Anfuu analysis
Tumblr media
Anime onlys: I would highly recommend not reading any further because I will be discussing a lot of shit that happens way past episode 10 in the anime.
This is long, sorry
Lemme say first off that I really have not seen a relationship like Andy and Fuuko's before (granted my only other shonen series I have been into were Fairy Tail and AOT). From what I have seen in other shonen, which I normally can't get into because they're pretty cookie cutter imo, romance doesn't happen right off the bat.
Undead Unluck would not be a thing if Fuuko and Andy didn't have a relationship. I'm a damn sucker for romance and the second I saw the dynamic between them in the first episode, I knew I was in for a helluva ride.
So in the beginning, it is obvious that Andy is using her. He has admitted to it multiple times, there's no hiding it. My guy wanted to die and saw someone who could potentially give him a proper death and he wasn't going to let that opportunity slip through his fingers.
Up until the end of Spoil, Andy saving Fuuko, protecting her, teasing her, that was all for his personal gain. He didn't take into account that she had been touch deprived for ten years, living vicariously through her shojo manga. Andy called her a pushover many times but I don't think she was. She loved the fact that she could touch someone without them dying. In a short amount of time, she got to live out a ton of different scenarios that only her shojo mango could provide her and I think she was in love with the idea that she could finally start living a little.
Going back to the Spoil arc, after Fuuko saves Andy from Victhor, that's when the dynamic starts to change a little bit. Fuuko saved Andy. She got him back. And Andy FOR SURE saw that. She wasn't some brat to him anymore. Does he love her at this point? No. But he definitely respects her and wants to continue to protect her. He doesn't JUST see her as a personal asset anymore.
And we are that in the Unrepair arc, when Fuuko gets hit by Rip's scalpel, Andy loses it and has to collect himself before returning to the fight, not only that is that Fuuko had to reassure him that she was fine.
Tumblr media
Fuuko is not a damsel in distress and Andy sees that, allowing her to fight alongside him (even if she is just piggybacking). Andy recognizes that he can be stronger with her Unluck and it makes me so damn happy that she isn't cast on the sidelines during fights (thank you tozuka)
ANYWAYS
Autumn arc is where we start cooking, fr. Fuuko admits she loves Andy. Is she in love with him? No. But she is starting to fall. She spent 10 years with him in that damned book. And Andy definitely loved her too. They helped each other grow. And when they came out of that book they were stronger than ever.
Before Fuuko goes with Under, it was blatantly obvious that Andy did not want her to go. At this point, he does not like being away from her at all. But there is a huge amount of trust there so he lets her go.
Tumblr media
But man's was STRESSIN the whole time she was gone, not sleeping or nothing until her heard from her. Not only that is Fuuko admits that she is in love with Andy, realizing it now that she has been away from him for only a couple days. Not only that is Unchaste doesn't work on her because she truly loves someone unconditionally.
Now, before I go into the rest of Spring and into Ragnarok, I'm gonna say that Andy does not know how to deal with his feelings. His inner dialogue and the way he speaks to Fuuko are not matching up at all. Before he admits he loves her, (God damn it I wish she heard him), he's looking back on their time together, how they both grew, how he treated her at first, etc.
Tumblr media
At the end of Spring, he admits to himself that he can't die because he can't accept Fuuko's feelings properly. And why can't he? Because he's AFRAID.
Tumblr media
But when he speaks to Fuuko he plays it off as, "now it's my turn to fall in love with you", kinda jokes around about it.
This is where I get controversial. By the time Spring ends, does Andy love Fuuko? Without a doubt, yes. Is he IN love with her? No.
Like I said, he is scared to accept her feelings. I do believe that if he could get past the barrier of his own feelings and accept her love then I truly believe he would fall head over heels with her in an instant. His feelings are what's holding him back.
So why is he so afraid? Because I think that if he admits he is in love with Fuuko and accepts Fuuko's feelings, then he won't want to die like he has wanted for 2 centuries. And if he DOES die, then he leaves behind a heartbroken Fuuko.
I mean, come on, Fuuko gets shanked and Andy absolutely loses his shit. That's love.
Tumblr media
I PISSED that Andy and Fuuko never got their proper talk before the Loop happened. But I'm hoping that when Andy decides to get his ass off the fucking sun (kidding), then we have a real talk between them because I'll tell you I am so sick of licking these anfuu crumbs off the fucking floor. (Bring my boy home)
(now I do think, at some point during the Ragnarok arc, he doesn't want to die anymore. His astral projection is that of an old man. He just wants to grow old.)

Ouji-sama ni wa Doku ga Aru - By Jun Yuzuki (7.5/10)
Tumblr media
It's great when an author takes a silly premise to the next level. Comedy is hard to balance, but there's a good mix here. Excellent best friend side characters. A genuinely motherly female lead that is the quintessential "mom friend". Makeovers. Cross dressing. A kind of decent portrayal of bisexuality? Wow. This could have been a gem, but there are a few glaring flaws.
Souta is a beautiful boy. People try to confess to him every day. He's a deadly kind of beauty that defies gender...and he's spoiled. His best friend, Rizu, spoils him too much. So, he acts overly cute even though he's almost 16.
Tumblr media
There is ALOT of cross dressing in this manga. It's kind of presented in a fetishistic way. Kinda? But the other students are very supportive of his hobby. Rizu also thinks he looks amazing as a girl. His genderless charm is a running gag. Souta makes lots of men fall for him...to keep them away from Rizu. When Rizu decides to get a boyfriend he puts on a wig, and seduces the guy. It's kinda heartbreaking because the guy Rizu chose is really nice. He honestly breaks up with her and says he's fallen for someone else.
Then Souta takes off the wig. He sneers and leaves two broken hearts in his wake.
Tumblr media
Souta is mega toxic, but he and Rizu are a good couple. Eventually. I swear. Souta uses a girl to make Rizu jealous. It works. The cute girl is actually Rizu's stalker. That stalker is a genuine lesbian with feelings for Rizu. She's also kind of one of the worst characters in the series. Every scene with her in it is worse because of her specifically. I don't like her. Firstly she's a negative representation of a lesbian. I've seen way too many "predatory and clingy" lesbian characters. I know exactly why it's a thing and I don't like it. Miyu isn't a real romantic prospect. She's a joke. Miyu goes on a fake date with Souta to get information about Rizu...because she's that blindly obsessed.
Tumblr media
Romance with a fully grown adult is fine though. Rizu's new teacher is a hottie...who eventually confesses to her. Yup. Call the police. He's not a serious romantic contender either. He's just an obstacle for Souta to punch, but...ugh...this character is also attracted to Souta. He likes pretty people. He starts to like Rizu because she's so kind. He also gets way too much screen time. He romantically puts his job on the line to confess...to a 15 year old girl.
Excuse me I need to go throw up.
Anyway the teacher character thankfully becomes more and more of a joke. He fights with Souta alot...and Souta's fans start shipping him with the hot teacher.
Extra gross.
Tumblr media
The gross fujoshi girls that ship real people start harassing Rizu. They treat Souta like an idol that isn't allowed to date just because he cross dresses and is handsome etc. It's sick. I was happy when they were confronted for their shitty behavior, but then it's also a joke. The girls blush and faint when he yells at them...because his anger is hot.
Tumblr media
The second half of the story is much, much better than the first. It would be a 9/10 if I was magically allowed to cut out ten chapters. By the midway point Souta is frustrated. He loves being pampered, but he wants Rizu to see him as a man. He is also tired of lying. He barely knows what his real personality is under his mask. He thinks she will be afraid of him if he reveals his true self, and he's actually right. Souta is a horny, possessive, unreasonable and selfish teenage boy that acts cute on purpose. He does it specifically so he can cling to Rizu and watch her all the time. He gets away with shit that guy friends usually aren't allowed to do. His friendship with Rizu is very unhealthy. They don't have healthy boundaries, but that's what he wants. He has trapped himself under his own cute persona.
Tumblr media
When Rizu was young Souta was her closest friend....right? She has been with Souta for a long time, but there was another boy. A cute boy. A different boy. Souta doesn't look very cute in his old photos. Rizu realizes, with horror, that her cute friend form primary school isn't Souta.
Why the hell is Souta pretending to be that boy?
He's just a complete yandere that's why.
Tatsumi is Rizu's second cousin. He comes from a wealthy family, that neglected him. Rizu's mother took care of him for a while. Rizu took care of him too. That's where she got her motherly personality. Then, Tatsumi had to return to his parents. He learned to draw Rizu, and then his callous parents respected his talent. They aren't loving, but they were willing to send him to art school.
Rizu doesn't know any of that. Souta literally manipulated her into forgetting her first love. How? Well, poor little Rizu was traumatized after her closest friend left forever. Tatsumi wasn't allowed to contact her, because his parents are strict assholes. So, Souta started acting cute. He took on the role of Tatsumi, and Rizu eventually forgot about him.
That's....pure evil wow. Souta says he originally did it to make her smile come back. Losing Tatsumi made her depressed and stuff, but then he didn't stop. He also hid Tatsumi's love letters. He's a real bastard.
Tumblr media
Tatsumi returns looking handsome. Souta does everything he can to scare the other boy away, but Tatsumi cares about Rizu. He's kind of a womanizer now, but she was his first love. He's willing to date her and treat her right. He doesn't trust Souta.
So, Souta contacts Tatsumi's family. He lies and says Tatsumi came to Japan to slack off, and then Tatsumi is shipped back overseas.
Wait. Rizu appears at the last second. She didn’t know that Tatsumi's family was emotionally abusive. She begs him to stay, because she wants to see him happy again. Their friendship grows. Rizu realizes that she still loves Souta. She's dating him at this point. Tatsumi accepts that they will be friends maturely near the end.
Tumblr media
Near the end Souta starts acting like his true self. He gets in trouble, and his rich father tries to ship him to boarding school.
Irony.
Karma.
Take your pick.
Tumblr media
The couple elopes. Souta is pretty evil, but he's also a good boyfriend. When he's together with Rizu they shine. They're an ultra compatible happy couple when Souta's possessive nonsense doesn’t ruin the day. Souta's father realizes that his son is at least serious about getting married. He backs off a little, and then the end comes. It's summer. Rizu and Souta go to the beach with all of their friends. The creepy teacher gets booted offscreen. It's a happy ending.
(Just so you know Rizu has a pretty clear fetish for crossdressing. It's like...a big thing throughout the entire series. Souta wears a full makeup and a wig at the beach, because it's Rizu's birthday and he knows she likes it. The teacher, and several minor characters, are bisexual. Including the nice guy that dumped Rizu. The author kind of misses the mark, but there is some positive representation here.)

