Christmas special: Some gift ideas
Hello, Athe here!
I've been thinking a lot about some small gifts that I think would be perfect for the characters. Sort of like Christmas ideas for small budgets. I've tried to find some visual references and give some context for those who don't know the characters that well. It would be interesting to see what you guys would come up with, especially, for your own OCs… I'm going to leave a blank template below for anyone who wants to add some more or create their own OC version. We will reblog all your suggestions, you can also leave them in our ask which is always open. Happy holidays!
Tumblr media
Arael
Protective console case or gaming case: You can't go wrong with anything related to video games, especially if it's something with a cute aesthetic. Arael can't resist that kind of thing.
Ice cream maker: No more endless queues in the canteen. Arael will be able to make his own personalised ice cream with one of these machines.
Kigurumi: A warm pyjama to spend their hours in front of the computer playing or in your company.
Tumblr media
Zihel
Fire extinguisher: It goes without saying why it's a good idea for Zihel to have a fire extinguisher on hand.
Some new clothes: The truth is that his clothes are outdated and quite torn. You would do him a favour by buying him something even if he won't thank you directly. Besides, he will accept any style you want to put on him without putting up too much of a fuss.
Survival kit: Zihel has always been interested in everything related to hunting and survival. He'll surely appreciate a kit with everything he needs for an adventurous weekend (or another kind of weekend…).
Tumblr media
Kyeran
Original teapot or tea set: Kyeran really enjoys drinking hot tea, so he would love a tea set. If you take the opportunity to give it a personalised touch in keeping with his style of decoration, you will make him very happy.
Portable hammock: You never know when you'll want to rest during a desert trek. A portable hammock can be ideal for him, but also for you to share a romantic moment.
Emotional support dolls: Anything you've made by hand will be highly valued, but these cute little dolls with motivational phrases will lift anyone's spirits.
Tumblr media
Joe
Portable charger: Don't ever catch Joe without a charge on one of her many devices. Without them Joe could go crazy and you will probably be her target.
Pyjamas or satin pillowcase: Inexpensive options to recreate a luxurious experience. Either is a good choice. Joe loves to feel pampered.
Massage oil: It's likely that with this you can both participate.
Tumblr media
Opal
Handmade candles: Since Opal discovered that he has a good sense of smell, he has also found that the smells of scented candles relax him a lot. It is easy for him to get stressed or irritable, but candles help him to calm his nerves.
Watchmaking tools: Opal has started a new trade and is comfortable repairing and making wind-up watches. But he often loses his tools or they break. A new kit is always welcome.
Work apron: Another thing he has recently discovered is that he enjoys working with the soil and could do with a work apron to keep all his gardening tools in.
Tumblr media
Ariel
Poker cards with famous musicians: He likes to play card games, especially if gambling is involved. If you buy him some personalised cards like these, you can be sure he'll always have them with him.
Special edition vinyls: Any music fan would love something like this. You can't go wrong with an original edition of one of your favourite bands.
Skull-shaped ice bucket or whiskey set: There are quite a few objects in this shape in Ariel's house. We thought he might like something to do with alcohol.
Tumblr media
Akane
Pizza oven: Akane is a ramen and pizza fanatic. This time, we thought it might be nice to have a mini oven so that her pizzas are always perfect.
Car bin: Everyone knows that Akane loves driving, but not so much tidiness and cleanliness. Help her to keep it all tidy with this mini-trash bin for the car.
Exercise dice: She loves sport. We suggest you give her something more original than a pair of trainers or a bottle of water with a dice to help him choose her daily exercises.
Tumblr media
Hasiel
Ultrasonic cleaner: Anyone who owns glasses will understand Hasi's problems with keeping his glasses clean. You'd be doing him a big favour by buying him a little machine like this.
Writers' Socks: Although he wouldn't usually wear colourful, flashy clothes, socks are perfect for letting his imagination run wild. Especially if they are about a subject that interests you as much as books do.
Diorama bookmarks: Another Christmas classic are bookmarks, but I have found some that recreate mythical scenes from classic books. They are available for many works and can be a perfect complement to special editions of books.
Tumblr media
Pin
Pencil holder: I couldn't resist making this little inside joke. A little reminder won't hurt either.
Snack advent calendar: Why ask for one gift when you can have 24? He would love any advent calendar, but a snack calendar seems appropriate for him.
Projector: With a small projector he can watch films and series in his sorority room or invite you to join him.
Tumblr media
Maske
Fingerprint padlock: A secure padlock for a person who hides a lot of secrets. Maske loves tech gadgets and keeping their privacy safe.
