#I would be really grateful for fic recs btw

I saw this post going around and got really curious as to how OP came up with their numbers because I could not replicate them at all.

I was going to reply directly but it was getting very very long and I didn’t want to wade onto someone’s post with a bunch of my own stats bc it seemed rude, so I’m putting my response here.

I’m going to preface this by saying that I’m fully in the camp of “write because you like writing, not for an audience response” because if you don’t like the process of writing, there is no level of audience response that will make writing worth it. But. I’ve seen a lot of folks agonize over Ao3 stats and get stuck in the weeds on Ratios™. And I think there are a few really common misconceptions around what these numbers mean.

The rest of this is going to be under a readmore to spare y’all but basically it’s a breakdown of trying to calculate my own percentages like the OP in the original post and then dialing down into why hits != readers.

Here’s the stats from one of my fics as of today, May 1st 2023. I am by no means a prolific or widely known fic writer - I happen to be in a big fandom and writing for for the main pairing in that fandom.

completed multi chapter fic, rated Mature:

So this one has three chapters, 2736 hits, 436 kudos, and 146 comments. Kudos divided by hits is 16%.

“Oh no!” I might say, seeing this. “Only sixteen percent of people liked my fic enough to leave a kudos? Either my stuff is shit, or fic-readers are a bunch of lazy fucks who don’t appreciate the work I’ve put into this. Either way, I’m mad now!”

But (and I say this with a lot of love in my heart, I promise) that’s silly. Not just for the philosophical reasons of writing what makes you happy and not caring about the response. It’s silly because it’s wrong.

On a multi-chapter fic, each person who finishes it is responsible for at least 3 hits but can only leave 1 kudos. Dividing the total hits by 3 gives you 912 hits. So, once you’ve corrected for number of chapters, the percent of people who have hit kudos is 47%.

“Holy shit!” writer-me says, “I’ve published original fiction in my university newspaper, original fiction that I poured my heart and soul into btw, and if approximately half of the people who read it  sent me a little heart emoji, I would have died and gone to heaven. Fic readers are the Nicest, Most Generous, and Most Beautiful readers on the planet and I am so grateful to be in this community with them.”

But! 47% is still wrong. Here’s why.

Hits != Readers

I don’t how other people do this, but my process of reading a fic is often like this (each step is one hit):

open link from someone else's rec, try to click "mark for later"

realize I'm logged out. sign in to Ao3, go back to fic and click "mark for later"

come back to read fic, generating at least one hit per chapter

open a second tab so that I can write a comment as I go (again, generating at least one hit per chapter)

finish fic, create bookmark, and then navigate back to fic to mark it as read so it's taken off my marked for later page

if I really liked the fic, I'll end up opening it back up in a tag many times so I can rec it to people by sending them the link

if I really really liked the fic, I'll come back and read it again (this is doubly true for explicit fic, btw.)

I think I’m on the high end of generating hits, but it only takes a few of me to really dial up that hit counter. And most people are going to do one or two of these things - I’d argue that it’s pretty rare for someone to leave just one hit on a fic unless they nope out of it in the middle.

Formula for calculating number of readers from number of hits:

There isn’t one. And it would take a much better mathematician than me to make one. Because this is way more complicated than dividing by chapters. Most readers leave more than one hit - especially if they like the fic a lot. Short fics and explicit fics are more likely to be read multiple times.

“But what if I crave validation?” writer-me complains, irritated with math-me for not downloading statistics software, shoving a million Ao3 fics into it, and producing some kind of bullshit linear regression. “What if I constantly see people with higher kudos/hits ratios than me? This is all very optimistic but it really doesn’t jive with my deep seated belief that everyone secretly hates me all the time and they’re too nice to tell me about it. Do they hate me? They probably hate me, right? Tell me if you hate me.”

To which I say, listen very closely, writer-me. You can either decide that AO3 stats mean something and lose your damn mind deciphering what they mean, or you can be like that kid who got an avocado for christmas and say “it’s a avocado comment!! Thanks!! :D”

And that kid seemed pretty happy.

Hi i am a clexa fan and i having been this fandom from almost 2 years now i have started reading fanfics from the past year and a half and let me tell you i have realised what i have truly missed.

