this image lives in my mind rent free. there's so much here and i really wish the manga had gotten deeper into these two's deeply fucked up relationship bc it's fascinating.

according to wikipedia, yin (the black bit) represents the female/passive/negative principle in nature, while yang (the white part) represents the male/active/positive principle in nature. yin is covert, of the netherworld, the north side of a hill, the south bank of a river, the moon. yang is overt, belonging to this world, the south side of a hill, the north bank of a river, the sun. some other stuff too

the name hyuuga is written with the characters for "sun" and "approach", but the second character can also mean "defy". hinata's first name is just a different reading of the kanji of their surname (which is hilarious but that's not the point), but as a noun "hinata" means "sunny place" or "in the sun". i believe it's also been used to mean "the direction the sun is shining". with the reading "hyuuga", though, the same kanji is also an archaic noun meaning "facing (opposite) the sun". so hinata, the all-but-disowned heiress of the clan, is "a sunny place facing the sun" - both an undeniable part of her family, yet ostracized for her weakness.

neji's name means "screw", or it can refer to a key or a spring in like a watch or a clock or something. there's a few kanji it could be written in, but only one of them caught my eye - 螺旋 is a rarer way of writing "ねじ" (usually just written in hiragana afaik, tho neji the character's name is written in katakana) but the more common reading of 螺旋 is ら(螺)·せん - rasen. if you haven't already caught it, the kanji for rasengan is 螺旋丸­. that's not super relevant, just interesting. anyway, neji who "defies" the main family is one who "faces (opposes) the sun". but at the same time he's its strongest member (or. the one with the most potential. probably most of the jounin hyuuga were stronger than genin neji). so he's "a screw in the sun" - a fundamental piece of the machinery that it may not be able to function without, even if it can't be seen from the outside, like the inner workings of a clock.

idk where i'm going with this i just think these two are fascinating and i would've liked to seen more of them concerning one another

Human Things that Confuse the Non-Humans

I've seen a lot of headcanons on my feed recently that are all about demonic traits and things that seem to scare or facinate MC, but what about the opposite? So I was wondering what sort of typical human things might either unsettle the non-humans, confuse them, or enchant them in some way.

Most of these are based off of personal heasdcanons I already have, so it's very self indulgent.

If ya'll have any other ideas, feel free to share, I'd love to hear them.

Also not proof read cuz I'm writing this at like 5 am due to sleep issues.

Circadian Rythem. I've always wanted to bring up how I headcanon that the Devildom doesn't even follow a 24 hour schedule, since the 24 hour thing is entirely based around the sun, and since they don't have a sun, it makes sense that days would follow some other set rule (I always think that Devildom days are much much longer, hence why MC is caught so many times in canon just taking naps wherever even when Belphie is not around), but that's a headcanon for another time. Anyways, I think the fact that Humans almost need to follow a certain sleeping schedule would totally confuse the demons. Demons only really sleep to stay at their strongest, it's not as vital to them. And the fact that humans can die if they don't get the proper sleep? Totally freaks them out. If MC ever pulls an all-nighter, they all think they're one foot in the grave. Having Solomon and MC getting naturally sleepy more often than the non-humans do might seem pretty adorable at times though.

The fact that human hair does indeed shed. I don't personally think demon or angelic hair would, I feel like hair is something they can change at will within reason (There is a chat with Mammon about him getting his haircut, but he said he was going to change it, so I like to think he made it grow back instantly and cut it like normal again). So I like to think that MC or Solomon leaving strands of hair behind is shocking, because the non-humans only ever associated that trait with animals, but they also find it weirdly cute in a way. The demons and angels do try to ask to comb or brush Solomon's and/or MC's hair from time to time. They feel like they're helping.

Being able to roll (curl? Fold?) your tongue. I think it would be hilarious if despite the millions of other things demons and angels can do, none of them can roll their tongues. And then they get confused too when they discover that not every human can do it either, just certain ones. Solomon can do it and treats it like a party trick.

Allergies. I don't know if it's said in Canon anywhere that demons and angels can have allergies...I hope not because (as much as it sucks) it would make sense for it to just be a human thing. Just the concept entirely would have the non-human's heads spin. What do you mean certain things can just have your body essentially attack itself? And it's different for every human? It can be quite literally anything? (The non-humans would absolutely have a heart attack if they knew about mine)

Human mimicry. I think we as humans just have a natural instinct to mimic or repeat certain things. It's a lot more noticeable with internet culture and memes and references and things, but I think a very human thing to do is repeat or mock things we come into contact with. For example, if we hear an animal noise, we try to repeat it like we're talking to it. If we see something in a weird position, we might try to pose like it, etc. We try to relate to things, which is why personification is so prominent in everything we do. (Like how some of us tell wobbily objects to stay or loud machines to shut up) The non-humans think this is very cute. They don't really do that. The closest thing they might relate to is a current trend, but those pass by rather quickly. Mammon probably thinks we're almost like a bunch of crows.

