Oda-approved questions to help build your OC

If you head to the One Piece Wiki page of the Straw Hats and take a look at the Miscellaneous section, you'll find a lot of trivia questions about the Straw Hats that Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, has answered in the Q&A portion attached to some manga chapters, called an SBS. I like to call those answers "Straw Hat Fun Facts" and I love them, because they work really well if you want to flesh out your OC and give them a bit more life and depth.

So, even if you're not planning on making your OC a Straw Hat, these questions might still be helpful for you to think about.

The way I'm gonna structure this post for the sake of avoiding spoilers is I'm gonna list all current LA Straw Hats with their facts and all future confirmed Straw Hats will have their facts mentioned without their name, if it makes sense to mention them. That way you can avoid duplicates within the crew if you want to do that and still have no clue about who's gonna join. I'm also gonna comment on how the various fun facts apply to the live action adaptation wherever applicable.

If you're looking for people's birthdays, I'm gonna make another post about them, don't you worry. But you won't find them here.

Animal Resemblances

Luffy: Monkey

Zoro: Shark/Tiger

Nami: Cat

Usopp: Armadillo/Chameleon

Sanji: Duck/Bighorn Sheep

Others: Reindeer, Red Panda, Crane, Falcon, Bull, Rhinoceros, Horse, Giraffe, Whale Shark, Bear

I don't think any of them were mentioned or referenced just yet in the live action, aside from Luffy's name having the word Monkey in it, but that doesn't count. I'm pretty sure we'll get some hints in the future though since these just have such great potential for easter eggs.

Specific Numbers

Now, this is a category that's a bit more complicated because each Straw Hat has at least two signature numbers, for very different reasons. Everyone has a main number based on when they joined, with Luffy being number 1. The second number is the same but it skips Luffy, making Zoro number 1, but this version is rarely used, if ever at all. Then there's the possibility of a Straw Hat getting a number assigned to them based on a pun, whether that be based on their name, their devil fruit, or something entirely different. I'll explain pun numbers in a bracket.

Luffy: 01, 56 (go-mu)

Zoro: 02/01

Nami: 03/02, 73 (na-mi)

Usopp: 04/03

Sani: 05/04, 32 (san-ji), 59 (ko-kku = cook)

Others: 06/05 - 10/09, 110, 87, 26, 43

Now, you may ask: "Evie, I wanna have a pun number for my OC, how do they work?" I got you, buddy. You can make your own pun numbers using a technique called goroawase, using this handy chart I made based on a Wikipedia chart. Everything I added is in (brackets) and consists of variants that would technically be possible due to my own understanding of goroawase, but might not be commonly used.

On a very basic level, all you have to do to create your pun number is to grab the readings from this table and glue them together. I took some work off your shoulders by adding the phonetic changes you can use, indicated by the arrows. You can also only use the first syllable of a reading or add or remove an n at the end of readings that end in vowels or n's. As you can see whith Sanji's ko-kku, you can duplicate consonants, and you can also turn short vowels into long vowels (tsu -> tsū, for example), both for spelling reasons. If you need to transcribe a c, either use an s or a k (or whatever else fits), depending on the pronunciation.

Here are some examples with my OCs:

Cora: 96 (ko-ra) or 25510 (a-ka-i-to - would be very unusual due to its number of digits, but I think I'll use this as a plot device in a future fic!)

Luna: 67 (lu-na/ru-na)

Inari: 576 (i-na-ri) or 53 (ka-mi)

Create away!

Specific Colors

This was in the live action! And I think we'll definitely see something similar again later.

You can't really see it that well but here are Luffy, Nami and Zoro lit up in their respective colors - red, orange and green respectively! I tried to take a better screenshot but, alas, Netflix will not let me.

Luffy: red (aka)

Zoro: green (midori)

Nami: orange (orenjī)

Usopp: yellow (kiiro)

Sanji: blue (ao)

Others: pink (pinku), purple (murasaki), light blue (mizuiro), white (shiro), black (kuro), ochre (ōdoiro)

As you can see, we pretty much have the whole rainbow here, which makes picking a unique color for your OC pretty hard, BUT it's completely allowed to use different shades of the same color (see: blue vs light blue), which is why I listed the Japanese color names for you. I did some digging and it turns out that these are the names of some of Japan's traditional colors. Those traditional colors don’t always match up with what my impression of the character's color is, BUT I made this handy little graphic for you:

In case there are any animal-related characters around and for those of you who like describing smells in their fanfic (me too, me too), this might be very useful!

These are all of the Straw Hats' specific colors (top row) according to the overview of Japanese traditional colors I linked for you above, their color names underlined with my perception of what color Oda might actually have been referring to, in modern terms. As for the grey names beneath orange and pink, those are the traditional colors from the overview that I used to replace the romanized English colors, based on what the first translation that popped up was. The columns directly underneath are a selection of different shades of the same color, also with their names. It just goes to show that you have a huge variety of colors to choose from for your OC - Japan's traditional colors alone are about 1,000 different colors and you can definitely play with hex codes some more. So, go wild!

Specific Smells

Luffy: meat

Zoro: steel (and probably blood, let’s be honest)

Nami: mikan (tangerines, essentially) and money

Usopp: gunpowder

I'd say everyone smells of the sea at least a little bit, realistically speaking, since they are pirates.

Sanji: cigarettes and seafood (and I'm willing to bet he wears some type of cologne or aftershave or something)

Favourite Type of Island and Season

Luffy: summer but he also loves snow, basically everywhere with meat

Zoro: autumn on an autumn island

Nami: summer on a spring island

Usopp: summer on an autumn island

Favourite Food

Sanji: a spoilery gag, so get creative!

We either directly see some of these in the live action or can easily guess.

Luffy: any kind of meat

Zoro: white rice (specifically in the shape of onigiri aka rice balls), sea beast meat, any food that compliments sake (though he's also pretty fond of beer, at least in the live action)

Nami: mikans (tangerines) and most other fruits

Usopp: pike from an autumn island and other fish of the season

Sanji: spicy sea food pasta, food that compliments black tea

Others: not really relevant but maybe interesting; cotton candy, chocolate, sweet stuff in general, sandwiches, not-too-sweet cakes, food that compliments coffee, basically anything that you can find at McDonald's, curry, mozoku seaweed with vinegar and fruits

Basically, Sanji gets to juggle around a whole lot of different flavours and cultural influences - and he does it really well and finds a way to make everything special, by the way! He generally favors the ladies in his cooking though.

Least Favourite Food

Even Sanji can't make them like everything. Their reasons for not liking something are very different, so they probably still eat it, especially if it's used in something Sanji prepared because he's their cook

Luffy: Cherry pie

Zoro: Chocolate (yes, chocolate! Adds a lot more depth to the scene of him eating Rika's rice balls, doesn't it?) - it's too sweet

Nami: orangette (candied orange peels) - she prefers actual fruit

Usopp: mushrooms - he got sick once

Sanji: konjac (Japanese konjac gel is usually made by mixing flour from the konjac plant with seaweed; it pretty much tastes like nothing and is used mainly for its texture) - it's not nutritious

Others: anything spicy, chewing gum, marshmallows, lemons, parfait

As a Family

This is part of the reason why Oda said there would be no romances within the crew in canon - but this is fandom, he has no power here. Feel free to ignore any of these roles and substitute canon with your own

Luffy: fourth son

Zoro: first son

Nami: daughter

Usopp: third son

Sanji: second son

Others: another child, parents and grandparents

Real-world Nationalities

Now, this is interesting, because these played a part in how the Straw Hats were cast for the live action!

Luffy: Brazilian (Mexican in the live action)

Zoro: Japanese

Nami: Swedish (her actress is American, but she was kept as white)

Usopp: unspecified African (his actor is Jamaican-American, so it sort of checks out)

Sanji: French (Sanji's actor is very international, but he's not French - I do believe Sanji is still supposed to be at least part French in the live action though, at least he still has an affinity for the language and he may very well have grown up multilingual)

Others: Canadian, Russian, American, Austrian, Indian

Inner Brain

Basically: What are the five words their brain/subconscious circles around?

Luffy: meat, meat, meat, meat, pirate king

Zoro: sword, sword, strength, train, sleep

Nami: money, money, money, money, beauty

Usopp: warrior, lies, lies, run, run

Suited Flower

Sanji: You guessed it, it's a spoiler-y gag. But, to summarize, he thinks about cooking and women

These were actually answered by one of the voice actresses for the anime (except for Luffy and Zoro's alternates) but they're Oda-approved! I know fanfic writers love flower language, so rejoice!

Luffy: cosmos, sunflower

Zoro: thistle, wisteria

Nami: sunflower

Usopp: daisy

Sanji: delphinium

Others: tulip, casablanca, anemone, rose, peony

Blood Type

-> this is a topic for another post since it's more of a life fact than a fun fact, isn't it? Maybe, I'll put the blood types in with the birthdays and make a sort of Straw Hat info post?

How often do they bathe?

Bathe, not shower, I would assume. Zoro showers after training... right?

