IOTA Reviews: Illusion

You know, It's really sad how this is a Lila episode, and she somehow isn't the most annoying character to come out of it.

Let's get into the fifth episode of Miraculous Ladybug's fifth season: Illusion

We start off with a news broadcast where several people are interviewed about the recent developments this season. There's an attempt made to show differing perspectives, but while half are recurring characters who are confident Ladybug and Cat Noir will beat Monarch (Xavier, Mr. Damocles, and Alec), the other half are antagonistic characters who either blame Ladybug for everything going wrong or are too stupid to care about the bigger picture (XY, Chloe, and Bob Roth).

This is one of the overarching problems with the show, its refusal to show any nuance in its arguments. We already know how easy it is for the writers to blame Marinette for things whenever there's a conflict, but whenever there's an argument where both sides make interesting points, the opposing side is almost always represented by an antagonist or jerk who frames their view in either a condescending or idiotic way so it's easy for the viewer to brush them off, and the same can be applied to their side of the argument as well. Hell, it's already happened twice this season with Lila and Chloe (Multiplication, Determination). It just comes across like the show is pretending to act like its conflict is deeper without actually showing any real nuance with it. I get that some arguments aren't morally gray, but if you're trying to discuss Ladybug's past failures, put more effort into showing how the people of Paris would see something like this without knowing the full context.

Also, this is a minor thing, but I actually like how when we see Alec on the talk show, he's wearing a wig like the one he had in “Wishmaker”, and has the same positive outlook on life he had at the end of that episode. For a show that usually plays loosey-goosey with its continuity, it's surprising to see the writers actually acknowledge the character growth of someone as insignificant as Alec.

Congratulations, Miraculous Ladybug. You managed to give a very minor side character a consistent arc. Now if only you could put the same amount of effort into writing your main cast.

We cut to Adrien's room where, shock of all shocks, he isn't exactly a fan of his image being used for a high-tech ring without his consent. He storms off to see his father, but it turns out that Gabriel is experimenting with the idea of not being such a terrible father for once. He's making breakfast, saying that Adrien can call him “Dad” now, and even admits that he's been very neglectful towards his son ever since Emilie “disappeared”. Yeah, he's cooking breakfast in his white suit and haircut that makes him look like a grandpa for some reason, but hey, at least the kitchen isn't on fire.

Of course, Gabriel still isn't really good at comforting his son, as seen with his response to Adrien's concerns about Alliance.

Adrien: Speaking of which, Dad, I'm not really comfortable with having my face on all these rings. That's actually why I didn't want to be a model anymore, to avoid that. Do you understand?

Gabriel: Of course, I understand, my son. But that's the point; it's just an image, it's not you! And since this image frees you from your obligations, we, the Agrestes, are able to spend more time together. But if you'd rather everything went back to the way it was before, just say the word.

Adrien: You're probably right.

Gabriel: You'll see, my son. Alliance will bring us closer.

“I know you're concerned about me using your image for something that I could have hired literally anyone else for, but if you would rather go back to being a model on a strict schedule, just say the word.”

Father of the year, ladies and gentlemen.

We get a decent interaction between Marinette and Alya where they discuss ways that Monarch could be giving Miraculous to his Akumas, unaware of what the Alliance rings do. Alya comes up with an interesting hypothesis that Monarch is using the Dog Miraculous to swipe them back, and honestly, that sounds like a much better plan than “develop a cutting-edge AI ring and hope whoever I akumatize had enough money to buy one”. I like this bit, as it shows the two thinking of ways to stop Monarch beyond beating whatever Akuma he sends out next. It honestly could have been a really interesting story arc to see Marinette, Cat Noir, and Alya learn more about how Monarch is using the new Miraculous he got instead of having us know what he's doing already.

After class ends, Nino talks to Adrien about an underground resistance he's forming with his friends, deciding to give each member a condiment-themed title.

Alya: What's up with the sauces?

Nino: What's up is Ladybug and Cat Noir don't have us to help them anymore.

Alya: (nervously) Um... uh... what do you mean, “us”?

Nino: Well, us, you Rena Rouge, me Carapace! (Alya kicks Nino's leg underneath the table) Ouch! What's the big deal? We can tell Marinette and Adrien we used to be superheroes. It's not like we have any Miraculous that Monarch could steal from us. The only ones who need to protect their secret identities are Ladybug and Cat Noir, not us. And anyway, I already told Adrien about Carapace.

Adrien: (chuckles nervously)

Marinette: Adrien knew?! Alya, did you know that he knew?!

Alya: What, no, I swear I didn't know at all! (kicks Nino's leg again)

Nino: Ow! Come on! He's my best bud, I can tell him stuff! You and Marinette tell each other stuff, don't you?

Alya and Marinette: No we don't!

Yeah, remember how shocking it was for Nino to reveal that he and Alya were Rena Rouge and Carapace to Adrien in “Rocketear”, and how we thought this reveal would play into something big like the Season 4 finale, possibly splintering the trust several characters had with each other? This is what it culminates in. Wasn't waiting over a year since that plotpoint was established totally worth it for that gag that once again ignores the secret identity rule?

Also, just because you don't have a Miraculous, it doesn't mean Monarch can't target you like he did last season (Optigami, Sentibubbler), you dumbass.

For the first time in God knows how long, Lila actually becomes relevant when she asks to sit with the four, only to be rebuffed by Marinette and Nino. Using some more condiments and food as props, Nino explains his plan.

Nino: We're gonna film an akumatization.

Alya: And how are you, Comrade Ketchup, gonna be in the know when and where this akumatization takes place?

Nino: Easy, Comrade Beurre Maître d'Hôtel. I'm gonna make it happen.

Yep, this is the plot of the episode, people. Nino's going to try and get someone akumatized. Now I know what you're all obviously thinking: Isn't this cruel?

Adrien: Isn't that cruel?

Alya: Totally! To make someone suffer just to discover Monarch's technique? Super cruel!

Nino: No, it's not! You forget Ladybug always fixes everything in the end with her magic ladybugs! The akumatized victims forget what happened to them.

Oh yeah, this is totally ethical, you guys. Who cares about the emotional trauma an Akuma victim would go through, much less any civilians endangered by their rampage?

To make things even better, guess who Nino wants to get akumatized?

Okay, putting aside what we, the audience, already know about Gabriel that Nino doesn't, why would he think pissing off one of the most influential fashion designers in the city of Paris is a good idea? He says he's targeting him because it's easy to do so during parent-teacher conferences, but why not target someone else who has been akumatized more often than him, like Xavier/Mr. Pigeon? I don't think the idea of a more morally gray plan to stop Monarch is a bad one, it's just that this plan is so stupid, and the writers only go over the ethical implications, and that said plan is so ludicrous, Nino is basically asking for a restraining order.

While Adrien and Marinette agree to Nino's plan, Alya only hesitantly goes along with it, but unbeknownst to any of them, Lila was overhearing their conversation, so she goes to tell Gabriel what they're doing. During the conferences, Marinette barges in and pretends to trip and drop some pizza onto Gabriel's clothes, and I'm going to assume that either the pizza was cold of Gabriel is really good at keeping a cool head because there's no way taking a hot pizza to the chest wouldn't hurt like hell. Adrien and Alya come in with more food, and we get the one funny joke of the episode with Alya half-assing her performance as the half-heartedly throws some cake onto Gabriel's suit. Pretty funny how Nino is conveniently the only one who isn't taking the risk by attacking Gabriel in front of his teacher by filming the whole thing, isn't it?