Emotional control/suppression. Hear me out. It's well known in canon that the brothers blow up easily. They'll fight someone over miniscule things. Even Lucifer, who says he prides himself on his control, loses his temper quite often. And Mammon, while seemingly the best at controlling anger, is very open about all his other emotions. The only two demons that clearly have the best control overall are Barbatos and Diavolo who are the two most powerful demons in the Devildom. It probably takes so much energy and power to keep themselves in check. We hardly ever see that dark aura around them if at all in the game, which seems to give the two this unspoken common respect. As for angels, it was already mentioned once that the angels do have magical methods forcibly controlling emotions, and despite that, I'm sure it takes ages of training and practice to get to the level of "patient perfection" they're supposed to exhibit. Now, humans aren't perfect, and of course, there's a lot of nuance to this like mental illness I won't get into, but generally speaking, we quickly learn how to regulate our emotions or how to supress them for society's sake. At the very least, when we get angry we dont suddenly get surrounded by a dark shadow or shift into a different form. And I like to think this terrifies the non-humans to a degree. They don't know when humans are angry or upset until it's blatantly obvious. They already are off-put by Solomon because they never really know what he's up to. And what if it's not even because he's doing "weird" things, what if it's just because he seems to be so calm all the time and no one knows how to read him? None of them know how to read human body language. There's no aura to see, no puffed up wings, no glowing eyes, no whipping tails. Humans can just...stand there, sometimes with a blank expression, sometimes just staring. It can give even the stronger willed beings the creeps. Bonus points if MC is great at masking too. You mean humans can just...take extreme emotions and tuck them away for later? I'm sure that's an absolutely wild concept. Most of the non-humans are just not capable of that kind of control. Albeit its not always the healthiest option, but just the fact that humans have the willpower to just sometimes choose or force themselves not to feel at all is Barbatos level intimidating.

You Know What? Fuck It. Jealous & Clingy Vox Headcanons

"Angel quit?"

Come on. Yall saw how happy he was at the possibility that Angel quit. How can I not make my silly little- sometimes fucked up bcuz look at them- headcanons?!

-Vox and Val aren't dating, but Vox would very much like for them to be an item, but either doesn't know how to voice it or just thinks what they have right now is fine. That doesn't mean that he won't get a little (a lot)! jealous when Val flirts with other people. But since they're on the same power level, he can't really do anything about it, so he just becomes quiter and does other things. Check his phone, wait it out, be a petty little bitch in the corner, etc, etc

-When Val is done flirting with them and him and Vox are alone again, Vox has one of two reactions; be extra physical or affectionate or be a petty little bitch. It really depends on his mood. When he becomes extra affectionate, he'll cuddle up to Val or make out with him or they'll probably just fuck honestly. When he's being a petty little bitch, he'll sit there like a toddler and mope, sometimes ignoring Val. Val thinks both of this behavior is adorable either way, and sometimes flirts with people in front of Vox just to get a reaction out of him (read this person's comic to know what I mean, I love it sm)

-He's a needy, touch-starved bottom. Ya'll saw the way Vox pulled Val into a position where his arms would be wrapped around him at the beginning of their dance (and Vox arching his back-), right? Y'know how after Val kisses someone he leaves his weird red spit behind? That appeared on Vox's mouth when Vox started singing Stayed Gone. Like, "Hey babe, can you give me a good luck kiss before I sing a disstrack for my ex?". He wants/needs physical affection so much and so bad

-I now also headcanon that he's embarrassed to ask for it in a romantic way, so he only does it 'accidently' or to fit the situation (like how he pulled Val in that position in the dance)

-Valentino has merch of himself and Vox bought some of it

-Yes, he stalks Val. That's actually canon

- Vox has so many cameras pointed at Val. Val is aware of this and sometimes performs for the camera in various ways. He honestly doesn't care surprisingly, since Vox isn't really gonna do anything with the footage other than be a voyeuristic little freak

- Despite Vox's clinginess, Val can also be incredibly clingy and it can get on Vox's nerves. He'll get pissy when Vox won't hold him or give him attention and Vox will be annoyed, but when Val stops being prissy, Vox will then give him affection. (Litterally just "not talk to me I angy" "Ok"*leaves* "wait no, come back")

I really need to vent about how much I like Cal and Merrin's dynamic in Jedi: Survivor cause they've quickly become probably my favorite canon pairing in the franchise.

I absolutely love that this relationship is built on the basis of friendship, respect, and a genuine mutual understanding of each other. From gameplay comments and conversations, Cal is very clearly so enamored with Merrin and literally everything about her. I know it's become a bit of a joke how clearly into her he is but he just thinks she's the most incredible being in the entire galaxy and it's honestly the sweetest thing. The writers could have very easily made his connection to Merrin a weakness or had it where it made his struggle with the darkness harder but I adore that they allowed him to be completely smitten with her and presented it as a strength. It's refreshing not only in Star Wars but in media in general, at least in my opinion. Love being presented as a positive asset is something so deeply missing in media nowadays - especially romantic love. Far too often in this day and age, love is presented as a weakness or something that will only bring you down, so I respect the fuck out of this writing.

Oops, this got really, really long so I'm putting the rest under a cut. It's kind of spitfire, so I apologize if it feels random.

I love how their first kiss is Merrin basically making a split-second decision where she realizes she doesn't want to die without kissing him at least once even if it runs the risk of making things awkward should they survive. Is it cliche as fuck? Absolutely, but it works so well in this instance. Cal being so dumbfounded, gawking at her like a fish, trying to process what the hell just happened that BD has to remind him they're literally about to die is the best thing too.

I appreciate that Cal is so obviously hesitant about giving into any sort of romantic feelings for Merrin because, of course, he would be due to his upbringing. He's pushing so hard against it to the point that he's even completely reluctant to so much as discuss it with Bode when they're on the Lucrehulk. Personally, I don't think Cal is oblivious to their potential feelings for each other. I've never been a huge fan of treating Cal as completely naive. He still might be a bit emotionally stunted, sure but he's lived 10 years outside of the Jedi Order at this point. I think he's hesitant to talk about it because first of all, it's really none of Bode's business but also, if he talks about it, he has to admit it, and if he admits it, that makes it real, and if it's real... well fuck, now he has to do something about it either way which is exactly what he's trying to avoid. I think he's trying to stay as neutral about it as he can until he gets to a point in the story/his arc where he decides he actually wants or feels ready to make a decision. Bode almost gets it out of him too before they're interrupted. The progression of Bode's questioning during that mission is something I actually find really interesting but that's a different topic.

