She's Human or Weapon

"I've changed who I was because of Charles and because of you...so please look into my mind." Shivering under his touch I opened my eyes entering his mind.
Years ago - Shaw's Lab
Nazi soilders throw me into a cell harshly where I slammed my back into the wall grunting. Lifting my head up my blonde hair is sticking to my face as I hold myself up on my hands and knees. One of them closes the cell door chuckling as they walked away leaving me alone. "You're where you belong. The both of them." Hugging my knees to my chest I started crying in the corner until I felt someone staring at me. Lifting my head up a little my teary eyes locked onto a boy with dark brown hair and dark eyes. "Why are you looking at me...I'm a monster you shouldn't look at me." The boy scooted to press against the bars since his cell was next to mine. "You're not a monster you didn't kill your mother because you couldn't lift a stupid metal coin...I'm Erik Lensherr what's your name?" He sticks his hand through the bars where I slowly shake his hand. "Aurora Deerfield. I'm sorry about your mother...the guy holding us prisoners says I'm a weapon maybe he's right." Laying my head back against the bars sucking in a shacky breath.
"You don't seem like a monster to me, Aurora. Don't believe what anyone says unless they come after you personally. Like hurts you or your family. And if you want to call someone a monster make it me. I'll take that pain for you." Erik explained intertwining my hand with his where I could see a number on his arm meaning that he was supposed to go to the camps to work until he died. Pushing hair behind my ear I squeezed his hand. "Let's make a pack right now. That from this day on we'll look out for each other. Protect each other like we're siblings so they can't break us. Sounds like a deal." He nodded closing his eyes for a second of rest listening to the moaning of the metal cells. "I agree to that. Can I call you Rora?" I smiled for the first time since I was captured by the guards nodding my head yes in agreement. "I'd like that, E."
Erik and I still stared into each other's eyes deeply where I felt more tears slipping down. He slowly lifted his hand to my cheek as I dropped my hands causing the soilders to collapse into the grass. "That's it, Rora. I'll take the pain. This isn’t you but I'll protect you always like we vowed. Just let go. Let go on me I'm right here." Flinging my arms around his neck I started uncontrollably sobbing. He stumbled backwards a little wrapping his arms around my waist catching my weak form. He reaches up running a hand through my blonde hair as I death grip his jacket for a few seconds before he gently pushed me towards Charles who takes my hand in his standing beside Hope and Logan. He spun around facing the men as their guns leavite in the air beside him. "Take this as a warning to you and whoever thinks that we are the enemy. The ones that shall come after you. I am here to tell you we won't hurt you if you leave us alone. As my friend and sister has said we are better than we used to be. I could kill all of you right now if I wanted but I am showing you mirsey. Now get off the property before I change my mind!" I stepped up raising my right hand gaining control of their minds softly. "Warn everyone you know. You're free to go."
The soilders got to their feet stumbling onto the helicopter flying off the property in a rush. Charles squeezed my hand in his before I leaned down kissing him whispering. "Let's go check on the baby." Raven gathered all the students into the main lobby of the mansion into the lab underneath the school. Laying my back on the table Hank shows the video of my stomach gasping suddenly. "This shouldn't be possible yet but would you all want to know the gender now?" Charles and I glanced to each other sharing the same smile so he moves the video screen revealing with a huge grin. "You're having a baby boy. Congrats you two." Erik pats his friend on the back while he leans down kissing my forehead gently. Grabbing Charles's hand in mine I sniffed through happy tears. "I think it's time we tell the students...everything. No more secrets from them this is their home after all." Erik stopped me in the hallway grabbing my forearm which causes Charles to stop his wheelchair. "Can I ask if you have a name picked out yet?" Charles chuckled up to his friend replying. "Actually we have. Aurora thought it was fitting and you've earned the right after what you just did. We've decided to name him Erik Francis Xavier." Erik bent down hugging his friend before I walked down standing on the second to last step of the main staircase seeing all the young eyes focusing on me.
"When my husband Charles and I opened this school it was so that mutants like us could feel safe and learn to control their gifts. We also promised you that this place would be a safe home. Tonight marks the second time this house has been attacked by someone who thinks that we are a threat and for that I - we are sorry we broke that promise." Glancing over my shoulder to Charles he rolled up in his wheelchair grasping my hand in his speaking up. "The thing that you should know is that we will work everyday to ensure that this place is safe once more. And that if any of you know people who are suffering tell them this can be there home. That we - my wife and the X-Men shall protect you. Everyone and every part of them belongs." All the children were sent off to do their own thing so I slowly walked over to Erik laying my head on his chest where he wrapped his arms around my waist watching Charles and Raven talking about the baby none the less. "That was a good speech you two did up there, Rora." Lifting my head up to his I asked hoping his answer would be no. "Will you stay for real this time, E?"
He leans down planting a kiss to my forehead with a genuine smile on his face which I hadn't seen since the day Hope was born. So I adore everytime I got to see such a sight. "Yes Aurora this time I am staying for sure. Because tonight you have shown me that we can be both a monster sometimes to the people who fear us but also human when we let the bad people go without killing them. We may not change everyone but we can try to make them see us as human beings." Wrapping my arms around his neck I smiled feeling him hug me back resting his chin ontop of my head hearing Charles running around in head. "Thank you for finding her that night, old friend. She deserves someone as perfect as you." Erik smiled towards the man reading his thoughts with a smile of his own to the two people who we're like siblings in his life. "Actually I should be thanking you, Erik. If it wasn't for you helping her escape we never would have met. I have gave you a home but you have given me a family. And for that I will be forever grateful." Professor X and Magneto went from friends to enemies then finally remaining together as family all thanks to Aurora Deerfield.

Brother Dearest Pt 52
Tumblr media
“Steve has a sister...” Peggy halfway murmured at the sight of the returned Commandos to the bar she alone sat in the curved booth with fingers twisting the shot glass holding a whiskey now watered down by the melted ice meant to cool it.
Jaques asked in his slide first into the booth the others joined in on the motion to support their friend in this monumental loss. “What?”
“Steve has a sister.” She repeated and jaws dropped to her rehash of all the Colonel had shared and the way he had hinted he would hurt Steve for the fate the girl suffered.
Gabe, “So she’s dead?”
Dum dum shook his head, “No, we know Steve! We spent all that time together and not one mention of a family!”
Peggy said on the cusp of tears with a crack in her voice, “Well we apparently didn’t know him very well!” Up she raised her glass and haltingly took a sip and lowered it with half the liquid remaining in the lipstick stained glass that tapped the table again to her swallow. “He never said if she was dead or alive.” She whispered with her mind circling on that woman traveling with the Colonel who said her name was classified.
Jim, “And what if she’s alive? Not like we can do anything for the girl.”
“I have to know.” Left simply to that the conversation hung like a wet blanket over the mock funeral on the base as none could attend the one they anticipated would be held to celebrate him upon his return as a hero to Brooklyn.
.
And small bits of progress were shared on and off in the aid of Stark in his enlisting her aid in clearing his name and saving the world between run ins of the old friends until the fated call, “I found her, she’s alive.”
“You got to be kidding me,” Dum Dum chuckled and asked, “Who is she then? Still a nurse or did she drop that after the war?”
“She’s a student, at Columbia University. She’s in Brooklyn. I’m going to meet her tomorrow after a stop by Steve’s grave.”
“Well then, do we at least get a name?”
“She changed it, her surname at least, she goes by Bunny Pear now.”
“Bunny Pear.” The name had his face go stoic recalling those towns and stops they crossed with those signs posted up creaking the gears in his head in puzzlement as to who this mystery sister and brother duo was and why the hell Steve acted like he knew nothing of them at all. “The only woman awarded the Medal of Honor Bunny Pear?”
“Yes, you’ve read about her then?”
“Steve lied about a lot more than just having a sister. Bunny Pear devastated every German force she and her brother came across, and while we toured a ruin of a city they’d left Steve and Bucky played the fool. Hundreds of soldiers we crossed had thousands of things to say about them.” He paused then said, “Ring us when you’ve talked to her with what you learn.”
“I will.” She replied and hung up the phone more fearful than she had been hours earlier upon uncovering an address to find said lost sister she had been brushed off by once before years prior as to why her friend was so curt in his parting tone that revealed a mingle of hurt and something else. Something she hoped to be a misunderstanding and not a betrayal of the man they all had such hopes for being a pure heart in the middle of a harsh war to guide them to safety and a better tomorrow.
 *
From the library to the dinner table you were set to move for the meal the brothers got started on once Eddie had come home and Peggy joined you all after having asked a few blaring questions about Venom in his shoot outwards ready to eat any intruder upon the telling scent of blood foreign to the family. In a skip of a scoop Eddie remained at home to keep watch of you all tonight knowing Venom would want to be on patrol all night. Both Norma and Dawn smiled and greeted Peggy, with whom they chatted in the wait for food until the doorbell rang again and Eddie sprung to check on who it was.
“Oh, hello,” the clear voice echoed through the house and was followed by, “Edwin Jarvis, there is a Peggy Carter here I believe?”
Eddie replied, “Yup, James said you called. Just you?”
“Jarvis, we’re growing cold, it’s on the move!” Stark’s voice came from the car parked on the curb who waved to Eddie, “Hey Eddie! Been following your headlines, you’ve been building up some steam!”
To that you smirked and climbed to your feet to join Peggy to the door, “I take it this means you won’t be staying for supper.”
“Apparently not. The offer was very kind however.” She answered with a kind smile.
Right to the door you strolled to stop in the doorway where Stark waved to you, “There you are Bunny! Not dead yet I see.”
That had you smirk and look to Jarvis in the sweep of his eyes over you, “Oh my,” he said then flashed you a grin stating, “Edwin Jarvis,” his hand outstretched for a handshake you returned, “Pleasure to meet you. I have heard so very many things about you, Mrs Pear Howlett.”
“Pleasure to meet you, you must have the patience of a mountain to work with Stark.”
His head tilted to the side a moment and he flashed Peggy a grin, “Lately it has been much more accommodating to my skill set and the company much less likely to land me slapped by women I come across.” His eyes wandered over you in a lean into Eddie’s side to the clear shift of your belly that had you rest a hand on it. “Might, I be bold in offering congratulations?”
“You may, and thank you.” You replied then looked to Peggy.
“I will let you rest, however I did want to let you know, the Howling Commandos, who traveled with Steve and Bucky in the war, they will be in town tomorrow and wondered if you might be up to meeting them? They also wished to pay their respects to Bucky’s parents as well.”
Eddie, “Bucky’s just got his Mom and sisters, girls are about 11 now.”
Peggy, “Good, we were planning on joining in for church, if you would accept that.”
“Not my place to ban anyone from church. We do have a block party after they may find as a reprieve after a Catholic Mass. Can be quite daunting for some not familiar with the service.”
She nodded and to Stark’s next honk she rolled her eyes and Jarvis said, “We will see you tomorrow, Mrs Pear Howlett, Mr Pear.” Both names accentuated with nods before his turn to join Peggy on the way back to the car.
“Should be fun,” you said to Eddie who chuckled and turned to lift Teddy in his race towards his father with drawing in hand to show it off.
“Oh yes,” he said to your closing and locking the doors. To turn back to the guys with eyes shifting over Eddie answering his mental questions on what he had missed of the intruders above what the guys had given of a basic description. Though mainly to calm Venom that the threat was aimed for Peggy and not yourself or his children.
Norma however drew your focus in a move to guide you to the dining room table, “Your friend had to leave before supper?”
“Yes, she’ll be at Mass tomorrow with more friends of my brother Steve’s.”
James asked, “You okay with that? We can stay home.”
That had you chuckle, “Right, because she would never just bring them here.”
And he smirked back at you playfully answering, “You set the rules. You want them barred we won’t let them in.”
Dawn said, “I just can’t believe she would come here knowing she was being followed.”
“Well I suppose there is the off chance she didn’t know. Seemed afraid of the woman at least, had to be sneaky or something to scare her.”
Victor murmured in French to keep Norma from hearing, “Don’t have to be sneaky to get a shot off in my chest.”
James teased, “Fairly big target to miss a couple feet away, now his head, be hard to hit that in reaching distance.” Earning a smirking glance back at him.
Dawn said to Norma’s confused glance their way, “Suppose we’ll just have to make sure these friends of Steve’s won’t cross any lines.”
.
The purple floral wrap dress you chose that hung past your knees was smoothed over you to sit under the cardigan you used to keep warm on top of the jacket that was eased over your arms and back. Sure to have your hat in place down the front stoop you strolled to join the others in town for the joint trip to Mass between your relatives. With his arm around your back James kept you close in the sight of Stark’s car driving past. While on the sidewalk outside the church Peggy stood with her signature blue dress and bright red hat to match her lipstick outlining the easy grin she gave you in the move to lead the staring group of guys behind her inside. Into the pew a row back to the left of yours across the aisle they settled. Each of them luring stolen glimpses through the service until the town and Priest especially got a chance to interrogate the newcomers who seemed to keep their focus on the family that everyone hoped would just be left to their privacy to live out their lives.
Once Mass was over however and your family took turns in the chance for confession the Brocks were the first to swoop in to begin the questioning. Gina especially smiled in her step towards the group and asked, “Passing through town?”
James Montgomery took the brief murmured conversation Peggy and Dum Dum Dugan were having about the proper time for him to put his hat back on to answer, “Yes, we’ve come out to pay our respects to Steve Rogers’ and Bucky Barnes’ families.”
Her husband asked, “Really? You knew them well?”
Pinky Pinkerton said after glancing back to Gabe Jones, Jim Morita and Happy Sam Sawyer who were ushered prior to Mass to sit on the far end of the pew on their move to join the group again, “We served together, though Steve never mentioned he had a sister, or any family at all really. Said he was orphaned.”
Mama Brock said in an unamused scoff to the memory of how her adopted daughter was treated, “Selfish little boy wouldn’t know family if it slapped him in the face. Lucky we never got our hands on him after he kept leaving Bunny out on the steps.”
That turned Peggy’s head, “On the steps? He actually left her on the steps?”
“Even went so far as to argue with the Judge that gave him custody to send her away so he wouldn’t have to have legal custody of her right in front of the poor thing before he was sent packing. To actually want to send her off anywhere unknown on the verge of a war to who knows what end how cruel can you get to do that to such a sweet child?” Mamma Brock then huffed feeling herself ready to begin shouting mumbled in a try to keep calm, “I have to go check on my pies,” and joined the others on their way to fetch the food cooked for the block party and her daughters began to list slight after slight that had their hearts sinking for both of their friends.
Including a stop to view the album of Sarah Rogers’ funeral where the guys understood by the captured look on your face just who Bucky was haunted by. The younger sister he encouraged Steve to abandon.
Peggy asked after the album was closed and added to the shelf of funerals of families within the past decade, “I don’t see Steve’s album. There’s one for Bucky.”
Ambrose said, “The Catholic church does not give suicides funeral processions.” That dropped Peggy’s jaw, “Father Thomas only insisted upon giving any words at all over the grave for Bunny’s sake when he knew we knew she was alive and with Eddie.”
Jim Morita, “Where did everyone think she was?”
Gina, “She was assumed to have run off with Eddie, but we clarified she got into a good school in Canada then they got drafted. Until she got shot she was listed as a POW though by the Canadians, we still have the telegrams our cousins received. War offices learned she was with Eddie through the field promotion papers and picture of the planes and tanks she took out first time she got shot.”
Dum Dum Dugan, “Well, I guess in his own way Steve had to have left her something decent for how she’s managed since the war.”
Ambrose’s husband said, “Steve left everything to the church. Even Jaqi’s things, she didn’t have a red cent to her name or home to come back to except for ours. Father Thomas is the one who set up the inheritance to be transferred to us to watch for her.”
Howard from the back of the church had crept forward and asked a question that hurt the group even more than anything they’d heard before that he had to confirm you yourself had told him, “Steve really call her a monster?”
Ambrose, “When he called her anything at all. Barely spoke to her at all unless it was a shout on where her change for food was or eyes were on him from people he wanted respect from.”
Howard, “He pick on people often?”
Gina, “After how his dad treated him and Sarah all he wanted to do was fight, even after she married Jaqi’s dad.”
Howard asked in a look over the albums, “Which one’s her dad’s?”
Ambrose, “Father Thomas gave it to Jaqi, only keeps them a decade. The one for Steve’s dad as well he found tucked away from when Sarah died.”
Howard asked, “Her dad a good man?”
Gina and Ambrose chuckled and the latter’s husband answered, “The pinnacle of perfect father and husband. Never raised a hand to anyone or any creature. Used to call Sarah his Greatest Treasure and Jaqi his fair Queen of the Cosmos, drove Steve up the wall. Worked and saved for his studies and a fund for his girl to study after him at the best schools. Even paid for Steve’s tuition for art classes at the community college.”
Jaques Dernier asked, “How does Bucky fit into this? Why did he hate Bunny? What did he get out of it?”
Gina’s husband answered, “He got Steve’s focus all to himself. Didn’t have much of a home he wanted to go back to at night. Steve wanted an escape and gave Bucky the most devoted buddy he could ask for.” From there the group led the others out to the party where two identically dressed girls with painfully familiar eyes stopped in their way with wide smiles.
“You knew our brother?” Stories of their war hero brother were shared to be confirmed that the guys were stunned they had heard you shared researched bits learned just for them to keep their hero. The new stories the guys shared were adored especially by their mother who in your exit of the church gave you a grin and watched your approach.
She said to the guys in the walk closer in a moment of distraction for the girls, “She’s been so kind to my girls, for how my boy and her brother behaved. Don’t you be rude to her. We owe her that much.”
Howard asked in a step away lowly to meet you before you reached the others, “You haven’t broken the bad news to the girls?”
“I’m not in the business of destroying heroes for little girls. They deserve memories of a brother who loved them and died ensuring they were safe.”
Howard, “How can you stand it, that truth you can’t say?”
“Everyone in town knows who is old enough to. Their cruelty dies with them.”
Bernie and Benji when their friends had called them waved and made their ways to the seats saved for them to share some of the excitement while you stepped forward accepting handshakes and introductions of the group that each of your family nodded in their own naming. Mrs Barnes left soon after to join her own friends to shift the focus of the group back to you.
Marigold, Petal and Teddy however called for food while you focused on the newcomers that joined you at the closest table mainly away from the crowds to the start of the music. “So, you knew Steve and Bucky in uniform, must have left an impression to bring you all out here.”
Gabe said, “Well, they were pretty special, least till we heard about you and Eddie.”
Jim Morita, “You really turned Panzers to marbles?”
“Among other things.”
Howard, “And she’s being stingy on the weaponry. I’ve even been asked to see if I can duplicate it. Magnets however are surprisingly difficult to master.” His eyes looked you over and he said, “How you made it in one piece with magnets that strong I have no clue. Did you know they can cause heart failure when they pass a certain grade?”
“Human body is comprised of iron in the blood, along with other traces of metal throughout the rest of the body, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, molybdenum, and cadmium. Part of how x-rays and sonograms work magnetic fields reacting to the body.”
“Not hard to bypass.” Happy Sam Sawyer chuckled out, “Don’t you remember, we heard the soldiers we came across all said they’re aliens.”
That had you smirk and thank the young Brock kids that brought your drinks over then darted off to play again. “Close enough,” you giggled and lifted your drink to take a sip then lowered your hand to the belly that shifted and drew James in a grin of his own to steal a stroke of your belly.
Jaques began the sea of congratulations and Dum Dum asked, “Did you plan on returning to school? You seem due soon.”
“Due closer to summer actually.” Parting his lips in confusion, “Triplets.”
Howard said, “When we’re done here Jarvis has our gifts for you in the trunk.”
“You didn’t have to bring gifts.”
Howard nodded, “Oh yes I did. Down right rude not to. Good thing I buy spares or Peggy’s sharing of the triplets would have left me in a lurch to have enough for all of you.”
“Fine, but it better not have gemstones or anything flashy or you’ll end up wearing it.”
Again he smirked and Dum Dum Dugan asked, “Any clue on what you’re having?”
“Girls,” James answered, “Hopefully just like their mom.”
Eddie said, “My sisters and cousins mostly have boys so when Dawn and I had Marigold they loved the new wave of girls, my sister Ambrose is having a girl too and can’t wait for hers.”
You smirked and said, “She’s really excited to go through this with me. Even debating coming out to Canada when we head back for the summer.”
James Falsworth asked, “Why stay in the city while you are carrying so many babies?”
“My courses.” You said, “I’m going to stick in it as far as I can through this semester. Might work it so I can leave a month early, just over four months, so possibly April to June depending on how impatient the girls are they’ll be showing up and the space and quiet will be better for me have them.”
Peggy, “How strenuous are your classes?”
“Not very, a majority of them are on the same campus and the Professors surely will be as accommodating as they keep trying to assure me they will be.”
Jim Morita asked, “What’s it like, being back here, after everything that happened?”
“I think the oddest thing was how everyone had just taken to the new last name. But I think Mama Brock had something to do with that, not to mention the papers.”
Eddie said, “They knew we needed a new name. I think remodeling Bunny’s home settled everything. Let everyone know she’s home in her own building she bought.”
“Technically-,” you tried to cut in only for Victor to cut you off.
“We bought it for you. Your name is on the lease now and when it’s legal it will be the only one on it.”
Peggy, “The whole house?”
James nodded, “Same with the comics and her bank account and just about anything we’re hoarding for the eventual turn over when we can.”
Howard said, “Might take a while to get there.” Though he smirked at the pointed gazes from the brothers around you mingled with Eddie’s unamused brow tick.
“Be a fairly terrifying time for the Starks of the world for me to have my own empire.”
Howard chuckled and fired back, “Oh no, then I might actually have some competition.”
Dum Dum Dugan asked, “What’d you do with the weapon and suits you built?”
“Well I certainly didn’t bring any weapons back from the war aside from a knife James found for me.”
Gabe, “So, what happens if someone shows up on your doorstep wanting those blueprints?”
“I may be pregnant but I can still throw someone around a room,” making the guys chuckle and Peggy smirk to herself.
.
From the party to the house again now with the guys the tour continued with each admiring the pictures you had posted from Steve and Bucky’s trips to shows in murals with ticket stubs and autographs.
Peggy’s focus in a glance to the other room however shifted from Eddie’s smile down at his son. Who was faking claws at the air and snarls that had Venom’s face pop out with a toothy proud grin in a lift of the boy he then lowered to kiss in the return of Venom to sink back again, to the trumpet that sat polished on display. That had you ask, “Do you play an instrument?”
Her eyes met yours and she nodded, “Piano, Mummy insisted. Made Michael keep up with his sax.”
Her grin dimmed and you said with a stroke of your hand on her arm, “Boys rarely stick to practice. Steve missed most of his, though about half came by his passing out or rehearsals that triggered his asthma.”
Pinky asked, “Steve really was this scrawny?”
You nodded, “And he hated every minute of it. Eddie and me used to get a chuckle I might have been bigger than he was in his uniforms. Pre-Captain mode that is.” You paused and asked, “He ever sketch anything? While he was over there?”
“Oh,” Happy Sam Sawyer patted his pockets until he brought out a small journal, “Just a few small sketches, the rest is some sort of scribbles we couldn’t make out.”
Opening the book to one of the notes you snapped it shut saying, “It’s a cipher. You need the source book to translate it. Some boys used to take their notes and read them like they were dirty novels even if they were on toast to taunt them for not having a wider circle.”
James Falsworth asked, “Do you know the source?”
“The Hobbit.”
Jaques, “The bedtime story?”
You nodded, “Funnily enough, I gave Steve the book they used to hide in.”
Jim, “Why not translate it?”
“Oh I can read it, and I don’t think Peggy would appreciate the content.”
Peggy paused a moment then asked, “It’s, about me?”
“Yes,” you said and lifted the book a tad, “And by the notes I am guessing he didn’t get as far as he’s writing about. You could very possibly be flexible but I doubt even then his day dream would be plausible.”
Pinky, “Wait, all you did was glance at the page. How could you read and translate it that fast.”
“Photographic memory, and I can read novels in minutes,” you glanced at Peggy saying, “I’ll read the rest later and if there’s anything less imaginative and respectful I’ll write it out for you.”
She shook her head and said, “I doubt there would be anything sentimental in there. Your brother was not overly expressive of his affection until the drive we took to get him on that plane and the radio transmission afterwards, even then, rather simplistic, trade of a promise then static.”
“Well if I do ever find him wandering around in the afterlife I’ll punch him for that. Downright a crime to not woo you properly.” You teased making her smirk your way.
Jarvis upon return from his third trip to the car gave Howard a nod that had him smile and smooth his hands together, “Gift time!”
“Anything with gems-,”
“And I’m wearing them, I remember.” He said with a smirk guiding you to the front room where you eyed the trio of crib kits that by the brand were expensive and had you in an open mouthed gawk at the smiling inventor, “I won’t accept no for an answer. Only the best for the daughters of our greatest asset for this country’s future.”
“Asset?” you asked.
“You know what I mean,” Howard said. “With your help ladies are set to give us old boys a run for our money.”
Victor, “Why’d you buy three cribs? Must have sparked some rumors with that purchase.”
Jarvis said, “Oh, for that I bear the name on that invoice. Sparing Mrs Stark that scrutiny.”
Howard said, “Though she has seen the catalogs and now is considering children with her husband number two.”
James muttered, “Ouch.”
Howard swatted his hand, “I was a means to irritate Daddy. No matter she’s picked a fine replacement more fit for the suit and tie brigade.” He patted his hand on the crib box closest to him, “Paperwork is nearly done as soon as he finalizes on his house she will pack her things and you will have tons of cover headlines to distract from your lovely little parade of geniuses.”
James, “Least you haven’t broken a sweat over it.”
Howard, “Oh we signed a prenup,” he looked between you both and said, “Which I’m certain you both won’t need.”
Victor, “Oh I’ll kill him before so much as a weekend away comes up to think things over.” Howard chuckled and pointed at him assuming it was a joke only making you smirk behind a stroke of your finger along the side of your nose. Though to a bold set of kicks your hand outstretched and landed on Eddie’s bicep and you let out a sharp breath.
“Ok, I need a minute,” you said in a turn that had him guide you to the nearest bathroom.
Howard looked your back over and James drew his gaze by saying, “They kick and her bladder is almost always trapped in the middle. This the one with the side that comes down or the solid wall model?” That had his grin return in James’ move closer to crouch and look over the diagram on the outside of the box that Victor joined him in inspecting, “Oh this one’s nice. Good solid sides won’t take off a finger if it drops like other models.”
Victor, “We can always make a set of steps if it’s too tall so Pipsqueak can reach inside.”
Jarvis, “Would it prove to be too tall we could purchase another set.”
James shook his head, “Nah, no need. She can adapt. Doubt she’d accept the second set.”
Victor, “Or even let you up the stoop with it.”
Howard, “What about Canada, you need a set there.”
James smirked, “We’ve already built a set for home, Jaqi helped with the finer touches but let us cover the basics off our experience for what would be the safest designs.”
Howard said, “Wow, you sound like you’ve been through the whole parenting schtick before.”
He didn’t need the answer in their telling continued silent stares at him till one of the guys smiled and said to you in your return, “Your hubby says it’s a safe model.”
“Even if it wasn’t the guys can easily make some changes in the install. Should be nice, I do like the round half circle top to the ends, could have some nice crochet covers from Gina. Maybe a nice quilt too for the bed the Brocks can fix up for us. One of the cousins do enjoy stuffing them.” You looked to Howard and said, “Thank you, Howard. Now, no more gifts.”
He scoffed at that and rolled his eyes only making Jarvis say, “I will do my best to remind him of that, Mrs Pear Howlett.”
“No jewelry,” you said to Howard as a flat rule that deepened his smirk in your knowing he would find a way to shower funds onto your family he’d now spread a sort of fondness onto even more so upon discovery of the link between you and his major successful project your brother turned out to be.
Dawn broke the circle by calling everyone in for tea that let you all relax in the living room until the group all had to leave with promises to come back again. Though in their absence relief came from not having the presence of questions on your lost brother and the fact that you now could have that much needed pear you had been forced to put off until the lunch that was readied upon the moment of freedom.
Straight on to bed comfort was found in solace lounged in James’ side reading off tidbits from the stack of history books Elliot had been dropping off weekly to guide you by century and culture to feed the growing appetite for reading that your pregnancy was enhancing. Mixed between those were journals from those of the Beserkers who had lived through those times including the few saved items from assumed lost libraries wars had threatened and been recorded to have destroyed. All of which could only aid in the growth of your mind, though every bit of it seemed to be familiar, a notion that pleased both him and Herc that old memories were being tapped of a time when you were present there as well to observe those moments throughout history even with your physical being in hiding.
.
“Odd,” you muttered in smoothing your hands over your chosen shirt to have been stolen from James’ side of the closet along with his flannels you’d adjusted the hem and waistband to a tie instead of the usual buttons he agreed upon so that you would be comfortable on nights you wanted to wear pants until yours could fit again.
“Odd?” James asked having lit the fire in your bedroom to the sound of the wind outside picking up to cover the street with the thin layer of snow forecast that would enforce the use of Victor’s car that was promised to you to prevent threat of slipping upon travel to Columbia and back again.
In a shake of your head you moved to the bed and folded back the covers, only luring him closer with head tilted slightly to the side. Softly in a sigh you replied mid lift of your leg to kneel on the bed to begin the crawl to the middle, or at least as close to it as possible while still remaining close to the edge in case of bathroom trips. “Power’s gonna go out.”
“Well with the wind like this, not far from imaginable.” His eyes looked over your face in his move closer when you sat down readying to arrange the pillows to perfect the spot for you. “Unless there’s more to it?”
“I can feel it. In the power lines. But the storm isn’t near as bad enough to shut it off. We’ve had worse storms than this.”
“How can you tell?”
“It’s,” you sighed again, “You remember that storm out in Palermo where the lightning kept circling over the ocean and it was so close it had your hair on end?”
He nodded, “So it’s like a static?”
“Something like that. Soft fizzle like soda bubbles travel through the wires. Just odd.”
“Well you won’t be cold, and breakfast will be easily fixed up even without lights.” He said in the motions to help tuck you into the comfy nest that he snuggled closer to your back with a shrug of the blankets higher over you both. “Don’t you worry.”
“Just hope it doesn’t get too cold for Whiskers.”
That had him smirk and settle his head behind yours on the pillow, “Furnace is powered on gas, won’t go out with the electric, same as the cabin. Whiskers will be perfectly warm and thanks to your metal layer inside the walls all our pipes are extra insulated. We won’t let our house go cold.” After a moment his hand covered yours and he hummed, “We all promised to keep him and the puppies warm and safe, we won’t go back on that.”
Mid yawn you started to say, “He has a schedule to keep,” which only had him chuckle to himself and close his eyes to the inch of your body back into his chest.