Gabriel has had enough and does a 180, planning to take Adrien out of school and somehow, Marinette blames herself for going along with the plan... even though she was the only one to not approve of it, while Adrien and Alya did, and even then, the latter two were very hesitant. It turns out this was all part of Gabriel's plan, as we see him transform into Monarch as soon as he gets to his lair and uses Trixx's power to create a Mirage of his civilian form, having a breakdown so dramatic, I'm surprised he didn't end it by saying, “YOU ARE TEARING ME APART, MARINETTE!”.

The illusion of Gabriel turns into the Collector again, and now he supposedly has the Horse Miraculous' Voyage as a power. Adrien and Marinette transform into Cat Noir and Ladybug respectively, and try to fend off the “Akuma”. Back in Monarch's lair, we learn that he somehow has the ability to unify with five different Miraculous at once, choosing to do so with the Bee, Mouse, Horse, and Rooster Miraculous. Why is he able to do this now?

Monarch uses Voyage and heads to the sewers, activating Venom before using Multiplication to create eight smaller clones of himself, finally using Sublimination to give the copies the power of invisibility. Strange, wouldn't wanting to be invisible count as a wish? While looking for “the Collector”, Ladybug uses her Lucky Charm, getting a bag of shredded cheese. The two chase after the illusion, only to fall through a Voyage portal into the sewers, where Cat Noir is almost immediately stunned by one of the clones. Hey, it took five whole episodes this season for him to be incapacitated by an Akuma to pointlessly raise the stakes this time! It's a new record! Ladybug throws the cheese to reveal the clones, who are then chased off by some nearby rats.

Monarch goes back to his normal form, and after a small pep talk, the illusion pretends to reject the Akuma entirely before falling into the water. The real Gabriel detransforms and then pretends to have gotten out. So Gabriel tricked the heroes with his foolproof plan... except for the fact that Ladybug and Cat Noir should have recognized the use of Venom, the hidden clones of the Collector when the video Nino got only said he had the Horse Miraculous' power, the akuma somehow purifying itself when Ladybug still needed to de-evilize it in “Rocketear” and “Penalteam”, the fact that Gabriel should be soaking wet from falling into the water, and the—okay, you all know where this is going.

Meanwhile, Nino sees the footage of the illusion and sees what he believes to be the way Monarch gave the Collector the Horse Miraculous' powers. Nino then apologizes to Gabriel for attacking him, Gabriel forgives him, and Nino invites him into the Resistance, with a bunch of new members. The final scene reveals that in addition to Nino, Alya, Marinette, Adrien, and Gabriel, the Resistance now has Max, Kim, Rose, Juleka, Ivan, Mylene, and to Marinette's horror, Lila. Also, there's a post-credits scene where Gabriel explains what he did to Tomoe when literally everyone watching was able to figure it out.

Okay, so let's summarize. The first mission for Nino's resistance involved assaulting a private civilian, was easily discovered before it could even be implemented, was just as easily foiled by an illusion, now Monarch and one of his allies have infiltrated the alliance as moles, and Nino isn't even aware that his plan was a colossal failure. This resistance isn't exactly going to be like the Rebel Alliance, is it?

Yeah, this episode sucked. It's easily the worst one so far in my opinion. There were a handful of decent moments and ideas here, but my God, the story was just terrible. Morally gray subject or not, it's hard to get behind the heroes when they try to intentionally piss someone off for a plan that the audience knows is going to fail, especially a plan as stupid as Nino's. This episode features Nino at his most obnoxious and unlike Alya, Marinette, and especially Adrien, he doesn't even feel bad for what he did to Gabriel when it ended up being (as far as we know) completely pointless. It feels like the writers wanted to gloss over the ethics of Nino's plan by making Gabriel the victim, because if it was anyone else, it would have made him look like a colossal prick. The fact that he learns nothing and thinks his moronic scheme was a success really doesn't help.

The other characters thankfully weren't as bad. It seemed like the writers were trying to show some self-awareness by having Alya, Marinette, and Adrien object to the plan in one way or another, but it never really went much other than them begrudgingly going along with it, much less calling him out for his actions. At the same time, they all got some decent moments, like Alya and Marinette's discussion about Monarch and Adrien struggling to convey his feelings about the Alliance rings to Gabriel.

It's also kind of weird that it took us about five episode into the season for Lila to finally be relevant again after she did absolutely nothing for the last three episodes of Season 4 and the first four episodes of this season. It was only three and a half years since “Ladybug”, the last major Lila episode premiered, right? But hey, at least the writers didn't overindulge in the dumb Lila lies like her other episodes, and was used more as an informant to kick off Gabriel's counter to Nino's plan.

Putting aside how terrible Nino's plan was, Gabriel's plan still had a lot of problems to it. Like I already mentioned, it's a little strange that Ladybug and Cat Noir never talk about the tiny clones they fought, or the fact that Cat Noir was stung by Venom. I can kind of suspend my disbelief by saying Ladybug was too focused on the battle to think, but why the hell didn't Cat Noir say anything? You would think after working alongside Queen Bee and Vesperia, he would recognize what being stung by Venom must look like. Yeah, Ladybug and Cat Noir didn't know Monarch can now use more powers for some reason, but it still really bothers me, because they should know the Collector can't multiply himself. It's also strange that he made his trick so hard to find when you would think it would be more obvious to see

But overall, this one was just a chore to get through. It feels like the writers saw how much some people didn't like Nino in “Rocketear”, and were like, “You call THAT character assassination?” And speaking of...

THE BIGGEST IDIOT OF THE EPISODE IS... NINO

Was there ever any doubt? The dude talked about his identity in a public place, nonchalantly blew him and his girlfriend's cover when he had no reason to for his Resistance, tried to get his best friend's dad akumatized while not caring about any potential damage, showed no remorse for what he did when his plan blew up in his face, tried to tell Ladybug and Cat Noir about what he learned while they were fighting the Collector, and all that was for a plan that didn't even work because the intel was discovered with ease, to say nothing about how he unintentionally let two enemies into his own Resistance. I've seen a lot of stupid decisions in this show, but never have I seen a single episode where a character makes screw-up after screw-up and doesn't even realize how much of a colossal moron he's being. With the past five episodes I covered and awarded Biggest Idiot Awards to (Ladybug, Alya, Xuppu, Mr. Damocles, and Luka), it was more them not seeing the bigger picture. Here, Nino is honestly trying to help Ladybug and Cat Noir, yet he failed at his job in every way.

(Lila, XY, and Felix are sitting at their usual spot in the cafeteria.)

Lila: And so by the time I realized I had picked the wrong answer for Question 4, it was too late! There’s no way I’ll be getting an A+...

(Felix rolls his eyes before sarcastically patting her on the back.)

Felix: Oh dear, you poor soul. You’ll only be getting an A instead of an A+, how unfortunate.

(Mylene’s tentacles tapped him on the back, as the sea witch barged into their conversation.)

