Like yadda yadda modern interpretations and stuff but like, the quote is

“I wish I were a fair maiden, then I would woo him [Lancelot]”

There is some context to this, and based on the context it can be debated whether or not Gawain was trans, but still. Oh but on that note.

Gawain is absolutely bisexual. Regardless of the context, if you’re a man and unironically express a desire to sleep with what is clearly a man, then you are some flavour of gay. And Gawain, the ladies man of Arthurian myth, expressed a desire to sleep with the handsome knight. He is at the very least bisexual, probably poly or pan given how he’s slept with magical creatures and loved a wide range of women.

Merlin and Arthur were a couple.

Leon had heard them in the armory, Arthur was talking with a seductive voice about Merlin needing to polish his sword. The knight had almost died of laughter, but he didn't want them to notice him, so he almost bit out a piece of fabric from his cape.

Nobody of their close friends was surprised about it, even though they weren't told. But they had caught them on numerous occasions, which was equally funny and annoying:

Gwaine had stumbled over them in the night, he had... lent something out of the palace's kitchen and wanted to get to his chambers as quick as possible. Crossing a corner he had seen them, Merlin pressed against a pillar, Arthur against his chest. He did take another way.

Percival only wanted to take care of his horse, cleaning it and playing around when he heard two other people "playing around" in the straw. When he dared to take a glance he had seen Merlin and Arthur, then he left the stable with a very much noticeable blush.

Elyan was on his way for visiting Gwen when he saw Merlin and Arthur dissapearing in a room strictly for servants. He wondered and walked after them, but after seeing what they actually did in there he continued the way to his sister as if nothing had happened.

When you wanted to visit Arthur as friend, you heard voices inside his room and your curious nature took over:

"Mh, Arthur"

"Come on, Merlin, you're a servant - I can punish you as long as I want and how I want."

"Yes, Sire."

Only the following rather passionate moan and "Good boy" from Arthur kept you away from storming in there and defending your friend.

Lancelot also wanted to get to Gwen one day and met Arthur and Merlin on the way. They exchanged some greetings and Lancelot remembered that he wanted to ask Arthur when their next training was, so he turned around and saw the king grabbing his servant's ass. Gwen had to take care of him afterwards.

The knights all had their trauma now and got together one evening for a kind of group therapy session.

"We can't continue on like this!", Leon said "We have to tell them that we know they're together."

"We should rather tell them to keep their dicks in their pants for once", (Y/N) mumbled. Gwaine and Percival were nodding furiously at that.

"For once, I have to say that (Y/N) is right. How would it help to tell them we know they're a couple?", Elyan thought out loud.

"Maybe then we could talk to them about their sexual activities and how they're affecting us.", Lancelot argumented.

"And the truth is best usually.", Gwen, as their certified therapist, said "I'm sure that they will think about their actions when you tell them how they make you feel."

"Okay, but still, who's going to go up to them and say 'Hey lads, just so you know: We know you're a couple and we don't appreciate you fucking at every corner in the castle, please stop it, thank you.'?", Gwaine asked in his typical Gwaine-manners.

"Now we know at least who definetly won't.", (Y/N) said dryly.

"I could do it", Lancelot suggested "I humbly think that I'm the most sensitive out of us knights."

"I think that would be a great idea.", Gwen agreed with her boyfriend (also no secret but not because of the same reasons like Arthur's and Merlin's).

"Yeah, thank you, Lancelot", Percival said, relief in his face.

"Will see you guys tomorrow", (Y/N) got up from his chair and stretched his hand over to Gwaine "Come on, dear. I wanna fuck in a servant's room too" Gwaine laughed while the others were shouting after them of 'not wanting to know', 'not taking their trauma seriously' and 'please no taking of each other in a servants' room'.

You two were walking hand-in-hand from Gwen's house to the castle. After a while Gwaine asked: "Were you serious?" You showed a seductive smile in return "I'm always serious when I talk about you taking me" A hungry growl left Gwaine's lips and he slammed you against the next house-wall, kissing you fiercly.

You would've continued making-out and not caring about where whom took whom, but a rumble from inside startled both of you and you ran off laughing when you heard the voice of an old woman saying:

"I swear to god, if it's those two boys again, there will be blood!"