You’re like the only Naruro blog I follow and none of my friends have read Naruto so please I must share my thoughts with someone ;-; So I’m at about chapter 300 of the Naruto manga and this is the first time I’ve actually consumed any canon content of the series despite having dipped my toes into the fandom content before. I have a few things to get off my chest. One, I don’t really get why the fandom HATES Sakura so much. Yes, in OG Naruto, she is generally useless, but more so bc she was so sidelined completely. Her first fight against the puppet dude in Shippuden was genuinely so fun to read, and she’s actually so strong, more than I thought just based on what I’d heard prior to reading the manga!! The worst parts about the mangaka’s writing really come out when she has to deal with her feelings for Sasuke, the damsel in distress trope hits horrifying new levels of awful. If the romance hadn’t existed, I think she could have been such a better character, because then the mangaka wouldn’t have to add his such shit writing of women outside of punch heal heal medical ninja™️. (Although I will say, I do love her friendship with Naruto and I think that was written great!) Like I really do like her character but the writing is just so bad sometimes. Secondly, Sasuke. Kinda. Unbearable. I know he’s out for revenge and all that, and that he has a redemption later on but for now🥲 I can’t stand him I’m sorry 🥲. 2 edgy 4 m3. And right now, he’s kinda just. genuinely stupid. And I can’t take it. This is totally just a personal thing tho, I get that it’s a part of his character arc. Finally, I sorta get the impression that the fandom (not on tumblr but in general) really take their interpretation of characters to the extreme, and have the most one dimensional view of characters. For example, Tsunade genuinely seems like an awesome Hokage, is one of Naruto’s biggest supporters, and all the fandom sees is her boobs. Sakura is “useless” and “evil” for not returning Naruto’s feelings. They think Sasuke is a cool edgy deuteragonist who can do no wrong despite doing so many things wrong. “He tried to kill Sakura? Good!! She was useless anyway!!” So many of my views of the characters has been completely flipped on its head now that I’m actually reading the series. My view of the characters before I started reading was so skewed by an awful fandom. I really did believe that Sakura was useless, and that Hinata was somehow a better character????? And that Sasuke was actually justified in what he did, and that Tsunade was a bad hokage, to name a few. Makes me feel so stupid that I just believed it. Anyway, thats my rant! I hope this isn’t too negative or anything, but people sometimes praise this series like it’s the peak writing of all time, when there’s issues like blatant sexism (just to name one) within the writing itself and the fandom. I am really enjoying the series right now and am looking forward to what happens next!
:SCREAMS AND CLAPS VERY LOUDLY: YEAH YEAH YEAH
The women in Nar/uto are done dirty BOTH by Kish/imoto and a fair proportion of the fandom. I understand why some parts of the fandom venerate Sak/ura to make up for this and act like she was written amazingly, but I gotta admit, I find that annoying as well jhfjfgjdgjf.
Tsu/nade is honestly one of the few women in Nar/uto who I genuinely love to watch! I love that she's allowed to be messy and drunken and a gambler, but she's also got a strong head for politics, and she's amazing on the battlefield. And honestly, who better to run a country than someone who can run a hospital??? You need a similar mentality, lolololol. Like, yeah, she makes some poor decisions! As does every leader in the history of ever. But she's fun to watch and this is fantasy, so that's what counts!
Her obvious love and care for Nar/uto and Kon/oha are so sweet. The forehead kiss got me all kinds of soft. What a badass granny! I also shamelessly shipped her and Shi/zune even as a kid, shhhhh
I think I love certain interpretations of fanon!Sak/ura a lot more than canon!Sa/kura - she does have INCREDIBLE moments in the show, which I adore, and she's allowed to be both physically strong and emotionally vulnerable, which is awesome. But so much of her arc centres on Sas/uke, the edgelord who I was mildly obsessed with when I first watched at 13, but now just see as your average... well, 16/17 yo EDGELORD, and it makes me roll my eyes up into the stratosphere. The ending of her arc will never not make me cringe. Especially since she has her bangs back... like... kish/imoto... mmm. I think I'm maddest that she has SUCH POTENTIAL to be an amazing character, and it wasn't really tapped into - it felt like she was constantly sidelined to focus on the boys' arcs.
As for Sas/uke himself... A lot of his fans will happily ignore every awful thing he does just because he absolutely has a point about Kon/oha being terrible and needing reform (am I still pissed about how very little of importance changed in Bor/uto??? maybe so.... put the fucking frontline fighting age up to 18 at least, jfc). Like - don't get me wrong! I love that he does terrible things! I think he deserves to be a little bit unhinged, and it kinda suits his character as, again a 16/17 yo edgelord. That's just what they're like. But he's very much an Ends Justify The Means guy and I can't take anyone seriously who argues that a vengeful, bloodthirsty child becoming dictator of all ninjalands would've been the better option, actually.
THANK YOU FOR RANTING, I love to hear it!

One of the things that sucks about having such a divided fandom is that it kinda makes it feel like discussion 'across the gap' is pointless. This is the only fandom that I have ever actually blocked people in.
When someone comments on a post in a seemingly mostly innocuous way, and then you look at their blog and it's all anti stuff and it's like. Do you bother having the discussion knowing it'll go nowhere and they're probably just baiting you, or do you try to engage and hope it's the 1% chance it'll actually be an interesting discussion?
I still feel some sort of weird guilt over it because on principle it feels a bit wrong to cultivate an echo chamber. But also, it's fandom and it's just for fun and in this fandom it's not fun to engage.
I am just Old Enough to remember forum discussions where we'd spend 20+ pages debating something, it'd be knock down drag out and sometimes get heated, but it never felt bad or personal the way anti nonsense in the MDZS fandom does. I don't know if it's just different age demographics or taste preferences (most of my other fandoms have been dark to grimdark fantasy novels where literally nobody cares about morality that much, or anime/manga series where literally nobody cares about morality that much, or games in fantasy settings with dark themes... where nobody cares about morality that much... etc). Is it the romance element? The translation factor (being that I'm primarily interacting with English-language fans and so we're always a step or five removed from truly understanding the source material).
This is the only fandom I've been in where some people seem to impute some sort of moral judgement based on character preferences and it's wild to me. That's never happened with other books I've discussed. For example, one of the most universally loved characters in western dark fantasy is Glokta (from Joe Abercrombie's The First Law trilogy, which I read and enjoyed but am not like a super fan of - as a whole it was just okay for me - however Glokta specifically is an absolute stand-out as a character). Everyone I know loves Glokta, even my vegan friend who literally rescues bunnies as a hobby.
Glokta is just Literally Worse than Jiang Cheng in pretty much every way (love him for that). And yet 'I love Glokta' is one of the most unanimous, bland, and uncontroversial declarations you can make on a fantasy discussion board/subreddit. Even people who didn't particularly care for the books like Glokta. At best you'll have people say "eh, it just crossed a line for me when he did XYZ so I can't like him" but not "oh my god you're a horrible person for liking him, you're a TORTURE APOLOGIST!!!"
I don't mind being told I'm wrong about a point (with some sort of evidence) or 'hey, does this passage from page X change your interpretation if you reread it in Y context?' or whatever. Even among people who enjoy Jiang Cheng there are a variety of takes and flavors and points on various things and I enjoy the debates and different angles very much! Sometimes I find myself liking interpretations that directly dovetail with my own; not necessarily contradictory, but a reading that's going off in a very different direction.
But there's a certain point at which it feels pointless to engage, where it's just never going to be productive or interesting because the underlying reading is just fundamentally so different that it feels like a truly separate book.
Anyway the point is that I don't mind being disagreed with but sorry if I block you after seeing that all your reblogs are anti stuff because at this point taking the bait will just trigger all of my "someone is WRONG on the INTERNET!!!!" reflexes or whatever and ain't nobody got time for that.
Edit: oops, I left out a word...

I am nothing if not a Kagihira rambler. You have been warned.
Rewatching sasaki to miyano and the way Hirano reacts to what Sasaki tells him about their relationship is so fascinating.
In particular I just saw the part before the culture festival where Hirano overheard them basically planning a date and he remarks that Sasaki confessed way back before summer break and Miyano still hasn’t answered. He says like “couldn’t [Miyano] have just said no for right now to make things easier?” (Eng dub btw, though similar sentiment in the sub and manga) And sasaki replies that he can wait even if there’s just a chance and Hirano like blushes and they carry on whatever. This takes place in October, 8 months after the latest Hirano to Kagiura chapters, which have been around Valentine’s Day.
So anyways, while I fear this and subsequent kagihira crumbs in sasamiya means they still aren’t together by then, idk how much will be retconned or whatever cause kagihira originally wasn’t gonna get together til after high school but then Harusono sensei decided to make Hirano to Kagiura so who knows which Kagihira moments/reactions in Sasaki to Miyano will end up canon. Anyways that’s not the point I’m still going to briefly analyze this reaction of his.
So obviously, if you have a KagiHira addled brain like mine, you might realize that what he says here is exactly what he did with Kagiura. He says no immediately to get it over with, because that’s how he felt in the moment so why drag it out? even when he’s still kinda thinking about it the same ways Miyano was. He’s confused by Miyano waiting to answer because he considers anything that’s not a yes to be a no, even when there’s nuance. Hirano obviously cares about Kagi the same if not more than Miyano did Sasaki, he just doesn’t have the brain to seriously consider a romantic relationship like Miyano did.
tangent —I think… Hirano has very interesting views on romance. He hasn’t been in a romantic relationship and he presumedly has never had a crush on anyone. He’s an only child and we don’t know what his parents are like. He most likely has some ingrained comphet. All of this is probably what makes him consider Kagi as more of a little brother at the start of the series. He doesn’t know what siblings or lovers act like, and since Kagi’s a boy in his comphet brain he’s like “oh little brother. Of course” even when everyone else around him is like “no???? That’s not how siblings act????” We also don’t know like anything about past friendships so who knows what he considers normal for friends. But considering how he treats his current friends, aka sasaki and crew, he must be at least somewhat aware that his relationship with Kagi is different, therefore the brother thought.—tangent over :)
Anyways then there’s Hirano’s reaction to what Sasaki says in response, being that he’s fine with waiting, given that Miyano is seriously considering his feelings and cares about him regardless. He’s kind of taken aback, and even blushes a little, and it just makes me wonder if he thought about Kagi in that moment. I think he must’ve compared himself to Miyano, being the one who was confessed to, and so Kagi must have similar feelings to Sasaki too. Like “oh does Kagi feel like that?” Idk. I’m losing coherence do y’all get what I’m saying. I hope so. I just. The Kagihira crumbs in Sasaki to Miyano make me crazy. Especially considering we don’t know how canon those crumbs are in the timeline. Okay time to go write another post cause I had more thoughts that got too unrelated to this bye :

