Were the feathered serpents ever given wings by the aztecs/mayans or was that added later on?
The Maya and the Aztecs did not give their feathered serpents wings, as far as I know!
I may be incorrect here, but I think the 'winged feathered serpent in Mesoamerica' thing became popular from the Dragonology books by Dugald Steer. Dragonology includes the 'Mexican Amphithere', a winged feathered serpent associated with Quetzalcoatl and Kukulkan. The world 'amphithere' is from European heraldry (you can probably tell from a certain French-ness in the word 'amphithere'), and the Dragonology team merged 'winged serpent amphithere' with 'feathered serpent coatl' to create their dragon design, which caught on as a popular idea in a lot of fantasy art. As far as I know, winged feathered serpents from Mesoamerica are a fantasy art convention whereas wingless feathered serpents are more in keeping with art history from that area.
There are feathered and winged serpents in mythology, but they are not coameh from Mesoamerica - I don't have access to my books right now so off the top of my head I can only think of the gwiber from Wales.

Wild that I never got around to posting this! This was my piece for @dotzines 's Wizard zine, Dotnomicon: Grimoire of Wonders (get yourself a free digital copy using this post!) I had a blast working on this! Thank you for giving me the oppertunity to make it♡
I was really going for the vibes of the Costco "ology" books by Dugald Steer. Dragonology and Wizardology were 100% my favourites♡

9 people you'd like to get to know better
This is my second super-unexpected-tag-game this week, is that considered a good or bad omen on this site? Anyway, thanks @andromedaholic, I'm extremely bored today and this is fun!
3 ships: the main ones are Bucky Barnes/Helmut Zemo (MCU), Corvo Attano/The Outsider (Dishonored), and James "Biggles" Bigglesworth/Erich von Stalhein (Biggles Series). I like many others, but that would be too long a list.
First ship: I'm pretty sure it was, and I have no idea if anyone knows these people even exist, William Lubber/Arabella Drummond from the book Pirateology: A Pirate Hunter's Companion by Dugald Steer. Just two people hunting each other with murderous intent... My tastes haven't changed much, by the way.
Last song: My Church by Aviators. I'm very normal about Aviators.
Last film: Clive Gordon's Cargo (2006). Don't watch it. I only did it for Daniel Brühl and to make gifsets for my friends :3
Currently reading: nothing, but I'm thinking about reading The Terror. The last book I read was The Alienist by Caleb Carr.
Currently craving: more than four hours of restful sleep.
Fav color: black.
Relationship status: single.
Last thing googled: plexiglass. Saw the word in a post and wanted to know what it was. It's called differently in my native language.
Current obsessions: Daniel Brühl (especially his role in The Alienist) and Dishonored (this obsession started many years ago, and it has never gone away, in fact it may never leave me at all).
Tagging (no pressure whatsoever): @six-demon-bag, @hiddenxplaces-blog, @takuventures, @ithilien-wolf, @winterbonesthings, @evilwinterfruit, @milarca, @cass-without-the-andra, @karnaca78