Luffy: once a week

Zoro: once a week

Nami: every day

Usopp: once every three days

Sanji: every day

Typical Hours of Sleep

The only reference to this we have in the live action is Zoro's habit of napping. An interesting thing to note is that the Straw Hats' sleep schedules largely coincide in just such a way that someone is always awake - except for during one hour. Maybe this really is a coincidence or maybe this is a habit they built while travelling together. They do still have night watches though, I believe. But that means there's usually always someone to keep the night watch company :)

Luffy: no set time, but usually sleeps around 5 hours

Zoro: 4am to 7am (3 hours) + naps

Nami: 11pm to 7am (8 hours)

Usopp: 1am to 8am (7 hours)

Sanji: 12am to 5am (5 hours)

In conclusion, more than half of the crew has no idea what a healthy sleep schedule is. This is a pattern that's gonna continue, by the way...

Suitable Careers

Basically what careers they would have if they weren't pirates. Their actual careers in-universe also don't count.

Luffy: firefighter

Zoro: police officer (I will not accept this slander)

Nami: childcare worker

Usopp: graphic designer

Sanji: beauty salon worker

Others: elementary school teacher, cabin attendant, pilot, detective, train station attendant

Cooking Specialities

What are they best at cooking? According to Usopp in the live action, none of the guys besides Sanji can even boil water, so I'm willing to assume Sanji may have taught them a little. A lot. Not Luffy though. He's still a disaster.

Luffy: raw meat on a plate

Zoro: sashimi - a dish consisting of variously cut raw fish and meat

Nami: roasted duck with mikan sauce

Usopp: fish and chips

Sanji: literally anything, but he prefers seafood

Who would win a 50m sprint?

Only the current Straw Hats count here.

Fifth: Nami

Fourth: Usopp (he's already fairly fast, mind you)

Third: Zoro, slowed down because he got lost (but I still don’t think he could beat the people ranked higher than him, I'm sorry, Oda)

Second: Luffy

First: Sanji

Alcohol Tolerance

Another very useful one for fanfics! Tolerance doesn't equal how much they like drinking, by the way. I'd be willing to bet that the Straw Hats' alcohol tolerances got toned down in the live action, or at least Zoro's, judging by him stating how he woke up under a table once. With his manga-level tolerance, he would have had to drink gallons worth of alcoholic beverages before that happened. Still, I think the ranking holds up.

Third: Sanji

Second: Nami

First: Zoro

And finally one last bit that doesn't really fit anywhere else:

Sanji is currently the most qualified to give the crew a haircut. This makes sense if you read about his alternative career choice earlier and due to him generally putting a lot of thought into appearances.

Another day of drowning oneself in work. Another day as an Investigator of Special Case. Another dull day in the life of Min Yoongi, but maybe today was about to be a day worth the extra effort he put into waking up, getting ready, walking down the same path to KCCG, and working.

As per usual, Yoongi turned on his PC and made his way to the small pantry at the corner of his room to brew himself a cup of coffee. He remembered how the very corner of his office was just an empty space, but you had proposed to Jungkook to establish a personal pantry at each investigator’s office.

Honestly, that might be the best proposition you had come up with because Yoongi himself wouldn’t want to cramp himself in a pantry that was not even as big as his office and not every floor has a pantry. The thought of interacting with another creature irked him.

Plus, KCCG was an edifice.

Yoongi walked back to his desk which he didn’t even bother to clean up. It was messy because it was scattered in its place. His desk was pretty much similar to yours: filled with paperwork even though neither the two of you were a bureau investigator.

Settling himself comfortably on his seat with a cup of freshly brewed coffee in his hand, his free hand reached for the computer mouse and dragged it until the cursor on the screen reached the destination, the mail.

First thing first before Yoongi started his work, he would always check his emails.

Once the screen loaded, his emails never failed to impress him. He received more than five hundred emails every day, but of course, to make his life much easier, KCCG included a priority function when sending emails within the organisation.

Hence, immediately he clicked on the ‘High Priority’ folder with the striking bold red exclamation mark.

“Addition to Q Squad.” the title read. That unconsciously made his brow lift.

From Chief Director of Division 1, Kim Namjoon. Of course, his soulmate.

Skipping all the formal opening and greeting, the email read as below:

Leader : Investigator of Special Class, Min Yoongi.

Existing Members : Associate Investigator of Special Class, Kim Seokjin, First Class Investigator(s), Lalisa, Kim Jisoo.

New Addition : Associate Investigator of Special Class, Jeon (Y/N) Kishou.

Yoongi scoffed boringly but a muscle was quick to twitch hence a smirk found its way to tug on the corner of his lips.

The clock had just hit 7:30 A.M. and the email had a carbon copy sent to one of his favourite soulmates. Yoongi leaned in his leather chair comfortably. Sipping his coffee with a little too much excitement in his veins.

The extra effort was worth it surely.

One,

Two,

Three.

The door was slammed open, and it was the very person he was expecting for.

Jimin.

“Oh, Jimin,” his eyes widened a bit, as he gasped as if not expecting his soulmate. “To what do I owe the pleasure of having you here first thing in the morning?”

“Appeal.” Jimin said coolly.

“Appeal what exactly?” Yoongi feigned cluelessness.

“You’ve read the email, Min Yoongi.” The fire behind Jimin’s eyes made the older excited. Jimin gave him a frosty look as he enunciated. “Appeal. For. Rejection.”

Yoongi frowned foolishly followed by a shrug. “I have no reason to reject (Y/N) to be in my team.” He has.

“Oh, you sure do,” Jimin started to saunter around the room. “Reason number one being you can’t even be anywhere with her presence for more than 30 minutes before you quickly find an excuse to leave. Two, you hate her, she hates you. Three, you guys avoid each other.”

Jimin strode towards Yoongi’s desk, hands on it. With his voice thick with mockery, he announced the last reason. “Lastly, you can’t handle her.”

Yoongi looked unimpressed.

Or at least he tried to look unimpressed.

Taking a sip of his coffee, he groaned when the rich flavour reached the back of his throat. He propped an arm on the desk and rested his chin on it.

Aloofly, he spoke. “One, 30 minutes is the time I allocated for every meeting except for our soulmates. Two, I have never verbally told anyone and her I hate her, nor have I ever heard her verbally announcing her hatred towards me to anyone or me. Three, we don’t. I just met her three days ago.”

Yoongi then propped his other arm on the table as well and connected his fingers. “Lastly, it’s you who can’t handle her.” With a mocking smile. “Or else why would she be handed over to someone else aka me, hmm?”

“Don’t blame others for your incompetency.” The smile was gone, and every trace of excitement vanished and was replaced with his cold, deadly stare.

“You don’t know anything, Yoongi.” Jimin narrowed his eyes at him. “Don’t run your mouth about something you have zero knowledge of.”

“That’s why I’m saying things only I, and I only, have knowledge of.”

“You’re infuriating.” He groaned.

“I know that.” Yoongi acknowledged with a shrug. He raised from his seat and made his way, again, to the pantry to make himself another cup of coffee. With a very dismissive tone, he told Jimin. “Now, will you excuse yourself? I need to welcome my new team member.”

“Fuck you.” Jimin chided.

Yoongi was quick to retort. “I’d rather fuck your arse.”

“You–”

The door was pushed open. Jimin’s remark was cut off. His face was heating up and Yoongi resumed making his coffee without care.

The second person Yoongi has been expecting.

“Good…” Your greeting was stuck on the tip of your tongue when you saw Jimin in your new mentor’s office. He looked like he didn’t expect you to be here too. But what could be done? Namjoon sent you an email this morning informing your new placement in another squad. Specifically speaking, Yoongi’s squad: Q Squad.

“Good morning, (Y/N).” Yoongi greeted you which was, by the way, extremely out of character. He even looked your way.

You immediately bowed and redo your greeting. “Good morning, Investigator Min.”

Your new mentor then raised his eyebrow at your former mentor. “Well, Jimin, what are you waiting for? This is your cue to leave.”

Jimin’s right eye twitched uncontrollably but a smirk found its way to his plump lips. With a controlled voice, he managed out a “As you wish, Min.” and spread the paperwork on Yoongi’s desk into an even messier mess which the older stared at in horror.

Petty and childish…

As he passed by you, you expressed your valediction with a bow. “Have a good day, Investigator Pa–”

Jimin grabbed you by the forearm and dragged you out with him.

Before getting dragged out of the office completely, you saw your mentor’s horrified expression was replaced with his casual smirk.

Why does he have to be so unreadable?

“Investigator Park–!” You tried to pull back your arms. Although you knew it was a futile effort, it didn’t hurt to try.

Jimin halted, resulting you to bump into his hard chest instead of his back as he had spun very quickly. His hands snaked around your waist, holding you close to him. Realising your face and his face might be in close proximity, you tried to at least pull back your head to create some distance.

“Say my name.”

