Wonder what other ghosts affect the Voices AU. Watts? Lionheart? Sienna? Fennec Albain? Amber? Vernal? Brawnz, Roy, and May Z? Pilot Boi? Fria? Nicholas Schnee? Gretchen? F Pickerel (the guy who initially captured Tyrian)? Ilia's parents? That huntsman that died in front of RNJR in Volume 4? Fox's uncle Copper? Marcus Black? Bartleby from Brunswick Farms? Ozpin (the host, not Ozma)? Forest? Curious? Neo's parents? Rhodes? Sleet? Hazel? Tock? Tukson? Clover? Vine? Sorry this is a lot.
Nah you’re good, lemme just cover them one at a time. It’s nice to see people excited
Saddle in because this going to be VERY long
Okay first of all we need to establish some ground rules. Not all deaths in Remnant create a ghost, otherwise Jaune wouldn’t be able to function ANYWHERE because if all natural deaths made a ghost the whole world would be infested
So ghosts only appear from particularly traumatic/violent deaths. AKA Grimm, usually. But if you die peacefully in your bed, you don’t make a ghost.
ALSO, if it’s been long enough, or they don’t have a reason to stay, a ghost will fade away. This process is faster for ghosts without their Aura unlocked. As they fade they become harder and harder to understand until their speech is complete unintelligible
For example, Oz and Salem’s daughters have LONG since faded. In Kuroyuri most of the citizens are still around but they’re completely unintelligible and barely corporeal, but Li is the same as the day he died because he has a “mission” to continue protecting the village
So going through the list, I can say that Fria, Nicholas Schnee, and presumably Neo’s parents wouldn’t have ghosts. They all died naturally. But all those other guys would have ghosts
Most of them continue haunting the area where they died, or go off and do their own thing
Some of them would probably follow the gang around if they could but they don’t know where the gang is. For example, Ironwood only knows where they are because he was in the inner circle and so knows the next target is Vacuo
And then there’s the ghosts that don’t follow out of choice
Pilot Boi, for example, tries to find his way back to Atlas. Bartleby continues haunting his farm even after the gang leave. Lionheart is a coward and stays in Haven Academy. The huntsman who died returns to the capital, same with Tock with her respective city. Forest and Sleet stay haunting the ruins of Mantle and Atlas, as do Amber and Tukson with Vale.
That leaves a LOT of ghosts though, so let’s cover them one at a time
Most of them, if they don’t haunt a location, follow around someone who was important to them in life, like Pyrrha does with Jaune
Watts and Ironwood both go to Vacuo, because they know that’s the next target. They bicker the whole way which is very entertaining
Hazel follows Emerald around, a sort of guardian spirit. Since he helped them escape and fought Salem for them, Jaune doesn’t see any reason to try and get him to leave. He does tell Emerald that Hazel is there, though
Fennec follows his brother around, which mostly just consists of the two of them sitting in jail. He tries to comfort his brother, but of course Corsac doesn’t know he’s there
Sienna follows Adam around, constantly berating him, and she helps Pyrrha kick his ass when he finally dies. After that she goes back to Menagerie
Vernal either follows Raven around or returns to the tribe. It’s not like she’d be lonely, there’s plenty of ghosts in the Branwens to keep her company
Brawnz, Roy, and May Z all follow Nolan to Vacuo when he goes. He doesn’t know they’re there until Jaune arrives and can tell him, and then Nolan breaks down crying because his team didn’t let him have to be alone, even after dying
Gretchen, of course, follows her twin around and the two reunite after his death. It’s the happiest and most complete Hazel has felt in decades. Jaune doesn’t even know they were siblings until after Hazel dies and they reunite. After all, she still looks seventeen
F Pickerel probably tries to follow Tyrian around, at least until he joins Salem, and then the man’s spirit is promptly banished. Gretchen she allows to stay because she knows the girl won’t try to interfere, she just wants to be with her brother, but Pickerel could be a problem
Ilia’s parents of course follow her around, from Mantle to Mistral to Menagerie and eventually to Vacuo. Not that she knows, again until Jaune gets to Vacuo and can tell her. Then she has a similar reaction to Nolan
Copper follows Fox until he joins team CFVY and finally has a family again, then the man passes on since his “nephew” is safe and loved
Marcus Black would certainly TRY to follow Mercury, at least until he gets to Everlight. Then the man almost meets a similar fate from Gretchen as Adam does at Pyrrha’s hands. Gretchen isn’t quite strong enough to get him to leave, just enough to get him to keep his distance. Once Hazel dies, though, it’s all over for him
Ozpin, of course, follows Oscar around. Jaune actually figured something is up with Oscar when they first meet because for the first time ever, someone else can hear what a ghost is saying. Only the most recent Ozcarnation remains as a spirit, and as the merge comes closer, Ozpin’s ghost starts to fade
Oz used to be able to see/hear ghosts just like Salem, but as he’s used up his magic he’s lost that ability. He DOES know that Jaune can see ghosts, because the boy makes eye contact with him and reacts when he speaks to Oscar
Rhodes would, of course, follow Cinder, but he gets similarly banished when she joins up with Salem. A Huntsman’s spirit is too dangerous to keep around
Clover follows Qrow around, trying to apologize to the man for his stupidity. The two of them reunite when Vine dies, and they actually also get to reunite with Tortuga as well. With Tortuga back it’s the first time the Ace Ops have felt whole since his death, and all three follow the remaining Ace Ops to Vacuo
And finally, the Curious Cat. CC doesn’t leave a spirit when they die, because Ascension works differently. No body left behind, so I figure also no spirit. Alyx only left one behind because she was killed and because she’s from Remnant she doesn’t ascend

Oppenheimer Review
Tumblr media
OK let’s start with things I didn’t quite care for:
1. The exclusion of Indigenous and Japanese people, which has been a well-detailed criticism on Twitter and in articles:
Tumblr media
“The Pajarito Plateau, where Los Alamos is located, was indigenous homeland for multiple villages of Pueblo people, as well as more than 30 Mexican American families who owned ranches and farms[...]”
We can get into a discussion about which movies are made and how studios would rather fund movie after movie about the ‘tortured white male genius’ than a movie about the Pueblo people or the effects of the bomb on Japan. We can talk about the general boredom of seeing these movies over and over again. But I think that’s a larger conversation. That’s a conversation about which stories TPTB determine get told, that’s a conversation about the systemic racism and barriers in Hollywood and filmmaking because it’s not surprising that a Nolan film didn’t feature BIPOC or nuanced depictions of BIPOC. Nolan is going to Nolan. Dunkirk is an entirely whitewashed film. It is so typical of a Nolan film that I was surprised John David Washington was in Tenet (which I have not seen) and this isn’t to defend him or to let him off the hook, this is just to say that conversation is about the systems in place that allow for Oppenheimer to be a movie while not showcasing other stories, which this person has also indicated
Tumblr media
The defense for Nolan’s omission has been Oppenheimer is about Oppenheimer but I don’t think that defense holds.
Considering that it is first and foremost a character study about a man with conflicting morals, a man who “famously” told Truman that he feels like he has blood on his hands. Considering the movie is meant to take us into the mind of this man, we’re supposed to see what tortures him, what lies heavy on him, considering that there is a scene where he is confronted with the carnage and the destruction of his invention, considering  that in the movie Oppenheimer told Truman they should give the land back to the Indigenous peoples, glossing over the injustices and the atrocities undercuts the fact that this is supposed to be deep dive character study, because Oppenheimer helped cause these things. That’s the point. A pivotal point in the movie comes when Oppenheimer is being asked over and over again when he had moral qualms about the H bomb considering that he made the atomic bomb and whether or not he had quandaries then and the fact that there was a history of people suffering because of this bomb before it dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki would emphasize that question. It’s not a full character study.
Another defense has been that the omission was purposeful as a condemnation of what they did and how they didn’t think about the consequences or thought about the consequences and ignored them/didn’t care about them but there are ways to do that. We can see people being displaced from the land and then afterwards Oppenheimer going to Los Alamos declaring there’s nothing around. If this movie is also about his ego and his tunnel vision and about the dangers of building weapons of mass destruction and their consequences, we can see what the testing of the bomb did to communities while they celebrate the success of the test, it would simply drive the point the movie is making home, it would make it more poignant and complete. When Oppenheimer gives that victory speech after the bomb was dropped, he keeps seeing the people around him burned or dead or crying, there’s no reason why his speech couldn’t at least be intercut with the realities happening in Japan at the time.