Cup warmer: For someone who drinks a lot of coffee and has insomnia, this cup warmer will keep your cups at the perfect temperature.
Spice collection: It's no secret that Maske likes to cook, so they have a lot of utensils, so the smartest thing I could think of is to give them some kind of exotic spice kit so they can innovate in their kitchen and get out of their comfort zone a bit.
Tumblr media
Aracne
Gothic picnic basket: A perfect basket for two to have a romantic meal in the forest with Opal.
Couples' keepsake wheel: Important dates and memories can be engraved on it. A romantic and personalised gift.
Sewing scissors: A nice pair of scissors is a must in the sewing basket of a seamstress.

🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧🚧
Tumblr media
Pin
Portalápices: No me he podido resistir a hacer esta pequeña broma interna.

For years, you could find pletzl, a flatbread topped with raw or caramelized onions and poppy seeds, sold alongside bagels and bialys at Jewish bakeries along the East Coast. Pletzl was brought to the U.S. by Polish, Lithuanian and Ukrainian Jews in the mid-20th century, but the bread never seemed to capture the American palette the way bagels have, and it slowly faded into semi-obscurity.
Pletzl (aka onion board or platzel) is typically made from flour, yeast, oil, salt and water. In “The Encyclopedia of Jewish Food,” Gil Marks explains how this bread, the texture of which can be thin like a cracker or light and airy with a more focaccia-esque crumb, gained popularity in the 19th century, as Eastern European Jews gained access to modern milling equipment and techniques that allowed them to move beyond the rye bread they were accustomed to and toward lighter flatbreads.
Pletzel’s exact origins are unclear, but we can fairly reliably connect them to their successors, bialys, which Mimi Sheraton, food critic and author of “The Bialy Eaters,” theorizes was born from a pletzel gone rogue:
“My theory is that a pletzel, having been formed but not baked, fell on the floor and somebody stepped on it with the heel going into the center, and being frugal decided to bake it anyway and see what happened. And so, the bialy was born.”
Linguistically, Marks connects pletzl to German plätzchen (crackers). He also notes that the origin of the term “onion board” is likely due to the fact that the flatbread would’ve been formed on a baking board, known in Yiddish as a lokshen bretl. Bretl, Marks suggests, sounds similar to pletzel.
You can still find this tragically underrated bread — if you know where to look. These days, rather than the traditional oblong shape formed on a baking board, some bakeries sell pletzlach as rolls or discs, which more closely resemble the bialy. Kossar’s Bagels and Bialys in New York sells an almost pizza-like circular version, which, thanks to the miracles of same-day shipping, is available to order via Goldbelly.
The Yiddish word “pletzl” means ‘little place,” and it’s also the former name of the Jewish quarter in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. There, on Rue de Écouffes, Florence Kahn sells a pletzel sandwich from her eponymous bakery. Though traditionally pletzel were served whole with a schmear of cream cheese or chopped liver on top, Khan cuts hers down the middle to make a sandwich, filled with pastrami, turkey or corned beef, topped with a variety of vegetables.  Following suit, Joe Baur uses pletzl to play on the Iraqi-Israeli sabich sandwich, with silky eggplant and flavorful amba.
Pletzl is simple to make at home. Like many historical recipes, there are plenty of discrepancies. “There are at least eighteen or so varieties of pletzl,” Marks writes. “The most famous one is topped with the principal Ashkenazic seasoning, onions (tzibele); it is known as tzibele pletzl; tzibele zemmel, tzibele papalik, and simply pletzl.” There are also sweet pletzels without onions.
While Kahn’s pletzl dough is enriched with eggs and sugar, Leah Koenig’s recipe in “Modern Jewish Cooking” (as well as my recipe below) omits egg in the dough and tops the flatbread with pre-cooked onions. More than the dough itself, it’s the ease of cooking that seems to be a common thread among pletzls. Whether you whip up a quick dough of flour, yeast, salt and water or use a big pinch of your Shabbat challah dough, the idea is the same.
Note: Bread will last for 2-3 days in an airtight container on the counter.

Someone Before Me–Joe Keery
Tumblr media
Joe and I moved to LA shortly after graduation. He came to become an actor while I came to become a famous artist. He was fulfilling his dream. He loved his job and loved where he was.
I wish I could say the same. I wasn't famous. I wasn't fulfilling my dream. And I didn't love where I was.
I was working on my feet all day as a hostess at the nearby Olive Garden. I do get to take home an entire salad and a dozen breadsticks at the end of the night.