Many people have pointed this out but Cal smiling so brightly while Merrin is clearly freaking the fuck out of Bode is just the cutest thing. Not only because he finds such humor in her scaring the shit out of people for fun when he of all people knows it's a running joke but he also goes along with the joke any chance he gets. He does this even when she's not around. People will be freaked out by her and he still plays along and it's not even like, "Yeah, I know, she's fucking scary bro," it's more like, "Yeah, I know, she can wake the dead, isn't it amazing how scary she is!" Someone else already pointed this out in another post but that feels almost more intimate than any kiss they share. His attraction to her encompasses all sides of her including those that many people find incredibly terrifying and I find that so endearing, he wouldn't ask her to change for anything. He's the only person who genuinely isn't freaked out by her in the slightest but not only that, he finds that side of her to be so incredible. Also, Cal being so blase with Bode about his obvious attraction to Merrin a mission prior and then having the most blatant sexual tension with her in front of Bode in the next scene is peak comedy, I don't care what anybody says. Like, Cal, honey, you just spent the entire previous mission trying to convince Bode (and yourself) there's nothing there and/or you're not pursuing it, so you're not doing yourself any favors by looking at her like that, standing that close to her, and speaking to her with the cadence of a lover bro.

I love that the second Cal walks onto the Mantis after killing Rayvis, she instantaneously picks up on the fact that something's wrong. Literally instantaneously. You can see her face drop the moment she sees him. She just knows something happened. Her ability to read him insanely well is something that is introduced very early on in the game, most noticeably in the campfire scene, and it stays consistent over the course of the story. The following conversation they have is honestly one of the best moments between them in the entire game. It's this type of conversation I've been wanting to see with a Jedi and their potential lover since Revenge of the Sith. He is so open with her even in a somewhat roundabout way about his genuine fear of losing himself and while the conversation is not explicitly about their relationship, the implication is still there and she 100% picks up on it, especially since he wonders aloud why Santari didn't see the change in Dagan before it was too late. Instead of shaming him for his reservations or calling it ridiculous or anything else she could have said at this moment, she instead decides to possibly help curb those fears and give him some comfort regarding it. She goes on to basically tell him in so few words she knows what she's signing up for and is willing to cross those bridges with him if they come. It's a great difference between Cal and Dagan. Though it's never outright stated that Dagan and Santari were in love, I feel like it's... pretty heavily implied, or at least he was definitely in love with her (was I the only one who read it that way??) but whereas Dagan demands that Santari talk him away from the darkness and seems to almost expect her to, Merrin herself plainly offers to do it with no prodding on Cal's part. It doesn't seem to be a burden Cal wanted to put on her, not something he was inherently expecting of her but she willingly offers, it is her choice, she wants to carry that burden with him. While she does seem maybe slightly annoyed by his hesitancy regarding their relationship to each other, she is also so incredibly patient with him while he's stewing over what he wants to do. It's beautiful. As a side note, "A shared dream is not so easy to wake from," is such an amazing line. Seriously, I want merch with that quote on it.

I liked that going through with the relationship was Cal's choice in the end. Merrin didn't push it, she didn't pressure it. She let him bring it up and come to her when he was ready and if that meant potentially being rejected by a man she very clearly adores, so be it, and I have no doubt she would've respected that choice if that's what he'd wanted. I know a lot of people seem to think he only makes this decision due to Bode's questions earlier but it really seems to be a combination of multiple things that lead to this. Bode picking his brain definitely got him thinking about it, maybe more than he wanted to, but I do think the other big part of Cal being willing to go forward with it at this moment is his confrontation with Dagan that, while an illusion, did cause him to come to grips with his own mortality in a way. "How does it feel knowing you're about to die. That your life meant nothing." As Cal says, Dagan uses an extremely powerful force hallucination based on fear here, so while losing himself to the darkness might scare him, his life being completely meaningless is what he seems to fear the most. Cal's journey throughout Survivor encompasses many things but one of them revolves around feeling aimless and finding a purpose, preferably outside of being a hired weapon that will surely and slowly consume him. It's what everyone consistently tells him: find a home, settle down, embrace happiness because it's fleeting, the path you're on is not healthy and will consume you otherwise...etc. His decision here to give in to his romantic attraction to Merrin is a culmination of all of these interactions and conversations he's had throughout the story, how they've influenced his line of thinking, and him coming to his own conclusions regarding what he personally wants and at this moment, when things are finally, calm and everyone is in a good place with a plan going forward, he personally decides there's no point in living up to the expectations of the Jedi when the Order doesn't exist anymore and wants to see where this could go.

I love the fact that when Merrin witnesses Cal's darkness in the ISB, it's made abundantly clear that she's just as afraid of losing him as he most likely is of losing her. I do think a major reason why she was able to talk him down at the moment is that he fundamentally understands what it feels like to lose everything and everyone, your entire livelihood. That is what they first bonded over and it's something that keeps them bonded in the saddest, yet most profound way and he would never want to add himself to the list of people she's lost. She's also doing exactly what she said she would. In an instance where again, she reads him like a fucking book, she can tell just from his responses on the intercom that he's losing himself and is guiding him back. She immediately went to rescue him as she says. No question, no argument, nothing, she simply does it. She made him a promise and she kept it and in that moment, he promises that she won't lose him, he won't allow it. This is a fundamental difference between Anakin and Padme's dynamic and Cal and Merrin's. While Anakin's love for Padme quite famously ends up extremely selfish in an "I would lose myself to ensure you're not ripped away from me" type of way, Cal and Merrin's dynamic is leaning towards a more selfless, "I won't allow myself to be lost because I can't let that happen for your sake," type of way and god damn it, I love it.

