What if Patrick Bateman was a vampire? Not sure if he'd be a Cullen but at the same time I can't see him being by himself as he thrives off of attention and acceptance from others. What would his gift be? Would the Cullens even let him stick around if he wanted to?
I mean, he'd be a sad sad man, as you note. However, it's not for the reason you specify.
He'd continue his life of eating prostitutes, homeless people, and his old coworkers and somehow nobody notices. He still goes to work, nobody notices he's not perfectly tan anymore. Somehow, no one notices he's a fucking vampire because they're also not entirely sure which yuppie he is.
The Volturi even crack down on him for breaking the law, but end up murdering his coworker, because they can't tell the difference either because that's the world Patrick Bateman lives in.
Or rather, that's Patrick's gift, to be utterly indistinguishable from his peers in every way. Somehow.
Patrick never escapes Wall Street and certainly never makes it into the Cullens.

this is a very rookie, non-American thing for me to only now realize and say, but can we talk about how Trump is the person Patrick fricking Bateman canonically idolizes over all others in American Psycho, like Trump is a literal symbol of the evils of white supremacy and capitalism and is admired by one of the biggest fictional psychopaths in all of literature and people still let the man lead the country??? even after Patrick fricking Bateman endorsed him back in 1990??? this is so meta in 2023 it's actually hilarious and when I say hilarious I mean horrible like I can't breathe

Favorite Record is a mid Fall Out Boy song but it's my favorite thing they've ever made. here's why:
the verses ARE boring and repetitive, though I like the Rancid and Danzig references because they're specific and break the 4th wall. Fave is self aware. it is a song that fondly describes dancing to other songs. Fave wants to capture memories as vividly as the music it shouts out.
"I'll spin for you like your favorite records used to" is the sweetest and most morbid thing I've ever heard. we too will become obsolete like those record but I'll be what you have now, I'll carry their legacy, I'll grow old with you and your beloved tunes. also there's something intimate and possibly sexual about this line and I love how that interpretation coexists w the sweetness and morbidity
this is the one single FOB song that isn't gilded with rage or snark or profound sadness. it's just joy. the relationship Fave describes might be platonic or romantic. it has failed before but it's perfect now on this sunset drive, dancing to beloved tunes and screaming your hearts out. god.
Favorite Record achieves exactly what it hopes to achieve. it captures a glittering moment in time. it's untouchable.

Spn but Sam keeps a journal/diary and there are several plotlines based around Dean stealing and reading said diary. Like in season 1 or 2 theres an episode where Dean read it without Sams permission and its a big thing and they have a huge fight that ends with Dean promising to trust Sam and swearing to never read it again. Then in late seasons there's an episode where Sam makes a fake entry in the diary in order to hide smth from Dean or to throw Dean off his scent and its framed as Sam being really manipulative and suspicious and Dean gets to be super betrayed when he finds out

I'm finally reading Midnight Sun, and it's kind of insane how...Edward Edward blatantly is in this book. Like, somewhere on your blog you compare it to American Psycho, and I totally get what you mean. It's so fking long compared to Bella's POV, and if Edward wasn't whining and moaning about how terrible and damned he is the entire time, it would be 100 pages. (Oh, and this is while he continues to do the terrible and immoral things that he feels so bad about--like he's self aware, to a point, but it's all just for show, and he's not going to stop planning Mike's murder or sneaking into Bella's room and watching her sleep all night.)
Oh my God, and the other thing is that every SINGLE page, he takes some time to talk about how good Bella smells and how nice her skin is, and he's always sticking his face in her neck and inhaling like he's high. He doesn't say, "I find you & your [specific trait] so attractive", no, it's basically all about her flesh, her warmth, her 'delicateness' and fragility (e.g. humanity, e.g. the fact that he could kill her if he wanted to), and the CONSTANT SNIFFING is so uncomfy. Like, it's so blatant that his favorite thing about her is her ODOR, and everything else takes a backseat.
I remember the obligatory period of time (ages ago) I went through hating on Twilight for how much of a creep Edward is, but now I finally understand--I've seen the light!!!! The books are good, precisely because of how much of a creep Edward is, and because it's just so obvious and horrifying and entertaining, and the entire thing is such a shitshow. Midnight Sun is so much worse in that regard than Twilight, because he's basically ranting and deranged the entire time and we don't have any breaks.
I just wanna thank you for your metas, because I enjoy them so much, and now that I'm finally reading one of the books after having been indoctrinated over, I'm noticing all these crazy moments. Like, there was one scene where Bella forgives Edward for (I think this was what it was about) watching her sleep for months, and then right after, Edward compares the moment and the relief he felt then to when he came back from his "bender" and Carlisle forgave him, and I thought that was really telling that he was comparing those two situations and people...
Also, it's insane how melodramatic he is. Like every 10 pages, he'll say something that'll remind me of one of your or Muffin's metas, and it's giving me life.
Anyway, love your takes and fics!!!! <3
I'm so happy to hear this, and it's very validating (as three years on, it's easy to forget just how... Edward... Edward is). You're making me want to read the book again.
Thank you so much for the lovely words!
Look, @theoriginalcarnivorousmuffin, a lovely anon!