Mylene:

Poor unfortunate souls! In pain, in need.

Some are wanting to be smarter, others want to get a date

XY: Is Mylene singing?

Mylene:

Yes, indeed!

(Felix was going through the usual routine of being tormented by his cousin. Adrien had transformed into a snake once again, and was strangling Felix. The boy tried desperately to reach for his vial of pixie dust, but was unable to.)

Adrien:

You try to escape with your pixie stuff

But your attempts aren’t up to snuff

I’ll set the record straight, you’re simply out of date

You’re only second rate!

(Adrien laughed maniacally before being bonked in the head by Jess, and was forced to transform back into his normal form.)

(Alya was talking to Lacey about daggers.)

Lacey: You should cover the tip of your blade with poison, so even if they run away, you’ve still mortally wounded them.

Alya: Well, when it comes to knives, you’d certainly know best.

Lacey:

Don’t be spacey, trust in Lacey...

Lacey... knows best.

(Lacey chuckled as she grabbed the edges of her cloak, swirling around and vanishing in an instant.)

Alya: Ah... so that’s how Nino feels...

And there’s Part 2 of Villain Songs. @artzychic27 and @msweebyness. Adrien’s song comes from the Aladdin DVD sequel, and it’s basically an evil version of “Friend Like Me”. I also changed the lyrics of these songs to fit the characters better. Crazy conspiracy Rich kid Senti-Theory:

I know I posted about it before but I cannot find the original one now, so here we go anyways.

Like the others, Adrien is able to be manipulated via the relevant jewelry.

However, from the letter of his name, he was the first. It is highly possible that he isn’t alone, since we know Felix is for sure. Notably, Chloé, Felix, Kagami, and Xavier-Yves were also at his father’s weird party.

After all we saw in Season 4, Tomoe’s walking stick, Audrey’s necklace, and Bob Roth’s necklace or ring are all looking a little suspect right now.

It also might explain why Andre struggles to do more than coddle to get Chloé to behave...

Now, I can’t help but notice how many letters from the alphabet are missing from the list there. There were a bunch of other adults at Gabriel’s secret backroom masquerade.

What is five Senti children is actually the lowest possible estimate?

I have recently been inspired to give Emilie Agreste a bit of tragedy in her past in my Stammering Adrien AU. I thought about how she might have had one or two bad experiences in her acting career. Then I thought about Bob Roth, who clearly isn’t a nice guy. And I thought “how far should I take this idea?” I don’t want to step on any toes or over any boundaries, but I also want to take another shot at a serious subject. But I will let you decide.

ML: Isolation Chapter 40: Unraveling

On Thursday. Nino was getting ready for work when there was a knock at the door. The manager, a portly man with a blonde buzz cut and a tuxedo, walked over to open it. Nino tailed him, curious as to what was going on. When he answered the door, he saw Nathalie. Nino saw this as well, and was confused. The manager, ever the professional, said “I’m sorry ma’am, but the club isn’t quite open yet.”

“I’m not here to dance,” Nathalie said. She pulled out a business card. “I am here on behalf of Gabriel Agreste, and his business Gabriel. We are currently looking into many different music venues and clubs for an upcoming project, and we want to see if your venue is fit for purpose.”

“Oh, of course,” the manager said. He took out his business card and exchanged it with Nathalie’s.

“Just so you are aware,” Nathalie began, “our priority as a business is the safety of our models. We are very particular and very thorough. If we find something that even remotely puts our models at risk, we will not follow through on this.”

“Of course,” the manager said. “I understand completely. A business has to sell itself after all.”

Nathalie smiled. “I’m glad you understand. I shall be in touch with you shortly.” Nathalie walked away. The manager went back to his office as well.

Nino went back to his station, but took out his phone and messaged Adrien.”Did you send your dad’s assistant here?”

Adrien messaged back. “She stopped by? I heard that the company might be looking into music stuff, but I don’t know much about it.”

“You sure you didn’t ask her to?”

“Do you really think I have that much sway in my father’s company? I wasn’t allowed to leave the house until recently.”

“Hmmm. I guess that makes sense. Sorry.”

“It’s all good Nino. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to prepare for tomorrow. Prince Ali is coming, and I need to look my best.”

“Hm. Lucky.”

“I’d invite you, but it’s not up to me who comes. I mean, Prince Ali is the Crown Prince of Achu. They can’t just let anyone in.”

“I guess that’s fair. But we’re in France! We kicked out the royals!”

“True, but France can’t tell Achu what to do.”

“I know, I know. I’m just messin with you.”

“Take care Nino.”

“Take care,” Nino shot back.

Adrien then began messaging the group chat.

Adrien: Is everyone ready for tomorrow?

Kagami: I think so.

Chloe: Yeah.

Markov: I should be.

Adrien: Great!

Alya: Actually. I’m wondering something.

Adrien: What is it?

Alya: Well, I now have an inside scoop. But I still have to pretend like I don’t.

Alya: So, how long should I take before arriving at the record store to try and document everything?

Marinette: I don’t think that’s much of an issue.

Marinette: You usually have your ear to the pavement a lot anyway. I don’t think anyone would be surprised to see you showing up fairly soon after.

Alya: Hey!

Marinette: Sorry.

Alya: Well…I mean…it’s true…but you didn’t have to say it…

Adren: Well, I think it’ll be beneficial.

Adrien: I mean, if you’re tackling the big Cat Noir story of the day, Lila can’t suspect you of doing anything unsavory to her.

Alya: Well, when you put it like that…

Adrien: We should get some rest. We’ve got a big day ahead of us tomorrow.

He plugged his phone in and went to bed.

The next day, as school ended, Adrien turned to Lila and said “So, are you ready for Prince Ali’s visit?”

“Well, almost,” Lila answered. “I have to go back home and change.”

“Me too, actually,” Adrien said.

They saw Rose walking out. “Oh, Rose, I’m sorry I couldn’t do anything this time.”

“It’s OK. Thank you though!” Rose answered.

Lila was confused. “Something wrong?” Adrien asked.

“Oh, uh, well, she’s usually a little more down about this,” Lila answered. “I’m…amazed that she’s holding up.”

“Well, maybe Cat Noir has something in the works,” Adrien countered. “Or maybe she’s used to it. Or something else happened, you know?”

“Right,” Lila said.

“Well, we should get going,” Adrien said. “We don’t want to be late.”

“Right,” Lila said. “Say, how about your family comes and picks up me and my mom, and we can arrive together?”

Adrien smiled nervously. “While that sounds fun, it may give off the impression that we’re dating, and we aren’t. But we can certainly hang out once we get there.”

“Oh. I see,” Lila said. “Well, I’m looking forward to it.” Lila left.

Adrien left soon after thinking That oughta rile her up enough to not follow up with Rose for a bit.

Meanwhile, Chloe and Kagami were on their way to the Mr. XY event. Kagami saw that Chloe was nervous. “You alright?” Kagami asked.

“Well…” Chloe replied. “I don’t know. I’ve always like Mr. XY. I didn’t think he’d be a terrible person.”

Kagami grew determined. “Sometimes the people you admire most turn out awful. The best we can do is accept the truth and move on.”

