Yes, hello. I have something for the DC Comics Tumblr sphere. A fire has been lit inside me that cannot be doused. Herein lies an 18-page essay on Tom Taylor's recent ongoing comic with as much reference images and cited works. Do with this as you please.

In Future State: Suicide Squad #1 2021 a trio of Earth 3 aliens appears up against Amanda Waller is Justice League, they are quickly dispatched but maybe we can learn some more about them by looking deeper. For example the classic outfit on Sinestro matches up with his later appearance on Earth 3 when he was with Weaponer-666 Aka the ex Power Ring and held Jordan of this world. Everything we know about him we knew from his second appearance but Mongal hasn't appeared again, alvaree her appearing at tongue could mean that her relationship with Mongol is the inverse from the main Earth. There have been and will continue to be many Mongols but there is only one Mongal, on Earth 3 there may be many Mongals and onr Mongol instead. Brainiac does not match with any of his previous appearances, but heroic brainiac may be defined by him wanting to save dying civilizations and him joining this team or even being on Earth could be because of Ultraman destroying his ship containing them all.

OKAY THIS IS A BIG ONE, just answer the ones you want to :D
DC (preferably Batman or Green Arrow or Superfam but actually everything) - games, comics, movies, books, fandom
what is your (can be more than one each category):
favourite fan AU
favourite headcanon
favourite female character
favourite male character
favourite comic
favourite canon AU (you know all these Future State and Kingdom Come and Injustice and Arkham verse and all that!!!)
favourite ship (IF you have one, otherwise the ones you can tolerate)
favourite death (if the character died more than in one universe or more than once, specify which death)
favourite powerset
favourite resurrection (LOL, same with #8)
favourite AU villain/antagonist (those who aren't villains but you imagine would be cool villains in your opinion)
favourite canon villan/antagonist (if characters like Jason or Talia then specify which plotlines/comics)
favourite DC loser.
sorry for bad English!!!! have a good day/night
Oh boy, that’s… that’s actually really hard for me. I have a hard time picking favorites, because I generally love things for very different reasons. I know much more clearly what I dislike when I see it; enjoying things is sorta my default state, y’know?
Like, take the AU question. I’d be hard pressed to tell you whether a good Reverse Robins setup was something I liked better than, say, @jube-art’s Superfam/Batfam role-swap (which, if you haven’t seen it, go check it out!)
I’m also working my way through canon chronologically, and am still in the early/mid-90s, so there’s a lot of characters I haven’t officially gotten to, and a lot of stories I haven’t gotten the chance to really dig into yet. (I made it to Knightfall, realized I hadn’t put any of the buildup to that arc in my comic library, and decided to go back and read Barbara’s time with the Suicide Squad instead.) I don’t feel comfortable planting a flag on this until… oh, at least until ~2006, probably. (Which, given just how many books/characters suddenly got added in the 90s, will probably take a while.)
(There are also lots of characters who have so much potential in their backstory/power set, but who never got to use them to their full potential. Or who only had the cool parts of their backstory tacked on as an obvious retcon in the process of writing them out of the story, because the fans were vocally upset about them, meaning they never got the exploration any of those story ideas deserved.) (I have a special level of ire for power sets that are really cool on a surface level, but where the creators added just one power too many to stop them from being fully interesting. For example, Menagerie’s bugs having mind control properties overcomplicates her too much, in my opinion. Or—if you’ll let me hop over to Marvel—a character like Alpha who has all the “standard” superpowers, but only one at a time? What makes that interesting is having to choose between being super-strong or invulnerable or super-fast (etc.) therefore this character should not have ranged attack options built into said power set; it disincentivizes him from ever getting up-close with enemies, forcing the writer to choose between having the character be stupid or having the character never use the interesting elements of their powers. (…I mean, Alpha being stupid is kinda the point of his plot, but you see what I’m getting at, right?))