Hi! I love all your MP100 metas. Truly amazing! Here is a popular take on mob which I noticed quite common in eastern fandom but not brought up much in western: shigeo actually has very strong ego, in a way that he only allows himself to be affected by words he wants to follow, sticks to his wants without giving in to others' wishes, and sometimes breaking others' worldview (teru) or challenging (ritsu, dimple, reigen) simply by following his own will, which relates to ??? . What do you think?
*blushes* THANK YOU AAAAAHHHHHH
i agree with you! shigeo himself is not even aware of his own strength in that regard for much of the story; watching him become more comfortable with his own iconoclasm is one of the things i enjoy most about mob psycho 100. i think shigeo's strong will and (mostly) unshakeable principles are maybe not mentioned as much in western fandom because shigeo is pretty far from the western--i'm just gonna say american here, because it's the perspective i'm best acquainted with--ideal for a young male protagonist.
we tend to prefer at least some degree of blustery, extroverted self-confidence in our heroes; soft-spoken, sad, traumatized kids who seem unsure of themselves don't fly here unless their character development involves 'outgrowing' this. shigeo is understated, and quiet, and downbeat, and kind of sickly even after gaining stamina. he also doesn't trust himself or his own perceptions for quite a while, and i've read more than a few reviews of MP100 in which these qualities made it easy for the authors to discount him as a whole. if a viewer finds him 'boring' or can't relate to him at all, they won't bother to stick around for his steely tenacity or his surprising resistance to groupthink.
despite his apparent 'weakness', he doesn't give in easily, doesn't bend even if his life is at stake, and even manages to persuade others or change their hearts in his own quiet way, simply by being himself. and his strong ego, as you put it (i would actually say his id, if we're going freudian with this) actually SAVES HIS LIFE. repeatedly. that and ???% are one and the same.
i live in a country where quiet people are routinely overlooked because they're not boldly proclaiming their greatness to everyone they meet; to me, shigeo is a reminder that i don't have to compromise who i am to have a successful life. and that is a powerful message to hear at any age.

Dead Fandom - Should You Even Bother?
The TSP RP fandom used to be incredibly active but life and dwindling interest has deactivated a lot of blogs, leaving only few roleplayers remaining, bravely writing through the drought, believing that one day, we might get another influx of new blogs to carry us through the year.
But seriously, if you want to roleplay for TSP, don't let the low activity discourage you. There will always be at least one person (most likely me) who will stubbornly continue on writing.
If you find yourself lacking in TSP partners, you can expand to other fandoms. The Stanley Parable famously gets along with other games, media and meta-narratives, so try your luck!
Some great crossover options are
Portal
Severance
There Is No Game
Superliminal
House of Leaves
Homestuck
The Magnus Archives
Presentable Liberty
Half Life
Analogue Horror and ARGS
Break The Game
Doki Doki Literature Club
Welcome To Night Vale
Loki series
WOE.BEGONE
Doctor Who
Supernatural
Undertale
Yuppie Psycho
Pony Island
Silent Hill
The Backrooms
ESC Game
American Arcadia
Ib
Slay The Princess
Rick and Morty
The Secret Series
...and basically whatever else you can come up with! There are also tons of amazing fandomless blogs to interact with, don't rule anything out!

Exploring dark, toxic and otherwise unfavourable subjects isn't something that should be discouraged amongst writers and authors. These subjects have produced a multitude of classics and critically acclaimed works such as A Clockwork Orange and American Psycho.
The problem with the modern toxicity in the booktok/booktube YA favourites is the lack of nuance and tone.
These darker subjects, written to be palatable for adults by adults, aren't appropriate for such a broad age demographic as YA.
They go unchallenged with little to no commentary on the subject itself, which leads the work into meta romanticism (which I define as the romanticism of the act and/or subject outside of the fictional work and subjective narrative).
There's no nuance that requires the reader to re-evaluate their views or cause them discomfort. Reading is an emotional experience, and dark subjects should trigger negative responses.
Darker subjects can be included in romances and adventures, as long as you make time to explore them -- all of them, from the build up to the climax to the aftermath. If you can't or won't follow through with the whole thing, it will become meta romanticism and that's not only toxic itself but lazy.
Portraying in-world romanticism of the darker subjects whilst also avoiding romanticising it to your readers is incredibly difficult and shouldn't be added to novels that you'd rather focus on something else. Make sure you know how you want the subject to come across before you commit yourself to writing it.
Booktok/booktube needs to stop fawning over authors who are romanticising the dark subjects in their stories both in and outside the narrative. Yes, reading should be fun, but when we read too much of something we either become desensitised to it or we normalise it.
With booktok/booktubes obsession with certain romantic dynamics, the results of seeing these pairings as "goals" could be damaging.