Chloe grew a little concerned. “Sounds like you’re speaking from experience.”

“My father,” Kagami said.

“Oh,” Chloe responded.

“He cheated on my mom,” Kagami said. “And it only gets worse from there.”

“I see,” Chloe said, nervously. “Yikes.”

“Hm. Tell me about it,” Kagami replied.

“Well, I guess in a weird way, that made me feel a little better,” Chloe said.

“I’m not surprised,” Kagami said. “There’s a bit of wisdom my mom imparted on me. I’m not sure where she got it from, but I think it holds true. ‘Sometimes to help someone, you need to have been helped first.’”

“Woah,” Chloe said. “You know, come to think of it, that’s kind of Adrien’s whole deal right? I mean, he was helped by being allowed to go to school, and now he’s doing all of this for Marinette.”

Kagami chuckled. “I guess you’re right.” They looked around. “We’re almost there. I’m gonna go change. You ready?”

“Yeah!” Chloe said, determined. Kagami snuck away to become Cat Noir.

Back at school, Max was talking to Kim about something. This gave Markov the opportunity he needed to begin his excursion. He slid out of Max’s backpack and appeared between the two boys. “Um, hi. There’s something I have to do quick. Are you going to be here for a bit, or should I call you or something?”

“Uh, no, I’ll still be here,” Max answered. “What’s this about?”

“Well, it’s part of what we discussed on Tuesday,” Markov said.

“Oh. Right. Gotcha,” Max said. Markov nodded and floated off.

“What is that about?” Kim asked.

“Oh, well…” Max said, a bit nervous. “Markov just has a secret mission.”

“Oh! Cool!” Kim said. “Say, do you think he needs help?”

“What do you mean?” Max asked.

“Well, we could continue talking,” Kim said, “but I promised Ondine to take her out tonight. So I could leave early and you can help out Markov.”

Well, working with Cat Noir must be some serious stuff, Max thought. Perhaps he could use some assistance. “Alright. I’ll take you up on that.”

“Great. Thanks. Seeya!” Kim said. He rushed off.

Max waved goodbye. “Now then, where did Markov go?” He walked the direction Markov went.

Markov was in the locker room. He was looking around for the alcove where Alya hid her camera. “Ah HA! Found it!” He propelled over there. He picked the lock expertly and got in. It was a tight fit for him, but he managed to squeeze through.

Once he was in the wall, he did a quick scan of the area. Sure enough, Alya’s camera was right below where he popped out. “I see.” He went down to grab it. He struggled a bit with it, but he could lift it. He looked at his escape. “Well, I can’t push it through first. Otherwise, it’ll fall again.”

He began fitting himself through the hole again. But just as he was about to reach the end, Max popped out in front of him. “Hey Markov.”

“GAH!” Markov said, frightened. “What are you doing here?”

“Well, Kim had to leave,” Max said. “So I thought I’d help out.”

“I see,” Markov said. “Well, I could use some help.”

“Perfect,” Max said.

“Hold on,” Markov said. He backed up, putting him on the other side of the wall. He then placed the camera up on the perch.

“What is this?” Max asked.

“It’s one of Alya’s cameras,” Markov explained. “She lost it a little while ago, and asked Cat Noir to get it back.”

“Oh. I see,” Max said. Max took the camera and Markov shuffled out. “So, should we take this to Alya?”

“Um, I’m not sure if she’s here,” Markov said, trying not to give everything away.

“Hmmm. And I know I saw Adrien leaving too…” Max pondered. “Well, I have an idea.”

“Oh?” Markov wondered.

“Well, before everything, Marinette and Aya hung out a lot,” Max began. “She might have a charger for this. I bet Alya would want it fully charged. She can be a little impatient.”

“I see,” Markov said. “But, I thought you didn’t trust Marinette.”

“Well, I trust you,” Max said. “And you trust her.”

“Max…” Markov said.

Max smiled. “We should get going.” He started walking off.

Markov called out “Wait!” Max paused. “Um, can you lock the door again?”

“Oh, sure,” Max said. He locked the compartment, and then the two of them were off.

When they walked into the bakery, Sabine and Tom were surprised. “Uh, hi,” Max said, nervously.

“Hello,” Tom said.

“How may we help you?” Sabine asked.

“Well…” Max said.

“We’re on a mission from Cat Noir!” Markov informed them.

“Oh!” Sabine said, surprised.

“We need to drop this off,” Max said, holding the camera.

“Cat Noir will come for it at a different time,” Markov explained. “I’m sure we can trust you?”

“Of course dear,” Sabine said, taking the camera.

“Thank you,” Markov said.

“Um,” Max interjected. “It’s been a while, but I know you used to have these really good cinnamon rolls…”

Sabine smiled. “Of course dearie. Honey!”

“On it!” Tom said. He prepared some cinnamon rolls.

He handed them to Sabine, who handed them to Max. “ Here you go.”

Max paid them. “Thanks. Have a nice day.”

“You too!” Sabine said.

Ma and Markov left the shop. “I have to say, that went pretty well,” Max remarked.

“My thoughts exactly.”

Max took out a cinnamon roll and bit into it. His face lit up. “MMMMMM! They taste even better than I remember! I’d offer you one, but you can’t eat.”

“It’s fine,” Markov said. “Besides, I’m doing something that’ll be just as sweet.”

“What’s that?” Max asked.

“Informing Cat Noir about what happened,” Markov said. “And sent!”

“Heh. You’re pretty good at this,” Max said. “Come on. Let’s go home.” The pair headed off.

At the gathering for Prince Ali, Adrien got a message. He checked his phone, and it was Markov’s confirmation that the camera got to Marinette’s without incident. He smiled. “One down.”

“ADRIEN!” Lila called out. Arien put his phone back in his pocket. He looked up to see Lila in a blue dress. She walked over to him. “So, what do you think?”

“It looks amazing,” Adrien said.

Lila giggled. “Thanks. It’s a Ladybug original, you know.”

“Oh, I know,” Adrien said. “She works for my father’s company after all.”

Lila chuckled again. “Right. So, are you excited?”

“Oh, totally,” Adrien said. “I always love it when Prince Ali comes to visit.”

“Well then, shall we see if the prince is available?” Lila asked.

“Sure,” Adrien said. The two wandered off in search of Prince Ali.

Meanwhile, Kagami in her Cat Noir gear was just outside the record store. She took a deep breath and walked in. Everyone was surprised by Cat Noir showing up. However, no one was more surprised than Luka, who was working behind the counter, and who had left a request on Noir Notes not too long ago.

Mr. XY wasn’t there yet, but a table had been set up, and a cardboard cutout of him was placed next to it. Kagami grabbed one of the markers off of the table. Everyone was curious to see what Cat Noir would do. She took the cap off, and wrote “THIEF” in big, bold letters on the standee of Mr. XY. There was some level of confusion and shock among the patrons. Luka was more stunned than anyone else, as he did not expect his request to be read by Cat Noir, let alone acted on.

“HEY!” called a whiny voice. Everyone gasped. Kagami turned around to see the real Mr. XY. “What is this slander?”

Kagami smirked. “Forgive me, but how is this slander?”

“How am I a thief?” Mr. XY asked.