You ran until you reached the castle, quietly jogging inside and kissing against almost every surface you could find.

"We should maybe get into one of those rooms though", Gwaine suggested with swollen lips (you loved that sight) "I don't want any guards to find us"

You agreed with him and to your luck there was a door in reach, Gwaine put his lips on yours again and opened it. Pressing you against a wall. He sneaked one hand on your ass and secured your hands over your head with the other one.

Then he went down your neck, leaving hickeys, you screamed when there appeared a third hand pushing up your top to get your chest on display.

Your scream made Gwaine jump and also scream, then your voices mixed with two others, which resulted in more screaming from all of you.

"Who the hell is here?", Gwaine asked, pushing you a little behind him, but he couldn't see anything. In the next moment there was a bright light, made by a torch as you could see after a few seconds - it was a guard.

Your look fell on no one less than Merlin and Arthur themselves right next to you, hair roughled up and Merlin also had some bruises on his neck, then the guard asked: "Apologies, Sire, I thought you were a burglar. But what are you actually doing in here?" - "It's not what, it's who", Gwaine mumbled under his breath, which only you, Merlin, and Arthur could understand.

"What?", asked the guard again "Yeah, (Y/N), tell him what we were doing", Arthur requested, looking at you intensively "Uhh, we were... memorizing some poetry."

The guard nodded, looking weirdly at all of you and then dissappeared.

"We uhm..", Merlin tried to safe his and Arthur's arse, not knowing that you knew of them yet "Merlin, we know what you were doing in here, we have known for quite some time", you interrupted.

"You were doing the devil's tango", Gwaine said "Buttering the biscuit?", he kind of asked when everyone looked at him in question

"Oh my god", you rolled your eyes "Let's go", Arthur suggested, then you all got out of the room.

"We shall tell you to be a little more discreet with your 'sexual activities' as Lancelot put it, we would all be very thankful.", you told them, Merlin blushed, a crooked smile on his face, while Arthur said nothing, only looking at you both in embarassment "We'll try", Merlin answered "Thank you very much", Gwaine nodded his head.

"Who's hand was on my arse in there?", you asked in confusion "Who touched my boy?", Gwaine asked a little overprotective "Merlin, let's go", Arthur said "This never happened, (Y/N) I'm sorry, have a good night!", then they were gone quickly.

You looked at Gwaine and both of you had to start laughing so hard, you wondered why the guard didn't come again.

Although I’d like to think of Merlin as a gay disaster, I’m a simp for the short-lived romance that he had with Freya. Therefore, Merlin is my bisexual disaster child. Please give him a break, he’s been through enough bullshit already. He is also genderfluid. 

Arthur is a bisexual King, there’s no arguing there. He’s a simp for our unhinged sorcerer and our cinnamon roll Gwen. The amount of heart eyes that he’s been giving Merlin... it’s crazy. I mean, come on.

Morgana is a lesbian Queen. Argue with the fucking wall. What do you mean she became evil and tormented everyone in Camelot? I don’t remember that, you must’ve watched a different show. Morgana and Gwen are dating.

Again with the whole metaphor thing, Merlin's entire character is about having to hide his identity and wishing that he could be free to be himself so that he wouldn't have to lie about how much Arthur means to him. So that's all very gay, but he's also just very queer-coded generally. There are so many jokes about him being more effeminate or wearing women's clothing, most notably in this episode where he dresses in full drag and then takes the opportunity to shamelessly flirt with Arthur. Unhinged.

Basically every other character seems to just assume that he's gay, at least towards the end, because Gaius and Arthur are in utter disbelief that Merlin would be 'seeing a girl'. And of course he isn't, he's actually sneaking around with that druid guy, leading Arthur to question how courting a girl would leave him 'walking with a limp.'

I also think it's very interesting how often Merlin has to pretend to be attracted to women to avoid people discovering his secret, like with Gwen in Series 1 or Morgana in Series 2. Or this scene, where Gwen and Merlin are the only people not affected by the Lamia's seduction charm and they're trying to figure out why. And Merlin says, 'it doesn't affect you because you're a woman'. And firstly, Gwen is like, 'so what?' So, bisexual queen. And then Merlin says, "it only affects men," and Gwen says, "so then why haven't you fallen under her spell?" And Merlin is just like, 'oh shit, I don't know. I can't think of any reason why I wouldn't be seduced by a woman.'