The Shards is so fun so far and makes me so nostalgic for Riverdale and, even more so, good Riverdale fanfic. The commitment to aesthetic, the perfect richpeople lives that are broken underneath, the outrageous violence sweeping through the town! And Bret’s narration really feels like Jughead’s—the high school aspiring writer of it all, the awareness of his role in dramas big and small, his cynicism and depression, his meta-role as author since the work is inspired by autobiography. The pop culture references are kind of a lot, but they also set the 80s scene really nicely and amplify the sense of threat, in a way that feels fittingly reminiscent of American Psycho. Ellis luxuriates in period details and slice-of-life stuff that sometimes makes it read weirdly like good fanfic, with its weaker emphasis on pacing. I will say that a comparison with Riverdale also really brings out how this story is so far *only* about the wealthy, whereas Riverdale was really strengthened by a more diverse cast.

My The Secret History fancast + thoughts on an adaptation (LONG)
Hey guys just screaming into the void here and brainrotting about The Secret History (a Tumblr rite of passage it seems)--but not exactly for the reasons you'd expect. Anyway, I was watching a video essay on why The Secret History shouldn't get made into a film and I found myself disagreeing with a lot of the points the author made (respectfully). A few of their points: 1. The Secret History couldn't get made today because it uses language that uses too many slurs.
I understand how the use of such offensive language (I believe in the book it was homophobic/racist, and mainly from Bunny Corcoran), even when employed with the relevant context and blatantly disapproved of, can still be harmful to hear. But I also know that there are definitely college students today who (unfortunately) regularly use that language, despite the more politically correct world we live in. I also think that responsible screenwriters would take care to add the appropriate weight to those scenes and ALSO point out the more "liberal" characters' own prejudices evidenced in their dialogue (they definitely have them in the book), as Get Out did. IMO those moments were more sinister than the cringe Bunny scenes.
2. The Secret History as a movie would be romanticized instead of being viewed as the critique/satire that it is.
Sure. I fuck with the dark academia aesthetic as much as any other bitch, but... oh my god it was impossible for me to romanticize anything in this book because it was genuinely triggering to read. I grew up with the study of Greek philosophy and mythology being a big part of my life (don't ask), and I went to a small elite liberal arts college in New England. As a freshman, I remember feeling the way Richard did at the beginning of the novel, caught up in the small intellectual, rich friend groups, the rural New England lifestyle, the college debauchery. But I read this book with a lot more experience under my belt and, boy, you come to see through all these characters REAL quick. These rich kids are so puffed up on their intellectualism that they think they can escape the consequences of their actions--it sounds a lot like nearly every motherfucker I met at my college! And Professor Julian is just an older and more hypocritical version of these students, preaching on and on about morality and haphazardly applying theory to elevate themselves above the "common folk." Donna Tartt really captured the frustrating, out of touch, self-important attitude that runs rampant at these privileged institutions. I wouldn't say that's a difficult thing to translate to film as it's been done before (Succession being one of the most prominent examples). And yes, of course there may be a portion of the audience that may choose to ignore the critique/don't necessarily possess critical thinking skills and you'd end up with an American Psycho situation (re: the glorification of Patrick Bateman), but I believe that also had more to do with the fact that American Psycho's critique was in satire form--the humor gave way to memes that removed context from the story. Meanwhile, The Secret History's less likely to be memed because the satire is not absurdist--it's also really fucking obvious that it is a critique because it's written like a Greek tragedy where none of the characters are redeemable at the end of it. Will it be used for Pinterest boards and Tumblr graphics? Sure, but that doesn't necessarily strip away context--just popularizes an aesthetic. And such a thing serves the theme of the story (the obsession with aesthetics above all, especially during the rise of the 80s hyperconsumer culture) as meta-commentary/transmedia storytelling (that parallels our own generation's obsession with using consumption to form our aesthetics and identity).
3. The cast of The Secret History would be predominantly white because that's how it was in the book and that whiteness is an important aspect of depicting the characters' privilege and ability to navigate the situations they find themselves in.
I agree, yes, a good adaptation of this novel would likely be one that had the students/Julian be white, but that also doesn't necessarily exclude POC representation in yet another movie. I think stories that blatantly criticize rich white people, while trendy at the moment, are important when done correctly (Succession!)--AND there are definitely characters that do not have to be white that I think are plenty important (I think Judy and Cloke could be interesting here given Richard's uncharitable depiction of them as unintellectual drug users. Playing into stereotypes is NOT the goal, I think they are foils to the main group in some sense and also come out of this tragedy more or less untouched) (also, you know, the rich white main group do more illicit substances and crimes than they do which I think adequately reflects reality). Adding more POC characters that might not be inner circle but could also be main characters wouldn't be impossible in an adaptation and might help with the point below--I'm thinking detectives, other students and professors, etc. And depending on whether or not you're updating this for the modern day or keeping it in the 80s, I think there's a lot you can play with if Richard Papen was casted as an Asian American (as one myself, having watched the car crash that was the overturning of affirmative action this summer,,, it just feels like there's a lot you can do with that) (I agree with the essayist that making Richard Papen John Boyega might not do a whole lot for Black representation--it feels like there's a certain amount of setting him up with that fancast).
4. The Secret History wouldn't lend itself well to an adaptation because the novel relies mostly on Donna Tartt's prose than anything that could be translated to a filmic structure.
This point I just do not agree with at ALL. I mean, Tartt's prose is excellent of course, and it is told from Richard's perspective, yeah. But here, I just have to point you to Jean-Marc Valee's Sharp Objects or Big Little Lies, based on books. Both are murder mysteries, both are slow burn with plenty of introspective, quiet moments, both are masterful adaptations. What carried me through the novel wasn't the prose but the growing magnitude of dread that spoils the romance of the whole deal. There are so many layers of intrigue too--the enigmatic Julian, the exclusiveness of the group, what mysterious activities they're up to, why Bunny is acting out, whether he'll rat on them, and THEN--will they get away with the murders, will Charles or anyone else in the group confess, will Henry kill again, on and on. Richard's corruption arc was also super fascinating too me--you start out rooting for this guy and at the end he's just like the rest of them. It would be cool to explore the arcs of the rest of the characters as well, even before their murder anxieties. The point is, there is so much material that, if laid out meticulously enough, would make a film or a tv series a medium to enhance the original story's themes and characters.
And now, for the Tumblr tradition: fancast (extremely self-indulgent and incredibly unrealistic)
Richard Papen - Justin H Min
Bro I loved him in The Umbrella Academy I needed more
Tumblr media
Henry Winter - Wilbur Soot
Tumblr media
LOL alternatively Jacob Elordi but Wilbur Soot is just stubbornly what my mind visualized as I was reading
Bunny Corcoran - Dacre Montgomery
Tumblr media
He has the charming smarmy bastard typecast DOWN
Francis Abernathy - Alex Wolff
Tumblr media
I need to see him in more things!!!
Charles Macaulay - Drew Starkey
Tumblr media
I think he plays psycho brothers pretty well
Camilla Macaulay - Elle Fanning
Tumblr media
I mean Gwyneth Paltrow was 100% the right choice but unfortunately that did not materialize... however Elle Fanning slayed in The Great and she's so underrated as an actress