“Oh, that,” Kagami said. “Well, I got a request on Noir Notes that said you stole someone’s music.”

The crowd was aghast. “Hm,” Mr. XY scoffed. “And you believe them?”

“I also have a different source that also says you steal music from others,” Kagami informed him.

The crowd started to murmur. “Well, you can’t prove anything. So even if this WAS true, which it’s NOT, there’s nothing you can do.”

“Maybe in a court of law,” Kagami retorted. “But right now, we are in the court of public opinion. So really, it’s my word against yours.” Mr. XY was growing furious. “So then, who do you think the people will believe?”

The crowd was muttering among itself, wondering if any of what Cat Noir was saying was true. Some of them believed it right away, while others believed Mr. XY, and even more were in the middle of processing it. Which was the point. Cat Noir wasn’t here to prove anything beyond a shadow of a doubt, but rather stir the pot. And Mr. XY knew it.

Mr. XY took a deep breath to calm down. “Well, I can assure you this is not true.” He grabbed a marker for signing, and one of his albums. He proceeded to sign it. “And as a show of good will, you can be the first to get an autographed copy of my new album.” He handed it to her.

Kagami took the signed album and snapped it in half. Everyone was shocked. “Sorry. But I don’t accept gifts from thieves.”

Mr. XY was furious. “WHY YOU!” He raised his fist. Kagami was ready to block it. However, before Mr. XY’s punch could land, Luka had rushed over to grab his arm. “What the?” Mr. XY tried to break free. “Let me go!” Luka glared at him. He let go. There was a bit of red around the place Luka grabbed him. Mr. XY rubbed his wounds. “I’m gonna sue you for injuring me!”

“Realy?” Luka said. “I was just defending Cat Noir. Everyone here saw you about to punch him.” Mr. XY looked around. There certainly was a big crowd.”They had their phones out too,” Luka went on. “Pictures, and video. Anyone can clearly see what had happened.”

“Well Cat Noir is a liar!” Mr. XY called out.

“Even if that’s true, that doesn’t mean anything,” Luka said. “You tried to punch him.” The crowd was slowly turning on Mr. XY. “And by the way, it’s not true. After all, you stole my music.” The crowd was aghast.

“Prove it!” Mr. XY barked.

“Do you really want me too?” Luka asked. “Because every time I tried to before, you simply brushed me off.” Mr. XY was worried now.

“I think everyone is starting to see you for who you really are,” Kagami said. “And as much as I’d love to stay and watch you implode, my job here is done. Gotta go!” Kagami rushed out of the store. Mr. XY started crying out loud. Everyone there started taking more pictures and video of Mr. XY, now a sobbing mess. This gave Chloe the opportunity to sneak out as well. Meanwhile, Luka looked down at the floor and noticed something. He went to pick it up.

One Chloe met up with a non-Cat Noir Kagami, she said “That sure was something.”

“Indeed,” Kagami said. “We should get going.” The two went home to change and head to the Prince Ali event.

A few minutes later, at the party, Prince Ali stood up from his chair saying “CAT NOIR!” Everyone looked at him. He was holding his phone. “He just appeared!” He turned to his handler. “Can we go?”

“I’m afraid not,” said his chaperone.

“But I really want to see Cat Noir!” Prince Ali begged.

“Even if you went, you wouldn’t be able to see him,” his supervisor said. “The reports say he left already.”

“Aw,” Prince Ali sighed. He smiled. “Still, to have Cat Noir do something while I’m in Paris. It feels like a dream.” He turned to address the crowd. “I hope you all here embody Cat Noir’s spirit. He helps out those in need, and I humbly ask you all to do the same here today.” Everyone was clapping for him.

Once it stopped, Lila asked Adrien “What do you think happened?”

“I don’t know,” Adrien replied. “Let’s check Noir Notes.”

They looked and saw what was happening with Mr. XY. Alya had arrived on the scene shortly after and began chronicling everything, and compiling video and images of what went down. “Mr. XY? A thief?” Lila wondered. “Certainly, that can’t be true.”

“Well, I’m sad to say it is,” Adrien said. Lila looked at him, confused. “My father’s company found out about this. But we couldn’t do anything except tell people behind closed doors.”

“Oh. I see,” Lila said. “Well, it’s a shame, I guess.”

“Maybe,” Adrien said. “But I’m glad we have people like Prince Ali and Cat Noir to look up to.”

Lila smiled. “You’re right. Well then, shall we continue having fun here?”

“Of course,” Adrien said. The two went off to hang out throughout the party. Meanwhile, Chloe and Kagami had shown up dressed to the nines and ready to have fun as well. The party went off without a hitch, as did the plan of the Cat Noir coalition.

Later that night, there was a knock on the door of the hotel room Prince Ali was staying in. His chaperone answered it to see Adrien as Cat Noir there. “Cat Noir?!”

“I hear the Prince is a big fan,” Adrien said.

“WHO IS IT?!” Prince Ali yelled. Before he could get an answer, he rushed over and saw Cat Noir. “CAT NOIR!”

“Uh, hi,” Adrien said.

Prince Ali was in shock. “Well come in, come in.”

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” his supervisor said.

“It’s Cat Noir: Hero of Paris!” Prince Ali argued.

“Still, we don’t know who he is!” his chaperone protested.

“Well…” Adrien interjected. “Can you keep a secret?”

“Of course,” Prince Ali answered.

Adrien smiled. He took out his phone and turned off his voice modulator. “This isn’t the first time we’ve met.”

Prince Ali gasped. “A-” Adrien signaled him to keep it down. Prince Ali hugged Adrien. “I don’t believe it.” He looked at his guardian.

“Fine,” she said. Adrien came in, and the two were sat down to have some tea and cookies.

As they were eating, Prince Ali said “So, you’re Cat Noir?” Adrien nodded. “But wait, weren't you at my party today? How could you be there and helping someone?”

“Well, truth be told,” Adrien began, “this whole Cat Noir thing has grown bigger than just myself. But make no mistake, I am the originator.”

“I see, I see,” Prince Ali. “So, may I ask why?”

“Well it’s complicated,” Adrien said. “But basically, you know how you said you’d do anything for your fiance?”

“Ah, I getcha,” Prince Ali said. “So, you found yourself someone like that?”

“Well, it took me a bit to realize it, but yeah,” Adrien answered.

“Well, I wish nothing but happiness for the both of you,” Prince Ali said.

“The same goes for you and your fiance,” Adrien said. They clinked their tea cups and finished eating. Once they were done, Adrien headed back home for the night.

The main reason I usually default to lesbian Chloe is because her interest in guys often seems extremely artificial and performative.

Its like if a guy performs traditional masculinity so intently that it ends up coming off as insincere. The same sort of thing tends to apply to Chloe with my reads.

Especially because her rather awkward, both too extreme, and yet very at a distance 'flirting' attempts on guys can be contrasted against her much more affectionate manner with Ladybug. Which seems to lack the same sort of language, both verbal and body, that comes out with guys.

Plus there's the fact she only ever seems to express an aesthetic appreciation (Luka), a weirdly oscillating mix of formality and performative gestures at a distant target (Ali), or otherwise seems to 'pursue' a guy who is seemingly profoundly disinterested, (Adrien).

