she actually cares about and wants to write for instead of working with the characters she was given. (GIRL! Just go pitch your own cop show and leave us TF aloooooone!) Also, a big thing for me is the JOURNEY. And the end destination being good or at least acceptable, does not always justify a shitty way to get there 🤷🏻‍♀️

Season 7 Press Article Buddie Analysis
Okay I don't usually write meta/spec on press runs/articles but I found these super fascinating today, especially in comparison to how the showrunners (including Tim himself) and the actors have spoken about their arcs in the past.
First I want to say that in these interviews the goal is never actually to give the audience any important information but rather to tease, and purposely be as vague as possible. So most of what they're saying will likely have double meanings and all of them are being extremely careful with the words they choose to say. Now with that out of the way in the first EW article (linked here), I found several things extremely interesting.
Tumblr media
Calling Marisol Eddie's "Hardware store flirtation". It's so funny to me, for one, but it's also interesting that that's all she's reduced to. A flirtation. I know that was really all they were in the last season, but we know Marisol's involved (likely minorly) in at least 2 episodes out of the first 5. Natalia on the other hand is for the most part understood to not be coming back (I would honestly be surprised given the actress is in NYC). But what's even more interesting is that Marisol is not mentioned anywhere else in either of these articles, meanwhile Oliver WAS asked about Natalia. So, I want people to keep in mind that in whatever way Marisol IS a part of this season, I SEVERELY doubt she's making it past the finale.
Tumblr media
2. This answer about Natalia is your typical non-answer but to me, it's basically a confirmation she isn't coming back, which lends a tad bit more credibility to Tommy potentially stepping in as a LI for Buck (fingers crossed).
Tumblr media
3. Buck is apparently called in to help talk to Christopher about dating women. Do I even really have to talk about how weird this sounds? Eddie had a whole WIFE? He dated Ana for many many months. He's currently dating hardware store flirtation Marisol right now. And yet, Ryan is claiming that Eddie feels like he doesn't know how to talk to his son about women? Enough so that he calls Buck to help? Talking to your kid about dating is a new avenue yes, but why are we acting like Eddie has never been with a woman before? Like I know last season in particular emphasized that Eddie isn't the best when it comes to dating but like ??? I swear to GOD y'all it's giving such severe compulsory heterosexuality. Eddie, my man, I hope this is indicative of where your story is going this season because it's been heading this way for many many many years. Separately, I also find the lack of mention of Shannon very interesting as well.
Tumblr media
4. Which brings me to this part. The whole family dynamic aside...Buck's romantic relationships have been severely questionable at best the entire show. Before Abby, it's canon that all Buck did was sleep around a lot, which doesn't seem like something you wanna tell a young teen dating for the first time. So what's he gonna talk about? How women flee him? As I saw someone else say on the timeline "are the successful relationships in the room with us"? This is especially odd if the spec is true and he and Natalia broke up off-screen prior to the start of the season. Eddie, you just saw Buck have yet another failed relationship with woman #4 and your thought is that HE'S the one best suited to talk to your son? These two men are so queer and so dumb, but their hearts are in the right place.
Okay, moving on to EW article #2 linked here. Here I'm shifting a little bit more to Tim Minear, and what he's said before in the past as showrunner about Buck, Eddie, the buddifer dynamic and the buddie ship.
Tumblr media
I have a love-hate relationship with Tim. On one hand, I think he's a far better showrunner than Kristen (for OG 911, 911 Lonestar does and always will suck ass). But on the other hand, I remember some of the things he said back when season 2 was airing. It's part of the reason why I can't take things like "he's so cute. he gets that a lot" or "does this boycrush on eddie mean you're over abby" or "you two have an adorable son" or any Big Buddie fanservice line in season 2 seriously or as any definitive proof of anything. Tim has openly admitted most of those were in season 2 to throw shippers a bone. Not to be taken seriously. And that didn't sit right with me. Very obviously, there was a shift in season 3 and no longer was buddie and shippers the butt of the joke. Season 3 is when I genuinely think the writers and Tim shifted from "haha this is funny" to "oh wait, maybe there IS something here" and obviously The Powers That Be (Fox) had some control over whether or not that happened and is honestly why I think it didn't happen in season 5 or 6 where it realistically could've fit very well after s4.