I walked into my apartment, every muscle in my body aching. I kicked off my shoes, tossed my keys into the bowl, and hung up my jacket and purse. I sat down on the couch, trying to sigh my day off.
I groaned, turning into a whimper as my phone started ringing. Unfortunately, it was still in my purse. I forced myself to stand up and answer my phone.
"Hello?"
"You sound tired," Joe laughed.
"Because I've been on my feet for six hours," I sighed as I walked back to my couch and collapsed onto it.
"I'm sorry," he sighed. "Are you too tired for movie night?"
"Never," I instantly perked up. "I can order pizza. Are you done with filming?"
"I will be by the time the pizza gets to your place."
"Are you okay?" I asked when I noticed the tone of his voice change.
"I'm fine."
"Joe," I cut him off, "what's going on? You sound weird. Is everything okay at work?"
"It's fine," he tried to convince me again.
"Joe?"
"Fine," he sighed, giving in. "For some reason, I seem to be struggling this season. Not with my acting. Just with. . . everything else."
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know," he sighed, his frustration coming through the phone. "I'm tired a lot more. And sometimes. . . I struggle to get out of bed."
"Do you think you could be depressed?" I asked cautiously. "I don't want to be overstepping my bounds, but you're my best friend and I worry about you, Joe. I know how it feels."
"What do you mean?" He asked my earlier question but with a little more panic.
"When we first moved here, art school got really overwhelming," I sighed. "I got scared. I was on my own and you were busy so I didn't want to bother you."
"You should've," he said so softly I almost missed it.
"I was about to, but then you got that call from your manager."
"What call?"
"The one where he told you that you had landed the role of Steve Harrington," I explained.
"Oh," he whispered. "I didn't mean to make you feel like you couldn't tell me you were struggling."
"You didn't," I said quickly. "I could've still told you, but I didn't want to ruin your excitement."
"I'm sorry, Y/N."
"I wasn't trying to make you feel guilty," I sighed. "I wanted to make sure you knew that I understand what you're going through. I want to help you."
"I appreciate that," Joe said, his voice finally lightening up. "I'll be over in about twenty minutes, okay? Want me to pick anything up on my way?"
"I'll handle the pizza," I smiled. "You grab some treats."
                                * * * * *
Joe and I spent the rest of the night binge-watching our favorite TV show. The entire time he was over, he was acting a little strange. He kept glancing at me, chewing his bottom lip. He only ever did that when he had something on his mind. I paused our show and turned toward him.
"What?" He laughed.
"You tell me," I said simply. "You haven't been yourself since you came over. I know that you've been struggling with work, but I feel like something else is bothering you. Something heavier."
"I guess you're not wrong," he mumbled looking at his hands instead of me.
"What's going on?" I asked gently. I reached over and grabbed his hand.
"Sometimes," he started to explain as he looked up at me, "I look at you and I can't understand how someone before me didn't see what I see. Sometimes I look at you, and I can't understand how someone before me didn't notice how beautiful you are. Sometimes I look at you and I feel lucky that someone before me didn't notice because if they had seen what I've always seen within you, then I wouldn't have been able to have a chance to love you the way I do."
"Wait," I stuttered, my voice getting caught in my throat. "I don't. . . I don't understand, Joe. You're. . . What?"
"I'm in love with you, Y/N," Joe smiled. "That's what. I've been in love with you since middle school."
"Middle school?"
"Since Ryan Anderson asked me if he could ask you out and I punched him in the middle of PE."
"Wait," I smiled, "is that why you got suspended for three days a week into eighth grade?"
"Yeah," he shrugged, his face slightly turning pink.
"I think that's adorable," I whispered.
"That I got into a fight?"
"That you got into a fight over your protectiveness for me," I said like it should've been obvious.
"Over my love for you," he corrected. That's when I realized we both have been leaning closer.
"Oh, right," I smirked. "That."
I don't know who initiated it. All I knew was his lips were pressed to mine. Joe reached up and cupped my cheek in one hand while his other gently rested on my knee. He deepened the kiss, proving his confession. I leaned fully into the kiss, neither one of us holding back.
I giggled when he pulled me over so I was straddling his hips. I broke the kiss to see him still smiling at me.
"I don't understand what has gotten into you," I whispered as I looked up at him, "but I'm not going to question it."
"It's simple," he shrugged. "I've been in love with you for so long. I can't believe I finally get to call you mine."
I bit my lip to stop the moan that almost slipped. "Call me," I whispered.
"What?"