Types Of Dragons
A list of Dragons that fly in honor of Dragon Appreciation Day (but not really, I was already making this post and procrastinating). This is for fun and I’m not claiming to be an expert on the subject.
Dragon : Germanic & English, mostly
Tumblr media
Art Credit: Ciruelo Cabral
Key features: Serpent-like, winged and has four limbs. Generally smooth or scaly, but can also be hairy. They are large with muscled bodies, most of the time, but they can vary in size.
Tumblr media
Often known for their fire breathing, relaying earthly wisdom, strong sense of justice and hoarding treasure. If you’re lucky, one might share a tale of their youth or regale you with a poem…but, they’re terrible singers.
They have a vendetta against sheep. Most likely to be residing in a cave, mountain or holding a princess hostage in a castle tower for arbitrary reasons. They like to amuse themselves at the expense of love-struck knights. Don’t ever ask one whose bones are wedged in their teeth.
Also, low key might be allies with the princess or a sorcerer (or both, and sometimes they are the same person). Dragons love eating fish and collecting gold. They’re easily distracted by shiny things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some well-known dragons in various forms of media include Draco (Dragon Heart), Smaug (Lord of The Rings), Dragon (Pagemaster) and Toothless (How To Train Your Dragon) just to name a few of them.
Tumblr media
Amphithere: American, Mexican, North African and European affiliations
Tumblr media
Artist Credit: Sleeping Fox
Key features: A serpent with feathers. They are large, but unlike the dragon are more lithe in form. They are winged and limbless (usually). Often mistaken for the Wyvern who has two limbs. Their wings can be bat-like with feathers or entirely feathered like a birds. They are the most colorful and stylish of dragon-types.
They are known for divine power, connections to spirituality, wisdom, being gate keepers and draining the life force of foes.
They are masters of grudges and will block your path to heaven for staring at their food wrong. They are incredibly analytical and intuitive.
There are not too many known Amphithere’s in media outside of Dugald Steer’s Dragonology and specific Mythos.
There is the Aztec God Quetzalcóatl who is accredited to being the creator of wind and rain storms. Additionally, he is perceived as the creator of humanity.
He is the God of education, arts, agriculture and science. He gifted humanity with cocoa beans and chocolate.
Tumblr media
You can continue to read more about him here, here, here and also here to start you off.
Please be respectful and use this knowledge for curiosity and appreciation reasons only.
Devotes may not associate him literally with dragons, which is why I consider him strictly to be the possible inspiration for the Amphithere mythos. According to my research, he is still worshipped by the Cora and Huichol tribes.
Anyway, this wraps up for part one. If you’re wanting to learn anything more specifically then you can apply your own reading and research skills at your leisure. ♥️

what is working in a library like? omg that's so cool!!! what are your top 5 books?
Working in a library is fun! I work as a very rural branch, but we're connected to other libraries all over Missouri through the Missouri Evergreen program! It's also very lowkey, just how I like it.
As for my top five books, well, that depends on what category you're asking about! I'll run through a few:
Fiction:
Iron Widow | Xiran Jay Zhao
Dragonology & Wizardology series | Dugald Steer
The Art of Destiny volumes 1 and 2
Magic The Gathering Legends: A Visual History | Jay Annelli
The Dragon Ball Super manga series | Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou
Nonfiction:
On Writing And Worldbuilding volume 1 | Timothy Hickson (I'm looking to get volume 2 in the near future!)
The Old Farmer's Almanac 2022 and 2023 | Robert B Thomas
Ozark Folk Magic | Brandon Weston
Grovedaughter Witchery | Bree NicGarran (hi Bree!)
Queer Magic & Morbid Magic | Tomas Prower (I'm looking forward to getting his Justice Magic and La Santa Muerte books in the near future too!)