So firstly, please take everything I say with a grain of salt because Tim is a Known Liar and Word Twister and is very VERY good at saying a lot while absolutely saying nothing at all.
5. So...I find what he says in this article interesting because it's not in the first article. First, his word choice is very interesting. Using both "friendship" and "coupling" in the same sentence, which have two different connotations. Secondly, he says that "at their core" their relationship is about their friendship. When something is the core of something else, that doesn't mean that's all there is. The core may be the essence, or the foundation, or the glue of something. But it is something that is BUILT UPON, something that extends past the core. To me, it means that while the core of buddie's relationship is their friendship, their relationship encompasses much more than that. It's like those successful old married couples who say the key to being married happily for 50+ years is that "we're still best friends" or that "the key to a successful romantic relationship is having that foundation of strong friendship" etc. Now, I'm not SAYING this means canon buddie, but I just find it interesting that this is how Tim chose to describe them this time around. To me, that says Tim is very much aware that there's far more to be explored in their relationship than just their friendship. Whether that means far more buddifer family arcs, or an actual real exploration of Buck and Eddie as a romantic couple, I'm very excited to see where it goes.

So y’all know how the fandom always thinks of Buck as the easygoing people person and social sunshine, and of Eddie as the sometimes grumpy, eternally exhausted guy who’s “not good with words”? Yeah, there’s a lot of truth to it. That’s their actual personalities around people they’re comfortable with. But when it comes to first impressions? Things are VERY different. @evandiaz-buckley pointed this out as well - when they first meet, Eddie gets along with everyone so easily, but Buck is immediately threatened by that and he’s stand-offish at first.
We see this play out again in Texas. Eddie has that very easygoing “I just know how to deal with people” character trait, he’s flirty with Marjan (which - my reaction to this was “I don’t want it send it back”, but I also can’t blame a guy she’s CUTE), he bonds over guy things with Judd, he plays the army card (which he did with the 118 as well - he knows he’s awesome and he’s not afraid to put that image out there) - but Buck, because of his insecurity, because of his issue of always feeling like he doesn’t truly belong or he can’t really accept that the people he loves want him there, he has a very different reaction to meeting new people. The first thing he does is look for Eddie and Hen, he stays by their truck waiting for them to come back instead of going out to just engage with the others and he can’t believe they would abandon him with all strangers around him. They’re his security blanket, because he doesn’t have to prove anything to them. Eddie and Hen on the other hand, they just walk into groups of strangers going “hi what can I do?” and it takes them no time at all to connect.
When he finds out Hen already has a job to do, he’s excited to at least have Eddie to himself. “Just you and me” - he doesn’t even want others there, he just wants to be with the person he knows best. And again he’s dumbfounded that Eddie would just leave him like that. When he’s first introduced to Mateo and TK, he’s kind of stand-offish again, he doesn’t really want to engage at first and he’s not about the small talk, until they warm up trading war stories. Meanwhile, Hen’s already sharing with Owen about their trauma and Eddie’s found a new BFF in Judd and is subtly letting Marjan know he’s you know, doing the single dad thing, while also, completely obliviously, talking about Buck every second he gets. Oh and making sure to keep Buck in line. And looking out for Buck’s feelings, asking Marjan to follow him back already. And you know, taking Buck to see his parents.
Consistency in character development. We love to see it!

"It's nice. It's... easy being with her" is exactly the thing you'd say when you settle for something. Eddie doesn't say he loves her. He doesn't say that he cares about her, that she's what he needs, that she completes him. Fuck, he doesn't even say that he likes her.
It's easy.
Because dating cute, pretty and funny teacher of his son is, in fact, easy. It's nice, it goes smoothly and doesn't require much effort from him.
It's easy.
You know what would not be easy? Being with Buck. Because Buck is complicated. It's his best friend, his coworker, his support system.
It would be complicated.
Because they're both messed up.
Because they both think they don't deserve love anymore.
Because Buck hurt him and because he hurt Buck.