"Call me yours."
He smirked as he closed the gap between us, pushing his hands on my back to press my body against his. He slightly rubbed our noses together as different parts of his body rubbed against mine.
"You are all mine, gorgeous," he whispered sending a chill down my spine.
I moaned as I grabbed his face and pulled his lips down to mine. We got lost in the kiss as we showed each other how much we loved each other. I broke the kiss long enough to get a few final words in before we officially crossed the line between friendship and something more.
"I don't want to be anyone else's."

Harry and Sal Mineo
I’m absolutely obsessed with the original Spider-Man 2 script, the one by Michael Chabon, describing Harry this way -
Tumblr media
“He wakes up like Sal Mineo in Rebel Without a Cause.” If you’re not familiar with Sal Mineo and his performance as Plato in that famous James Dean movie - it’s considered to be one of the very first times a gay teenager was depicted in an American film, but because of the Hays Code no-one could come out and say he was gay, it just had to be heavily implied. From this article:
Ray had always intended the character of Plato to be gay, even naming him after the ancient Greek philosopher and noted proponent of dude-on-dude love. According to a 2005 Vanity Fair article on Ray, the director was aware of Dean’s bisexuality and urged him to use in his performance. For their intimate scene in the abandoned mansion, Dean instructed Mineo to “look at me the way I look at Natalie.”
and also...
Mineo would go on to become a queer icon in his own right. In the 1960s, Mineo realized his attraction to men (perhaps debunking VIdal’s assertion) and by the 70s he had come out as bisexual. But his career faltered. He was stabbed to death in 1976 in West Hollywood, the rumored victim of some rough trade. That urban legend persisted for years because investigators found gay porn in Mineo’s apartment, but the man eventually charged with his murder didn’t know Mineo and it was likely a simple case of robbery. Famed gay-baiter James Franco brought Mineo’s final days to life in his 2011 film, Sal.
You might think that Chabon put that line into his script as a tribute to James Franco, Harry’s actor... except that he wrote his Spider-Man 2 script long before Franco released his film. (And before it turned out Franco was a sex offender, but I digress.) I suppose it could have been a tribute to how Franco played James Dean in a movie pre- his being cast as Harry Osborn, but I doubt it. Chabon seems to have been a fan of Mineo since in his script, the pizza place where Peter works is called Mineo’s Pizza rather than Joe’s Pizza.
Tumblr media
(...this could also double as an incredibly dark joke, as it was a pizza delivery man who stabbed Mineo to death in a random attack in 1976.)
“Like Sal Mineo in Rebel Without A Cause” is one tiny but very very interesting line in a script that ended up being used as a basis for the Spider-Man 2 we eventually got. Especially since Michael Chabon is very well versed in queer theory. Was Harry meant to be looking at Peter the same way James Dean looked at Natalie Wood?
Tumblr media
I would LOVE to hear other people’s thoughts on this, especially since it’s been literal decades since I watched Rebel Without A Cause.

happy 2024. yall still have to suffer my rants. sorry
so i think everyone remembers that period from 2015 to 2021 or maybe later, when everyone was creaming themselves over the dead horse scenario of “wHaT iF the NaZiS wOn ThE wAr”
yeah i aint gonna go into specifics but im pretty sure everyone remembers. mostly because of what they wrote with superman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
god people need to stop milking this shit.
so I’ve gone into detail in other posts about how dc is notoriously flimsy and escapist with the subject of nazi germany and just…nazism in general, either they’ll just use it as a vehicle to virtue signal or they straight up deny its horrors. yeah, sad but true. same with this.
except there was someone (obviously non-dc affiliated) who actually got the superman scenario right. not grant morrison, venditti and every other weirdo who had their fingers in this literal dumpster fire. kim newman, who wrote “ubermensch” in 1991, before “red son” and the other superman alternate histories, and showed more empathy for the holocaust and the victims of nazi germany than dc could ever care to.
because. unlike dc, newman wasn’t running on propaganda tradition and cutesy escapism like they were.
continued under the cut.
tw: nazism, the holocaust, genocide, anti-semitism, racism, murder, historical gore, literary mention of israeli imperialism, and nazi propaganda
Tumblr media
so right off the bat it’s obvious that newman knows his history. the story takes place in a recently reunified postwar germany at the end of the cold war. metropolis is analogous to berlin, it’s a famous city in-story that was split into an east and west sector. the main character is avram blumenthal, a holocaust survivor turned nazi hunter, much like the real life simon wiesenthal. the superman analogue in this story is held in spandau prison, the real-life facility for nazi war criminals where rudolf hess was imprisoned for the remainder of his life.
