stories that spoke to us: MDZS & the Chinese diaspora experience

From March to April 2023, Chinese diaspora fans in the MXTX Diaspora May discord server and Danmei Diaspora discord server compiled a list of MDZS fanworks that rang true to their diaspora experiences. Works that used canon as a setting were excluded, but everything else was welcome. Most, if not all, of these stories were written and/or podficced by Chinese diaspora fans. 

This is not a comprehensive list of all MDZS fic with diaspora settings, nor do the works encompass all the diverse experiences of Chinese diaspora. If you would like to contribute to the ongoing recs sheet and future fanwork compilations, please contact @dmdiaspora on twitter or tumblr. You may also send information about a fanwork rec you’d like to add.

Without further ado, we present a list of the diaspora stories that we felt represented our voices. These recommendations have been categorized by in-story identity markers and settings.

Hi! Do you know any fics where wanxian meet in early childhood, like, before the jian clan took wwx in? I'm new to mdzs and a bit overwhelmed by the amount of fics 😅

Early Wangxian

There are a number of fics out there that have Wei Ying and Lan Zhan meet as children and grow up together. Time-travel of one sort or another is usually involved. Here are three of my favorites.

The Young Masters of Four Seasons Manor by gaotamao 22 chapters, 92k word, complete

I previously reviewed this story here. It is a mix of Módào Zǔshī and the Untamed, as well as Faraway Wanderers and Word of Honor (a quite different tale that was turned into a Chinese drama, well worth watching.) The story involves two Immortals acting as adoptive parents of our two heroes.

It starts with the Universe turning back time 23 years for Reasons. And Immortals taking note.

All will be well when the day is done by abCEE 8 chapter, 86k words, complete

In which Yu Ziyuan has a nightmare of her future life and arranges things so that Jiang Fengmian never finds Wei Ying. Rather than killing the child outright, she dumps Wei Ying's fevered body in Caiyi instead …

I just reread the last chapter. The ending produces tears every time.

The Dreams of Youth by sami 25 chapters, 85k words, complete

Another story in The Same Moon Shines universe, this one starts with a five-year old Lan Zhan aiding his mother's escape from Gusu. From there they go to Yiling to rescue a very young Wei Ying, and eventually end up traveling through Meishan Yu territory, where they meet a matriarch known as "Popo".

Canon and non-canon events ensue.

there is a fic that scratches this particular itch at least in part, and it breaks my heart every time i read it: a tower that casts a shade by roquen (aka @fincalinde)

brief excerpt just because the beginning paints such a vivid portrait of before and after:

There had been a time when Jin Ling had been old enough to have some understanding of the proceedings in Glamour Hall and yet young enough that he was not expected to behave. For one hot, uncomfortable summer he had liked to browbeat his amahs into taking him to the Hall, where he would immediately be permitted to climb up onto the chair at the centre of the dais in order to rest his burning forehead against the golden armrest that was always cool no matter how stifling the atmosphere.

He would like nothing more than that now: to draw up his feet, to curl up and soothe his aching head while half-listening to his xiao-shushu take care of everything in the world.

"Jin-zongzhu?"

The man standing in front of the dais has concern in his eyes and the hint of an amused curve at the corner of his mouth. Jin Ling cannot remember his name.

"We would need to consider such a proposal carefully," Jin Ling says.

"But aren't the benefits self-evident? The accountants of the Anping Rong are famed across the jianghu for their skill and dedication. We can surely assist Jin-zongzhu in uncovering the mismanagement of the watchtower funds so the monies can be fairly reapportioned back to the defrauded clans."

Jin Ling doesn't have his xiao-shushu's ability to refuse with grace. He doesn't even have his jiujiu's ability to refuse without grace.

"The Jin Clan of Lanling is appreciative of the generous offer of the Anping Rong," he says, and with some effort does not glance across the hall to where his jiujiu lurks like a gathering storm. "However we are already receiving the expert assistance of the Jiang Clan of Yunmeng. Their accountants will release the results of their investigations soon."

"Soon?"

"Soon," Jin Ling squeaks, and has no choice but to clear his throat. "Soon."