2021 fic recs

time for fic recs again. the list I made last year has been pretty popular and there can never be too much fic, so.

this year may not have been as scary or covid-restricted as last year was, that didn’t really lessen my appreciation for all the authors writing their stories, week after week, or month after month. i’ve had so many epiphanies about myself and felt every kind of emotion while reading these fics (and many others that felt too personal to make it onto the list, if that makes sense) and I am just really grateful for fic and everyone who writes it.

here are this year’s recs, from two fandoms: marvel and harry potter (not surprising to anyone who follows me, i'm sure).

p.s. my reccing style kind of highlights warnings in a way that might maybe be a bit off-putting? i’m adding the warnings because I feel like those are usually the things that will make or break a fic-reading deal, but then again there might be other aspects to the fic that would outweigh any hesitance that those warnings might have caused. so if I do this again next year, I might format my recs differently. any feedback on that would be greatly appreciated, btw!

that being said, there are a lot of angsty, heavy warnings in a lot of these fics again, but the heavy stuff really isn’t the focus of really any of them. all of these are also sweet/comforting/romantic/hot.

everyone needs a chance to be small‘verse by Mr_Phich | Clint Barton & Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes & Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes & Clint Barton & Steve Rogers | 205 k | warnings: trauma, past child abuse, childhood trauma, mind control, implied/referenced self-harm, restraining/restraints and many others, please author’s warnings | comment: despite all the heavy tags, this is mostly a really sweet and domestic fic about healing and learning to trust others and accept oneself. It’s an interesting take on non-sexual age play as a form of comfort and a way to manage the effects of physical and neurological trauma. includes occupational therapy!

Regression Analysis by Finely Honed (jaqen_hgar) | Bucky Barnes/Tony Stark | 64k | warnings: past alcohol abuse/alcoholism, canon-typical violence | comment: a very emotionally complex de-aging fic, where the de-aging helps everyone work through their own issues. how it all gets resolved is maybe the most touching part of it to me, might have shed a tear or two.

almeno tu nell’universo by silkspectred | Steve Rogers/Tony Stark | 115 k | warnings: graphic depictions of violence, PTSD, past alcohol abuse/alcoholism, emotional/psychological abuse, physical abuse, child abuse, implied/referenced torture, and many others, please author’s warnings | comment: i guess you could say that this fic makes Steve earn Tony’s trust and forgiveness after Civil War. and it does, in a very satisfying way, but I also think it’s much more complex than that, and a lot more romantic. It’s also a beautiful (and painful) character study of Tony.

How to Wind a Supersoldier in Ten Days by ceealaina | Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilson | 15k | warnings: none | comment: it’s just cute!! just pure, fluffy, awkward flirting and dating á la slightly winter soldier-y Bucky and a confused and amused Sam.

WIPs

Of Love and Little Bones by spelling_error | Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilson | 94 k (ongoing) | warnings: infant death, forced pregnancy, implied/referenced child abuse, past sexual assault | comment: not sure how to describe this. It’s a/b/o with a twist (and a lot of emotional baggage). I think what I most enjoy about this is Bucky’s grappling with his identity and Sam’s perseverance and stability in the face of it all. plus, of course, the slow-burn and the little moments of domesticity that creep up on them.

Black and Blue by concupiscence66 | Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilson | 44k (ongoing) | warnings: PTSD, implied/referenced torture, implied/referenced rape/non-con, racism | comment: this is definitely a comfort fic for me – which does not mean it lacks depth or anything, but it does combine some of my favourite comfort-y elements, including Delacroix stuff, gay uncles (sort of, we’re getting there), domesticity and working through trauma/mental health stuff together.

Bound to You ‘verse by RiotFalling, WhiteIronWolf (adoctoraday) | Bucky Barnes/Tony Stark | 352 k | warnings: many, including PTSD, psychological trauma, attempted sexual assault, mentions of drugs and alcohol, flashbacks, reference to past non-con and many more, please check authors’ warnings! | comment: what do you get when you put together two incredibly traumatized people who like each other a lot but are shit at talking about their problems and only try to take care of the other person? spoiler: a lot of quiet suffering, slow healing, hot sex and some really soft and beautifully written bdsm ‘verse.

HARRY POTTER

Finished:

A Motherly Intervention by pekeleke | Harry Potter/Severus Snape | 34k | warnings: none | comment: this is a sweet holiday-themed fic that I discovered right when the last chapter was posted! very little angst for a snarry fic, and a lot of everyone wanting to take care of and coddle Snape, which is something I can get behind. also getting a fic from Molly’s POV was a treat!

