this is sappy but whatever. i wrote most of this before the season started (which is why i come off as reasonable and somewhat mentally stable about all of this) but felt appropriate to post it now as a thank you. ❤️

i have vivid memories from the night b99 was cancelled. the news came late evening my time, and i had been editing fic and checked twitter and there it was. loud and clear. i don’t remember which site it was but the picture was jake and amy with their wedding cake and that made everything feel even worse.

i remember freaking out even though i had been prepared, because those last days before the news hit on tumblr were... panicked. but i still freaked out to the extent that i ran outside in my pajama pants and hoodie and blue plastic slippers and called my mom, and then i walked up and down the streets where i lived in the darkness and cried in frustration as she tried to talk me down. i remember there were random guys with motorcycles out? but i was too hysterical to care. i’m pretty sure i screamed something to my mom about ”HOW CAN BIG BANG THEORY GET A BILLION SEASONS BUT THIS SHOW GETS CANCELLED????”

i know everyone who was in the fandom at the time has their cancellation story. what played the biggest part in mine was the fact that i felt like i hadn’t had enough time. really, i had only just become active in the fandom, only just started interacting with people on here and writing my first few fics, but i was absolutely loving it. it was giving me happiness again after a long period of emptiness and depressive feelings. when it was cancelled, what made me feel the worst was the fact that i’d had so little time – to make friends, write fic and react to episodes together. i felt deeply jealous of everyone who’d gotten more.

thinking about it coming to an end now has made me remember that night and those feelings of jealousy. because i did get more time. i got three more years. that night, i remember asking for just one, for a half, for anything, and i got three years.

and these three years have been a whirlwind of emotions and feelings and episodes and debates and discussions and gifsets and fanfic and asks and having this as my safe space while pretty much everything changed around me in the outside world, and i just want you all to know that i have never taken a single day of them for granted. this show could have been taken from me before i’d ever gotten the chance to grow with it and alongside it, and instead it was part of my life for three whole years.

i have a really, really good memory (four time quiz champion anyone? just me?okay <3), and i remember so much of it in such detail, and it's so weird to think about how long it's been when it also feels like yesterday.

i remember my first comment on peraltiago parenting experience, my first episode-related fic, the insane high after the renewal, staying up all night to watch the wedding live. i remember writing fanfiction on the beach while on vacation in greece, on a plane to berlin, at home on my parents balcony late late at night. i remember the honeymoon episode title being released, s6 starting filming again, the excitement over every little piece of news and finding about the cast directing. i remember labor fic and christmas fics and when i scroll back to pictures of my paris trip in january 2019 it's interspersed with a billion pictures of andy at the golden globes. i remember lighting my fairy lights in my little basement room and watching season 6 in bed at 2.30 am if it was a big episode, and watching it in the morning before fridays in high school most days. i remember writing post-ep fics during classes and on my phone on subways and trains. i remember the s7 news, and the casecation nerves and debates, and fucking kissgate. being named "the class amy santiago" by my friends when we graduated and getting a little silver paper plate to show for it. i remember the first fic exchange and inventing julian and simon santiago and i remember meeting @johnny-and-dora and eating wagamamas in manchester and talking about how simon santiago was DEFINITELY on the stairs and buying a little fake plant that i named andy plantberg (he's still in a box somewhere). i remember writing fic during slow hours in the ice cream shop i worked at. moving and putting up my framed b99 poster in my own apartment (very much still up). finding out about trying and everyone going fucking crazy. infertility fic. melissa's pregnancy news. s7 promo and standing outside my job the very first day and texting siân "AMY HAS TO PEE!!!!!???" because that was in the promo and we knew there were pregnancy tests involved in the first episode. the crazy happiness of s7 finally premiering. everyone going crazy about jake and amy deciding to start trying and how i could quote the scene verbatim the next few days. the week leading up to trying, what turned out to be the last normal week before the pandemic. the fucking MESS i was after that. the following week and ding dong and crying with happiness. being dizzy with hyperfixation joy the following day and barely feeling aware of the covid pandemic for the first few days because i was just thinking about jake and amy having a baby. getting through the first few weeks mostly because of b99. admiral peralta and finding out we were having a BOY and not even being disappointed even though the headcanon had been the opposite for years because it was perfect. the iconic b99 quizzes. lights out and mac being born. somehow managing 475 days before season 8, coping together when we got the news about the final season, watching the cast do their final day of filming. the first stream being interrupted by a storm warning and cutting out several minutes because of course. getting to see parents peraltiago and MAC and the insane speed with which those few seconds were giffed. more b99 quizzes. the vow renewal. the finale.