I READ GO FOR IT AGAIN NAKUAMURA BECAUSE BARNES AND NOBLES HAS SOME GAY SHIT THAT I LIKE!!
Anyway here's a quick review of it. Like quick because I like to think about it to get my feelings towards something right. Like at first I loved Godzilla 2014 and THEN I just kinda liked it weeks later and I want to reread the first volume.
Anyway back to the quick review. It was good and I liked it. Syundei is an amazing artist and Iove the old artstyle the mangaka has which is seen in their other works. Also before you get curious and look into their other work here's a trigger warning.
TW SHIT GETS FUCKED UP
But not in Nakamura not a concerning amount at least. Its just nice, simple and to be honest I completely forget about Hirose since Nakamura is an entertaining character to read and see. Also I guess he is kinda relatable in a lot of ways. A gay student in a practically hetero normative environment is relatable to me or a younger me at least. With a notable moment being where he tries to come to terms with his crush being in a relationship with a girl in the school. (also I'm pretty sure Nakamura gets a bisexual panic attack in the first book which makes me love the guy more)
My man Nakamura looking all serious while practically being in a state of panic internally makes me really root for the guy. What else, what else. Oh! I guess I should mention the concerning amount thing from earlier. Hirose has a crush on his teacher and generally I don't like it when a series does something like that but it would also be hypocritical of me as a certified milf enjoyer. But in retrospect I think its handled a lot better in this series compared to others with Hirose having a one sided crush on a teacher. Hopefully it's one sided again the teacher isn't helping but again if it's a one sided crush cool and if its more I'll probably buy the next volume just to see what would happen.
A small part I do like though is when Nakamura gets a haircut that makes him look completely different to everyone. It's only page BUT for some reason it sticks out.
It's honestly hard to review BL (my name get it) because I don't read a lot of it that doesn't end with fucking at the end if it. And romance is something I try not to touch but I do hope that at some point Syundei does have Nakamura and Hirose actually being a couple and not just ending it after they get together. Which I assume is normal for most romance manga to end when the relationship finally starts. If the first volume is the start of their friendship than it feels like the second is more so exploring Nakamura. I wonder if he's actually gonna go for it next volume so like in a year, and if he does I hope we see the relationship.
This will likely change when I reread volume 1 and 2.

I'm a bakudeku shipper too, but sadly I think Hori's gonna use the fight to push the izuocha endgame :( Hope he doesn't do that. Would be even better if Deku gets to know Toga's idea of love and realizes his feelings for kacchan. Doubt that it would happen though, it's a shounen manga, very unlikely for legit LGBTQ+ main character
Oh anon, look at this can of worms you’ve just opened! They’re squirming all over the table! Ah!
lol I have so many thoughts about this (some borrowed from others). I’ve been meaning to spend a little time on it, so thank you for bringing it up.
If you wish to view this opened can of worms ->
Tumblr media
First things first, you’re so right. Before I got into this series and I was deciding whether to start, I heard all over about how it’s well-executed shounen through and through—not anything super original, but nicely distilled. That may be all there is to it. And yeah queer main characters in this category of manga are almost nonexistent. (keyword: almost!*) So it would be naive to expect anything. The validity of my argument here could live and die in the next week for all I know.
However, and this is nothing on you anon, but I can’t overlook how your point gets brought up by certain homophobic people in the fandom, and they stretch it to the point of not so subtly implying that queer rep and “manga for teenage boys” are incompatible. That we don’t belong here. And moreover, according to them, Japan would never. That is a categorically unfair assessment, which suggests Japan is monolithically conservative and incapable of diversity and change. That’s uh, kinda fucked up! There are all kinds of people in all kinds of places, and what do they know, anyway, as westerners? Not their place to judge. Only about 8 years ago the US got their first main queer couple on a kids cartoon, and only about 7 years ago got marriage equality nationwide.
Let’s also talk about the use of “shounen” as a pseudo-genre. It’s not a genre because it doesn’t really tell you anything about the setting (fantasy, action, slice of life, etc.), just a set of possible tropes and norms that are likely present. But it is, when it comes down to it, a marketing thing. I speak only of what I know about the publishing industry in the US, but age categories like Young Adult are all about the publishers trying to cater to what they perceive the audience of the story will be, and whatever norms arise from that are based on what they think will sell, and then it’s a self fulfilling prophecy, because that’s what the audience comes to expect. From an author’s point of view, that can be frustrating. You may want to write for a certain age group, but resent the fact that your publisher is insisting that means you have to do things a certain way. What I’m saying is, individual mangaka can have ideas about what they want in their story that are separate from industry norms. Statistical probability may be against us, but Horikoshi is a single roll of the dice. He has stated in interviews and volume notes that he doesn’t believe anything is off limits to him, and that he relishes doing what makes him happy no matter what. Also… I can’t believe I’m saying this, and I absolutely do NOT want to speculate, but we technically don’t know that he is even cishet himself. Either way, he is just one person, writing from his own experience and interest.
There is a lot of value, I think, in incidental representation, where the overall story doesn’t have to be about queerness or even romance. It shows the reality that we can exist anywhere. Why not have a queer couple in an action shounen? They’d just as soon pair up a guy and a girl for no real reason, so why does this have to be different? Regardless of the the outcome in this case, don’t let anyone say you don’t belong here or that you’re being unrealistic. Remember too that inserting headcanon rep is queer tradition, a form of rebellion and self love they can’t take away no matter what canon is.
That all being said, I see bnha like this: a story which is embedded in a world of tropes and themes but not necessarily beholden to them is in a unique position. Horikoshi watches a lot of movies, apparently. He likes Star Wars and of course super heroes, and takes inspiration from other well known shounen. This level of familiarity can actually position you to better critique and/or perfect the patterns within the things you’re a fan of. And I think Horikoshi is doing that.  Here’s the real kicker: giving your audience the impression that you’re going along with a trope means that you can more effectively break it, to play with the audience’s expectations. Take All Might for example. He’s the wise mentor who bestows his power on the mc, but he is also almost comically, pathetically awkward as a teacher (bless him) and he represents a hero society that has become too reliant on one person whose shoes should not in fact be filled by yet another Atlas. The arc where Katsuki gets kidnapped is another example, because it made people expect Horikoshi to follow the storyline of Naruto. But oops! No Katsuki as Sasuke.
I don’t feel delusional in saying Horikoshi is pretty self aware with his choices, and to go for the underdeveloped obligatory straight ship would genuinely be uncharacteristically thoughtless of him. Like, I don't even consider it compatible with the phrase “well-executed shounen” at this point. There was a time in the story when it could have been done well, but that potential has been severely neglected. Maybe then the most likely scenario is no canon ships at all. As for actual representation beyond a few subtle/minor characters, it’s a matter of how far he would be willing and able to go, and that I don’t know. None of us do. I just don’t see the harm in hoping.
*footnote: the “almost” is basically because of the manga also published by Jump called Blue Flag/Ao no Flag. I like to affectionately call it straightbait. Which is to say, it plays with the audience’s expectations. And that’s all I’ll say on why it’s relevant here. You connect the dots!

What Did I Watch: #19
What a joy to watch something that was beautiful to look at even though it's still dumb at its center? But even with archetypal story, I love Semantic Error. It was your typical enemies to lovers. It was believable to the point, yeah it could happen to the most of us. Unless well we're not gonna come across somebody like Jang Jaeyoung for god's sake. It was too good to be true.
Despite the conventional trope, I must say this series has one of the most gorgeous frame out there. I'm not only talking about the framing, but the lighting, colors, focus, and the movement, everything seemed had meaning in which correlating with the characters. The colors sometimes in your face and sometimes sneak through and fades away before you know it. I respect those who knows how to deal with their camera regardless of the minimum budget. Super proud of what they did for the entire episode 7. Purple was all over the screen and not once I felt irritated. It was necessary to show audiences their heart eventually leads to one another. Because blue is belong to Sangwoo and Red is Jaeyoung's color. Red plus blue means purple. Genius.
Whoever designed beautiful shots on this deserves to get raise. It was so thought out and you just can feel it every frame has meanings. It could generate discussion, hell you could just use some of its takes into film studies.
And I might say, this is one of the best that Korea offered. It's going to be tough to beat this (fingers crossed on To My Star S2 though).
Tumblr media
There had been discourse in here, regarding that twist in Enchanté. You know what I'm talking about. For me personally, I like the twist, it was rational, it brought a new depth to the characters. It certainly a thing that moves the plot forward and now I rather skeptical with how they're going to end the story in 2 episodes.
Back to the twist, I don't really want to call it a twist because I kinda already predicted it would going that way, instead the other way. Because personally if the twist went the other way, it just lazy writing. But, the twist itself it wasn't genius per se. At least, it gave Theo a motivation from the beginning and a realistic reason for him to did that. What I'm trying to convey is at least it does not make us feel stupid and not mocking our brain ah. That's the least a goddamn series should do.
Perhaps the problem was laying on how dialogue evolved after the revealed of the twist. The confession was written badly because it was just too ordinary. I could find hundreds of copycats in straight movies. For 2 people like Force and Book who got the acting chops and explosive chemistry this was easy. Way too easy. Even the kiss, it was hot but got edited in some kind of soap opera-ish and I was like P' Film l, you could have done it better.
Anyway, I don't really have problems with Enchanté except it still fall into the usual BL trope you always watched. It's predictable.
Tumblr media
And that's bring me to Cutie Pie. Oh my god. I can choose not to watched it. But sometimes, we people keep making bad decisions for ourselves.
This is yaoi. This is your manga in early 20s, which is not my cup of tea. I prefer my BL when it isn't making an effort to become a proper BL. Not Me for example. Or all the danmei adaptation from China. Because the story can still work even the romance is being subverted. The story does not stand on the usual BL trope. Meanwhile in Cutie Pie, the romance is taking on the front row and when you taking that out, you got nothing left.
Maybe I'm watching too many gritty and realistic stuff but the premise itself is just doesn't make any sense. Unless, come back to point one, you're living in yaoi manga pages. Or you're feeling nostalgic. Yet, I don't grow up in full blown yaoi household. My encounter with yaoi wasn't come from manga. It was from manhwa, which yes a lot of grittier, darker, and full of mentally unstable characters. We know for sure that yaoi was created by straight female and sometimes fetishize the whole gay community and this one probably doesn't have any different. It's clearly written by straight female to cater straight audiences.
I like Zee, he was good in suits and that's my shallow reason why I watched Cutie Pie. But lord, I was struggling to finish it. I'm still on episode 1 3/4 going to 4/4. I wonder, when will I be able to just sit and watch without asking why the fuck this and that happened on the first place?
I mean if you grow up with yaoi manga, you sure want to check this out, either way you're going to end up like me perhaps. It's okay but I have so many conflicted feelings. Maybe if I can resort my feelings in order, perhaps I could resume this. Maybe I just need to watch Zee's face and not feeling so much guilty when the plot literally crashed.