WIPs:

Pacify ‘verse by Chickenpets | Harry Potter/Severus Snape | 666k (ongoing) | warnings: graphic descriptions of violence, underage sex, PTSD, torture, panic attacks, etc. please check author’s warnings! | comment: (from last year) this is both a very interesting and extremely detailed retelling of the last two books (and beyond), as well as the greatest love story ever told, as well as a lovely description of a (morally extremely dubious, of course, but that goes without saying) hardcore bdsm relationship. I like bdsm fic where the bdsm serves a psychological or practical purpose and isn’t merely a kink, and this very much hits the mark with that. it also isn’t as simple as you might think. very, very creative and well-written. to which I would like to add now, 166k later: 1) I think this fic and it’s characterisations of Harry and Snape have more or less replaced – nay, usurped – any previous characterisations or headcanons I might have had of them & 2) the fucking tenderness that Chickenpets manages to convey with their writing takes my breath away every single time. especially the tenderness that Snape exhibits towards Harry.

And I’m so grateful that I didn’t just prejudge but actually did see what this ship is about because everything about it is so beautiful.

You would think it doesn’t make sense but it perfectly does because you see, Jeremy Heere isn’t normal.

That, we can all agree. From beginning to end, Jeremy desperately tried to be normal. He tried to fit in and stay in the line. But that’s just not who he is.

I personally struggle to see Jeremy as the popular guy at school who ends up marrying his high school sweatheart.

Falling in love with the quantum computer in his brain, however, is SUCH A Jeremy thing to do.

I think that’s exactly how Jeremy would feel after Voices in My Head.

The author specifically states in the tags that Squip and Jeremy’s relationship isn’t romantic in this story.

Not that I read the tags first. I just thought this was TOO slow even for a slow burn and then checked if it was really jeresquip and was like- oh shit AHAHHS

Still, their Squip is so well written and in character that even just reading their friendship with Jeremy is sooo comforting.

I’m not a big fan of AUs but this one was inspired by E.T. so if you enjoy that kinda stuff check this out!

These were all the long fics I was going to recommend. I loved the plot and how the events were unfolding in all of them.

I know there’s a thing called magic of fanfiction but I don’t like it when it’s like “Squip showed up on Jeremy’s doorstep and he was human.”

FULL DISCLOSURE: I got carried away with the fics that lifted my spirits this year and basically turned this into a fic rec list. And it is a long long list, so just brace yourselves, I guess? I put it in the end so you won’t have to read it 

What was your biggest writing/reading achievement this year?

Okay, I have always been a silent reader. For some weird reason, I couldn’t bring myself to interact with a fic or the writer. So, I guess my biggest achievement would be letting the writer know how much I enjoyed reading their work. It counts, okay?

What did you learn about yourself as a writer/reader this year?

It is so SO important to leave comments or reblogs on fics or any medium of art that you enjoy. I’ve been a silent reader for years, okay? And while likes help, letting someone know that their writing made your day or completely gutted you will make them appreciate you like no other, and I say this from experience. Creators are simple people and deserve all the love you can give them. Even a keyboard smash helps, btw. 

Did you dive into something familiar or try something new this year?

I started reading Criminal Minds fanfics this year, does that count as something new? I don’t know. 

What are you grateful for?

Personally? I’m just glad my family and I got through the pandemic so far while staying healthy.

Reading wise, I am forever grateful fanfiction exists because it’s the only piece of literary work I have been able to read consistently.

Have your style (writer) or tastes (reader) changed this year?

I was not an avid fluff reader. It sounds weird and I always say I hate angst but I tended to gravitate more towards stories that left me aching rather than reading fluff, so I think that has changed.

What’s the first thing you want to read or write this year?

My textbooks would be nice 😂 But uh, I’d like to work on this story idea that I have had for month now.

Anything you want to try in 2021?

Like I said, writing my own fic would be nice but I know me so I’m good as it is 😂

 Starting with @justfangstvdto  ‘s  Waking up to Klaus painting you imagine. This is an all time favourite. Open Coffin is also, one of her best works!!

@moon-light-jukebox ‘s Angel is very close to my heart and I also enjoy Morning Coffee because who doesn’t love a coffee shop AU?

@imagining-in-the-margins has so many fics to choose from. It’s like a reader’s nirvana  Anticipation  Impromptu  Pumpkin   Fairytales Sunflowers   Sweet Cherries   Breakfast Run  

@erin-bo-berin writes the cutest Dad!Spencer fics (great smut too but we’re not talking about that here) I’d start with Cabin Fever and Cupid 

@definitelynotkatesblog ‘s 6 AM and Something to Cry About have a special place in my heart

@veraiconcos ‘ Kiss it Better  was the first Criminal Minds fic I ever read so it’s special in its own way 

@gubler-me-up  is very difficult to choose from but Fact Check would be my pick 

@mggpleasedontlookhere ‘s Helping  Heart and Insignificant Being are absolutely delightful!