I will say, I adored Jason’s post-Crisis Robin run (in both Batman series, though for very different reasons) and so far very little has brought me as much joy as reading DC’s Detective Comics from that time period! And those few pages of Dan Mora’s B&W cyberpunk short that went around recently had me absolutely frothing with excitement for the possibilities that verse holds. And Jason being Tim’s Robin brings me endless joy, which neither canon nor jerkfaces will take from me.
(Aaaaaaaand while shipping isn’t the catharsis I come to comics for (thank gods, basically every canon ship I’ve witnessed thus far has been awful in motion even when their potential is off the charts,) I can actually blame DCEU SuperBat for getting me into this whole mess in the first place. Blame @susiecarter, whose fics I found immediately after watching someone do a deep-dive analysis of everything that went wrong with BvS, which I paused when I thought, “Huh, these are actually all really good points… I bet fanfiction has done this exact story, but with much better execution, recognizable characterization, and probably a hell of a lot gayer. Let’s go check.”)

MRW I remember that Jeremy Adams wrote the Future State Suicide Squad issues with Alinta as the Flash, so not only does he know she exists but he wrote her (and wrote her very well) and now there's a very real possibility of Alinta showing up in OMW

The Nun II is already the highest-grossing horror film of the year
Tumblr media
For the third consecutive week The Nun II leads the American box office, earning another 8.4 million dollars in a very weak weekend at the box office in the United States. In this way, the film has already achieved $69.2 million in the United States and a total of $204 million worldwide. A figure that makes this title the highest-grossing horror film of the year, surpassing the 188 million earned by Insidious: The Red Door or the 168 million earned by Scream VI.
The Nun II is a horror movie that was released in 2023 and is a sequel to the 2018 movie The Nun. The movie is part of "The Conjuring" universe and is directed by Michael Chavez, who has directed other movies in the same universe. The movie has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. Some reviewers have praised the movie for being a fun and entertaining sequel, while others have criticized it for being boring and inconsistent. Overall, it seems that opinions on the movie are divided, and viewers may have different experiences depending on their preferences for horror movies and their familiarity with The Conjuring universe.
youtube
The Nun II is a supernatural horror movie that follows Sister Irene, the protagonist from the first movie, as she investigates the murder of a priest in France in 1956. The plot of the movie is centered around the demon nun Valak, who Sister Irene once again confronts. The movie is set four years after the events of the first movie. The film may also connect The Nun universe back to the main chronology of The Conjuring universe, establishing what happens prior to Valak's appearance in the second Conjuring film. The movie is directed by Michael Chaves and written by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing. The film also features new characters, including Antoinette, the 14-year-old leader of the group of bullies at St. Mary’s School who torments Sophie and others. The movie was released on September 8, 2023, and is produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema.
Storm Reid is the actress who plays Sister Debra in The Nun II. She is a new addition to the cast of the movie and portrays a nun-in-training who gets caught up in Valak's evil plans. Storm Reid is an Emmy-nominated actress known for her roles in movies such as A Wrinkle in Time and The Suicide Squad.
Sister Debra is a significant character in The Nun II for several reasons. She is a nun-in-training who struggles with her faith, which is a central theme of the movie. Sister Irene helps her to find her faith and embrace her role as a nun. She witnesses Irene's confrontation with Valak and survives the ordeal, which strengthens her faith and resolve. She plays a key role in the movie's ending, which involves a twist that sets up the future of The Conjuring universe. Overall, Sister Debra's character serves as a foil to Sister Irene, highlighting the importance of faith and the struggle to maintain it in the face of evil. Her character also helps to expand the world of "The Conjuring" universe and set up future movies in the franchise.