Now, you might be saying, "but Merlin is attracted to women! what about that one female love interest he had for literally one episode who immediately died?" Oh, you mean:

I'm sorry to all of the Freylin shippers out there, but this was so clearly just the writers' last-ditch attempt to make Merlin straight. If you think about it, Freya also 'has magic' if you catch my drift, and that is the only thing that she and Merlin have in common, and the only thing that they talk about. And if you look at their dialogue out of context, it really doesn't seem like it's magic that they're talking about. It's just gay/lesbian solidarity. Also, never forget when Colin Morgan accidentally referred to Merlin's potential love interests as "him or her." So who else could he have been thinking of?

Merlin definitely had a crush on Lancelot. From the moment that they first meet, he just keeps going on about, 'omg, isn't Lancelot so strong and brave and chivalrous? God, I hope he becomes a knight, he would look so good in a suit of armour.' And then he says to Gwen, completely unprompted, "so just for the sake of argument– Arthur or Lancelot?" Why are you thinking about that Merlin? Then that scene ends with Merlin and Lancelot getting drunk and stumbling home together and waking up the next morning having shared Merlin's single bed. So take from that what you will. I don't necessarily think that anything happened between them, not because I think Lancelot is straight, don't get it twisted, just because I think he's a fucking virgin.

But certified pansexual manwhore Gwaine on the other hand, oh they definitely fucked. And it's a very similar situation to Lancelot, Merlin's only flirting technique is just to find some buff guy who's just saved his life and be like, 'oh my god what can I possibly do to repay you? Maybe you could come back to my place and I could tend to your wounds and then we could go down to the tavern, have a few drinks'.

And it works. Merlin literally used his job as apprentice physician to the Knights of the Round Table as his own personal Grindr, and i love that for him. But, of course, these are just side hoes to Merlin's main bitch, Arthur.

You can deny everything else that I've said, but you cannot deny that Merlin was in love with Arthur. And don't even try to say, 'but it's just because it was his destiny'. Because, yeah, like that's any less gay. They're two sides of the same coin, destined to be together, Merlin 'uses magic only for Arthur'. Come on.

Also, it's pretty clear that Merlin cares about Arthur more than he cares about his destiny, throughout the entire show. But it culminates in this scene in series five where, because of very contrived plot reasons, Arthur has to choose between legalizing magic and saving the life of Mordred. And Merlin convinces Arthur not to legalise magic so that he will let Mordred die. He literally enables the genocide of his own people and condemns himself to a lifetime of suffering just on the off chance that he can spend a bit more time with Arthur.

And if that isn't heartbreaking enough, of course, every action that Merlin makes only confirms Arthur's fate. And after he very platonically dies in Merlin's arms, as dudebros do, what does Merlin do? does he go back to Camelot and live a full happy heterosexual life? Of course not. No, he spends the next one and a half thousand years just waiting at Arthur's resting place, waiting for the day that Arthur will be resurrected and they can be together again. What the fuck kind of Greek tragedy, Achilles and Patroclus level shit is that? That is fucking gay.

It wasn’t just the straights that believed that, but most of the queer community.

It made Merlin want to reach out to Arthur, bring him into his arms, and tell the blonde that it was okay and that he understood. He had been on a date before he met Freya and Merlin had casually let it slip that he was bisexual and his date had gone very quiet before asking.

Merlin had been so taken aback, he didn’t even react when she had stood up and told him to call her when he picked the right side. Coming home had been a blur, walking into the flat, Gwaine took one look at his face and sat him down.

They had spent the night passing a bottle of cheap vodka back and forth, talking about sexuality. Gwaine was pansexual and mentioned that sometimes people asked him if it was even a real thing.

Freya hadn’t been like that; she was never thinking Merlin would be fickle or pick a side. Everything had been great till she broke it off with him, telling him that he needed to find passion. Looking over to the painting on the easel, he felt his heart flutter at all the colors.

