Star Wars Book Cover Overview

The Twitter User "SCentralized" inspired me with his "if this Star Wars show/movie were a Book of Expanded Universe in the mid 90s" Covers to do a little overview of Star Wars cover designs.

In this post I will go through these Covers. I hope you have fun with it!

1970s / 1980s:

The first "era" of covers I would call the "Classic SciFi Cover " era. It includes the novel adaptationsof the OT as well as "Splinter of the Mind Eye", "The Han Solo/Lando Calrissian Adventures" The covers are designed the way sci-fi novels often looked at the time.

The 1990s

Things got really fancy in the 90s. The covers of the "Movie Poster" era look like the posters of Original Trilogy. That may be due in part to the fact that Drew Struzan designed some of those covers. The books of this era are works of art and the cover alone makes you want to read the book.

1999 - 2005

That changed in the early 2000s when the Star Wars publishing rights went back to Del Rey. This "Early Del Rey" era is dominated by 2 cover types: Promo images of the movies put together in Photoshop, and abstract illustrations that sometimes looked really good, sometimes weird. This era spanned the entire period of the prequels' release. 1999-2005. The prequel era books mostly featured promo images and the "New Jedi Order" series, also released during this time, featured illustrated covers.

2006 - 2009

From 2006 onwards, there was a mixture of Photoshop, but also a return to illustrations and, for a short time, 3Dish models. One example of this is the "Darth Bane Rule of Two", Fortunately, this trend was quickly discarded.

2009 - Today

In 2009, the "Fate of the Jedi" series started with an interesting cover design. Personally, I'm a big fan of it.

From then on, the focus was completely back on illustrations, and it has remained that way until today.

Every now and then, however, there are "relapses" into the past. For example, Star Wars Brotherhood or Jedi Battle Scars.

Of course, this is only a selection of covers and not all covers were and are the same - that would be boring. But it is interesting to see what "trends" there were and are.

A passage from Padawan by Kiersten White confirming Canon Bi / Acespec / Aromantic Obi-Wan Kenobi, pages 172-174 (full transcript under the cut) 

"Your sister is impressive," Obi-Wan observed as Casul rejoined him.

"She and Zae-Brit are in love and have been forever Casul cautioned.

"Oh, I know!" Obi-Wan smiled at the warning, touched that Casul didn't want Obi-Wan getting his hopes

“I can’t form attachments like that, anyway." 

Couldn't he, though, if he didn't go back? Was that something he would even want? It had always been so forbidden, even thinking about it was like holding his hand right next to a lightsaber blade. He knew some of his friends had dabbled in physical relationships-suspected Siri would have been open to it, had he ever wanted to-but it had always seemed like an obstacle, not a temptation.

"And besides," Obi-Wan said, rushing to change the subject for himself more than anyone, "I would never want to be in a relationship with a leader. Too close to politicians or royalty. I'm sure if I ever fell in love, it would be with someone calm. Peaceful. Easy to get along with.”

"So you want someone who doesn't challenge you."

Obi-Wan laughed, then shrugged. 

"I don't know what I want, if we're being honest." Casul mirrored his shrug. "Not many choices around here. I don't think love is in my future, either, and I'm fine with that. As long as I have the Power to keep my family safe, that's enough for me. Though I will admit I've been curious about kissing and why Audj and Zae-Bri enjoy it so much. So if you're ever curious, too, let me know."

Obi-Wan blushed. "I will. Let you know, I mean. Not that I will do that, right now, with you. Or anyone."

Would he ever get to a point where kissing someone felt like anything less than a betrayal of himself and the Jedi? And if he did get to that point, who would he want to kiss? The Lenahrans were confident and charismatic, which was attractive. But he couldn't imagine just ... kissing any of them. Maybe he didn't want to be with any of them but rather to be more like each of them.

Or maybe he wanted to kiss all of them. Not Mem, though, because he had a feeling that would upset her very much.

He wasn't going to kiss any of them, regardless. Everything on Lenahra seemed simple and felt impossibly complicated, and that would doubtless make it all worse.

WRITING IN GENERAL (For those who don't want to die like Stormtroopers)

SlickWrite: Completely free; online. Checks grammar, punctuation, flow, and writing style according to different settings (including fiction writing).

ProWritingAid: [RECOMMENDED] One of the most thorough online proofreader I've ever used. Although when using a free account gives extremely thorough feedback, with +20 different in-depth reports, for only the first 500 words. However, you can earn a premium account license (for a year or for life) if you get 10 or 20 new users signing up for free; (if you wouldn't mind doing so using the link above and help me earn mine, please). The settings allow you to check your writing according to your needs, from general to formal to creative. It has a bonus that you can check depending on the genre you're writing. For example, in creative, you can choose romance or sci-fiction (there are 14 sub-genre in total). And just like google docs, you can share a document, and people can view, comment or edit it too.

LanguageTool: [RECOMMENDED] Another excellent proofreader. It also has a word limit in free accounts, but if you use the add-on for Google Docs, it counts each page as a new document, so hitting the word limit is nearly impossible. It helps you to rewrite a sentence (3 a day), even if it doesn't raise any flags; it's very useful for when your sentence is grammatically correct, but it doesn't feel quite right.

Grammarly, Hemingway Editor: No so great, but they do the basic job.

so there's this devastating period of dramatic irony during revenge of the sith where obi-wan genuinely believes that anakin died on coruscant during order 66, like he assumes anakin died a hero at the temple, going down with the order itself, because it doesn't occur to him that it may be any other way. his grief is overwhelming, he's shaking and lost and needs yoda to reorient himself back into being a jedi at all. he does pull himself together, but then matthew woodring stover decides to punch the audience in the gut anyway:

just look at obi-wan instinctively thinking of himself in the first person plural because anakin is so much a part of who he is and how he approaches the world, so deeply embedded in his language patterns too. like how many times must he have been accidentally slapped by memories like this, even after discovering what anakin became? his habitual jokes and quips are tied to the man he used to banter with so often. his mind is full of mines armed with grief haha
