I think maybe not enough people in disability spaces think about what it's like to need the assistance of a carer.

It's a different experience for different levels of need. Some of us might need only low support, or support with specific tasks. Others need higher support, and there are many disabled people who need assistance with most or all daily tasks.

Dependence is a scary thought for some people, but for many it's a part of everyday life. Some level of dependence is common for disabled people, and needing carers or support workers is not as uncommon as people think.

Disability conversations often don't discuss carers, or don't allow people to bring their carers into the conversation. Some people may need assistance from carers or support workers to be in a physical place for community. Some might need help using online spaces like tumblr. Some might need help communicating. Carers are a part of life for many and talking about carers is important.

Carers can be positive, supportive and good relationships. But can also be stifling or even abusive. Care is complicated, and people should be able to talk about it.

I can only talk about my experience of lower level care. I invite people with formal support workers and full time care to share.

it's also realizing that these movies existed because adults felt like those ants. They wanted to organize and do something and they felt like they couldn't so they made those movies for us. So that the next generation of workers would understand their fate and power and be motivated to change our reality.

I'm an anticapitalist because some people at Pixar a long time ago put all of their faith and hope into teaching kids, that we deserved better. And that one day we'd be big enough to fight for it.

I've grown.

And I'm ready to punch some crickets in the face.

This entire thread is horrifying. I was so lucky that my ochem professor let me take the final the next day after I missed it (and in that case it was my own fault, read the time wrong and thought it was later than it actually was)

#professors and grade school teachers who do this shit should be fired #not even joking there needs to be federal protections in place to prevent this from happening to students and workers #like blatant disability discrimination aside its still fucked for people to be punished for a car accident or for a death in the family

i feel like it's worth remembering that the most vulnerable people aren't just being "inconvenienced" by strikes. the only reason strikes work is because they grind an industry to a halt, and that genuinely can result in very dangerous situations for some people. the bystanders probably arent a huge issue with like the writers strike, but without say, UPS, a lot of people will not get medicine, food, and other essentials in time. and of course the workers themselves are sacrificing potentially everything to hold the line.

TO BE CLEAR, this is not the fault of the striking workers. the corporations could end this at any moment by choosing to be slightly less evil, and workers should not have to choose between endangering themselves constantly or endangering random strangers sometimes. but i feel like i see a lot of very flippant posts coming from a place of privilege where they're like "lol yeah i would love to be slightly inconvenienced all the time so people can be paid more, dont be a baby" as if strikes are a simple and easy solution, and not something people very bravely do, if not as a last resort, at least after exhausting the less dangerous options. fighting for our rights is not painless.

#just in general i see a lot of people like 'we should do away with [x thing disabled people rely on] to make things better for workers :)'#and its just so completely misguided #the solution is not to do away with these services it is to better compensate the workers #and hire more workers so no one is being overworked #and make sure they are safe with stuff like aircon #people really think if they dont use a service much it must not be important

The bourgeois or "exploiting class" doesn't inherently include the person who gets their nails done biweekly, or the disabled person who has a carer, or the guy who got a $70 video game for full-price, or the person who relies on medication (yes even the ones you don't think they "need"), or anything else like this. None of these people will, on average, have the ability to exploit workers by means of ownership or whatever.

While you are busy fighting with fellow workers, you are still being exploited by your boss, by capitalism, by (potentially) not having healthcare, by being overworked and underpaid, and so are they.

Yup, that includes nonspeaking and partially speaking autistic folks too. And learning disabled autistics. And autistic folk with lots of co-occurring conditions. And autistic wheelchair users ♿️ and other mobility aid users. Did you know that increasing evidence is being found of co-occurrence of autism and hypermobility disorders, including Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes, Marfan Syndrome and Joint Hypermobility Syndrome?

That includes queer and binary and nonbinary trans autistics - did you know autistic folks are about three times more likely to be trans or gender-nonconforming than the general population?

That includes sex workers too - did you know sex work is one job a lot of autistic folk can actually manage to do, and that’s really vital when it’s so difficult for so many of us to access disability benefits and reasonable accommodations in paid work?

That includes autistics with mental health diagnoses, including schizophrenia and psychosis. Autistic folks in prison and with criminal records too - do you know that the U.K. Government’s own disability strategy notes that about 40% of people in the criminal system are neurodivergent and/or learning disabled?

That includes Black autistics, indigenous autistics and autistics of colour, who are not only horribly more likely to be the targets of violence, including fatal violence, from law enforcement and from paid carers - the Judge Rotenberg Centre, notorious for subjecting autistics to *electric shocks* as punishment, primarily hosts BIPOC folk - but are also far more likely to be misdiagnosed or go undiagnosed?

I hate democrats with all my very heart but I can't in good faith advise to vote 3rd party in these hell years when they would see every trans person hang and be off hormones. When the transphobia is not at its height (Eg, like. a few years ago) I would 100% agree with you, but the stakes are too high. If the states falls to transphobia, even more countries will follow it. I think it's harmful to consider not voting D this upcoming election. Once they got off tihs current bend, I could get behind where you are coming from.

GA & VA are blue states this year btw. It's gotten worse since May and and April, too. The mid terms didn't save anyone.

Also if you, the person reading this, have considered voting 3rd party pls know it's not nearly as unpopular or as unlikely of a win as Democrats want you to think it is.

People would vote for a good 3rd party candidate, actually.

Dems convincing you its a long shot is absolutely a self-preserving psyop hoping to convince you otherwise. Its a half-assed theory that blatantly denies what we learned from 2016 and can still see in polls.

And that's 3rd party candidates stand a shot of they can get in the primaries for the general election. People want progressives. People were pissed and turned to voting for Trump when Sanders fell out- not Clinton.

They need and want another option and it's not a long shot or unlikely. They just need to make it to the primaries.

Cornel West is not running as a Democrat and thus does not need to battle Biden for a spot on the general ballot in November of 2024....

I'm a decolonial anarchist that hates the state and sees voting as nothing as upholding the state. I make no room for Democrats because Democrats lack the ambition to challenge anything about it.

But unless Cornel West drops out or ends up being some awful closeted abused... Im going to vote for him.

A lot of his politics and campaign goals align with my politics. I wouldn't feel like I was settling if I voted for him.

And a lot of this stuff isn't unreasonable or unrealistic either. Like I just made a post about how the NDAA budget proposal for 2024 is being increased with enough money to solve clean water, homelessness, and implement free college tuition for the whole USA. And Republicans are fighting for more.

And that's just the budget for two years, it'll probably be increased by another hundred billion in a couple years. Nobody blinks when the military budget is swelling like that.

But we should when we can be using that kind of money to solve real problems that real people are having and face and would change lives literally overnight. They just throw that money at the military where most of us never see it again.

But this stuff can be real.

I saw a post about someones plans for after the revolution, and I’m begging leftist to get serious for 5 minutes. Y’all talk about and predict a revolution with the same reliability and trustworthiness as evangelicals talk about armageddon. US Leftist can’t keep their shit together enough to wear masks and to help poor people get masks because they are expensive. But sure a revolution is going to happen any day now. In the US many disabled people like myself are now homebound because we can’t safely go outside. Abled leftist admittedly refuse to do anything to change that. They are to busy posting quotes from long dead white men, about ideas those dead white men stole from indigenous peoples. If US leftist can’t cope with something like covid, how the fuck do you expect to pull off a revolution?

also relating to antipsych - ppl are sooo often confused when I express distrust of social workers and say that replacing cops with social workers is not a solution. this is not an explanation but it should get the ball rolling in your head: social workers used to exist primarily to recommend which individuals be sterilized by the state.