just by looking at that. you could never find a dc writer who puts in this much time and effort to research the past and depict it in a non exploitative manner.
there’s also some commentary on western us capitalism/consumerism that defined ‘our’ progress in the cold war (pizza hut and mcdonalds in the ussr anyone) and the “third position” of fascism being the “alternative” between capitalism and communism:
Tumblr media
and! newman actually respects superman’s jewish mythos! he includes it in here, which is something i’ve never seen the overman writers do. jerry siegel and joe shuster were both jewish. and, no matter what dc tells you about nazis having ‘superheroes’ of their own, this was actually one of the reasons comics were hated in nazi germany.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
newman also integrates the basic superman lore pretty well here, everything is recognizable. a ‘man of steel,’ ‘the man of tomorrow,’ ‘curt kessler’ (which, by the way, is way more creative than dc’s ‘karl kant’) is clark kent, the ‘green stuff’ is kryptonite, so on
Tumblr media Tumblr media
newman also isn’t afraid to get dirty with the mythos, unlike the comics which like to play it safe with this (up to and including never talking about the holocaust at all). the johnathan and martha kent analogues of “ubermensch” aren’t the kindly couple that they should be. because this isn’t them and we're not supposed to like them. johann beats his adopted son and curt grows up arrogant. luise lang, the lois analogue, is a snotty propagandist that curt describes in ideologically typical misogynistic terms (another thing to note down dc, nazis did not respect women) who commits suicide to avoid being raped by the red army.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's also something else that's interesting, the commentary on how harmful propaganda and journalism can be when serving a purpose. its implied a lot in here that the 'supervillains' that curt kessler/übermensch faces are actually all staged by the nazis, or if they're genuine (like the golem), their intentions are twisted to serve the bigger narrative.
curt kessler/übermensch is a state propagandist like luise lang was. the 'tages welt,' daily planet analogue in this story, sounds a lot like a version of der sturmer. he writes his own propaganda narratives to prop up his übermensch persona and vilifies innocent people in the process. the targets of nazi ideology get the names of villains from 1920s german fiction and they're like dogwhistles in itself if you know the context. "orlok" was a vampire that looked uncomfortably similar to anti-semitic caricatures, "mabuse" was a hypnotist "master of disguise" who "operated through a network of agents," characters co-opted and then twisted by nazism in-story. in real life we also have this with racists adopting "sh****k" as a slur from the shakespeare character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
newman also throws a curveball with that whole ‘nazi superhero who actually turns out to be good all along’ or whatever the shit that trope is. whatever. kessler apparently ‘defects,’ like he says here
Tumblr media
but before that, he said this.
Tumblr media
dude’s the same. sorry guys, no redemption arc here. this becomes relevant later.
kessler still blames "mabuse" for pornography, jazz, cabarets, things that defined progressive weimar germany before the nazis took over and shut it all down. again. another aspect taken from real-life history. and since a "red skull" is also name-dropped here, i'm also thinking that the "hydra" reference in this refers to the marvel organization of the same name.
you know. the one with tentacle iconography, the secret society that's framed in the mcu as controlling the world, starting wars and infiltrating governments everywhere to install global totalitarianism. which makes me wonder what kind of writers at marvel thought nazi germany would accept an organization that exemplifies the kind of fake "international conspiracy" they were railing against but that's another conversation. see here.
blumenthal recalls a time when he was a child in germany who naively hero-worshipped kessler/übermensch because of the propaganda around him. he wished he could fly and he wore a black blanket like a cape. while he was young a rabbi created a golem (the figure in jewish mythology made of clay) who was killed by kessler, and blumenthal swallowed the propaganda. even when his anti-semitic classmates aped kessler and beat him up.
Tumblr media
kessler obviously doesn’t give a shit, he’s still brainwashed no matter how he tries to wave it off. he doesn’t care about the tattoo. instead he talks about using his x-ray vision to look at women’s breasts. like real-life racists confronted with their own wrongdoings kessler also resorts to whataboutism and goes “your family is dead but so is my whole planet”.
and he also says he’s only locking himself up because of his guilt. not actually over the atrocities of nazism. it’s that nazi germany is gone and so is his planet so he has nothing else to do and he doesn’t want to do anything. that’s it.
blumenthal retorts with this, which is just great in itself. im not going to outline it, newman does it pretty good already
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is one of the things i really liked. because it’s important and more importantly, relevant!! it’s so relevant because kim newman is fucking right. im reiterating that everything about the world in that second image is true.