You frowned and accidentally met his eyes. Quickly turning away to break the eye contact, you tried to wiggle your way out of his arms. “What–”

His hand found its way to your neck, putting on light pressure. You knew he hated it when you avoid eye contact. He and Jungkook were like that. Face hard with a low voice and hint of annoyance, Jimin repeated. “Say. My. Name.”

Your eyes flickered at his voice, but your mouth was quick to comply. “J–Jimin…”

“Good girl.” His thumb found its way to your lips. He smudged your lipstick and dragged it a little out of place. Your hands were frozen. Jimin then brought his thumb and smudge the lipstick stain on his own lips. “Now, let’s meet Namjoon to switch you back into my team.”

“Switch who back into your team?” Namjoon

Eyes widening, you pushed Jimin away to get out of this compromising position. “Director Kim, Jeon.” You immediately bowed and greeted them.

“I want (Y/N) back in my team again.” Jimin declared with all seriousness.

“No.” Director Kim declined curtly.

That seemed to twitch a muscle in Jimin’s jaw, but he kept his cool and continued. “And why is that?”

“Hmm, let’s see,” Namjoon feigned pondering. “Experimenting?”

“Stop this crap and switch her back into my team, Namjoon.”

“Is that an order, Jimin?” He glared down at the younger. His voice was deep with authority. “Do I take order from you?”

“Hyung.” Jungkook’s voice finally joined the conversation. He was referring to Namjoon.

The higher Director didn’t need to turn around to catch what Jungkook was intending to say. “I have a reason for this sudden change. It was not done for fun. It was done with careful observation and procedure.”

“Pray tell me the reason.”

“Your latest training session with the Associate Investigator of Special Class, (Y/N).”

Your body went rigid.

“What’s wrong with it?”

“I received complaints from Investigator Mingyu, Special Class, and Investigator Xu Minghao, First Class, that stated the same thing in which you had disturbed their scheduled training session with (Y/N),” he let out a heavy sigh before adding, “I know Jungkook was involved as well. Temporary restraining order has been put on him by me to refrain him from engaging with (Y/N) in any activity unless in public view.”

He continued. “You, however, were not given any restraining order because Jungkook insisted on taking the full blame, but I would hate it to let an accomplice get away freely,” Namjoon turned his gaze towards you. “That’s why I decided to remove (Y/N) from your team.”

He returned his gaze to Jimin. He could see the younger was burning with anger, it was detectable although Jimin was as great as Jungkook in using the art of concealment. They were soulmates, after all.

“Fret not,” Namjoon reassured. “You can do an appeal to request (Y/N) back into your team when Min Yoongi fucked up.”

Jimin was powerless in this situation. He knew. No matter how shit arsehole Min Yoongi was, he was not one to fuck up anything. Q Squad is the leading counter-ghoul squad in KCCG. Min Yoongi was known for his excellent skills individually and collectively. Each week, his team report was always the most impressive followed by Jimin’s team.

“Investigator (Y/N), you may return back to Yoongi’s quarter and proceed with your first team mission in your new team.” Namjoon dismissed you with a smile. His dimple poked through his cheeks. Your heart fluttered against your will. “I expect a good result by the end of the week.”

“Yes, I won’t disappoint you, Director Kim.” Bowing your way out, you walked back to Yoongi’s office. Along the way, you fought the strong urge to turn around because you felt the stares. For one, you knew it has to be Jimin’s.

Knocking on the door, you called out his name before coming in, headfirst. “Investigator Min?”

He has already started with his pile of paperwork. The room reeked of coffee from the amount of coffee he had consumed, and it was just 2 hours into the day. You stepped into the room and walked towards his desk.

“Oh, (Y/N),” Yoongi finally looked up from his paperwork and at you, but confusion was quick to wear itself on his face.

Shamelessly, he asked. “You just finished making up with Jimin?”

“Wha– No!” A blush crept up to your cheeks as you realised why he asked that.

Jimin smudged your lips a little while ago.

Flustered, you quickly looked for the handkerchief in your coat. You remembered you had placed it inside one of the pockets this morning. Excusing yourself as you continued rummaging in your coat for the piece of fabric.

When you finally felt the soft fabric of your handkerchief on your fingertips, before you could even grab it out of your pocket, a piece of soft cloth reached over to your lips, wiping off your lipstick.

“Took you so long to even find a handkerchief,” Yoongi said aloofly.

“I–I apologise,” your eyes looked at anything but his pale face.

Min Yoongi was a beautiful man. His porcelain skin was soft, his eyes dark almost to the colour of black, and his dark raven hair that looked soft and fluffy. He was like a doll.

A killer doll.

When encountering the ghouls, Yoongi was nothing per the delicate description, especially with all the blood on his hands and some that splattered on his face.

His duality was insane.

“Give me your hand.” Yoongi called on you.

A look of confusion was clear on your face, but he ignored it as he showed his palm, signalling you to put your hand on his. You obliged without any question.

Yoongi took out something from his pocket and in a blink of an eye, blood was drawn from one of your fingers. The pain finally registered in your brain as you shrieked and tried to pull back your hand.

He wasn’t letting you.

The pain was not very intense but maybe it would leave a deep wound cut. Instead of putting pressure or even bothering to be concerned, Yoongi brought your bloody finger to your lips. He dabbed your blood from your finger to your lips.

“That’s more natural, isn’t it?” Sadism shone in his eyes.

You were unable to do anything.

Yet again.

As if you were under a spell, you were frozen against your will.

Once Yoongi finished his little game, he released your hand carelessly. The handkerchief in your pocket was immediately retrieved and you put it over your bloody finger along with some pressure to stop further spill of blood.

Only now you realised he had cut your finger with his folding knife.

A: Oh, this bag? [Shows her bag and then opens it, pulling out several items] My wallet, phone and many cute trinkets. A booklet with photocards and a metallic pen, for when I meet my biases so they can sign the pc. Oh, and my customized Lightiny.

Q: Customized? Is there a story to it?

A: Well, it's no secret that I always get lost, no matter where I am. [Laughs, everyone knows that fact about her] So, the boys came up with this idea. One, there's a tracker in my phone and my lightstick. Second, when I press this button on the Lightiny, [she presses the button and the lightstick lights up in her microphone colors] it turns into my own little beacon, which I just have to hold up high, so my members see me much easier. I often have to climb onto a chair or table though, because I rarely stick out amongst people in a crowd.

Q: your fans are very curious if you have a crush on someone of your male friends. Do you?

A: I do have a crush, yes.

Q: Will you tell us who?

A: Absolutely - not. I love our fans, but that's something not even my best friends know.

Q: Do you ever regret joining Ateez?

A: There are some days on which I honestly think about leaving for the sake of the boys’ success, especially when I see certain comments on social media. But I have never regretted joining them. They are like family to me. I miss my parents and my life as a non-ido, but the boys are always there for me, to support me and they take care of me like siblings and I'm eternally thankful for that.

Q: Well, that's how the maknae should be treated, isn't it?

I've finally finished them lmao.

Here they are! As promised, I'll give a little context regarding both of them.

For context, these two are One Piece OCs. Zeus is my OC, Isuka is my girlfriend's.

Zeus, born with a rare genetic disorder, user of the Itai-Itai No Mi, he mostly uses his fruit to dull out the pain, which leads to him overextending himself. Born in Wano, at 17 he escaped with his childhood friend, Isuka, and other people during the Fire Festival. His experiences shaped his beliefs, and now he's determined to make the world a better, more humane place.

Isuka's not the best at fighting, but she always carries rusty knives with her, since she can control tetanus. She's also constantly running a fever, so she gets incredibly cold.

Isuka's fruit is different from Doctor Q's fruit in the sense that she can control symptoms of a disease that's already in the system of the enemy. If she manages to contaminate the enemy, then she manages to control the symptoms of the disease she contaminated the enemy with. It's more of a symptom fruit than a disease fruit per se.

Zeus deals with most of the fighting, though he isn't that good at it either. He likes to keep his distance, lacing his arrows with chemical weapons such as urticants in hopes to deter the enemy. When things get serious, he recurs to his devil fruit, which allows him to redirect his own pain to a designated target. Thus, he can control his own pain levels and transfer pain between himself and others. Not the most pleasant, but it works.

His fruit is not yet awakened, In its awakened state, the Itai-Itai No Mi could gain the ability to manipulate pain on a broader scale, extending beyond physical sensations to include emotional and psychological aspects. This would allow him to influence the mental states and perceptions of others, but also to affect everyone's sensitivity to pain without limitation.

However, Isuka is a much better devil fruit user, mostly because Zeus isn't patient at all, and sees his devil fruit powers more as an analgesic than a weapon.

They're both doctors.

Some people mistake them as zombies.

Zeus is covered in scars, mainly because when using his devil fruit in battle he has to either self-inflict pain or purposefully receive attacks. How he isn't dead is beyond everyone. Probably because neither of them get into too much trouble. Some scars are there because, since most of the time he dulls his pain so much he can't feel ANY pain in the first place, he's at incredible risk for injury.

