- So, you are a member of the Intelligentsia guild, studying under Dr. Ratio’s class. im free from yakuza kiwami 2. fuck the writing in this one. this was a complete mess of pulling from the most popular generic east asian drama tropes at the time of 2006 and having it be handled by a super inexperienced writer at the helm.

i went from having no expectations, got somewhat surprised, only to end up downing alcohol and laughing hysterically before the credits rolled. so that should set the mood for how i feel about this one. thought vomit under the cut, a lot of info dump about culture incoming

yakuza kiwami 2 is pure heterosexual east asian romance bullshit.

im gonna just. describe as best as i can what i know and remember from the general media coming out from the 90s to the 2010s in around this part of the world before i just start explaining why i think this story is a mess.

so. 2 parts i swear is responsible for this rubbish.

1) East Asian Beauty Standard

the general consensus for a beautiful feminine woman AT THE TIME in this sphere is the following

be willowy thin (fat = lazy and ugly)

have black hair that ISNT short (dyed = too much individuality, too much WESTERN INDIVIDUALISM, gasp how dare!)

fair skinned (bc dark = she works in the fields and is from a lower class)

young. if you heard of the term "Christmas Cake" in japan context, yeah. (ie women over age of 25 are undesirable)

be educated and refined, bc that indicates class and femininity (failing this means shes vulgar and gasp like a barbarian)

be submissive to her male peers in the sense that her authority cannot override his at least in public (for the sake of his face)

dresses feminine and not like a man (trousers and jeans are man-ish. traditional clothing, skirts and dresses are preferred. the further back the stronger this sentiment is.)

incidentally, theres a lot of classism tied to this EABS due to sinocentric culture influences. it has to do with the chinese court system and how korea and japan copied it and a lot of the culture wholesale but. anyway. thats like over 1000 years of history in there thats not really worth detouring to rn.

and also, the worth of a man is sometimes (not always) upheld by how classy and feminine this wife of his is. as of 2024 though, this line of thought is still around in the more conservative pockets. also, the education might not matter as much these days as how deep her and her parents' pockets and wealth are.

moving on.

2) media tropes

so. off the top of my head.

if you wanted a popular romance drama in this time period, the popular offerings no matter where you looked tended to offer the same flavors of tropes.

the woman always has dark hair, is fair skinned, thin and younger than her male love interest. ive never seen this broken or subverted in my time absorbing via osmosis the dramas playing on local tv growing up in the early 2000s.

everything else about her can be subverted though. sometimes she can wear fancy pants or have short hair to indicate her strong individualism. BUT, her personality no matter how strong it begins, no matter how her intro begins will 99% of the time encounter an effect where catching feelings turns her into a meek loyal woman to her love interest.

bc she cant override his authority in this culture context.

at worst, she becomes highly irrational and even hysterical in the dramas when bad things happen. this includes things like love triangle, or a fallout of family business, drama, plot or whatever. she would cry and sometimes even die.

see: sawamura yumi. sayama kaoru.

meanwhile, the male love interest can be anything. ive seen middle aged guys to young good looking upcoming actors playing the lead, with looks varying from haggardly okay to young and handsome. it. really depends on the genre.

depending on what specific country it came from, the drama would have the male either grow, become manlier (by learning honor ig), become stupid in the name of love, but he rarely if ever actually dies. the woman effectively becomes yoshi for mario to lauch off on when they're crossing a chasm

the romance is forced. a lot of the BIG LOVE SPARK ie kissing happens in tense moments bc it builds drama, but in reality comes too fucking close to sexual assault (some of the old jackie chan movies does this iirc for slapstick even)

see: sayama getting kissed right after handling her biological father's ashes less than 24 hours ago and admitting to kiryu that shes scared. this scene right fucking here.

bc in general, the scriptwriters for popular dramas tended to be guys themselves and tended to write more human dudes. and the women in the stories are reflective of the ideal societal expectation at the time: being a Refined Housewife.

so her character development is often headed in the direction of marriage and being a stay at home mom.

if it sounds a little like tradwife bullshit, it is.