Outside of it is simply right for these stories to be showcased and acknowledged, there are too many reasons why Oppenheimer could’ve and should’ve shown these aspects for me to really find any defense viable.
2. I also don’t expect nuanced depictions of women in a Nolan movie but the female characters in this movie are so laughably one-dimensional that I feel like it would’ve been less offensive for him to just not include women at all. Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh do as much as they can with the material they’re given but they’re really not given much and when we’re meant to gain insight into Kitty’s (Emily Blunt) emotional state and to see what the hearing of Robert is doing to her, it’s when he admits on record to sleeping with his ex-wife Jean (Florence Pugh) when he was with Kitty so it’s Kitty imagining him having sex with Jean in a very uncomfortable and entirely unnecessary sex scene. So it’s actually quite funny talking about Oppenheimer and Barbie at the same time because Oppenheimer proves one of Barbie’s points about the way women are perceived and treated through the way the Kens are portrayed in the first 30 minutes of the movie because Kitty and Jean are around to serve Oppenheimer’s plot and Jean actually dies, she commits suicide, and the implication is that while she was suffering from mental health issues, Oppenheimer cutting ties with her led to her death so in the movie anyway, a female character literally dies because the male protagonist is no longer in her life.
Alright, things I liked.
1. Cillian Murphy. Cillian was magnetic onscreen. The beauty of what he can convey with his eyes, it was mesmerizing and he does such a good job playing the charismatic womanizing egocentric asshole but does an equally good job portraying depth, portraying vulnerability and betrayal and guilt and remorse. He inhabited this role, it was great watching.
2. RDJ! RDJ is indeed an actor so watching him in the few Marvel movies that I did watch just always had me like *sigh* they’ve flattened you so it was really fun seeing him really dig his teeth into a role and also seeing the way he changes throughout the movie, particularly the third act when you realize his personal vendetta against Oppenheimer and how his true colours kind of start bleeding through, it was very well done.
3. It was surprisingly funny? Like not laugh out loud funny even though there were moments where I did indeed LOL i.e. “I’m a self-made man.” “I can relate to that.” “Really?” “Yes, my father was one.” the wit and the back and forth and the riffing I quite enjoyed. Seeing all the scientists place bets and get into arguments, I quite enjoyed that.
4. I don’t care for Matt Damon, he annoys me, so when I saw him in the trailer I rolled my eyes and when I saw his introduction to the movie I also rolled my eyes but he and Cillian had a good chemistry so over the course of the movie, I ended up enjoying his scenes with Cillian because they worked so well together and they establish a lot of about that dynamic and they feel comfortable with each other. Although I think my favourite dynamic was Oppenheimer and Isidor. I don’t like Casey Affleck though so that “reveal” just had me like ugh, why.
5. The score. The SCORE. Ludwig Göransson did a beautiful job with the music, giving the movie a sense of scale and tension, it was fantastic.
6. It felt like three hours but it felt like a three hours well spent.

Release: October 20, 2017
Lyrics:
Time flies by when the night is young
Daylight shines on an undisclosed location, location
Bloodshot eyes lookin' for the sun
Paradise delivered and we call it a vacation, vacation
You're painting me a dream that I
Wanna belong in, wanna belong in
Over the hills and far away
A million miles from L.A.
Just anywhere away with you
I know we've got to get away
Some place where no one knows our name
We'll find the start of something new
Just take me anywhere, take me anywhere
Anywhere away with you
Just take me anywhere, take me anywhere
Anywhere away with you
Fun, little less, fun
Little less
Over-over-over-over
Me, me-me-me, me
Me-me-me, me-me-me-me
Oh
Fun, little less, fun
Little less
Over-over-over-over
Me, me-me-me, me
Me-me-me, me-me-me-me
Truth comes out when we're blacking out
Looking for connection in a crowd of empty faces, empty faces
Your secrets are the only thing I'm craving now
The good and the bad, let me in
'Cause I can take it, I can take it
You're painting me a dream that I
Wanna belong in, wanna belong in
Over the hills and far away
A million miles from L.A.
Just anywhere away with you
I know we've got to get away
Someplace where no one knows our name
We'll find the start of something new
Just take me anywhere, take me anywhere
Anywhere away with you
Fun, little less, fun
Little less
Over-over-over-over
Me, me-me-me, me
Me-me-me, me-me-me-me
Oh
Fun, little less, fun
Little less
Over-over-over-over
Me, me-me-me, me
Me-me-me, me-me-me-me
Take me anywhere
Oh, anywhere
Anywhere away with you, ooh, ooh
Take me anywhere
Over the hills and far away
A million miles from L.A.
Just anywhere away with you (Oh anywhere, anywhere, anywhere)
I know we've got to get away
Someplace where no one knows our name
We'll find the start of something new (Oh we'll find the start of something)
Just take me anywhere
Take me anywhere
Anywhere away with you (Anywhere, anywhere, anywhere)
Just take me anywhere
Take me anywhere (Oh take me anywhere, now)
Anywhere away with you (Anywhere, anywhere, anywhere)

SongFacts:
"Anywhere" is a song by British singer Rita Ora from her second studio album, 'Phoenix' (2018). The song was written by Ora, Ali Tamposi, Brian Lee, Nick Gale and its producers Alesso, Watt and Sir Nolan. It was released as a single on 20 October 2017 through Atlantic Records UK. A wistful, dance-pop and electropop love song about escapism, it features a breakdown of stuttering vocal loops. The song has received positive reviews from music critics, and it was chosen as The Guardian's track of the week.
Commercially, the song reached the top-10 in 15 countries, including Ireland, Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom where it peaked at number two, becoming Ora's eleventh UK top-10 single. "Anywhere" has since been certified double platinum in the United Kingdom by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). An accompanying music video, directed by Declan Whitebloom, shows Ora in various locations throughout New York City. Ora performed the song at the 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards.
Ora said that the story behind the song came from Avicii's single "Lonely Together" (2017), which she featured on, as both were "cut from the same cloth", being developed from a similar guitar line by some of the songwriters who worked with her on "Anywhere". Ora co-wrote "Anywhere" with Ali Tamposi, Andrew Watt, Brian Lee, Alesso, Digital Farm Animals and Sir Nolan. The core of the track was written in Los Angeles in early 2017 and stemmed from the initial hook, "Take me anywhere, anywhere away from here", which then became "…anywhere away with you". It was inspired by Ora wanting to go on a road trip with her friends to escape Los Angeles.

'The first atomic bomb blast – the Trinity test in the New Mexico desert on July 16, 1945 – was such a terrifying experience that one observer thought something had gone wrong, and the whole world has gone up in flames.
J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist behind the development of the bomb, later recalled thinking of a line from Hindu scripture as he watched the tremendous flash and column of rising smoke: “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds”.
Recreating the blast for Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic Oppenheimer, which tells the story of the lead-up to, and aftermath of, the Trinity test largely fell to visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson, who is currently back home in Australia working on George Miller’s Furiosa.
Jackson has worked on three films in a row with Nolan – Dunkirk, Tenet and Oppenheimer – using the skills he developed growing up on a Cornwall farm to find practical solutions to filmmaking problems.
Such as how to make a building simultaneously implode and explode for Tenet and how to build an atomic bomb for Oppenheimer.
Jackson knew that Nolan would want to recreate the blast “in camera” – filming something real – rather than with computer-generated visual effects.
“He wanted to do this film without using a CG [computer generated] mushroom cloud simulation,” he says. “He wanted it to have a really earthy, gritty feel.”
As Nolan has said, “I’d done a nuclear blast via computer graphics in The Dark Knight Rises, which had worked very well for that film. But it also showed me that with a real event like Trinity, which was well-documented using new cameras and formats developed for recording that event, computer graphics would never give you the sense of threat that you see in the real-life footage.”
Nolan also wanted to film the blast as near as possible to Trinity’s location to make the scene feel real, firstly for the cast headed by Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer then for the cinema audience.
While they had permission to shoot at what was then called White Sands Proving Ground, the site is still a military base for practice bombing runs and radar tests. So, the crew built their own version elsewhere in New Mexico, complete with the tall steel tower used for Trinity.
After cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema set up cameras in positions simulating the real-life observation points, the crew set off what Jackson remembers as seven or eight explosions, with high explosives underneath barrels of fuel that were launched skywards to create a mushroom cloud.
“We filmed them from lots of cameras,” Jackson says. “So we had a lot of footage at different frame rates and different lenses. We had close detail of that turmoil inside the roiling flame of the explosion.”
They shot these explosions at high speed, slowed them down then brought layers of footage together in post-production.