@reidscanehand  is another writer whose every work is just an incredible read. i know this blog is still relatively new, but i’m immensely grateful for every single person who has taken the time to read, write an ask, leave notes, or simply click on any of my content. i only started writing haikyuu!! fics earlier this year, but i’m still shocked at the amount of love and support- and how this fandom welcomed me with open arms.

So I don't post much but I wanted to leave an ungodly long, overly detailed post which is literally just a rehash of a comment i just left on ao3 just to express my love for this fic, It is so good that I am compelled to share my amazing experience with others in hopes that they too will have a similar experience, because it was just that good. 

so I'll start with this, I read this about two weeks ago. I was set to go to the dentist and get my wisdom teeth pulled. Dentist visits always send me into a bad anxiety attack, and I was told I would need a lot of rest for maybe three days while my mouth healed so I decided to look for a nice slow burn fic, to get me through it. so  thanks btw to someone in the facebook group Reylo Fic Recs recommending Cream which lead me to Mitan Midi. I read the first chapter to see if this was the right fit for the journey I had been referring to among my friends and family as a "true religious experience". I meant to only read the first chapter but the first chapter got me SO hooked, I ended up reading about 70% of this fic in one night, oops. 

so the dentist visit goes with the usual crying, and anxiety attack followed by some awful soreness, and pain. since I felt awful I wanted my husband to read to me, but it was such a good story that I wanted him to get to experience it as well.

 A little of info on my husband, he likes Reylo and totally enables my obsession, but he never reads fanfictions. so he began reading and just in the first chapter he had the same reaction I did. The way Rey's depression and isolation is described is so raw that you can't help but identify with her. As we continued there was a point where he asked me "did you write this?" because some of Ben and Rey's interactions are so real and natural and so identical to our own marriage (right down to the bratty behavior and teasing), to which I had to inform him, "fuck! I wish i could write like this!" but it was truly uncanny.

So as we continued on he observed a few things that I couldn't agree more with. for one, the rare mentions of technology makes this timeless, secondly, (small spoiler warning btw) it could have been such a cheap way to create drama by having the police or the mob come after ben, but it was consistent to the end, just an encapsulated story about two characters whose drama begins and ends with each other as it should be, and last but not least it is as sexy as it is funny. we laughed so hard together during all the hilarious situations, and had long conversations about sex and what things really feel like for each other while reading the sex scenes. we both fell in love with the characters the setting, and your writing.

I know it's easy for people to aim for a story with wild plots. drama, having complex sentences that use one too many semicolons, and showing off some vast knowledge of vocabulary words, but at the end of the day I wish half the books I've read (and sadly paid money for) contained stories that were so full of heart, so honest. real, and gave an me experience like the one I had reading this with my husband.

So my expectations were to find a slow burn to keep me occupied as I went through my "Religious experience" of having had my wisdom teeth yanked out of my mouth, turns out my teeth didn't hurt as bad or for as long as I thought, but I will always refer to this as my religious experience of 2019, because this fic gave me and my husband an amazing bonding experience the likes which we haven't had since my husband and I sat down to watch Patterson. so thank you @ao3animal

This fandom has introduced me to amazing music, art, movies, and writing that has gotten me through shit. and  I'm just insanely grateful. Anyway sorry for the long post and sorry if anyone feels like I'm over selling this. Also I’ve posted this on almost all my social media that i feel like I’m spamming the poor writer and I apologize for that too. Now, if you'll excuse me I have a sweet little fic called House Arrest to finish while I wait for Cream to update.

First ship you ever read fic for: Is it weird that I’m having trouble remembering this? I know the first fandoms I dipped my toes into fanfic-wise were LOTR and Stargate SG-1, but I never really shipped anything from either of those. I guess the first pairing that got me invested enough to read fic was Stargate Atlantis’ Weir and Sheppard (not to be confused with Shepard from Mass Effect; why is that such a popular fictional surname?)

First ship you ever wrote fic for: I think that was also Sheppard/Weir from Atlantis. I didn’t write more than a fic or two in that fandom, but it was enough to get the ball rolling. 

