'sjm is a romantasy author and it's not that serious. it's meant to be fun" for you. i started tog when romantasy was not a genre. i remember waiting for QoS to come out. i went and bought it at the bookstore the week it was released. it was just another ya series (that i was obsessed with and loved). i witnessed the degradation of her writing after HoF. it felt like a betrayal. i started reading her when i was a lot younger, and followed her series for years. it's too late the obsession was already created. the betrayal was personal (sjm has no idea i exist). so no i will not get over it let me have my fun.
like. look. i love the concepts and ideas and blueprints for the characters. they're fun and you can have a good time reading them. i hated chaol and still read CoM and ToD. i hated rowaelin and still enjoyed the series. just when the quality is at the point where it feels almost insulting that she published it and expected people to pay money for it it pisses me off a little.

“Why do people hate chaol”
We hate chaol because for the longest time Celaena/aelin hated chaol. When reading you somewhat absorb the feelings of certain characters, with c/a’s dislike of him, we disliked him. She disliked him because he didn’t tell her of the threat to nehemia’s life which caused her to spiral into despair and we sympathised with her, after all the death of a friend you felt like you could’ve prevented is heartbreaking. It’s why due to ToD many people came to like chaol because the book was free of the bias that came with c/a’s pov.
And lots of people were able to overcome that and like chaol and ToD, some were not and some (like me) are somewhat on the fence

My Problem with SJM
I’ve been reading Sarah’s books for about 7 years now. There are things I genuinely love about them. I’m not going to sit here and trash every single thing about them or shit all over her as an author. Her books have brought me a lot enjoyment and credit is due where it’s due.
However, if you asked me, point blank, “What do you think of Sarah as an author?” I’d probably sit there on the verge of an aneurysm because I genuinely don’t know how to answer this question.
As much as I enjoy reading her books and genuinely love parts of them, I’ve been growing more frustrated with them over time. This kind of all came to a head in reading ACOFAS and ACOSF. I used to think that these were mostly isolated little incidents involving random different characters. I used to think it was about Chaol, or Tamlin, or Lucien, or Nesta. I’ve come to realize that it’s really not. It’s about Sarah herself and the bizarre way she has chosen to portray her characters.
Every single one of Sarah’s characters do bad things. ALL OF THEM. There is not a single significant character she has written in any book who has not done something shady, or morally gray, or wrong, or hurtful, or whatever. I seriously challenge you to try and find me a character who has not. This is completely normal and understandable!!! No one wants to read about a perfect and utterly flawless character. It makes them uninteresting and unrelatable. ALL good books should feature nuanced characters.
The issue I have is this: while every single character in her writing does bad things, only SOME characters are DEFINED by these bad things. No matter what else they do or say, they are deemed an irredeemable piece of shit who will never deserve anything good. Even if other characters aren’t openly hostile towards them anymore, the narrative will always find a way to subtly remind us all that these are “bad” people who did bad things to others. Any criticism they receive is justified and right. It does not matter how many good and/or heroic deeds are carried out by these characters. Often times these very characters will end up expressing how awful and unworthy they are, either internally or to other characters.
At the same time, there are other characters who do equally bad things (if not worse or significantly worse!!!!!) and have every single one blatantly ignored or explained and justified by the narrative or other characters. They are treated in the exact OPPOSITE way. No matter what they do, they are right. No matter how hypocritical, cruel, or just plain wrong they are, it will never ever be acknowledged by anyone. They will never be made to hold an ounce of responsibility for any of it. Other characters, themselves, and the narrative will turn an absolute blind eye to any wrongdoing and will gush and fawn over them instead.
This would be enough to be incredibly frustrating. But it doesn’t end here!!
Not only will these special select characters have every single blatant wrongdoing ignored, they will also walk around smugly judging the characters who are less fortunate (aka less favored by the author). Despite the majorly shady acts of their own, they will walk around highlighting all the bad things others have done while self-righteously proclaiming their own moral superiority. The narrative and the thoughts and words of other characters will support this. Sarah will beat you over the head with it. An opportunity will never be lost to tell us (not necessarily SHOW us) what a morally good person they are in comparison to someone else.
It honestly makes me feel kind of insane when I’m reading it. It makes me stop and sit there and wrack my brain going, “Does Sarah know she is doing this????” Does she realize she is a giant hypocrite of a writer?? Does she know she makes giant hypocrites of her characters?? It’s honestly hilarious to me because in writing the way she does, she takes the characters who she clearly wants me to adore and favor and makes me end up hating them and makes me end up rooting for the characters who she clearly wants me to dislike. I never liked Chaol until I read Queen of Shadows, when he is irrationally blamed for every one of Aelin’s problems. I was never really that invested in Lucien until he started to get shit on by absolutely everyone in the Inner Circle. I was never a Nesta stan until I read ACOSF, where she is bullied and mistreated by her “family” and gaslighted into thinking that they are right and she is deserving of all they say and do to her. I never had any true passionate feelings about Tamlin until he became a personal punching bag for every single character in ACOTAR, despite the majorly important good things he does that everyone ignores. It blows my mind how Sarah seems to fail to realize that the people walking around with a Holier-Than-Thou Attitude toward these people have a laundry list of majorly questionable actions of their own that never gets addressed.
In short, Sarah essentially self-sabotages as an author and I don’t understand it. You wouldn’t see me and tons of other people posting essays with word counts in the thousands defending the actions of certain characters so strongly and passionately if her little favorites were made to hold even the tiniest bit of accountability over their own wrongdoings and weren’t crapping all over the less favored. It makes her faves come across as the stereotypical “favorite child” in a family who everyone secretly resents and rolls their eyes at. If you’re going to have characters who constantly judge and scorn others for their perceived wrongdoings, it would be smart to give them a spotless and crystal clear record themselves. People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
No one enjoys reading about hypocrites, Sarah. Gain some self awareness and start holding ALL characters to the same standards and accountability.