Plus like, I tend to assume that if she wanted Adrien as a boyfriend she probably could have swung that before school was even a thing. She was literally his only friend and company, the idea she never even tried seems odd if she was truly super interesting.

Plus, when fear regarding her relationship with Adrien comes up its rooted in the friendship over a potentially lost lover. The times she does lean on the idea of Adrien being her BF, tend to be more implied and usually used for a bit of social clout before being forgotten just as quickly.

It all really adds to the feeling her interest is, either consciously or subconsciously performative. More about playing a role than it is something she's genuine about.

Oh yeah absolutely!

Chloé's supposed romantic interests are in like. Safe people. Adrien is her friend and she wouldn't mind marrying him but she knows he won't return any feelings like that. While she has connections to be able to meet various celebrities, from popular-but-quickly-irrelevant idols like XY or someone genuinely influential like Ali, they're also not really people that there's hope for a proper relationship with, so they're also 'safe' for her to show interest in.

I think the thing about Chloé's seeming to be a lesbian is mostly in the way that she repeats her parents' relationship dynamic with her most obvious relationships: Sabrina and Ladybug.

Sabrina is the more obvious one because here, Chloé is playing Audrey while Sabrina plays Andre. The demanding, the devotion, the verbal abuse mixed in with genuine affection, the cold shoulder when she does something 'wrong', etc.

With Ladybug, it flips. Chloé is fawning. She's doing anything and everything to please Ladybug. To make her like her. And falls into despair when she 'fails'.

These are things she doesn't really do with the males she's showing affection with.

Tales of Bloody Bug and Chat Noir - Chapter 21 - Team Building

Bloody Bug and Chat Noir landed on a nearby rooftop after defeating an Akuma. They looked back as the media swarmed around them.

“Damn vultures. Were they always this bad?” Bloody Bug asked.

“I don’t think so. Did we do something?”

“Hell if I should know. I don’t watch the news or check anything like that. Anyway, let’s get going before your babysitter begins looking for you and can’t find you.”

“Oh, right. I mean, she should pretty preoccupied, hopefully. Why don’t we see if Andre’s ice cream cart is anywhere?”

“Dude, it’s like, the middle of November. December and winter are literally around the corner.”

“That doesn’t mean we can’t get ice cream.”

Bloody Bug rolled her eyes, but indulged Chat Noir. They searched the city until they found his cart at the Eiffel Tower. He ran up to order ice cream when Andre cheered.

“Bloody Bug and Chat Noir! Hello! I’m so glad you would grace my little ice cream cart.”

“Uh, yeah, we usually do,” Bloody Bug pointed out.

“Yes, but not since you two became celebrities.”

“I’m sorry, what? When did this happen?” Bloody Bug demanded.

“Oh, that’s cute. Acting like you don’t know.”

“Uh, we don’t,” Chat Noir said.

“What? How can that be? The whole city is talking about it.”

“Uh, since when?” Bloody Bug asked.

“You have been living under a rock these past couple of weeks,” Chat Noir remarked.

“Hey! I’ve been busy. What’s your excuse?”

Chat Noir paused. “Anyway, what’s this big news?”

“Jagged Stone is starting his new tour in Paris to celebrate his new album and the heroes that had saved him from Darkblade,” Andre announced.

Bloody Bug snorted. “I forget he was turned into a knight.”

“Yeah, I did too. When is this concert anyway?”

Andre opened his mouth but was interrupted by Kagami.

“Bloody Bug! Chat Noir! Have either of you seen Adrien Agreste? We were here when that villain was akumatized and now he’s just gone.”

Bloody Bug sighed and scooped up Kagami. “Rain check on the ice cream, Cat. Come along, person. We’ll look for Adrien together.”

“Wait!”

Bloody Bug ignored Kagami and swung up onto the rooftops. She glanced back to see Chat Noir was gone. She sighed and ran around until she heard Adrien call out. She leapt and landed near him, letting Kagami down.

“There you are! Where were you?” Kagami demanded.

“I-.”

“We set up strict guidelines for an Akuma attack. Why can’t you follow them? Why do I have to run around searching for you every time?”

“Well, you see-.”

“Enough. I’m taking you home.”

Kagami grabbed Adrien’s hand and dragged him away. Adrien turned and mouthed “help me,” to Bloody Bug. She sighed and ran to de-transform when a news crew surrounded her.

“Bloody Bug, a moment of your time, please,” Nadja Chamack asked.

“Uh, I guess, but make it quick.”

“Of course! Bloody Bug, as you surely know, Jagged Stone is hosting the start of his tour here in honor of you and Chat Noir. Will you be there?”

“Uh, I guess? I mean, his music is ok for his age.”

“And word is XY will be premiering there as well. What are your thoughts on that?”

Bloody Bug wrinkled her nose. “XY? Ew. Scratch that. If that loser is going to be playing his trash ass music, I ain’t going. I have more important things to do instead of letting my ears bleed from that shit.”

“But-!”

“Nope. We’re done.”

Bloody Bug tapped her boots against the ground and activated her hover shoes. She flipped off the news crew before she skated away. She swung by the street to see if Adrien and Kagami were around, but they were gone. She cursed and headed to the Seine. She skated on the water until she saw Chat Noir. She whistled and got his attention as he landed on a nearby walkway.

“Hey, sorry about not being to help you. Got bamboozled by the media.”

Chat Noir waved his hand dismissingly. “It’s fine. At least now I don’t have to worry about my babysitter. I need to do something about her.”

“Good luck with that.”

Chat Noir sighed and sat on the ground. “What do I do? What can I even do? She’s glued to me wherever I go. I mean, I’m grateful because Lila and Marinette don’t come near me. Neither does Chloe, but she seems… I dunno. Is different a good word to use?”

“She does feel, well, not herself. Anyway, Kagami though.”

“Right, right. I’ve tried to reason with her, but she won’t listen. She always shuts down the conversation saying that her mother and my father want us together. I get why Father wants her with me. She’s strong and capable, but also able to follow me into school and keep a closer eye on me there that Gorilla can’t. I just don’t get why her mother wants her with me.”

“I don’t pretend to understand your high-class world, Cat.”

“That makes two of us. Regardless, I need something to maybe get her to ease up. Oh! What if I told her?”

“Are you insane? How can we trust her? It’s clear she’s just doing all this because she was told to.”

“I know, but we need to build a team and-.”

Bloody Bug covered Chat Noir’s mouth. “Not here. Meet me at the old man’s shop.”

Chat Noir nodded. They split up and headed to Wang Fu’s massage shop. They moved past his massage room and into an empty spare room.

“Alright. I think it’s time we seriously talked about this. We’ve had enough time, we should be able to figure out who we want on this team,” Bloody Bug started.

Chat Noir nodded. He looked around and grabbed a paper and pen. “Let’s make a list of people we trust.”

“Fine. Might be best if we stick to our classmates. For better or for worse.”

“Agreed. Let’s see. Why don’t we start with Nino?”

“Eh, I could trust Nino. He hasn’t personally offended me, plus he’s your bro.”

Chat Noir wrote down Nino’s name. “Let’s see, Chloe?”