@sweetgums the worst sin was out of all the chages, yako's character suffered the worst.
Oh yes! Which I think is actually related to the fact they changed how her father's case went! And a lot of the other cases!
Also... This ended up turning into a little essay... Sorry bout that. You got me thinking about where the anime went wrong as an adaptation.
In the manga, her father's case is solved right away and, afterwards, Yako's like "huh! That was really interesting and I'm glad that happened. I just wish I'd been more useful!", then Neuro pops his head back in and goes "hippity hoppity, your time is now my property". The more mysteries she experiences, the greater drive she has to be involved. She's self-motivated... Kinda. I think the chapter just after she meets X (I just reread it, so it's fresh in my brain) for the first time shows the audience that, sure, Neuro is dragging her along, but she does actually want to be a part of this.
The writers for the anime, however, seemed to decide that Yako having a genuine interest after getting a taste wasn't a strong enough motivation to deal with Neuro. Which... I love Neuro, but I don't think I'd want to experience him. It's understandable, however, having her motivation for being involved rely on waiting for Neuro to solve her father's case does make her own characterization and growth suffer.
Besides changing the mystery of her father's death, I think pushing back the Aya Asia case was a big sign that the anime did not care for Yako's development. The two anime original mysteries following episode 1 were nothing but fluff. The Hime case in particular was a waste! If Matsui had written it, I'm sure he would have had things to say about parasocial relationships! It also could have been an easy way for Yako to get more involved in the cases rather than having her wave it off "oh, I'm not good at that sort of thing". The Comedy case... I don't know how you could really salvage that one to be narratively useful... Maybe use that one to tease X before officially introducing them?? But pushing Aya off until episode 10 was Not Good.
The anime only had 20-some episodes versus the manga's 202 chapters. They should have made every single episode count. However, there are at least 4 anime original mysteries (ugh, the lake one) plus the hot mess of an ending.
Also... I'm gonna throw it out there, the anime also cheated Neuro out of his character progression too. Not as badly as Yako, but yes... And I think Godai, too. As the arc with Mochizuki and the Hayasaka brothers was a pivotal moment for his character. Everyone was robbed! I don't think we even got to see how truly unhinged Sasazuka can be! But Yako did suffer the worst. Like, Matsui was out here doing the Lord's work in the mid-00s, giving us a female protagonist in Shonen Jump with amazing character growth and not sexualizing her or giving her a bad romance subplot (even if most of the fandom ships her and Neuro anyway) and the anime just has to go and mess that all up!
Madhouse! Please remake this series! It's been over 10 years and you can use the success of Assassination Classroom to advertise it!