DC STUDIOS SLATE - FEBRUARY 2023
A bit late but here are all the updates from the new DC Chapter 1 announcement and what’s to come after the DCEU reset, which you can watch here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY8XcmrIujE
~~~General notes
-Last month the entire DCEU (DC Extended Universe, DC's live action movies) was announced for a reset (no more Gal Gadot Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill Superman, etc; there were a lot of changes you can look up)
-DC's CEOs are James Gunn and Peter Safran; Gunn (who worked on Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy") is the one heading the reset and rearranging of the DCEU
-Gunn states that DC has been disconnected from film/television/gaming/animation for a long time; he aims to connect them more and create character/actor casting consistency that works within one story (presumably the DCEU)
-Anything outside of this (Matt Reeves' “The Batman”, Todd Phillip’s “Joker”, "Teen Tians Go!", etc) will be clearly labeled as DC elseward (not part of the DCEU)
-Gunn and Safran have begun mapping an 8-10 year plan of DC's future projects; this first chapter is called "Gods and Monsters"
-There will be 4 projects coming out over the next year
~~~2023 Future Projects
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Gunn states Shazam has been in its own corner of the DCEU but will now connect directly into:
The Flash
The Flash will reset the entire DC universe
No mention of whether Ezra Miller will continue their role as Flash or not, though there is reports that Gunn and Safran are open to Miller's return
Blue Beetle
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Will lead directly into the Chapter 1 projects
~~~First Look at Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters (not the full slate)
Creature Commandos
Animated TV series
Gunn plans to have characters move in and out of animated works, hopefully voiced by the same actor who plays their live action counterpart (think if Jason Mamoa kept doing his live action Aquaman stuff, as well as voice acted in whatever animated/gaming works the Aquaman character appeared in)
Waller
Live action TV series
Story of Amanda Waller (the one who created the Suicide Squad; she's like DC's Nick Fury)
Waller will team up with members from the Peacemaker franchise
Will be played by Viola Davis; story created by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol)
Superman: Legacy
Film
Gunn says this will be "the true beginning of the DCU"
Written by James Gunn
Will release in theaters July 11, 2025
Lanterns
HBO live action TV series
Story of John Stewart and Hal Jordan (a few other Lanterns will be peppered in)
Terrestrial-based show (almost like "True Detective" according to Gunn) where Hal and John will act as space-cops watching over precinct Earth; they will discover a terrifying mystery that will tie into the largest story of the DCU
The Authority
Film
Based on the WildStorm characters, who will be brought into the DCU and interact with all the primary DCU characters
Group of heroes who think the world is broken, and will fix it by any means necessary
Gunn's passion project that's a "different look at superheroes"
Paradise Lost
Live action TV series
Story of Paradise Island/Themyscira, the birthplace of Wonder Woman
"Like Game of Thrones with Westeros, but with the inhabitants of Paradise Island"
The Brave and the Bold
Film
Introduction to the DCU's Batman
Story of Batman and Damian al Ghul, based on Grant Morrison's comic run
Damian is an assassin and Bruce Wayne's biological son, who he tries to get in line; this is the story of them and "the beginning of the Batfamily in the DCU"
Booster Gold
HBO live action TV series
Booster Gold is a "loser" from the future who uses future technology to become a present-day superhero to gain love and admiration
"The superhero story of imposter syndrome"
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
Film
Will turn Tom King's comic run (under the same name) into a "big science fiction epic"
Supergirl, unlike her cousin, was raised on a floating chunk of the destroyed planet Krypton after witnessing everyone around her perish; this film will explore her as a jaded character
Swamp Thing
Film
Very dark horror story about the origins of Swamp Thing
Will be outside of the DCU yet still feed into those stories
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Personal Opinions
-I was never invested much in the DCU, just never seemed as appealing to me as Marvel, but if I hear good reviews I'll give it another shot
-Very relieved to hear the non-DCU stuff is still happening since that's where my DC interests lie
-If "The Flash" resets the DCU its a must watch if you want to keep up after this point, but if Ezra Miller is in it I don't want to watch; that mf should literally be in prison why are they still not fired (they replaced Gal, Henry, possibly Jason, but NOT Ezra? Tf?)