When lotuses bloom in Wei Ying’s pond in the middle of winter, he recognizes them at once for what they really are: an auspicious sign. It cannot be meant for him, though. He is nothing but a modest farmer. Such a miracle has to have appeared for someone else: a cultivator, a nobleman, a king.

And so, he sets off for the capital, with the sole aim of letting the royal family know about it.

Little does he know that this decision will start a chain of events that will help expose a dark scheme against the crown—a fact that will earn him the gratefulness of a king…and the love of a prince.

It's a dark, dark night, but the sun will rise eventually.

In honour of Dracula daily starting again, have a couple of ChengQing fics with vampire Jiang Cheng, both with some very interesting world-building and magnificent feeding scenes:

swaying forward by andreacsenge, sort of canon universe but with vampires, Jiang Cheng is dying in the Yiling Supervisory Office and Wen Qing is not about to let her little brother act as a blood bag;

and taste the blame if the flavour should remind you of greed by Misila, modern setting with vampires, Jiang Cheng is very hungry and Wen Qing has a clear idea of what to do to solve the problem (also Jiang Cheng can turn into a bat!!!)

There was a sudden shout of, “Rich-die!” and then a weight slammed into Lan WangJi’s leg.

There was a laugh—not Wei WuXian’s laugh—from the door, Lan WangJi turned and saw that there were a couple elderly people standing in the door as children filed into the room. Lan WangJi bowed to the elderly people in the door and then one little old lady said, “Is that why you call Xian-gege, Xian-die? Because you have two fathers?”

Lan WangJi’s ears turned red and the elderly people laughed. At the end of the line of children Wei WuXian entered the building. “Lan Zhan what are you doing here?”

“So we finally know little A-Yuan’s honourable surname, Lan Yuan is a good name,” said one of the Grannies.

It took Wei WuXian a moment to realise that it was A-Yuan’s grandmother; she smiled and winked at Wei WuXian. But no one else seemed to realise which of the grannies had spoken so they all tittered about how handsome Xian-gege’s husband was. Wei WuXian looked worried at A-Yuan, wondering how he would react, but the boy seemed to only have eyes for his Rich-gege.

Before he could say anything A-Yuan yelled, “To see us Xian-die! Right Rich-die?”

“Yes,” said Lan WangJi and he scooped the boy up in his arms and then added, “I have a message for your Xian-die as well. Perhaps we could go for a meal?”

Just as the Snow Melts begins on a warm almost spring day when Wen Qing orders a depressed Wei Wuxian to Yiling to spend time with A-Yuan by the river. It turns into so much more, as the Wen and Wei WuXian slowly merge into life in Yiling, leaving the Burial Mounds to the dead.

This is a sweet story of Xian-gege, teacher of children by the river, and the people who know and love him.

An accidental free school is founded in Yiling. Because of his new responsibilities with the dispersed Wen and the many young children he teaches, Xian-gege decides he cannot attend the 30 day celebration of his nephew, Jin Ling. The events beginning with the ambush at Qiongqi Pass do not occur, at least not in the well worn paths of canon.

The story unfolds differently, and includes the destruction of the Stygian Tiger Seal and its aftermath - the sun over Yiling is blotted out by hundreds of cultivators dressed in gold, the Yiling Laozu is declared dead, defeated by the Jin.

Life goes on, with Lan Wangji and Wen Yuan (now Lan Yuan) and a host of other canon characters making appearances now and then.

The story continues through the years leading past a sacrificial array meant to bring back the Yiling Laozu and into a final Discussion Conference in Yungmeng.