“They were really just big explosions that we treated in a way to make them feel much bigger than they really were,” Jackson says. “Everything was done very safely and controlled.”
The result is impressive in Oppenheimer, a blast that is both strangely beautiful and horrifying, especially knowing that atomic bombs will devastate Hiroshima and Nagasaki within weeks.
The other big visual effects job on Oppenheimer was representing what Nolan has described as “the thought processes of somebody at the forefront of the paradigm shift from Newtonian physics to quantum mechanics”.
Jackson says he spent two months in special effects supervisor Scott Fisher’s workshop experimenting - “coming up with little devices and trying spinning things and magnets and powders and liquids and flames, looking for things that related to chain reactions and waves and particles and the surfaces of stars”.
They filmed hundreds of clips to create a library of images.
“Some of them could just be cut straight into the film with no work,” Jackson says.
They also had to come up with ways of representing everything from subatomic particles to galaxies, including black holes and stars forming.
Jackson, who was nominated for an Oscar for Mad Max: Fury Road and won one for Tenet, is the creative director of the new Sydney office of international visual effects and animation house DNEG. He describes Nolan as a brilliant filmmaker with a clear vision of what he wants.
“He’s very good at delegating and giving people the freedom to experiment and find solutions,” he says.'

The Dust Bowl was a period of severe dust storms and soil erosion that occurred in the Great Plains region of the United States during the 1930s. The event was primarily caused by a combination of severe drought, unsustainable farming practices, and the failure of the government to manage the land properly.
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, farmers moved into the Great Plains region to take advantage of the rich soil and the Homestead Act, which gave away land to settlers. However, the region was naturally unsuitable for traditional farming practices, as the soil was shallow and lacked organic matter, and the climate was hot and dry.
To make the land productive, farmers began tilling the soil to plant crops, which exposed the soil to erosion by wind and water. They also planted crops year after year without rotating them, which depleted the soil of essential nutrients. As a result, the soil became dry and dusty, and when drought struck in the 1930s, the topsoil blew away in massive dust storms, creating the Dust Bowl.
The Dust Bowl had a devastating impact on the region's ecology and economy. The storms destroyed crops, killed livestock, and made farming impossible, leading to widespread poverty and displacement of farmers. Many people were forced to leave the region in search of work and food, causing a massive migration to California and other western states.
To address the crisis, the federal government implemented a series of programs aimed at soil conservation and land management. These programs included the Civilian Conservation Corps, which employed young men to plant trees and build terraces to prevent erosion, and the Soil Conservation Service, which provided farmers with technical assistance and financial incentives to adopt sustainable farming practices.
Over time, these efforts proved successful in restoring the soil and preventing further erosion. Today, the Great Plains region is a major agricultural center, and farmers have learned to manage the land sustainably to prevent a recurrence of the Dust Bowl.
1930년대 영상을 보니까, 영화 인터스텔라의 먼지 폭풍이 떠오르더라고. 그냥 우연일까 아니면 감독이 더스트 보울에서 영감을 얻은 걸까?
It's possible that the director of Interstellar, Christopher Nolan, was inspired by the Dust Bowl when creating the film's visuals of a dust storm. The Dust Bowl was a significant event in US history and has been the subject of many films, books, and documentaries, so it's likely that it has influenced popular culture in various ways. However, without direct statements from Nolan or the film's production team, it's impossible to say for certain whether the Dust Bowl was an inspiration for Interstellar's depiction of a dust storm.
영화 인터스텔라에서 먼지 폭풍이 일어났던 곳이 어디였지? 주인공들 집이나 고향이기도 했는데.
In the movie Interstellar, the dust storm takes place in the protagonist's hometown of Cooper Station, which is located in a fictional town in the American Midwest. The dust storm is portrayed as a catastrophic event that threatens the survival of the human race, as it is linked to a global crop blight that is causing food shortages and famine. The dust storm scenes in the movie are visually reminiscent of the real-life Dust Bowl of the 1930s, which was a severe environmental and economic disaster that affected the American Midwest.
놀란 감독이 먼지 폭풍 관련 영감을 어디에서 얻었는지 직접적으로 얘기한 적 있어?
I'm not aware of any direct statements from Christopher Nolan regarding the inspiration for the dust storm scene in Interstellar. However, it's possible that he was influenced by the Dust Bowl era or other similar environmental disasters when creating the scene. Directors often draw from various sources of inspiration, including real-life events and other films.
좋아. 인터스텔라의 먼지 폭풍 장면 제작 관련해서 어떤 걸 더 알고 있어? 관심 있으니, 사소한 것도 괜찮아.
Sure! Here are some interesting tidbits about the making of the dust storm scene in Interstellar:
The dust storm scene was shot in Alberta, Canada, which was chosen for its barren, flat terrain and the fact that it experiences regular dust storms.
To create the massive dust clouds, the filmmakers used a combination of practical effects and CGI. They created large amounts of artificial dust and debris, which they blew through the scene using massive fans.
To give the scene a realistic look, the filmmakers used special cameras that could capture the fine details of the dust particles. They also used specialized lenses to create a hazy, atmospheric effect.
To make the scene as immersive as possible, the filmmakers used a technique called "practical sound." They recorded the sound of actual dust storms, which they played through massive speakers on set to create a realistic sound environment for the actors.
The dust storm scene was one of the most challenging sequences to shoot in the film. The actors had to contend with extreme wind and dust, which made it difficult to breathe and see. They also had to wear heavy protective gear to shield themselves from the flying debris.
Despite the challenges, the dust storm scene was praised by critics and audiences alike for its realism and intensity. It remains one of the most memorable moments in the film.

Devil of Dublin by BB Easton is now live!
From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of 44 Chapters About 4 Men (inspiration for the Netflix Original series Sex/Life) comes a dark mafia romance steeped in Irish folklore. I can't remember anymore if my grandfather's eyes were blue or green, but I'll never forget the way they wrinkled at the corners when he laughed at one of his own jokes. Or the way they sparkled with mischief when he told me tales about the magical creatures that dwelled in the forest behind his humble Irish sheep farm--shy fairies who liked to eat tea biscuits, cruel witches who liked to eat children, a moody lake spirit with a taste for expensive gifts.  As a child, I believed every fantastical word. But when he warned me about the mute boy who also lurked in those woods, the one the priest had declared to be the spawn of Satan himself, I refused to listen. Kellen wasn't evil. He was kind, and beautiful, and special, and hurting. He was my friend. And with every summer I spent stolen away with him in those enchanted woods, he grew to become so much more. But when I return to Glenshire as an adult, grieving and engaged to someone else, all those legends quickly morph into nightmares. My grandfather had been right about everything, especially the boy. Meet BB Easton
Wall Street Journal bestselling author BB Easton lives in the suburbs of Atlanta with her long-suffering husband, Ken, and two adorable children. A few years ago, she quit her job as a school psychologist to write books about her punk rock past and deviant sexual history full-time. Ken wasn’t super excited about that, but now that he’s appeared in three of her books and inspired a TV show character, he’s incredibly supportive.
BB’s debut memoir, 44 Chapters About 4 Men, went on to inspire the Netflix original series, Sex/Life, which was viewed by 67 million households worldwide within the first month making it the 3rd most-watched Netflix original series of all time. Because she had so much fun writing 44 Chapters, BB went on to publish four more wickedly funny, shockingly steamy, and heartwarmingly autobiographical books, one for each man in her memoir—Skin, Speed, Star, and Suit.
The Rain Trilogy—a dark, immersive, end-of-the-world romance—was BB’s first work of fiction. Or at least, that’s what she thought when she wrote it in 2019. Then, 2020 hit, and all of her dystopian plot points started coming true. Hoping to fix everything, BB returned with a fun, feel-good romantic comedy called Group Therapy, but alas, the world is still on fire … and so is BB’s desire to write intense, us-against-the-world romances. Her next release, Devil of Dublin, is a dark Irish mafia romance steeped in folklore and family secrets.

Author's Note: I really should be writing that Pierre-Luc Dubois thing. I just don’t have any idea what I want to do with chapter 5 at the moment, so... have this instead. I wanted to write something so I went looking for writing prompts on here. I found this idea and kinda rolled with it. This is my first time writing for Patty, so please be gentle. Sorry for being so slow with the Pierre-Luc Dubois thing. I’m doing my best but inspiration for the fic has kinda hit a wall right now. I’ll try to find inspiration again soon. Promise!! GIF credit to fly-guys!!
Warnings: There’s a few mentions of anxiety, so I’ll include that here. I don’t think anything is too graphic, but I just want to be safe rather than sorry. If you see anything else, feel free to tell me and I’ll include it for you.