Refined Housewife

(i have massive negative thoughts about this which i KNOW for a fact is a thing bc a lot of these societal culture femininity was impressed on me as a kid in a world where it was already getting increasingly impossible to have 1 spouse be a SAHP. and also i hated the whole thing about giving face to the patriarch of the house when i personally saw so much ego dick measuring from my uncles. anyway understand that this is both a bias an a lived experience, so proceed with that in mind)

there is a problem with the Refined Housewife expectation: education.

in general, education has been a good metric to judge how classy or smart one is in asia's largely on-the-surface meritocracy based culture. people will look at each other's school first and then judge them from there, and pretty hard too.

so everyone regardless of gender will be expected to study super hard. and bc having good test scores and going to good schools looks good for the family's face, parents will often pile on tuition to the child to get them a leg up in life.

bc also no good degree from good school means no future.

but then... the woman is expected to be a housewife. 🙃 meaning... the education, her accomplishments, are kinda... tossed away in this context. put a pin in this.

it wont matter how much she studied or accomplished, bc the expectation is that the woman would marry and obey her husband, and give him face/honor that way. the kids will come eventually bc having kids = being filial to ones parents in this context.

also uh. no, having adopted kids is not thought of as being filial. continuing the bloodline is.

and if you've been paying attention, then yes, ive been skirting around the backbone of sayama kaoru's writing foundations this entire time.

Her story has been butchered so clumsily i cant even...

lets just. ugh.

she fits the EABS standard, her tropes are trying to subvert the expectations of a womanly woman in this context, she has IMPRESSIVE education and career achievements. she works in a male dominated field, and is keenly aware of sexism. she is strong, stronger than her male peers, at least we are told.

by 2006s standards, its still considered a fresh take with those alone in japan. sexism there is its own flavor of crap. (if you noticed ive not spoken about LGBTQ+ stuff at all, its bc how ridiculously BINARY the expectation is at that point in time. it still is today but less so)

however, the writing has this sense of trying to copy the popular tropes at the time while not fully understanding and dissecting them, and ends up butchering sayama's character before the romance even properly began.

i mean, for fucks sake even, sayama and kiryu has a whopping 14 year age gap. when im told these are supposed to be believable people living in japan, this is too big for me to just go 'oh ok!'. and remember the Christmas Cake thing? shes 25. (FUCKING--!!!! !!)

the problem here that i see is the writer trying to apply all of those while trying to play the tropes straight. trying to imitate. trying to make a statement but then finding out theres nothing within yourself to stand by what you want to say and backtracking.

we are told:

sayama is strong yet she goes down with 1 slap by random thugs and needing kiryu to come in and body them. because romance ig.

we are told shes a yakuza hunter but she doesnt scare a single one beyond her introductory scene.

she goes from defiant and bossing kiryu around to getting her actions overridden by kiryu and ryuji, both men, towards the end

her subtext is that shes not feminine and therefore conventionally undesirable, but then kiryu tells her shes actually feminine and therefore desired, as if its all that matters.

she becomes so stricken by grief and freaked out that she runs off solo to deal with ryuji in the most out of left pocket planning ive ever fucking seen.

and then yells as she takes out her police baton to take down the big yakuza dude, drawing attention and turning herself into a hostage.

i know the writing will fumble but i didnt expect it to fumble this bad.

for all the good the surface chemistry kiryu and sayama has, its being undermined by a fundamental failure to understand tropes and then using said tropes as a crutch so much that everything here has become a bloody mess.

this failure of over-relying on tropes without understanding them extends to yumi too. sawamura yumi was young and beautiful, and became the Refined Housewife to the Not-Male-MC and ends up regretting it, and gets killed for it.

her defining trait is that she is beautiful in subtext. thats. thats what the tattoo is. in a world where the tattoo makeths the person, thats what she is and all that she is.

dear lord.