Power Over Me
Lipstick mark series part 5
I’ve been obsessed with writing for the last two weeks. Thank god! I was so tired of just staring at blank documents. I know this series may not be the best planned out, but I love just getting my ideas out for it.
In this chapter it’s basically just fluff. All the fluff I’ve saved up for the last five years of writing for Wolvie is right here.
Rated PG

“Pregnant.” His arms folded across his chest. Maddie’s eyes were closed as she tried to keep herself from tearing up. To be a soldier, a sleeper agent. Everything she wasn’t in this very moment. “I thought you said you took the pill?” He brought up the obvious question. “I was. But It was bad. The place I get my monthly prescription from had a mix up and didn’t tell me until today. And that’s when I took a pregnancy test.” She shook her head as a tear rolled down her cheek, trying to free herself of everything’s he was feeling. “If I knew I would have told you sooner.” She reached her hand out to put it on his forearm until he moved back. The action broke her heart. “Logan I promise I didn’t intend for this to happen.” His eyes glanced to her, his lips in a straight line. “You know I can smell a liar? I’m pretty good at it.” He paused putting one hand on the bar. “I’d know if you were.” He grabbed a stool and sat down. “I’m not the fathering type. Never have been, but this is my mistake as much as it is yours.” After giving the bar tender his order, his gaze returned to Maddie, her posture slouched and beside herself. “Whens the kid due?” Logans throat went dry as the words left his lips. She swallowed, her heart was still beating wildly. “September.” September, it really wasn’t that far away when you’d think about it. Logan thought for awhile, he could get a job, he had an old connection when it came to work out in the forest. “How long are you in town for?” The question came as a surprise to Maddie, She cocked her brow looking at him confused. “I saw the text from your superior. I know ‘yer leaving.” Jaw clenching, and spirit breaking further, she thought back to that morning where everything was like a dream. Something she’d always wanted. Something that come again, she wouldn’t waste. “I leave tonight.” Another tear fell, as her head dipped to hide herself from him, the shame set in the longer she sat there, that is until she felt his hand tilt her head to meet his gaze. “Madelynn. Do you want this baby?” His eyes were serious, his tone almost like a politician addressing the people, yet gentle enough to know he was only talking to her. “I do.” The glass of whiskey he ordered came and he took a long swig. “Come with me. We can leave this behind.” He assured her. “And even if we don’t work out, I want to make sure I’m there for that kid. If You’ll let me.” Putting her hand over his, Maddie let another tear fall. “I can’t do that to you. I just showed up one night. Logan I’m not worth risking anything.” Logan wiped the tear away with his thumb and was quiet while he stared into her eyes for a few moments. “I think you’re wrong. Whenever I say something I’m sure of it. I’m not going to make you choose. But you do have a choice if you want it.” Leaning in he kissed her forehead. Laying her head on his shoulder, all Maddie could think about was running away. She wanted this. She wanted him. “You’re the only person I’ve ever loved.” Her voice broke. “I don’t want you to be wrapped up with the likes of me. Logan. I’m not who you think I am.” She sobbed as she held onto him with a death grip. “You didn’t think I knew who you were?” The dear in her eyes set in as she drew back slowly. “What?” She couldn’t say anything else and that when he started talking. “I know who you work for, I know who calls you, I know who you’ve been in contact with. They didn’t tell you I can smell everything did they?” A wry smile, and possibly a playful one appeared on his face. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to get involved. They gave you to me as a mission because I was the ideal woman you would want. That and I was top of my devision until they transferred me from different departments.” Her tears by now had dried and her eyes red. “I want to clear everything up. All of this was real, I mean everything I’ve said.” Logan nodded, staying silent for what seemed like way too long. “I believe you.”
_
The nights were quieter now. All you could hear was the wind and the tree limbs swaying as they were pushed back and forth. A hand draped over Maddie’s midsection as her breathing was deep, a large bump which had not been there six months ago. Logan couldn’t sleep, which was normal for him. He thought about the past, who he was, his wives. His son. Who he was didn’t matter. Or did it? Six months ago he knocked a woman up and told her he loved her. It took him years to open up to an individual. She held his heart, and he held hers. He rolled over and sat up, resting his head on his palm as he gazed out of the only window in the room. How long will this last? He was living in bliss. Everything he wanted was in his grasp. Normality, for who he was, for what he was. The woman behind him groaned, as she did most nights now, either due to hormones, the baby moving, or just being in slight discomfort. Her groggy voice called out to him. “Logan? What are you doing?” He gave a grin and laid back down getting comfortable and pulling himself closer to her. “Just thinking.” She laughed through her nose. “You’ve been thinking a lot these last few nights.” Reaching for the covers, Logan pulled them over both of them. “I’m just, thinking about the kid.” He sighed. “A kid.” She rolled herself over to where their eyes met under the dim light of the moon. “It still doesn’t seem real does it?” Raising his hand he brushed through her curly hair, it tangling between his fingers. “You don’t seem real sometimes.” She laughed again, sitting up on her elbow. “I’ll show you I’m real again if it helps.” She leaned in kissing him, and as he kissed back he smiled. “I remember how we got into this mess.” He pulled her down with him so they could both rest. He stared at the ceiling and closed his eyes listening to her breathing. “Your son is kicking me again.” She mentioned trying to get comfortable. “My son?” He scoffed. “Our daughter.” He mentioned while his hand found her back. “Why do you want a daughter.” Maddie questioned kind of annoyed at the accusation. He hummed his laugh this time. “Because I want a daughter. Boys are too much trouble.” She rolled her eyes. “And what makes you think girls aren’t.” He shrugged “Good point.” Taking his hand without saying another word she placed his palm where the baby had been moving. As he waited and felt for the baby to move again, a little nudge against his now Wife’s skin, made him draw a short breath of amazement. For all the lives he’d taken, all the sins he’d committed, he did not deserve this life. “I hope they choose a better path than I did.” He offhandedly said. “So do I. All we can do is guide them. Hope they don’t get knocked up.” She laughed turning her head to him. “It was your fault. You bought me a drink.” Rolling her eyes again she laid her head on his chest getting comfortable. “Fine it was my fault, but you took me out to the truck.” He laughed. “Only because you wanted me to prove I didn’t live at the bar.” She kissed his palm as she started to drift off again. “Fine it was all me. Especially the part where you took off your pants first.” He shook his head. “You got that power over me.”

28 - Man With Claws
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Part 29
She's Human or Weapon
@supernaturalgirl30 @groovy-lady @bigbendyhorns @logolepsic-insomniac @the-big-bad-klaus @ocappreciationtag @foundationsretail
Blinking my eyes opened my head feels like a brick wall smashed into it repeatedly over and over. I try sitting up but soon realized that I couldn't move my arms or legs. Lifting my head up as much as I could I saw metal restraints holding me down onto an operating table. I started thrashing around seeing an iv sticking into my left arm making me panic. I've been in this situation before with Shaw and I refuse to live with someone like that demon man again. Gasping suddenly I bite my lip feeling some pain shoot through my stomach meaning it was the baby right before a door opened. A man carrying a clipboard walked in who I don't recognize. "At last we meet Ms. Deerfield or should I call you Mrs. Xavier?" The man questioned laying the board down taking a seat on a rolling chair pushing hair out of my face. Grunting through my teeth I spit in his direction. "Who the hell are you...Urgh let me go...I'm not your enemy!"
"Oh excuse me. Where are my manners. My name is William Stryker. And you and I are going to have some fun." He tapped some buttons on a keypad before tiny little needles injected themselves into my arms and legs. "You see my dear girl. Sébastien Shaw only scratched the surface with you. Him being a mutant himself he thought he should rule the world. I am not here to do that. I'm here to understand your power and then use it to wipe every single mutant out of existence." Clutching my hands into fists at my side I grunted feeling my chest heaving up and down in terror. Erik was right that once people learned about mutants they would start experimenting on us. End up killing us all because we are different. "So what do you plan to do with me, Stryker...because there's no mutant in this world that can wipe us all out at once."
Stryker clicks his tongue increasing whatever is inside the needles causing me to scream. Clutching my hands into fists I felt the golden power breaking through and hitting some things around the room. "Ms. Xavier I already have the person I need in mind. You see I was given a copy of your medical treatments that were done. So I know you are half telepath like your husband. I'm going to use you to rid the world of mutants." The needles retract themselves from my arms where I saw wounds in my arms and legs. Struggling for air I felt the pain everywhere in my body. Bugging my eyes out I shutter seeing my wounds slowly healing themselves where has never happened before. "What did you do to me. I - I wasn't able to heal before - what did you do!" I croaked through heavy tears wishing I was back home safe with my husband and daughter instead of with this hateful human.
"I gave you the power of one of my experiments...named Wolverine. He escaped you see when I captured your friend Mystique not too long ago. So now you're going to be my new experiment." He moves to put a needle in my head but I closed my eyes tightly entering his mind and locking onto him. Freezing him in his place I grunted creating a high amount of energy from my hands destroying the metal restraints. Swinging my legs over the bed I quickly take the needle injecting it into his body instead. A few seconds later my vision starts to blur so I started running through the lab hearing security calling out for me. Jumping over a stairs railings I moaned feeling my shoulder get a piece of metal inside it. My hair is tousled around where I forced myself to my feet seeing the red words of an exit door a few steps in front of me.
Bolting out the door I didn't stop running until I found a small town. Wherever I am there's snow everywhere so I'm definitely not around home anymore. Pulling my jacket hood over my head I tilt my head down hoping to not get noticed by anyone here. Struggling I climbed up onto a barstool laying my head on the countertop until a man spoke. "You don't look too hot there sweetheart." Whipping my head up I frantically looked around creating a small ball of energy in my hand underneath the table ready to fight. The man sitting next to me has deep brown eyes and hair where I somehow recognize him from somewhere. I just can't put my finger on where at exactly. "Luckily we're alone. Most people around here don't care too much for mutants. So what's your name?" He asked causing me to shake my hand making the energy die out. He raised a beer to his mouth taking a drink. "I'm Aurora. Aurora Xavier. Who are you stranger?" The man spit out his drink bugging his eyes out at me with a stunned look on his face. "Golden Flare...it's you." My mouth hangs opened hearing that nickname finally remembering who this guy was.
"Who exactly are you?" I questioned walking down the stairs creating some gold energy from my left palm. The stranger has dark brown hair and eyes. He raised his hand showing bone like claws appeared outside his skin. "I'm Logan and you're Golden Flare. Some call you Rora"
My heart skipped a beat mumbling under my breath knowing who the man was right in front of me. "Logan...oh my God. I thought you were dead after DC or that you had went back to your own time." He sits his glass down in front of him turning to face me giving me a smile even though it was a tiny one. "Part of me did go back. But my current self - uh me stayed here." Nodding my head I reached about to take his hand but retract it remembering my shoulder was injured. Pulling the top of my sleeve down I shivered seeing the wound was healed over like it never happened. "Rora, are you alright. You look like you've seen a ghost?" Logan asked when I met his gaze where I grabbed a tooth pick sticking it into the center of my left hand wincing at the pain. Dropping the pick the tiny wound hole closes over making me almost throw up. "Logan I - uh need to ask you a question...do you know a man named William Stryker?" Glancing over to him he dropped the cigare he had in his mouth completely shocked by my question.
Comments really appreciated ❤️

Brother Dearest Pt 53
Tumblr media
Low and sweet a hum on the breeze of dancing flowers and leaves on the trees guided you onwards, miles above the village in which a battle was taking place. Wreathed in layered salmon colored cloth to form a one shouldered midriff baring dress secured by golden bands shaped in vines to match the belt securing the flaps of the skirt on the hip high slit bearing dress, all matching the similar woven vines throughout the braids tucked within your waist length raven curls. Something drew you to the hilltop, up to the circle of stones where your kind were forbidden by tales and superstition. Somehow you had taken this walk before, from the feel of the tall grass on your legs, feet and fingertips in your walk that broke a pathway all your own. Lowered glances to avoid a hidden rock revealed glimpses of slivers of the dew left across your tattooed legs and arms. Full swirl, dash and dotted designs marked your place in the village below to match those along your brow and chin below your lips painted on daily.
Voices above in growled whispers from the shadowy mist did nothing to sway your path onwards and up to the crest of the hill, where between the stone towers deep in the shifting mist oversized bodies on all fours cloaked in thick impenetrable fur over imposing muscled limbs and a broad torso came into sight. Heads of a group rose with enough mist to disguise the breed of creature that by the snout must be related to a bear or wolf with glistening teeth revealed in the part of lips to growl words that made the hazel eyes of the right faintly shine brighter in the light of the full moon igniting the mist all around you in its reveal by passing clouds. “I know you.” One muffled explosion and all but those eyes on you faded and atop another hill you found yourself.
This time a horse below you thundered through a band of trees for a laughter filled chase of a familiar hawk. Right to the end of the rocky hill you rode then turned to head back for a ride down the pathway leading to the beach. Cries of the bird above egged you on until once you made it to the water’s edge where it flew off leaving you to scan the ocean where you saw a small boat on its way from the larger ship farther out to sea with eyes of the men inside upon you. Each sharing comments and gestures with notice of the difference of clothing and hair adornments with full face and body markers and paint while they wore metal helmets and cloaks that billowed over lighter clothes and armor. One step onto the shore and the scenery faded to a small wooden shop.
Eyes met across a goods coated counter and again the eyes faded. From time and place those eyes met yours in varied adornments, positions in life, languages and cultures, but always they were there to be found. Hidden behind each page of those journals tucked away how it felt so familiar, even to the deepest depths of the Dark Ages both of the brothers caught flickers of familiar moments while Eddie had recognized a whole recount of symbols on a shield that was somehow humorously misspelled. For a confusing blip post bout of laughter recounting the tale he was not alive to know you sat in silence until your words came back to you.
Billions of years you, James and your family had bounced all around the universe bumping into one another, hundreds of thousands of brief lifetimes simultaneously crossing paths always separated until joined forcibly by a devastating war. Once again by the opening of a door for that same lock of eyes and mental, “I know you.”