Ship you write the most now: Currently I have fanfic largely on the backburner while I work on original writing. It may be a stretch goal at best, but I’d like to get my novel finished and semi-polished in time to enter the Pitch Wars writing mentorship contest, which has a late-August deadline. Sadly that doesn’t leave much time for fanfic. But prior to this original writing push, the pairings I wrote the most were Jyn/Cassian (in my multichapter fic which I will finish eventually) and, taking a glance through my writing tag on Tumblr, Aloy/Erend in prompt-fics. That makes me quite happy, because how can you not love a ship whose canon dialogue includes 

Him: “All the way to Meridian just to see me?”

Her: “Have you been drinking?!”

(spoiler alert: yes. he has.)

Ship you read the most now: I haven’t had much fic-reading time either for the previously mentioned reason. But one fic I have been working my way through as time permits is Equivalent Exchange, an epic length *mumble mumble mumble* Theron Shan/F!Imperial Agent fic. I blame @thievinghippo for reccing it. :p 

Newest ship: *sulkily points to above answer* Two months ago I didn’t like any characters Troy Baker had voiced, and everything made sense. Then I fell head over heels in love with his character in The Last of Us, and my whole world did a 180. I learned to love Theron Shan, who previously annoyed the hell out of me, and started shipping him with my Consular. I picked up Uncharted 4 (which came free with my PS4 when I bought it two years ago and had been sitting untouched in my living room ever since) and went googly-eyed over TB’s character in that too (Sam Drake). Then I played Uncharted: The Lost Legacy--which is awesome btw, basically all about two WoC and their friendship--and started shipping Sam and Nadine hardcore, because hellooo enemies to grudging colleagues to...risking their own lives to save each other? GIMME THAT UST. So yeah, my newest ship is pretty much Troy Baker’s characters/everyone. Except Kai Leng. Kai Leng can still rot in hell.

Rare ship you wanna read more of: Obviously Nathaniel/Velanna, my classic answer to this question. Also Sam/Nadine, which at ten fics on AO3 is even rarer than Nate/Velanna. Probably just means I’m going to have to write my own. Sigh. 

Your taboo ship: I don’t think I have one. My ship tastes tend to be pretty vanilla, honestly.

They never met in canon ship: Not romantic, because one of them is underage, but I think it would have been cool if Bodhi Rook and Sabine Wren had ever met, since they were both Imperial defectors who played significant parts in the Rebellion. Also they both have four-letter last names that refer to a type of bird. Not that that means anything. 

Your unexpected ship: *sighs loudly* YES THERON, I LIKE YOU NOW. Doesn’t mean I forgive you for always giving Lana a hard time, though.

The ship you always forget to give love to: Most of my Old Republic ships in general, really. For example, I love the Trooper/Jorgan romance, but I’ve never written a single thing about them. I’ve barely written anything for Bounty Hunter/Torian either, which is another of my faves.

Ship your OC with a canon character: Do my BioWare ships count?

A ship you’re embarrassed to ship: I don’t think I have any. Ship and let ship, man. 

Your most romantic ship:  I think it’s Shepard/Garrus, really. Not much compares to the scope of their journey across three games, topped off with how satisfying their scenes were in ME 3 and Citadel. For all BioWare’s faults, I will forever be grateful to them for giving all us weirdo xenophiles the love interest we asked (and asked, and asked) for. 

Your sexiest ship: It may sound weird to say Jyn/Cassian given that they never even kissed. (Stupid canon.) But the way that they looked at each other. The eyesex was real. So was the utter lack of personal space.

Your most tragic ship: Also Jyn/Cassian. It doesn’t get much more tragic than dying in each other’s arms. (I reiterate: stupid canon. Thank goodness for fic.)

A ship you want more content for: All of them.

T^T i read her tokyo ghoul au and i actually didn't have a clue what tokyo ghoul was, i looked it up on wikipedia before reading it djbfkdhdjd and her exes confront each other series was really amazing too. and im rambling but her jeonghan magic au, all the stars we steal, that was probably the first fic of her's i read and it hit something in me and i really wish i could read it again like it was the first time 😔 i really loved it sm. book wise, i will never forget jodi picoult's small great things. and also like any book reader, ps. i love you is definitely a favourite of mine :') it was so touching and i just genuinely really love that story. 

i have! there's quite a lot of moments like that, but this one where i went on vacation in the mountains? we stayed at a very nice place. on the first day i was really tired so i slept til the evening, and when i woke up it was drizzling and there's was quite a breeze, so i sat in front of the open door of my room. in front was a swimming pool so i just put on some music and watched the rain drop into the pool. it was the most relaxed i had felt in a while and i wish i could go back :') 

i would say i have! when we can talk anon off i'll tell you which one, but i really enjoyed writing this one drabble/oneshot and im glad other people seemed to like it as well :DD