ive read up a bit more on sayama and you know what. good that she chooses her career over kiryu. the romance would have caused both of their characters to explode with the trajectory this was heading in. ffs sayama could have had her own game. she has so MUCH potential.

and also GOOD that the writer is forced to think of kiryu in the position of the Stay At Home Parent for haruka and the orphanage down the line!!! subverting the fucking traditional BS expectation! yes!!!!!

all i got was sayama and kiryu making out before the bomb went off in front of my alcohol and salad while they're like 'eh, haruka will forgive us for dying :')'

and i ran out of alcohol.

therefore peter actually isn't actually exceptionally good at sneaking around at all. he is straight up bad at lying and keeping secrets. he had to learn it on the fly. he was not built for this. he's hardwired for honesty, because aunt may and uncle ben raised him that way.

victim of both the crew's misogyny n racism she cannot have something genuinely good happen to her a rule of the show's bible is that marinette must always be the one to learn a lesson pretty much every character in this show could be submitted including the writers' favorite boy adrien but im submitting marinette specifically as shes literally the protagonist of the show n they cannot be fucking normal towards a 14 year old asian teenage girl theres a lot of shots that show off her ass for ~totally~ no reason (there was even like a screenshot where it compared her normal ladybug model to one of her kwami fusion models n the kwami model dont remember which one literally had a bigger ass like what the fuck) surely theres nothing weird about how she has the most obvious body paint suit among the girls had a comic where she was depicted as not having any clothes after she changes back from being ladybug (something invented entirely for that comic alone n has never been a problem otherwise) leaving her to having to wear a fucking cardboard box n one of the crew literally drawing her naked n the show's creator defending them (ive never seen the actual art but the creator defending them does imply that someone on the crew did do that) n thats not even getting into the writing im not gonna touch on the racism myself cause i dont fully remember all the moments n might get some details wrong but from my experience it was relatively easy to find fans of color talking about it anyway the writers on this show seem to have a personal fucking vendetta against teenage girls n especially teenage girls in love i know chloe's been submitted a lot n shes is only one of many victims of it if girls like the same guy they will get into cat fights n be mean as hell to eachother (marinette chloe n lila) while if guys like the same girl theyre allowed to be friends n it not really factor into their relationship (luka n adrien) they write marinette as being weird obsessive n stalkery towards adrien simply because shes a teenage girl with a crush n lack awareness that some of the stuff would be entirely reasonable for her to know cause yknow adrien is literally a celebrity just cause they think peak comedy is bad stuff happening to marinette when she tries to move on from her crush on adrien (something they literally wrote her to do) cause its only ever resulted in her getting humiliated they yanked her back after giving her an actually good love interest who respects her boundaries just god theres a fucking lot going on here n i dont think i even covered the worst of it

her parents are literally based off of the creator n an ex girlfriend of his (his tweet stating that is still up btw) so to me that adds like a whole nother layer to the way shes treated in the show cause he called marinette his virtual daughter

I’m really glad that people in the TMNT fanbase have finally started calling out the insistence that 2012 Splinter is irredeemably abusive. As well as how the criticism comes across as racist. The way the character is depicted in the show versus the way he is often depicted in fan content is like night and day. I’m open to different fan interpretations, but I’ve seen an insane amount of fans confidently state that he’s canonically abusive. And this is one of the worst misinterpretations of canon I’ve ever seen in fanon.

2012 Splinter was raised in Japan, and seems to take on a more East Asian style of parenting. He’s stricter with his sons, but usually when they put themselves or their brothers in danger. However, I would say that he’s far more gentle and understanding than anything else. And I would like to clarify that reasonably disciplining your kids and teaching them right from wrong is not abusive. That’s what it means to be a parent. Never correcting misbehavior is another form of abuse, one that borders on neglect.

Another thing to consider is that he’s in a very unique situation. Splinter and the turtles are mutants. They will never be accepted by society and will always be seen as monsters; he knows this. He teaches his sons how to fight so they can defend themselves in a world that will try to hunt them down and kill them. He has nightmares about his sons dying. The show explores the terror he faces as a parent, which is something he’s already experienced with the loss of his daughter and wife.