We want to relate them to the Kid Pirates in some way, but we'll have to develop their stories a bit more first. I'll update anything through this post anyways, lmao.

i did a cute little couples photoshoot for them 🥺 i imagined they came into the “studio” and sat down and answered the questions together, like an interview. i made dani do more of the talking bc i rarely feature them in my posts.

Q: Where did you meet?

Dani: We met in college. It was the first day of English 100, a prerequisite class we all had to take. I was sitting alone at the back of the lecture hall because I didn’t know anyone, and I was too shy to talk to other people. This tall guy walked in and came all the way to the back row and sat down, a few seats away from me. I remember feeling so relieved I wasn’t going to be sitting alone anymore, and so terrified because he was really, really hot.

Amir: I went to the back because I didn’t want to talk to anyone. I remember being disappointed you had already taken a spot there, and worse, you were so cute, I knew it was going to be impossible to ignore you.

Dani: Eventually, we started talking.

Amir: It took me a few days to work up the courage to talk to her.

Dani: I can’t believe we spent that first week sitting next to each other, acting like the other person didn’t exist.

Amir: I was trying not to look at you because your beauty was too distracting.

Dani: I was so annoyed that you were sitting in the same row as me, instead of somewhere else, because I couldn’t check you out without turning my entire head, and it would’ve been so obvious.

Amir: Here’s a secret. I came to class late every day so I could look at you on my way to the back of the room.

Dani: He’d come to class late and then ask me what he had missed. That was always his excuse to sit next to me and talk to me.

Amir: Classic move. It worked like a charm.

Dani: I really didn’t think he would’ve noticed me. I looked a little different back then. I never wore makeup, I never wore nice clothes. I was... in a weird time in my life.

Amir: You looked beautiful then, and you look beautiful now.

Q: What do you love best about each other?

Dani: Good question.

Amir: You start.

Dani: I already went first for the last one! Okay, fine. Here it goes.

Dani: I love how patient you are with me. I love how you’re always there for me when I need you. I love how you’ll stay on the phone with me for hours, and you remember all the random little things I’ve ever told you. You care about me and you show it through your actions. I know I can always count on you. You have such a big heart, even though you don’t like to show it. That’s what I love the most about you: how you love so deeply.

Dani: Your turn.

Amir: I love how you accept me for who I am. I love how I can talk to you about anything. You don’t judge me. You don’t tell me what I should do, or who I should be; you just listen. I can be vulnerable with you. You make me feel like I matter, like I’m worth something. You make me want to be a better person.

Amir: I don’t know. I’m not good with words.

Dani: You’re amazing. There’s no one else quite like you.

Amir: You’re the most important thing to me. Don’t cry, my angel.

Dani: I’m crying because you’re crying!

got tagged by @kimium in a music tag game here (thank you, kim!) and i figured i may as well get this post written before the next twst update drops tomorrow and permanently alters my brain chemistry q-q

i freaking love music with all my heart and soul so uhh— time to tangent! under the cut. this got long. just scroll past if you didn’t follow me for this shit ahfndhgdgf

1. bathroom community by glass beach (pinkshift cover)

i stumbled upon this song earlier this year thanks to spotify (yes, i actually look at what they recommend! i need more songs!) and god. GOD. this song has held me in a choke hold since i first listened to it. i desperately want to create an oc from this song, or a story of some sort; the story it paints with its lyrics just has so much goddamn potential for a character.

i love singing this song, even if i can’t sing very well. it’s just a lot of fun, with how intense it is! plus the lyrics... god, the lyrics. i usually like to gravitate to songs with more vague lyrics, but something about this song really soothes that teenage version of me tucked away somewhere in my soul, still angsting about the world.

i think my favourite line is this one, in the second verse — “he said you’ll never be okay if you don’t come to your senses / with you, everything’s the end of the world.” though “flipping through a spiral notebook for some / sad, hopeless words to turn into a liturgy” slaps hard too.

2. everybody’s falling in love by *repeat repeat

oh, i have a fic idea i long to write with this one. actually, i have an oc story (which is its own thing i won’t talk about) based on this song, but i have a fic idea i want to write too. this song just evokes so much whimsy of people falling in love, a constant spiral of romance! and it brings to mind a soulmate au — except instead of soulmate marks already existing and being common knowledge, they just... suddenly appear. which leads to a spiral of people figuring it out, relationship drama — what if two people who were dating aren’t soulmates? people who were platonic who suddenly get marks for each other? who gets together? who doesn’t? i’unno, i’m like... relationship introspection extraordinaire. might be a silly idea now that i’ve typed it out, but it’d be fun.

ah— for the song itself... yeah, it’s light on the lyrics, but like i said, it’s whimsical! it’s fun! i love the announcement at the start to really set the scene — this is a stage, and people falling in love is the show for everyone’s entertainment. yeah, it’s just— it’s a fun song. i don’t have much else to say.

3. sex sells by lovejoy

oh... (longing sigh) this song.

i listen to it a lot whenever i’m in a depressed funk. it just resonates with me a lot; the lyrics remind me of being second place to someone else, of a relationship slipping, that kind of thing. actually, the fact that i haven’t listened to it as much lately is probably a sign of my improving mental health (HA!)

i conceived a fic au before based off this song before — for a different fandom, not twst. it’s kind of shelved, i might turn it into an oc story instead because i still like the concept. but the inspiration i drew from this song turned into a very complex introspection of a close relationship (think childhood friends to lovers) crumbling and shattering under jealousy, envy, et cetera, et cetera. wrote like, one short ficlet off that? never posted it, but i’m still happy with it.

ah... lyrics. yeah, this one’s obvious; my favourite line is “how’s it feel to be so loved yet so alone?”

4. poplar st. by glass animals

was struggling between a lot of songs (how do you expect me to pick just FIVE?!) but considering how a line from poplar st. is literally my blog title on my main... figured it was a no brainer to include it. i wish i could convey my thoughts and feelings on this song, but this is one of the very rare few songs where, if you asked me to tell you what i like about it, i’d be stumped.

i’m not good with identifying instruments or explaining any of that, but the almost dreamy atmosphere of poplar st. hooks me splendidly. the vocals fit beautifully, to the point where they blend with the music and almost seem hard to pick out. i like how the song seems to tinge with darkness and fragment as it goes on — both lyrically and musically. it just scratches a lot of itches for me. would love to try writing something based off it someday? might just be oc stuff though, given the lyrics.

lyrics... the whole chorus slaps. it’s so lovely. all the lines about flowers, and then “i am a true romantic / free falling love addict” just tops it off beautifully <3

5. schoolin’ by everything everything

ah... hahaha.

not to sound cringe on main but if i had to ascribe a song to myself, it would be this one. my friends know — oh, they know — just how much schoolin’ resonates with me. if i divulged all my thoughts here, this post would turn into a criminally long essay, so i’ll exercise restraint for now.

like, i genuinely think this song permanently altered my brain chemistry. so much of it just resonate with me — the scathing observations, the metaphors slamming society, the absolute raging emotions in the voice of the singer, the resentment brimming just underneath. it’s a song about mistakes, it’s a song about learning from them or not, it’s a song about conformity and education and straying or conforming to it. it’s a song about questioning the world and ripping apart the people who are too scared to do so. it’s a wickedly poetic song once you rip apart and dissect every little bit of the lyrics, and i fucking love it with all my heart and soul.

too many lyrics in this song. and yet i have always known my favourite lines. “so learn me anything good / and teach me something that works.” there’s something about that that clicks with me so deeply. a single, scathing request: let me learn anything useful at all, and teach me something that can work for me.

also shoutout to the entire coda (outro) of the song for being the best 1m 50s of my life.

Her name is Maeve di Angelucci, the sole princess of the Italian monarchy in my little universe ^q^ She's (un)happily married to her yandere hubby, Noël von Weissmann ♡

To sum it up, he's an angel (as a race, rather than a 'divine religious being') and told the King and Queen of a false prophecy that their daughter would be taken away on her 18th birthday and killed so they raised her in total captivity from the outside world. while he made his schemings to steal the German crown prince's identity and plan to get married to her since her hand would be offered much earlier (ye olden times, at 14) so they could avoid the prophecy. but he's the menace here! and he killed all the other candidates. oopsie

Before continuing with the next Red Matador group, I'd like to post this specific headcanon with Querardo. Back before the whole wiki edits happened, I had a little theory of his name's origin (Given "Queraldo" does not actually exist in Spain), buuut the whole thing was proven false by the whole "Gerardo García León" thing. Nonetheless there's still things that have to be answered in-universe, such as... Why Querardo?

So, here's some little backstory regarding the spanish captain and his name. Mind you, includes OCs/fabricated family members.

Our story all starts with León Naval, a famous spanish matador, who participated in bullfights all across the country. But although he was born in Seville, he settled in Navarre after finding the love of his life: Victòria. By marrying her, he was also given partial ownership of her family's bull farm. Something the only girl of the family wasn't allowed to inherit...