Because working together means one day he could watch him die and not be able to do anything.
Because if it didn't work out he would not only lose a partner but also a soulmate.
And Eddie knows he could not survive that. So easy it is.

Hello there! I'm totally new in this fandom. I binge-watched 911 in a week with my grandmother (we just finished season 4, we'll start the 5th soon) and we BOTH are roothing for Buddie!!! Even my 82 year old grandma do feel //something\\ between these two, but I'm aware they are so far a mere bromance. Sadly I already had some spoiler in my group chats, and as far as I now, in season 6 they don't have much screentime. So, basically, do you believe in an utopic Buddie endgame or am I delusional?
Hi lovely Nonnie! Aawwww, I adore that you're watching this with your grandmother! And I LOVE that she's rooting for Buddie as well! :D I hope you can give her a hug from me, too. Even if you don't tell her who it's from, if it's too awkward to explain...
Season 6 isn't over yet and I hope you also heard there's some good stuff coming your way to watch with your grandma! If you haven't been spoilered about 612 yet... careful. This post will. ;)
Do I personally think Buddie can be endgame? I believe 100000% they should be based on everything we've seen from 201 on. I'm also under the impression that the odds are VERY high for the show to actually follow through on all of the build up they've given us through the seasons. I mentioned this in my my 612 meta as well, they had to make some very deliberate choices to set up the recurring theme of the couch metaphor beginning in 513, and they've only made it louder and more explicit, so no one would miss it, in 601. That means that when they have Buck unable to fall asleep on his own couch, but he falls into a restful slumber right away on Eddie's, that's the kind of thing shows do deliberately. Why would they continuously make such choices and then not follow up on them? I can't see a reason, not at this point. They know exactly what they're doing. So I'm currently very, VERY optimistic.
Will I ever tell you that it's 100% guaranteed to happen? No. I don't make the show, and it would be irresponsible of me to make you such promises. But when I am so careful not to raise people's expectations in vain, so I hope you get how honest it is when I tell you I am VERY excited for what's to come. ;D
Thank you so much for this, hugs again to both of you! As always, here's my ask tag. xoxox

IT'S 3AM AND CALL ME A CLOWN BUT....
This is gonna be a little long but bear with me cause I have a point.
I believe this entire Eddieana and what happened this episode is heavily hinting that something big is coming...
This entire season we have had subtle Buddie moments AND also moments that hint that Buck and Eddie co-parent Christopher together and I'm gonna list it for you:
We start in 4x03 where Eddie and Buck have this 'good cop, bad cop' scene with Christopher and the video games where Buck tells Christopher no after a silent very mom/dad like pose which says 'Try and defy me' which is very common between married couples who co-parent (I've seen it with my parents a few times). We continue this episode with this cute little prank with the coffee maker that Buck and Chris play on Eddie (which was hilarious and really cute btw)
We move on to the crossover when Buck gets sad (and kind jealous when he finds out that Eddie is gonna work with Marjan instead of him
Later in the ep we have TK (an openly gay man) who thinks Buck is flirting with him AND OPENLY TELLS BUCK he has a boyfriend when Buck suggests they "get together" if TK's in LA sometime... AND on top of that when TK disappears of the frame who appears right after? Yup Eddie
We move on to 4x04 in which we have the scene with the 'Karen's murder' where we have Buck and Eddie playing detective together in a very cute way trying to discover the woman's killer. Then we have the punching bag scene in which after being angry for a while, a conversation with Eddie helps Buck with his anger.
We move on to Buck begins!!! Where in the factory fire JUST AS BUCK is about to give up, the 118 shows up to help him. Who is the first one there??? Eddie. Then we have the scene with Eddie waiting for buck's clean bill of health... And then the whole "Show off" scene which honestly?? EDDIE YOUR FONDNESS!!!
