The Demise of the Worry Wart
A worry wart is someone who tends to spend way too much time on – well…worrying — having anxious thoughts about this and that. That’s most often not me! I don’t let myself go there. But, still, there are people issues, car issues, financial issues, and health issues that creep in our minds that trouble our souls. This little “issue” of mine sounds trivial. I had been to my dentist for my…

Psalm 42:5 Why Be Depressed?
Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance. Psalm 42:5 Depression is something that millions of people suffer with every day in America. There are thousands of reasons why people get depressed and often stay in a state of depression for days and even years. Doctors prescribe millions of dollars…

Do You Speak Truth to Your Soul?
By Adrian Rogers “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance.”  Psalm 42:5 Did you know there’s someone who’s always talking to you? There’s that old flesh, and it is constantly talking to you, and that’s where negative thinking comes from. That mindset is the one we inherited from Adam. That soul…

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭42:5-‬11‬ ‭(NLT‬‬). “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you— even from distant Mount Hermon, the source of the Jordan, from the land of Mount Mizar. I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and surging tides sweep over me. But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life. “O God my rock,” I cry, “why have you forgotten me? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies?” Their taunts break my bones. They scoff, “Where is this God of yours?”.Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!”
“Find Help in God’s Presence” By In Touch Ministries:
“Take your pain to the Lord—you can rely on Him.”
“Whenever you’re feeling down, the Psalms are an excellent source of comfort and encouragement. In today’s passage, the psalmist shares how God offers comfort to you, His child, in hard times. To receive it, you should …
Look within. Before you can deal with despair, you need to know what is causing it. If you’re not sure, ask the Lord to help you figure out what’s going on.
Look up. The next step is to lift your eyes to the Lord and place your hope in Him. Remember, discouragement comes to everybody at one time or another, but it should not be permanent.
Look back. Despair has a way of making you forget all the good things God has done over the years. Recalling His past care and provision helps to overpower discouragement.
Look ahead. Knowing that the Lord’s plans are good, you can look forward to what He is going to do in the future. His lovingkindness will support you by day and bring comfort by night.
To overcome discouragement, fixing your focus on the Lord is key. His Word promises that He walks with you through the valley. Remember, even if you feel disheartened, you are never alone.”

Where is thy God?
Where is thy God?
Psalm 42:3. “My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?” Have you ever felt that God was nowhere to be found? That you were surrounded by evil in every direction? You’re certainly not alone! I think, as Adam and Eve exited Eden in disgrace, that they wondered if God were still present in their lives. Satan certainly seemed to have won a…

Coincidence Disguised as History. History Connected by Coincidence
Coincidence Disguised as History. History Connected by Coincidence
Most casual observers might assess a seemingly random series of events and say, “Wow, That’s a Really Amazing Coincidence!” In fact, anyone looking at the birth of Jesus would have to admit there were some surprising coincidences that took place. I would submit that there is something more to it than that… You Can Look It Up… “In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should…

Why am I so sad?    Why am I so upset? I tell myself, "Wait for God's help!    You will again be able to praise him,    your God, the one who will save you." - Psalm 42:5
Sometimes sadness and being upset can creep up on us. We go about the daily affairs of life and these twin perturbations of the soul sneak up on us and bring us down emotionally without us fully realizing it. Finally, when the discomfort they cause dawns on us, we ask the questions of our verse for today. "Why am I so sad? Why am I so upset?" For people of faith, however, the questions we put to ourselves are not straightforward in nature, but rhetorical.
They are rhetorical because the answer is assumed and obvious. There is no reason for sadness and upset. As people of faith, we have a resource that can render unnecessary any need we feel to be sad and upset. We have God. God can help us with whatever it may be that has afforded sadness and being upset the opportunity to sneak up on us. If we wait for God's help, we will not wait in vain. After all, "God is our protection and source of strength. He is always ready to help us in times of trouble" (Psalm 46:1). God specializes in helping His people out of the troubled situations of life that trouble our souls.
If we wait on God, then we will place our trust in Him. We will believe that He can help us in our time of need and He will come through when the time is right. Waiting on God includes trusting that he knows when the time is right. If it were up to us, of course, there would be no waiting at all. For us, "now" is always the right time. God, however, has His own plans and His own purposes and people of faith are willing to wait on God. They are willing to wait because they believe in faith that God's timing is better than their own timing.
If we wait on God, then the time will come when we will once again praise Him for what He has done. Since God is the one who will save us, it is only appropriate that we acknowledge that fact by giving Him the praise and glory.