i remember all of it and so much more and as much as my heart is breaking, i’m trying to remind myself that i could have gotten none of this.

brooklyn nine-nine has been such an important part of my life. and it always, always will be, forever. i could have lost it all that night, and instead i got three more years. if i'd known that when i was walking the streets outside my house in the darkness in complete panic, i would have cried with happiness.

so thank you. all of you. for everything. ❤️❤️❤️ for the friendships, the joy, the asks, the debates, the fic response, EVERYTHING. whether we've shared three years or one or less, just know that i'm so grateful.

ehehe I wrote down my thoughts for the caswen secret relationship au that I was blathering about in the tags on one of my incorrect quotes I am. so sorry you have to see this <33

so,,,, basically ricky and ej get together but they decide they don't really want everyone knowing about it just yet, and that's how the Secret Relationship starts.

ashlyn was the first person they told

it was only a week into their relationship but ej knew he needed someone to talk too and he wasn't used to keeping secrets from ashlyn anyway

(she totally knew something was up, ej would start a sentence and then stop and change the subject too often for him to actually have 'forgotten what he was saying')

they would've told big red at the same time but ricky got too nervous and it took him little longer

(ashlyns reaction definitely helped)

((also I imagine big red trying to keep the secret to be something like charles in b99 after rosa told him she was bi))

the next person they told was nini

it was a bit more awkward but they thought she should know separately since it was her ex-boyfriends dating

she took it as well as anyone could and promised to keep it a secret

gina figured it out

she's close friends with both the boys so of course she noticed

(that's what she told ricky and ej but the truth of the matter was she noticed nini acting different and looking at them a lot which led to her also paying more attention and maybe seeing them kiss once)

mike walked in on them kissing

it was really awkward and ricky never wanted to think about it again

(mike thought it was hilarious but made sure to let ricky know that he was happy for him- in the most embarrassing way possible of course, ricky wouldn't say but he was secretly really happy his dad was okay with it)

this leads to ricky having to tell lynne

it happened over text and was somehow even more awkward than with mike, she tried to do the same embarrassing but proud routine but it didn't really come across the same

ricky was happy she tried though and that's all that really matters

ej hadn't meant to tell kourtney

and maybe if he hadn't grown so used to calling ricky his boyfriend as much as possible since they got together it wouldn't have

(it was one of his favourite things now that they were dating, up there with the kissing and the cuddling and the dates and okay, there might not be anything ej didn't like about him and ricky finally dating,,,, but this was still pretty far up there)

it just turned out that saying it as often as he did mean it just sort of... slipped out

kourtney wasn't really sure what to do with it but she smiled and moved on without bringing it up again so they were thankful to her for that

carlos found out next, he asked them straight (🏳️‍🌈?) up what was going on between the two of them

of course, he never would have guessed that they were dating but he had been worried that they were fighting again

this is mainly because of how often they looked at each other and how weird they acted when they had to work together (which was actually because they wanted to hold hands but had to keep reminding themselves that they were a. not out and b. playing their roles)

they end up telling him because he seemed genuinely worried

they also agreed he could tell seb if he believed that he could keep it a secret

(this is way longer than I expected I haven't even got to the part I wanted too djfjd)

no one was really sure if miss jenn knew or not but one time she made a comment and at least 3 of their friends were jumping in with excuses and the others were all suddenly extremely interested in their phones

it was then (and only then) that ricky and ej realised that they had already kind of told everyone in their friendship group

only problem now was that everyone they told didn't know that everyone else knew

this meant they had to somehow let everyone know that everyone knew

so obviously they just started kissing at a party and left it there

(everyone tried to act shocked but soon it was just everyone doing the pointing spiderman meme and trying to figure out who knew last)

fic writer interview

I was tagged by @burninghoneyatdusk @andromedabennet and @mylifeiskara & @arysafics - thank you! 💕

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

I have 58 (15 of which were added this year!).