Now we get to the good stuff.... 4x06. JINX. My favorite episode! Where we have the clipboard scene with fond Eddie and the cutest moment with Buck and Eddie laughing in that whole helium scene but also it's the one where we get an incoming... Ana. Bobby tells Eddie this advice which resonates with me
"They're so focused on what they don't have, that they miss the chance to have something else. Something real" and tells Eddie to try and move on... But this line I believe it's more for us. Eddie will be SO focused on what he doesn't have (a 'mom' for Christopher) that he misses the chance to have something real. Something that is right in front of his face (Buck) and tries to find it on Ana (which is where our misery begins)
We have 4x07 where the focus of story arcs shifts to other characters and we don't get that much here BUT we get Buck trying to 'date' and failing miserably with Veronica.
In 4x08 is where the fun starts and co-pareting buddie starts to show... We have on one side Buck who is having issues with Albert and Veronica dating which leads to uncomfortable Buck in his own apartment. Our dear Taylor Kelly comes back but we see her relationship with Buck change to a really nice friendship. On the otherside we have Eddie who starts dating Ana and Christopher finds out which leads to his outburst to Eddie (which had never happened before) and then... HE RUNS AWAY. WHERE!? To Buck. To his other parent. The only other person who makes him feel safe (we get kind of like a divorced!buddie vibe here too). This beautiful scene between them shows us how Buck is Chris other parent AND ALSO that Buck and Taylor are truly becoming friends now. And then we get this really rushed scene where Edmundo (not eddie, Edmundo) introduces Christopher to Ana as if that's gonna make him feel better after the outburst he had and that made no sense at all to the point of the episode
In 4x09 we get a little bit of Buddie working together as the partners they are but the focus is on Chimney and Hen this ep so we just get breadcrums
In 4x10 we get the biggest hint so far... The episode is called PARENTHOOD! And it focuses on obviously the parents of the 118. Bathena and Michael, Henren and Madney. Who is the only parent who gets left out here?? Eddie... Why?? Because we all know that Chris has two parents and they don't want to acknowledge that just yet cause... Reasons. BUT we get nice hints. The few scenes in which we have Buck we get him talking about children at the same level as the rest of the 118. He acts and talks like he's already a parent. Why? Because he is!!!
We get this scene which is very subtle (BUT ALSO VERY NOTICEABLY) where we have the 'good cop, bad cop parents' and their kid. Chimney asks if both parents can be the 'good cop' AND BOTH BUCK AND EDDIE RESPOND NO! As if they know by first hand that a kid needs both, good and bad. This HEAVILY hints buddie co-parents or there's no point to this moment. In the same epsiode we get this AWFUL and very rushed scene with Buddieana and Chris in literally the last minute of the parenthood episode where Chris didn't even show up. The show portrays them as the 'adorable family who watches tv together' when they showed us JUST a few scenes ago the very noticeable buddie co-parenting scene. Why you say?? To remind us Eddie and Ana are still dating.
My point??? It's all on purpose. This is all hinting that something big might be coming. That's why we are getting so little scenes, why buddie is "pulling away". Also the fact that Ana is just here as Eddie's love interest and has literally no personality whatsoever is making me believe she's just being used as a background character. Even David (Michael's partner) has more personality than her and I think this is done on purpose. I believe something is gonna happen and this might all lead to Carla's appearance in an upcoming episode which could be the turning point of this storyline. Cocoa hinted that Carla will be coming back and she might be anti Ana (and possibly team buck). Will she knock some sense into Eddie? I really hope so
This took me an hour but it's here... Am I a clown? Yes. Am I reaching? Probably. But I had to get it out of my chest... Buddie is coming

there’s something about the way that they both reach for each other after eddie has been shot to try and close the distance between them physically and metaphorically. like they’re so close but not quite where they want to be which really just defines their relationship to a t. and i could honestly go on about this forever because hand symbolism just makes me wanna scream.

4x01 Buddie Analysis
When I first saw this scene (link starting at 2:52):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was something about it that immediately caught my eye. I found it immensely strange that the director framed this scene in particular to have Buck’s jacket so plainly in the background, especially with “Buckley” able to be read so clearly, as if almost intentionally placed pristinely within the setting. In the previous Eddie shots the jacket is not shown, instead they are personal, close-up shots. This shot on the other hand is a medium panning shot that frames Eddie as well as his surroundings.