There are several interactions they have in gameplay that I'm lowkey peeved weren't included in cutscenes and one of them is when Cal returns to the Mantis after all but demolishing the ISB, they have this really short but great interaction where Merrin says that if he ever feels that way again, he needs to tell her. She doesn't even ask him to do it, she all but demands it, "If you feel that way again, you will tell me." She's demanding communication from him regarding the darkness and he doesn't fight this demand at all. He agrees to respect this request and I fucking love that from both of them. I will genuinely be kinda upset if we don't get a moment like that in the next game.

I like how their kiss after they've successfully navigated the abyss is kind of their first kiss inverted but instead of "omg we might die, I need to kiss you" it's more "holy shit, we survived, I need to kiss you," but instead of Merrin initiating, now it's Cal. I'm probably reading too much into that but whatever, it's cute.

This isn't about any one part in particular but I do love that it looks like the headcanon so many people had regarding Merrin most likely being quite physically affectionate is turning out to be true.

So cater obviously has a social media addiction, I imagine he uses social media as an escape. He's always been in his sisters shadow, constantly bossed around and basically not having his own self. He pretends to be happy and pretends to be fine on social media, but he's not fine. He's depressed and doesn't know what he's going to do with his life because he's always had someone guiding him (wanted or not), he later extends this persona onto real life because he felt that "the people love the fake me more than the real me....". The only time he's genuinely happy is in the music club. Over time, this builds up and eventually... he overblots.

Rook

So Rook, we know him as this french fuck that's so positive and compliments like it's the last thing he'll do. But I imagine that it's a lie. All the compliments, all the things that make Rook...Rook. are a lie. He compliments everyone to be seen, he's used to being hidden, to not being noticed so he can catch his prey so he uses the overly done compliments as a cover up for his need for validation and attention. He gets so caught up in this creepy persona that it derails into him needing someone to latch onto so he can just get a visual on what he wants, eventually it becomes too much and all the need, the wants and everything Rook wanted in the beginning turns on him because he realizes that everyone just sees him really as a freak. And all that stress and fear of not getting the validation and being seen. He overblots.

Jack always wants to be better, to be the best he can be. But what if it's a cover-up for his fear of never being enough, I don't think it's ever confirmed where Jack lives, but we do know he doesn't have many friends. I assume it's because he's a big guy, and they're scared. But his younger sibling, the pups, if you will. They're little. They can be picked on. I imagine the siblings probably get bullied, and Jack defends them. Jack's fear of never being enough stems from him possibly never being enough to protect those he cares about. His admiration for Leona probably is a visual for what he wants to be, Leona protecting his team in that game is what Jack wants for the people he cares for. But wanting to protect can get too much for someone. Good things can be bad. And all this fear of protecting them and being the best so he won't disappoint anyone becomes too much. He gets too stressed... and he overblots.

Sebek

Sebek is loud. We know this, and we also know that he's loud because he absolutely adores Malleus and wants everyone to know about him, but what does this praise stem from? Let's not focus on that and instead his half-fae blood. We know he chooses to be perceived as fully fae as he deems humans "weak," but what if it's a cover-up for his shame and doubt. Shame that he is "weak" in comparison to full fae, something he (as far as i know) has only been shown with lilia and malleus, two people that had centuries to get as strong as they are and doubt because his grandfather, someone he looks up to was someone that hated humans with a passion. After a while this simply builds up, all the shame and doubt finally reaching its limit and the minute he is shown that he is enough, he is not weak, he is not any less of a fae just because of his blood. Combine those emotions with the negative ones, and it's simply too much for a body... and he overblots

Jade

Jade leech, the calculating and more secretive of the tweels. But why? Why keep such a thing as his unique magic secret? Why keep anything secret? He and floyd are described as long and scary in their merforms. And we know people who bully based on looks exist. What's to say the tweels weren't bullied because of how "scary" they are? I feel Floyd would simply brush it off, whereas it would affect jade more. Bullied to the point that he feels it would be better to keep things hidden, this only is being strengthened by Azul's behavior. After Azul's overblot, I feel like there would be a dent in their relationship with Azul, especially on jades end. It's slightly shown that azul trusts jade a bit more than floyd, so a dent in that relationship would cause an issue. And while Jade could be used to that, it can still become too much. The feeling of being locked out from one of his best friends and the after effects of seeing said friend overblot becoming too much...and he overblots.

Ominis could feel people staring. Over the years, he'd become well-versed in that strange extra sense, recognizing the slight prickle on the back of his neck. But tonight he couldn't care less.

He didn't care if every pair of eye in the whole of Hogwarts rested on him. All he cared about were the familiar uneven footsteps coming towards him.

A wide grin formed on his face as the delicate scent of her lavender perfume hit him. He reached out a hand, and without the slightest hesitation, she took it.

The crowd seemed to disperse a bit as the two walked toward the ballroom. It wasn't as if he hadn't heard the slight whispers around the castle when word got out he'd asked her to the Yule Ball---Ominis was always one to keep up with the latest in school gossip, and he wasn't surprised that the news was something of note to his peers. For some reason, the fact that the two of them---the blind boy and the girl with a limp---were going to the ball together caused some sort of stir. He'd heard faint whispers asking how they'd be able to dance, or if they'd just stay sitting for all of it. Would she even dress up, if she didn't get the satisfaction of her date admiring it?