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

715692 - though about 40% of that is just from my 3 longest fics.

3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

My AO3 page lists 27 fandom tags so I’m just going to list a few, rather all 😂

The fandom I have the most AO3 fics for by far is T100/Bellarke with 22 fics posted for them. Tied in 2nd place are Brooklyn Nine Nine (Jake/Amy + some genfic) and Sanditon (Charlotte/Stringer) with 6 fics.

My current active WIP is a Polin work for Bridgerton and the fandom I most recently started writing for is the Nancy Drew CW show, as I just posted my first Nace fic last week.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Unsurprisingly these are all Bellarke, mostly older stuff with the top 3 being my longest fics.

#1 If The Right One Came Along [modern AU, celebrity!Bellamy, librarian!Clarke, old friends turned FWB, 80k]

#2 The Wonderful Mess We Made [arrowverse-esque superhero AU, superhero!Clarke, lawyer!Bellamy, WIP]

#3 Hearts Are Only Strangers After All [historical, magic and mystery AU where Bellarke are in a marriage of convenience, 88k]

#4 Intimacy [historical regency period AU, arranged marriage, 8k]

#5 birds of a feather [modern AU, clothes sharing, 6k]

I do have to give an honourable mention to my Bridgerton-Polin fic Slow Hands though, which is in 6th place by the tiniest margin. This came as a big surprise to me since BOAF was posted way back in February 2015 and SH has only been up since March 2021!

5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

Yes, I do most of the time. I really enjoy responding to comments, especially when people have taken the time to pick out different aspects of the fic or throw out some theories to what happens next, it’s fun to discuss those things with them - without giving away spoilers of course!

There have been a couple of times in the past in between hiatuses from writing when I felt like maybe I’d left some comments so long it might seem weird to get a response so I have left some of those without responding. Otherwise it’s usually only if comments are odd or rude then I don’t respond - and if it’s very rude I just delete them.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I’m much more of an angst with a happy ending person. Delicate (a Clarke-centric/Bellarke modern AU that’s about her becoming isolated from her friend group) is probably the angstiest thing I’ve written in recent years, but that still had a positive ending.

That said, I do remember writing a couple of fics pre-AO3, that did have angsty endings. The angistest of those is probably a little piece I wrote for the BBC Robin Hood show looking at the characters post s2 (and I fully blame the canon for the angsty feels in that one).

7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?

A few years ago I wrote a crossover fic called The Sculpture, which was for Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Parks and Recreation. It was a one-shot, my idea being what if the squad at the 99 had to deal with Ron and Tammy II’s hijinks (as per the Parks and Rec 3.04 ep). The summary was this quote from the fic:

"Rosa, Jake, you’ll be taking the case. You need to discover if their apparent insatiable sexual chemistry is merely a smokescreen to distract us from the details of the theft, or if…”

“They’re just total horndogs?” Jake supplied.

“Yes, exactly.”

It has some of my lowest stats but I laughed a lot while writing that fic and it made me realise I could write more B99 shenanigans fics so no regrets. 😊

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not quite hate, but I have received some rude comments. As per #5 I tend to just delete them rather than engage, though I was quite tempted to reply to a recent particularly rude one on my current Polin WIP, If I Ever Dared. However, some nice readers had already replied and said what I was thinking so I didn’t have to.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, though it’s a smaller percentage of my writing - on AO3 I have 8 Explicit fics and 4 Mature ones. The fics are probably evenly split between ones where the smut is more of an addition to a plot-focused story and ones where it’s just about the smut, written for kink memes and such.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I had the same thing as Sam in that someone took one of my Bellarke fics and changed the names to suit another fandom and posted it on asianfanfics.com. (Not a website I’d heard of before so thanks to the reader who noticed and messaged me about it!) The person had done it with a bunch of other people’s fics too but the account was removed after being reported. The thing I found most weird was that in their author notes the person was freely saying they hadn’t written it but instead claiming they had ‘converted’ the fics and therefore seemed to think what they were doing was okay! I’m hoping there aren’t a lot of people out there who have the same idea.