As the camera pans and tilts, the jacket itself is not able to be seen until after Eddie asks the question about the bus’s occupancy, and “Buckley” can not clearly be read until after Bobby tells Eddie to go ahead with tilting the bus regardless. This alone displays how with each piece of dialogue Eddie is reminded a bit more of Buck and his safety. Furthermore, within the next few seconds, while other things are moving in and out of the foreground and background (including a whole person), both Eddie and the jacket stay within frame.
To me, the jacket seems very intentionally placed within the setting and intentionally kept within the frame. It serves as a reminder for us, the audience, of Buck altogether. It reminds us of the repelling maneuver Buck just performed, making him take off his jacket in the first place (in which him and Eddie were reliant on each other for Buck’s safety). It also reminds us of the dependence Buck and Eddie have on each other, with Buck not only literally (albeit just a jacket) undressing in front of Eddie, but he also decides to keep his things safely with Eddie instead of dropping them off on the floor of the accident earlier in the elevator, meaning Buck will have to come back to Eddie later in order to get his things. The jacket being placed behind Eddie is not meant to distract the audience from Eddie and what he is doing, instead it simply acts as a subtle reminder of Buck. In reminding the audience of Buck, it reflects a constant reminder that Eddie has of Buck in moments of danger. It affixes the two characters and displays how the thought of Buck is, quite literally, constantly connected with Eddie (even when we, the audience, can’t see it in the other shots -- a piece of Buck is still literally with Eddie).
When this scene is taken as a parallel with the other scene I analyzed (would recommend reading that post before continuing, but it is not necessary) from a few shots after this one, they have similar implications of Eddie’s care for Buck.
Both scenes have Eddie saying similar phrases involving the occupancy of the bus. In this one Eddie says, “Is everyone of the bus?” and the other shot he says, “Hey, Buck is everyone off that thing?” Both of these questions are Eddie’s response to a dangerous situation within the bus, something that he deems as dangerous enough for an evacuation, and both are him asking about the occupancy (as provided within the other analysis, he is subtly asking whether or not Buck is on the bus). While the later scene shows Eddie’s direct urgency towards Buck’s safety, this scene, within it’s framing, displays a subconscious reminder that Buck, and his safety, are on always on Eddie’s mind, just like the tutnout jacket puts Buck within our minds.
Though this scene has Eddie within the forefront and on frame, there is still some of Buck within the shot. On the other hand, the other scene is a shot that has Buck in the forefront, with Eddie’s voice speaking to Buck within the shot. This juxtaposition of framing and focus shows their interconnectedness even more. Both characters are infiltrating a shot of the other in different ways, furthering the idea that they are always with each other in dangerous situations, infiltrating the others mind and senses. Whether its being on the others mind, taking guidance from the other, or just being partners, these two shots display a connection between the two that is unique and intense.
I know it may seem like a stretch, but when considering the rest of the parallels between these two scenes, I can not just write this off as an accidental perfect placement and framing of the turnout coat. Following the warning for bus evacuation, Eddie immediately shows a moment of subordination and doubt in both scenes. This scene Eddie is having to put his trust in Bobby, for both relying on this maneuver to work out, and also making sure everyone is safe while Eddie is tilts the bus back.  In the other scene he shows doubt in his own instincts when he says “I think it’s venting fuel;” displaying Eddie’s unsureness of his instincts and also his lack of knowledge of the circumstance while he is on the roof. These two scenes are also directly putting Bobby within harms way, both without Eddie’s knowledge, and yet both instances are relying on Eddie in some way (either through providing information or performing the maneuver himself). The final parallel is Buck himself, apart from the jacket and the framing. After both scenes involving Eddie (both of which incorporate Buck with Eddie already), Buck is seen running back into a dangerous space in order to check on Bobby.
I’m sure there are other parallels between these two scenes that I am missing, and maybe there are criticisms that I am not acknowledging, but I knew the first time I watched 4x01 that something about this scene seemed interesting to me and it took me a while to figure it out. It was not until I compared these two scenes together was I able to formulate a thought that I think not only establishes itself well, but is also able to support the pervious analysis quite well. Feel free to share your comments about this!