One Punch Man ship reviews bc I’m bored
WARNING: BIG ONE PUNCH MAN WEBCOMIC AND MANGA SPOILERS
GenoSai: do I even have to say it?? They compliment each other so well and are already besties. They make me so happy and I love their love. Genos literally came into Saitama’s life and brought so much new life and excitement when Saitama thought he’d never get any. Genos gives him love and appreciation all the time and never abandons him. Saitama isn’t connected to his feelings, but he cares about Genos and would do just about anything for him, to keep him safe. Genos constantly teases Saitama and Saitama grumbles and takes it with some banter, Genos is super emotional and Saitama does his best to comfort him, they fucking love shopping together and just hanging out period, they talk about the dumbest shit and somehow they still understand each other with the one brain cell they both share. It takes Genos forever to realize his feelings are deeper and Saitama has to be TOLD by their friends that he should fucking realize his feelings already. Just...I could keep going but I’ll stop! 2718873737839439/10 (let’s not talk about the age gap btw, 6 years isn’t bad and Genos is a legal adult.)
FubuSai: the stereotypical straight ship ppl gravitate to. Eh. I can see it, but at the same time I feel like they don’t completely compliment each other. Are they a hot couple? Duh. But I feel like their pride and communication issues would get in the way. 4/10
TatsuSai: hnghhhh. Someone mentioned this before, can’t remember who, but Saitama literally thinks she’s a child in canon. So that just....makes it gross. Same problems as FubuSai but worse. I’d rather see them as hesitant friends w a weird bond. 0/10
SonSai/SonicSai/idk the ship name: eh, toxic. Cant see them getting past communication issues and pride, again. Plus Sonic wants to kill his ass. Also, I just feel no romantic tension?? Even in fanfic it just falls flat for me. 3/10
MumenSai: a favorite!! Wish I saw it more, it’s very cute. Mumen is so kind and would absolutely be there to help him w self esteem and just help him be a better person period. And Saitama would have a cute little kind guy to tease and open up to. I could maybe see Mumen’s kindness getting on Saitama’s nerves when he’s in a bad mood bc Mumen almost never snaps and Saitama feels shittier, or maybe Mumen being mad at Saitama for being kinda lazy at home while Mumen is working his ass off and he’s like babe I just got home, please stop playing the fucking game and pay attention to me I have a concussion again. Prob too nitpicky on this one, heh, but 8.4/10
Genos x Sonic: wtf? As a crack ship, sure. That’s hilarious. But as a serious ship, 1.3/10 bc I could MAYBE see them bond over their love of my chemical romance or sum.
Anyone x Puri: -128382839287473828739219833468282/10. Fuck Puri.
TatsuKing: eh. Indifferent on this one too. I can see them getting along and Tatsu being the mean but supportive gf in public, but a sweet gf in private. King could be like her calm oasis of video games and sweet blonde shy bf. I sway more towards ace/aro King and queer non binary Tatsu, but this is still good. 6/10
FubuPsy/Fubuki x Psykos/idk: hell yeah!! This series NEEDS more wlw ships, both for me to project onto and to cry over. Prob my fav Fubuki ship, cuz they’ve known each other since they were young and had a tenuous friendship. I didn’t use to ship it until I saw that scene in the wc after the MA arc (u know the one) but here we are. They’re big personalities so any interaction is bound to be chaotic at first, but I really think they’d work. Pride put to the side, Psykos could be someone for Fubuki to finally rely on other than the Blizzard Bunch, someone to confide in, a badass partner to fight monsters with, talk about nothing for hours with, be a super fashionable #girlboss couple with, and someone who would really see her for who she is-especially w Psykos knowledge of her from the past. Hell, Psykos might even know her better than Tatsumaki. Fubuki could be an anchor to her like she currently is in the wc, providing a quiet comfort and making her open up little by little. Would prob be toxic at first bc of the MA arc and their desire for power, but is a very good ship I think. 9/10
Speedal/Sonic x Mumen: an old fav! Sonic would have a hard time not hating Mumen at first bc he’s the picture definition of a hero, sum he hates. But hanging out with him would show him Mumen is a GOOD guy genuinely and he’d be like ohhhh shit I’m in love w this man. Mumen would thoroughly appreciate someone to make him live a little, break some rules and stand up to ppl when they talk over him. He’d DEFINITELY be upset when finding out Sonic is an assassin, but would prob be conflicted bc he knows Sonic is a good person despite that. Would prob make Sonic give up on killing for them to be together. Sucks bc of the assassin thing and bc they haven’t met in canon! So we’re not sure how they’d interact with each other, sigh. 7.4/10
Okamaitachi x Bushidrill: a very underrated ship! To be clear, I headcanon Kama as a trans woman and so does most of the fandom. Anyway, very sweet and already built as a friendship bc of their partnership under Atomic Samurai. I can’t remember who writes fic and makes art of them on tumblr but AAAAA it’s so good! Very sweet. Basically depicted Bushi as a nervous himbo who’s honest about his feelings but scared to say them and Kama as a sweet lady who’s crazy about Bushi. Very sweet. Want more of them!! 6.1/10
OneZon/Zombieman x One Shotter: never even thought of the ship till I saw @megidolan art work! Very wholesome, and from what little we know of Shotter we know he’s a sort of nervous yet strong willed guy, and Zombieman would totally help him calm down bc he’s so chill. I could see them sharing cigarettes and talking shit on heroes while cuddling u know? 7/10 only because I don’t see enough of it but very good concept.
Mumarou/Mumen x Garou: a lot of ppl are gonna hate me for this but....I don’t like it. I’ve tried! I just—idk. I’ve read so many good fics about them that make me like it a bit, but the concept is just eh. I think their relationship is, in most reps, really cliche angsty stuff. I wish I could elaborate I just...gah! Basically, there’s better ships for the both of them imo. Sorry!! 4.3/10
Sonic x Flashy/SonFlash: yes!! Prob my fav Sonic ship. They have soooo much tension, it’s almost worse than Genos’ tension w Saitama. Flashy LITERALLY poisoned Sonic so that he wouldn’t be forced to kill him at the ninja graduation. He cares. They’ll never say it out loud, but they care. They have someone who understands what they went through in each other and someone they’re both so similar to, yet so different from. Sonic is more vocal about his expressions and let’s people know it while Flashy often keeps things to himself, they could really influence the other to be more this or that. I could see a lot of comfort with these two, and not much is needed for relationship development; they already have so much unspoken between them after meeting for the first time in years. Love it. Wish I saw it more! 10/11
KingSai: wonderful! Out of the few ppl Saitama is close to, def my second fav pick for a ship for him. There’s a post saying how Saitama doesn’t cut King off when he’s going on rants about games and stuff bc he’s talking TO Saitama, not at him like Genos tends to do on accident. They’re already great buddies! Saitama could find a shy gamer man who he can talk to about manga and stuff and also a passionate bf who could break out of his shell w Saitama and be himself with no lies. King can have someone to protect him, duh, someone who finally understands his weird sense of humor, and someone to shower him in the love and kindness he deserves when Saitama is in the mood to be all out like that w his affections. Plus he’s Saitama’s anchor and brings him back down when he’s super anxious and depressed and tells him what’s up that he needs to fix without sugarcoating it. Would def have a bunch of inside jokes and go on dates that are just staying inside playing video games all night. Domestic af. 10/10
Fubuki x Mizuki: my first wlw Fubuki ship! Hard to find but very good. Mizuki is this big ball of kindness, energy, and raw power that would make Fubuki go ‘Ohhhhhhh, big pretty lady make brain go brrr.’ I could see Mizuki grounding Fubuki when she’s in over her head, giving her random gifts bc she saw sum and thought of her, doing a marathon run and wildly waving at Fubuki in the crowd, and all around being a dependable woman confident in herself and in love with a mysterious esper. Prob a little shy when it comes to anything physical bc she loves Fubuki so much and is overwhelmed by the realness of being w her. Fubuki gives Mizuki advice on ‘acting like a proper hero’ or whatever and though Mizuki thinks she doesn’t need it, Fubuki still helps her a lot w her career and being taken more seriously by others. Would give Mizuki someone who loves her for who she is and would go wild on her in private when she can be open about her affection, would be someone Mizuki could exercise with and listen intently to Mizuki’s physical knowledge, and would absolutely bandage her when she’s all banged up. Hnghh love this ship. It’s only behind the FubuPsy ship juuuuust a little bc they haven’t met in canon so we can’t be sure about their interactions and stuff. 8.8/10, I love WOMEN
Batarou: how could I go this far without mentioning them?! They have SOOOO much tension in the centichoro fight, like come on. Both snarky assholes who are huge softies one the inside, Badd being the more logical one (still a himbo, tho) and Garou being the more chaotic one. Probably take forever to admit their feelings bc they’re so prideful and stupid <3 flirt through constant wrestling matches and it takes Genos saying ‘they should kiss already, they’re getting on his nerves’ for them to finally realize what’s up. (@rayadraws has a great au where Garou Genos and Badd are a chaotic friend squad and Genos is the only brain of the group, haha. Very good au y’all check it out!) Would constantly pick on each other affectionately and switch into concerned SO when the other is hurt like the big teddy bears they are. Raise Zenko together for sure. Garou would fumble being romantic and Badd would find it both hilarious and cute. 11/12
Zombie mask/Amai x Zombieman:
So. I don’t like Amai Mask and I used to hate him, BUT the webcomic and fic have really helped me calm down on him (he’s still a dick tho), so it’s easier to want to ship him and stuff. Bc of Amai’s anger issues and controlling behavior, I could see this relationship being super toxic and icky—but I think they have some form of understanding that pulls Amai back from being a complete dick, you know? Start off as fuck buddies and slowly form something else from spending companionable time together other than screwing. Zombieman pulls Amai back from his angry fits and soothes him over with his logic. Talk maaaaaad shit about heroes, but only when they’re alone because Zombieman knows Amai will talk loud af about the heroes they’re roasting and Zombie doesn’t wanna stop a fight from happening. Zombieman loves making Amai flustered and has a secret check list in his head of all the things that get Amai red faced. Loves to listen to Amai rant about things for hours and loves to watch his face go through almost cartoon like expressions as he talks. He won’t admit it, but Zombie loves to be spoiled by Amai’s shit tons of cash and often takes rides in Amai’s limos when he wants to smoke and think to himself. Amai has a hard time realizing how his feelings have changed, but gets hit hard with it when he wakes up to Zombie making them breakfast one morning while wearing Amai’s underwear. Amai also loves to spoil Zombie and takes him out to restaurants and buys him cool new weapons on the weekends. @batneko has pretty much gotten me into this ship and I strongly suggest looking at their works! 7.9/10
DemonKnight/Genos x Zero/Drive Knight: I’m pretty sure this used to be a crack ship before the past like 10 manga chapters—and now here we are! Not a fav bc 1. ZERO LEFT GENOS TO SELF DESTRUCT AFTER THEY COMBINED TO FORM THE FUCKING JET HE WAS JUST LIKE lol bye SO LIKE if he left him to die that’s super hard for me to forgive and ship grrr 2. Disregarding the manga’s canon and looking at the wc, while I love the little trip they went on where Zero demonstrated his abilities and helped Genos kill monsters, it’s super sus. He knew alllll of this info on Metal Knight and was super supportive and understanding when Genos said he needed time to think. Like,,,what are his intentions? We know so little about him—is he trying to trick Genos or was he being sincere? THAT STUFF ASIDE, they’re a really fun ship. They’re both huge fucking nerds and can keep up with their talk on robotics for hours, they’re both cyborgs so they understand each other’s pain, and they’re both super cool and angsty. I think they could really settle into a deep bond that can go platonic or romantic, just depends. Genos needs more ppl in his life so hell yeah! Plus, he can really let go with Zero bc they don’t have that teacher/student relationship and Zero, if he’s really a sincere and kind guy like in the wc, can be there for Genos and listen to him. Don’t have much to say on this ship other than @wellthisisembarrassing makes GORGEOUS art of them! 6.3/10
Webuiko/Suiko x Webigaza: YEAH I KNOW THEY HAVENT INTERACTED IN CANON AND WE DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THEM BUT HEAR ME OUT. Webigaza—cool af determined cyborg idol who’s surprisingly down to earth when talking with Child Emperor. Suiko—sassy and honest fighter who doesn’t take shit and is very passionate. Suiko would go to talk to Web then immediately freak out bc aaaa she’s way prettier than she thought, she can’t do this! Web would have to gently encourage Suiko to talk and at first is like ‘ah man, must be an adoring fan, ugh I’m so tired. At least she’s hot’ but when Suiko snaps out of her shyness Web is like oh! She’s super cool wtf. Always bump into each other during fights and help each other get fixed up, Suiko using her muscle power to lift Web’s pieces (and give Web a great view of Suiko’s muscles holy SHIT) and Web would patch Suiko up. Not to be stereotypical, but they’re def a masc/femme couple. I love the idea of this ship soooo much and I really hope they interact! 6.6/10 only bc they haven’t met 😭😭😭 look them up on here! There’s some great art of them by a few blogs
Dr. Kuseno x Bang: pretty sure @baldyborg came up with this one! Super cute. Just two old dudes finding a nice friendship in each other, maybe after Bang helps carry Genos to Kuseno’s after a day of fighting. Bang would find Kuseno to be a very cute little nerd man and would be sooo impressed by Kuseno’s mad scientist skills. Kuseno would be super impressed when seeing Bang in action too. They’d prob talk as soon as they meet each other and Genos would be in the background like you guys it’s been an hour, please fix me I’m on the verge of death 🧍🏻Bang would give Kuseno advice on training techniques to teach Genos and advice on making his bodies more martial arts ready or sum, meanwhile Kuseno would give his take on how to be kinder to Garou so that Bang would learn to repair the relationship with a gentleness he’s seemingly lacking (yes I’m talking about the chapter where he and Garou start fighting and Bang is just not doing enough to reach out to Garou, he’s being a callous old man! So yeah I’m still mad about that). Genos and Saitama would prob be out on a date and Saitama would be like oh theres Bang, wonder what he’s doing? Then Kuseno would walk up and kiss Bang and Genos and Sai would be shocked like SIRS 👬 Genos would tell Bang he doesn’t need another adoptive dad and Bang would be like....ok.... I see them retiring in a cottage together and Bang would become a huge softie. Yes I’m actively ignoring chapter 141 of the wc, shut up. 7.6/10
TankTop master x Mumen: they have a nice friendship going on in the manga right now! Just bros supporting bros. Tank is the picture definition of a muscly himbo and Mumen is his cute passionate bf. Also workout buddies af!! Don’t have much to say other than pretty good ship, just not a fav. 5.2/10
To sum it up—
GenoSai: 2718873737839439/10, Batarou: 11/12, SonFlash: 10/11, KingSai: 10/10, FubuPsy: 9/10, Fubuki x Mizuki: 8.8/10, MumenSai: 8.4/10, ZombieMask: 7.9/10, Dr. Kuseno x Bang: 7.6/10, Speedal: 7.4/10, OneZon: 7/10, Webuiko: 6.6/10, DemonKnight: 6.3/10, Okamaitachi x Bushidrill: 6.1/10, TatsuKing: 6/10, TankTop Master x Mumen: 5.2/10, Mumarou: 4.3/10, FubuSai: 4/10, SonSai: 3/10, Genos x Sonic: 1.3/10, TatsuSai: 0/10, anyone x Puri: -1283828319833468282/10
If there’s any ships I left out, it’s bc I don’t know them, don’t wanna talk about them, or just don’t have an opinion strong enough. Also, I know there are some poly ships like Genos x Saitama x Fubuki, but I’ve read only one fic about that (it was pretty good, here’s the link https://archiveofourown.org/works/5406992 ) so I don’t feel like talking about it. Hope no ones offended! All my opinion here :)