I just don't understand how anyone can hate Chaol after reading this:
Burned alive burned alive burned alive The void showed him fire. A woman with golden-brown hair and matching skin screaming in agony toward the heavens. It showed him a broken body on a bloody bed. A head rolling across a marble floor. You did this you did this you did this It showed a woman with eyes of blue flame and hair of pure gold poised above him, dagger raised and angling to plunge into his heart. He wished. He sometimes wished that she hadn’t been stopped. The scar on his face—from the nails she’d gouged into it when she first struck him … It was that hateful wish he thought of when he looked in the mirror. The body on the bed and that cold room and that scream. The collar on a tan throat and a smile that did not belong to a beloved face. The heart he’d offered and had been left to drop on the wooden planks of the river docks. An assassin who had sailed away and a queen who had returned. A row of fine men hanging from the castle gates. All held within that slim scar. What he could not forgive or forget. The void showed it to him, again and again. It lashed his body with red-hot, pronged whips. And showed him those things, over and over. It showed him his mother. And his brother. And his father. Everything he had left. What he’d failed. What he’d hated and what he’d become. The lines between the last two had blurred. And he had tried. He had tried these weeks, these months. The void did not want to hear of that. Black fire raced down his blood, his veins, trying to drown out those thoughts. The burning rose left on a nightstand. The final embrace of his king. He had tried. Tried to hope, and yet— Women little more than children hauling him off a horse. Poking and prodding at him. Pain struck, low and deep in his spine, and he couldn’t breathe around it, couldn’t out-scream it— White light flared. A flutter. Far in the distance. Not the gold or red or blue of flame. But white like sunlight, clear and clean. A flicker through the dark, arcing like lightning riding through the night … And then the pain converged again. His father’s eyes—his father’s raging eyes when he announced he was leaving to join the guard. The fists. His mother’s pleading. The anguish on her face the last time he’d seen her, as he’d ridden away from Anielle. The last time he’d seen his city, his home. His brother, small and cowering in their father’s long shadow. A brother he had traded for another. A brother he had left behind. The darkness squeezed, crushing his bones to dust. It would kill him. It would kill him, this pain, this … this endless, churning pit of nothing. Perhaps it would be a mercy. He wasn’t entirely certain his presence—his presence beyond made any sort of difference. Not enough to warrant trying. Coming back at all. The darkness liked that. Seemed to thrive on that. Even as it tightened the vise around his bones. Even as it boiled the blood in his veins and he bellowed and bellowed— He's barely old enough to be a college graduate. He grew up in a lord's house, grew up being taught to despise magic (was kicked out of his own home too but that's a whole other story). And yet he tried so hard to support his friends, to help Dorian and Celaena/Aelin (even after Aelin tried to kill him) and try to depose the King of Adarlan. He has withstood so much and lost everything dear to him...and you think he deserves it? He has tried so hard, arguably harder than any character in ToG. None of what happened to him was his fault, and yet he views all of it as his failures, as something he should be ashamed of, should DIE for even. Y'all hate him because he's one of the most complex and best developed characters SJM has ever written. I honestly feel like he and Nesta would be able to relate to each other so much in the way that they view their miserable circumstances as products of their own failures. Y'all hate Chaol and Nesta because they had difficulty accepting magic/Fae like NORMAL PEOPLE would. Y'all hate them because they didn't immediately kiss the MC's ass and beg for forgiveness for nothing.
But you'll obsess over Rowan Whitethorn, who is 300+ years old and should know better than to punch a teen in the face (absolutely uncalled for) and tell her she should've died 10 years ago.
But you'll obsess over Rhysand (I prefer the name Reece's Piece of shit) after he sexually assaulted Feyre and locked Lucien and Nesta up in houses. But you'll obsess over Cassian who physically abused Nesta by making her climb a mountain and you could even make an argument for sexual manipulation/abuse (but I'm not going to get into that because I don't know enough on the topic). But you'll obsess over Azriel, who almost choked Eris to death for insulting Mor back after she'd already insulted him, who has known anger issues and scares even Feyre with his utter lack of feeling. Not to mention the bonus chapter with the creepy way he spoke of Elain and Lucien. Wow, Chaol is so evil! Nesta is so evil!