i was a kid when charlottesville happened. tmi but that whole time is a blur. when i got older and learned about things, i remember thinking that maybe after that, we would take a good hard look at ourselves and just try to find out where we went wrong.
did we maybe have a history of being eugenicist slaveowning imperialists in the past who inspired nazi polices and still rallied around the flag and the military. did racism and nazism happen to run deep in america before 2017.
why were children and young adults so vulnerable and still are vulnerable to the alt-right pipeline, what are we putting out in media that could be desensitizing them to nazism. what kind of message are we sending when we don’t cover it in detail, and leave them to figure out nazism from shitty comics, or movies.
yeah. the majority of people ever asked that.
here’s what they actually did. especially in art and media, and im going to say, with dc since this is relevant to the image. they doubled down on some of the societal shit that led to that in the first place
you wanna know what the cw, bunch of braindead idiots, did right after charlottesville? pretty much the entire thing from the last paragraph, except with some vanilla bullshit because of course the arrowverse can’t ever portray nazism correctly even if they tried.
there’s an article that covers their failure in detail and also a reddit post which, obviously, some weirdos in the comments are brushing off. and it’s also not coincidental that a comic series came after this and cited the political climate. again. a bunch of important dc people were involved in promoting this. phil jimenez in particular also has a problematic history with depicting modern neo-nazism. grown adults put money into this. their actors and their fans supported them.
want proof?
Tumblr media
mmm. alright smart guy. here’s that “different set of ideals” for you.
Tumblr media
yeah, apparently they didn’t think through the consequences of a world where the fucking dirlewanger brigade would be celebrated as heroes.
you know what they actually cared about? some fucking stupid comic issue from the 1970s that was suddenly relevant because everyone felt the need to deny our own nazi-sympathizing rotten history and pin it somewhere else, rather than actually take a step back and evaluate where we went wrong as a society.
and actually they essentially made radicalization easier. they showed this bullshit to kids and basement-dwelling adults who don’t know anything about the world and only care about their typical comic high. how do they fucking sleep at night knowing that they’ve whitewashed real life atrocities?
they still are doing that. they casually throw around the words “hitler” and “nazi” to the point where it fucking means nothing. they’re using exploitative images of concentration camps just to get a rise out of people without ever covering their themes seriously. and you wanna know the worst thing about that? only a few people are calling this out. everyone else? nah they’re ready to consume that because it doesn’t matter to them like it does for some people.
in the story blumenthal believes that, without kessler existing, the ‘fire’ won’t start up again. this comes when nazism and genocidal neo-fascism are resurging and the israel bit is also pretty relevant today. like in real life the kids are ignorant because all they know about nazi germany and world war ii is from kessler. again. this man is a living symbol of nazism who has media getting made about him.
blumenthal’s right. because the world actually doesn’t need kessler and it’s better off without him. he passes a kryptonite suicide pill encased with lead, which kessler can bite through. and he gives him a choice.
living swastika kessler who has nothing to live for and is more of a problem than an actual help to humanity, bites the pill and kills himself. that’s it. he dies. his only worthwhile achievement is sucking it up and dying like a human man.
he’s dead. now finally humanity can start to heal.
so to round it all off basically. i think this book is part of a lesson. about swallowing that bitter pill that you don’t want to face and realizing, maybe there’s something problematic how we portray and in a way, whitewash nazism to the population through the comic industry. because the golden age, nobody actually knew about the holocaust when they were writing the whole “punching nazis” schtick. the comics were wartime, jingoistic and often racist propaganda.
and yet!! we’re still doing it. thanks to some escapist tradition that actually does more harm than good. because we actually know about the holocaust, we have the internet and the ability to push ourselves to research. and we don’t. and i think tbh, that is much worse. that the people with money and platforms just don’t care.
it’s in other media too, mostly movies.
chaplin got it right, he said he would’ve never made the great dictator if he knew about the final solution like we did today.
spielberg couldn’t include nazis in indiana jones after making schindler’s list and im pretty sure he said he disowned it, but. it looks like everyone decided to shit on that because of nostalgia.
jojo rabbit was originally adapted from a novel where the protagonist was an unrepentant scumfuck HJ who gaslit, controlled and raped the jewish woman hiding in his house. and for some reason, people hate the novel. why? because it rightfully doesn’t give them the cozy feelgood feeling that the film did. it rightfully portrays a brainwashed child who never got out, was never interested in getting out and grew up to be, you guessed it, a fucking nazi. those jojo rabbit viewers were actually looking forward to this before they got the hard reality. who the fuck in their right mind would ever consider nazism ‘feelgood’?