-I don't know much about Blue Beetle but I've seen a lot of hype (I'm also a fan of Jaime Reyes, BB's protegee) so I'll probably check it out (cheers to the BB x Booster Gold shippers lmao happy for y'all)
-I love animated stuff and would love if more comic characters got attention instead of the same lineup we always get so I'll be keeping an eye out for Creature Commandos, the characters look cool (plus its animated). Speaking of underrated character getting a spotlight...
-I AM SO FUCKING HYPED FOR WALLER. She's a hardass recruiter like Nick Fury and Viola Davis is an acting god so I am very pleased to see her getting her own stuff (plus more Peacemaker crew! But if y'all overshadow this series about a plus sized black woman to focus on the white boys in Peacemaker I'm throwing you off a pier); its also got Watchmen and Doom Patrol people working on it omfg its gonna be so good I am vibrating rn
-another Superman movie, they better make it stand out (I heard it delves more into Supes exploring his Kryptonian heritage beyond the powers which will be interesting, especially considering he was originally a metaphor for immigration rights)
-LANTERNS. L A N T E R N S. JOHN STEWART MY FUCKING BELOVED HE'S BACK. no seriously growing up I adored the animated Justice League series and John and Shiera were my favorite part of it, I'm so happy to have John back (also don't know much about the Lantern Corps so it'll be fun for me to learn more); let it be known that if Shiera x John makes a comeback I will actually disintegrate and ascend into Themyscira. SpEAkiNg oF-
-no amount of capslock keyboard smashes can convey to you how much of a slut I am for Wonder Woman and the Amazonians. It simply cannot be done. Any excuse for more Amazons I will latch onto like orphans to Batman, I NEED THIS (plus new amazons maybe? more amazona? Hippolyta? Artemis?? Nubia? yARA-)
-Midnighter. Apollo. Midnighter and Apollo. I would scream but my dog is present (seriously I'm gonna be so annoying about them when this drops, I've waited YEARS for these two). As for the rest I'm not as familiar with them but similar sentiment to Commandos, I'm excited to learn about new characters
-as a batfam stan first and a person second, I'm always nervous about how DC will handle them. I'm hoping it won't just be Son of Batman in (presumably) live action (also side-eyeing Gunn for calling Damian "Batman's actual son" like the whole ass rest of the batfam ain't right there); I'm also wondering why they're completely skipping over all the other robins/batfam and going straight to the current one, some of the others are very underrated and deserve to have their origins expanded on (mainly Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, Duke Thomas and Tim Drake for on screen stuff); kind of a let down for me that there's no other news but can't say I'm surprised
-ok ngl the pitch for Booster Gold was strong and I am honestly invested (that last line was raw); rip BG stans he literally called your boy a loser im so sorry lmao (but lets be real that's exactly why you love him isn't it?)
-I'm used to a Kara that's very preppy and reactive so seeing her being jaded is gonna be interesting, I'm very excited and might honestly even check out Tom King's source material
-I know next to nothing of Swamp Thing so this'll be a nice way for me and others to get to know the character

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ᕙ(`▿´)ᕗ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
"....a third will die. After four years most will be dead, but those who endure will be amongst the most capable soldiers alive. Now having heard this dismal state of affairs, whoever still wishes to put their life on the line and join us...remain here. But first, ask yourself, can you give your hearts? Can you give everything for humanity?"
Commander Erwin eyed the crowd of tired cadets. "That is all."
You sucked in a breath as soldier after soldier turned their backs. Scanning the crowd of moving bodies, an unsurprising few remained still. Mikasa and Armin stood their ground, following their suicidal maniac all the way to the grave.
Others shook in their boots. Jean looked like he might puke, the idiot. Your feet nearly took you with the others, begging you to obey your father and join the MPs.
In a way, it would be easier. You could live a life you'd known forever, no threat of uncertainty, no whispers of death at every corner. Shackles and bruises might weigh you down, but at least you'd keep breathing, isn't that worth the burden?
You shifted, turning your back to the others.
******
The battle of Trost ended with no means for celebration. Those who barely survived had not a moment of peace, thrown straight into a new nightmare. Names had to be taken, the dead accounted for. Rotting bodies could not be left in the streets. Comrades must be buried.