During their honeymoon, his wife offered him to visit a place important to her own family; the Queralt Sanctuary, located within Berga, Catalonia. Despite its remote location and few fame, the man was amazed by it and the saint it hosted. The fascination had been so big, that when Victòria became pregnant, León insisted to use the name Queralt for their child. There was a catch though, and this name was only used for girls. So when their child turned out to be a boy instead (Unlike what prior ultrasound scans had proposed)... Both felt cornered.

...Maybe not on León's side. As a plan B, the name "Gerardo" had been resonatining within his mind for a while, given it belonged to his biggest inspiration in the bullfighting world. Orginally they wanted to just go with it, but then the matador went even further: He decided to combine both Queralt and Gerardo, as to form a name that was related to what he and his wife found important.

And yeah, that's how Querardo's name came to be.

To this day, he's quite... Neutral with it. Sure, its cool that's quite unique, but... That's a double edged sword. Everytime he shares it with someone new, most likely it ends with that person being confused by how rare it is. At least they are quick to get used to it.

Though, the worst part of having Querardo as a name are the jokes. And no jokes are the worst like the ones coming from Igor and Pedro.

Igor: ¡Oyeeeeee! ¡Capitán! ("Heeeeey! Captain!")

Queraldo: ¿Qué? ("What?")

Pedro: ¡¡¡¡....RARDO!!!!

...Besides, going back to his family -and regarding Querardo's childhood dream of becoming a matador-... The moment León realized there seemed to not exist a (spanish) bullfighter with Q as a starting letter, the moment he got way too board with his kid's idea. He just wanted to create history, plain and simple. Little Que didn't mind this at first, but as he grew and his worldview started to shift... Conflicts started to grow within.

Some little notes:

Yes, I encountered the name "Queralt" as I was searching for possible clues of where Queraldo could have come from. I think its similarities with the spanish captain's name is just a coincidence (Specially given with how rare it is), though I do believe its interesting to point out nonetheless.

It's writing in japanese is 「ケラルト」(Keraruto), so that also adds up.

Important note: Queralt is a spanish name in usage, BUT it does not belong in its language. It is a catalan name, whose meaning is "tall stone". And Que is earth affinity, hmmmm....

...Honestly though, I enjoy the concept of Querardo having some sort of catalonian influence on name/family, overall. Quite interesting to mention, but this is one of the few autonomous communities that has banned bullfighting. Unfortunately things aren't perfect (as some other controversial traditions persist) but still, sweet irony...

If I make another encounter or change Que's backstory, I will of course notify it here.

Also yes, in the dub universe León just went "LET'S CALL HIM JUST LIKE MY WIFE!!!! Because I love her!!!" Is this worse or better than having a made-up name? You decide.

Questions!!!! I love a good set of questions. Under the cut, because I rambled a bit.

F. Fanfiction - What got you into fanfiction?

Well, when I was rather small, I had a dream. A dream that Micky Mouse met my first ever original character, which sprang from that dream, itself. The idea so interested me, that I continued to think up scenarios where this very person would meet a whole host of different characters, and that's basically where my love of inserts started.

As for the reading and writing, itself, I wrote my first when I was around nine. It was a story that was literally a rip off the of the movie The Haunting, but featured other things from other media, such as that strange AI girl from the first Resident Evil. Thus, I wrote my first fan-fiction, and it happened to be a crossover. And this was before I ever found others to read for myself. That started due to my love for Inu-Yasha, which I sourced from Quizilla (rest in pieces, you old dog).

O: Outline - Do you outline your fics or fly by the seat of your pants?

Mostly....by....my pants? I typically start off with a scene in my head, mostly made up of dialogue, until I can suss out exactly where I'm going with it. Then I get it down digitally. Not all of it makes the cut, as I often don't have notes on me for paper, but if I have something in mind I hold onto it fast and don't let go until it's down....even if this means forcing myself to ignore any other bunnies bopping around in my head. Outline wise...I don't. I have tried writing out plot points I want to hit, but genuinely after the first time I get them down, I never refer to it again, and just write, write, write. Almost always, and completely in order from chapter one, to chapter whenever-I-burn-out or finish the story.

But if I were to try to outline the way I write it would be: 1. think of random scene ft. the oc and a canon cast member, 2. flesh out said insert a bit, make them a little interesting with a character biography (I have suffered, dearly, from basically not knowing my OC well enough before starting proper), 3. write the first scene, the second, the third, on and on, until I'm done. I might draft out a few tiny possible moments for fun, but mostly those are exercises that are also never referred to again.

Q. Quirks - Do you have any quirks as a writer?

Quirks...maybe that I can rarely ever write with someone else in the room. I'm distracted very easily by everything. Fridge noises, dogs barking, throat clearing, vaping,...and I have a short temper in this regard when it comes to both writing, and reading. Generally though I have not snapped at anyone in some time for interrupting me (and this was always more of...a terrible stare I always regret after), I find it best to write in a quiet place, mostly in my room, with the door shut, and the proper music encouraging me. If I have to, I put on my noise cancelling earphones, but...literally everything in regards to noise distracts me, and yet the same could be said for when I'm trying to watch movies, too (which makes watching them and really enjoying them with others, completely, sometimes so very difficult...) I think it's the autism. Or the ADHD. Or something.

Oh, and the dark never bothers me. But that's something I always have going on. I'm just the person you'll walk in on, curled up reading on the couch in the pitch, only the light of my phone to give some sign of me being there...if that. Right now, I am writing, and only my laptop is providing a light source.

it's sunne posting hour it seems. but i want everyone to know how ridiculous it is how i started my hoard of sunny art

so i used to play on this browser pokemon collectibles site called pokefarm q right. pretty cool. it sure is a game! i got bored of it after a while though. but basically. i spent years on this website. i did so much. i made so much progress

fundamental to understanding this progress though is that there are a couple different varieties of rare pokemon on pfq. the first is obviously shinies, like in the real games. the second however is albino pokemon: obtained in the same way, but distinctly rarer. the third is melanistic pokemon, whch occur when a pokemon is shiny and albino at the same time, as in the odds hit twice, so shiny rates * albino rates. lastly, legendary pokemon are obtained with summon items, some of which are a lot rarer than others. summon items can cost anywhere from like 15 to 200+ ZC (premium currency purchasable at about 1 to 1 cent ratio iirc)

i got really good at this game. some of my accomplishments

- first ever melanistic morelull - melanistic litleo/pyroar - melan hunted rayquaza (never got one, but i did get several shinies and albinos, which are ABSORDLY VALUABLE, because jade orbs were one of the most expensive summons in the economy at my time of playing) - probably a bunch more i forgot about. i know i melan hunted helioptile but i don't think i ever got one?

anyways. so i was fucking stacked, right. i was free to play, but i had several extremely expensive items and pokemon from years of grinding tf away at what i wanted.

eventually, i get bored. i get bored when games have no story. so i decide, hey, if i sell off everything i have that i won't use anymore, i can just. buy a lot of art.

so i did! i sold off most of my extremely valuable pokemon to collectors. most of my hoarded rare items too. i make several thousand ZC, totaling i think several hundred dollars equivalent iirc!

and thats how i got so much good art of sunny. i didn't spend a DIME on that website, but eventually amassed so much stuff to liquidate for premium currency that i bought almost 20 different art comms of my stupid little typhlosion fusion oc. im a fucking legend

Patterns in Given Names in the World of Avatar

Or, Naming Your Avatar OC’s: Beyond Baby Name Lists

Naming an original character in any fantasy setting can be a tricky business. Do you use a real name? Do you make one up? Either way, it has to sound like it fits into the established world - but you don’t want it to sound too similar to the names of canon characters, either. In this post, I will offer an analysis of canon names of major and minor characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, looking for discernible patterns in the names of each of the fictional cultures of that world, and offer some suggestions based on my own experience for how to choose or create names for original characters in that world.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with using a “baby name list” for inspiration or even taking a real name from one of the cultures the show is based on and using it. But since the fictional cultures of the show are not complete carbon copies of real cultures, just picking a name from a list of Inuit or Japanese names won’t always give you one that actually fits in with the Avatar world. And maybe you’ve seen enough Water Tribe OC’s named Nanook (I’m guilty of this one myself) and want to get a little more creative. In that case, welcome to the advanced OC naming class.

And yes, there will be color coded spreadsheets.

Methods and Goals

To get a feel for what sort of names will sound like they fit into the world of Avatar, we of course have to look at the names of canon characters. For our purposes, I chose to exclude characters who only appear in spin-off material such as the comics or Kyoshi novels, and only look at the given names of characters from the two shows, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. I have sorted the characters by nation, as well as into cultural subdivisions where applicable. LoK characters from the United Republic of Nations have their own category, since in most cases we do not technically know the specific cultural origin of those characters’ names - though based on the patterns below and other context clues, we can make a reasonable guess for many of them. Characters whose names appear to be nicknames or pseudonyms (such as Longshot and Lightning Bolt Zolt) have also been left out.

The aim of this analysis is to look for phonetic and other patterns in the names of each cultural group within the world of Avatar. We will be looking at the names as spelled using the Latin alphabet, since this is how most fan fiction is written, and how the character names are given in official material, but keep in mind that within the world of the show, all nations use the Han Chinese writing system, so names or syllables spelled differently in the Latin alphabet might be represented by the same character in-universe, or vice versa.