The whole thing screamed of intense burning desire. It was kinda scary, looking at the feelings he had inside on a canvas for him to see outside himself. When he had painted for Freya it had been monochrome, still images of love and compassion, but it was dull. It was after she had seen the painting he had done for her that she broke it off.

To have these emotions for someone he barely knew and only met twice was making him a little nauseous, like when you’ve been on the Big Dipper for too long, but he wasn’t sure if he wanted off the ride yet. It was with every drop his stomach fluttered, and he rose out of his seat. He looked back at Gwaine, who was watching him with a knowing smirk.

“I just want to say that the month after the party I’ve never seen Arthur pine as much as he did when he thought he wouldn’t see you again, and I had to watch the Sophia disaster of twenty-sixteen, so let me tell you that means something.”

Hearing that made Merlin’s heart flutter and the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. “And how you wore his jacket and painted his face. I know the feelings are mutual.” Merlin flushed and tried to think how to deny it, but couldn’t come up with an excuse.

“I didn’t even know he was.” Merlin said lamely, and Gwaine just nodded, like it was the answer to everything. He couldn’t help that feeling of a thread being attached between him and the blonde at the moment they locked eyes.

Gwaine just picked up his controller and unpaused the game. “Sometimes that’s all it takes.” He said wisely. Leaving Merlin standing next to his painting, feeling lost.

Biography

tl;dr - to him his life had already worked out far better than it was supposed to by being adopted into House Goodbrother and so very little was taken seriously. Merrick cared for nothing outside of his family and his own enjoyment. In his search for something more he set off for Essos, spending the first eight months of his time there doing nothing but indulging his every whim. It was during one drunken night that word reached him of Targaryens and a rough, barely considered plan entered his head. He had every intention of finding them and using the knowledge to his advantage ( what advantage that would be he had no idea ) but from the moment Daella Targaryen intervened on his behalf he's been at her side.

As unruly and unpredictable it felt like Merrick was always meant to be a part of House Goodbrother. His true parentage might have been unknown but it had never been something that concerned him when he felt so at home running through the halls of Hammerhorn and exploring with his siblings.

It was difficult to make Merrick to anything that he didn't want to or didn't find some kind of enjoyment. The only person who could ever really leverage his love for them effectively was Viktarion and so he learned sail and fight because his father taught him and continued only because it kept his attention. Later in life he'd be grateful for the freedom his skill with a blade allowed him, granting him the confidence that if he ever talked himself into trouble he'd soon be able to fight himself out of it.

Most of his teenage years were spent hot on the heels of Iravan, following his brother from island to island as much as he would let him. Their adventures slowed when Viktarion decided that it was time for his brother to marry and while Merrick gained a sister, he lost the man he considered his partner in crime to duty.

His twenties continued much the same way - he sailed, he fought, he drank sometimes in that order other times not but always repeated. It was supposed to be endlessly fun but the older he grew the less fulfilling he found it. By the time he reached twenty-six even the fondness he held for his family wasn't enough to soothe the itch he felt to do something else. So like so many other spares before him, he set off for Essos.

He could hardly claim that it offered him anything different, simply providing a change of scene for his usual antics. For months he was unchanged until he caught a rumour of Targaryens. He reached out to a few sources, confirming that if he located them it'd be worth his while.

By some miracle find them he did, only their first meeting was far from what he'd expected it to be. Predictably he'd managed to get himself in trouble, only for it to be Daella Targaryen who intervened on his behalf. From that moment on he felt indebted to her and offered his sword and protection in return.

For the last five years he's been going where Daella does, being whatever she wants him to be and doing whatever she needs him to be. He had found contentment in it but as they're bound for Westeros he found a familiar restlessness creeping in.

Headcanons:

He can turn his hand to using most any weapon that finds its way into them. Growing up he practised most with axes and bows but he now has a fondness for swords. He only started using a shield when he met Daella, finding that he felt the need to have something else to protect her with.

There was a time when he showed great aptitude and promise when it came to his studies but never applied himself enough for it to truly come to anything. He does still show flashes of intelligence, though he much prefers to keep it hidden underneath his careless attitude.

He's been learning high valyrian for a few years now and has made decent progress with the language, achieving a conversational fluency even if there are plenty conversations he doesn't fully understand if they're spoken too quickly.