Word Count: 2k+
Title: Watching Airplanes by Gary Allan
Additional: The reader is gender-neutral! I’m kinda on a gender-neutral reader kick right now. If you guys would like a gender specific reader, feel free to request one. I’m more than happy to oblige. Also. This is my longest one-shot fic in a long time. I hope I did a good job with it. Let me know if there’s any mistakes or anything that needs fixing. I’ll do my best to fix it!
Additional 2: The locations I used, save for maybe the skate park, are actual locations in Winnipeg. I was so invested in this that I Googled places in Winnipeg that the reader could visit. I also used the petname “small fry” for the reader because I set their hometown as Charlottetown, PEI and PEI is known for potato farming. Hope all of that makes sense! Hope you enjoy this as well!
Looking out the window of the plane, you saw the skyline of Winnipeg coming into view. You grinned because you knew what that meant. It meant that you were close to pulling off the surprise meeting you had planned with your boyfriend, Nolan.
As the plane flew closer and closer to Winnipeg, you felt anxiety well deep in your gut. To compensate for it, you started bouncing your legs in what little room you had in between your seat and the one in front of you. You ran your hands across your things a couple of times to try to quell some of the nervous energy but all that succeeded in doing was creasing some of the wrinkles in your shorts. The person in the seat in front of you glared at you as he took out one of his earbuds.
“Do you mind not jostling the back of the seat,” he asked, pointing to your legs. “I have a bad back and sitting in these seats is bad enough already.”
You held you hands up in surrender as you quickly stopped moving your legs. “Yeah, sorry.”
The man smiled faintly as he stuck his earbud back in and turned his attention forward.
You sighed and ran your hands across your thighs in an attempt to keep your legs from moving. It worked but they ended up twitching a couple of times with anxious energy.
A few minutes later when the plane was announced to be in descent, you felt a little bit of your anxiety ease. You were one step closer to your end goal and that made you feel excited because you were closer to seeing Nolan.
When the plane landed, you felt some more anxiety wash away. You were now safely on the ground and wouldn’t have to worry about a crash getting in the way of you seeing Nolan. You had watched one too many episodes of Mayday the night before you flew. Seeing all of those crashes and catastrophic failures had psyched you out to the point you were convinced something was going to happen to your plane. You weren’t proud of the fact that you had done that but you had told yourself that you were preparing for the worst case scenario, however unlikely it may be.
You let the thoughts of plane crashes and catastrophic failures push themselves to the back of your mind as you collected your carry-on bag. You didn’t want to keep thinking about that while you were in an airport. You would likely drive yourself to some form of panic response if you continued to think about the worst case scenario while surrounded by a bunch of planes.
As you made your way off the plane, you walked calmly to the baggage claim. Watching the carousel spin was soothing what little anxiety you had left. There was something about the repetitive, circular motion that evened out your breathing and heartbeat.
It was a few minutes later when the baggage started to appear on the carousel. You approached it in hopes of finding your baggage among the first few options. You were surprised when you found it, seeing as the flight had been sold out and would’ve had a plethora of baggage. You quickly grabbed your baggage and made your way out of the airport.
When you were standing in the parking lot, you pulled out your phone and ordered an Uber to your hotel. As you waited for it to arrive, you decided it would be a good idea to text Nolan. He had no idea you had come to visit him. You were hoping by receiving this text he would be as excited to see you as you were to see him. As soon as you sent the text, you slipped your phone back into you pocket because your Uber pulled up to greet you. After stuffing your bags in the trunk of the car, you confirmed the address and were on your way to the hotel.
Once you were in your hotel room, you checked your phone again. You noticed that Nolan had texted you back. Excited to see what his response was, you quickly opened the text. You nearly dropped the phone when you read what it had to say.
To: Small Fry
From: Patty Cakes
You’re in Winnipeg??? I’m in Charlottetown! I came to surprise you!
You sat on the bed and ran a hand through your hair. Sighing, you placed your phone face up on the nightstand. You needed to let it sit for a minute while you processed what was happening. You had flown all this way to surprise Nolan and he had had the same idea because he had flown all the way to your hometown to surprise you. It was beyond you how the two of you could’ve possibly had the exact same idea on the exact same day... yet, here you were. You thought that if you both could concoct the same scheme and execute it on the same day, maybe you really were meant for each other.
As you sat there, contemplating what to do next, your phone vibrated against the nightstand. When you looked at it, there was another text from Nolan. You ran a hand through your hair as you picked your phone up to open the text thread.
To: Small Fry
From: Patty Cakes
How about you tell me some places I can visit while I’m here?
A soft smile spread across your face at the prospect of that. The fact that Nolan wanted to make the best of this weird situation by exploring your hometown made you feel really great.
To: Patty Cakes
From: Small Fry
Yeah! I can do that! Will you tell me some places to visit here in return?
Nolan’s reply came almost immediately.
To: Small Fry
From: Patty Cakes
Of course, small fry.
The first place Nolan sent you was his favourite skate park. When you got there, there were a few kids skating around and a few other people swinging on some swings in a little playground to the left of the skate park. You smiled as you watched the kids playing and having fun. When one of the swings became available, you quickly bolted for it to swing for yourself. You had always enjoyed swinging when you were younger. It was calming to you and helped relieve stress. There was something about the constant back and forth motion that you found soothing and relaxing. Swinging today was helping relieve the anxiousness of being in a strange city without Nolan. When you were satisfied that you felt better, you stepped off the swing and made your way to the next location Nolan had suggested.
This location was the botanical garden. Nolan had said walking through the flowers was soothing and seeing them in full bloom was always a wonderful sight. As you walked through the garden, you decided that you agreed with him. The wide array of colours was breathtaking and the aromas and peacefulness of everything was incredibly calming on your psyche. You could drift into many a dream land here if you had the time. After taking a plethora of pictures of the flowers, you moved onto the next location on Nolan’s suggested list.
The next location was the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. You found the tour guide to be incredibly knowledgeable and helpful with every question that was asked of her. You left with none of your questions unanswered and much more knowledgeable than you were when you entered. If you had the chance, you would go back and you could guarantee you would learn new things the next time you went than you did this time.
The final location Nolan suggested was something called The Forks. He explained it as something similar to a mall but not quite a mall at the same time. You found the description incredibly confusing but it made a little more sense when you actually got to there. It was complex of shopping outlets and dining establishments that looked like they were housed in historical buildings. Nolan told you to go wild and go to whichever shopping outlets and dining establishments that looked interesting to you. You took that to heart and by the time you were done shopping and eating you had accumulated a brand new outfit and three pairs of shoes. You had also eaten a hamburger and ice cream from a diner-type establishment in the back corner of the complex. All in all, you had a blast and would totally come here again—hopefully with Nolan next time.
When you got back to the hotel, you text Nolan to let him know that you had a blast going to all of the locations he had suggested. It took a few minutes but Nolan did text you back.
To: Small Fry
From: Patty Cakes
I’m glad, small fry! I had fun at the locations you suggested too.
You went to reply but Nolan texted you again.
To: Small Fry
From: Patty Cakes
Can I suggest one more location though? It’ll be quick because I know you’re probably exhausted and just want to relax.
To: Patty Cakes
From: Small Fry
Sure. One more is fine, Patty. Where am I headed?

FortWhyte Alive. It’s a wildlife area. My sister, Aimee, is gonna meet you there.
You sent a quick confirmation text before trudging out of your hotel room and down to wait for an Uber.
When you arrived at FortWhyte, you noticed a young woman standing by the park entrance. She was holding a sign and what appeared to be an iPad. When she saw you get out of the Uber, she waved you over. You walked hesitantly over to her. You eased a little bit when you noticed that she looked strikingly like Nolan.
“You must be Aimee,” you said, smiling.
“Yes,” she smiled back, placing the iPad on a nearby picnic table and propping it up with a kickstand. “You must be (Y/N), Nolan’s partner.”
“That would be me.”
“Perfect,” Aimee said, pressing a few times on the iPad.
You blinked when Nolan’s face popped up on the screen.
“Hi, small fry,” Nolan said, waving at you. “How’re you?”
“Fine,” you replied, waving back. “It just sucks that we aren’t here together.”
Nolan hummed, pointing to the sign Aimee was holding. You had failed to notice if anything was written on it, having been too focused on the iPad. When you did read it, you felt your mouth go dry as your eyes flicked between the sign and Nolan on the iPad screen.
“Nolan...” you trailed off, running a hand through your hair.
“What does it say, small fry?” Nolan coaxed, biting his lip.