Tumblr media
“Longing,” Muffled screams came on the back end of an electric shock that caused the bound one armed soldier still physically exhausted from another surgery to mount mechanics in his shoulder, or lack thereof. Just a secondary heightened state of pain compared to the issue of a serum they had forced upon him.
Writhing and broken in a one armed struggle to crawl his way from the snowy bank he’d fallen to they had found him following invisible puddles and raindrops towards the body of a little girl drenched and walking away from him wordlessly guiding him to safety. Hard and fast hands took hold of him while his blood stained face contorted in half frostbite restrained movements to fight. All the way to the truck they shoved him in he watched the little girl with sullen purple gaze turn then watch as he was torn away.
“Rusted,” again the shocks rolled through his body between blows across his limbs and torso while through his pained gaze those same cerulean almost glowing eyes locked on that same silent girl in the endlessly wet blue and black velvet dress. Every detail the same from the long raven braid and free curls that swept across her face to the soaked tights and water filled heavy polished dress shoes casting puddles from invisible raindrops he swore he could feel sizzle across his skin by the fire coursing underneath it to every shock.
He didn’t dare mention her. No one else could see her. Or touch her. The silent child who never left him. He was odd, all the other captives could see it, those who were chosen, all fully intact unlike him, all sent up against him in sparring but lost. Every time he would mutter in Old Irish, a language he somehow knew she could speak, “Look away,” or “Close your eyes,” to spare sight of what would happen. Broken bones, blood, broken necks and piles of bodies for those who failed to live up to par. He complied, he obeyed, he remained silent to keep them from seeing her too. Now and again eyes would trail his and his rage would peak and more prospects would be lost to keep any from possibly taking notice of the phantom amongst them, like last night at dinner which led him here.
“Seventeen.” The next word came followed by seven more between blows and various searing injections to lessen his mental barriers they could slip through to order him about as they wished. Tucked in these snow capped mountains in this sea of Russian scientists and soldiers he complied no matter his fate for the sake of the phantom child he prayed with everything left in him of who he could possibly have been before that snow bank that she wasn’t something they had given him to egg him on. She had to be something deeper for how any slight movement her way made his blood boil, something from his life he had forgotten. Here he was the Winter Soldier, or going to be, but she was something more, something older than here, someone he knew and missed, daresay could have loved. Friend, sister, cousin, child, anything but theirs. He was more than their soldier and she had to be proof, a clue, a silent reminder of something they couldn’t erase. “Freight car.”
Right on cue pupils dilated and his hair shifted in the nod of his head to respond, “Ready to comply.”
Though for years of silence in a voice unable to come from anyone else he heard her speak, “Where are you?” That had his heart rate spike and scientists nearby step back with swiveling eyes to weapons in case their hold slipped until he calmed himself a few moments later and their smirks eased out to install more rules to his daily tasks within the facility before he could be trusted to be set on his first mission. Before his first try to find her. His first step to be free. He would comply. He would earn their trust. And then when capable snap the neck of anyone in his way while his eyes scanned the room in the crank of the table he was strapped to was from its angle to an upright position on its crank powered wheel base bolted into the floor he saw the outline of an arm on a sheet coated cart being wheeled his way.
“Since you seem so primed to fight, perhaps we might see what you are truly capable of.” The lead scientist spoke with a spreading sneer in the removal of the sheet to reveal the metal arm with a red star on the bicep. “And yes, this is going to hurt.”
All he could do was look away, over their shoulders to her again, with his mind receding through the pain back to that deluge he could feel every drop that slid down his body underneath his still dry pants and socks he was allowed to wear while in this exam room. Behind his clenched teeth to not cry out in a grimace from the searing pain the sounds of the room muffled to her repeated question through the growing invisible rain storm, “Where are you?”
 *
Tucked warmly in thick socks over your long overalls with metal buttoned straps easy to remove even underneath your sweater that covered the t shirt you had on just in case the sweater got too warm. With jacket on and hold of your purse into the garage you walked with James holding your spare books you did require to lead you to the passenger seat to Victor’s car he had warmed up for you to drive you in to avoid the subway. “You will do magnificent. I’m sure our girls will let you study, if not we’ll sick Teddy on them.”
That had you giggle to his chuckling stroll around the car once the door was shut while the brothers traded grins and Victor went inside to go and get Leanora for a bout of playing until Norma was due at her first class for the day in her next semester of acting courses. After the drive through the sea of people your eyes locked on the new President of Columbia outside of the Bardard with eyes fixed on each body and car being let out until James had parked and was spotted in his step out of the car to walk around and help you out.
With a grin you found your feet and said, “Well the General certainly isn’t wasting any time.”
Lowly he chuckled and said, “Nope. I’ll keep him distracted if you need a quick getaway.” His arm looped around your back and onto the snowy curb he led you to the shoveled sidewalk that led to the pathway on which the General stood in a tightening stance. “General,” he stated with a nod to the General who smirked and nodded back.
“Colonel Howlett.” His eyes shifted to you and he asked, “And how are you Corporal Pear Howlett?”
“Good, thank you, I think you’re the first person to call me that since I started here.”
Eisenhower chuckled and said, “Well, perhaps one day we might be able to bump up that status of yours. I told the boys back in Washington Special Officer Corporal Medic didn’t quite fit up to par granted the work you did for our allied forces, but in the equalization of rank between Canadian and American force ranks on your records I couldn’t get a head out of the ground to bump you out of the NCO division.”
“Well if you do that for every dame in uniform every dame is gonna want to enlist for the next go round.” You teased and he smirked through a chuckle.
“All the same, you deserved more than a medal for your role in the war. You did receive the flag for your brother, helped to fold it myself.”
“Yes, thank you, we have it in our library. Where I have your book, which my nephew stole and is using it to hold up a bridge between block castles.”
That had him chuckle through your weak giggle to James’ wide smile and the General replied, “Finally, someone putting my book to good use. Set to be a brilliant mind himself one day I would wager.”
James asked in his glance over the General, “I take it you felt the urge to settle down?”
Again the General chuckled, “It would appear there is a great deal of Democratic good to be done in these schools with the minds of the future command of this country. I’ve been granted a good deal of time to do my own studies as it were to prove my hypothesis on how to improve upon our education system of higher learning. And what better place to do it than Columbia University. Would have chosen Princeton to be closer to Einstein as an alternative to be in proximity to a mind such as your own, however my wife prefers New York over New Jersey. Go figure, closer to the pictures and arts she admires with a group of friends as well to keep her company.” His head turned and to the sight of the Deans and Board on their way to greet him he grinned at you again and nodded his head, “I will let you get inside. Apparently I am to be briefed on my itinerary for my first day in office.”
That had you giggle and say, “Have fun. New Dean of Columbia is a great improvement over the last one.”
To which he replied, “I shall do my best to slip within your path a few times as possible to ensure that you are doing well and the press isn’t bothering you.”
“Thank you.”
James walked you up to the door and there kissed your temple sweetly in the hand over of your books, pausing to say, “If you need to come home any time just call we’ll come get you.”
“I know, now go, and no sitting by the phone either, I’ll know if you did.” Making him chuckle and lean in for a second kiss to hold him off for more until he could have you at home again before his turn to head to the car as a pair of ladies walked with you through the door one of the Professors opened for you.
To the car he went while you strolled through the building to the first of your classrooms. Once there if the baggy coat and fuller face the awkward stare at your seat you then used a bent leg to lower down safer to settle in the sudden turn of the Professor had you clued in that she had at least a clue as to what your coat was hiding. Ice threats by the second course where you would have to cross to the Columbia campus were moot by the grounds crews that had shoveled and salted and shoveled again to make the pathway safe. Short and sturdier, heads turned in notice of the changes about you. And by the time you made it to your Trig classroom the Professor inside amongst your favorites here grinned to himself in his path between the seats to hand out stacks of booklets he had prepared that aided in his pass near to you to say, “Welcome back Mrs Pear Howlett. How are you feeling?”
Sharply you let out a puff of air, “Like a puffer fish, so far so good. No stubborn kicks to knock me off balance.”
That widened his sentimental grin and he nodded, “If you require a better seat you are always welcome in the one next to my desk, nice and plushy with ample support.”
“Don’t think I am commandeering size yet, though give it a few months when I’m twice as big then I may need to invent a pedal powered lifter to get me up on my feet again.” That had him chuckle, “Something portable. Could help women out everywhere.”
“True, hopefully by the time we get you to that point we could have worked out a schedule for you to finish this semester off early. We have had talks to that effect, all of your Professors. Any day you need off you have an accepted extension of absences fully approved for all of our females during these circumstances.”
“Thank you for letting me know.” You said on your way to your usual seat with your curious usual group of ladies who like the other female student body were still puzzling at the change your appearance was going through.
For this class and Calculus afterwards you sat comfortably through the lessons planned accepting the same assurance that any time off early this semester would be gladly accommodated to based on your needs. Though mainly for the status you held as one of the few students able to learn while not in class by advanced notes and examples for new techniques.
Lunch however came next and once outside your eyes fell to Portia’s driver who flashed you a grin and gladly helped you into the car that drove you next to Portia’s waiting spot where she hugged you tightly and shared all about her classes so far and carried on in doing so to the usual diner. One hearty meal and you stole a break in the bathroom where you finished off the pear you had called from home to help calm the girls who had begun to kick and stretch from the meal.
To Columbia with your amply attentive lab partners who signaled to others along the way in their joint task of assuring the apparently far along mother to be that the rumors were true and there was absolute proof those stories were a terrible lie. And by the time you had taken your seat in your Chemistry course you could tell your Trig Professor had told the truth and this Professor was clearly up to something that would not allow you to remain invisible this semester through this.
Proven fully by his opening speech, “Welcome back, glad to see you all survived New Years, every class contains a few among debate to do so, I am proud to have been proven wrong this time around.” That had you smirk through a few chuckles through the room. “Now, in front of each of you are detailed calendars I have printed for each of you to clearly state when we will be engaging in the varied styles of labs, quizzes and exams. Normally I do not give such detailed notes, yet seeing as one of my students especially is requiring extra attentions.” His eyes shifted to you and you straightened up anxiously on your seat, “Seeing as you, Bunny, are in a delicate state and we mean to grant protection for each of our students I have noted each of the harmful chemical based labs that give off harsh fumes or scents that might be harmful or irritating to you. On those days you will be free to take up private study and then read up on the notes for them taken by your lab partners. That way you can keep up with the materials covered to be knowledgeable by the next quiz or exam. And I will have a spare assignment that you can complete on your own for credit for the attendance that day.”
“Okay, thank you,” you replied with a kind grin and he got back to the first step of the first lesson, through which your partners agreed that they would be proud to aid in any spare help you might be requiring as you’d helped them so much the first semester already.
Chemistry bled to a trip into the halls, where your break to relieve your bladder landed you a minute late for your Psychology class. Rarely late just the glance at the clock had you knowing that you would find yourself locked out by their usual tardy policy. However a group of knowing male students had encircled the Professor in his usual countdown of the clock through the final minute after one of the female students mentioned you had gone to the bathroom. “Oh come on grow a heart she’s gonna be someone’s mom soon,” seemed to stick out the most for the Professor who was amongst those who were skeptical of the assumed pregnancy yet to be publicly announced.
Though by the time you made it to the door that was meant to be closed and he had shooed off two fellow late males. And in a single glance due to the coat folded over your arm that held your books and bag pressing your sweater to a pronounced belly from there to your eyes he stepped back, “Come right on in, Mrs Pear.”
“But, I’m late.” You replied in a soft squeak widening his grin.
“I will not bar you from my class, and if you require any breaks simply take them. Apparently I have been advised to grow a heart.” He added with a pointed gaze to the male student who said it that was in one of your mathematics courses earlier.
His eyes shifted to you however when you stepped by him and said, “You’re twice my size if you didn’t have a heart you’d be an impressive new breed of jellyfish and good at keeping secrets to not have been discovered by now and on display.” To himself he smirked and eased the door shut he then locked in watching you stroll to your seat and lower down into it with a clear smooth of your hands over said bump when you got comfortable.
Literature came next with a cross back to Barnard where you met up with Portia in the hall who asked, “How are you feeling?”
“Good, hungry but good.” Making her chuckle.
“Well I am so happy you could make it the whole day.”
“Still have at least four months to go, or three at the least.”
“I know you will get through it with flying colors. Haven’t seen a challenge that can take you out yet.” That had the both of you chuckle and take another turn for the classroom mingling with your fellow classmates until you got to the seat that again with a bent leg to lower down upon you settled into place and slid the leg out to cross your ankles and ready a notebook and pen to take notes. New syllabi were added to your notes and for the full class you sat listening until afterwards when your Professor came forward with a secondary list for you of assignments you could complete and turn in early to work around whatever physical limitations you would be faced with.
Onwards to the meeting for the paper you went flashing Elliot a wave on the way for his signal he would linger until afterwards to check on you. The first official meeting back brought more wide grins from the ladies who once the meeting began and right off after sharing the response to the welcoming edition of your paper from the new President of the University they got into sharing new ideas for the next edition.
.
“How are you faring? Ankles and all?” Elliot asked upon your arrival to his classroom.
“Ankles are good. Still hungry, no slammed doors or other accidents so far.” You said securing your jacket around you. “How are you doing? I feel like most of what I’m asked is how I’m doing and I forget to ask everyone else.”
That had him chuckle and say, “I am well. Found another new article on some new artifacts discovered in Brazil.”
“Sounds like fun.”
“Oh yes. More of a shipwrecked expedition lost for hundreds of years, should be coming to New York soon and I am on the short list of a group of Historians who are welcomed to inspect the items.”
“Why not work in a museum then?”
“I prefer teaching, sharing stories. Would you enjoy museum work as a curator or something to do with research of pieces?”
“Perhaps. I do like studying history. Keep getting these flashes when I read the journals you sent, like I was there, in all of them.”
“Because you were. A good number of your family were after the majority of our race were set to sleep until your return. All over the world, hundreds of different lifetimes and locations until you felt you were ready to return.”
“That-,”
“It is possible,”
“I’m not saying it’s not, just, makes things a bit complicated.”
“You are out to learn and live and be free. There was something about this time that you felt needed. I have been speaking with Asteria, from your wedding, and she has shared the other Amazon off of their island came here to the world of Men to fight Ares,”
“The God of War?” You asked and he nodded.
“Yes, apparently he was corrupting mortals to a bloodlust which triggered the First World War. She killed him.”
“You say that like it wouldn’t be difficult.”
And he chuckled to your playful smirk, “It wouldn’t the Greek Gods and the creatures who birthed the legends are well beneath our strength here. The Asgardians are the only ones who could hold a candle to us. And there must be something in that one blip that made you feel now was the best time to return. Something you have noticed about what was happening or going to happen. Although for now the importance is we are all here and moving forward to our new future.”
“Whatever it is it will have to make room, because I’ll be needing it. First go round triplets, who knows how many are coming next.”
That had him chuckle again, “It has been a great long while to wait for a family. And you will be gifted as many as you have the capacity to love and shape to adulthood. There will be ample room.”
“Lets hope so.” You glanced his way as he readied his bag to shoulder and asked, “Do you miss your family?”
“Oh terribly,” he replied then tapped his chest over his pendant, “however I can speak to my children at least whenever I wish. And they are pleased I am working at your side until they return. Always wished to meet you themselves. You should hear them chatter on about the meal they wish to prepare upon their arrival for the meeting.”
“Well I can’t wait, and if I do end up pregnant again at that time then food will most certainly be welcomed.” Making him chuckle.
“Now you and I both know that food will be welcomed either way,” he said sharing wide smiles with you, “We all have stomachs that start at our toes. Go up to fill our shoulders and arms then fill the other side. Part of our endearing charm.”
“Oh yes, eat the planet out of house and home.”
“We would never, our tech is way too advanced to allow this planet to go barren.” He added with a smirk opening the door to his classroom for you.
“How long is the list of experts that museums pull from? Takes what, years of training and field study on top of that right?”
“Yes, when you are finished carrying your trio I could bring you along to one of my stops as my assistant if you would like?”
“I wouldn’t want to get in the way.”
“Never a chance of that, I will keep you posted on my trips and you are welcome to any trip I take you feel an interest in. Could help with that History degree you are working on. Eight possible fields for degrees, us Professors do have a bit of a pool going as to which you will choose.”
“History, Art History, Mathematics and Sciences most likely.”
“Fair spread. Very fine choices.”
“One more year, then the vote. If they don’t get scared off by the babies. Already I’ve been shuffled to independent studies for when harmful labs come up in my Chemistry course. One half of next month I’ll be startling the librarian by clearing off the shelves.”
“The vote will not be affected. That is a very good thing. If anything your refusal to take a semester off has been more impressive than anything. And who knows, you just might be relieved to have the extra long lunch breaks.”
“Who knows, James might find it as an excuse to come sneak on campus for my long lunches. Still a bit timid on letting me go off alone.”
“We all face that when our wives are carrying.” That had you look at him, “Can’t help it. Our bond goes beyond rings and legal documents. Please don’t take this as overstepping, but any bond you had grown to share with Eddie over the years I am betting when you met James that bond came swifter.”
“It did,”
“Yes. The bond is in our blood, our bodies, each of us have special gifts and often the mother of our groups can share those powers, and when in need can locate us anywhere far greater than we can hunt them down. Often reason enough for other races to not approach us in hostility, our women in vengeance for their loved ones could tear worlds apart. Wish I could say that will lesson with each child, however I felt no lessening of that effect in our younger children.”
“So, fingers crossed I don’t become a life long academic.” Making him chuckle to your hushed giggle in another turn.
“Should not take long. I have heard a good deal of our courses are by correspondence for mothers only making it easier to complete various credits for your future degrees through your summers if you wished.”
“Do you think I could have my parents visit over the summer? Dad said I could call him whenever, is that a whenever, whenever?”
“Whenever you wish. The doorway is open.”
“I just don’t want them to miss it.”
“Neither would we,” Once in the chilly front doorway he opened for you his hand dipped back to offer an arm for support on the stroll down the few steps towards James who stood beside the warmed car with an antsy shift of weight on his feet until you were down the steps.
Across the walkway you went to split from Elliot who said, “I’ll leave you two alone. See you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow.” A couple steps later you flashed a grin to James in his reach for your books and bag, “Hey handsome.”
Smiling back he leaned in to claim a kiss and hummed back, “I take it you had a good day by that look.”
“The day was good. Apparently I will be attending half of my Chemistry classes for the rest of the semester.”
“Really, out of the cold,” he said guiding you to the car door he opened and helped you inside to close it and hurry around to join you. “You asked to attend half or were told that?”
“Told, apparently there’s a good deal of possibly harmful labs this semester so my Professor wrote out a list of dates I can take personal study periods and I can catch up with my partners for their notes so I won’t be behind. And my psychology Professor didn’t lock me out when I was late from a bathroom break.”
“Good, if he had I’d have been there to punch him in the face.”
“Some of the guys in my class told him to grow a heart. Everyone in school knows is my guess by how they’re staring.”
“They stare because you are stunning and they can’t hold a candle to you.” Which had you giggle in his pull away from the curb to start the drive home, “Anything else happen?”
“Not much, more of the same, opening lessons and a few expected papers to write due in a few days. How was everything at home?”
“Good, Whiskers was pleased at the warm house and lack of disturbance to his schedule, you were right by the way he growled at Vic for blocking the door to the basement.”
“I may not understand what he says but even I can catch onto habits. Cats are like toddlers with sharper teeth and claws.”
“True. Puppies are good though. Norma seems to be excited, got another role, starts filming in the spring so we have some time to prep to watch Petal for her filming, and Vic as well.”
That had you look at him, “She doesn’t want him to go?”
“Well she got flustered, started crying and somewhere between the gasps for air we made out that she doesn’t want to leave six babies for me and Dawn to care for while Eddie’s at work and you’re at school. Plus she says they both shouldn’t be miserable without her while the filming is going on.”
“We would have been fine,”
“Yes we would have. Petal is very well mannered when it isn’t raining or loud or windy,” making you giggle at the growing list.
A shift of your belly had your hands settle on top of it and lured his hands, “Not far till home girls.”
His eyes scanned over you in the shift of your legs, “Are you in pain?”
“Just a cramp.”
“I’ll rub you down when we get back and run you a bath.”
“I should be ok,”
“No okay, you need to be laid out and pampered until supper is ready and then cuddled until morning.” That had you smirk at him and he said, “No negotiations. You work hard. It’s my job to pamper you. I know for a fact you would never try to deprive a man from his livelihood, far too kind hearted.”
“You don’t earn a livelihood for pampering me.”
“Oh yes I do. I am partial owner of our comics, which we run together and when you are happy you come up with the best ideas for new editions.” He said that triggered a trade of playful glances between the both of you.