rowan is a cheap, boring and rude version of chaol. they're both grumpy, annoyed, no-nonsense warriors who at first are wary of aelin/celaena but grow to care for her deeply. they even have the same mbti!! the main difference is that chaol did it first, and chaol did it better.

hey! Aelin stan here, I just wanted to say that i've seen your anti Aelin posts and you make really good points! You're completely correct in pointing out that Aelin should in no way have all the "life experience" SJM throws at her or be able to play the queen card all the time. In my opinion, the root issue is bad writing and SJM's apparent inability to write MCs who aren't some glorified, deified "perfect" being who checks all the boxes ever imagined.
I honestly wish that we saw more of Aelin making her mistakes and having to deal with the consequences. Like yeah, we sort of do, but not in any real way, and I think that's one of the things we as readers in general but also as Aelin stans tend to gloss over. She was rash and impetuous and never seemed to suffer the consequences, and everyone around her backed her up even when they "were mad that she didn't tell anyone her plans." Again, i think a decent part of this is bad writing and a too-heavy relance on the fantasy as opposed to making characters believable, but Aelin was the main main character, she deserved more than being exalted to god status.
thank you for being a voice of critique :) feel free to respond however you think this giant rambling braindump deserves :)
Hi Aelin Stan! I hope you’re doing awesome.
First of all I’m so sorry for taking centuries in replying to this 😭 Thank you very much for taking the time to drop by and leave your question.
Thank you so much for reading my posts! I wouldn’t consider myself fully anti-Aelin, but I include the tag so people can navigate through the content easier and well, because that post, as you remember, wasn’t precisely hyping her up hahah 😅. I do, however, see she has lots of positive traits to her and actually like her, she has a special place in my reader heart.
I agree with you completely! It was most likely because lots of things were going on throughout the series. First, it heavily relied on fantasy, as you say (which is not bad and it’s part of why I loved it) but soon SJM was tasked with
-Generating lore for this fantasy world
-Explain fantastic elements as more characters were added (For example: Introduce Manon= Explain the whole dynamics about witches. Introduce Rowan= Explain the whole dynamics about fae and demi-fae)
- Weaving the characters and making them interact so we had a story
-Developing each character’s arc
- Bringing the story forward making it make sense
-Write romance for all these characters ending with more than 6 pairings
SO IT WAS A LOT GOING ON! And I do admire as a reader the amount of work this represented and how she brought it forward. in the end, the series counts with 8 books and it still left us wanting for more!
At the same time, maybe this was the reason there wasn’t enough space for development, introspection, accountability for Aelin. There simply was no space for this to happen! If Aelin suffered the consequences, as you very smartly mention, it would have required to edit the text and narrow certain elements to have space, or add 2 more books to the series and make it 10 (which I’m personally not opposed to hahah, but we know how editorial publications work and it’s already hard as it is to publish 8 books in a row!)
Perhaps the work got so big no amount of words did it justice. Maybe we wouldn’t have gotten Elide or Aedion. Who knows how it would’ve gone.
Many readers mention in their critiques of TOG the space management (aka: reading and editing to cut out irrelevant parts and make reading more efficient and straightforward) What I can say about it is: I agree, however, SJM is the writer. We must respect as readers that maybe these parts in her mind were specifically relevant to her and helped her build this big fantasy world in her head. Many parts could be left out to make it “neater” but it’s easy to critique when you’re not the one who’s writing.
Throughout the 8 books, I felt SJM’s necessity to transmit. She wanted to take us into the narrative, clarify all of the reader’s questions and she did a commendable job in doing so. However, she did drown in words in some parts. Sometimes you were reading and the narrator was talking and talking and you couldn’t help but think: ???? Why is this relevant? Hahaha
Maybe these parts could be used for the character development we were seeking at the expense of cutting out certain details from the books.
Well, you have no idea how much I love engaging in these types of conversation so I really have to thank you 🥹❤️ I send you a hug wherever you are and you’re not rambling! It makes so much sense! I can see you’re an avid reader 💕
Lots of love and if you ever want to discuss books again I’m here! Promise to take much less in replying.