Finally, my guidelines and suggestions for how to choose or create OC names are just that: guidelines and suggestions. These are not rules. It’s your OC, you do what you want.

Without further ado, let’s start looking at some names.

The Water Tribes.

We don’t have quite the sample size for Water Tribe characters that we’ll see for some of the other nations, but 28 names is still plenty to look at. Notably, we have far more male (18) than female (10) names, a pattern we will see repeated without exception. Draw your own conclusions.

Water Tribe names appear to mostly be two or three syllables long, with most of the one syllable names being from the Foggy Swamp Tribe. Hahn from the Northern Water Tribe is the only other one syllable name. Two syllable names are the most common with 19 names, which is about two-thirds of the total. Three syllable names account for 5 out of the total 28, or less than one fifth - still, this makes them more common than names of the same length in any other nation, and more common than one syllable names in the Water Tribes, especially if you exclude the Foggy Swamp. If you’re looking to use an authentic Inuit or other Arctic indigenous name for your Water Tribe OC, I would be wary of names longer than three syllables, though, as we have none of these in canon.

Consistent with Inuit names, we do have a lot of /k/ and /g/ sounds. The letters K and Q are pronounced the same in Water Tribe names, though in Inuit they represent different sounds. 18 out of the 28 names have at least one of these sounds, with /k/ being far more common than /g/ (17 vs. 2 names). Of course, having the letter K in your Water Tribe OC’s name is by no means necessary, and especially if you are creating a lot of Water Tribe characters, you probably want some variation.

The digraphic consonant sounds /ch/, /sh/, and /th/ are almost totally absent, with the exception of one name from the Foggy Swamp, Tho. The /r/ sound is also never found at the beginning of a name, and the /j/, /l/, /w/, and /f/ sounds are totally absent. The /v/ sound is absent from all given names, but notably appears in the surname Varrick not included above.

Regarding gender differences, both male and female names can end in -a, but this is much more common for female names, with 3 male names compared to 8 female names having this ending. Notably, this accounts for all but two of the female names, and all of the female names end in a vowel. Consonant endings appear to be exclusively masculine, with final /k/ sounds being common, whether spelled with K or Q (8 out of 18 male names), though masculine names can also end in vowel sounds.

There do not appear to be major differences between the Northern and Southern Water Tribe names, however the three names we have from the Foggy Swamp Tribe are definitely distinct - all one syllable, and all open syllables ending in vowels. These sound more like Earth Kingdom names, as we’ll see, which makes sense given the location of the Foggy Swamp.

To my knowledge, only handful of the Water Tribe names are authentic Inuit names, and they are all characters from LoK: Desna, Yakone, Noatak, Unalaq, and Tonraq, or 5 out of the 28 total names. Yue is an authentic name, but a Chinese one. The main Water Tribe characters such as Katara, Sokka, and Korra all have invented names. So yes, you can pick from an Inuit baby names list (and Nanook does fit the patterns we see above), but you are by no means limited to this.

The Earth Kingdom

Since the Earth Kingdom is the largest of the nations, it makes sense that we have the most names to look at here, with 79 names total, including 56 male names and 23 female names. I’ve included Jet with a question mark, because he may be using a pseudonym like the rest of the Freedom Fighters do, but his name is also plausible as the one his parents gave him. Macmu-Ling, the name of the haiku master in Ba Sing Se, may also be a surname, but this is unclear given the limited information on the character.

One syllable names are much more common in the Earth Kingdom, accounting for 30 out of 56 male names and 10 out of 23 female names. This is roughly half of all Earth Kingdom names, or 40 out of 79. Two syllable names account for 34 out of the 79, or about 43%, with three syllable names being rare overall, just 5 names or 6%. Overall, Earth Kingdom names tend to be shorter, which is consistent with a basis in Chinese, Korean, or Vietnamese names.

Unlike with Water Tribe names, there do not appear to be specific sounds that stand out as distinctively Earth Kingdom. Notably, nearly all names begin with consonants, with only 6 names beginning with a vowel, and always A or O. All of the consonant sounds found in English are represented in at least one name. The /ch/, /sh/, and /th/ digraphic sounds are all present, though not abundantly common. The Earth Kingdom being large and diverse, this greater diversity in names also makes sense.

There is evidence of unisex names in the Earth Kingdom. Wu is used by both a male and female character (Prince Wu and Aunt Wu), and the name Song which is listed as female above we will see again as the name of a male earthbender in Republic City. Other names could also be unisex, but as most are only used by one character, we have no way to know. The only noticeable gendered pattern seems to be that several female characters have English names, which I separated into the fifth column above. This seems to be exclusive or near-exclusive to Earth Kingdom women. Jet could also be interpreted as an English name, but as previously mentioned, this is possibly a pseudonym anyway.

The few named characters we have from Kyoshi Island all have authentic Japanese names, or at least names taken from the Japanese language - oyaji is an affectionate term meaning “old man” or “father”. Kyoshi is distinct from the rest of the Earth Kingdom in many other ways, including a history of isolationism which Japan also has. As for the sandbenders, we only have two names, but Ghashiun stands out as rather distinct in its spelling. Visually, the sandbenders resemble the Tuareg people of the Sahara region, so that might be the direction you want to go if you’re looking for authentic names to use for your sandbender OC’s.

The curious name Macmu-Ling is based on the surname of the writer for the episode she appeared in, Lauren MacMullan.

Fire Nation

We have 13 female names and 33 male names, for a total of 46 known Fire Nation names.

Two syllable names are most common, with 20 male and 6 female names, accounting for 26 out of the total 46, which is more than half. 15 names have one syllable, which is about one third of the total. Only 5 names have three syllables, or just one tenth, and once again there are no names longer than that.

The letter Z stands out as appearing in 8 names, while it’s much more rare in the other nations - though notably the Z in Zhao is pronounced differently than in the other names. Also worth noting is that all the names with Z other than Zhao - that is, all the names where Z is pronounced as it would be in English - are names of members of the royal family, with the exception of Kuzon. The digraphic sounds /ch/ and /sh/ are both present, but /th/ is not. Other absent sounds include /v/ and /w/.

The Fire Nation gives us our only example of gendered variants on the same name with Azulon and Azula. This implies that the -a ending is generally feminine, though we only have two female names that use it. Ilah ends with the same sound, albeit spelled with a silent H. There is also one masculine name, Yon Rha, that ends in -a, though with a different pronunciation (/ah/ vs. /uh/). The -on ending may also be masculine or generally masculine, but again, only two names use it. Female names are also more likely to end in the /ee/ sound, whether spelled -i or -ee, with 6 of the 13 female names ending this way. Only two male names end with this sound, and one of them, Li, is unisex.

In terms of basis in real world cultures, the Fire Nation often gets heavily identified with Japan in fanon, because they are an island nation with a history of imperialism, but what we see in canon is much more of a blend of Asian cultures, like the other nations. Some names, like Izumi and Roku are Japanese in origin, but some are also Chinese or Chinese-based such as Chan and Lu Ten. And as with the Water Tribes, the main characters like Zuko, Azula, Iroh, and Ozai, tend to have invented names. (Zuko especially would be odd as a Japanese name, since the -ko suffix in Japanese is feminine.) The name Ursa, curiously, is Latin - the feminine form of the word for “bear”. So while you certainly can use Japanese names for your Fire Nation OC’s, as with Inuit names in the Water Tribe, you’re not limited to that by any means. In fact, based on what we see in canon, I would say that if you’re creating several Fire Nation OC’s, you should have about an even mix of Japanese, Chinese, and invented names.

Air Nomads

With only 13 names, of which 9 are male and 4 are female, this is the smallest sample we have for any of the nations - understandably, since the Air Nomads are all but extinct for most of both shows. We’re even technically assuming that all of Tenzin’s children have Air Nomad names, but this is probably a safe assumption.

Two syllable names are still most common, with 9 of the 13, or about three fourths of the total. There are three names with three syllables, or a little less than one fourth. Aang has the only one syllable name.

With so few names, it’s hard to draw firm conclusions about phonetic patterns. The -a ending is seen on one name for each gender, as is the -i ending, and the -o ending appears on two male names and one female name. The -u ending only appears on one male name, but given the small sample size this doesn’t necessarily indicate a female Air Nomad name couldn’t have the same ending.

We do have clear and distinct real world basis for several Air Nomad names. Tenzin and Gyatso are both taken from the religious name of the current Dalai Lama. Rohan is an Indian name, and Laghima is a Hindu term for the spiritual power of becoming weightless. (Coincidentally, Rohan is also a French surname, but it was presumably the Indian name that the show meant to reference.) Pasang is a Nepali name, though a female one as far as I can tell, whereas it is used for a male Air Nomad. Tibetan, Nepalese, and Sanskrit names would thus all be good places to look for inspiration for your Air Nomad OC’s - though again, don’t feel limited to that. Chinese inspired names would also fit in, and Aang, like all the main characters, has an invented name.