Brother Dearest Pt 49
Tumblr media
“I brought you something I think you will like,” Edie said in Polish with a smile that spread to your face as well in curiosity. From a new suitcase she settled on the table in the living room where she had found you at Eddie’s insistence you stay on the couch and relax that drew you to scoot forward and eye the folded fabric inside the case. “There is a good bit of fabric available in the markets, some less bold than some may care for on a fashion stance, however these will all be quite lovely for what is intended.”
“Intended?” You asked yourself with eyes shifting to Erik carrying a sewing machine table he settled along the wall until a better home for the crafting could be found. “Oh, for my maternity clothes.”
She nodded and said in a show of some sketches she pulled out as well, “I believe these will suit what you had mentioned in your letters. We wore clothes similar to these when working in our gardens in the town we grew up in, both with shorts and long pant legs to suit your needs.” The overall pattern had you look over their every detail to see how you would be able to put them on.
“And how would you secure them?”
To a set of buttons on the front she pointed to the neckline just under the straps with a few that have tie up straps as well with a ribbon above the belly to help support the top. Each which would be forgiving the larger you got and by use of old newspapers patterns were made up that you helped to pin onto the fabrics to cut out while Edie would stitch together. Buttons easily you could add from the supply she had brought. Though each and every shift of the needle through the fabric had your eyes fall on your bare ring finger now too far swollen to force the engagement ring and wedding band that now sat upstairs after a teary failed thought to keep them on your necklace weeks prior. Nearly four months gone and about a half of what a single baby carrying mother would be the size of, far from large and still it seemed your body wanted to play puffer fish once given the excuse to after years of starvation and exhaustion.
Edie having caught your stare on her way to add another pair to the pile on the table said with a kind smile, “Swollen fingers are a common symptom.”
That had you look up and shake your head with a smile, “I know. Norma and Dawn both wore theirs on a chain.” To the drop of a tear down your cheek you fanned your face mid giggle with a folded bit of the pattern beside you, “Ugh, crocodile tears.”
She shook her head and said, “Not bad tears at all. The changes are hard to adjust to. When is the Doctor coming?”
“Oh, he has some patients and such and will see me after the New Years.” Teddy mid giggle tottered through the room making you bring the pair with the needle still in it close to your chest and away from him, “Ooh, careful,” you said eyeing his path with Olive and Pepper after him. Whiskers however came in next to hop up beside you avoiding the chill that came in from James and Victor’s return. Norma had joined Dawn in their day with her family while Eddie focused on the paper. Between the brothers however your eyes fell on David in his bashful smile of an entrance to the sound of Erik’s chuckle to Teddy’s finding him in his turn to hide. “Hey David.”
Tumblr media
“Hello. How is our lovely invalid.” That had you scoff and him chuckle, “I kid.” Timidly he came closer and asked, “I hope you don’t mind I was a bit curious once I heard you are carrying three babies. How are you feeling?”
“Oh,” you let out a breath, “Not bad. Hungry, always, and I sleep like a bear as much as I can. When the room doesn’t flip on me that is.” He gestured his hand to your side and you nodded moving a set of the patterns to Edie’s gentle acceptance of the pair in your hands to finish that button to Victor’s lift of one of the completed pairs of overall shorts.
David said to his glance at your belly, “Your babies seem to be growing well.”
“Yes,” you said in a settle of your hands on top of the belly visible in the settle of your hands on top of your sweater that had helped to mask its full size at least a little. “Certainly growing while I puff up like a scared cat.”
To that he smirked and accepted your settle of his hand on your belly he’d been afraid to touch that widened in the feel of just how round it was. “No movement yet?”
“Not yet, thought there was a kick yesterday but then my stomach made this awful gurgle noise.”
James chuckled to Victor’s stating, “Then we had to open a window as the stew we made came back with a vengeance. Last time we risk basil for Pipsqueak.”
“I said I was sorry,” you said and he shook his head mid chuckle to James’ settle beside you on the couch.
James said with a smile, “No apologies, been meaning to scrub the tile in that bathroom for a while now. Usually it’s Vic that gets sick in there.”
“It smelled so good too, which is the weird part.” You said and glanced at David who had a puzzled look on his face in a reach for your wrist which showed you didn’t have a pulse. “Sorry, ya, it’s one of my, things, Doctors can’t hear my heartbeat or lungs or the babies unless I link minds with them. Don’t know why.”
In the meet of your eyes a ring of silver flashed in his to match the silver dots in yours and his eyes lowered to your wrist now at the feel of the pulse and trio of heartbeats he heard through his contact with your belly. To a disbelieving scoff he looked up again to catch your eye in the dim of the ring of silver in his eyes and the spots in yours. “You are a marvel.” That had you grin and settle your hands on your belly and follow his gaze to the next pair of long pants pair of overalls. “What are those?”
“Pants I can wear instead of a tent.” That had him smirk your way and you said, “At this rate I’d need something huge to cover my belly and the skirts no doubt would get caught or folded up and flash my backside each time I stand up if they fold the wrong way.” To that he chuckled and settled in to the accepted social break to spice up your day in the first week so far that the town had been limiting to one or two visits a day in turns having all been filled in just how pregnant and likely to need of rest you were. “Plus the shorts should help in the late spring when it gets warm.”
David, “Well I am certain that you will be amply comfy in them.”
“Yes, and if the other ladies have a problem with it I’ll just start to cry and they will feel bad and never bring it up again.” You teased making the group chuckle in relief at your good mood. Daisy soon enough came to tag along on David’s visit and also drove him back to his office in time for his next appointment with ample news to pass on through the town of your high spirits in your cozy abode to wait out the next round of snow that was on its way by morning.

Alone now in the living room to the side you shifted with pillows adjusted for comfort and sighs galore on another glance to the stack of books you had finished from the daily supply our of the crate they had bought from second hand shop in Alberta they had been rationed to keep you distracted. Within ten minutes however on the way back from a bathroom break James in his arrival to feed the fire spotted you mid pace with hands on your hips from one end of the room to the next to simply have some movement for this cramped up day. “Restless or do you need a back rub?” He hummed in the bend to toss another couple logs on the fire from the log room they had stocked the day they had arrived.
“Oh,” you sighed out in another turn towards his end of the room, “Little bit of both.” That had him chuckle and smile to the slight blush on your cheeks. Still a bit embarrassed from the fumble of a try to be intimate the night before you’d ended up flustered and just curled up in his arms after the sensitive gag reflex of yours had struck again in a try to pay your ever so attentive husband some well deserved amorous attentions that shot that dead right there in almost getting sick on him.
Right up to you he strolled and across your back in his stop in your path he hummed, “I love you, let me rub your back.”
“You always rub my back,” you just about whined making him chuckle again.
And he leaned in to press his lips to your forehead that was next met by his, “And I will rub it again, as often as you like until my hands fall off and have to grow back and then I will rub it again. And as far as your attentions to me I love you and babies can make our nights in a bit awkward but never less than spectacular each time.”
Your head pulled back and you said, “I almost got sick on you last night.”
“And it was spectacular,” that had you roll your eyes and he hugged you to his chest with a kiss to the top of your head, “I got to hold you all night, pretty spectacular on its own just to be yours. The impossible love of mine who is growing our babies. How could I ever not love a moment with you?” He kissed your forehead again then stepped back, “Which reminds me.” Your brow arched up and to the mantle he went where you eyed the ring box he carried back to you.
Your lips parted as you said, “James you did not buy me jewelry!”
Lowly he chuckled and opened the box that had you gasp, “My wife cannot wear her wedding rings and is very upset about that.”
“James I’m a puffer fish!” you said with eyes on his again.
Tumblr media
He shook his head, “No you are not. And these are sized for your finger now.” You huffed and could only watch his lift of your hand to glide the eternity band of diamond sideways hearts in white gold settings that sat perfectly at the base of the finger with the new engagement ring on after. The latter that had a large rectangular diamond surrounded by two square diamonds on a white gold band which settled next in an awe strike of a pair you didn’t expect. When your eyes met again he’d lifted the hand to kiss the knuckles beside the new duo and he said, “It hurt you not being able to wear your rings. Got you these when I saw your difficulty with your rings last month.”
“Last month?”
He nodded and said with a smile, “And I even dropped them by Father Thomas, he loved the chance to bless the rings for us so you can have a symbol of our marriage you won’t have to wear around your neck. So no tears or arguments.” He said in a stroke of his thumbs across your cheeks to wipe away the tears that had fallen after having tossed the box to one of the chairs, “Because if your fingers do grow again I’ll just buy another set.”
Laced with a sniffle you chuckled and reached up to cup his cheeks for a kiss he melted into completely ignorant of the tears that fell over his thumbs and end of his nose in the lingered first kiss and five hungry pecks afterwards that broke in his chuckle and move to wipe your cheeks again. “Now, let’s rub your back,” he said guiding you to the couch where he settled you comfortably sideways and carefully settled behind you, careful not to bother your back with a heavy plop. And in the gentle start to a backrub where he asked, “Do you like the rings? Apparently it is much harder than it is here to have jewelers in New York to design rings how you want them.”
That had you chuckle and say, “No, they like to keep a hard hand on the diamonds thanks to what they have to pay to keep them safe in the shops.” That had his eyes on you and you giggled, “The big Italian families mainly control diamonds. How much they charge you?”
“Seemed they wanted to charge me more till one of the old guys in the back said something to the salesman.”
“Ah, you must have gone to Grigor’s then.” His brow arched up and you said, “Mom treated his son in the hospital, kept the Doctors from ignoring one of his symptoms that could have killed him and he let her pick a pair of earrings as thanks. He likes to wave when I go by and ask how I am, always has since I started to head to museums alone.”
“How’s his son?”
“Down in Spain? I think, or Jamaica, required a tropical climate for his lungs. Has five kids though his wife just moved back last spring to be with her parents so he’s happy to meet the brood.”
“He must be upset to be away from his kids and wife.”
“Eh,” you said with a tilt of your head that had his hands pause to adjust again, “Not very. From what I hear he’s got a bit of a harem and she stuck it out until she could raise funds to fly home. Whispers are he caught something in his harem and he’s not got long.”
“See, brothels never mean well,” making you grin to yourself and steal another peek at the rings. “So was that a no that you don’t like the rings?”
“The rings are beautiful. Thank you.”
“Almost got laughed out of the shop for the hearts till the old man stepped in.”
“Yes, ovals or tears are more common as rare shapes nowadays. Rarely hear of hearts.”
Erik with a poke of his head in the room asked, “Did you want your pear now, Bunny?”
“Sure,” he nodded and popped out to come back with a pear in hand and smile eyeing your new rings above your belly you were stroking again. “Thank you,” you said in accepting the pear while he sat down and claimed your left hand.
“Very lovely choices. And impressive to show off when you get back to school.”
“Oh yes, may just distract from my belly. Be the size of a hippo soon enough.”
Erik shushed you and gave your belly a gentle stroke, “Don’t you worry on that you just keep growing little ones. Nice and healthy until it’s time for us to hold you and give your brave mother a good rest.”
All you could do was smile and lift the pear for a bite that had his smile grow in the clear elated change to the trio who soaked in all they could from the treasured fruit that was fueling their health as well as their mother’s.

“Hello sister,” Venom said on your easy stroll down the cold steps with hand on your belly in a hope for some cocoa and a grilled cheese to lull you back to sleep. On his next stroll across the room he had been pacing from side to side on you took notice of Marigold in his palm laid against his chest clearly in a means to let her parents rest from her usual fussy manner.
“Hello Venom, Goldie not sleeping again?” You asked releasing the stair railing to enter the warm room lit by the fire he had been feeding to keep the house warm for the animals and the usual nightly pacing you now had joined in on.
“Our little one is merely growing. The quiet winter has done her good.” He said in a turn to join you to the kitchen. “How are sister’s little ones?”
“Good, heartbeats are strong, they feel to be growing. No movement yet. Can you hear them too?”
“Venom can feel them,” he said with eyes that met yours in a glance up from the kettle you were filling. “Similar to how you feel heartbeats. They are why Venom cannot crawl on his Sister as he used to, would only cause them pain. For now Venom will ensure none harm his Sister and her little ones.”
“According to Elliot and Herc I could still blast some people a few hundred yards away if need be. And if I could urge myself to.”
Lowly Venom chuckled and replied, “Fear is a worthy hindrance with little ones. You are strong even in your fears.” Softly you sighed in a move to set the kettle on the burner you switched on for it. “However we do not carry the little ones. Far easier for us to say fear is worthy when a Mother’s fear is insurmountable.” Your eyes met his in your move to gather the bread, cheese and butter to go with the skillet you lowered from the hook it hung from to the cool burner for when the kettle was through boiling. “Your fear could cripple others, your pain could drive others to madness and despair. Venom has the best Sister, and her little ones will have the best mother. Eddie has shown Venom how Sister was mothered before Sarah grew sick and our Teddy is proof mothering is natural to you.”
“Still have to get the trio ready to be mothered. Have you read midwife manuals?”
“Sister is no fleshling. This birth will be the hardest merely for fear. We are here. Venom will help with any pain once the little ones are born.”
“There’s no medicine they can give me that could do more than a second of relief.”
“Pain is always there. We cannot protect Sister from pain. But Venom will be here with Eddie at your side. Sister saved our son we will protect your daughters.”
To his words your hands smoothed over your belly asking, “They do sound like girls don’t they? Fast heartbeats.”
James’ voice in his entrance however turned your head to his smiling self looking you over in his sweater, baggy flannels and thick fuzzy socks in your moccasin slippers with hair halfway slipped from the braid he helped you with hours prior. “Good, more girls the merrier.”
From the door he came over and sweetly pressed a kiss to your lips in a single move trading the kettle for the skillet to handle the grilled cheese for you. “Do you want some cocoa? I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“You didn’t. Vic is on the roof making goat noises again,” that had you giggle and he said, “Cocoa would be lovely, thank you,” he said watching you mix up the cocoa powder and water that you added some milk to even the taste out then stared at the empty spot where the marshmallows usually sat in one of the cupboards. “Vic bought more marshmallows two days ago. Should be in there.”
Instead of the marshmallows you eyed the new pack of gravy mix that turned you to the pantry for the duo to watch your search end with a trade of the mix and a new bag of marshmallows. “Guess Petal distracted Kitty.” The corner was split and an amusing amount was added to both mugs after the second confirming glance that Venom did not want mug himself but did accept a couple marshmallows you floated his way he snapped up then kissed his daughter’s head in her grumble to the jerk of the muscle under her head.
James while you clipped the bag and put it back in its proper home asked, “Any thoughts for names yet?”
“Not any traditional ones,” you said after a brief sip on the drink that had you put a hand on the counter to the same feel of another small flutter you felt to the trio’s heartbeats changing as they do every meal to soak up more nutrients to grow stronger.
“My Xander was named after King Alexander, Vic pulled names from records we read on Spartan Queens and Kings. The world all got the big filmed wedding broadcast all around the world, screw the whispers traditional is out the window. What names did you want? I know you’ve already picked full names.”
Venom said, “At least share the inspiration, surely the stars will whisper their names into infamy.”
“I actually picked star inspired names.”
James smiled as the bread toasted in the buttered skillet, “Even better, spill, three names. Go.”
“Aurora Nyx,”
James, “Ooh, love it already. Next name?”
“Belinda Rhea.”
Venom, “Both stunning views Venom passed to find Eddie.”
You nodded and said in James’ glance your way to encourage you to continue, “Nova Carina.”
James, “Perfect names.”
You nodded then said, “I also like Rigel Nash,” you said making him smirk at the clear boy’s name. “Just in case.”
To himself he chuckled in your next sip then hummed, “All incredible names, girls or boys they will be more than treasured.”
You nodded then asked, “For last names?”
“Pear Howlett,” he answered without a pause then glanced your way in turning the sandwich over, “The family name. Vic is going flowers for their girls as is Dawn and Eddie so let’s go stars for our munchkins.” One sandwich was finished followed by another that you ate and finished off with your cocoa before it was time to head back upstairs to the bed still warmed by the fire James had fed on his way down to find his cuddle partner who had gone missing while he slept.
.
1948. New Years came with a crash, literally, from your hand the mug you had intended to fill with tea fell to the floor and shattered to pieces. Loudly Teddy gasped and his hands at his sides rose in terrified fists to your hunch forward. From the table a chair slid over by your mental pull and both knees settled on the seat to the child’s call, “Daddy!!” Forward onto the back of the chair you leaned with forehead on the hands clutching the wood to ground yourself while the men already on their feet by the break of the mug raced to the kitchen.
Once in the doorway they saw you lost to the sudden shift that you felt of the room that required you to get off your feet as soon as possible. “My Bunny?” Teddy whimpered in a pat of his hands on your bent leg closest to him that had your hand lower to land on his hands for a comforting pat.
“I’m ok, Teddy.” You panted out.
“Jaqi?” James murmured in his ease behind you while Victor got to picking up the mug pieces Teddy had stepped around. His hand however on your side with the hand from the pat on Teddy’s yours moved it to the now actively shifting belly that dropped his jaw. “They’re kicking!” he exclaimed with tears pooling into his eyes mid spread of his ridiculous grin in his second hand moving to your belly.
“Kicking,” you sighed out and lifted your head to hold onto the chair in the lift of your head with an eye roll to follow. “Full on attack at once,” you added in Eddie’s teary eyed crouch to lift Teddy to help his toe top failed reach for your belly.
Erik now in the room moved to the oven saying at the whistle of the kettle, “I’ll fix up your tea, Bunny.”
Dawn and Norma followed Edie to join the others who circled around you with turns in placing their hands for feels of the active belly that was enough a shock to put you off balance. “Thank you Erik,” to the table James and Victor carried the chair you were on and helped you to turn around and settle in until the snack they fixed up for you was completed then you were moved back to the couch once you had steadied in their relax again.
In all the excitement to the best of your abilities Teddy was filled in to how the babies you were carrying now that they were big enough had chosen to stretch at once in a move that had made you a bit off balance. That however had his brows adorably furrow and in a glare and point to your belly he said to your girls, “You be nice to my Bunny. Or you’ll be in big trouble.”
Up into your side you lifted him for a welcome nestling hug and kiss to his forehead as you said, “Thank you Teddy Bear,” to the others’ wide adoring smiles in the moment that Victor captured with your camera.
.
Morning came soon enough with noon shortly after in the middle of another flurry that had both brothers off in town helping alongside Eddie some of the older neighbors to finish some minor repairs. Both Norma and Dawn however were tucked in bed with their much needed naps. The girls were mid lunch handled by Erik and Edie while you sat cross legged on the rug building a castle of blocks with Teddy who giggled the higher the structure began to grow. “We need a hat!”
Teddy exclaimed and you giggled in asking, “Hat?”
He nodded and pointed to the top of the tower on the side, “King’s house had a hat.”
“Oh, a flag. There’s some paper in the library I’ll fold us up a flag.”
He nodded and tottered off with Olive right behind him in her usual habit of shadowing the boy when on his own and your eyes turned towards the door that Victor entered, shivered and stomped with eyes cast your way once certain the door was sealed shut again to not let out too much heat. “Hey Pipsqueak, you’re on the floor.”
“We’re building a castle, Teddy is fetching paper for a flag.” You said to his strip from his outer snow protective layer that left him in trousers and a button down shirt once his snowy things were hung up.
“Well every castle needs a flag,” he hummed on his way over to sit beside you with smile spreading in a subtle scoop of the camera along the way to snap a picture of you sat down beside the castle that you giggled in notice of his plan that granted him a wide smile for the captured moment. “This’ll be among my favorites.” With legs crossed he plopped down beside you and watched teddy walk back with the paper from his coloring cubby with the dog behind him with bucket of supplies dangling from her mouth.
“Kitty! We need a hat!”
“Flag,” you again repeated and the boy nodded and again said, “hat,” that had you and Victor chuckle and you asked in settling the paper out beside the bucket Olive put down to  hop up and lay out on the couch again beside her daughter Pepper still lost to her nap.
“What do you want on the flag?”
Various flags between the three of you were folded up and colored then placed atop the castle, all of which that slid close to falling off when James came home that had the momentary scowling boy stand up and smile mid shout of, “Unc Jim come make a hat!”
James smiled mid strip and once his clothes were hung up he came to join you all and post sweet kiss on your cheek he leaned in to join in on the fun that Teddy, now on his lap was guiding him through. Until his own flag was added. Lunch called and Victor lifted the boy while James helped to keep you steady in the unfold of your legs to climb from your knees up on your feet again.