You bit your own lip, heaving a shaky sigh. Aimee looked at you encouragingly, a small smile on her face.
“’Will you marry me, (Y/N)?’” You said, feeling tears prickling the corners of your eyes.
“Well? What do you say?”
You nodded, looking at Nolan as the tears fell down your cheeks. “Yes. God, yes.”
Aimee put the sign on the picnic table and reached into her pocket. When her hand came out, she was holding a ring box. She handed it to you and squeezed your shoulder. You smiled at her as you opened the box. You gasped as you looked between the ring and Nolan. It was nothing special but it was exactly the ring you had been looking at the last time you had been in a jewellery store. You felt the tears fall harder as you slipped the ring on your finger. You handed Aimee the ring box as you showed Nolan the ring on your finger.
“It’s gorgeous, Nolan,” you said, wiping the tears away with your other hand.
“I’m glad you like it,” Nolan said, smiling widely.
Aimee squeezed your shoulder. “Congratulations, you two.”
You smiled at her before looking back at Nolan and seeing the giant grin on his face. You felt butterflies swooping in your stomach and your heartbeat quickening. You had never felt so loved in your entire life.
“I love you, Nolan,” you blurted.
“I love you, too,” Nolan replied without missing a beat.
Today had been the weirdest day of your life but Nolan had proved that weird didn’t always mean bad. What you had thought to yourself earlier in the day definitely rang true now.
You two were meant for each other.

HAYRIDE TO HELL Starts Production Outside Philadelphia, PA
Hayride To Hell, a new horror film from producer/director Dan Lantz, has started production in exurban and rural Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Tumblr media
An original, darkly comic, gruesome revenge story written by Bob Lange and Kristina Chadwick, the film stars horror stalwarts Kane Hodder as Sheriff Jubell (FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: NEW BLOOD) and Bill Moseley as Farmer Sam (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2; Carnivàle). Director of Photography Tom MaCoy, producers Dan Lantz, Rob Margolies (SHE WANTS ME, ALL YOU CAN EAT) and Gretel Snyder (Star Trek: Renegades; who also serves as Assistant Director), and Executive Producers Bob Lange and Kristina Chadwick round out the production team.
Tumblr media
Kane Hodder (Sheriff Jubell in Hayride to Hell)
In the film, a farmer (Moseley) takes his revenge in grand fashion on the unscrupulous town folk who try to steal his farm. Other cast members include Graham Wolfe (The Punisher, Mr. Robot, For Life) as Nixler, Amy Rutledge (RENT-A-PAL, NEIGHBOR, EYES OF THE DEAD) as Patty, and Brooke Stacy Mills (LAW ABIDING CITIZEN). HAYRIDE TO HELL will shoot on location in the exurban farmland west of Philadelphia, PA between now and the end of the month.
Tumblr media
Bill Moseley (Farmer Sam in Hayride to Hell)
Following his breakout role as “Chop Top" in THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2, William Lambert (Bill) Moseley has starred in numerous horror cult classics, including HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA and THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, and he’s well-known as the cook in HBO’s Carnivàle. For his part, Kane Hodder has played horror legend Jason Voorhees in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD, FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN, JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY, and JASON X, as well as the first three films in the HATCHET series (HATCHET, HATCHET II, and HATCHET III).
Tumblr media
Director/Producer Dan Lantz
Dan Lantz spent the first twenty years of his career making TV commercials and reality TV shows before he transitioned into narrative short films, beginning with FELIX MELMAN. That film won several awards and led to Lantz writing and directing more shorts and a web series. In 2011, Lantz directed two low-budget feature-length horror films that got the attention of a few industry contacts. This led to him directing his fourth feature film BLOODRUNNERS, a Prohibition-era vampire thriller starring Ice-T with a worldwide release in 2017.
Most recently, Lantz achieved his dream of creating a film twenty-years in the making to life: ALPHA RIFT. A modern-day medieval sword and sorcery epic story of an average guy fated to hold a secret demon at bay, ALPHA RIFT releases November 19 from Vertical Entertainment. In ALPHA RIFT, Nolan Parthmore (Aaron Dalla Villa, PLEDGE, Gotham, Duels) is running his game store and flirting with his co-worker Gabby (Rachel Nielsen, GREEN PIECE, Mare of Easttown) when destiny comes calling. Nolan discovers he is an heir to the medieval bloodline “The Noblemen” when he dons an antique helmet and calls forth a demon recently released from his supernatural prison: Lord Dragsmere (Philip N. Williams, The Wire, The Blacklist, Broad City). He must quickly learn to harness his power and open the Alpha Rift: the only defense against these supernatural foes. Leading the Noblemen are Richard Corbin (Lance Henriksen, ALIENS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, Millennium) and his lieutenant Vicars (Graham Wolfe) who must guide Nolan as he is forced to become the hero he never wanted to be.
Lantz, who recently won two awards as “Best Director of an Action Film” and “Best Director of a Fantasy,” from the bi-monthly Best Actor and Director Awards-New York, feels lucky to be making his second film in the Keystone State. “First, Pennsylvania may not have cornered the market on creepy, but it sure has a strong minority stake. The locations are dark and brooding—Wyeth country. Second, Pennsylvania does have a tax incentive program and that money is certainly helping a modestly budgeted production punch above its weight. The program is under constant threat to be axed by the state, so I do not know what the future holds. I do hope they keep it as it keeps proud Pennsylvania filmmakers like me from heading to other states.
“It’s an unusual spot to be in, making one film while releasing another,” Lantz concludes. “A lucky spot to be sure. It’s sometimes hard to keep things straight. But it’s a great spot to be in as a parent: I have one child going out into the world and another in gestation.”

It’s here! It’s here! The SnyderCut is here!
Tumblr media
Now can people stop talking about it?
Minor thoughts on ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE.
*Spoilers*.
Tumblr media
I had forgotten nearly everything about JUSTICE LEAGUE so I watched key parts to see how it differs from Snyder’s realized vision.  Remember, Snyder was largely finished with the film so reportedly only 15 to 20% of what ended up in the initial release was directed by Whedon, then he took the hatchet to a lot of Snyder’s footage. The SnyderCut is a mix of piecing back discarded footage and a few new scenes.
I am curious how long Snyder’s theatrical release would have been because there is no way WB would have let him leave it at 4 hours and 2 minutes film (with 3 hours and 53 minutes of it actually being film and the rest end credits - no tag at the end.). The new footage - or what I discern to be new - only amounts to perhaps 10 minutes.
What changes did I notice?
- Thank Rao they fixed (for the most part) Henry Cavill’s face due to mustache-gate.
Tumblr media
Then
Tumblr media
Now
Tumblr media
- The Wonder Woman rescue scene in the beginning was much longer in the SnyderCut. Whedon cut out her talk with the little girl (which granted is a bit too on the nose), and instead added a scene at the end with Diana and kids showing how inspirational she is.  Whedon’s version also left out Snyder Cut’s implication that Diana killed the bad guy.
- In the Whedon version Diana is wearing a red dress as she, Bruce and Alfred tours the eventual Hall of Justice (but felt more like the Justice Society headquarters). In the SnyderCut they changed her dress to black or a deep, dark purple.
- The re-institution of Barry’s rescue of Iris. It’s a nice introduction to Barry and Iris as Kiersey Clemons reprises her role in The Flash standalone.
Tumblr media
-Gone is Whedon’s comic-y bit where Barry draws on an agro dude’s face when he goes to visit his father. I don’t miss the scene, but I appreciated it because the Clerk who handles sign ins is Marc McClure who played Jimmy Olsen in the Christopher Reeves Superman films.  Though, on re-watch it appears McClure was brought back as the cop who pulls his gun out when Superman returns.
-The SnyderCut Bruce and Arthur scene is a smidge longer. Whedon’s version tried to cut to the chase about the Mother Boxes so there’s a mural that Bruce wants Arthur to explain, whereas the SnyderCut it’s just Bruce slyly letting Arthur know he knows his secret and recruit him.
Also - gone is the, “I heard you talk to fishes.” line.
- I feel we get more of Connie Nielsen’s Queen Hippolyta in this than in “Wonder Woman” and “Wonder Woman 1984″ combined.
I’d bow before her anytime.
Tumblr media
-Extended scene between Barry and his dad when Barry tells him about getting a gig at a crime lab. It’s abbreviated in Whedon’s cut so I’m glad Snyder restored it because it is a sweet scene and really displays why Barry is fighting so hard for his dad. It makes it even more of a shame that Billy Crudup will not be in The Flash standalone as there’s a filming conflict. I would really like to see more of them together.