and i think that’s another thing we need to get in our heads especially with radicalization. tw isis execution being brainwashed as a kid is not funny, it’s not childish or anything to make fun of, and it’s nothing to make a wes anderson movie about. you are being exploited and taken advantage of by people who know you’re angry about things beyond your control and they are molding you and you believe everything. and the ensuing trauma if you ever get out, ends up being a bitch because your brain was still developing and now it sticks for the rest of your life. yeah try taking that in, taika.
so. by all means. wise up and kill the living swastikas wherever you find them. it could be anything, but. get rid of it. because we are going to be so fucked up as humanity otherwise.

For anyone wondering what the Gruncharov folks are talking about. Here is a bit of an overview I wrote on my commute. I checked all the posts here to be sure I remembered things correctly. Some are definitely from my own memory, but with The Meat Scene not being on any streaming services right now I'm going off of my own memory as well...
The Meat Scene
Most are talking about the 1999 cult classic "the meat scene". A sitcom that had a relatively short run (especially compared to other 90s sitcoms). The Peter Steele Kitty poster is part of it! Also the show Breaking Bad was heavily inspired by it. While there is a crime undertone with the Heroin dealing etc., it is mostly defined as a dark comedy. Some episodes are more light hearted than others e.g the one were Mike and Kurt go to the grocery strore. It features the famous BBQ scene(s) and even features same sex couples (huge at the time!), like Mike Patton the undercover DEA officer with his partner Jonny Greenwood. As well as Layne Staley and Colin Greenwood. Kurt and Layne both got into the Heroin business after they found their own Dealer Mark Lanegan dead in his apartment. The two didn't know what to do, because if they would've called the police it would've been a huge media circus. So the pair decides to get rid of the body and take his place (The bathtub scene in Breaking Bad is definitely inspired by this one in the meat scene).
The Comics
They are light hearted and focus on the BBQ scenes of the OG show. After all the group of musicians often times come together to BBQ. So while there are undertones of crime, these are overshadowed by the comedic element. After all it is focusing on the BBQs were they've got a lot of guest stars making cameos (see the pizza delivery dude being Billie Joe Armstrong. Jerry Cantrell and Kim Gordon showing up on a horse etc.).
Breaking Band
Set in 1993, it's basically Breaking Bad but with the 90s musicians cast of the Meat scene. Definitely darker and less funny than all the other things. Great Plot tho!!!
(I hope I got it all right! I thought with people being unsure what Gruncharov is and it consisting of multiple things, we needed a bit of write up. )
Thank you this is lovely, and clears a lot of things up (hopefully for all our Gruncharov artists and writers)! It gets more confusing with every passing day.

Can you please write a short scene wherein Joe tries Rachel's cooking? Thanks!
Rachel Morgan is a lot of things. She is smart, beautiful, and a hell of a spy. She is a wonderful mother and an even better friend. But a cook, she is anything but.
Matt used to tease her saying that she could burn water. He tried teaching her once upon a time but to no avail. There was always something that she did wrong. She didn't put enough butter in the pan. She burned the chicken. She forgot to set the timer for the rice. Cooking was not her specialty.
Cammie tried to help her in the kitchen plenty of times and Rachel refused. If she could heat it up in the microwave, she was set. And thus, the famous Sunday night dinners were born.
Joe knew Rachel couldn't cook. He remembered there were nights that Matt would call him saying it was a 911 and that typically meant: bring a burger to the house ASAP.
Rachel tried her hardest to make nice meals for her family and friends. It just never worked. And tonight, was one of those nights.
Cammie was supposed to be flying in tomorrow from a mission with Zach in Ireland and Rachel wanted some practice.
So, Rachel was trying her hand at a chicken parmesan. She was boiling the water for the noodles and cutting the chicken when a knock on the door made her pause. She hesitated.
"Come in!" she called.
Joe pushed open the door as Rachel began putting some seasonings onto the chicken. He couldn't help the laugh that came out, watching her drop the chicken into the pan. She squealed as the hot grease hit her hands.
Joe closed the door behind him and rushed over to her place at the stove. He scanned her head to toe, trying to see if she was badly hurt. Rachel only laughed at his fussing.
"I'm okay, Joe. I swear," She reassured him.
Joe put his hands up in mock surrender. He glanced around the small kitchen. It was almost like a tornado had swept through. Flour, spices, grease, and paper towels lined the countertops. There were wrappers and plates everywhere. Joe fought the cringe that was threatening to overtake his features.