Weeks of snow and in the break of 1948 came on the cusp of a fireplace smoldering with the end of needed firewood to warm the cabin that now was packed up for the long drive back again. Erik excitedly was back to finish his final semester in his high school with Edie planned ahead to head back to the market and get more material to make more of the outfits to add to your supply she would mail to you in Brooklyn. Just a whiff of some herbs and sauces in the drive back through the Italian block signaled a mental warning to the other cars to turn and stop to get something to eat before the final few blocks to the unlock of your home.
“Bunny Howler, sight for sore eyes Happy New Year.” Vinny Tortelli said upon your entrance into the warm eatery with his family scattered in a couple of the booths who turned their heads to nod in welcome to the surprising guests.
“Happy New Year,” you said and flashed a smile to his aunt and grandmother who came to the counter with spreading curious smiles of their own. “I know it’s close to closing.”
Vinny shook his head as his grandmother shook her head and ushered you inside in a path around the counter, “You all come in with those babies out of the cold and eat our food.”
Vinny’s cousin said, “We’re open another few hours anyways our food delivery for next week is running late.”
Outer coats were hung on the hooks around the large curved booth you were taken to and following a chuckle the shift of your sweater that folded a bit around your belly that had Vinny say, “I see someone’s been productive.” That turned your head and he gestured to your belly in your scoot aside to let James sit on the end of the booth, “Won’t be long before you can’t hide that bump when it warms up.”
Softly you chuckled and rested your hands on the table with fingers around the menu that drew his eyes to your new rings as you answered, “You have no idea. Barely halfway and I’ve puffed up nearly to put some full term women to shame.”
He smirked and asked, “I take it that explains the diamonds too? Heard you were up for a new gift with some sparkle.”
In a half smirking glance at James you said, “James’ idea to make me feel better on my others not fitting.”
Vinny chuckled as his grandmother now returned with some fresh breadstick baskets she eased between the couples at the table and said, “I knew those papers were trash. Who would trust a frog over strong genes. Snack on these and we will feed you and your growing baby, sure to be big one.”
You smirked and after a skim of the menu gave your order with the others as Vinny chatted with you all about the stories and what Eddie’s plans were concerning the stories the Daily Bugle could run about your change. Food however had the company to focus on their family and business at the sight of the truck that drove around the block to get to the back alley that they stood to help unload. Large servings and a helping of desserts with a paid bill later and off to your home you went for a welcome end to the trip.
In through the garage everyone unloaded the truck and cars into the lit and warming up house by everyone but you in your nest in the living room with the napping babies and pets. With the puppies and Mr Whiskers however you made your way up to your floor to simply take off your boots and get some sleep.
.
“Bunny!” Ambrose said with a smile wide in her hurry to close the distance between you in the morning drop in by the whole brood.
Gina however joined her in saying, “Off your feet! We found you a few nice dress patterns for Mass we want you to pick from.” Hours the family soaked up all they could and helped to plan what you might want for a nursery as they were all trying to think up ways they cold help on those grounds. Each kick between snacks had groups of hands on your belly until the time when you would be bundled up for the Wednesday Mass that would break you back into the pattern again. For now at least a wrap dress that Gina had made to fit for you from one of her old dresses to tide you over underneath a warm sweater and jacket helped to disguise the belly that Father Thomas took all that it had in him to not shout the change in your life that other former mothers had already guessed. Just your face alone that had given the change away with the new larger rings to drive the assumption home.
Mr Maisey however, father to three sets of triplets, was the one to break the ice and topic and caught you on your way to take communion. Just one look and he had a knowing smirk on his face in saying, “This is so familiar.”
His eyes shifted to James’ over your head, which wasn’t hard to do before but was even more so at your reluctance to wear heels since the kicking began to lessen chances of tumbles. In a chuckle James simply admitted to what was already known, “Triplets.”
Mr Maisey in a deep throated chuckle nodded and said to you, “Our youngest have a cold, but next week I’ll send the Missus round to pass over some pointers. Not that you need them for when they’re here, you’re the only one who was able to grant us nights off when they were fresh at home.”
“Thank you. Any tips would be helpful and she’s the only one to know the stakes.”
His grin spread and he said, “And don’t worry about the stories they tell you about needing a cut to have your babies. Had two sets born on their own and the last set took a cut merely because they tried to make it last a week on us and the older six at home were giving their gramps hell when we were gone.”
That had you giggle remembering that was how you were hired by the elderly man on edge who needed some backup of his own having seen at Mass and in town how you had helped with the younger Brocks since your adoption into the brood. “Yes, I remember how unruly they tried to be. Hopefully I can have a good birth, easy is out the window, but so far everything seems to be going well.”
“That’s good,” he said having taken notice of Mrs Cahn behind you who in a clear sign of withholding a secret and a smile tucked her lower lip between her teeth until she could pass on through her knitting circle just what and to whom you were talking about. Everyone had been up in arms over the story and with little to sue for from the leak in the lab of your exam it seemed to the town that there would be no justice in this for the woman whose reputation had been scuffed. Yet now evidently pregnant and so with triplets no less was a huge bitten thumb towards the Times for their story now that was publicly to be known to weigh less than the paper it was printed on.
He turned to Father Thomas however at the front of the line and in kneeling accepted his communion while his eldest six children on his left accepted from the younger Priest in training that handled all the children’s communion. James was next accepting in a trade of wide knowing smiles through his bend to the cushioned bench with lips parting for the communion wafer that they closed around to the Father’s hushed murmur. Up he rose in a cross of himself and stepped aside with eyes on you ready to help you down and up only to see the Father say with a smile, “You may stand.” Softly you chuckled to yourself and stepped up to the bench to accept the wafer and smile around it trying not to cry in his saying, “Congratulations. Truly a blessing and an answer to so very many prayers.”
All you could do was smile and turn in a cross of yourself. Stepping aside to let Eddie take his turn as you joined Victor to the side where he held Teddy and Marigold for Dawn and Eddie while Norma spoke to Ambrose about plans for your next appointment this weekend when she would come by again to continue sharing this experience with you.

Brother Dearest Pt 48

“What a beautiful wedding,” you said to Princess Elizabeth upon her rounds through the guests. “And your gown is stunning.”
“Thank you. Papa paid special attentions to the embroidered patterns on the design.”
“I can imagine. And it must take such practice to dance with a train.”
She smiled and said with a hint of a chuckle, “Oh yes.” She looked your face over asking, “You seem in good spirits and health.”
That had your grin creep wider, “Well I’m certainly not dying.”
Curiously she smiled wider, “The stories are false then?”
“Not to be grim, Princess Elizabeth, but I’ve been shot three times in the war, a tiny bit of metal is no danger to me, even if the poisoned frog they chose by chance had been killed by my exam.”
Softly she chuckled, “Well I have to admit that it seemed a bit farfetched to imagine something about a frog could mean you would be dying.” She looked you over again, “Was it negative? Were they able to tell? The fertility issue, was that also imagined?”
Subtly you stole a glance to ensure it was just you able to hear as others focused on the dancing and chatter through the ballroom, “I’ve seen a specialist, said he heard more than one heartbeat. Apparently back near Halloween I wasn’t as un-positive as I had assumed. But I promise I won’t be headline seeking and I won’t try to deflect attention for your day.”
“Oh please do,” she said and you giggled with her and she shook her head, “I cannot imagine what you had hidden on snags to your day however this, has been an ordeal.”
“Well, almost over now and you can be off to your honeymoon. Did you get your someplace warm?”
“No, we are heading for Balmoral actually in Scotland. Still quite lovely,”
“It does sound lovely.”
“We have been traveling so long on the last Commonwealth tour and Papa hoped we would remain rather close by.” Abruptly she added, “Thank you for coming, we have been terribly concerned about you. There was a means to have our copies of your book signed and a congratulations which seemed dampened by the news.”
“Well sure I’d sign as many books as you wanted. Oh, I did bring a gift for you which might seem a bit odd at first,”
“Oh?” She asked with brow ticking up.
“I found copy of a book of fairytales that my father read me when I was little. I had the hardest time thinking of what to get you, but I had the idea maybe you could take it more as a hope for one day sharing the stories with your own children. If that isn’t too terribly awkward of a gift.”
“That is a terribly wonderful gift. Very thoughtful thank you, I am glad to not have had another decoration for our household, so far we have seventy three candle stands, I suppose they will come in handy in case we have another fuel shortage this winter.” She said then changed the topic to keep the mood light, “Have you chosen a new topic for your next book?”
“No, still a bit blurry on that but they said a year or so could be waited before talks of releasing the second one I’m contracted for. There is time to figure it out at least. Do you like photography?”
“Yes, Papa bought me a camera for our future, an actual video camera.”
“Oh that sounds amazing, Victor has been talking about buying a camera like that for his baby girl. Doesn’t want to miss a moment and then he can play it back for years to come.”
“I can imagine your babies will be very happy to have so many cousins to grow with.” A subtle sign for her to move on to another guest had the trade of grins and split paths with her to another guest while you returned to settle on James’ lap as Loki was now seated in yours nibbling on another slice of the orange in his palm.
Once the orange slice was swallowed he said, “Now that wedding was atrocious. ‘To Obey,’ and to think she attended your service and chose this.”
Lowly you replied, “Their ceremony hasn’t changed since their ancestor had formed their own religion to break with the Catholic church. Not much room for change in royal weddings.”
“No less atrocious.” His eyes scanned over you, “Feeling well? Mother is pleased to hear of your little ones. You look hungry.”
“I am hungry,” you muttered and turned your head to catch a glance your way from the King who among others had stolen glances your way.
“So, as you are a Baroness now how many people are between you and the throne?” Eddie chortled as you rolled your eyes, “Come now, surely you could run these mortals properly into a much more honorable status. This entire palace, if you could call it that, is in shambles while their people are starving and cold.”
James murmured behind your ear after a kiss to your cheek, “We have a home to get back to when all this is over and plans to make.” With his arms eased more around your middle to hide a stroke of his hand across your belly that your arms rested on top of luring the Prince to look you over in an unamused huff.
“How can you bear these mortals and their petty attempts of grandeur while you could easily dominate this planet?” He asked, “Surely it must agitate you.”
“I like it here. Not all miserable. Patience is key.”
“This better not take a century for you to correct.” He replied then looked you over again and said, “Surely this is not all the food they have,” he stood and strolled through the table and towards the hall in your lean into James’ chest.
Softly you sighed to James, “I suppose if we hear screams he’s on the way to promoting me or to magic up something to eat.” A comment that had him and Eddie chuckle lowly.
Dawn through the opening door strolled with Norma, both with girls in arm after a diaper change with Teddy between them, who scurried back to you and climbed onto your lap where you smiled as he said, “You see Goat Pince?”
You nodded and cuddled him closer to your chest, “I saw the Goat Prince.” On top of his forehead you pressed your lips and asked, “Have you seen Kitty?” Teddy shook his head and you murmured after seeing everyone else in the room, “Hmm, hopefully no murder case will keep us from flying home on time.”
James chuckled only to see Victor enter the room with a plate of food for Teddy he brought over with a small spoon. Into your seat he settled and claimed hold of Teddy to help him eat as he muttered, “Honestly think I’d have walked in with a rifle to ask for more food for our boy.”
“Want me to hold her?” you asked Norma on her stroll past in a shift of the girl in her tired arms she’d been holding all day and she nodded handing you the baby girl that relaxed against your chest grumbling at her irritation for the noise and people who keep trying to pinch or touch her. “Do all these people keep bothering you Petal?” You murmured to the girl who nestled more into your chest as Dawn handed Marigold to her father and spoke with Norma. Edie meanwhile finished her dance with her son who walked her back to the seat beside you to chat about the plans for the rest of the week and Erik’s plans when he got back to school again until the usual holiday break.

To the cheers of the crowd dying off the Princess and Duke Phillip were off to Balmoral to the request of the King through an aid to a small sitting room where he was seated across from a suited man with a medical bag on the table. The King stood and with a grin motioned you closer, “Bunny, come and have a seat please. This is my personal physician Doctor John Weir.”
The Doctor shook your offered hand and nodded his head, “A pleasure to meet you Ma’am.”
“You too,” you said and settled down on the couch a bit sideways on the cushion beside the Doctor with ankles crossing and hands laced on top of your lap.
King George said, “Now we didn’t get a full copy of the papers until the pilots sent to fetch you had been asked to bring back a copy of the story. However this is a rather serious matter, the papers read it was a terminal illness concerning metal poisoning?”
After a quick inhale you said, “Well, okay, I should start at the top.” The pair nodded and you said, “For a couple months I’ve been feeling tired and my appetite has been increased and also my body has just felt daily the same as when we would march for days on end back in the war. Then I was in class and the room spun on me and I felt a shift in my belly and I could have sworn I heard heartbeats other than mine.” The Doctor’s eyes narrowed and you said, “So after school Ambrose took me to the clinic when I guessed that I must be pregnant. They did the initial exam and the Midwife said my ovaries didn’t feel like they should if I were farther on in pregnancy but she said it might still be early.”
The Doctor said, “Most likely early second month if that was so.”
“So the Doctor took a urine sample and sent it off, I go home and my Professor Elliot.” you said to the King, “Who was at my wedding and knew my dad.” He nodded and you continued, “I told him what I thought and he knows my mom had a hard time in her first pregnancy so he called another friend, a specialist from Manhattan who was there when I got home and he examined me himself. And he could see the heartbeats on one of those machines with the wands he pressed into my belly.”
King George, “Heartbeats? Plural?”
You nodded and said, “At least two, but he thinks three, which explains why I have been so tired and hungry and my body is feeling stress. Then I go to school and at lunch everyone had the papers and I hadn’t even heard from Dr Roan from the clinic yet.”
Doctor Weir asked, “Has he contacted you?”
“Yes, when I got home he was waiting for me at my house. He came in and explained that at the lab, the frog that they injected my sample into within the twelve hour window it died and they dissected it. And it had metals near its reproductive organs which someone in the lab broke the chain of custody and tipped off the press who said that because of that that I might have metal poisoning from the war and am infertile and dying. And they have an investigation going on who broke the rules.”
Doctor Weir asked, “And he is certain that you are in peak health? May I ask what condition your mother suffered from in her first birth as you mentioned?”
“Well my mother smoked, and her first husband drank and forced her to drink and he hit her before her pregnancy so the weight on her old injuries was hard on her body,” he nodded, “She had a few miscarriages as well, I’m not sure if that was from her husband or not. She never lost a baby when she married my father and she said birth and pregnancy were easier.”
The Doctor asked, “Did the specialist send off any special tests?”
“He did check me for metal poisoning and said that all I needed was just a need for a stronger diet to keep me healthy. I have another appointment when we get back to start weekly checkups until I’ve been calmed down about them being healthy.”
The Doctor, “And you had no notion you might be pregnant until that day in the classroom when the room shifted?”
“Well,” after a glance at the King you said, “My cycles had never been regular during the war but they were evening out when I got back, only sometimes in my first year at school when things got busy I would skip a month.”
The Doctor nodded, “Ah, yes that can add to the troubles, and would you mind myself doing a simple check of your vitals to ensure you are not requiring any nourishment to aid in any weakness?”
“My vitals?”
The Doctor chuckled and said, “Simply to check your eyes, around your neck, pulse, blood pressure, lungs and heartbeat.”
“I suppose.” He chuckled and began with a simple eye check with a small penlight he pocketed then softly guided you through his check along your jaw line and neck for your lymph nodes.
“Might I see your hands?” he asked and they unfolded to hover so he could check your nails. One of them he lowered to your lap to fold his fingers around the side of your wrist to feel your pulse that with a pocket watch from his pocket he timed your pulse then lowered your hand to bring his blood pressure cuff and stethoscope from his bag, the latter he looped around the back of his neck. Upon the hand he offered yours rose to let him ease the blood pressure cuff up your left arm he folded into place. Keeping your eyes on the dial he used to pump up the band the silver in your eyes along with when he took your pulse to avoid the issue of being told your pulse or even heartbeat was unable to be heard again like at the clinic. Same with the checks on your heartbeat and lungs. “Very strong. Perhaps some more tea at brunch will do you some good to keep off the chill you sound very strong.”
“Thank you.”
King George let out a breath and smiled saying, “That it such a relief. Please do keep us posted on how your pregnancy progresses. I take it summertime would be when you are due then?”
“Yes, I will.”
He nodded and from the table by his chair he lifted his copy of your book making you chuckle as he offered you the book with a pen and a smile, “Might we tempt you to sign our copies? They are incredible, you have quite an eye.”
.
Family, friends and dignitaries who milled around in a lighter mood now with the whispers that you were not in fact dying, with a few copies of your book brought out with a shared wish to have signed copies and even photographs to go with questions they asked you did your best to answer. Dinner was soon upon you after you had changed for it, the girls along with the other babies were left with the crew of nannies to let their mothers eat peacefully.
A moonlit lullaby from you however echoed through the empty ballroom at the end of the stroll to get Marigold to sleep after the firewood near the fireplace had fallen over, near to the window you stopped with view of the stables with horses on their final walks in for the night. Dawn and Eddie had gotten Teddy to sleep by means of a bedtime story as Norma and Victor had calmed Leonora before she had gone to full blown tears. The hushed Irish song itself had lured a few workers with Irish roots to hum along to themselves on their ways past. True there weren’t many working here with the reputation given simply in naming their roots and the fact that you and Eddie were openly Irish born and accepted did grant each a sliver of hope that things could change for the better. Against the doorframe James relaxed just locked in an adoring stare, grin locked on his face that twitched only to the hushed question of a passing relative from Spain, “What is she singing?”
James’ smile grew as he rumbled back without looking away, “Not a clue, but she could coax a bull to sleep with that voice of hers.”
The noble chuckled in a glance between the both of you and said, “You are a very lucky man. We may hear that song again the wireless calls for rain tomorrow. Sleep well.”
“Same to you.” James remained in place basking in the moment that paused in the click of the camera that Victor had brought in a guess you were up to something adorable, and the silhouette of you in the glow of moonlight turned to eye both men who waved to your giggling self in the start of your walk back to the pair.
Marigold was nestled to bed and the wireless turned out to be true with rain all day that played the background to the music hours the royal family led the guests on. Rather reluctantly however a mention of your lullaby found you planted at the piano to play the song that you halfway knew that Norma helped you to fill in the tune to bolster your nerves for the impromptu performance. You supposed if you were meant to be talked about this was better than the death talks and constant pitying stares in the share of another supposed hidden talent.