- Maybe I missed it in the original release, but the introduction of Ryan Choi!!
- Much more Cyborg! I really loved the scenes focused on he and his mother and his relationship with Cyrus, as well as Cyborg’s wall of exposition that creatively places him in the locations he’s talking about.
-Explanation of this tagline.
Tumblr media
MARTIAN MANHUNTER! I wasn’t surprised because Harry Lennix has discussed his MAN OF STEEL character General Swanwick being Martin Manhunter, but seeing how it was executed was really nice. Especially the scene with Martian Manhunter as Martha Kent. It touched me because my favorite Martian Manhunter story is a short set in the Golden Age about MM, in his human form, watching over Superboy. He introduces himself to the Kents and they quickly deduce he’s an alien and asks him if he’s come to take Clark from them. It was a story about the care Kal-El had on two fronts. So I really responded to this scene where MM is still caring for Clark by way of making sure Lois deals with her grief.
- Knocked up Lois. I wasn’t even sure if she was actually pregnant or not but at the end when Bruce and Clark are walking to the Kent Farm Bruce tells him “Congratulations” whereas in the Whedon release they’re jabbering about something else.
-Additional scenes of the dystopic future in the aftermath of Superman going rogue. Jared Leto’s brief scene makes up for how much he was cut out of THE SUCIDE SQUAD.  And it’s a continuance of the dance Batman and The Joker has done in the comics and in THE DARK KNIGHT. Two people who just can’t quit each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Snyder showing actors what directors think of their ideas. Jared Leto conviced Sndyer to let him improvise the “We live in a society” line that every went mad over on Twitter, but it’s not in the final cut.
Tumblr media
- I loved Snyder’s Nolan-esque end montage. Gone is the Lois Lane narration, replaced by Joe Morton’s Cyrus Stone in a message to Victor. This works better because five of six of our heroes have parental issues : Victor and his dad, Clark and Jor-El and an overprotective Jonathan, Bruce’s dead parents, Aquaman’s absent mother and Barry’s dead mom and jailed father. So ending it with some peace for Victor and Arthur leaving Mera and Vulko but at least now he has a connection to the Atlantean world and new beginnings for the rest was a better choice.

This is going to be a huge setback for anyone involved in the film industry, whether it's commercials, TV shows, or movies. From the LA Times,
"Crew death renews concerns over film set safety amid COVID-19"
https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2020-09-01/crew-death-commercials-film-set-safety
John Nolan, a Texas-based assistant director, went into cardiac arrest and died Aug. 26 after weeks of battling the illness, according to public journal entries made by his family on the website CaringBridge.
Although it’s not known where or when Nolan contracted the disease, he developed symptoms of the virus after he worked on a commercial production in Austin, Texas, in mid-July and tested positive for COVID-19 on July 29. By Aug. 5, he was in intensive care at a Georgetown, Texas, hospital and placed on a ventilator, according to the Nolan’s family account. ...
He was a second assistant director, with his son as a production assistant, on a six-day ad shoot for insurance company State Farm from July 9 to 16, according to Santa Monica-based production company Tool of North America.
The company said it could not discuss the private medical information of employees but said that it tested crew members’ temperatures daily on the set, and no one failed the test. Tool also said it used a zoning system for social distancing, gave protective equipment to the crew and had a COVID-19 compliance assistant on set, as well as a medic and sanitation crew.
“John’s passing is tragic, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family,” said Matt Van Hoven, spokesperson for Tool of North America. “We take all available options regarding safety precautions very seriously.”
He added that it was continuing to work with the Assn. of Independent Commercial Producers, or AICP, L.A. County Department of Public Health and unions regarding health and safety measures. They “are rigorously following these and other state and federal guidelines,” he said.
Texas guidelines require temperature testing while L.A. County guidelines exempt short-duration films such as commercial shoots from testing.
Also,
The assistant director’s death has ignited debate on social media about the safety of returning to film sets, according to John Elmore, a 20-year veteran assistant director and colleague of Nolan’s. Some have raised concerns about the lack of testing on sets, while others defended the production.
Commercials, which tend to have smaller crews and shorter shoots than television or film productions, don’t require COVID-19 testing under local health orders or industry guidelines.
“Some people are afraid,” Elmore said, who worked on the 2002 “Spider-Man” blockbuster and television series “The Oath.” “They’re thinking of just getting out of the business completely. It’s important to know what happened and what still needs to be done for this industry to get back to work safely.”
The untimely death of a crew member highlights the conflicts faced by filmmakers and workers on sets as they resume production. While many in the industry want to return to filming, with thousands of jobs lost in the hiatus, they have to balance the risks of exposure to COVID-19 as sets are typically crowded locations. Producers, unions and health officials have been working together for months to create a series of safety protocols for sets.
“If any good can come from John’s passing, it would be for the production side of our industry to be more mindful this COVID thing is still out there waiting for us,” said Ben Ketai, a Los Angeles-based film and television director who worked with Nolan for several years on his TV show “StartUp” that first aired in 2016 on the streaming video service Crackle. “Film sets are busy, crowded places and it’s very easy to get into a comfortable rhythm and let your guard down."

Chapter 20: Off Radar, Pt 2
"Doctor...I'm not sure the patients can take much more. We risk losing them if we continue at this voltage," one of the technicians warned.
"We are not stopping," the doctor replied. He was short, with glasses and dark blond hair. His eyes were cold and unfeeling, as he examined the raw data. His life's work had come down to this. He had always walked a thin line between medicine and what was considered very fringe, experimental practices within the field of medicine. Before now though, much of his work was theoretical. He had never had the funding or clearing to conduct his experiments on living specimens. Especially such intriguing specimens.
He didn't know what had happened up on that plane, but the people that came back were definitely different than they were before. That's where he came in. They wanted and needed to know if the reported gifts these people might have now could be used, exploited and most importantly controlled at will.
"Keep proceeding as planned," he said, as he went upstairs to his office, while the patients were continued to be put through hell.
~*~
Henry was still feverish, but the fever reducer medicine and addition of ice packs had brought him down out of the danger zone for the moment. He wasn't out of the woods yet, but he seemed to be calmer, though he was still muttering various phrases in Spanish.
"I would say this is more evidence that something indirect is going on here. I've never seen anything like it," Regina mentioned to them quietly.
"You think he has a mental link to one of the passengers and he's feeling what is happening to them?" David whispered.
"It sounds insane...but there is nothing wrong with Henry besides this fever. Nothing else makes any sense," she replied.
"Then we have to hope Emma finds this man and helps him. That's the only thing that will help Henry," Margaret said, as David put his arm around her shoulder.
"Emma won't let us down," David assured her with a kiss to her hair.
~*~
Killian looked at her out of the corner of his eye and saw that she was preoccupied on her phone.
"Emma...this could lead nowhere. I need to know what's really going on," he finally said, just as he saw her crane her neck.
"Wait…" she said, as he slowed down.
"What do you see?" Killian asked.
"I see the bus...it's up there on that farm," she replied, as he pulled the car off on the side of the road. They got out and observed the structure from a distance, as Emma snapped some photos with her phone. It quickly became very clear that this was no ordinary farm, for they could clearly see armed mercenaries guarding the property.
"Okay...government black site. Come on Emma...level with me. What the hell is this all about?" he asked, a bit crossly. She was about to answer, but saw a vehicle from the property approaching them.
"Crap…" she hissed, as she opened the trunk and grabbed a screwdriver, before driving it into one of the front tires.
"What the hell are you doing!?" he hissed.
"Making it look like an accident that we are pulled over!" she hissed back, as two armed men got out of the now stopped vehicle.
"What seems to be the problem?" one of the men asked.
"Flat tire…" Emma called. Killian looked at her and went to the trunk to pull out the spare.
"Fortunately, we have a spare and then we'll be on our way," he said, gauging the reaction of the two men. They didn't give much away, but it was clear there was no trust. Whatever they were guarding...they didn't want anyone coming near the property. Unnervingly, Killian changed the tire under their watch and once it was finished, they got back in the car. He nodded to them and started the engine, as he slowly drove off. They found another enclave and pulled off again. Killian looked behind them and got out of the car when he was satisfied that they were not following them. Instead, it seemed like they were heading back to the property and there was much movement.
"Okay...we just found a government black site. Out with it, Emma," he said. She sighed and looked at him, before proceeding to tell him everything.
~*~
"Doctor…" one of the subordinates called.
"What is going on?" he asked.
"We have reason to believe this location may be compromised," the man replied. The doctor cursed inwardly and retreated into his office.