None of it mattered to him.

Instead, the only thing that mattered was her and the way her arm looped through his, the bare skin of her forearm feeling warm and inviting as she led him.

He leaned his head closer to hers. "You look beautiful, by the way."

She chuckled a bit. "And how do you know?"

"I've always known," he said simply. "Besides, I can feel all the heads that turn toward you when we walk by. I'd dare say they're jealous."

They stopped near a table as couples around them moved to positions to dance. "If they envy anything, it's the lucky chance I have to be your date," she said, letting her arm fall from his elbow to trace down and grasp his hand.

He grinned. "You flatter me, darling."

"I try."

He gave her hand a squeeze as the music began to swell, the first dance beginning. "Shall we?" he asked.

"I thought you'd never ask."

She helped guide him to an empty space on the floor, his wand tucked into his pocket. He had no use for it---she was the only guide he needed tonight. Their arms raised into position, and he took a moment to revel in the way his hand felt on her waist. Then they began.

They moved like two cogs in an intricate machine---as if they'd been carefully crafted to fit together. With the gentle pressure of her hand, she expertly kept them out of harms way. He never had to doubt a step, trusting completely that she'd be his sight. In turn, his hands kept her firm. He led each step with a grace so contagious that it spread to her effortlessly. Each turn and movement was perfect, making up for any weakness in her leg with an outpouring of support.

There was no question that they were the best dancers on the floor.

People were staring again---he could feel it. And once again, he didn't care. In fact, he reveled in it. Damn their doubts and their whispers. They were perfect together. It was time they recognized what a blind man had seen all along.

His heavy arms and legs are when they're tangled around you can cut off circulation, and you get bedsores from being forced to lay flat in the same position for hours.

Belphegor thinks it's a little quirky you sniff his hair. You definitely learned that behaviour from him, but there is no way your little nose can pick up scents like a demons. To your nose, it probably doesn't smell like much at all. Are you just doing it because you saw him do it? Are you mocking him? Or trying in your own weird way to bond? He's not delusional enough to think you're imprinting on him, Belphie knows you're just an adult human. But he doesn't mind really, he just likes teasing you for being a weird little freak for sniffing him back after he sniffs you.

It's not like you're not going to get bored when you're stuck under him all day. And it's not like he's going to let you roam around without him. It's a neat little compromise, even if you don't know how to negotiate.

Authors Notes: I just watched Smile and honestly this is just a description of how I think the different Lockwood & Co characters would react to horror movies. I personally absolutely adore them (and this might be a little bit more of a description of Smile and my personal favourite movie, A cure for wellness, but dw about that) so I wanted to put the characters into the same position. Also this is a little short, sorry for that whoops

It had taken you some time to get the others in on your idea. A horror movie night, of course only as bonding experience and totally not because you wanted to freak Lucy and Lockwood out with your taste in cinematic media. George had immediately been in on the idea, he loved horror just as much as you did, though he was the type to overanalyze and tell the main character what to do, while you rather yelled at them for being a stupid idiot. You knew Lucy and Lockwood both disliked horror. 'We have horror every day, why would I watch that.' was Lucy's excuse, Lockwood simply shrugged and didn't get on the topic again. Sometimes you teased him that he was just scared, by the look on his face every time you joked about it you'd almost think you were right.

Yet now, after days of slight manipulation, the four of you were neatly sat on the couch while you started with some lighter movies - in your opinion at least. Nothing too gory, nothing too crazy. You and George were even able to laugh at how idiotic some scenes were - old school horror movies was always a good start into nights like these. Lucy loudly exclaimed she was more than disgusted by the scenes of blood spill and the usual amount of stabbing, Lockwood on the other hand kept quiet, staring at the screen with a blank expression. »I think they're ready, don't you, my horrendous friend?« George spoke after you lot had finished the second movie. »Ready for what?« Lucy asked, her voice wavering slightly. She seemed concerned, and heaven knew she should be. »You think? Lucy looks like she's about to pass out and Lockwood hasn't said anything the entire time, maybe we should just go to bed–« You started, now worrying about your friends wellbeing, as well as the fact that neither of you all could actually take another late night. »Oh come on, hit us with it so we get it over with.« Lockwood interrupted you, sighing loudly and shifting in his seat ever so slightly. He seemed annoyed, almost as if he couldn't stand this entire conversation. You shrugged. »If that's what the boss wants. Sure.« You moved swiftly to put in the DVD.

Lucy had to leave the movie halfway through. Even George seemed somewhat put off by how it played out. You were the only one in the room that had already watched the movie before. It was one of your favourites, a horror movie that had actually succeeded in making you want to turn it off with how god-awful it was. Not in the bad production way though, in the oh fuck what am I even watching kind of way. Lockwood still seemed unfazed, but that was natural Lockwood fashion, by the way he sat and clenched his fist you knew he was on edge. He only had that look whenever something disgusted and frightened him deeply, like that one time he beat Lucy in Monopoly and she freaked out on him saying she'd quit her job. You were just waiting for a particular scene to play out. The one scene that almost made you hide behind your pillow like a little kid watching horror for the first time.