While it seemed the trade of a dress for a black blouse that had a large drooping bow at the neck paired with trousers that were black at the waist to the hip and bled into a lovely peach shade had stunned more than you had anticipated in the almost casual days of interacting through daily events to distract from weather. Though to avoid forcing you through the smoke filled games King George had arranged a day trip for yourself, the kids, Erik and Edie to head to the British Museum. Teddy especially loved the larger pieces as the girls slept in the loaned prams Dawn and Norma pushed and Erik listened to your sharing what you had read on a few of the paintings and displays you had read about before but hadn’t seen in person. Half past a portrait your head turned to a familiar black leather clad Prince with a creeping grin who trotted up from his lingering place in the former exhibit and said, “One of the wings has collapsed, are you aware of this?”
“Well, ya, it got damaged in the war.”
That had him shift on his feet asking, “War? What war?”
You smirked and said, “That’s a loaded question, but simply put, World War II. Hitler waged war and tried to wipe Jews off the face of the earth and spread his dictatorship across the globe.”
Erik smiled saying, “Bunny helped to tide in the war with Eddie, James and Victor. Dropped Hitler’s Nazis to their knees.”
Loki’s brow arched up and Dawn said, “That’s why we’re here, King George gave them each medals for their service in the Canadian Forces and President Truman gave Eddie and Bunny medals as well, gave Bunny the Medal of Honor. First woman officer to accept the honor.”
Loki looked you over, “Two years ago this world was at war?”
“Yes,” you all answered. Then you asked, “I take it Odin was blind to that as well?”
Loki, “Heimdall did mention skirmishes, but not a global war.”
“Well, hatred and fear is contagious and a useful excuse to attack an old irritating neighbor.” You said in a step to continue onwards luring him closer to you inspecting you again.
Loki, “You do not give the impression of a warrior, if that is part of your disguise against these mortals I applaud you for your success on both fronts.”
Again you grinned at the Prince with a giggle that Dawn shared with you as Norma gasped at a suit of armor that hadn’t been expected, that had her giggle and pass around it to move closer to your side while Edie said, “Wars won’t get us anywhere. Peace squabbles shape the world,” adjusting her shawl around her arms that had Erik shrug out of his coat to ease over her back and shoulders she thanked him with a hushed murmur and smile in a pat on his cheek.
Loki asked, “Where are your husbands?”
Norma, “At the palace smoking and playing billiards and cards.”
Dawn said, “King George arranged for our day trip here for some fresh air for Bunny and the babies.”
Loki with furrowed brows came closer to you in your turn to inspect a portrait hunched over your shoulder to ask in a whisper, “Why do they call you Bunny?”
“Kids when I was little called me jackrabbit when I was little so my mom started calling me Bunny to kill their joke.” He simply blinked and you said, “It is fitting, I am small and quiet.”
Dawn, “And adorable, can’t forget adorable.” She giggled as you did and he simply lingered near your side for a few more quiet stares at each of the next displays.
At least until he asked, “Children mocked you?”
“My parents were Irish Immigrants.” Your eyes caught his and you said, “Very low on the social scale labeled as drunks and criminals not expected to do much in life.”
“Truly,” he muttered and paused in a confused blink.
“Then I was orphaned by the time I was twelve and my brother Steve abandoned me to fight in the war. Eddie and his family took me in. And even with them looking after me it didn’t help against the Italians and non-immigrant families. Kids can be cruelly honest or simply cruel based on what they are taught.”
“Yes they can,” he murmured to himself with eyes drifting off a moment recalling his own displacement against his fellow generational peers including his own brother. “Your brother did not stop them? Before the war?”
“My brother called me a monster, he didn’t care what other kids or adults said about me or to me. My mom was a nurse, dad was a student, just barely scraping by and when my brother died he left everything to our church so I wouldn’t get it. I found James and Victor in the middle of the war, I’m sorry if you were expecting a fairytale.”
Loki, “Every fairytale has painful meager beginnings to the brightest Queens.”
Erik, “They all end the tale at the weddings however.”
“He has a point.” You teased to the softly huffing Prince walking with you to the next stop a few feet away.
Loki, “When are you returning home again from this war torn city?”
“Tomorrow morning for a full day flight.”
“Surely we could return you within moments using the BiFrost.” Loki stated.
Dawn, “King already booked the plane, need a paper trail for the trip home again or that will only bring up questions as to how we got home. People do know us here.”
“The limitations of this world are infuriating.” He muttered making you giggle again.
.
Tucked asleep in your seat on the plane dreams of the stolen trip to the stables with Teddy lingered in your mind. With a mental hope that one day you might be able to take up the King’s offer to take you on a ride the next time you came out and weren’t in such a delicate state while they took the guys on a hunt. “I love you,” the words murmured into your dream that had slowed to slow motion with muffled gunshots of the imagined hunt where atop the horse loaned to you Bucky’s back appeared in a cloud of smoke. Eerily he turned reloading his gun only to be hit in the face by a falling duck coating him in feathers and blood. A firm hand on your sensitive belly that felt to have been rubbed for hours had yours lower to grab it and move it to your back in the shift of the dream to an odd drop into a lake for a swim to a floating dock where Teddy was building a castle from his blocks.
For those conscious however the men smirked at your slumbering move of James’ hand off your belly in a roll from your back to his side where he nestled you against him, covering the gap between the seat so you would be comfortable while his hands moved focus to rub your back instead. James with a widening smile the more you clung a bit tighter to his side. He had an echo of a reminder from his first wife that too much strokes of the baby bump could leave the skin sensitive as Victor even had to be reminded by Norma yet even without so much as a poof of your belly yet he just couldn’t help it and hoped to be able to feel the very first signs of one. But for now he would try to limit his attentions to at least just once a day to not risk making your skin so sensitive that he would be forbidden to touch your belly at all. Lotions were the solution that he could come up with that at least daily he could help to prevent that situation.
Back in your peach pants and a light blouse pictures were snapped of the drowsy stroll from the plane to the cars waiting for you. Shouted questions were ignored and simply you all focused on the return home. Cases were taken upstairs with food the main goal and a chance to just retract to your respective floors. “You okay?”
James asked upon joining you in the bedroom with view of your hand undoing the top button on your blouse with eyes locking on yours when your head turned to face him. “Ya, just want to change.”
“Did you want a bath?” he hummed in a move closer to plant a tender kiss on your temple with his hand that smoothed down your back.
You shook your head, “No. I don’t want to be wet right now,” that had him smirk in his move to ease your shirt from your waistband to help with the buttons. Knelt down your shoes were next with socks after that just left the pants, all to be tossed into the hamper already full he’d use as a distraction while you were at school.
“Why don’t we try some lotion?” he asked to the sight of a few pink patches on your legs in the deflated sigh to plop down on the end of the bed in just your panties and bra. “Don’t want you to get a rash.”
To the sink he went in the bathroom to fetch the tube of lotion that he returned to kneel at your feet and work his way up as you said, “I think there was something on those sheets.”
“Must have been their soap,” across his palms he smoothed a dab of lotion that in the lift of your foot he worked into your skin. “Smelled strange, like some cheap perfume or potpourri. Might have been from the room being unused. Doubt they have visitors there very often.”
In his thumbs working up your shin to start a massage while his palms slicked the rest of the lotion on them you said, “I don’t get why they need two castles, well, three. They have Balmoral in Scotland too. I mean, we need a castle,” that had him chuckle to himself, “How many babies we’ll have. We need the room they’re just bouncing around castle to castle while people are freezing, did you hear they have a gas and coal shortage? People are going to freeze and they have three castles. No doubt they won’t so much as shiver all winter.”
He nodded and said in another move to get more lotion that upon coating your skin the pink patches eased back to peach as it soaked in the coating in the open air free of those clothes coated in whatever had been bothering you. “Among the several reasons Canada wanted to break from them. Nobles are best kept away while we govern ourselves.”
“It’s a wonder they like us.”
Again he chuckled and replied after a kiss he left on your knee, “We have no power and who couldn’t love you? We were anonymous till you and with you there gladly they will give you some well earned adoration. We won’t take over the country we are merely average people with a wonderful family they aspire to have a sliver of our heaven. Two houses or not even while we’re away from Canada we let our neighbors on our land to hunt and fish and gather wood for their fires when their woods need a rest. There’s a difference, even here we do what we can for our neighbors.” He added with a smirk from you mirroring his own, “Except for the few who are found undeserving.”
When his hands rose to your thigh on the leg he’d propped up on his thigh, “I love you, you know.” Again his eyes met yours with smile that crept wider to guide his hands higher up your thigh then worked up your other leg from that foot. “Thank you, for the massage and lotion.”
Sweetly he hummed back to you after another kiss to your knee, “Every day I plan on taking care of you and when they are born our babies too. I plan to fully cherish each day and its mysteries I have at your side.”
“Ah,” you said with a smirk at him, “Now I see it, you may have to scrap those ideas of a headstone with my name on it. I refuse to die.” Playfully he gave you a glance, “You’re stuck with me, forever. So I’ll just have to enjoy these till you grow tired of them.”
Onto your knee once he lowered the foot from his thigh his hand settled to open your legs more. Both hands then gripped your hips and in a gentle tug you were on his lap for a grin spreading settle of you against his chest with noses touching. Around the back of his neck your arms draped at his hum of, “I will never grow tired of adoring every inch of you.” Just one kiss deepened and bled to two that eventually had him lift you in the walk to lay you out across the bed for a layer stripping tender slow tangling of limbs in the new adjusted intimate moments you would share. Positions didn’t feel the same with depths, speeds and angles altered to fit the changes in your body and comfort. An amorous break that ended with ample stolen kisses peppered across every inch of you while over your back, arms, chest and belly the massage and lotioning was resumed and followed by another tangle of limbs to simply cuddle and kiss through the rest of the night.
.
Focused on classes the barrage of questions of your health were ignored in the start of a hell of a week including the naming of the employee who broke the rules of the lab who was publicly fired. While he made the circles speaking to whoever would listen to milk the story as much as possible confirming his beliefs on your prognosis. By the end of the second week however Eddie smirked as across the headlines of the Daily Bugle that rippled through all the other papers was a full explosive reveal of the gambling debts that to build a pool of funds doubt had been cast on the man who had latched onto the first big name that fell across his lap to reel in some big figures.
Thursday again, English Composition opened the day to typed prompts while you tried to keep your mind off the subtle slope to your belly and the widening of your waist where it normally tapered inwards. Not just forward but out sideways your body had begun to change to suit the trio you were carrying. By use of your new camera now tasked with progress shots a picture of your reflection was captured from the side and head on to just keep track with a third that James came to cuddle up behind you in a loving embrace and kiss to your cheek between murmurs to lure you to bed to get ample rest for the class where you now found yourself. Trig and Calculus came next with just subtle glances stolen your way to each subtle change of posture or shift in your seat for comfort on the stiff wooden things you were trapped in for the rest of the year.
Lunch was a welcome break with Portia excited beyond compare to hear of the trip and to steal a moment on the way out on how you were doing. Astronomy was a nice break with comfier chairs that was canceled out by the still benches in Sociology that made the usual tiered desk seats in your Rhetoric class seem like a comfortable relief until back in the classroom for the paper back on the Barnard Campus you were free to claim your usual cushioned swivel desk chair beside Portia. Just like you didn’t miss a day at all right into the mix you settled ready to present more sketch drafts to go with each story presented.
Ignorance seemed to be truly a form of bliss for what the papers were up to as you focused on class and merely keeping healthy. Visits from Herc were weekly with ample scans as you watched your figure shift drastically. New bras were a must while sideways you felt you’d doubled and now before a warm sweater was added with your tank top clearly the bump had doubled as well. It was all normal, that was what you kept being told while it seemed daily from your neck down every inch seemed to change until in the mirror a puff of your cheeks was added to the picture reel to check again when you were not so in the middle of this process to have a clear view of how much or little your body had changed. While possibly a bit hard on yourself at first the pictures changed simply in the claim of the camera by James for what would grow to be a box of film rolls of candid shots that laced with adoring comments warmed you up greatly to the notion that every inch and pound added meant healthier babies to come.
This winter would have been the hardest to date to adjust to. Even barely three months in and after class naps were a must and even Teddy pouted and would hold out on his naps to join you in the sitting or living room on the couch you would choose to share them with you. As he realized playtime would change the boy adjusted to keep his special time together with his bunny however he could. Erik especially you thought would be faced with a different skew to his usual holiday break. As the games that you normally held based on mastering your shared abilities had to be on hold for your part while you doubted the effects of how they could affect the rest of your body and especially risk the babies even against Herc and Elliot’s insistences that even levitating would be safe as your body would protect the babies. But they relented to the understandable timid nature of a first time mother.
.
Final exams of the semester did come. And packed up again through the cold night you drove for the start of the long drive home that in a pause for food in Alberta you took notice of the loss of the guys on your way back from the bathroom who by the time you had finished your plate returned to the table with wide grins. “Where’d you run off to?” you asked your husband who nestled in closer to your side.
Still smiling James answered, “Just a surprise for you to help make up for changes this holiday and summer.”
“Dawn and Jeanie didn’t get gifts when they were pregnant like this.”
Eddie, “Oh yes they did.”
Dawn said, “Even we agreed you should get a gift. We had one a piece while you’ll have a much harder time especially when it starts to get hotter.”
Norma, “Plus you deserve a big gift from all of us, you work so hard you have earned some relaxing on the couch.”
“You’re all insane.” You said to their creeping smiles as you ate another of the fries left in front of you to soon finish off the plate so you could handle the final two hour drive to the house where they would reveal just what they had chosen for you.

“Admiral 30A model, top of the line they had to offer.” Victor said with a pat of his hand on the television set James and Eddie were aligning in the living room to be plugged in right in view of your favored nestling spot.
“You didn’t need-,”
James and Eddie both said, “Oh yes we did.” Then stood with hands that fixed their vests again to their waists all that grinned to the cross of your arms.
James said, “You just settle in, Vic lit the fire and we’ll just relax till bedtime so you’ll be up for Erik and Edie’s arrival in the morning.”
Eddie turned his head and said, “Let’s see what could be on, settle in.” You sighed and did as he asked, sat down on the couch where you took off your shoes that James took in a move of the footrest he brought over. Norma with a smile had come back with popcorn she had made once Petal was tucked in the playpen to sleep in the spreading warmth of the fire beside Teddy and Marigold. Dawn once changed came mid shiver to join the warm group to cuddle up in the usual spot where Eddie would join her once his dial turning was through and a show was chosen.