To my mind, this is an entirely satisfying canon divergence, complete with relative happiness throughout the story, not just at the end.

anon you have come to the right clown with this request, let me throw some stuff at you:

a painting missing strokes, a song missing notes by occasional_boy_reporter is a cql post-canon xiyao fix-it fic that includes probably my favourite brand of suyao, which is one-sided, unrequited, but nevertheless not something minshan makes jgy's problem to manage. he might be eaten up with envy on the inside, but his ride-or-die loyalty to jgy overcomes everything. anyway, i am sad to say the fic is incomplete, but it is still such a beautiful read, and sms's role in it really can't be overstated! i also really like how the writer handles lxc and sms's dynamic!

favor by venndaai is a hunger games AU which primarily focuses on a romance between meng yao and lan xichen in the games, but also features background nieyao and very minor background nielan--which, if you know anything about me and my preferences, is so high up there on my list of NOTPs as to be in the stratosphere, so for me to not only read and finish this fic, but turn around and recommend it to other people as often as i do.... idk if it says something, exactly, other than i think it's REALLY FUCKING GOOD! minshan's role in this one is very minor in contrast to what you'll see above, but it is nevertheless an extremely important role that, imo, closely mirrors sms and jgy's canon dynamic in spirit, if not in function. just be prepared for things to go very dark. i cried at the end.

sainted, untainted by gloriousmonsters is a suyao oneshot that veers very closely towards dubcon territory, though the kink in question is one that they do negotiate in advance. things just... happen... in the thick of it, and they struggle, but the whole scene from start to finish remains consensual. what i love about it isn't even the sex, though that is very steamy and intimate dgmw. it's that everything about this scene, from start to finish, is also an examination of trust and vulnerability, and i think if there's anyone in the canon material jgy would be willing to give up his dearly bought power and control to--other than lan xichen--it's going to be su she.

those are the ones that immediately leap out at me! beyond that, here's a shameless plug for my post-canon xiyao fix-it WIP glorious, which only has one chapter up atm, but it is all jgy and sms. their dynamic is going to be as important as the romantic xiyao in subsequent chapters so 👉👉 watch this space etc.

On a spring morning in April, Katsuki arrives at Aldera Junior High early to perform classroom duties, and stops in front of the bloodied corpse of Midoriya Izuku. - Unable to deal with the unbearable guilt of causing his childhood friend's death, Bakugou Katsuki finds a way to see him again.

Meanwhile, Aizawa Shouta deals with an unbearably high mortality rate with his students, even if he takes the right steps to try to stop them.

“IcyHot?” “I need—need help, I can’t, can’t—” Shouto breathes, tears staining his cheeks as he stumbles over to Bakugou, his muscles are weak, heavy—they aren’t working. His legs give out and— ”Easy, easy,” Bakugou stumbles back and keeps Shouto up with his steady arms, holds on to his waist tight. “I don't know what to do,” he hiccups, pressing his face into Bakugou’s shoulder as he sobs and tugs at his shirt, “what’s happening to me?”

Shouto gets hit with a quirk that prevents him from sleeping and reality as he knows it, crumbles before him.

Shen Qingqiu felt sick. There was something wrong in this dream.

“I ask you again. Do you regret it, Shizun?”

I do have some recs! I'm usually a bit more picky on LWJ's characterization than WWX's, so more of my fics are once where LWJ is standout, but I am sure some of them will delight.

First I would recommend glitteringmoonlight and Rynne for being incredibly consistent across many stories, both short and long.

As for individual fics, here are some of my favorites where WWX is super stand out.

A bunch of little prompts all celebrating Wei Wuxian in some way, so it's a glory of different points in his life.

Same goes here; he's a little more CQL than MDZS, but oh is he fantastic in these stories, brilliant and kind and funny.

Back on more MDZS styles, here he is post canon being fantastic and confusing the juniors.

Lan Wangji is cursed and Wei Wuxian takes care of him, definitely a more introspective look, but as we all know, LWJ can get in deeper than anyone else.

The Guests of Cloud Recesses

Wei Wuxian solves a little mystery in the Cloud Recesses, features him being fantastic both in the flirting and the guidao sides.

Incomplete, but lovely! Features both MDZS and CQL WWX and that rare balance of an author who can write both rather than an arrangement of the two.

Letterless

Foxxian and Dragonji, where it captures a lot more of that young-twenties level flirting that most authors seem to struggle with. Also has a smut scene near the end, but a lot of story around it.

And not to toot my own horn too much, but I would recommend checking out some of my own fics if you haven't already, over at Admiranda. Wei Wuxian is one of my favorite characters to write and I haven't had a single complaint yet!