"I will contact headquarters…" he hissed. He didn't like the idea of having to relocate everything and delay his experiments further, but getting caught would ensure no experiments at all.
"See to it that our operation continues for now. The less interruptions, the better," he said, as he sat down at his desk and made the call.
~*~
"And that's why we're here," Emma finished with her explanation and carefully studied his features to gauge his reaction.
"You think Henry is sick...because of one of the missing passengers?" Killian asked.
"I know what it sounds like...but these Callings, we've saved people. We've helped people with them," Emma replied.
"You also almost screwed up my career as well," he reminded her.
"And I didn't force you to take the fall for that! These things...whatever they are...I got that one wrong," she said. He was about to say more, but they saw the car with the mercenaries from before approaching again.
"Get in...they won't be as friendly this time," Killian said, as they got in and a bullet clipped the mirror.
"Bloody hell!" Killian cried, as they fled and Emma sent the photos to her brother, before calling him while they made their escape.
~*~
"A government black site?" David asked, as he was in the hallway on the phone with Emma, as Margaret stepped out with him in time to hear that. He looked at her in concern and her arms went around his waist.
"Are you okay?" David asked, as he continued to listen and then sighed.
"Okay, thanks Emma...I got the photos. I think I know what I need to do next," he replied, as he hung up the phone and looked down at her.
"She found the missing passengers?" Margaret asked.
"She only saw one outside, being led inside a red door, but she did see one of the vans there on this property, which was crawling with mercenaries, possibly military," David replied.
"Oh my God...then they might have them, after all," she realized.
"It's possible...the mercenaries were wearing a patch on their uniform for something called the Unified Dynamics System, but I haven't had a chance to look into the company yet. Emma's going back to the station to do so...but," he said.
"But?" she asked.
"There might be only one way to find out more...but I would need to leave for a while and I don't want to," he said.
"I don't want you to either...but if it can help Henry…" she replied.
"Then I have to try. I just don't know if it will help and I hate the idea of leaving you both," he replied.
"I know...me too, but I also know that you're doing so to save one of our babies," she said, as she slid her arms around his neck and rested her head against his shoulder.
"I know that you're our hero and that you'll be out there trying to save our family," she assured. He looked into her eyes.
"I love you so much…" he said, as he pressed his lips to hers in a passionate kiss.
"I won't be long," he said, as they went back into the room. Henry was still sweating and restless. David kissed him on the forehead and then kissed Margaret one more time, before hurrying out.
~*~
Emma and Killian arrived back at the station and he parked the car.
"You didn't have to hide it, you know...this thing," he said.
"I just told you that I hear voices in my head and that my nephew might be channeling something that's happening to another missing passenger," Emma replied.
"And from anyone else...I wouldn't believe it. But from you...I would and I've never betrayed your trust," he reminded her.
"I know…" she admitted, as they went inside and they began to research the Unified Dynamics System.
"That logo matches what was on the uniform," he said.
"And they employ special ops for security," she replied.
"Looks like they do a lot more than that...a company with a lot of tentacles," he agreed.
"Then I guess we wait to hear from David," she said.
"Wait...what is your brother going to do?" Killian asked.
"He's going to confront Vance," she replied.
"That sounds like a terrible idea," he warned.
"He doesn't care. He's a father trying to save his son," she said gravely.
~*~
David arrived at the Department of Homeland Security building and stormed inside, but was immediately stopped by security.
"My name is David Nolan. I was on Flight 828 and I need to see Director Vance, immediately," he demanded.
"Unless you have an appointment, Mr. Nolan, you need to leave," the security guard said, but over the man's shoulder, David saw another man there and attempted to place him. He could have sworn he had seen him before, but couldn't place him.
"You...can you get me in to see Vance?" he asked. Gold smirked.
"Gentlemen, I can take it from here," Gold said, as he hobbled forward on his cane.
"Director Vance will be more than happy to see Mr. Nolan. I can take him there," he said. The guards were reluctant, but had been ordered to obey any orders from this man as if they were Vance's. They stepped aside and David followed the shorter man.
"Have we met before?" David asked.
"Actually, we have not, but I know a great deal about you, Mr. Nolan. A pleasure at last," he said, as he put his hand forth. David looked at him suspiciously, but then shook it with reluctance.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"My name is Mr. Gold," he replied and David's eyes widened, as the elevator door closed.
"Mr. Gold…" he uttered, as he remembered that name from all the legal and financial forms after his mother died. Mr. Gold's pawn shop and holdings had always sent Jefferson to take care of their financial and legal items necessary. But they had never met the actual financial adviser behind it all.
"You...you're our financial adviser?" he asked in disbelief. He made a gesture with his hand that seemed to confirm that.
"What do you have to do with any of this?" David asked.
"Nothing, except that I have been brought in to consult on the mystery of flight 828 and I must say, the whole thing fascinates me," Gold replied.
"Well, it doesn't fascinate me. It might be killing my son," David snapped. Gold frowned.
"That is unfortunate. Perhaps you can explain it to me then," he said, as they arrived on the top floor and David followed him to Vance's office.
"What is this?" Vance asked curiously, as David stormed into his office with Mr. Gold.
"This is about my son and the government abducting passengers," David said.
"What are you talking about?" Vance asked with scrutiny, as David showed him the photos on his phone.
"This...there are ten missing passengers and we think they are being kept at this black site," David answered.
"Know anything about that?" he asked. Vance looked at the photos and then at David.
"No…I'm afraid I don't," Vance replied. David scoffed.
"As if you would tell me if you did. They're doing something to these missing passengers and it's killing my son!" he claimed.
"Mr. Nolan...I don't know what's going on with your son, but I have no idea what you are talking about," Vance said, as a couple security guards arrived.
"Please see Mr. Nolan out," he said. David shrugged the men off and stormed out, but not before giving both men a hard look.
"Send me the coordinates...I'll see what I can do," Gold said, as he handed his card to David. He looked at him one more time, before being led out.
"What the hell is going on?" Vance hissed.
"Possibly the break in all this that we've been waiting for," Gold said.
"All the passengers are accounted for," Vance insisted.
"Are you positive? What do you know about this Unified Dynamics Systems?" Gold questioned. Vance sighed and picked up the phone, but then set it back down.
"I have the coordinates...let's take a drive," Gold suggested and Vance agreed.
~*~
The doctor slammed the phone down and stormed out of his office and down to the lab where the passengers were still withstanding the grueling experimentation.
"We've been ordered to relocate. Prepare to move the patients," he said crossly. He was very unhappy about the orders, as it meant delay in his work, but they had been exposed and couldn't afford to be caught.
~*~
David arrived back at the hospital room, feeling defeated. He had seemingly made no progress with Vance and now had to face his wife and tell her that he had failed.
"David!" Margaret called, as she rushed to him and he hugged her tightly.
"Baby...he's awake and his fever broke," she said, as her face was alight with hope. He became perplexed at that, but hugged her again, before going to their son's bedside.
"You did it…" Margaret said, as she brushed Henry's hair away from his eyes.
"Except I didn't...Vance claimed he knows nothing about the missing passengers. He barely listened to me," David confessed.
"Then...how did the connection between Henry and Anton break?" she wondered.
"I don't know, which means this might not be over. I'm sorry, my darling...I failed," he said.
"No...you absolutely did not fail. Whatever you did...it stopped the threat to our son," she replied.
"But for how long?" he wondered.
"Maybe long enough to find the missing passengers," she said.
"I hope so," he said, as he held her tightly, while Regina checked him over.
~*~
Vance and Gold drove out to the coordinates that David had given them and found a small farm off the beaten path. They pulled up to the property and looked around, before getting out. Vance motioned for his agents to move in and they cased the entire area.
"It's abandoned, Sir!" one of them called back soon after entering the premises.
"Something tells me not for long," Gold mentioned. Vance looked down and spotted something in the dirt. He took a glove out of his pocket and gently picked up the item with it, finding that it was a bandage, complete with blood on it.
"I would say that you're right," Vance said, as everything David had claimed was suddenly starting to come to fruition.
"So...we have missing passengers and it's being hidden from the NSA. That's not easy to do," Vance said.
"It is if the people that are hiding it are from within your own ranks," Gold surmised. That thought disturbed Vance greatly and he was determined to get to the bottom of this now.
~*~
After Henry's temperature returned to normal, he was normal again, like there had never been anything wrong with him in the first place, Regina discharged him and they took him home. Robert brought Olive home that evening and they spent the night all cuddled together in the same bed. David held Margaret close, as the kids slept on either side of them in their bed. Every few moments, Margaret would brush her hand across Henry's forehead just to reassure herself that he was no longer feverish.