meta  on  love.
i  have  a  lot  of  thoughts  in  regards  to  love  with  patrick  bateman.  i  have  been  re-reading  american  psycho  and  i  genuinely  feel  like  patrick’s  ego  would  boost  so  hard  if  someone  told  him  they  loved  him.  if  he  has  been  spending  time  with  your  muse  and  if  they  display  some  qualities  that  he  admires,  he  would  definitely  feel  under  pressure  to  hide  his  true  self.  he  would  keep  up  the  mask  of  being  this  charming,  wealthy  and  smart  businessman  that  likes  overpriced  suits  and  restaurants.  he  knows  he  can’t  stop  his  homicidal  urges  and  he  doesn’t  want  to  understand  them  either,  but  he  would  continue  killing  in  secret.  he  knows  it  is  a  standard  thing  to  say,  ‘i  love  you’  and  to  feel  love,  but  he  would  have  intentions  of  wanting  to  marry  your  muse  in  some  way.  &  this  decision  won’t  come  lightly. he  will  get  attached  to  your  muse  if  it  progresses  into  a  romantic  relationship  –  especially  if  there  have  been  ‘vulnerable’  moments  that  your  muse  witnesses  with  patrick  &  he  would  actually  appreciate  those  moments  that  your  muse  is  there  for  him.    he  will  go  soft  eventually  on  your  muse  which  will  take  your  muse  by  surprise,  and  it  surprises  him  too.  and  of  course,  the  relationship  will  remain  toxic  and  unfair,  he  will  want  to  control  every  aspect  of  things  in  his  ways.  be  careful  of  what  you  tell  him.  it  depends  on  the  situation  as  well  but  it  will  definitely  not  be  an  easy  ride  with  him.