United Republic of Nations

This group of character names, all from The Legend of Korra obviously, has to be considered differently. While we can make educated guesses as to the fictional ethnicity of most of these names, the fact is that many of these characters may be of mixed heritage and we can’t say for sure what the origins of their names are. In the chart below, I have color coded the names according to my best guess for nation of origin, rather than by gender. Names left in white, in my opinion, could be either Earth Kingdom or Fire Nation, and nothing about those characters gives us further clues.

With 31 names, we do have a decent sample size. Presumably Mako is a Fire Nation name and Bolin is Earth Kingdom, and based on the sound they do seem to fit in with those nations respectively. Raiko has a question mark because it is unclear if this is a given name or surname, but it does seem to follow the Zuko and Mako pattern and thus be most likely Fire Nation in origin. We also have the name Yasuko, for a character who is supposed to be of Fire Nation descent, using the -ko suffix on a feminine name.

Ginger and Buttercup I have designated as most likely Earth Kingdom because they are English names, and as we previously saw, only Earth Kingdom women seem to have names of this variety. Pema is presumably of at least partial Earth Kingdom descent based on her green eyes - this is also a real Bhutanese name. Characters like Lu, Gang, Daw, and Chung are all shown wearing green, and have one syllable names of the kind which are most common in the Earth Kingdom.

Hasook has a very distinctively Water Tribe name, and is of course a waterbender. Tahno and Ming-Hua are both waterbenders as well, though their names are less distinctively Water Tribe. These could simply be less typical names from one of the two polar tribes, or they may have Foggy Swamp Tribe heritage. (I believe this was a popular headcanon for Tahno, at least.) The possibility also exists that they have mixed heritage and may have Earth Kingdom or even Fire Nation names in spite of being waterbenders.

Conclusion

Like everything else in the world of Avatar, the names of the characters are inspired by and based on many real world cultures, primarily Asian, but no one fictional nation in the Avatar world corresponds exactly to a real world culture. When we look for or create names for original characters in this world, we want to respect the real world basis of these fictional cultures, but simply picking a Chinese, Japanese, or Inuit name from a list may not always jive with what we see in canon, in addition to running the risk of being a bit stereotypical.

With the canon patterns outlined above, fan fiction writers and fan artists should feel free to expand their search for names to other Asian, Arctic, or North African cultures, such as Thai, Burmese, Nepalese, Yupik, Aleut, or Berber names. Baby name lists can be helpful, but are often dubiously reliable, especially for non-Western cultures. Personally, when I want to give an OC an authentic name, I prefer to use Wikipedia to find real people from the culture or cultures I’m drawing on. I’ve joked about my own tendency to pick names of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean saints for my fan fiction, but searching for Wikipedia lists or categories of artists, philosophers, or scientists from a given culture can also be useful.

Wherever one chooses to look, name lists are best treated as a starting place - a name from a given real culture won’t necessarily fit into a given Avatar culture, and a name from a certain Avatar culture does not have to come from any particular real world culture. Fans should also feel free to invent names of their own, as the creators of Avatar did. Of the 20 major OC’s in my story Fate Deferred, half of them have real names or variations on real names, and the other half are invented.

And if you want to have a female Earth Kingdom OC named something like Jasmine or Crystal - these are also perfectly in line with canon.

1) How many complete fics/one-shots do you have that you have not published (yet)?

None, though I have the next few chapters of Fragile Normality done and ready for posting when they're scheduled.

2) How many WIPS do you have right now?

One, the rest of FN. I have other ideas floating around, but I'm not sure I'd call them WIPs so much as "thoughts I've jotted down and may or may not get back to".

3) Do you take writing requests or write original ideas, or both?

I used to take requests, but no longer and haven't for a long time. So only original ideas!

4) If you do take requests, how many do you currently have?

None!

5) How many fandoms do you write for?

Just Pedro's at the moment, though I've dabbled in Triple Frontier and Star Wars in general with Boba in the past.

6) Are there any fandoms you wrote for in the past that you no longer write for?

I wrote one OC fic when I was like... 14 that was a very thinly-veiled reader insert with band RPF. No I will not say which band, and the fic itself has long since been scrubbed from the internet because quite frankly it's embarrassing to think about lmao.

7) Do you write for ships, reader inserts or other?

Reader inserts, though I've considered writing some original works too.

8) Niche fandoms/characters you write for?

Does Whiskey count as niche...? I feel like he's kind of a niche character. But other than that, several other PP characters would probably fit the bill.

9) Do you read fics as well as write them?

Not as much as I'd like to. I'll read them if it's a friend's fic and they've tagged me, but unfortunately I rarely have the time to venture out and read others' fics as of late.

10) What is your favorite genre to write for?

Horror/thriller/suspense with romance thrown in. Just for funsies.

11) What is your favorite trope (to read/write)?

"There's only one bed", "friends to lovers", "apocalypse romance", "monster/human romance", plus just about every other fluff trope you can think of.

12) What do you do to get motivated to write?

Procrastinating on something else I'm supposed to be doing usually does the trick.

Not really. If I like to read it, I'll write it too.

I no longer take requests, but I've been feeling a pull towards Dieter Bravo lately. I think he'd be fun to write something for, though I'm not sure what. It's hard for me to get a handle on his character from just a few seconds of trailer screen time.

Almost 2 years! (Unless you count my previously mentioned fic I wrote in middle school. Which I do not lmao)

I did! In fact, I sent a few asks to authors here under the "⭐ Anon" nickname before I made this blog, just to see if my ideas would be received well enough to warrant posting them.

17) Do you only post on Tumblr, or any other sites as well?

I also post on Ao3 under the same username, though I have yet to migrate most of my works over there and I don't respond to comments. Right now only original, full fics are posted there, and they're always posted here first. If you see my works anywhere else, they've been stolen, so please let me know.

18) What do you personally consider the word counts of "Drabble", "One shots" and "fics"?

Hmm... a drabble I would consider 500-1000 words. One shots and fics are... interchangeable to me, so anything over that 1000 word threshold counts for both in my mind.

19) Which do you prefer to write more? HC, drabbles, oneshots/fics, multi chapter stories, other?

Drabbles or one-shots mostly, contrary to my recent writing habits lol

20) Are there any stories you have discontinued? If so, why?

None that I can think of!

21) What is one of your main "pet-peeves" as a writer on Tumblr?

I'm gonna seem like a jackass, but I still can't get over how my most-interacted-with fic in forever was Heat Part 1, and I fully believe that's because I said there wouldn't be a smutty part 2 unless people showed interest. Like I had to promise smut and hold part of my story hostage in order to get any interaction.

22) Do you write a particular time of day?

Not really. It varies, depending on when I have the inspiration.

23) Do you listen to music, ambiance/noise, etc to write or do you need silence?

As much as I'd love to listen to music while I write, I have to have silence or white noise like a fan.

24) Do you outline your fics at all before writing?

25) Do you post your writing as soon as you finish it, or do you schedule it to come out at a specific time/day?

With one-shots, they go up the same day I finish them (though usually at 6pm EST). With multi-chapter, I schedule them like I'm doing with Fragile Normality.

I've got an analytical-opinion Q for you: Kuroshitsuji is obvs. not an allegory or anything; Seb is diagetically a demon etc, but Yana's BoA interview mentioning how one of its themes is "what would you do if a demon was by your side" + your excellent post on why Sebastian is so toxic for OC got me thinking: do you think there's any interpretive merit to also viewing him as a kind of manifestation of OC's psychological/emotional "demons"?

Dear Anon,

First of all my apologies for my super late reply. Your question is a very good one and I honestly have been thinking about it since I received it. And all this time I’ve been going back and forth between: “yes” and “no” to your question ( ´艸｀)

In the end, I think I will settle with “no, I don’t think it is a good idea to equate Sebas to a kind of manifestation of O!Ciel’s psychological/emotional demons.”

Sometimes Beneficial...

The first reason I think so is because by interpreting Sebas as part of O!Ciel’s own demons, we do overlook the fact that Sebas is SOMETIMES actually helpful. If one were to equate Sebas to O!Ciel’s own darkest sides of his trauma or personality, it would be implying that somebody’s inner demons are of some kind of actual benefit at times. If the ‘benefits’ cannot be achieved through a non-toxic method, then such benefits are no real benefits.

For example, there were instances wherein Sebas was mean, but ultimately he did push O!Ciel to continue fighting. Though, the fighting was at the expense of O!Ciel’s long term health. In this sense Sebas is an ‘inner demon’ that can be useful, but is ultimately bad. This is the reason I did actually consider the answer to your question being “yes”.

Another example is when O!Ciel threw away the vastly important momento of his dead father, but Sebas retrieved and even repaired it for him. It is “nice”, but when O!Ciel threw it away it was likewise symbolic of him rejecting a past that would drag him down. Here too Sebas “retrieved” O!Ciel’s traumatic memories to make sure he would continue on his path of self destructive vengeance.