Relief was few soldier's companion that day, but many hands held grief. It's a lumbering thing, as big as a Titan itself, but they carried it together. When one's strength gave out, another lent their own. Most had never shouldered something so heavy.
You were bad company to the many, even worse to the few. Grief crawled under your skin so long ago you'd carved it out a home. Perhaps you lacked empathy for those newly acquainted. Eventually, you knew they would all cut with the same knife.
A rag hugged your nose as you walked streets littered with lifeless eyes and bloodstained corpses. Around every corner, you were met with a new familiar sight. Dull faces were given names and you were thanked by those who would spread the word.
It wasn't until you came across Jean staring at what used to be Marco that your chest caved.
You had stood between them at the end of cadet training, proud and smiling. Six, seven, and eight. They could've been lifelong friends. You had actually looked forward to that future, ignorant to assume you'd found a safe haven. 104th cadets turned MPs...
It seemed only two of you would have that chance—yet another ignorant assumption.
A doctor lectured Jean for his tears as your own threatened to fall. Your throat caught on the back half of her calm, monotonous words, "Please, son. You understand?"
It was a lifeless plea. She didn't want to be there, no one wanted to be there. Duty, promise, and expectation. That's what kept you all in that nightmare.
"Marco..." you spoke up before Jean could muster the courage. "Marco Bodt, captain of squad 19 and a member of the 104th cadet core."
Jean followed your voice, eyes full of pain pleading for answers. Yours could only find the bloody pavement.
"Thank you, cadet." The doctor reduced your fallen soldier, your friend, to pen on paper. She could have been a robot, emotionless as you'd been until now. As she walked away, she spoke words you'd heard from other robots, rehearsed no doubt. "I appreciate the help, continue."
Jean took a few steps toward you, voice shaking, "How did—someone must have seen..."
Your eyes shifted to Marco's half-freckled face, taking in the stubborn reality you'd stumbled upon. It morphed into a new one, or an old one. Golden eyes turned red and short hair grew long, but blood remained blood. You tugged your eyes away, finding more comfort in your dirt-covered boots.
He continued, voice faltering on each thought, "Marco...how...y/n—"
You huffed out a short breath, squeezing your eyes shut before looking Jean dead in the eye. "She was right," you flatlined, a tear escaping. "We lament later, right now we have jobs to do."
The furrow of his brow begged for your compassion, but it was lost. You turned on your heels, memories of Marco's words biting at them.
It wasn't sorrow you battled anymore, no, that had already made its home.
It was fear. A flirtatious thing, a lover who never learned when to quit. To you, fear had always been a man with whom you'd grown up. He came when he wanted, left when he pleased, and depending on the day he'd take the breath from your lungs along with him.
This fear was different. Not a man, but a monster. It engulfed you the way it did everyone else. People you cared for were taken, not by one, but by dozens. Blood didn't cover the floor boards, but the streets of an entire district. Mothers, children, friends, soldiers...
You couldn't breathe.
Ducking into an empty house, you ripped off the mask and gloves they'd given you. Diseases could be damned if you died of hyperventilation. Your bare hand pressed between your collarbones as you closed your eyes, trying to take deep breaths. Pressure welled up, tears escaped without remorse.
You didn't have time for this. Feelings were for later, you had a job to do, you had a duty to those who had fallen. Your lips trembled, eyes twitched. Anger bubbled in your throat until deep breaths no longer sufficed.
A scream fell from your lips as you turned to the door and pounded your fist into it. Punch after punch, you couldn't stop until blood covered your split knuckles. You collapsed to the floor, sobs wracking your body so violently you thought you might puke. Your bloody hand covered your mouth, muffling your own cries.
The battle was over, but your war had only just begun.
*******
Fellow soldiers moved past, ones you'd laughed and fought with, kicking up dust with no remorse for their desertion. Setting your jaw, you took a deep breath and turned back around.
Everything else be damned, this was your decision.