Brother Dearest Pt 44
Tumblr media
Halfway muffled static of the radio opened your eyes, a sudden clench of your bladder found you easing out of the bed to head to the toilet. Half asleep James rolled onto his back in a slumbering shift to meet the usual pattern that when you would leave bed upon returning you’d spread across his chest or would lay down beside him with a hold on his arm as a sign to roll back and cuddle with you again. After you had slipped out of the bathroom to the living room you walked on your toes and shut off the radio and came back again to a smirk inducing sight of James half in shadows and light both dancing over his half exposed body. Beside the fireplace a new log hovered to the fire while you went in your bag and brought out your new camera you’d gotten from Kodak. To the side of the bed you crept closer and began to hover off the floor to line up the right shot.
The click of the camera opened his eyes to a chuckle worthy sight of your body lowering to the bed had him sit up and bring you into his chest to hold you at his side. Out of his palm you hovered the camera so the light he was fighting to keep you from being cast entirely in shadow behind him that had you giggle to each of his frustrated grumbles. Against his chest you cuddled and let the camera down after the second picture of a kiss to your nightstand. The lip lock continued in the stroke of your fingers along his cheek to his hair to bring him over you. Firm and steady his hands smoothed over your sides and legs and up again in the abrupt move of his lips to your neck. Tender and passionate once a sleeve was brought from the nightstand the first of many enamored hours spent in one another’s arms. Things hadn’t truly changed yet the legal shift had tilted the angle of affection shown back to kisses and cuddles, more than the usual for a lack of wishes to be apart physically after these years of legal separation.
A warm morning had you both in trousers and boots with fishing poles in hand to go and catch your lunch and dinner. From side to side you ended up in a giggling spot across his lap lost to more kisses in the wait for a tug on the line. A furry body however that plopped on your lap had your smile split open for the bear cub you rubbed the belly and head on soon joined by another cub followed by their mother that James patted the side of on her way to catch her own fish further down the stream. Not far beyond that two grunts from her and the pair scrambled from your arms and in a trot hurried to catch up to her for their lesson in fishing. Two fish caught, cleaned and in the newspaper inside the net were carried, hand in hand you strolled back to the cabin lost to giggles and smiling chatter through the trees and tall grass.
Just past a tree the sudden snout in front of your face silenced you both and in a tilt of your head your eyes locked on those of the bull moose that looked you over. “Hello,” you said with a hand that lifted in his nose lowering to the last half of your apple you had been snacking on, “You want my apple?” Greedily the moose off your palm ate the apple and then grunted in thanks and turned to continue on its stroll to answer a distant call of its child.
With a palm dribbled in moose spit you smiled up at your husband who shook his head and took the first step to your hand swiped down the side of your thigh, “I just fed a big bad moose from the palm of my hand,” you teased to James who chuckled at the proud smile wide across your face.
“Yes you did my impossible Darling.”
Fish cooked and veggies diced and cooked the plates were filled and again on one chair the meal was shared and ended with a nip at your lip in a tug on his hand to bring him to the living room for some more dances to the radio you switched on. Right away once you’d turned his chest pressed to yours, his forehead as well in the loop of his arms around your back from a giggle inducing stroke of his hands down the arms he circled around the back of his neck. Stray giggles from you were answered by chuckles from him and in silence an awkward zig zag of a dance was to be had regardless of the tempo of the music.
Every sunset followed with a stretch out underneath the stars in the grass on a blanket for shared dreams of the future that those stars would watch you come across in the incoming years. Rain that came on the third day granted you a fire lit fourth day to add to your honeymoon both in bed and cuddled up on the couch warmed by the fire. Lost in a sea of blissful moments. Both documented by pictures that filled the roll of film and in the memory of the man still harboring a deep rooted fear of that first day a single silver hair would suddenly appear in your unruly pitch black curls or a daunting wrinkle that would sound the countdown to the day he would lose you.
Drizzle ignored, a feeling to get back again had the car loaded up and cabin tidied to like new. Loud shrieks and screeches of children had you wide eyed slipping out of the car only to laugh at the group of children in giggling sprints to flop and slide across the wet grass down the small hills around the house that had their mothers huff in how much mud was growing to cover the herd. Your telling giggle had them turn and greet you with warm hugs and they led you inside to some warming tea to Victor’s hurried trot to help bring the bags inside. Special care was taken in the transfer of the gown and suit into a designated trunk back in their boxes lined with mothballs to keep them safe from time and insects with hats on full display with boots and heels in the closet for daily reminders. Upstairs to the table they went after their hushed conversation on a respectful sharing of the honeymoon and what you had missed.
Once there however Victor smiled widely to hear your sharing on the meeting of the elusive and highly feared moose that you stood on a chair to share how large the creature was. James’ nod to Victor had him chuckle and Dawn’s mouth open to hear more knowing you’d have to share the tale again when you saw David again. The Brocks had lingered along with Father Thomas who had remained until your return, thankful for the peaceful oasis this property had clearly been for you and himself he now knew what you had to leave behind each time you went to Brooklyn to study.
Morning, once they had loaded up Elliot gave you a kind smile and in his own cloud of glittering mist strolled his way back to his home in New York, you rode with James to the bank. The stop went fairly smooth and was the first of the few tasks that came with the change of your name. A sent off set of forms had new copies of your passports and social security card to have your new name on it as well as the driver’s license you had for Canada that the brothers encouraged you to get.
.
“Now, if we get to a picture you don’t want me to see,” Victor chuckled in your playful nudge into his side in the dark room for your shared bonding time in the developing process. “I’m being serious, just cough and I’ll turn around.”
“We didn’t take anything naked.” You giggled out and while James and Eddie read through the letter from the Pope they were translating from Italian using the textbook Dawn had been borrowing to pick up the language with tutoring from you.
“I was talking about one of those longing loving stare pictures that might be too much for my old weather worn heart,” he chuckled again at your next bump as he readied the roll of film inside the canister.
“Oh you are not nearly as fragile as you try to put out there Kitty.” He grinned and turned his focus to the chemicals to add to the canister while you readied the other stations later down the process.
Anyone would have been welcome but like the others you had your own hobbies and bonding time for each of them those tasks were often respected so that the group could each get their own times together and not be crowded all the time. Even the puppies adored the makeshift schedules so they could claim time with each of the adults and to peer over the baby and to chase Teddy in his time in the yard between naps curled up around Norma in her near daily lounges on the couch. One by one the pictures showed a timeline of the time alone and it wasn’t till after that he stood with you to admire the lot of them with a time to focus on the picture you took hovering over James and the two over the both of you together taken right after. “Now these are stunning.”
“They’re mostly dark. This one James is missing a chunk of his face.”
Victor chuckled and said, “All the same it’s stunning.” The one without the kiss he said, “And this one even just the flickers off your curls out of the shadows gives the hint you don’t know how much hair you have, like one of those myths where forests or grasslands are the hairs of ancient goddesses and forest spirits, or even the waves in the ocean. Plus you make a unique choice on pictures and angles.” He led you to one of you both cuddled up, with him shirtless and you in his shirt cooking on the stove, him stirring and you adding more ingredients with a nip at your lip and curls in a bun on top of your head partially blocking his smile covered face, “And this one is priceless.”
That had you giggle and then explain the picture of a random picture of a hand offering a harvest mouse on its first stroll atop a tall bending flower a small slice of apple. Open mouthed its outstretched fingers readied to accept the feast that in the next picture on a near noon picnic was seen seated on your leg beside three more eating the offered treats from you. Just barely they had been noticed in the folds of his shirt pooled in your lap if not for the tiny shadows they cast across your bent thigh. “I suppose we can use one of the photo books for the trip that we have downstairs.”
He smiled and said, “We’re making a couple more copies of at least a few of these. I know Jimmy’s gonna want this one to carry with him at least.” He said and led you on the way to make the spare copies in both smaller sizes and the same to be put in frames for both homes.
“Pope Pius XII wishes us a bountiful union.” James said and smiled at the notice of the pictures. He eased back his chair to let you cuddle in showing off the pictures you would take up to Norma in her waking up from a much needed nap. The time between Teddy cherished his turn with his favored aunt to give Dawn a break for her own nap while Eddie was off at the paper in town.
While peaceful the blend into your old routines came easily with James picking up his shift at the mill. Quite contrary to your place at home with Norma who adored the art classes you had come up with to keep her occupied and to help you sketch up some ideas for the first new edition of the Captain America comic that only landed you face down groaning into a pillow on the floor. All you had to work on was the ground level in the issues made so far with nothing but Nazi fights and war related topics. But to get him out of the war when Steve never really got out was hard to imagine a possible way to achieve that.
To ignore the funk that left you in your attentions moved back to more ideas for the wedding edition’s follow up where you would all be rescuing the King and President Truman from those who had foiled the day that would end with a submarine wrapped trading of vows on the trip back home after the rescue had been made. Near the bottom of the ocean seemed to be an interesting twist on real life and couldn’t have seemed to have been more of a shock to the readers who no doubt would flip upon its release. Though the Captain on the Submarine who performed the ceremony would become rather useful in later plots yet to come.
.
From the yearly troop meeting in June to the 22nd birthday of yours that two days later James’ on the 6th followed were rather peaceful times much needed to deflate and ready for the plans that would be finalized in a few days. The 9th however came with excitement bubbling news that had bowled over the stories in the papers and on the radio that mentioned the release of your book. Princess Elizabeth was now officially engaged and it seemed that each article seemed to give credit where the King had intended to be placed originally, your recent wedding. Along with the papers however came an official set of invitations for your family for the wedding that as she had hoped would be taking place in November.
The 14th however came about and asleep with your head on James’ lap you rode on the long drive to Alberta to the big book premier. The hand on your side to keep you from sliding off the bench seat had your eyes crack open in a brain settling grumble while his eyes settled on the confused Publisher and Editor who had been outside ready to greet you. Upon getting close enough however when James had parked in the spot saved they saw you lift up with blanket on your shoulder and the pillow propped against your husband’s leg. Widely their smiles spread to your fingers that ruffled through your curls that fell into a more casual poof that you eased the effect of by twisting the side back. And with the two pins in the ash tray were held back from your face that you settled with help of the mirror clipped to the visor in the open of the door by your Publisher.
Onto your feet you slid out with a smile settling your shirt around your thighs saying, “Morning Fellas.”
The Editor asked, “Long drive?”
James over the hood stated, “Couple hours, but sister in law had a rough night.”
They looked to you and you clarified, “She’s due soon.”
“Oh,” they both said and the Producer said, “You seem rather intact.”
“Thank you,” you said in a weak chuckle closing the door to the car in James’ stroll around the car. “Just continued my sleep into the car.”
James asked in a glance around at the few cars in the parking lot off to the side of the strip mall, on the end of which was the path to the community college auditorium that you would be having a Q &A at later today after a lunch break at noon. “Decent turnout? Seems kind of, quiet.”
A chortle was his only answer that lured you to fold your hand in James’ while the Publisher shared what the other events would be shaped like now with changes in venue for each of the questions and press meets where you would be interviewed. Just a moment your eyes narrowed in confusion for the need to find larger places for the question section, which wouldn’t have taken long enough compared to the signing to have the questions be moved. Sound systems came possibly up as a reason in your head along with a possible try to have the press off to the side to not have to switch them out later. Though around the corner of the front of the shops your foot froze in place at the line of people that wove all through the parking lot into the book store with a crew of men through the side of the store unloading more boxes loaded with copies of your book.
“Oh drawbridge,” you muttered in Irish.
The Editor chuckled and said, “Fairly decent turnout Mr Howlett.”
The Producer said to the first gasp and point your way, “Let’s get you inside.” He said leading the way towards the front of the line outside with a mother and daughter who waved to you with the brother beside them snapping a picture of you on the way that at his height had you press a hand to your skirt. The black fabric with yellow flowers of the skirt was layered in thinner layers than the button down cap sleeved pale yellow blouse secured with a solid black belt with a bow to cover the buckle that secured it in place. Through the door opened for you the crowds didn’t get any smaller. And with hold of your cardigan James kept behind you with hold of your hand as through the designated path out the apparent hundreds of people in line browsing the shelves near to their assigned slot all turned with smiles and waves excited to have a sign the line would be moving soon.
A desk in the back of the maps section in the back corner with a few arm chairs for the guys and a clear shot to the back where the mountain of books were being unloaded. Right away you smiled at the woman in the front of the line who said, “Hi Mrs Bunny.”
“Hello,” you said following the subtle pat on your arm to guide you to the table at the ripple of the whisper down the line that you had arrived. Across the mahogany beauty a couple copies of your book were sat upright with one laid flat in front of the wheeled wingback chair that was heavily cushioned. Sweetly on your cheek James pressed a kiss and helped you into the chair, “Settle in Darling.”
Into his chair he settled off to your side sneaking a copy of the book he smirked in admiring each picture inside of it, including the proud moniker of your chosen maiden name on the cover. A brief speech from the Producer to those within earshot came in the arrival of a group of hired aids in matching shirts. Each who handed out copies to those in line limited one per group as warned by the posters outside where a few crafty customers were to pretend they didn’t know one another to get a spare copy or two. From the first woman through the first twenty people in the marked area closest to you that were given copies of the books to prevent theft to walk the guarded exit path past the registers, that with the signage of the price of the books was expedited by exact cash or as close to it in hand for a brief stop for their stroll to their cars to wait or head out to the rest of the book fair through the community college campus to occupy them until the Q&A at noon, you heard ample compliments on the appearance of the book and a photo or two they had taken notice of in their wait.
“Battle Bunny!” your smile spread at the first little boy in line who as his mother, who was third in line, handed you her book settled his comic on the table that on his toes he slid as far as his little arm could reach. “I have all your books!”
“Thank you. Did you want me to sign it?” He nodded excitedly and you giggled opening the book to the final page where you knew it would have enough room for a signature that upon the slide of it back again he hurried around the table to James who smiled accepting one of your spare pens to open the comic book to sign his own name and chat with the boy a few moments while you opened your photo book the mother spelled her name out for you.
“B-e-l-l-a-d-o-n-n-a.”
“Oh that’s so pretty. Toxic but beautiful. One of my favorite poems absolutely swoons over the intricacies of a woman who bewitches and swindles by using belladonna.”
Your grin almost flinched and her smile spread, “No one else knows that poem. My mother loved that poem used to read it to me nonstop along with the book it was published in.” A soft proud giggle left her in her reach for her son’s hand to guide him to pay for the book and she said, “I can’t wait to see you again at noon.”
“Bye,” you said to the boy who continued to finish his sentence to James who smiled and nodded giving a wave to answer the boy’s in his trot away already sharing more about the latest edition of his comic book to his mother.
A little girl next having heard of the signed comic book began a new addition to your signing that each child who had asked to come along that had hold of their own comics to meet two of their heroes on an allowed trip their parents had wanted to go on themselves and were glad to have agreement from their children. Streamlined with a few stolen pictures by those who brought cameras, helped by your Editor, got shots with you and James to have printed out later.
Six in the morning was when you had arrived, and on the cusp of one, after a couple bathroom breaks and a delivery of tea for you and James. That helped to coast you along to the final thirty people in line who excitedly all got copies of their books that you gladly signed along with the comics of the children who had patiently waited hours to meet you and had made a discussion of sorts on the comics they brought up to you. The noon slot for questions now traded with another author who wished to leave earlier was traded for one at three in a fortunate string of chance. Greatly pushing back your lunch to fit all those in line to their own chance to get a signature from you. Softly you exhaled in your seat against the wall in the curved two seater booth in the diner you had strolled to for the brief break you had to recover from hours of signing. Atop your lap James’ hands massaged the cramps from your hand to your mutter of, “I didn’t think there would be that many people. And there are still all those books left over.”
“The truck is going to follow us around to the other stops you know.”
“Really?”
He nodded and said, “Producer said he’s even got a few boxes they’ll be giving us to have you sign on the flights between stops to ship to England for the pre ordered signed copies they’ve had raffles for.” His eyes scanned over your face, “You did fantastically.”
“My face is sore.” That had him chuckle again to the murmured statement accented with a pout that slipped back in the arrival of a smile recipient of a waitress who ended up with a good tip that she smiled in saying after her shift was going towards her own copy of your book the other girls had already saved up for their own. With hold of your hand again out he led you to the sides of the waiting duo that had left to ensure the stage was set up properly for you and was ready to go with the seats full of people from the signing along with several crowded in the back aisles and along the walls who slipped in from the book fair.
Again you had smiled and took your seat behind the table with ankles crossed and barely visible beneath the banner hung on the front of said table, a microphone on the table in front of you that once turned on caught the tail end of a breathy giggle from you. In a line people got up to ask their questions that thankfully for you were able to answer all of them except for giving a vague answer as to the topic of your next book that people already were aching to have more even after just having bought the book hours prior.
The interviews after took that answer down for their articles and then focused on simple questions on a few of the more puzzling images, though most were wondering how you had pulled off the hovering item images. With a smirk however you answered with the same title that others had labeled your magnetic mastery to that papers had printed before from the speeches given at the dinner you had been invited to that Stark had repeated in several of his interviews since when others brought you up. Refrigerator Magnet Science.
.
Four more signings had you on a private plane with James through the rest of the month to the same rotating locations of the book fair with other authors on their own train or car based travels while you were required at home. That meant earlier drives to get to the airstrip in Alberta to be on time for the early flights for nearly full days away, the final one however had Victor off with you after Norma had spent the night up with cramps and insomnia that had tipped him on edge. James knew the signs and swapped places with his big brother to give him a try to relax with his baby sister to keep his mind off of Norma, who was more than a bit irritated at his lingering stares that disturbed her try to get some line work in from a book on some classic plays to keep her occupied.
“He sent me out of the house.” He growled to himself again.
“Better him than Jeanie.” That had his head turn from his stare out of the window of the pill box plane that you were trying to not focus on causing it to drop out of the sky by your nerves for another packed event surrounded by strangers and press. All that only had you worried about what to possibly photograph the following year to make a second book that could interest people at all. One book was enough to draw some eyes your way and now those eyes had your heart race at the thought of being known as a photographer even part time. It was Steve’s camera and somehow it felt as f you had stolen a piece of him and what he might have done had he not died. Had he not taken that plane and plowed it into the Artic. Firm around your hand Victor’s folded to the confused commentary between the pilots at the flickering dials that steadied in the snap of your silver rimmed eyes to him again post distant gaze out the window. The lining receding in the contact.
The hold on your hand however revealed the tremble he knew well from you, not outwardly but an odd internal tremble of your nerves just like the first bubbles in a boiling pot of water beginning to show. He knew that feeling, he’d felt that feeling exactly the same since learning Norma was pregnant. You knew his pain, and he had his reasons to be terrified that was clear but your pain was an iceberg they all knew was there but not entirely what it contained or was aimed at. That drew his focus, what that pain was, where your mind wandered, how he could help, and if necessary who he had to kill.
“What is it?” He asked lowly.
Your head tilted in a shake of it and you replied in a sigh, “Weird dream.” His brow arched up and you sighed saying, “Jeanie was on the table and we were all eating around her. And her stomach just explodes,” his lips parted, “And her stomach was full of cake.” Rather helplessly he gave a deep throaty chuckle to the image that had you shake your head again with an embarrassed grin. “Chocolate with cherry icing between the layers.”
“And the baby?” He cracked out in a try not to laugh and startle the pilots.
“It’s so weird, Teddy was a moose and you were petting a lamb that was draped around your shoulders. And you talked to it like it was the baby, and Venom was on the ceiling nailing these weird stocking things from Dawn and my closets all over the place and James is just rolling across the floor back and forth between these obnoxiously fake sneezes.”
“Wow,” he murmured, “Anything else?”
“I can’t talk and I have no teeth.”
His finger extended at you, “No teeth means money. I know that, money is coming in. I got nothing on the rest of it, especially the cake belly part. Did you tell Jimmy about this? That why he was laughing this morning?”
“Ya. Guess he figured he could have a break from the urge to laugh at me for dreaming it. And you might need a laugh.”
His hand remained fixed on yours for the rest of the longest flight yet and he said to you lowly, “I did need a laugh. And a break. I’ve been hovering, and staring.”
“You have. Baby is healthy, just now moving south.”
“I know, she just has that endo illness. She lost a baby with her ex. She was just a couple months in though.”
“She mentioned that a few times. But she’s healthy now, baby seems strong by what I can tell.”
“Don’t think I don’t know you have something to do with that.” He said and your brow ticked up at his low murmur, “Dawn’s family, she had reason to be worried about carrying. Whole town knew her mom’s struggles carrying to term. You and Squishy helped her with getting stronger if she was going to have struggles.”
“You are happy together?” You asked softly and his grin eased out.
“We are, maybe me more than her, got her hooked to me legally by the baby. She’s young, wants a family but also wants her dream on the big screen. We’ll find our way.” His eyes scanned over your face, “Are you happy? Not with Jimmy.”
“I don’t know about the books, or the Kodak ad offers. It seems, I picked up a pencil because when I did draw Steve would correct me, with what he learned in his way for an art degree. How I’d get him to talk to me.”
“None of that is his, even the camera. I know it hurts.”
“It doesn’t.” You said and his lips parted to the scan of his eyes over your face, “It’s hollow. Just a gap. His words hurt, the rest is like a cold slap of air that just washes over me. No pain, it used to hurt, that scares me.”
“Now, that I get. Fully, no doubt about that. I was lost. Jimmy and me, both, every time we lost everyone. We were each other’s anchor. You will be so happy,”
Barely above a whisper mentally you asked him, “What if one of my babies grows to look like Steve?”
Victor sighed and looked to your joined hands his other hand moved to cradle, “Well, we most certainly aren’t going to let them be like him. Your sons are going to grow up cherishing their mother, sisters, aunts and cousins. That’s how you move on, Mr Howlett, the mighty Baron, he was despicable. His son, nearly killed me more than once, beat me, belittled me and our father, drove him to the edge to where he got himself killed and scared Jimmy so bad to when we had to run away. You grow, you be better, your babies do better, the evil dies. We are going to show your babies so much love that what their uncle did will never cross their minds to inflict on another.”
You nodded and said softly, “I don’t think I ever said I’m sorry, for what you had to face alone. If we were alive before, and came back.”
“We hurt when we’re apart. The pain was a reminder for the person we were missing that we never understood we were missing all that time. You don’t owe us an apology. You didn’t do that. You being apart from us doesn’t make you responsible for our pain, no one is exempt from suffering, not even the girl who grew up to save the world.”
“I didn’t, I-,”
“You saved the world. Every no against injustice and cruelty is a heroic thing, you saved Teddy’s world, Erik and Edie’s, Dawn’s, Marigold’s, Norma’s, mine and Jimmy’s. My baby’s. We are all going to be whole again, with our own army. One big happy unhinged family.” Softly you chuckled and he smirked at the hint of a shift in the tremble that had began to diminish slowly.
Together, that was how you were going to get through the day. And upon reaching the packed book store he saw just what had put you on edge upon first sight of the lengthy lines. By the time you were back on the plane he could sense your sleep coming on that would have him carrying you inside after the long drive back he’d gladly accept the silence to think while you slept off this behemoth of a day.
.
The adorable bob of your head in a try to stay awake had Victor grin while saying, “You can sleep you know.” Days, weeks even you had gone without so much as a blink of sleep in the war and now adorably now in peacetime that was history at the nightly pattern James had ensured you were put back on to return you to a healthy healed state. That was always the goal, to get you safe and get you comfortable and pain and stress free.
“I can wait. Both you and James always have to drive in the quiet when I fall asleep and you’ve spent all day waiting on the sidelines-.”
That had him chuckle and he said, “I loved interacting with those kids that showed up. It’s fantastic seeing all those people there for you. Nothing about today was put upon me. And you are tired so you can sleep.”
“What if you fall asleep?”
He chuckled again, “I am not tired, you were the main focus today, get a nap so you can share with Jimmy when we get home.” You sighed and he said, “I know you are phenomenal against anyone who comes at you. But even someone who can tear tanks apart need to sleep when they can’t keep their heads up. We’ve all been on edge lately, get some rest.” You sighed and he simply smirked and turned the radio station to one of the classic story channels that had you roll your eyes and accept the patted pillow he laid against his thigh to lay down and rest your head on.
Muttering lowly, “Just downright devious methods. Drone me to sleep with this guy.”
With a chuckle he helped to fix the blanket left folded on the seat over your shoulder after you curled up on the empty stretch of the bench seat, “Just let me have my tiny victories.”
In a sigh you replied in the close of your eyes, “Those kids did love you today.”
Lowly he chuckled and hummed back, “Yes they did.” Mentally replaying each child whose eyes lit up in having one of their heroes from the page there in real life to sign Kitty on the comic books. One of the rarest of the group they could have encountered in public. Arguably the quietest of the group on the page and in public but clearly with a steady fan base that had him guessing just maybe he might on the page pick up the lead for an edition, even if it’s just him at home with Teddy and Marigold while the others are off saving the world or working.
Yet the thought of the introduction of Norma to the comic books under her stage name complete with floral powers enhanced. His mind wandered to her again and the incoming baby he couldn’t wait to have in his arms and never let go of between bits when Norma would have hold of her or even the turns you and James would take to enforce his times to sleep. He had to let go of this deep seeded fear of losing another child and wife. Times now were safer, still troubling, but safer. Norma was strong and she could breeze through a birth and become a graceful glorious mother that she had dreamed of becoming and until him had failed to get this far. He didn’t know what the future would hold but that image of Teddy pinking up in your arms kept repeating over and over as a deep rooted reminder his babies and Norma would be safe and healthy. It may be a bit more pressure than you needed at the moment as the backbone healer they all hoped to not require services from at the most dire moments.
But his worries always looped around to what Jimmy had shared on your concerns about your own birth that truly troubled him. You had been shot several times and healed rather easily but birth was different and at just the thought of it if that had you concerned to the point where you guessed cutting the child out of you had crossed your mind they had some work to do to get you more comfortable before babies would be an option.
Twenty one wasn’t very old and Norma wasn’t far behind you in age but between the both of you in terms of family building Norma was years ahead of you in that sense after having been married before and been ready for motherhood the earlier times she had been told she was expecting. While she regrettably lost those now she had at least the groundwork for the act of birthing a baby. Mothering, you had that down, for those not knowing the family dynamic to some Teddy could be taken as your own for how much you loved and cared for him absolutely. Marigold wasn’t far behind when Dawn had given you time to hold her as she was a tad fussy compared to how peaceful her brother had been and picky on who held her and when. They just had work to do to build you some confidence in what would be coming up however far off or soon in your future. He loved you like crazy and hated to see any hint of fear in you at all.