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope.

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I have not. When I get a fic idea I usually have a very specific way I want it to go so I can’t imagine feeling comfortable co-writing something like that - however, I do think it might be an interesting experiment/writing exercise with things I’m not as sure about or less attached to. (Not that I have time for experimentation until I get my prompts done lol.)

13. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

Ahh honestly I can’t just pick one. If this is purely based on the quantity of stories I’ve written for a ship then there’s a clear answer, but I get different things out of writing different ships and storylines - and there’s plenty of ships that I love and have never written for as well.

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

So neither of these are posted WIPs but in 2019 & 2020 I started writing two fics: a) T100-Bellarke modern AU secret relationship/co-worker and b) Sanditon-Charlotte/Stringer regency AU take on FWB (I guess secret relationship also applies here lol).

I had them both planned out plus a lot of key scenes written and I still really love the ideas for the fics but I don’t know that I have the energy to write fics as long as these would have been anymore. Tbh they’re both so AU from the original canons that I have been toying with the idea of reworking what I’ve already written into some shorter original pieces just for myself but that’s something to think about next year.

As for posted fics I never like to leave things unfinished if I’ve started sharing them, but I have had to start thinking about the likelihood of me finishing my Bellarke WIPs on AO3 after I’m done with my prompts and tbh I’m not sure! Some were just one short chapter so I’m not that attached to them and I don’t think anyone would notice, but I would really like to finish TWMWM as I posted so much of it already. I do have a pretty detailed outline for the rest of it as well, but the plans were made well before the last few seasons of the show soured my feelings about some of the supporting characters/dynamics in the fic, so I have to decide whether a) I follow through with the original plans and deal with writing more for characters/friendships I’m so-so about now, b) come up with a new plan for it that still works with everything that’s already happens and gets to the Bellarke ending I’m still attached to, or c) leave it unfinished. This is very definitely a problem for next year!

15. What are your writing strengths?

I like writing dialogue, that usually flows quite easily for me. And I also like to think that I’m good at comedy as well as foreshadowing the big moments in medium/longer fics.

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

I’ve always struggled with description, which is why I find fanfic much easier to get started with because everyone knows what the characters and canon locations look like, their backstories, etc. I also sometimes read fics where I feel like the authors phrase things really beautifully, almost lyrically even, and I don’t know how to do that. I feel like my style/phrasing, particularly in modern fics, is quite basic.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I’ve never done it myself. I like it if the translation is included or if the lack of translation is intentional (e.g. both the reader and certain characters don’t know the information and it’s important to the story) but if you’re just supposed to know what it is/you have to go looking somewhere for what the dialogue means it can take me out of the fic.

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

On AO3 it was a one-shot for the show Life as part of the Yuletide small fandoms exchange. In general it was for the old Roswell show, back when that was still on the air but the less said about that fic the better 😂

19. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

This changes a lot, depending on my mood, so I’m going to pick one Bellarke and then one overall.

For Bellarke it’s my Regency slowburn/prank wars AU It Had To Be You - I had a very up and down relationship with this fic partly because I worked on it for a year and partly from lack of response, but enough time has passed now that I can be genuinely happy with what I wrote and ignore the stats.

Overall, atm I’m coming back to Borrow My Heart, my Sanditon-Charlotte/Stringer regency fake engagement fic. It was just such an indulgence of my fave tropes, which is probably why it is the fic of mine I enjoy re-reading the most. 💕

Favourite genre?

I grew up listening to metal and rock, and that's where my heart is. Expecially symphonic metal. But I also listen a a lot more.

Favourite song?

I could say so many songs, if I really have to pick just one I would say Fear Of The Dark by Iron Maiden. That's the song that made me fall in love with music as a kid.