MHA Theory: Is a TodoDeku Ending Possible?
Okay, before BakuDeku or OchaDeku or other shippers go up in arms against me, I am not an avid shipper. The idea of shipping was cute and I adored it until I saw what hardcore shipping does to a fandom community, so I don’t ship as much as I used to. I’m looking into this as a fan of the series, not as a shipper.
That being said, this is only a theory. A My Hero Academia Theory! .... So, there is a likely chance that it won’t happen, especially since my argument that it could happen is relatively weak (imo), making it even less likely.
Anyways, let’s get to it, shall we? Warning, this theory may contain spoilers for endings of Bleach, Naruto, and maybe Fairy Tail.
But, please. Be civil. This isn’t a place to bash other ships. All ships is valid...except for those that are gross. You guys know what I mean.
In a lot of shounen anime, there’s usually a love interest for the main protagonist of the story, the main heroine. At the end of the story, they get together. Two examples are Ichigo and Orihime in Bleach, Naruto and Hinata in...Naruto, and Natsu and Lucy in Fairy Tail.
Of these great anime, One Piece is probably one of the few anime that is not going to follow this formula because a) Oda came out and said that none of the Strawhats are gonna be romantically involved with each other, and B) Luffy isn’t doesn’t seem to care much for such relationships.
(Let me say that don’t let this deter you from doing fanworks of Luffy x Nami or Sanji x Robin or any ships)
One of the things MHA is amazing with is deconstructing or even out right averting common shounen tropes. I’ll probably make a post about this in a later future.
Another thing MHA is great with showing is that we get to see men not being afraid of showing emotions
Tumblr media Tumblr media
badass women
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and
Tumblr media
Basically, MHA does its hardest to divert.
So, what if the series ends with not a heteronormative couple?
Don’t get me wrong. OchaDeku is flippin’ adorable and it must be protected and Ochako is just as precious as Izuku.
Tumblr media
I mean, yeah, Izuku still gets flustered around Ochako and the girl was shown that she has started to developed feelings for him and (for manga readers) chapter 325!
But, for the sake of this theory, it’s also kinda generic shounen. An easy argument against this is that Izuku being flustered doesn’t equal romantic feelings and you could be right. Also, keep in mind that Izuku barely had friends growing and when he first met Ochako, he was in awe that he talked to a girl.
Tumblr media
By this logic, Izuku is just being anxious about him being around girls, a typical nerd boy reaction. He does the same when Hatsume got into his personal space.
Tumblr media
So, would it being interesting for TodoDeku to happen?
Tumblr media
Izuku helped Todoroki so much during the Sports Festival and Todoroki was indeed grateful for that. And Izuku continued to support Todoroki whenever he has an issue and Todoroki would do the same for Izuku.
I’m sure some would ask about BakuDeku because of...the whole damn story! Lol!
Tumblr media
And I see your point! But, wouldn’t that be a bit cliched too? I’ll come out and say that I’m not a fan of the Childhood Romance cliché.
Really though, at the end of the day, whatever happens is up to Horikoshi. This is his story that he is writing. For all we know, Izuku may not end up with...anybody! Whatever happens - OchaDeku or whatever - I’m cool with it.
Maybe, I’ll make a post about ships and how the ships could work. Really, what was fun about ships was the potential of the relationships.

Weirdly enough, I often find myself reading less in the summer, since I have more time than I do during the rest of the year to do other things. Also artfight has been eating up more than a bit of my free time! But here’s a collection a graphic novels I sat around on the hammock reading, and some novels I finished up...
(Everyone go read All Systems Red, holy crow guys)
Tumblr media
A Whale of the Wild
The “sequel” to A Wolf Called Wander, though it doesn’t actually connect to the previous novel except in the stylistic/thematic sense. A Whale of the Wild is very much a standalone novel. And a pretty decent one! Personally, I think I liked Wolf more, but this one was a pleasant, informative read, with just the right amount of crushing dread sprinkled in. It’s about a young orca called Vega who is learning to become a new wayfinder for her pod but who still has a lot to learn, especially in an ocean that is becoming increasingly hostile to orcas and the other sealife that live alongside humans. When a devastating earthquake hits, Vega and her little brother find themselves separated from their family, lost in a now horrifyingly unfamiliar environment, and fighting starvation as the salmon that sustain them become more and more unreliable. It’s a desperate fight for survival as they search for food and their missing family. This book is written for a middle grade level, and does a really good job of putting the current environmental crisis into an animal’s perspective while giving the readers something to hope for.

The Adventure Zone: The Crystal Kingdom
Every July I eagerly anticipate the next Adventure Zone graphic novel. This one is for their fourth arc, The Crystal Kingdom, in which Magnus, Taako, and Merle respond to a SOS from a floating laboratory that is gradually being consumed by crystals and which threatens the entire world should it fall into the ocean. Carey Pietsch’s art continues to be absolutely fantastic, so beautifully and hilariously expressive, and this one delivers some great Merle moments, lots of Carey Fangbattle, and, of course, Kravtiz. Kravitz, my beloved…
Anyway, I obviously always recommend these. If you’ve never gotten into The Adventure Zone, I totally recommend either trying these graphic novels — or even better, just go listen to the podcast because it really is both hilarious and creates a shockingly good and heart-wrenching story by the end.

All Systems Red
I’ve seen The Murderbot Diaries on my dash occasionally, and it always looked interesting, but a friend’s recommendation finally compelled me to read the first novella of the series. And holy shit y’all. Absolutely the best book I’ve read this month, it’s amazing. Mind-blowingly good. Also, if you’re like me and want a good audiobook, it’s a nice three-hour listen, very chill!
Anyway, All Systems Red is about a Security Unit, an artificially created being that’s part-organic part-mechanical and all-company-owned-and-controlled. However, self-named “Murderbot” has managed to hack into the system that suppresses its own will, and is now coasting along, doing the least amount of work its job requires not to be noticed, while preferring to spend all its time watching the hours and hours of soap operas it has downloaded into its brain. And it’s a tolerable if somewhat dull life, until the science team that it's currently rented to is attacked and the whole mission goes pear-shaped. Suddenly Murderbot has to scramble to keep its humans alive… while its humans scramble with the realization that their “SecUnit” isn’t actually a mindless robot like they had all believed...
This story is both gripping and hilariously funny. Murderbot has such a unique voice and perspective and it’s an absolute pleasure to follow its story. I reallly need to read the next book...
Tumblr media
Asterix and the Banquet
A classic. I was startled when I realized I hadn’t actually read this Asterix story… but hell I’m not gonna complain, it lets me read one of the originals for the first time again! In this Asterix volume, the Indomitable Gauls and the Romans end up arranging a bet — the Romans intend to keep them under siege, trapped in their village, while Asterix is confident that he can easily evade them… and will prove it by going on a tour around all of Gaul, collecting iconic foods from each region in order to return and put on a fine banquet. So we get a fantastic adventure in which Asterix and Obelix run all over the country, pursued the whole way, while making cheerful stops at the various eateries along the way. Also the first book Dogmatix shows up in! All around, a wonderful read, fun like all the best Asterix comics are.
Tumblr media
Beauty Pop v4
A less impressive graphic novel. The first Beauty Pop is one of my guilty pleasure manga because… it really is pretty stupid but in the best possible ways. I mean, the whole thing is framed around hairstyling battles, like a shojo sports manga without the sports. It’s bonkers. Unfortunately, the series does not really manage to hold up, and it really begins to feel repetitive and dragging as it continues… as a lot of series like this do. *shrug* Unsurprising but still kinda disappointing I suppose. The building three-way romantic tension is mildly interesting if for no other reason than the main character Does Not Notice and Does Not Care about any of it, which is amusing and refreshing.
Tumblr media
FRNCK v5
Now this series only gets better and better as it goes. This is the first book of the second arc, and somehow the danger just seems to be ramping up and up and up. The cavefamily have lost their home… as well as Léonard and Gargouille. Heartbroken, shocked, and angry, Franck is the one who ends up shouldering the blame for their presumed deaths as the others mourn. Things only get worse when Franck finds himself separated from the family, and in the territory of another tribe, this one hostile and cannibalistic...
Tumblr media
Haikyuu v5
I continue to read this series because it continues to be charming… though it is beginning to feel, maybe, just a little repetitive. Kind of an inevitability with sports manga. But so far it continues to be good enough to overcome that. I’m not sure what I can say about this series that I haven’t already, so I’ll simply say it continues to be one of the most impressive sports manga I’ve read, and the author does a fantastic job of creating engaging characters, fleshed out teams, and really compelling relationships. I do genuinely adore all the main members of Crows, along with a number of characters from the rival teams as well. And of course it has some kickass volleyball scenes that are just drawn so dramatically they can’t help but take your breath away a little.
Tumblr media
M*A*S*H Goes To Maine
Meh. The original book of the series was actually quite good in my opinion. This one… considerably less so. The first part I enjoyed more, since it was about Hawkeye, Trapper, Duke, and Oliver Jones trying to set up the FinestKind Clinic and Fishmarket in Crabapple Cove (which… is just the best premise I could have ever asked for). However, the book spends most of its time describing the quirky lives and times of other people living in the area and I… just… don’t care. It was funny at times but… I just don’t care. I wanted to hear more about the main cast. Also I found this book felt more racist and misogynistic than the first which also put me off :/ Wouldn’t bother if I were you. Go read the first book instead, or better yet just watch the TV show which is an obvious banger.
Tumblr media
My Heart’s in the Highlands
I have had this on my “currently reading” list for so long but I’m officially giving up. It’s a really good book in theory but my god I can’t get over the pacing.
It’s about Lady Jane, a woman studying medicine in Edinburgh in 1888, and who suddenly finds herself back in the Highlands in the 13th century. Lost and confused, Jane is now at the mercy Clan Donald’s hospitality while she tries to adjust to this new world and hunts for her broken time machine. Fortunately, this hospitality include a burgeoning friendship with a red-haired warrior woman, Ainslie nic Dòmhnaill, who opens Jane’s eyes to the way the world could be.
Listen. It drives me nuts. This book should be completely up my alley, it has everything I like — IT HAS ALL OF ITS HISTORICAL FOOTNOTES CITED AT THE BACK, LITTLE EXTRA DETAILS ABOUT EVERY CHAPTER. THAT’S MY SHIT RIGHT THERE. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LIKE BEING ABLE TO GO OVER HISTORICAL DETAILS?? AND WELL RESEARCHED FOOTNOTES?? And yet it doesn’t. Fucking. Work for me. It has a kickass Scottish warrior lady as a love interest! It has a badass lady doctor! It has fish-out-of-water culture shock! But it also has a completely meandering plot, no sense of building tension, and a romance that just happens out of nowhere and feels completely unearned and uninteresting.
I would genuinely just rather read Outlander again, which I know has its own host of problems, but at least Outlander felt exciting and interesting and tense and funny. The romance built in fits and starts, it was complicated, and kept me interested. That book had me hooked (and has me hooked every time I reread it) whereas this book I’ve been sadly picking at for months like its a plate of overcooked spinach. This felt like an attempt at a queer, historically accurate knockoff which I would normally be super into but which just could not stick the landing.
Tumblr media
Moomin on the Riviera
My first time actually reading anything from the Moomin canon. I have zero idea how to feel about it! It certainly is as feral as I’ve heard described! Overall, I think I enjoyed it but it sure made me feel strange emotions I didn’t know existed. I’m not even going to try to describe it. Read it if you want a batshit insane anti-capitalist comic.
Tumblr media
Surviving the City
This was good in some areas, less good in others. It had a very interesting indigenous perspective on life in the modern city, the foster system, and The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women issue, which I’ve never seen handled in a book before. Something about the pacing did not completely click with me and I found myself getting easily distracted, but it’s definitely worth the read just to experience it and look at the issues it deals with through the characters’ (and author’s) eyes. It did give me a lot to think about and wrestle with, which is sometimes the best thing a book can give you.
Tumblr media
Torchwood: Pack Animals
A really fun read, more so than I had ever expected! If you like Torchwood and want more stories about the team before everything goes to shit, this is perfect for that. It includes the entire cast, an interest mystery to be unravelled, lots of slavering monsters, Rhys being really wonderful and sweet (which I didn’t know I wanted until I read this book), and all the humour I expect from Torchwood. I had to send a lot of quotes to my long-suffering girlfriend who a) does not watch this show but b) needs to tolerate it because I find it too funny to keep to myself. It was good enough to make me go out another book of the series since this was the only one my library carried.

