"Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry (2012)" Reflection
This film was following the turbulent but passionate story of one Chinese artist named Ai Weiwei, who did not only make pretty pieces for people to look at, but, made works that would force the viewer to see the big issues that had affected the lives of regular people/artists of China. He believed that art "is a vehicle for us to develop new ideas, to be creative, to extend the imagination..." and also that art was a means to protect the freedom of expression and his main purpose for daring to go against Chinese idealisms and laws that heavily restricted expressing someone's gripes with their government. He used a variety of media for every piece and every issue he wanted to be brought to light, such as publicizing the names of all of the students that were lost to a devastating earthquake to dropping an authentic Han dynasty vase onto the ground (which is the image I chose to put up. His favorite media of all was the internet and using his camera to document everyone and everything that happened to him during his daily life or when he faced aggressive Chinese authorities. Ai Weiwei truly does represent what it means for an artist to fight for not only for their works to be seen, but, to also fight for the public when the government either keeps them in the dark, or, tries to keep them silent.