BOOKS

Favourite book genre?

I have a thing for the very first horror/scifi/fantasy that bloomed in gothic litterature at the end of the 1800s. I have no idea if that counts as a genre, but I have always had a thing for that part of litterature, and when I don't know what to read I usually just go for something that falls under this category

Favourite writer?

Neil Gaiman, and many others, but if I have to pick just one that's him. His writing style, the topics, everything is just perfect for my taste in writing.

Favourite book?

I usually say Frankenstein by Mary Shelly cause that is a great way to present the type of story I like. I was also lucky cause I read that book in the perfect moment of my life to connect with it amazingly. At the same time I feel like I am lying because to only pick one single book is so reductive.

Favourite book series?

I have commitment issues, I don't usually go for series. I would like to cheat by saying The Lord Of The Rings, but Tolkien considered it a whole book. Other than that the only full series I have read is Harry Potter. ( I have also read a few books from the Percy Jackson series, which I enjoyed at the time. And last year I started reading The Witcher series, which I am really liking but I am only two books in and I don't know if that would count).

Comfort book?

The Humans by Matt Haig. Anyone who knows me, or has been following me for a while knows about this, amd no I will never shut up about it until everyone has read it. It just gives me hope in a way didn't think was possible. (Also shout out to The Hobbit cause it just makes me feel so good)

Perfect book to read on a rainy day?

Okay so not an easy question. I think I would either go for a short book that I could read in one sitting or a collection of short stories. For the first category my first thought was Tarocchi Magici E Cavallereschi : La Vera Storia Di Rolando by Marcello Simoni. I have no idea if this was translated but It was a great retelling of the medieval story of Rolando I read last year, I'd love to re-read it. For the second category any short story collection by Neil Gaiman. I particularly love Trigger Warning.

Favourite character?

How can you ask me to pick just one? I love the Creature of Frankenstein, I connected so much to that character. But also Herger from Crichton's Eaters of the Dead is a character I love. I adore his positive spirit and his way of seeing life. At this point I should also mention Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit, one of the characters that I feel more close to me.

Favoutie tv/movie genre?

I have no idea. I don't know if I feel different about the genres I watch the most. You know what? I'm gonna go with animated movies because at the end of the day that's always the best option when you don't know what to watch.

Favourite movie ?

There is so many movie. In my family we religiously rewatch a bunch of movies every year, how could I pick just one? I'm gonna go with Young Frankenstein cause that movies is hilarious, and everytime I rewatch it I laugh as if I didn't know all the jokes already.

Comfort movie ?

Honestly it depends on what type of comfort I am looking for. I could go with a couple of my favourite disney classics like The Emperor's New Groove and The Lion King. But also The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings movies. This list could go on for days honestly.

Movie you watch every year ?

The list would be way too long, I am a serial rewatcher. I can say a few I haven't mentioned yet. Big Trouble In Little China, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Wasabi, The 13th Warrior, Lo Chiamavano Trinità and A LOT of other movies.

Favoutie tv show?

The answer to this has changed many many times through the years, but I can confidently say Brooklyn Nine Nine.

Comfort tv show?

Brooklyn Nine Nine, Friends, and I know there's something else but I can't think of any title at the moment.

Most rewatched tv show?

I could say Supernatural, but I really don't want to say Supernatural. I have watched The Mentalist a fair amount of times (the first couple seasons). Now that I think about it I have seen Lie To Me a lot of times aswell. B99 too but I disn't awant to be too repetitive.

5 fave characters?

I don't know if this is supposed to be on tv shows or movies so I will randomly list a few from both. Bilbo Baggings from The Hobbit (yes I am saying it again BUT you don't understand how much I feel like him cause I also both want and not want to go on an adventure). Rosa Diaz from B99, Patrick Jane from The Mentalist, Elizabeth Swan from The Pirates Of The Caribbean. I know it's just four but I can't think of anyone at the moment.

The weather was warm and windy and I don't know why but it felt like I was back to the summer vacation of 2013. I felt so happy and so relaxed just by looking out of my window.