“I… I feel we can trust her. I believe she proved herself able against Volpina. I won’t deny she needs a little more direction, but it might be better if we took a more hands on approach in helping her become more of a hero.”

“So, if we trust Chloe, what about Sabrina?”

“I would trust Sabrina. You look at that girl and tell me she has the ability to betray anyone.”

Chat Noir considered. “Yeah, I don’t see that happening. I mean, she hasn’t betrayed Chloe and if Chloe is on our side, we can count on Sabrina.”

“Exactly. Let’s see, perhaps, maybe, Luka?”

“Really? You think he’d want to be a hero?”

“Maybe not an active one like us, but he has Fluff, just not the pocket watch. If the old man allows it, maybe Luka can be a fail save.”

“That should work. How about Nathaniel?”

“I really don’t want to deal with Tomato outside of school, but I can trust him enough. Uh, what do you think of Max and Kim?”

“Um, I don’t know. Kim is loud and a little annoying with his dares, but he seems ok? Max is cool, but sometimes he gives me a headache. Other than that, I would trust them if no one else was available. What about Ivan?”

Bloody Bug considered as she touched her nose ring. “I’ve considered Ivan. I would say I trust him. He was the first to truly take a chance to become my friend and has proven I can call him just that. I was gonna pass along Stompp to him, eventually.”

“Oh, and if you do, do you think you’d get a new miraculous to fuse with?”

“I can hope. But what about you? Don’t you want to unify?”

“I mean, I do, but it hasn’t been a month yet. Master Fu said after a month of me not purposely causing akumaizations, then he’ll consider giving me an elixir.”

“Ok, that’s fair.”

“I would hope, especially with what I did to Luka, I’m fine with this. Besides, if I’m lucky, just another couple of weeks.”

“If you can’t keep out of trouble that long, all hope is lost.”

Chat Noir smiled and rolled his eyes. “Let’s tackle the big ones. The girls. Marinette, Alya, Juleka, Rose, and Mylene.”

“Well, I think we can both agree Marinette is a hell no.”

Chat Noir nodded.

“I personally don’t trust Alya, but I know she won’t betray Bloody Bug.”

“Eh, maybe wait a little before bringing Alya back.”

“I can agree to that. Juleka I’m on the fence about. I want to trust her, but I don’t think I can just yet. I need more time. You?”

“I don’t know. I sorta betrayed her trust as Adrien, so maybe best not to test those waters just yet.”

“Agreed. Rose and Mylene are different. I know I can trust Mylene since she’s not necessarily in the girls’ group. Rose is difficult though. I can trust her, but it’s her connections with the other three that worry me, particularly Juleka. I never cared to ask, but I’m sure they’re dating, so-.”

“They are? Aw! That’s amazing. They’re perfect for each other,” Chat Noir purred.

“Focus.”

“Huh? Oh, right. So, wait on Rose, yeah?”

“I’d say so.”

“Right, ok. Gotcha. Um, there’s one thing I want to mention now that we’re discussing this.”

“What’s that?”

“Well, my cousin mentioned that he was looking for a peacock brooch. One that his father had mentioned in passing. I’m pretty sure he’s looking for a miraculous. Maybe if we find it, he’ll be on our team.”

“Keyword is ‘if.’”

“I know, but just food for thought. Speaking of food for thought, Kagami.”

Bloody Bug sighed. “Alright, look, I’m severely on the fence regarding your babysitter. I get it’ll make things easier for you if she knows, but I don’t know. I feel if we let her in, she’ll go running to her mother or your father.”

“That… that’s a fair point. So, wait on Kagami too. Alright, well, that gives us Nino, Mylene, Ivan, Nathaniel, Chloe, and Sabrina. Kim and Max too, but as last resorts, and Luka on the backburner.”

“Ok. So, what are we thinking?”

“I want Nino.”

Bloody Bug nodded. “I can agree to that. Nino hasn’t done anything wrong, and he proved himself able enough as Carapace.”

Chat Noir’s eyes widened. “Wait! He was Carapace? I knew it! I knew he was familiar!”

“Yup, that was it. I also think we should have Chloe on the team.”

“Should we have Sabrina too? Maybe Sabrina could help keep her in line?”

“That would be for the old man to decided. He gets a choice in this.”

“Yes, I do,” Wang Fu said.

Bloody Bug and Chat Noir looked over as Wang Fu entered with a tray of tea and biscuits.

“So, the day has come, has it? What have we decided on?” Wang Fu asked.

“I would like to have Carapace,” Chat Noir announced.

Wang Fu’s eyes widened, then he bowed his head. “Very well.”

Wang Fu took off his bracelet and handed it to Chat Noir.

“And I’ll be giving Gallic Chick the rooster rings again,” Bloody Bug declared.

“Are you sure about that one?”

“She has a lot of room to grow, but if I’m terribly flawed and one of your two big heroes, I don’t see why she can’t be given another chance. Besides, she hasn’t given me reason like Bomb Bee and Lady Tigress.”

Chat Noir winced. “Yeah, I’d rather not Lady Tigress on the team just yet.”

“Yeah, plus we kinda figured we could have Gallic Chick’s bestie have a miraculous to help sorta keep Gallic Chick in line,” Bloody Bug added.

Wang Fu raised a brow.

“Look, I have Cat, what’s wrong with her having someone too? C’mon, we can’t do all this shit alone. I know there are those that can, but we aren’t them. We need that support system. I need it, so will Gallic Chick.”

Wang Fu sighed. “Very well. I’ll trust that this is the right call. However, I will set in new ground rules. Since we’ve seen a mix of teens and adults akumatized, I want extra precautions taken. If any members of the team, you two included, succumb to an Akuma, you’ll be benched. Third time it happens, you’re done for good. Understood?”

“Understood,” Bloody Bug remarked.

“Yes,” Chat Noir whispered.

“Good. Now, sit tight. I’ll get the other miraculous.”

Bloody Bug and Chat Noir watched Wang Fu leave, then Chat Noir sighed.

“You don’t think either of us will be akumatized, do you?” Chat Noir asked.

“That’s hard to say. He seems to target those he can use, that are easily manipulated. I mean, Marinette and Lila folded if it meant getting you, Alya to find out who I am, Rose to get to Prince Ali, Juleka to be seen, Luka to get rid of all of you, and the list goes one. They all wanted something, something that Hawkmoth could give them. I believe so long as our desires are out of his reach, he cannot manipulate us as easily.”

“Well, what is it you want?”

Bloody Bug blinked. She stared down at her reflection in the tea before she looked up at Chat Noir. She snorted and smiled.

“I think I already have it.”

Chat Noir’s eyes widened as he pointed to himself. Bloody Bug nodded and Chat Noir’s eyes misted over. He lunged over the table and ensnared her in an embrace. She half-heartedly struggled as he purred and nuzzled her.

“Alright, fine, you get five minutes,” Bloody Bug remarked.

“Thank you, Bug, for everything.”

Bloody Bug let out a small gasp, then smiled. She turned and hugged Chat Noir back. “Right back at ya, Cat.”

Wang Fu cleared his throat. Bloody Bug and Chat Noir didn’t move but lifted their heads. Wang Fu handed Bloody Bug the rooster miraculous and a pink anklet.