»I think I'm gonna throw up.« Lucy was stood in the doorway, half watching the movie, half watching the way you bounced up and down like a kid. The scene was brutal, with way too many tubes down throats and way too many eels in human bodies for her taste, so she tried her best not to watch. The sounds alone made the hair on her neck stand up. Lucy could see the way you clinged onto Lockwoods arm – who was still unmoving and actually looked like he was about to fall asleep – repeatedly glancing over at the taller boy to make sure he was still watching. »Good job Luce, you just ruined my popcorn for me with an image of you throwing up.« George sighed, completely oblivious to what was going on right beside him. He had hoarded all the snacks – he seemed to be stress eating – and stared at the screen like his eyes were glued to it. Lucy would never understand how he could like watching people get torn to shreds. She once saw him watch some other movie, you beside him, and he was rambling on about how the Main character would've escaped getting their foot sawn off. Like it was the most normal thing to talk about that! She shook her head, the images of the movies still visible behind her closed eyes. Yup, Lucy Joan Carlyle was getting no sleep tonight whatsoever. »You know where the toilet is Luce.« You mumbled, way too lost in the movie and the way Lockwood batted his eyes whenever something happened on screen. She groaned. »Lockwood, the two don't get it. George is snacking away like he'll die if he doesn't and they haven't let go of you for five minutes since that awful movie started, please get the two to stop this.« Lucy begged. The walls were thin inside the house and with the volume the three of you were watching she was able to hear every fucking thing up in the attic. Lucy knew it was your favourite by the way your eyes had sparkled the entire time you were watching. Though maybe that could've been because you stared at Lockwood for the better half.

Minutes later Lucy met before mentioned boy in the kitchen, both getting a glass of water before bed. »You liked the movies the two showed?« Lucy asked, raising her eyebrows in question as she remembered how unbothered the slightly older boy had looked. »God's no I was about to pass out if you hadn't stopped them.« He huffed. Now that he had mentioned that, Lockwood did look a little pale, well, paler than he usually was. »Don't tell them though. They shoved their favourite. They told me after you were gone, all the little details and everything.« He looked out the kitchen window, a small smile on his face. »Ew, you're looking like a lovesick puppy. Disgusting.« Lucy joked, softly nudging Lockwood as she put down her finished glass. Lockwood chuckled in response yet he didn't look at Lucy. »Maybe I am.« he simply hummed, grinning to himself.

Today Not Quite Dead turns 365 days old!

A little over a year ago, feeling very disheartened and a little depressed, I decided to take the story about vampires I'd been piddling away with in the background of making Spirit Box Radio and turn it into a single narrator audio drama.

When I did that, I came up with a bunch of anti-rules:

I'd only work on episodes when I felt like it would be fun to do so

I'd make decisions about the story based on what was most emotional to me in the moment, rather than letting myself get stuck in the process of writing something with very restrictive plot goals

If I wasn't asking myself if I'd gone too far at the end of every episode's writing process, I wasn't going far enough

And so, the show was born.

This approach is radically different than pretty much every other writing project I've completed, and that's by design. At the time I started making NQD, I'd faced a pretty big set back with SBR and was struggling to work on it at all. I had a very clear vision for the show which at times made writing it very challenging and restrictive as an experience, and when I was faced with altering that vision, though I'm now convinced it worked out better that way anyway in hindsight, it was really difficult. It made me really rethink my entire approach to working on audio drama.

Writing NQD this radically different way was really good for me. I felt excited and giggly most episodes, and it was the first time I started to feel partially confident about my vocal performances. I noticed it was having a positive impact not just on my relationship with the writing on SBR, but how I felt about its quality overall. By working on something so different that required such a different energy, I came to value SBR more, and by the end of the show's run, I was in love with it the way I was at the beginning.

There's also the fact that I absolutely LOVE vampires. I always have. They're my favourite horror monsters, for reasons which are probably obvious to those of you who have listened to the show. They are almost indistinguishable from humans at a glance, they can live among us undetected, for the most part, but they are NOT human. They're different in importnat and unresolveable ways. As someone who has always struggled to fit in, this has forever resonated with me, and for most of my adult life, I've had an unserious vampire project or two being whittled away at in the background.

There were also some problems with how I wrote season one. NONE of the dates, times or ages lined up properly, and I frequently found I'd written myself into very boring, unfunny plot corners I'd have to spend a lot of time reasoning my way out of, which is no fun at all.

Something interesting, but not really good OR bad, is that LOTS of people found the show felt very trans to them, though none of the characters are transgender in canon. I'd not written the show this way intentionally, but it was very cool to see that other people had found this thematic thread buried in the story.

By the time I got to the end of Season One, I had to admit to myself that despite my best intentions, I had written a show with plot and themes. This was entirely an accident, but I was pretty happy to realise it. I also found that this show, something I'd written primarily for myself, had a real audience. This was a delightful thing to realise. You're all freaks, and I adore that for you, and I hope you're incredibly proud of yourselves, and I mean this entirely seriously. I am a freak too, otherwise I would not be able to write the show at all.

Anyway. We're over halfway through Season Two now, and my approach to the show has changed quite a lot. Though it has remained a project that is predominantly vibes-led, I've also found it exciting to spend some serious time thinking about the show's arcs and future and really indulging in making it As Much As Possible. As you will see over the next several episodes, that is So Much, actually.

On this year's first anniversary of Not Quite Dead, I find myself once again disheartened and depressed, because it's the slow slide into the long nights of winter, and as much as I love the cold and the dark, I struggle with my mental health year-round and this particular change of seasons is the one I feel is the hardest. But I'm also damned proud of this show, and not despite it's silliness, but BECAUSE of it. It's made me a stronger character writer, a better performer, and it's been a disgusting amount of fun.