Kobayashi’s Maid Dragon S2 Episode 11 Notes
Tumblr media
This is ラジオ体操 radio taisou, lit. radio exercise(s). Basically it’s a short series of light stretches intended for general health. It used to be broadcast over the radio (and I guess still is), but is also on TV and internet these days too.
It’s generally popular as a morning thing to kind of get the blood flowing—some companies (apparently around 1/3rd) even have a few minutes in the morning set aside to have everyone do it. Some neighborhoods will hold outdoor public gatherings during summer break, as a morning routine thing for children while school is out. It’s also a kinda stereotypical old-person thing to do.
There are two “sets,” known as radio taisou dai ichi, and radio taisou dai ni (basically “the first” and “the second”), and each has a standing version and sit-down version for improved accessibility.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Pound (shoulders)” here is 肩たたき kata-tataki, a type of shoulder massage that involves lightly bopping the recipient’s shoulders with the bottom of your fists. It’s a stereotypical thing for kids to do for parents/grandparents (remember the shoulder massage tickets Kanna gave Kobayashi for Father’s Day in ep 8? same thing).
Tumblr media
I honestly have no idea how effective it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
小林さんは安く済ませようとして、色々物を買ってしまうタイプなんでしょうか?
For clarity here, the idea is less that Kobayashi tries to buy lots of stuff for cheap, but that she wants to solve whatever problem on the cheap, and ends up wasting a bunch of money on several cheapo purchases that don’t really help.
Another angle on it might be like:
“Could she be the type who tries fixing a problem cheaply, but ends up paying more for less?”
Tumblr media
Just a bit of trivia, but in the manga Elma answers this question about computer chairs by saying “Yes, a good one costs as much as 1,000 cream buns.”
That’s our Elma.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Takiya’s word for “logic” here is 理屈 rikutsu. Rikutsu does mean “logic,” but it has another use too: referring to something that relies excessively on “theory” vs. practical application/real experience, or a kind of “forced” logic.
Basically here he’s saying this out of modesty, not like “the solution was only logical.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This “concerning” is 危うい ayaui, an adjective describing something that’s in a perilous situation, kind of like something you’d say “balanced on a razor’s edge” of. It’s typically for less immediately physical types of danger (which would use 危ない abunai instead).
In this case, while it’s true such situations are typically “concerning,” he’s not saying this because he’s concerned per se; he’s saying that situations like Tohru’s, where emotions run high (e.g. romantic relationships), are often fragile because of that strength of emotion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For “a little hard,” Tohru says グサッと gusa-tto. (“Sharp” was 鋭い surudoi, which is basically one-for-one.)
Gusa-tto is one of those sound effect words mentioned in previous notes, used to describe a heavy stab or pierce (literally or figuratively). (If you’ve seen that anime/manga visual gag where someone says something and the words/speech bubble “stab” the other person, that’s a more light-hearted use of this.)
I mostly bring it up here because the “he’s sharp”→”what he said cut deep” was a good pairing of evocative phrasing that we didn’t really get in the English.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
この程度でいいですか? kono teido de ii desu ka? この程度でいいよ。 kono teido de ii yo.
Kobayashi’s answer here is repetition of the question, but changing the “question” marker for a declarative one. Like “Is this enough?” “This is enough.”
I bring it up here for two reasons. One is just because I mentioned the whole repetition thing in a previous episode’s notes, so as an example to help drive that home.
The other is that I have a bit of an issue with the choice of the word “perfect.” Kobayashi is generally a lowkey person (with some exceptions), prone more to understatement than overstatement, so a relatively strong word like perfect is a little out of character for this scene, I would say—especially given the Japanese.
The use of the particle で de in these two lines is also worth noting. In this context (where you’re talking about whether something is what you want), de ii and ga ii have two distinct meanings. With de, it’s “good enough.” With ga, it’s not just enough, it’s actively what you want. If you’ve seen romance shows where one person has low self-esteem, you’ve likely heard a question like “boku de ii?” answered with ”kimi ga ii.”
If there’d been some sort of twist to the phrasing like that, “perfect” might have been a good choice, but as it is I’d have probably stuck with something like “Yeah, this is plenty.” (if maintaining that sentence structure anyway)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
そういうもんですか? そういうもんだよ。 分かりました。そうします。
Just one quick note for clarity on this exchange; the “that/this” they’re talking about is the “what Kobayashi wants” topic, not specifically this tail-chair thing or how fast the tail-vibrations are etc. You likely got that anyway, but I figured I’d mention just in case, since the Japanese wording felt more obvious about it.
Tumblr media
Notably here Daddy Tohru says 知り合い shiriai, which is very explicitly a level or two removed from “friend.” (it’s often translated as “acquaintance”)
They might actually be friends and he just phrases it that way because tsundere, but either way I don’t know if I’d use “friends” here.
Tumblr media
If you’ll recall from the Elma episode, “clairvoyance” there was 千里眼 senrigan. This is actually not that, but instead 未来視 mirai-shi, which is more or less literally “future sight.” It probably won’t really come up again(?), but just as a world-building thing I guess, know that this guy and Elma don’t actually have exactly the same power (at least in this instance).
Tumblr media
The word for “lost control” here is 暴走した bousou shita, which does basically mean that.
I would, however, like to point out that he’s not necessarily saying Tohru lost control of herself. Bousou means that [whatever] is running wild, but that ranges from a runaway train, to someone going berserk, to someone acting rashly without consulting others.
My point in bringing it up is that “lost control” sounds like Tohru had little/no agency in the decision to storm the enemy’s home ground, which is not really the case and not necessarily implied in the Japanese.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Kobayashi responds here, she says she, Kobayashi, will be the one getting looked after by Tohru, not the other way around. She flips it 180 degrees from how Dad here says it.
(Since, y’know, Tohru’s the maid and everything.)
Example alt text:
“Make sure you take good care of Tohru until your lifespan runs out.”
“Yessir, I’ll have her take good care of me.”
It’s supposed to give this very heavy and serious scene a bit of levity to end on.
(For the Japanese students: she says [面倒を]見てもらいます, meaning that Kobayashi is having Tohru do the “looking [after].” If she was the one doing the looking after, it would be something like 見させてもらいます instead.
When you stick もらう or いただく after a verb, it’s you having someone else do that verb, not you doing it, so to make it work for “you” being the verb-doer, you have to flip the verb to a passive form. It’s kind of like the difference between “please [verb]” and “please allow me to [verb]”.)
Tumblr media
どうしてトールがうちに来てくれる気になったのか
Two small things about this line. First: the “came here” is うちにきてくれる uchi ni kite kureru. The two words I want to mention are uchi, which is like “my/our place” (like “wanna come to my place?”), and kureru, which is used as a helping verb to denote that a verb was done for someone else.
So basically the Japanese adds two extra layers of… emotion(?) to the “came here.” That is, “here” is specified as Kobayashi’s home (vs “here” being more vague and could just mean “this world”), and the “came” is conjugated in a way that expresses Kobayashi sees Tohru’s .
The second, more minor, is that it seems like the English took the 気になった ki ni natta and changed it from talking about Tohru to talking about Kobayashi.
Ki ni naru can mean to take an interest in something (“I’m curious”), or when attached to a verb, can mean “got the will/motivation to do [verb].” In this sentence, it’s attached to the verb phrase uchi ni kite kureru, so meaning more like “why you chose to come here.”
(That said you could easily leave the “curious to hear” part there in the English too though, since that still makes sense for her asking a question like this.)
(Basically the English reads like a translation of どうしてトールがここに来たのか気になった instead of the line in question.)
So like as an example alt:
“I’m curious what moved you to come live with me.”
Which still doesn’t fully grasp that kureru, since that’s a hard thing to just “slip in” in English, but does hit a few other relevant notes and should still be okay length-wise (cursed subtitle restrictions!).
Tumblr media
The phrase for “[move] to the big city” here is 上京 joukyou. It combines the characters for “up” and “capital” (of a state/country) and is used as a verb for moving to the capital—these days, specifically Tokyo.
(It used to mean moving to Kyoto, and I’m told it annoys some old-school Kyoto-ites if you use it to say moving from Kyoto to Tokyo, lol.)

