Remember when he said "I'm gonna play to my strengths. I don't know what they are yet, but I'm gonna play them".
This past month.. I think he found it 😳

Hi BPP,
I hope you doing well.
I love reading your posts. I actually look forward for hem every single time.
I was wondering if you could talk a bit more about BTS and their stage presence more specifically the ones that seem to be fan favourites for their stage presence. I hear this a lot but can't tell how to know who has the best stage presence. is it more of a subjective thing or can this be considered objectively?
Would just love to hear how you classify your thoughts around this?
**
Hi Anon,
Thanks for the lovely ask!
(The post is a bit long, so please grab a seat and make yourself comfortable)
To have 'stage presence' is to be charismatic on stage. When people talk about an idol having 'stage presence', I think oftentimes what they mean is that this idol is the person who left them kinda awestruck. For some people, stage presence boils down to the wink out of nowhere that surprised them, the intense smoldering stare that made them blush, etc, but anon you're right to think it's a bit more than just that.
'Stage presence' is essentially performance showmanship. And Showmanship is all about connecting with the audience, keeping them transfixed, or in other words impressing your audience. And from this definition, right away we get the answer to your penultimate question: "is it more of a subjective thing or can this be considered objectively?"
Kinda cliché to say but the answer is it's a bit of both. Stage presence is both objective and subjective, and what I’ve seen in K-pop fandoms is stage presence is determined more by a 50/50 split in objective and subjective.
Let's think about it for a moment. To wow any audience you'd have to have decent performance skills at the very least (which in k-pop would be in dancing, rapping, and/or singing) - that's the objective part, as well as something else that makes you very appealing to at least some people in the audience (which in k-pop is usually related to outfits or physical presentation, gestures, the strength in their movements, singing or rapping, or something as simple as how the idol walks) - this is the subjective part.
I think one reason BTS is as big as they are is that over the years, every member, not just one or two, has developed their own performance art.
For the rapline you really see it during their unit performances where they're in their element (and don't have to do any dancing). An example is the Tear live performance at Wembley .
youtube
All three showed peerless skill, made eye contact with the audience and the strength in their delivery, that passion, the fact you can clearly hear them rapping LIVE over the backtrack... Not one of them danced in this performance and yet it's undeniable they absolutely crushed the stage and captivated an audience of over 100,000 people.
*
The thing is, most BTS performances aren't unit performances and they usually feature pretty intense and elaborate choreography and storytelling, which means it's those who excel in dancing, especially those skilled in dancing as storytelling, that will most often stand out to most people.
In BTS, members in the Maknae line are said to be the members with the most stage presence. This could be because they're seemingly the most conventionally attractive and charismatic to many people, but I think it's also related to the basic function of what they do well: singing and dancing, as that's primarily what BTS performances are so the ML get the most time on stage being seen in their element.
I know I've sort of knocked on Taehyung before for usually doing more dancing with his face and fingers than his body, but I also genuinely think Tae is very skilled at storytelling. His Singularity performance is a very good example of this, and while his dancing does nothing for me, I can appreciate how constantly dynamic his face and tongue is on stage. He's probably been told all his life he's got a conventionally handsome face, and I honestly respect him for shamelessly using it so... so much.
Tumblr media
(Anti-climactic I know but the word on the tip of my fingers was... let's leave it at 'much' instead. :))
And then there's Jungkook who is literally a powerhouse on stage. You can tell this guy boxes in his spare time and works out religiously. Like I don't even know what to say besides have you seen Jungkook during the 2019 free Lotte Family concert?
youtube
(You just had to be there. Imagine seeing this LIVE. I lost my wig and dignity and didn't care to find it till the boys walked off that stage.)
*
youtube
(Like is there anything more to say? Times like this I just want to rapid type in another language cause English isn't enough to express how completely Jungkook reset the circadian rhythms of thousands of women, men, children and puppies that day.)
Something I've noticed Jungkook has recently gotten better at is including softer elements into his movements, while maintaining his strength. Jimin is still the person who can do this best in BTS (and probably in all of k-pop), but we have to give Jungkook credit where credit is due. Black Swan Jungkook is the final boss of all JK's stage presence moments in his career so far, which makes me very excited for what more we'll get from him. He's only getting started.
*
Now Anon, if you've read to this point you might be wondering where I place Jin and Jimin, so I'll give a summary by ranking the members' stage presence that suits my preference, from least to most.
7. Jin
6. V
5. RM
4. SUGA
3. Jungkook
2. J-hope
Jimin.
*
Now, I'm going to try very hard to be brief and I hope what I'm about to say isn't seen as an insult by those who like him, but I have no other way to say it:
Where Taehyung can be a bit of a tease, and Jungkook is a powerhouse, Jimin is a completely different animal. I mean this almost literally. Jimin's energy on stage as I see it, whether the performance is delicate or strong, is purely animalistic. Sometimes I think back to the PTD LA concerts last December, on Day 4 during the Dope performance, just before the final chorus of the song, Jimin moves to take the center position, quickly smiles to someone in the audience just before the chorus starts, then the chorus starts and you can see his eyes go. Like he's gone. He honestly looks as though something has possessed him. People around me gasped. Then screamed. A man (?) one row behind me started crying. Anybody who knows the moment I'm talking about should kindly link me to a vid cause I can't find it. The closest I could find is this fancam (timestamp - 6:46)
youtube
There is a reason nearly all the top performers in BTS have said they've learned from watching Jimin. Everything I've said to describe all the members strengths so far, whether facial gestures, powerhouse strength, etc, applies to Jimin in spades. The subjective and objective characteristics of stage presence I mentioned above, hold true with Jimin too.
*
Personally, if I was making the rules, I’d say the split on determining stage presence should be something like 70% objective and 30% subjective. Because skill and execution have technical attributes that can be evaluated and ranked, and should honestly be appreciated more in my opinion. But this is K-pop and as I said in my fanfics post, we’re all thirsty and that’s really why most of us are here (lol). What quenches that thirst is very different/subjective for all of us, and that’s okay too.
C'est fini.

I want to talk about how Taylor can capture any crowds attention specially when she’s a surprise guest. It’s fucking amazing! Her presence, her charm, everything! She easily gets people’s attention!
Yeah, she does. With just herself and a guitar. It's amazing and a real skill. Even at her own shows, she has huge production, but then she strips it back and is just as mesmerising. I don't think there's many people that could keep the attention of 60/70k people alone with an acoustic guitar.
I would LOVE to see her do a full acoustic show, preferably jn a small venue, but I don't think that'll happen anytime soon.
In the meantime I'll retain my hope for evermore long pond 😂❤️