He backed up and went to take his shoes off. He sat on the couch, unlacing his shoes. He took off his jacket and hung it up before venturing back to the bedroom. He didn't take too long, changing into an old shirt and shorts. He came back to the kitchen, his feet silent on the ground.
He came up behind Rachel as she plated the noodles and chicken. He wrapped his arms around her and stared at the mess of meat on the plate. He pursed his lips. "Darling, is that edible?" He asked, resting his chin against her shoulder.
Rachel laughed and shook her head. "It's not pink, I checked,"
Joe nodded, slightly concerned with the lack of coloring and breading on the chicken. He grabbed the two plates and brought them over to the table.
He listened to her turn off the stove and set some dishes into the sink before she came to sit with him at the table. He got up again and grabbed some cups and some lemonade from the fridge. He poured the liquid into their glasses and then sat down, his stomach growling.
At least it smelled good...
Joe picked up his fork and knife and cut into the chicken. And stifled a laugh.
Rachel eyed him over her plate. Neither of them said a word. Joe chewed. And chewed. And chewed...
And then spit it out onto his plate.
Rachel sighed and bit her lip. "That bad huh?"
Joe frowns and rushes to reassure her. "It's not bad! I swear! It's just---"
"It's bad." Rachel said, setting her fork down on her plate. She shakes her head and sighs. "There's a pizza in the freezer..." She all but grumbles.
Joe laughs and gets up from his seat. He rounds the table and wraps his arms around her from behind. He presses a kiss to her cheek and gives her a little reassuring squeeze before rushing into the kitchen.
"Next time, lessen the amount of pepper and garlic... And cook it a little bit longer..." He tells her, making Rachel sigh. She knew this had been a bad idea.
So instead of a nice dinner of chicken parmesan and pasta, it was a nice dinner of frozen pizza and lemonade.
Which was way better than the chicken parm. Even though Rachel wouldn't admit it.

Grandpa Joe’s (Final Rose)
Diana loved Grandpa Joe’s. He made the best pizza in the whole world, and his restaurant was only a few blocks from her house! He never looked at her funny either, not even when she ordered enough food for three people. He just smiled and told her he was happy that someone loved his food so much.
He was getting a bit old, but his son was going to take over after he retired, and he made really great food too. Although Diana couldn’t go every night, she usually managed to wheedle her parents into taking them to Grandpa Joe’s once a fortnight.
It was a nice place, all warm and cosy. Every time they went, everyone there was smiling and talking. It wasn’t quiet and stuffy like some other places Diana had been to. It was a place where people could enjoy themselves and not have to worry about being too formal.
As she got older, she kept right on going to Grandpa Joe’s. By some miracle, the restaurant just get right on going too. After Grandpa Joe’s son retired, his grandson took over, and so on and so on right up until the day Diana finally passed away. In fact, a pizza from the restaurant was one of the meals she enjoyed in the last week of her life.
Joe XXII glanced up as one of the servers rushed into the kitchen.
“What’s wrong?”
“You will never guess who just walked in,” the server blurted.
“Try me.”
“Her Imperial Majesty Averia VII just walked in with her whole family.”
“Ah.” Joe chuckled. “I remember her wife, the bearer of Ragnarok, visiting as often as she could when she spent some time on Remnant as a teenager.” He grinned. “Maybe we’ll even get a picture to add to the wall.”
The ‘wall’ was a special place in the restaurant where pictures of famous customers had been placed. Sitting in pride of place was a picture of a young Diana Yun-Farron standing next to Uncle Joe while eyeing a pizza that seemed almost as big as she was.

Hutt Nation
That episode of family guy was based on the reality one landowner faced in Australia, where claiming a legal loophole, set up the micronation of Hutt.
Some say this is the origin of the famous pizza franchise.
Australia never seems to have acknowledged the micronation as a separate entity, and it seems to be on the same level of what Disney World used to be before DeSantis took all it's freedom to operate as an individual state away.
Hutt Nation's main economical export was, of course, tourism. The kind of like, going to see the world's largest softball.
It was certainly a plot of land on the continent Australia.
Unlike Peteora, however, Hutt Nation seems to have inspired more micronations to declare independence in Australia. It stands to be known whether or not we'll be witness to the great Australian civil war.
With the world the state it is in, and using the middle east as a guidebook, I would say; it's only a matter of time before individual Petorias start fighting over Joe's pool out of a sense of entitlement.