“What’s the anklet?” Bloody Bug asked.

“That is the pig miraculous of jubilation. Its power will allow the holder to show their target whatever it is they want most, putting them in a dreamlike trance.”

“Well, that’ll be handy for Sabrina,” Chat Noir remarked.

“It will. Well, let’s get this over with. You got Nino?”

“Always. You got Chloe and Sabrina?”

Bloody Bug took a deep breath. “I sure hope so.”

Chat Noir smiled. “You got this, sis.”

Bloody Bug paused and smiled. “Thanks, bro. I’m gonna head out. I’ll see you later.”

Bloody Bug ran out. Wang Fu smiled and looked at Chat Noir.

“Thank you for being there for each other,” Wang Fu whispered.

“Thank you for picking us.”

“I admit I was worried, but as long as you two are together, I believe in you both. Now, run along. You have a friend you need to introduce to your team.”

“Right! Thank you again, Master!”

Bloody Bug landed on Chloe’s balcony at Le Grand Paris. She took a deep breath and knocked on the window. She saw Sabrina first before Chloe bolted over and threw open the door.

“Bloody Bug! I see you got my message. It’s about time you wanted to hang out with me,” Chloe boasted.

“Right, but before we do, I have something to do.”

“What? You aren’t leaving already then, are you?” Chloe asked.

“Quite the opposite. May I come in?”

Chloe nodded and stepped aside. Bloody Bug entered and shut the balcony door. Bloody Bug took out the miraculous jewels from her yo-yo and held them out for Chloe and Sabrina. Chloe’s eyes widened and sparkled while Sabrina tilted her head in confusion.

“What are these?” Sabrina asked.

“These are known as Miraculous. With them, we can be superheroes!” Chloe cheered.

“You mean like Bloody Bug and Chat Noir?” Sabrina asked.

“That’s right. Oh, and me now. Check it out. Orikko, sunrise.”

Orikko disappeared into the rings and transformed Chloe into Gallic Chick.

Sabrina’s jaw dropped. “You’re the rooster hero?”

“Surprised? You should be.”

“And I can be one too?” Sabrina asked.

“Yes. Your power will be that of jubilation. The power to show others what they desire most.”

Sabrina’s eyes widened as she put on the anklet. An orb shot out that morphed into a pig kwami.

“Hi ya! I’m Daizzi!”

“Hi, Daizzi. I’m Sabrina.”

Daizzi squealed. “Delighted to meet you, Sabrina! Are you to be my holder?”

“She is, but I have to lay down some ground rules,” Bloody Bug interrupted.

“Then we can hang out?” Gallic Chick asked.

Bloody Bug chuckled softly. “Yes, then we can hang out, but you need to listen.”

Gallic Chick and Sabrina closed their mouths.

“Alright. Now, we are going to be a team. It’ll be us, Chat Noir, and Carapace. I expect you both to make an effort to get along with each other, even as you may discover who we really are.”

“Wait, I have a question,” Sabrina said as she raised her hand.

“Go ahead.”

“Don’t you want us to keep our identities a secret?”

“It is preferred that you keep them secret from the city. However, you may not be able to keep them secret from each other. Evidence is clear enough with me and Chat Noir. That doesn’t mean you go out of your way to share it. Try to keep it hidden as much as you can.”

“And if we do figure it out?” Chloe asked.

“Well, then you figure it out. There’s no punishment, but you need to be cautious. Otherwise, I don’t see an issue personally unless you are at risk of being turned into a monster by our enemy, which leads me to the next point.”

“What’s that?” Sabrina asked.

“Alright. Chloe, I know you’ve been akumatized, but, Sabrina, you haven’t. Basically, our enemy, Hawkmoth, targets people that are vulnerable and that he can easily manipulate. Think Juleka wanting revenge on Chloe, Nino wanting to throw a party for Adrien, or even you, Chloe, for whatever the reason was. They all felt helpless and powerless in those cases, making them easy prey. So long as you don’t fall that far and remind yourself that there are other solutions to your problems, you should be safe.”

“And if we fall prey?” Chloe asked.

“In those cases, your jewel will be revoked. You get three chances to prove yourself able to resist the villain. After the third time, you will be kicked off the team and your jewel taken away. This rule applies to Chat Noir and myself as well, so we need to all be careful.”

“What if akumas are caused, say, by accident?” Sabrina asked.

“That’s… where there’s a line. Chat Noir intentionally caused one, which resulted in a different punishment. If it’s by accident, then it doesn’t really fall on your shoulders. The fault would really fall on the person for falling victim and allowing this to happen. Assuming that’s how it really works. Chloe?”

“I think? I sorta remember a man asking me if I wanted to get rid of Chat Noir and that he’d give me powers of my own if I agreed to help him. I… accepted.”

Bloody Bug hummed. “I see. So, there has to be some level of agreement on the victim’s end? That makes things interesting. Well, taking that in mind, if it is by accident, I would put more blame on the person for accepting still. Now, any other questions?”

Chloe and Sabrina shook their heads.

“Do we understand the conditions?”

Chloe and Sabrina nodded.

“Alright. Suit up, Sabrina. We’re going to go hang out. Consider this our first team-building exercise.”

Daizzi cheered. “Just say, ‘Daizzi, rejoice!’”

Sabrina beamed. “Daizzi, rejoice!”

Chat Noir slipped down along the side of Nino’s apartment building to Nino’s bedroom window. He perched himself and knocked on the window. He waited a moment before Nino pulled back the curtain and his jaw dropped. Nino fussed with the lock before he opened the window.

“Chat Noir, dude. What’s hanging, aside from you?”

“I got something for you.”

Nino tilted his head as Chat Noir held out the turtle miraculous.

“Do you guys need me to fight a villain?”

“Better. We want you on our team.”

“Woah! Me? Really?”

“That’s right, meow dude. Bug and I talked it over. You may only taken to the field once, we feel that we can trust you.”

Nino beamed and put on the bracelet. Chat Noir smiled when his staff rang. He pulled it out and pressed on the pawprint button, answering Bloody Bug’s call.

“Yo, Cat, you got Carapace yet?”

“You bet. Just gave him his miraculous again.”

“Cool. Meet us at the Eiffel Tower. We’re having a day on the city. Team building and all that jazz.”

Chat Noir’s ears perked up. “What do you say, Carapace? You down for it?”

“Of course, my dude! Let’s do it. Wayzz, shell on.”

Chat Noir and Carapace headed towards the Eiffel Tower where they met up with Bloody Bug, Gallic Chick, and a girl with big ginger pigtails in a white and pink magic girl uniform.

“What’s up, dudes? I don’t think we met. I’m Carapace.”

“We haven’t. I’m Gallic Chick.”

“And I’m Porcelet! Pleasure to meet you, Carapace.”

“Likewise. So, almighty Bug, what’s the plan?” Carapace asked.

“Well, first I owe Chat Noir an ice cream. We were interrupted when his babysitter showed up,” Bloody Bug teased.

Chat Noir’s ears flicked. “Please don’t remind me.”

“Oh, but I will. After that, we’ll go on patrol. Give you all a better chance to adjust to your new abilities and what not. Sound good?”

Everyone nodded.

“Excellent. Alright, team, let’s go!”