Here's to another year of this ridiculous show about vampires.

The "Hear that? ... No Nightingales" literally broke my heart- cuz I remember reading some meta about it somewhere on here and when I was thinking about it to myself after watching, I could only think of how it sort of symbolised then end of their relationship and that broke me, ok? Especially when the Bentley played A Nightingale Sang In Berkely Square instead of its usual Queen- AND THEN HOW CROWLEY PAUSED FOR A MINUTE TO LISTEN TO IT? NO. LITERALLY STOP, OK. Sanji and his rat sprinkles in his pocket. She's always on his shoulder. It's his baby that rat is his child???? He makes miniature dishes and put someone little plates for her to eat like a little person??? Everyone seems to like sprinkles except for Zoro. They don't interact with each other. Chopper will translate what she's saying sometimes and She really says anything positive about him. (They will warm up to each other and will slowly start tolerating each other's existence, but that's it)

It took a while for Nami to get used to it but she warned up eventually now she picks her up and pets her like normal. Luffy tho he is not normal about it, he will put her on his head and have her chill under his hat. He will put his hat on top of her trapping her and watches her try to escape. He will grab her by her paws and make her dance or use her as an action figure or something. Sanji always ends up yelling at him saying that she's not a toy.

Robin let's sprinkles sit on the table next to her when she's reading. One time they couldn't find her and sanji was freaking the fuck out. They looked for hours, turns out she climbed into Franky's stomach chamber and took a nap, he put a little pillow in there after. Her other hiding space is Brooke's hair it's a nice little pillow, she also climbed in and out of his eye sockets it's adorable for everyone on the ship but terrifying for everyone else. Jinbe is so gentle with her he's so worried he's going to harm her he bought her a little robe like his. She's so cute

The new member of the red hair pirate is tartar sauce. A 16 lb sun bleached tuxedo cat around 2 or 3 years old, he hates almost every one he's come across. He was the only cat that cost 1 berrie, when given to yasopp he was attached instantly. He loves tartar sauce and tartar sauce loves him. He's on his shoulder all the time he's on his lap whenever he sits and on his chest waking him up every morning. He makes the sweetest little noises when running up to him after an adventure with his crew. With the other crewmates it's indifference or hatred. He hates shanks the most (birds also dislike shanks. They're just certain animals that don't fuck with him for some weird reason) he can't go near him without being swiped at. He doesn't like uta either (because why not) she forgot something on the ship once she went back to get it and ended up being trapped in a room with tartar sauce every time she tried to move closer to the door to leave he would make the worst howling and hissing noise. She was stuck for 45 minutes.

He's very indifferent to Benn. He will walk past him ignoring his presence even if he makes noises to get his attention he doesn't care. Benn doesn't try to pick him up or pet him he just knows it's not a good idea. He loves buggy when he met him shanks tried to warn him about the ship's cat. All buggy head was cat and was on the prowl for it. He cradles tartar sauce like a baby petting his stomach while he purrs he's such a sweetheart why are you so scared of him? He likes to play with the frills on his hat and will head butt his nose.

Other people tartar sauce likes or tolerates is usopp He smells like yasopp not just like him but he's similar in sent, he's associated with him somehow so he's fine. He will sit on his lap occasionally but there are no pets, with sanji he exists and he will allow him to be in his presence as long as he doesn't try to touch him or look at him for too long. He likes zeff (I love shipping no matter how "cracked" it is) he can pet him and give him food that's all he's allowed to do with his hissing. Zeff thinks he's cute very picky and mean but cute nonetheless. He wishes he would leave when they want to be alone it's awkward having him there staring at them It kills the mood.

Yasopp was terrified he wouldn't like him and would attack like he did with his other potential partners but it worked out. he's allowed in the restaurant If someone has something to say they can fucking leave or get clawed that's up to them. He's not allowed in the kitchen but will roam around the baratie hissing at people. He hisses at the marines that come in the most out of everyone.

The straw hats have a rat and the red hairs have a cat they're both looking for the one piece. It is quite literally a cat and mouse game

These are all so accurate and cute 😭😭 I want them to have a pet rat so bad now. They'd love her so much. And Yasopp with his cat is just so fucking hilarious, help. Maybe the One Piece was the pets we found along the way.

OKAY SO. Chapter 8 art to start.

This is just GORGEOUS. And heartbreaking. So, so heartbreaking. You got all of the emotions that I wanted to convey in the scene, and I am OBSESSED with how you draw expressions. GOSH the tears in Papyrus's sockets and the way his brow bones and teeth are positioned are just. PAIN. He's so hurt and in shock. Like, I can FEEL his panic and shock and hurt from this.

And the COLORS!??!?! DAMN. Just the spots of red for Frisk's SOUL and the blue for Undyne's spears just really makes it pop and just... ties it together so well. It's so VISCERAL.

AND THE POSING. GOSH Papyrus's right (his right, our left??) hand DESTROYS ME. I cannot look away. Just... how did you convey in just one little hand how terrified he is to touch them? Because holy heck he just screams "I don't know where to touch or what to do without breaking them more."

And Frisk's expression. They're so HURT and gosh just. The shading over their eyes and their injuries... just. YOU GOT THE SPEAR THAT SKIMMED THEIR CHEEK!?!??! THIS IS PAIN. /pos I'M STILL FREAKING OUT OVER THIS.

ALSO THE INJURIES ON THEIR SIDE! IT'S ALSO THE Same one I gave them in story!!! This is brilliant, you are brilliant. Stars, I'm never going to emotionally recover from this. ALSO ALSO I adore the way you weight the lines. And the BLOOD. There's not a lot but it's so well done.