Custom Toonami Block Week 74 Rundown
Code Geass: So we’ve got another one of those “wacky bullshit student activities” episodes, though this one seems to ride the hardest on “shit is going down, the world is ending but haha Shirley romance drama” though admittedly it does have a nice character arc for Milly so that’s cool. Lelouch is worried that the Knights of the Round are here to investigate him until he realizes both of them only have one braincell between them so it’s fine. Cornelia’s also murdering her way through religious fanatics so that’s cool. And last but not least we have Shirley and Lelouch finally getting together right before Jeremiah Geass Cancels her amnesia so she knows Lelouch is Zero and killed her dad and presumably the other stuff that Charles put in the whole school’s brain somehow. I’m sure this will end well and their romance will survive in a way that isn’t insanely tragic.
Inuyasha: We’re still in fillertown and it’s another SangoxMiroku episode. Man we get a lot of these in filler huh? I kinda don’t remember which Sango/Miroku moments are canon at this point. I’d kinda laugh if it was just all filler and some manga-only fans were bewildered when they ended up together in the end. Anyway, Feudal Lord has a thing for Sango because he has great taste and Kagome ships Sango/Miroku so she doesn’t want her to go, Miroku’s like “Hey it’s her choice, she’s been through enough, she can choose her own life, I’m not gonna get involved” which is pretty mature but the girls still hate on him for it. Sango’s just like “Dude even if I wanted to stay I still have this Naraku-slaying quest to go on and I’m not about to sit around all day and be royalty while my friends go kick Naraku’s ass for me.” Which is how most love confessions in this series go. Also Sango suplexes a demon bear the size of a building with her bare hands and it’s pretty great. In the end the lord doesn’t give up going after Sango but they finish the bear stuff and are on their way. I like how they don’t go out of their way to demonize this guy in the end to prop Miroku up, he’s still a good guy, Sango’s just got shit to do and is more the type to like a warrior who’s got her back. There’s some really cute shipping shenanigans here and all in all it’s fun filler.
Yu Yu Hakusho: We’ve got a three for one deal here as Yusuke and Kuwabara assblast their way through the Dark Triad in one episode, continuing their power play of beating villains with little effort while the boss man bets that they’ll completely wreck his guards which is still a pretty interesting dynamic. We’ve got cringey 90s trans commentary, an invisible dude that gets blindsided easily and a hostage ogre that gets beaten by Botan taking off her coat. Honestly for these guys being supposedly minibosses they kind of went down easier than some of the grunts. But now Kuwabara’s in contact with Yukina because his bullshit power of love connection actually works for some reason and they’re in on the final fight with the Toguro brothers. With this many people betting the GDP of countries on the fight there’s no way this isn’t rigged. I really like how YYH basically makes shonen fights just part of stupid black market deals for a large part of it, just like in real life everything’s decided by some old rich guy.
Fate Zero: Kayneth’s still fucked up and has Rock Lee syndrome and can’t use jutsu anymore so his wife’s like “Yo buddy you can’t give Lancer the magic cummies anymore anyway, lemme take control of your hunky knight manslave or I swear to god I’ll rip your arm off and jerk him off with it” which since she asked so nicely he just kind of does. With Lancer still kinda being uppity about Kayneth having dibs on his soul and Sola-Ui being weirdly horny and increasingly yandere for him I’m sure this’ll end well. Saber and Kiritsugu are still pissy with each other because Saber wants to go after Caster to stop the child murders which is fair but she’s also injured and shit and she’s mad at Kiritsugu for not teaming up with Kayneth to just take down Caster right there and I mean I don’t think he really had time to suggest a truce while getting attacked with Terminator 2 goo, he’s not really the asshole here. Meanwhile and more importantly, ISKANDAR HAS PANTS! Nothing can stop him now and they crash Caster’s child murder party and are jumped by Assassin’s Forty Thieves (they aren’t named yet but I’mma just assume) and Iskander’s just like “Yeah no I’m not fighting five ninjas knee deep in child guts.” And they just burn the whole place down.
Konosuba: So in a bizarre Interspecies Reviewers/Food Wars crossover, Kazuma goes to a succubus house and instead of just getting sex they do dreams and shit which seems more complicated but I guess it’s less morally gray. Anyway, naked Darkness and contrived hentai plots ensue. They sprinkle in some good character stuff for Kazuma which is nice, it’s always kind of hard to pin down where his principles lie. Like he’s generally a scumbag and will take the easy way out of anything but he’s not evil and will give Darkness an out on their encounter if she wants and will get his ass kicked to protect his local sex worker. The Principled Scumbag approach is kind of neat for him, I wish a few more of these moments didn’t feel the need to immediately undercut themselves with a joke but that’s the nature of the series. I feel like one or two more genuinely sincere moments throughout a couple episodes would do wonders but either way it’s still amusing.
Sailor Moon Crystal: We pick up right where we left off with Tuxedo Mask throwing himself in front of the Kamehameha for Usagi and then she goes Super Saiyan and cries pokemon tears to bring him back to life. But the bad guys are somehow like ‘yoink’ and steal him from her lap through a barrier somehow (that still kinda pisses me off) and for some reason the crystal that booped its way into his chest isn’t there anymore and Usagi still has and and Usagi’s going through a lot of shit right now between processing the trauma of a millennia-old kingdom falling that’s partially her fault, working through her romantic feelings and having a Steven Universe identity crisis about how to process her identity as a reincarnation of someone a lot cooler than she is, so most of this episode is Usagi crying, as most episodes are, but at least she has a good reason.  Then we get a Girl Squad Roll Out montage because fuck it we’re going to the moon somehow.
Durarara!!:  Apparently everyone knows about where Celty’s head is but her because she visits Izaya’s office where the head is just kinda behind some books on his bookshelf and she doesn’t know but Shinra’s dad has enough time to mug Namie after telling Shinra and Celty off for their weird interspecies relationship and tell Izaya to have fun fucking around with the head. Also people have shifted from being worried about the Dollars to being worried about Saika and ALSO being worried about the Dollars maybe being at war with the Yellow Scarves. Celty’s looking into it and Shinra shows some character development in just coming out with it that Saika was the sword that severed her connection with her head… I don’t know how you cut the soul of a head that’s already cut off but okay, at least Shinra’s not hiding shit from here anymore. Also Saika’s about to seriously chop up Anri and Masaomi comes to visit his girl in the hospital finally.

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THE SEASON TWO IN YOUR HEAD
OKAY CURRENT PROGRESS ON SOUL EATER SEASON TWO THAT LIVES IN MY HEAD.
hm okay so first of all it takes place a few years after the og series, I'm thinking like six to seven? point is the gang is all split up, maka was offered a teacher position at dwma but turned it down to travel a bit and consider if she's comfortable with working for dwma considering all the secrecy they're doing. soul is with her because that's what he does and crona is with her because Do Not Separate Them. blackstar and tsubaki are also out seeing the world but less to philosophize and more to get stronger because they're tsubaki and blackstar, possibly incorporating tsubaki's cool new forms from the manga. kid is still in death city and basically I think it'd be interesting if he's slowly preparing to take over as death god with full knowledge of what that would entail for lord death, since that would kinda put a new spin on it compared to the manga. also on the side he's also doing his own scheming because I think that would be fun.
anyway, plot stuff is that dwma have been using angela and mifune to get in contact with the witches and there's talk of a truce, once again incorporating stuff from the manga. the plan is to send kid to do some preliminary negotiations with a team to look out for him, and he asks to take maka and blackstar rather than like, stein or someone, partly because friendship and partly because they're more likely to go along if he starts scheming. this is how we reunite the gang, minus crona who would be wildly unsafe going into with territory considering their connection to medusa and because there's a chance the witches might want to study up on the black blood, in which case crona is the best test subject.
before they leave for the negotiations some way or another it comes out that kim is a witch, which the gang promises to keep secret also I think it'd be cute and sweet if the whole b-team knows and are looking out for kim. anyhoo through kim they find out a bit more abt what the current political situation in the witch world is, which angela and mifune had not been let in on since he's a human and she's like ten. basically, as eruka said in the og series mabaa is getting old so they're also prepping for a change in power, and the title of supreme witch or whatever is slated to go to one of three chosen young witches who have been trained from birth. the gang decide to keep this to themselves for now, partly to keep kim safe and partly because of kid's scheming.
(it should also be noted that there needs to be so many heartwarming reunions also also blackstar is still the shortest he's the token manlet of the group)
anyway they get going and eventually meet up with a witch who uses magic to transport them to where mabaa is hanging out, maybe the witches have a cool witch city that's like. a pit or something whatever it is it needs to be dramatic. negotiations start and kid reveals that he's not only interested in a truce, he wants an active partnership, hence the scheming. mabaa at least isn't outright opposed to the idea but notes that the dwma have been hunting witches for ages so the larger community is bound to be at the very least hesitant. the whole witch election is brought up and mabaa agrees to set up meetings with the three witches with the understanding that if the gang so much as lay a hand on them or in any way try to meddle in the process she will personally see to it that the dwma/witch conflicts escalates to an all out war.
after this I'm kinda fuzzy on the plot, but the first one they see is maggot witch, who's not interested in a partnership. she gives the group brain worms which they manage to get through by the power of friendship or something, and which blackstar has a problem with bc he has a hard time asking from help because that's a sign or weakness or whatever, once again I'm unsure on this. around this time is also where crona shows up because they only managed to keep still for like a day before they started worrying abt maka since they have a lot more experience with witches than she has. they've gotten a lot better over the years, they're still very sheltered but their partnership with ragnarok is much more stable and they can make a joke or two I think. I feel like they deserve it.
next they probably take a quick break at some kind of safe house to recover and build character dynamics, after which they go see bee witch. bee witch is a lot more fun to be around, she throws big parties and has a laff, and she says she'd be interested in working with dwma, because she has a personal loss in the conflict. here we find out that a witch she was really close to (maybe her mom idk) was the witch maka's mom killed to make a death scythe, which maka is smart enough to shut up about but which makes the potential alliance a bit shaky since it's one thing to talk abt it in abstract and a whole other thing to have a shot at revenge within arm's reach. they leave not feeling entirely sure and with crona deeply uncomfortable since they had to endure a party scene press f.
last with they see I haven't drawn or developed a whole bunch yet, but she's a dragonfly witch and doesn't really care either way abt working with dwma since she's not interested in the leadership position in the first place. she has a lot of feelings abt being raised for this One Purpose and not getting to be a person, especially with the risk that she's not even going to get to serve that purpose, which hits home with crona. after this I have. no idea what happens but probably something goes wrong, maybe because of kid's scheming since lord death is bound to find out at some point.
additional notes: I think soul and crona should get to bond over being the most introverted, like just seeing them look genuinely comfortable sitting away from the group and not saying a word to each other. maka's mom's achievements kinda coming back to bite maka in the ass I feel like would give some nuance to the way maka idolizes her mother and constantly tries to follow in her footsteps. I think maybe since this is soul eater season two that lives in MY head I should get to sprinkle in some romance who's to say. I could back it up with how it would add to the themes if I wanted to but it's embarassing and this post is already filling up my embarassment quota for the night, so ask me like. tomorrow if you want to know. I cherish you so much for asking me abt this though make no mistake. I dip you like a dancer
