Do you like Squid Facts?
🔲Yes
🔲No
This valentines day, we thought you might need a little help from cephalopods to celebrate. Get a pack of 20 cards for your classroom, your coworkers, your neighborhood, frankly anyone who needs both a valentine AND a little bit of science to boot.
Get 'em here: https://squidfacts.bigcartel.com/
Proceeds benefit science education nonprofit Skype a Scientist AND the graduate student who designed these cards who is studying octopuses (Meg Mindlin @invertebabe!). Meg is trying to afford to get to a cephalopod neuroscience conference later this year and these cards will help her get there 🫡
They, of course, come with the classic heart stickers, a range of shades of pink and purple included.

what if we were both hummingbird bobtail squid and you saw my globular eyes peeking out of the sand and you told me i was the most beautiful babe in the whole benthic zone and we danced the night away and then you woke up in a cold sweat facedown in a Wendy’s parking lot wearing a michelin man costume. what would you do then

Taxonomy Tournament: Cephalopods
Sepiolida. This order is made up of Bobtail squid, which has a round mantle. They have a light organ inhabited by bioluminisecent bacteria, which it uses to provide light below them to obscure its sillhouette.
Nautilida. This order is made up of nautilis, which have a unique planispiral shell, and move via jet propulsion. They're morphologically veyr similar to their ancient relatives, and are often called living fossils.

Alien Bobtail, Bobtail squid (Sepiola atlantica) under Paignton pier, Devon, England
‘Taking photos underwater at night, it is possible to see a range of species not always visible during the day. Bobtail squid are out hunting at night and their stunning neon colours catch my torch and strobe lights. They often patrol over sand patches hunting for prey such as tiny shrimp. In this case, there was a lot of sand suspended in the water, but rather than trying to remove the sand from the shot I felt it added to an otherworldly atmosphere’

So how do hawaiian bobtail squids select their bacterial partners?
I have a doodle from years ago just for this question!
So when bobtails first hatch, they don't have the bioluminescent bacteria they need to blend in with moonlight coming from above.
Making light is super energetically expensive, so they don't want to make light if they don't have to. They wait until as a group they can produce enough light to be useful for the squid.

Yo! Do you the guy in "Laughter from scientists" meme? I think its some kind of cuttlefish but I am not sure.
I named it greg
OF COURSE I KNOW GREG!!!!!
he is a stubby squid aka rossia pacifica, a type of bobtail squid!! (which is more closely related to cuttlefish than squid or octopus, but I still tag them as squid)