"I still feel like I failed...like whatever is going on has only been delayed," he murmured.
"Even if it is...you did not fail, my love and I know you. You don't give up," she replied, as she pecked him on the lips.
"You're right...I won't give up, until I'm sure our family is safe," he promised. She smiled and cuddled against him and they found themselves quickly falling asleep with their kids.
~*~
Killian poured over the maps and photos that they had taken of the small farm that was turning out to be a black op sight and he caught sight of a photo of Emma. He stared at her photo for a moment and sighed, before looking away. Despite his reluctance to get involved in this and initial skepticism of Emma's explanation, they really appeared to be onto something.
"Hey...I just got word. Turns out that Vance went to the farm...and it's deserted now," Emma said, as she came back with fresh coffee.
"Then we were right...they have missing passengers and Vance wasn't involved," Killian said.
"Which kind of puts us back at square one," Emma replied.
"True...but we found them once. We can do it again," he said.
"I hope so...David is certain that we need to find this Anton Garcia or Henry is still in danger," Emma replied.
"If Vance doesn't know about this...that's telling. I mean, the NSA pretty much knows all...unless," Killian said.
"Unless?" she asked.
"Well, if the military wanted to hide it from the NSA, they have their ways," he replied.
"It would make sense that the military would have an interest in the passengers. It's no secret that they've already suggested that we might be a threat to national security," Emma said.
"Still...to break away from the NSA on a matter of supposed National Security violates protocol," he replied.
"Our history is littered with the government doing shady stuff in the name of National Security," she reminded him.
"Very true...let's keep digging into this Unified Dynamics Systems. They seem like the perfect front if there ever was one," he agreed, as they returned to work.
~*~
Anton muttered something unintelligible, as his bed was wheeled into the new underground facility. The doctor oversaw the set up from above and answered his cell phone as it rang.
"Yes…" he answered.
"The interruption was an unfortunate delay, but we will soon be back online and resume our operation," he reported...

Pick of the Month: Fortify Kitchen & Bar
Author: ArtsyChowRoamer
Pick of the Month
FORTIFY KITCHEN & BAR IN CLAYTON, GEORGIA
One of the main reasons we decided on a road trip to Clayton, Georgia recently was all the noise we had been hearing about the Fortify boys. The friends from days at Lake Rabun together that led them to open their own place down the road a piece. This post will give you all the info on why they are my pick of the month.
Owners Jack Nolan and Chef Jamie Allred have put together a stellar farm to table concept which these days seems to be the mantra of every restaurant. But they really mean it; putting together a video on their website and naming over 20 different local farms they are sourcing from to prove it.
This kind of resources allows Chef Jamie to change up his offerings seasonally. Having just released the fall menu you might think the usual suspects would be on there but there are more than a few surprises and his own take on some oldies but goodies.
RESERVATIONS SUGGESTED
It was suggested to us before that reservations were a good idea even before Covid restrictions limited seating to get the social distancing right. Even though we were visiting mid week 6:30 was the earliest available the week before.
I sent a message that we would like to get in earlier if they had a cancellation at opening time of 5. Don’t roll your eyes at that. We just have found that getting in at opening time insures the least number of people, the speediest service for shorter stays and the best sanitized situation for the evening.
Happy was I to receive a call that day around 2 that they would be able to take us at the earlier time as requested. We left our hotel up the street and walked the few blocks where crowds were already gathering at the door; some with reservations and some without hoping the earlier time would net them a sneak in.
CASUAL COZY ATMOSPHERE
The host and hostess were wearing masks along with our server I was glad to see. The bartender was also masked up and busy with social distanced diners being seated at the bar. This reassured me feeling like they were putting safety front and center for their customers.
The restaurant had a nice casual atmosphere with a coziness from metal details, old brick and traditional light fixtures with a modern twist. I noticed a sign with an arrow that said Local Art and realized that everything on view was most likely for sale by artists living in the community.
I took the opportunity to snap a few photos for this post to give you an idea of what to expect and some of the art the restaurant sports on it’s walls. The waiter dropped by to give us our menus and tell us about the specials for the day while we decided what kind of wine to order.
They have a very nice selection so I tried the William Hill Estate cabernet while my husband decided on a German white Riesling. Both selections were excellent and were terrific with the different breads offered in our bucket along with flavored butters.
FIRST COURSE
Since fall was in the air I decided that a good soup was going to be my first course and went with the Butternut Squash with pumpkin seed pesto, fried sage and a maple drizzle. My husband went for the Short Rib soup on the specials list.
Soups, salads and snacks ranged in price from $6-13. Choices included usual suspects like a Spinach or Caesar salad and fried green tomatoes but Chef’s take and local sourcing added ingredients like pickled red onion, candied bacon, roasted sweet potatoes, poached apples, goat cheese and house made dressings.
Not the usual suspects would be coca cola braised pork cheeks, fried gouda fritters or clams done in a Mexican style. Let me just say those fritters are addictive. One arrived in the middle of my husbands short rib soup and it was heaven in of itself.
The meat was fork tender and tasty like eating barbecue with this crispy melty thingy going on! Hard to describe but most definitely delicious. My soup was luscious, thick and rich with cream. The pesto and sage provided background flavors and texture with added sweetness from the maple drizzle; a perfect cold night Southern dish that will please throughout the fall season.
HARD TO CHOOSE AN ENTREE
We looked over the menu again to pick an entree and it wasn’t easy. He went with the duck breast in a roasted red pepper sauce and I wanted to try seafood and waffled back and forth between the trout and fried shrimp platter ending up with the shrimp. Pricing ranged from $18-35.
Both dishes arrived in a timely fashion as I snapped my pics with nicely composed plates. The only criticism I would offer in this area would be wiped plate rims to meet a more perfect expectation of this level of dining.
I tried the duck first. We were asked if we wanted it medium rare or more. We ordered it medium rare which is the way I think duck breast should be cooked giving you a crispy skin hopefully with a texture on the meat similar to a medium rare steak.
A word about duck expectations. My husband is from Eastern Europe where the duck is most often offered with the bone thereby allowing them to render that duck into fall of the bone capacity. My husband is always expecting that even when it isn’t possible!
I reminded him you can’t do that with no bones-it will only dry it out and make it tough. I loved the dish both texturally and taste wise with a polenta cake and crispy relish of shallots, mushrooms and grapes. Having said that if there were anything to wonder about it was the red pepper sauce.
Lovely in conception but not quite sweet enough for duck I think but I could be wrong. My husband loved the sauce. My dish felt like a homegoing homage to the South with the fried shrimp set off with collard greens, coleslaw and hushpuppies.
Chef’s version of cocktail sauce was a miss for me without the horseradish zing you want. I asked for the Remoulade which was much better and seemed to work well with the other flavors overall. Something called comeback sauce was offered as well.
I’m thinking my next trip will include the trout with lemon scented rice pilaf, pecan roasted brown butter and fresh dill. You probably would be happy with the beef, chicken or pork dishes on offer as well. Sides like fried rice, Napa slaw, beer battered onion rings and buttermilk mashed potatoes all speak to seasonal freshness with a wink to Southern preparation.
DESSERT AND SPECIALTY COCKTAILS
While we were too full to try dessert the choices were tempting and several included chocolate. The photo below will give you a good idea what to expect if you have a sweet tooth.
Besides having nice wine selections Fortify is pretty proud of their signature specialty drinks. There are 8 on the menu for $10 that range from a sour, to an old fashioned along with a Pink Panther and a Smoking Jacket. There is a pleaser for any taste here. The video below will give you a better idea.
A WORD ABOUT PI
Fortify became such an instant hit that they decided to branch out and add the location next door known as Fortify Pi and it’s all about the pizza. You can have one of their designs with the latest and freshest ingredients or you can make your own with different price levels of choices.
They are making some good pie in that restaurant. Sitting at the bar, outside or at a socially distanced table this more casual atmosphere makes for a lively entertaining lunch or dinner choice especially if you can’t get in to the other location. They were crowded as we were leaving from dinner.
CONCLUSION
All in all we enjoyed our road trip to this little gem of an artsy community. You don’t normally find this level of dining and commitment to ingredients in the North Georgia mountains. I can highly recommend you visit the area and don’t miss either of their locations. You won’t be disappointed.
If you enjoyed what you read you might also like other posts under Edible Fare and on Clayton, GA too. Hey, don’t be a stranger! If you visit, let me know what you ate and what you thought. Look for more upcoming posts on this area soon. Until next time…
Cheers!