Basilisk
[First shot at posting a creature I’ve homebrewed, bare with me.
The well-known basilisk from Pathfinder 2E just doesn’t live up to its mythical namesake for me. It lacks all the flavour that the basilisk of folklore has and doesn’t pose as much of a threat as I feel such a storied creature should.
This version of the basilisk is a much higher level (17 vs. 5), and poses a more significant threat to PCs. It’s intelligent enough to serve as a actual villain for an extended campaign and more than deadly enough to act as a tough foe for a highly-levelled party.
Many of the mythical powers of the basilisk (it’s deadly venom, lethal eyes and fear of weasels) are baked into this version of the basilisk). The basilisk’s ability to change shape is my own addition, based on the basilisk of Dugald Steer’s Dragonology series to do so.
In my homebrew world, the weaker level 5 basilisk does still exist, but it’s the varonisk described in the flavour text, and not directly related this more powerful version.]
Basilisk
Tumblr media
Image Credit: giantwood on DeviantArt (https://www.deviantart.com/giantwood/art/Basilisk-525836468)
Among the most feared of all beasts, basilisks are gigantic, serpentine monsters that exude potent venom and kill with a glance. Resembling a muscular serpent with a scaled body that extends for almost 60 feet, a basilisk is a fearful sight to behold and a perilous foe to do battle with.
A basilisk’s body is covered with razor-sharp spurs oozing with venom. Smaller spines form a crown atop its snake-like head, earning it the moniker “king of serpents”. Eight stumpy, clawed legs emerge from the basilisk’s body, but these aren’t used for battle or motility as basilisk slither like snakes over land and through water. Instead these limbs allow the creature to quickly pivot or anchor themselves when climbing.
The potent venom of the basilisk isn’t just supplied to their spurs and fangs, it also courses through the beast’s skin in a modified form, coating anything the basilisk touches. This has the added effect of withering away vegetation and insects as the basilisk moves through the world. A basilisk’s body is filled with a black toxic gore that violently erupts to cover attackers when it is severely wounded. Anything that proves resistant to a basilisk’s various toxins can be captured and crushed in its coils. However the monster’s most deadly weapon is its deadly eyesight; any creature meeting the monster’s lidless yellow eyes risks being instantly slain.
Basilisks shun almost all other living things. They prefer to live in bogs, swamps or wet fields, but will tolerate living in sewers or squalid dungeons if it necessitates their various schemes. A basilisk’s vast intellect is equivalent to that of a brilliant mage or philosopher. Though a basilisk’s desires rarely extend beyond filling their belly and inflicting the maximum amount of death and suffering, they are reticent to hunting for themselves or venturing far form their lairs, preferring instead to coerce or trick lesser creatures into catering to these desires. Some basilisks have loftier ambitions, such as ruling over whole cities or small kingdoms for themselves or seeking out artifacts to extend their already lengthy lifespans.
Basilisks can live for around 800 years, and their temperament seems to only worsen with age. They attract all sort of dangerous creatures simply by proximity, but their favored servants are cockatrices, which they regard as lesser kin. Basilisks are said to hatch from toad’s eggs incubated by roosters, making them effectively the reverse of cockatrices, which hatch from rooster’s eggs incubated by toads. Though a basilisk might seem an impossible foe to a typical soldier, an educated slayer should carry a mirror to reflect the monster’s deadly vision back against them and bring along a rooster or weasel to repel the creature.
Basilisks are often confused with the lesser creature known as a varonisk or petrifier lizard (sometimes called a lesser basilisk), but these are wholly different creatures despite their superficial similarities.
When fully grown (after around 150 years of age), a basilisk can reach lengths of about 35 feet and weighs over 3,200 pounds.

Today I finally learned about the author of Dragonology and he looks exactly as I would imagine the in-universe author Dr. Ernest Drake to look
Tumblr media
This is exactly what a man born in 1873 whose love of dragons was discouraged by his teachers until he joined the Secret and Ancient Society of Dragonologists and began making his living by studying the dragons living near his castle in Surrey and eventually earned the title of Dragon Master through his teaching and breakthroughs in dragon rearing before dying at the age of 75 would look like.

I know everyone cites Percy Jackson, Harry Potter or The Secret History as their entry into dark academia, but I think we’ve all been forgetting these ??
Tumblr media
Literally any modern academic, astrology, historian could be tied to these. The art in them and the interactive aspects?? Forget anything else THIS was the blueprint. We all wish our bullet journals and study notes looked like these.
Tumblr media
Not to mention there is a film in development with the premise of "a research institute, where the fringe sciences that no one else takes seriously are studied in earnest” ??!!! Guys it's made for us. Everyone go thank author Dugald Steer!
Tumblr media
And also make your own book like this for your subject specialty so I can enjoy learning like a kid again. Maybe  I’ll present my master’s thesis in one of these bad boys, who knows?