Okay, everyone in the Pizza Tower fandom is aware that The Noise was inspired by The Noid, an anti-mascot from Domino's Pizza. But... did you know The Noid has lore? I found this comment on MatPat's Food Theory video on The Noid today; it was posted 10 months ago:
Tumblr media
If you can't read it, it says this:
I briefly worked at domino's in the early 90's.. One of my tasks there was dressing up in a 6ft tall Noid costume and dance around on the side of the road. It really sucked. One interesting thing about working there was a poster in the breakroom that gave actual lore for the Noid. It stated that gremlins have plagued mankind since the dawn of time and as time and technology progressed, various gremlins would specialize in messing with various things, like airplanes, cars, etc. Then one day, a "renegade gremlin" named the Noid decided to take specialization a step further by causing mayhem for pizza delivery, and was highly successful at it, until he went up against his arch nemesis, Domino's. It was a professionally made poster that was provided to the store by Domino's, so I figure it's official Noid canon, but I've never seen a copy of it online, nor have I seen anything anywhere on the internet that states this lore.. it's weird.
So, assuming this is true... all the times we've called The Noise or Noisette gremlins is actually spot-on, and not just because a poster in one of Pizza Tower's levels calls them "Pizza Gremlins". The Noid is a gremlin who specializes in messing up pizza deliveries... a PIZZA GREMLIN. Another example of gremlins in popular media is The Gremlins by Walt Disney, which was originally a book written by famous children's author Roald Dahl:
Tumblr media
The Gremlins were originally going to star in a full-length film in the 1940's, but it never came to fruition. Here, they were known to sabotage war planes. These guys did show up in books later, and even made appearances in the Epic Mickey video game series.
So yeah, calling Noise and Noisette "gremlins" is correct. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if The Doise was also some sort of gremlin...