Every September, my friend Marc Hong, a professor at Louisville Seminary, hosts Psalmtember. He invites you to join in, too!
Think "Inktober," but in September and with a spiritual focus — and with any art form welcome, from drawing to poetry to photography and beyond. There's also no pressure to create something for every day — do as many or as few as you like.
Here's Marc's description of this artistic event:
Each year, I love to spend a month making art inspired by the Psalms. There are 30 days in September, meaning that I can evenly divide up the 150 Psalms into 5 sets of 30. So, if I do this for 5 years, I will have made art with all of the Psalms. Join me! The prompt list is in the image [as well as below the readmore]. But other words may stand out to you! Or you may try to make art that represents the wholeness of the Psalm. I encourage you to read the text of the whole Psalm each day, consider what emotions it stirs up in you, choose a medium that speaks to you, and make some art! Folks have painted, used ink, drawn with colored pencils, taken photographs, written haikus, and much more. Choose what stirs delight in you!
Tag your post with #psalmtember2023 so we can celebrate the Psalms through art together!
Marc and many others post on Facebook, but I'll be paying attention to the tag here on tumblr. If you create anything you'd like me to share on Facebook on your behalf, DM me.

These are epigraphs for chapters in a fantasy story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image ID under the cut.
Sorry about using a picture for original text. I did it because Tumblr’s line and paragraph spacing is fucking massive, and it would ruin the flow of the poetry, so I took screenshots of a Google doc. Here’s the ID.
[Image ID: Three screenshots of poetry in Times New Roman. The titles are bolded. There is a line break between each poem.
The first picture says,
The Book of Frenzy 2:10-12
“How many have died upon the Earth? God ought to be executed for letting them die.”
And the Sons of God answered, How many have died upon the Earth?
That is how many times God has been executed for letting them die.
Psalms 129:4-5
All murder is deicide
All murder is holy wrath
The Book of Frenzy 2:20-28
“If the Road circles back upon itself, how should I reach the end of it?”
The Sons of God answered, With eagerness and great haste.
“Then the Road must be nothing more than travel upon the Road.”
The Sons of God answered, No—the Road is the traveler.
“If I am the Road, then surely I do not need to travel at all—for a road does not walk upon itself.”
And the Sons of God answered, If no one walks upon it, then it is not truly a Road.
“What is the reward at the end of the Road?”
And the Sons of God answered, This is the reward:
At the end of the Road, God will hunt you for sport.
The second picture says,
Psalm 1/First Hymn to the Ravenous Lord
O my holy Mother, you are utterly beyond measure
But all things must be measured against you
O my holy Daughter, you have brought light to the horizon
And you will bring darkness unto the light
You are wholly without equal, and all things equal you
When you sowed the fields, you made the fields
Where you do not step, no one could ever step
You are unbounded because you are your own bounds
O my holy Neighbor, I sent a boy out to hunt
He brought back the sacred and glorious corpse of God
You delivered God into the hands of my son
You are an incomparable hunter: you perfect the art of catching
You are incomparable prey: you perfect the art of getting caught
Mantra 11
To commit suicide is to poach on God’s territory
Mantra 23
God is a cage and the key to the cage is God
The final picture says,
Psalm 42
O my holy Son, I sent a boy to go hunt in the forests
He dragged back a fat and bloodied boar
We skinned the beast and roasted it on the fire
With salt and garlic we roasted the beast
The boy and I drank sweet wine and together we ate the meat
The meat was the boy who I sent to go hunt in the forests
Mantra 51
Only God is so swift that she could capture God
Only God is so swift that she could be captured by God
Psalms 232:10-11
The boy said, “By catching God, I became him.
God turned me into God; that is how he escaped me.”

EMBRACING TRANSITION
"The Lord blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys."  - Job 42:12 NIV
From time to time we actually have to come out of one undertaking completely before God can transition us to the next assignment in our Christ calling.  Something that is closing in our lives can make us feel like we are out of control, going to shipwreck, or worse yet, never able to rebound.
Sometimes our calendars, schedules, and plans just don't line up with where God wants to take us anymore, so He decides to change our course.
"Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long."  - Psalm 25:5 NIV
God knows what you are about to walk through and He has already prepared for it. – everything you need to carry out His purpose for your life is already present – there is nothing missing and nothing broken. Don't be afraid to share how you really feel with Him. He wants to hear what you have to say about it. At first, it can feel breathtaking and even fearful, but God is there. He is in the heights, the depths, and the small steps of faith you are about to take.
STEPPING OUT OF THE BOAT
Some of the steps ahead will be like walking on water. Unfortunately, we don't get to pick the visibility of the water or the depth of the ocean that the Lord asks us to step out on.
"Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?"  - Psalm 139:7 NIV
Rest assured that God never closes a door unless He intends on opening something else for you. Remember, “all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
"Kings will be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers. They will bow down before you with their faces to the ground; they will lick the dust at your feet. Then you will know that I am the Lord; those who hope in Me will not be disappointed" (Isaiah 49:23 NIV).