Gosh, I'm going to cry seeing Frisk's little hand in Papyrus's.

Everything about this. I adore. SO much. It's just got pain and tension and heartbreak and disbelief and desperation in every line. HHHHHHHHHH.

AND THE CHAPTER 19 ART!!! GOSH. MY HEART.

(I keep wanting to call it chapter 20 and I have no idea why.)

HHHGH. This whole thing. Just. This small strip of comic has the most palpable tension I've ever seen in a comic. The use of the exclamation marks and ellipses just really really really shows first the shock and then the pause before it all goes to hell.

And DAMN I love the angles and the poses so much. AND THE EXPRESSIONS. Holy heck I love the way you do expressions. Frisk's little smile and wave contrasting with Papyrus's slightly open mouth and brow bone quirked just so to show his shock/worry/distress right before it all hits him.

And then the close up panels on Papyrus and Undyne's faces- just-

HHHHH. The shadows across their eyes and the drops of sweat just. It makes it so that I'm really just. Feeling just as much tension as they probably are. Undyne clearly knows she's in a bit of deep shit, and Papyrus is just... processing. (and is not having a fun time while he takes in the sight in front of him.)

Also just. I love the way you do Undyne's fins. And Frisk's hair. And Undyne and Frisk in general. Also Papyrus's scarf and face and-

Okay I just love how you draw these characters so much. I wish to consume your art. GOSH I love your style.

And I also love how you have Papyrus's hand on the door and his pose. It really helps build the scene and to see that he had JUST opened the door.

Also I love the slight angle on the close up of Undyne since it's so dynamic. This whole thing is incredibly dynamic. It's a series of three still frames, but it doesn't feel like it. It feels almost like a scene from a video. They just flow into each other so well. You are just. So skilled at what you do.

And the line weights and the shadings and just- I will consume. I wish to consume. Entirely.

Thank you so so so much for making these wonderful pieces and allowing me to share them. I will never emotionally recover. The death sounds I made when I first saw them.... (You missed the worst of them when I saw the second one.)

It took me like a solid - 6 minutes(?) after I saw the first piece to stop vibrating and spinning and wheezing enough to type a response.

Also, cuz I saw someone ask this once and now I'm always curious- what was your favorite things about each of these that you made? Like what you did with the pieces. (Only if you want to answer of course!)

I'm more than happy to spread positivity and love, and I'll totally ignore the audacity to only give me 5 blogs and just do more hehe

I'm gonna start with @ruinedmyself because Kas was one of the first people to talk to me when I ventured into the spn fandom, and they've done nothing but make me feel incredibly welcomed <3 I love our silly little chats and also the pain we inflict on each other regularly. We really do share one (1) braincell, and I wouldn't want it any other way. You've got such a fantastic grip on Sam, on his badass-ery but also his softer and goofier side, and I scream excitedly whenever I see I got a reply from you!

No Sam without Dean, obviously, so I gotta yell about @bloodsalted a bit. Dixon is an extremely friendly person, and I'm still glad I managed to sweet-talk force you into joining me in hell. Or heaven, I suppose, is the better word, because our interactions are truly GREAT. Whether it's sexy times or angsty shit, every reply is magnificent and makes me giggle. You write Dean in all facets that make his character so lovable: his fears and passions and his silly times and also his anger. I love him to pieces!

Who doesn't love the king of hell? Cas, probably, but I adore every interaction with @murderdeals because it enables me to use all the pissed-off Cas icons. When you write Crowley, I can hear Mark yell into my ear. And honestly, I would have never guessed that Cas and Cain could become such good buddies, and yet they somehow ended up being the bestest bee bros, and that's largely due to your fantastic writing and your excellent grip on a character that can easily be branded the villain without second-guessing.

@singersalvaged should always be included in my rant about lovable people because she's just so chill to talk to! A truly great person who has an amazing view of Bobby Singer and writes him in a way that makes me believe the guy is standing behind me muttering idjit whenever I read a reply. And Allie! Let me gush about Allie, who's Cas' weed friend and brothel companion, and every single interaction just makes me howl with laughter. They're absolutely unhinged and dumb, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

While Crowley makes Cas want to eat glass, @eyeless-smiles makes him want to tear his own ears off because Corinth is such a fucking asshole (affectionate), a True Nightmare, and I love seeing him annoy Cas in every single paragraph. It's just hilarious, and they never hold their muse back, which is refreshing these days!

Cas loves to steal kids (just look at Jack), so it didn't take long for him to steal @innerwar 's Homelander when he was still a child with Vought. And honestly, I just adore this verse and you, friend? It's so funny and yet also sad, and I'm just so unbelievably happy that Homie gets a better life with this and that Cas gets to be a Dad again, and your writing is just SO FANTASTIC and catches Homelander's young voice brilliantly. 

I gotta yell about @nightmdic really loudly for a second because she is a FREAKING MAGNIFICENT OC and both Cas and I love her to pieces. She's kind and nice and helps Cas through his forced humanity without finding him (too) weird, and Paige just casually managed to write one of my favorite OCs here on Tumblr with her eye for detail and well-chosen words 

And last but not least, a big shoutout to @bleakfated who writes a lot of different spn muses (among others) and yet manages to hit that nail (= the voice of every single muse) square on the head every time! I hear Balthazar's funny-ironic voice when I write with him, I see Jody being Mom when I interact with her, I get the British Mick Vibes when it's his time to shine. I'm in awe of how someone manages to juggle so many muses and give everyone their own little voice. Kudos!
