I originally made this video back in October, but unfortunately it's still FAR too relevant.

For anybody who's interested, my website has a whole collection of Palestinian flag themed pieces including suncatchers like this one, keychains, earrings, and necklace pendants that I've been using as a fundraiser for Palestine.

$10-$25 of every piece I sell from this collection (the exact amount is in the description of each item) will be donated to UNWRA, the PCRF, or used to purchase eSIMs for displaced Palestinians

**Quick note: before anybody else tries to accuse me of only doing this for the money, please know that I desperately wish I could afford to donate 100% of the profits. Unfortunately the vast majority of my art sales have dried up since I became vocal about my support for Palestine, and despite what Kellogg's wants us all to think, I still need to eat.

The more of (especially TNG-era) star trek I watch the more ridiculous the notion of it only recently becoming "political" becomes.

DS9 gave us a bunch of exploited workers cheering "Union! Union! Union!" and one Ferengi quoting the communist manifesto at another.

That's gotta be political by even the most conservative, "apolitical" standards.

Art is political (including fanfiction)

Tonight, I posted a KinnPorsche fic with a very brief note about my mental health and personal things, including how the horrific news from the Palestine genocide is affecting me.

I got a well-meaning comment warning me that I should lock my comment section down, because I may be getting unpleasant comments associated with that.

Wanted to address why I included the note in the first place and why I won't be locking my comments down. (Not that anyone is going to see this, barely anyone reads my Tumblr; but still.)

Firstly - art should never be neutral. And yes, I include my fanfiction stories as art because they are a form of art for me, both "regular" art and art therapy.

We are living (aren't we always) in unprecedented historical times.

While I'm unable, mentally, to craft a story that delves deeper into why people should care about a genocide, the LEAST I can do is include a note that it is something we should be aware of.

This is not just another trending news story. I know we are constantly bombarded with small news items, clickbait, but I promise you - what is going on in Palestine should not be happening, but it is, and it is a big fucking deal.

Secondly, and maybe there is a small glimmer of optimism that lives in me still, that my readers are kind and they are not apathetic to things that go on in the world.

My stories frequently touch on real world issues that affect disabled people, the queer community.

I hope the kindness they show me, some faceless, nameless author, applies to other people. I have to believe this. That if they care about these fictional characters, they will care about real life people.

And if I do indeed get unpleasant comments - so be it. I don't think people who are apathetic to the plight of Palestinians, are people that I want reading my stories.

You don't get to laugh *only* during the good times and ignore that there is shit that affects our real lives. People that I care for. People that do not deserve to have whole families wiped from the registry.

Lastly... you may say that this KinnPorsche fandom in particular is apolitical, so why am I inserting this into an author's note.

I am literally writing about gay mafia dudes doing depraved shit.

Specifically, please focus on the fact that they are gay.

Gay people who do not have rights in Thailand and other parts of the world. The sole fact that they are gay makes it very very political.

So no. I will not stop writing about things that I care about. Don't like, don't read.

In unprecedented times, doing the "right" thing isn't always the popular thing. I know we are taught in a way that makes it seem like it is easy. It is not. It takes courage to take a stand, to say that one side is wrong but to me it is very very clear that genocide is occurring in front of our eyes and that we are beholden to bear witness and to do anything we can to stop it.

My great grandparents did not die in the fight against Japanese colonization for nothing. While I am not on the frontlines of this particular fight, I believe their sacrifice taught me that I should be brave when I am confronted with a similar issue.

Starving Anonymous by Inabe Kazu, Kuraishi Yuu and Mizutani Kengo is probably the most horrifying shit I've ever read and one of the most precise stories about capitalism ever. To the point where it's not even a metaphor anymore. Alien monsters are causing global warming and are extorting political leaders with a potential solution. They are having the government providing them with untold amounts of humans for consumption. The staff forced to facilitate the mass murder are so desperate that they are content with not being killed that very moment, not that they are save from the random retribution of the aliens. Meanwhile the director of the mass murder facility champions a false idea of fairness and noble self sacrifice.

I'm on ep4 of Andor, and what I'm really loving is this detailed look inside the Imperial ranks and how, as with Piett and Needa in the OT, we get the chance to see that the Empire is just as unhealthy for the people that support it as it is for the people who resist it.

No one is dehumanized or made into a "villain". These are all just human beings (and others) bumbling along as best as they can, caught up in a system that they have created themselves, but to which they have subsequently fallen victim.

Which is very in keeping with our own Zeitgeist, of course.