Why antis keep saying that elain and azriel will have something but then az will realize he need to be with gwyn?they keep saying elain is azriel nesryn😂 I mean Elain is going to be a main character. Sjm love her girls I can not see her putting the decision in azriel. I mean even in tower of dawn chaol book it was nesryn who was hey homeboy i hold you to no promises 🤣like I get it we can use other book as support for our theories but is still another series with different characters. Azriel is not chaol by any means . SJM wrote each series very differently tog was multiple pov acotar is not. Honestly when I started reading acosf I was waiting for the romantic gwynriel moments because well she was a new character so she could start a romance with azriel but it never happened so how is it similar to chaol and yrene?😅 is not like az and elain are together right now like chaol and nesryn they have just been built up for books now. So their interpretation is all this build up if for them to have sex a couple time and azriel is like ohhh I love gwyn?
Everytime eriels are like ok can u explain this eriel evidence they always come with a stupid response. “Read better” “ sjm is just misleading you” “nesta hated cassian just like elain hates lucien”
Because they'll grasp and grab at any and all branches that they see. It's everything from 'SJM changed her mind' to 'Elriel are brother and sister' to 'they are rebounds' to 'Elain wants to be human' to 'It's like Chaol!' to 'it's only lust' to 'something sparked in Azriel's chest' to 'Elain is evil' to 'Azriel will end up with Eris' and everything in between.
Chaol and his story have absolutely NOTHING to do with Elriel and how ACOTAR is written.
ACOTAR is a tale about the 3 sisters. ACTOAR had nothing to do with Azriel and he would not have his own book and his own story that's not tied with an Archeron sister.
What is so hard to understand: Rhys with Feyre, Cassian with Nesta, Azriel with Elain.
What do they think SJM sold to BB and to her editor:
SJM: Okay, so we are going to finish the Feysand trilogy. And then I want to write about the sisters. Wait no. What I am going to do, is I will write about Nesta. Definitely Nesta. And Cassian. Nesta and Cassian and their story. And then, I am going to create this friend for Nesta. And then I am going to write about Azriel.
Editor: What? What about Elain.
SJM: No, I want to write about this friend of Nesta's and Azriel.
Editor: Why are you writing about Nesta's friend? Is she an Archeron?
SJM: Well, no. But she is a quarter nymph!
Editor: ...
SJM: And then Azriel,
Editor: But how is he connected to the plot, if it's just about him? Isn't the story about the Archerons?
SJM: Well, yes. But this friend,
Editor: How's she connected to the plot?
SJM: Well, she is not. But, with Azriel there...
Editor: But what does he have to do with anything if he is not with one of the sisters.
SJM: *drinks more wine*
Editor: Maybe you need to workshop that one. We'll circle back. Let's put a pin in this. And streamline it.

Tower of Dawn:
“There is another piece to the life-bond, to this bargain,” Hafiza added gently. They turned to her. “When it is time, whether the death is kind or cruel. . .it will claim you both.”
Her strength would be his strength. And when Yrene went, he would go. But if he went before her--
Dread curled in his gut.
“The true price of all this,” Hafiza said, reading the panic. “Not fear for your own life, but what losing your life will do to the other.”
ACOWAR:
“When it’s time to go there,” I said quietly, “we go together.”
“It’s a bargain,” he said, and kissed me gently.
I murmured back onto his lips, “Yes, it is.”
The skin on my left arm tingled. A lick of warmth snaked down it. I looked down to find another tattoo there--the twin to the one that had once graced it. He’d modified this one to fit around it, to be seamlessly integrated amid the whorls and swirls.
“I missed the old one,” he said innocently.

It seems any book that celebrates and centers nature will have heaps of GoodReads reviews interpreting diverse and even contradictory political or social ideas into it. The same book will be disparaged (or praised) as anti-capitalist, conservative, queer, misogynist, left-wing, right-wing. But haven’t we considered that there are whole swaths of human experience that fall outside of the contemporary right-left spectrum, and whole swaths of existence that fall outside of human experience altogether?
The best thing about animal fiction is not when it tells us about ourselves or holds up a mirror to humanity -- it’s when it tells us about things that are decidedly not ourselves. Even that most delightfully, thickly human animal fiction, The Wind In the Willows, is at its most transcendent when the natural world takes center stage: the river as a character in its own right, the inexplicable tug South during autumn, the Piper at the gates of dawn.
It is a greater triumph to build a portal than a mirror. If in every book we see merely ourselves (or our political opponents), maybe we need to, as they say, “touch grass.” And then imagine what the grass feels when it pricks against our skin, as a beetle scuttles between its towering blades, unaware that the shadow you cast over it belongs to anyone at all.