Brother Dearest Pt 47
Tumblr media
“I love you,” again the words were murmured into your hair by your husband who kept you close to his side after a round of gifts from the guests and a dinner with the beyond excited household. A sigh was his response and his smile doubled in the new fact that the exhaustion that had overtaken the daily schedules was to fuel the growth of the astonishing three babies you had both brought to life.
Atop his chest where he had agreed to have pictures of babies of yours taken his hand enveloped yours ignoring the gentle tug of his chest hair in the curl of those fingers looped in between his. “No one’s going to hurt you or dare to touch our babies.” He just about growled in the return of the stories of the Dionne Quints who had been stolen from their family and made an attraction to the public. He couldn’t think of any triplets and knew that even with one baby your faces would be in the papers. Tightly he clenched his eyes shut to focus on simply what your babies could grow to be and to wake up on time to get you ready for breakfast which would include another of those pears the family would ensure you would not miss.
Downstairs however Victor sat up in the kitchen pacing with his Petal against his chest after her being woken and in his return from siren chasing for a lead Eddie came back to find Dawn who held Marigold with mug in her other hand to hand over to him after she finished her tea. Victor again crossed the room and couldn’t help but chuckle in meeting up with the couple, they both couldn’t help but smile knowing just what he was thinking, a joke that had been brought up earlier at supper. Eddie in his step away said, “James will be down here next year with a pram to pace his babies so Bunny can sleep.”
Victor chuckled again on his way to the wall where he turned and came back again to Dawn’s sway on her feet to calm Marigold in her next drowsy grumble on her way to sleep again. Victor responded, “Knew she’d find a way to show us up.” He chuckled again as Dawn grinned to herself.
She said, “I just hope we head back home for the babies. These stairs are difficult early on. Can’t imagine how hard three babies would be all the way up and down daily.”
Eddie said, “It’ll be summer before we know it and Bunny could always ask to test out early for next semester or see if she can do her courses by correspondence.”
Victor, “We’ll make sure she takes time off. And they will be easier to lock into a schedule back home.”
Dawn asked, “I wonder how she’s going to tell Ambrose about the change of Doctors.”
Eddie chuckled, “Oh she won’t care she’ll just tag along with Bunny to her appointments too, and maybe she can get a peak at her own munchkin. Just wants her to have a cozy first pregnancy. They didn’t get to give her a normal teenage experience like they had. Twelve to fifteen then we were gone five years and came back practically engaged. Never even got to help her prep for dates and all that till we got back here so her and Gina want to make up for lost time.” After finishing his tea he set the mug down and took hold of his baby girl he kissed on the temple and folded her against his chest.
Dawn took the mug and said, “I just hope they don’t spread it around that Jaqi might get a negative result,” on her way to the kitchen.
Eddie, “The redheaded Nurse, long as she wasn’t there it shouldn’t be that bad.”
Victor now stopped as Petal was asleep again to say, “Well if word has spread she’s been given a no they may just give it a rest and help to give a bit of breathing room for her few months till she starts to show.”
Eddie, “Good thing though the wedding is next week and that dress won’t be too small.”
.
Polka dotted and deep blue the long sleeved blouse you pulled on over a thick black skirt you turned your torso in James’ focus on securing your heels to grab the cardigan that had become a staple to wear. “Nice and secure,” he said settled now on his knees with hands eased around your hips to press his lips against your belly where he murmured in a hug of the legs against his chest, “Try not to trouble Mommy now. She has classes to get through and we all want Mommy to get her dream degree, now don’t we angels?” He kissed your belly then lifted up and lovingly claimed the cardigan he helped to ease around you in a ploy to steal more cuddles and a lingering kiss. “Let’s feed you, my Darling Love.”
“You are happy?” His head tilted slightly a moment worried how that might have been imagined until you said, “We didn’t wait six years,” weakly he chuckled and rolled his eyes to your saying, “Couldn’t even make it a year apparently, now three babies thrown at you.”
Wordlessly he melted around your body in a passionate kiss with arms that clutched you into his chest. Side to side his nose stroked yours in the break of lips, “I love you, give it a few months and it’s nearly six years since we met. More than long enough. And Darling, you can throw as many babies at me as you like I will love them all and tear anyone who dares to hurt you or them to pieces then feed them to squishy. So if anyone today bothers you let me know.”
“I will, but it’s more likely it will be people in England not Columbia who will be bothering me, especially if they are like that Prince.” He chuckled and shifted back to guide you down to eat where he cut up the pear that the tree allowed him to take that you ate as you cuddled with Teddy before you were off for the day to calm the confused boy who knew that something was changed.
All the same James escorted you back to school and reluctantly left again to take charge of Teddy and host the sea of Brocks who had come in groups to help and get the fridge and pantry set up for a family dinner for you to celebrate. James to silence the worries managed to get with Ambrose who even in the change of locations to travel to for appointments was beyond thrilled to know that there was a Doctor who specialized with people like you and could keep your babies safe. Dr Roan was highly trusted but in your case was clearly in over his head and a specialist was called for. At least now they knew no matter what the results from the clinic said you were safely under the charge of people who had been able to lift your health up instantly after such a long few months since being back at school.
English went well but it seemed something again had rippled through the school. It wasn’t until you got to the oddly smoke free Trigonometry classroom where the Professor crossed your path with the day’s paper folded in your view revealing the title on the third page that had you roll your eyes on the way to your seat from another story about the Brocks being spotted baby prepping. The reaction had him chuckle and almost light up behind his desk until from the corner of his vision the fidget of fingers over the fold of your cardigan and pauses in how to rest your hands on your lap that had you just rest your bag on your lap to keep from fidgeting.
Something seemed to register an internal confirmation to not smoke while clearly underneath this issue was a problem that you were working through and hopefully could entrust him with after nearly a year and a half of a friendly rapport. On the usual stop to pick up extra assignments he hushedly said, “I didn’t mean to bother you with the paper.”
You shook your head, “You didn’t. Just, um,” in a check that you were nearly alone in the final students exiting you softly said, “The clinic Doctor said my exam said I wasn’t pregnant. So I have seen a specialist who’s been able to say otherwise who’ll keep an eye on me. But I can’t say anything because the Princess is getting married and I said that I wasn’t around Halloween and,” his brows popped up in amusement with a smirk spreading across his lips to your ramble. “I can’t upstage her, and we promised if we found out we were expecting that it wouldn’t be put in the papers by us and we would say in person but every week it’s baby, no baby, who knows by the time I’m showing they’ll be saying James is searching for a lawyer to dump me.”
That had him chuckle and say, “Just breathe, wedding will be soon enough then you can stick it out until winter break. If you do need time off next semester just let us know.”
You nodded and said, “Thank you. Hopefully I can make it all the way to summer, my mom had a hard time with my brother, was on bed rest about the last half.” You glanced to the door then said, “I’m gonna stop talking now to not ruin your day.”
Again he chuckled and said, “Far from ruined. All four of my kids had my wife off her feet since her fourth month, don’t know how she stayed sane with all that and still loved me after.”
“Well, you have to pick allies against the tiny forces invading your home.” That had him chuckle and nod to your stroll to the door to fill your next classes seat.
.
All eyes on you and with hair beginning to stand on end it became obvious that something was wrong again and to the clench of your fingers around the spine of your book pressed to your chest to keep from the instinctual urge to zap yourself home to avoid whatever it was. Calculus went smoothly but all you wanted was to vanish rather than face another scandal or fiasco to your day. Still you walked to the diner where in just opening the door and when everyone’s head turned to face you under your breath you muttered in Irish, “Fuck’s sake,” backwards you stepped and let the door shut in a turn, “I’ll bleach my hair and move to Norway.”
The pair of guys behind you chortled having seen the reaction to people who paused to try and goad you to come eat and that they would make everyone leave you alone until they saw Portia step out of her car and trot over to you. On her face a concerned flinch of a frown asking, “Bunny, what’s wrong someone in our seats?”
That had you sigh and say, “Everyone’s staring at me.”
To the stroke of fingers across your forehead she guided you in a turn and said, “Well I’ll go in there and toss a table if I have to you need to eat. Been less than chipper lately we have to keep your spirits up before the big trip.” The guys smirked and held the door open for you and followed after as she led you to the usual table that had three of the girls with a paper they had been seated around and reading the story obviously triggering all those stares.
“Alright, They already wrote I’m pregnant, not pregnant, what am I this time?”
Tentatively the paper was handed over and instantly your eyes began to prickle to the title, ‘No Baby For Bunny’ above the story that steadily grew worse the farther you got. It started with the fact that you had gone to a clinic for a pregnancy test that a source had confirmed that the results not only came back negative but came back so laced with various forms of metal. A second source from those results confirmed that had reached the level of poisoning would leave you infertile or at the least unable to carry any child you could conceive to any considerable length of time. All of which they credited most likely to any injuries or exposure you had faced in the war including fragments from the bullets that the article said you had been shot with. All of this somehow had led them to the fact that they were all to terminal levels and soon enough as you had been noted as under the weather lately and the fatal diagnosis.
Though that was only halfway through the first column of text and you folded the paper in half to more stares from people who watched a tear streak down your cheek. Including the waitress who shifted her weight to hear you say with a grin in the wipe of your cheek, “Since I’m apparently not pregnant and dead soon who needs a figure, I will take a grilled chicken club with cheese and extra order of fries on top of my usual club with fries please, and a vanilla shake.”
Unable to help it she smirked and wrote down the order to Portia’s hand stroking up and down your back and gave her own order that along with the other girls was a bit more for the extra comfort same as the guys who usually shared their fries with the table anyways. When the order was walked away Portia said, “I can’t believe they wrote lies like that! That can’t be legal to write something so hurtful as that! I am so furious! You just wait I’ll tell my Daddy and he’ll give them such an earful they’ll come crawling bloody, black and blue for your forgiveness!”
You shook your head, “Freedom of the Press and Speech. Eddie and the Bugle are going to have a field day with this.”
One of the other women asked, “Are you going to respond to this?”
Shaking your head you said with a smile accepting your shake from the returned waitress, “Nope. They want their death clock they can just sit around and watch me not die.”
The guys chuckled at your thanks and shift of the straw for a calming sip of the shake. Every bit of your meal was eaten and welcome fuel for the day. Beside Portia you led her back to her car as the other ladies got their things together with ample notes on a project the guys were helping them with the outline to it. Softly she said, “Bunny, you don’t have to put on a brave face for me. I know that story hurt you,” she said with a tap of her fingers on the paper you had folded between two of your books. “You have to do something about this they can’t do this.”
“Well they’ll know they’re wrong soon enough.” That had her eyes scan over you curiously before she gasped and promptly covered her mouth and leaned in to whisper, “Are you pregnant?!” Accented with a squeak at the end.
“I promised King George when the headlines started I wouldn’t announce it in the press and I can’t one up the Princess before her big day.” She squeaked again and you said, “I went to the clinic but they couldn’t get a positive but I saw a specialist who says I’m possibly having twins.”
“Oh Bunny!” She squeaked out then reigned in her grin to the approach of the other girls. “I’m still telling my Daddy, but we are having a lunch when you get back from England.” You nodded and let them get to their swim practice with a hint of a grin on the way to join your lab partners who were waiting to escort you.
Into the warm building they led the way until you paused at your Trigonometry Professor’s doorway that you leaned into to say, “I’m dying now. Boy are they gonna be pissed swallowing that crow when I won’t die.” Chuckles filled the hall and his classroom in what had grown from pity now to another running joke at the paper’s expense that would have months of doubts for anything they would print across the campus after this.
The jokes didn’t help you though and just barely the façade held through photography club until back in the cold down the walkway you strolled to James who clearly was restraining his own reaction to everything.
At the sight of the paper between your books he took hold of with a clearly invisibly bruised set of hands he growled, “I’m gonna kill them. Squishy is spitting on them at least.”
“What did you punch?”
“Me and Vic broke the spare bricks from the back yard.”
“Do your hands hurt?” You asked in another glance at the hands curled around the books.
“Little bit, they were numb until I left the subway.” He answered and moved closer asking in the flick of the switch to fathering mode to protect his loving wife and babies, “Are you hungry?”
“Doubled my lunch order and got a shake too,” his brow ticked up in a growing grin that doubled to your adding, “Yes I’m hungry.”
Sweetly he closed the distance to claim a kiss on your lips and turned with an arm that dropped to hold you close to his side, “Let’s get you home Darling and one of those pears. Eddie should be home soon.”
“If he’s not busy eating the guy who wrote the story.”
“No worse than he’d deserve. All the other stories are clearly fluff, but this, fatal. Dawn didn’t even read it and she started to cry when the White House called asking if it was true then she set Jeanie off and then Teddy had to be taken for a walk to keep from crying too while I handled that call that had Eddie off to head to buy a copy of the story and he came home and has been in his office since. Just uncalled for.”
You shrugged and said, “They’ll eat crow when I get big. Just don’t look forward to Dr Roan’s visit.”
“I have half a mind to punch him too.”
“If anything it would have to be the lab. Dr Roan would never go and tell the papers anything like that. Gina had bad gas and reflux with her first girl and he sat her down with tea and talked her through a better diet and that wasn’t serious compared to toxic metal poisoning from bullet fragments and all that trash. They take oaths to keep their patient’s secrets.”
James said, “Someone’s gonna pay.”
.
Already parked outside your stoop Dr Roan exited his car with rolled and crumbled paper in hand and a remorseful expression on his face. Before he could speak at the people watching from their windows James nodded his head, “Come on inside Doc, we can talk it out.”
At the noise of others talking upstairs and Teddy in the sitting room you led the way down to the game room in the basement for some privacy. Right up behind you James helped to keep your stool steady in the climb onto the tall seat across from the Doctor who watched James sit beside you on his own stool at the card table. Steadily Dr Roan let out a breath and unfolded his hand from the paper he set aside to begin, “I swear to you I had nothing to do with this story other than shipping off for test results. I took an oath it is absolutely reprehensible to share secrets of patients to anyone without permission. I truly wish to express that to you ad apologize for whoever has done this to your reputation and I have called their board that someone has broken the chain of custody of information.”
“So the sample really came back I’d never have a baby?”
He sighed and brought out a folded letter from his pocket he unfolded and said, “You have no sign of pregnancy hormones according to the lab. As for the metal aspect and of the pregnancy, you see for the test we inject urine from your sample into frogs, if they lay eggs then that is a sign of pregnancy hormones in the woman. The test takes roughly twelve hours only the notes say that within two the frog for your test died. They checked the frog in a dissection and found metal in its reproductive organs nearby to the injection site. Which is unheard of for a lethal amount of metal to be passed on through the urine of a seemingly healthy albeit tired woman. We can do the exam again once the investigation is through, which I assure you they will weed out the alleged source who broke the chain of anonymity. For now I would say it would be inconclusive still as for a positive.”
“I actually got a check by a specialist that our Doctor from Canada referred me to yesterday after seeing you.”
His brows inched up, “You did? And what did he say? And there was a sign by your other Doctor to see a specialist?”
James said, “Well she’s not exactly the common woman to get pregnant. Five years like the story said in the war and being shot, knowing about how her rough cycles,”
He looked at you and asked, “You have rough cycles? Painful or just overly heavy bleeding?”
“Mostly pain, just want to stay in bed everything hurts.” You said and he nodded with eyes narrowed a moment to think of what could be the diagnosis. “His test came back positive for me.”
“That’s wonderful, truly,”
You nodded and said, “Said he heard more than one heartbeat,” his lips parted and you said, “Had one of those machines, with the wand and the screen that showed three peanut sized bubbles with heartbeats.”
“Three, you are certain?” You nodded and he said, “That is impeccable news Bunny, I am so happy for you. And so terribly sorry about all of this. Do you have a follow up appointment?”
“Yes, the week after I get back from England. Wants to see me weekly until I even out.”
The Dr nodded and looked to James who said, “Even gave us some foods to add to her diet to help.”
“That is good, very good. I know all of this is quite possibly overwhelming so I will not take up too much of your time, but please do keep me updated if you do not mind. Is his office far?”
“Lower Manhattan, but he said he can come here to visit me so I won’t have to travel there after the trip to England.” You answered.
“That is very good. Especially if the press if adamant on fussing over this and causing you more stress than you need right now.”
Fuck ‘Em. The sentiment echoed around the table through the dinner with the Brocks, all of whom had brought gifts of reusable diapers, baby blankets, clothes and even a couple ideas for possible prams to help transport the hefty amount of babies to come that you had ample time to choose from. Cribs and layouts for a nursery would come next for the best possible option in one of the spare rooms on your floor. Eddie had a plan, to blow a hole in their story and light their building on fire in the night but he had to wait, that was your plan to not blast this to the world. Your children were not going to be a headline and would slip obscurely through to their adulthood if possible while you tried to keep your face out of the spotlight to do as you wished without this pressure of an audience for the rest of your life. By all natural means of kindness the anonymity that was destined for you had been revoked in that means to protect you from a senseless war.
That was forgotten, at least for the night while James kept you close. Determined more than ever to keep you calm for your sake and that of the babies you were carrying. Cuddles, kisses and explosions of adoration was what he focused on. It would only be a few days after all until the trip could grant you some relief from being the center of focus. School helped, along with those who were boasting on about how President Truman himself had been quoted in several papers on just how cruel the article on you had been executed. He never said if it was true or not while alluded that he did know the truth but the pressure was enough for a pre-airport half assed try at an apology for the execution, however they did not back down on their source’s validity on the death verdict.

Flashes, what seemed to be half a mile of flashes had surrounded the airport that you had landed in on the plane that came in on the private airstrip sent just for you and your family. The dogs and Mr Whiskers were being cared for by the Brocks to calm you all on any worries that they would be bothered by the trip away. “I love you,” James muttered after the kiss you stole at the steps being wheeled over to let you all out. His eyes looked you over in asking, “Feeling up to this?”
You nodded and said, “Just a drive to a castle then we can sleep.”
He smirked and said, “Then we can get you one of those pears since we’ve been in the air all day with three babies.”
Victor teasingly whispered in the sight of the Pilots, “Six,” widening your grins in the joint rise to your feet to exit the plane. All the way to the waiting fleet of cars and out of their view flashes went off that the blanket shielded babies were hidden from the shouting crowds. Though amidst the shouts you could hear several people asking about the articles and for confirmation or a refusal.
Tucked against James’ side you rode with hands on your belly nestling your head into his chest and the side of his neck with coat made of use to keep the cold off and sight of your habitual belly strokes that were new since the heartbeats had begun. Sweetly he murmured to you to break the silence until a night coated castle that came out of nowhere. “How the hell did we end up at a castle for a wedding to a Princess?”
Lowly he chuckled to your French utterance and he murmured back, “I blame my grandfather.” That had you glance up at his smirking self in a purr of, “Wasn’t for his title we could have tried to avoid this.”
“Oh I highly doubt the title had much to do with it seems like the King would have called us out anyways.”
“He does like you.”
“You smoked together, don’t act like you haven’t bonded.”
That had him chuckle, “I would not say bonded, not by a long shot.”
Lit torches were there to help light the pathway also lit by a couple electric lights above the doorway when the cars parked. Right away a line of workers came to fetch the bags and guide the way in as the Butler was down to greet your family and show you up to your rooms. Along the way the itinerary of the busy morning was shared again to warn you of the early wake up call to share the meal that will be wheeled into your suite for a break to ready for the trip to the ceremony at the church.
After halls and stairs the warm fire warmed suite was opened for you and the men with the bags carried each to your assigned rooms, yours being the one without the cribs in them. The Butler however turned to catch your eye, “Baroness Howlett, His Majesty has requested word be sent on to you that his physician Doctor John Weir will be willing to consult with you regarding your health in the evening after the reception when Princess Elizabeth and Prince Phillip will be traveling to their honeymoon.”
“As a mandatory consultation?”
“No, Ma’am, entirely upon your own request. There has been much concern over your health since the news was transferred from across the ocean.”
“Well, thank you.”
He nodded his head, “Sleep well, Ma’am. Sir.”
“You too,” you replied out of habit and he smirked to himself on his way out of the room at the end of the line of men who had settled the bags into their places. “Perfect, now the King thinks I’m dying too and has his own Doctor eager to see me.”
“My Bunny,” Teddy’s grumble for you once everyone was changed had the boy walking to join you with his blanket in hand draped over his shoulder and back to drag behind him at his sister’s next round of fussing had you both grin and help him onto the bed to cuddle around him for the night. Above his head you traded another kiss and tapped foreheads to close your eyes and settle in to sleep.

“Mmm,” Teddy’s grumble said it all in the group of men who opened the curtains to let in the sunrise. Breakfast trays came next for fuel on this long day ahead. Norma and Dawn had more slim fitting dresses in pastel shades and fascinators matching those shades in floral designs. Teddy had his own little suit and the girls had dresses to match their mothers’ they were helped into as James helped you secure your dress for you. The sleeveless peach dress that bled to black around the waist and to peach again on the skirt that like a bell atop layers of sheer underskirts that hung to beyond your knees. Around the cinch at your middle was a belt that helped to keep the folds on the top of the dress in place that he made certain to secure with ample room for your belly after eating at the post wedding breakfast reception. Makeup was easily added with the final touch of your silver fox wrap to keep you warm.
James kept his arm around your back as Teddy nestled under your grey fur wrap while Erik and Edie, both who had flown in a couple hours before you had. To their glance up to your hat you asked, “Too big? I think the hatter went a bit crazy on it.”
Erik smirked answering, “No, perfect.” He said as you tried to ignore the broad church hat, the top peach and the underside black with wavy layers of petal like sheer layers to resemble a flower, a few black feathers were tucked to finish off the exaggerated hat. “Fit for your title.” He said while Edie accepted Dawn’s help to align her own smaller version of your hat on her head.
In two different cars your group split for the drive to the city and church. The crowd was already cheering and buzzed with excitement for every arrival until the Royal Procession would arrive. Stares were ignored and to the assigned seats you settled down and sat with ankles crossed and the boy on your lap who nestled to rest against your chest to keep nice and warm through the ceremony he was curious to see who was responsible for the party.
The Procession of royal relatives began and then paused to louder cheers that signaled Churchill’s late arrival. Comments from the Minister not far from you along the wall in the sideways seating were heard on the less than ideal relatives of the newly non-Prince Phillip who stood near to the altar. All the same hoof steps sounded and heads turned to the doors that did open for the Bridal Party. Elizabeth came soon enough, still clearly flustered at what you had heard whispers of to be a hectic morning upon which her tiara had snapped and she had forgotten her pearls, both which had been repaired and fetched. All the same into James’ side you nestled and watched the vows once you were seated again.
‘To Obey’ once spoken lured hushed glances while you could see the weight of the world that had etched itself into the King’s face. Though it was the troubled pathways of the blood coursing through his body that hinted for you something was wrong. In his slip to his spot a turn of his head found a soft grin on your face that was mirrored on his own that turned to watch his much adored daughter again. Another grand ceremony indeed both broadcast over the radios and captured in part on film from a rather unflattering angle it would appear later. All the same a kiss and the stroll down the aisle had you all on your feet with an exchange of nods and curtseys to the passing Princess.
Another drive found you back in Buckingham Palace to the decorated hall where you caught a few hushed whispers of your name from the staff that was passed who instantly hushed upon view of other guests. Straight to the ballroom you went and paused at the forward step of the aid, who with James’ help to unhook the wrap claimed that and your hat with a nod of his head to let you into a ballroom that had you instantly missing your wrap with eyes focusing on the figure beneath said wrap and the child you were holding.
A lock of eyes to the man who readied to pull out your seat confirmed where you were destined and was ready to guide you into your slot at the table where you stood in wait until the ruling family and couple arrived and had taken their own seats. Filet de Sole Mountbatten, Perdreau en Casserole, and Bombe Glacee Princess Elizabeth was served. And through each course those who were seated around you skirted around the headlines around you and subtle notice of certain bits of the meal you traded with James and the cautious sip he took of your glass of what seemed to be orange juice that you avoided in turn for water at the realization of champagne mixed in the drink was a focus from those serving the food.
“Oh boy,” you muttered at the nine foot fruitcake that had been prepared for the reception. Pieces were picked off with your fork for small bites while Eddie on your right in a few bites finished off his slice and swapped his plate for yours to keep up the image that you were still able to clean your plates gratefully as usual. The close of your eyes a moment to tap a hand to your unsettled belly had James readying one of the final scones for you that was eaten after a drink of the last of your water one of the men along the wall approached to refill for you he used to accept the empty juice glass Dawn had traded for yours after Eddie had finished hers. It was all a shuffle beyond the focus of anyone but those meant to make this reception go on flawlessly and only added to worries that something was wrong with you.
Dancing was opened with the start of the band and Erik with hold of Teddy smiled watching his cousin ease some worries with the smile and hushed conversation alone with James. One couple still very much newlyweds snapped by the photographers in view of the other loving newlyweds. A bittersweet vision of an imagined soon to die woman so much in love with so much to have lived for had those looking on inch closer in a subtle means to cling close to those they love.