However, there are also rare moments wherein Sebas genuinely tried his best to consider O!Ciel’s well-being, such as when he protected O!Ciel on the sinking ship. There Sebas exposed himself to great danger to protect his master.

Yes, in the end it was because Sebas CANNOT let O!Ciel die if it is within his own powers, and that for the sake of himself ultimately being able to have his dinner. So Sebas’ motivations are never fully benign/selfless.

Indeed, emotional demons can 'help’ one person to climb out of a terrible situation so that another terrible situation can happen instead. For example, somebody who is down can get back to their feet because their inner demons tells them: “if you don’t you’re worthless”. But once the person is back on their feet again the inner demon leads them to do something detrimental again.

However, because on the Campania it was a matter of life and death, the case is quite different again. Had Sebas let O!Ciel die, then NOTHING would have happened afterwards. So in this sense, Sebas saving O!Ciel’s life (for selfish reasons or not) was the only right thing to do. In short, unlike what Sebas did, human emotional demons usually don’t put themselves in harm’s way for the sake of destroying the host later. Emotional demons usually only feed themselves at the expense of its host.

Exorcism of Inner Demons?

Though incredibly difficult, in theory psychological demons CAN be exorcised with proper help and unwavering determination. Sebas however, cannot be exorcised no matter how determined O!Ciel would be to achieve that. If he does, then by contract he would have doomed himself to becoming instant dinner. This is where a comparison between Sebas and psychological demons proves itself to be imperfect, because if a real person were determined enough to ‘exorcise’ their own demons, they would not automatically doom themselves. They might experience a deep dive for a bit! But they have not automatically sentenced themselves to death.

Another reason this comparison would have cracks is that Sebas can in fact be killed by external forces (Undertaker) and that O!Ciel wouldn’t need to do anything to get that result. Though it is a real misconception, real emotional demons can never be taken away by a third party without one’s own work.

Conclusion

So to conclude, though it is very tempting and even satisfying to interpret Sebas as a personification of O!Ciel’s inner demon, in the end the comparison breaks if analysed thoroughly.

Sebas is toxic to O!Ciel, he arose because the boy was treated so awfully, and most of Sebas’ “good deeds” are for the sake of the boy’s final destruction: these aspects make the comparison juicy and epiphany-worthy perhaps.

However, Sebas does also at times put himself in harm’s way for his host, and can be ‘exorcised’ by an external force without O!Ciel needing to put in the work himself. Though the juiciness of the comparison is still tempting to me, ultimately these latter factors are the ‘deal breakers’ for me to support the comparison.

i’m putting this under a cut because it’s really long :)

i’m too lazy to tag, so open tags!

1) How many complete fics/one shots do you have (that you have not published yet)? none! i’m in school right now and it takes me a lot longer to finish fics because i have homework, so i rarely get a chance to keep fics in the wings like that. during the summer though, especially as the marvel xreader fanfiction fest and peggysous week roll around, that number will definitely go up!

2) How many WIPS do you have right now? in terms of fics i have physically started but not finished, one. i can’t jump around too much so i try to focus on a few things at a time, and right now that goal is finishing my latest bucky series before i can start my next agent carter bingo fic.

3) Do you take writing requests or write original ideas, or both? both!! i take requests sometimes, but if i get too overwhelmed i will close them. i’m looking to do some kind of request collection with song prompts in late spring, as long as i finish some other stuff first! a lot of my fics are written for events too.

4) If you do take requests, how many do you currently have? one, a loki academic rivals au! if you know baseball terms, it’s “in the hole” in terms of writing order :)

5) How many fandoms do you write for? 6 right now!! they are: marvel, agent carter (i know it’s marvel but it’s better than regular marvel so i consider it separate), star wars, the suicide squad, knives out, the x files

6) Are there any fandoms you wrote for in the past that you no longer write for? yes. i used to be an rpf writer for another fandom a long time ago but now i don’t really vibe with the concept of rpf.

7) Do you write for ships, reader inserts or other? reader inserts and ships! i’m not really an oc person, even when i read.

8) Niche fandoms/characters you write for? the characters from agent carter are my most niche i think. that fandom tends to be ship focused rather than xreader focused, but there are still a decent number of people out there looking for xreaders with those characters, who have expressed their interest in those fics. also the show as a whole is criminally underrated

9) Do you read fics as well as write them? not as much as i’d like to tbh. i have a hard time finding fics to read on tumblr (there is so. much. smut. on here) so i tend to go to ao3 first because of the filtering options, but even then i feel like i never have the time.

10) What is your favorite genre to write for? okay so my favorite genre to write is what i’ve referred to as “good for her,” and that usually is like mob/generally more violent fics. i love a good mob au but most of them out there are smut (which i don’t read) or modern (i’m a historical au girlie when it comes to mob fics) so it’s kind of a “write what you want to see” situation.

11) What is your favorite trope (to read/write)? enemies to lovers, but specifically coupled with another trope like one bed, marriage of convenience, undercover as lovers, etc

12) What do you do to get motivated to write? i have a pretty long drive to school, so i tend to think of fic ideas then (when i’m not giving world tour caliber concerts on the highway). i also try not to let my mind wander when i’m cooking anymore, after i’ve nearly burned myself because i got a fic epiphany.

13) Is there a trope/genre you like to read, but not write? i am a slut for an unhappy ending fic. major character death, irreconcilable breakup, tragic accident, you name it- i’ve read it. i do like writing that stuff too, but i try not to do so too often because i like to have variety in what i write.

14) Any characters/fandoms you want to write for that are never requested? yes and no, this is something that changes all the time!! sam wilson and peggy carter are the ones that come to mind right now though :)

15) How long have you been writing fanfiction? i only started posting on tumblr in may of 2020, but i’ve been writing since 2016 (when i was 15!). all of the stuff available on the internet is from 2019 and on though.

16) Did you read fan fiction before you started writing? i started reading marvel fanfic in spring 2018, after i binged all the movies from start to finish, but i didn’t pick up writing marvel fic until fall of 2019, when i started college. i used to read and write before that, but there was a period of time where i was taking a hiatus/exiting another fandom, so it doesn’t really count in my eyes.

17) Do you only post on Tumblr, or any other sites as well? i post on ao3 and wattpad as well (under the username starlightpeggy if it’s reader-insert, and my ao3 for ship fics is fandomsandxfiles, same as my primary tumblr blog).

18) What do you personally consider the word counts of "Drabble", "One shots" and "fics"? i have a very specific scale for fic identification!! a lot of my influence on this has come from the x files fandom, which is a much older fandom, so i know it’s different than a lot of my mutuals who only have experiences in younger fandoms like marvel.

drabble: exactly 100 words. no more, no less.

double drabble: exactly 200 words, no more no less.

blurb: less than 500 words and not a drabble/double drabble

ficlet: between 500-1000 words.

one shots: over 1000 words

i don’t really use the term “fic” to describe any specific type of writing, just as a general term.

19) Which do you prefer to write more? HC, drabbles, oneshots/fics, multi chapter stories, other? i am a one shot girl. i like that they’re short and sweet but also long enough to hold a whole storyline, and then i can quickly bounce between concepts without leaving people hanging for updates.

20) Are there any stories you have discontinued? If so, why? i had one multichapter fic that i discontinued, but then came back to it a year later. now, i don’t post any multichapter fic i don’t intend to update less than once a week, and if it’s 5 chapters or more, i won’t post the first chapter until i’m at least done with chapter 3 and working on chapter 4, or if i’m done with the fic altogether.

21) What is one of your main "pet-peeves" as a writer on Tumblr? people who cry about their fics not getting recognition and guilt their followers into giving them feedback, especially if they have more notes than a lot of other writers. it’s really only rampant for a small group of characters, and i’ve actually noticed a drop in notes for fics with those characters since the posts started making their way around. now obviously correlation doesn’t always equal causation, but i really think those posts actually do more harm than good.

my opinion on the matter is this: reblogs are truly the best way to support writers you like, but at the end of the day you can’t force anyone to put something on their blog that they don’t want to. once you realize that, writing gets a whole lot more fun.

22) Do you write a particular time of day? mostly at night! i try to have all my stuff done by dinner time, so after dinner i can just write/relax until i go to bed.

23) Do you listen to music, ambiance/noise, etc to write or do you need silence? it really depends, but i like to listen to music when i write, or at least like a soothing instrumental meditation from youtube.

24) Do you outline your fics at all before writing? it depends on the length of the fic!! i don’t outline short stuff, but i try to for long one shots or multichapter stuff.

25) Do you post your writing as soon as you finish it, or do you schedule it to come out at a specific time/day? after i finish a fic, i set it aside for anywhere from 1 day to 3 weeks before i edit it, and the time it sits will depend on like if the fic has a due date, how many other fics i have on deck already, etc. i like to post all my fics at around the same time, so i usually schedule it between 7-8 pm EST to stay consistent. if it’s a fic that i only put on ao3 (i really only do this for ship fics, which people don’t really follow me for) and i just put an announcement and a link here, then i post it whenever i want.