Splinter is devastated and relieved to find that Miwa is alive. He loves her as his daughter, but that doesn’t mean he no longer sees the turtles as his sons. He views them as being his children just as much as his biological child. He clarifies this to Leonardo. The reason I love TMNT so much as a franchise is because it’s one of the few pieces of media that explores familial love within an adopted family. And TMNT 2012 constantly reiterates that family can look unconventional and does not need to be bound by blood.

Splinter is a realistic depiction of a parental figure. Most parents in media are either abusive or perfect with no in-between. Splinter is the type of parent who tries his best but still makes mistakes. In real life, there is no such thing as a perfect parent. Even the kindest parents are going to make mistakes from time to time. But my favorite thing about Splinter is that he almost always owns up to his mistakes. Rather than doubling down or pretending he did nothing wrong, he admits his wrongdoing and apologizes. And that’s way better than a lot of parents.

I don’t want to get too personal, but I grew up with several abusive adults in my life. I know firsthand what it’s like to experience very violent abuse at the hands of an adult. It fucked me up and I’m still recovering from it. Pretty much none of those adults ever admitted wrongdoing or grew as a person. In their eyes, they were always in the right and I deserved what I was getting. I would’ve loved to have a patient and kind adult in my life like 2012 Splinter.

Abuse looks different for everyone, and I don’t want to imply my experiences are universal. But as someone who did grow up in that environment, it’s upsetting to see people blow Splinter’s actions out of proportion in order to validate their dislike of a him. To me, it feels like fans are using the abuse as a tool to make their opinions look morally correct. As a writer, I understand making alternate universes to amp up the angst potential. But insisting that fanon is canon is where I draw the line, especially when it comes to willfully misinterpreting a character.

I like to think Katsuki would absolutely LOVE south Asian food. He’s always liked his spices so dishes from desh always have been a fave.

Normally he’s the one to cook at home, taking pride in his skills but if you decide to cook, he’s eyebrows up, eager to see what you make.

Even if your tastes are milder, he still drools over it. Something about the domesticity of it all, how he can imagine you over and over again, flittering away through his kitchen, like it’s your own- really, it will be soon.

This is a given, who doesn’t like samosas, but he will nom his way through as many as you hand him. However do not point out how the spikes of his hair look awfully familiar because he will nom YOU, a weird trait he developed that he insists is to tease but you know- the soft bites to your cheeks are just his unspoken affections.

Katsuki- he’ll deny it- has a slight sweet tooth. Mishti is a bit much for him at times, but he’ll never drop the chance to have Shemai. He’s actually such a sucker for the stuff. Even when he does the dad thing of “I shouldn’t. I shouldn’t.” You will never not catch him with a bowl of it by the end of the night.

He’s never been one to drink much tea, but tell me once you put him on, he’s been put on. Can no longer drink tea without spices swimming around in his pot. He’s picked up the habit of offering Masala Saa, the way you make it, when his parents come over. His mother laughs and ruffles his hair, his father sips with a knowing smile- you’re everywhere, even when you’re not.

Katsuki has always been a fast learner, so watching you, he’s already picked up a bunch of recipes. Much to your chagrin, he will out cook you- without even trying!! Gifted bastard…

To be specific he absolutely loves a Kacchi Biryani, it’s just such a … him dish lol. Especially when he ups the heat. Mind the awful joke kacchan biryani though, you might be his girlfriend love of his life but he will deadpan and stop talking to you until you’ve come off the giggles.

Ever so organised, Katsuki is one to have all his spices and herbs labelled and stored away neatly. When you ask if you can add your own labels, in your mother tongue, he thinks it should tick him off but it doesn’t. Instead, when you’re away, he thumbs the labels, a little messier than his printed handwriting, somehow smitten over the tiny pieces of you left behind.

He’ll even make the effort to try learn the names, knowing you have a cute habit of forgetting the English words- that has you trying to describe the spices through wild hand gestures and silly sounds. When you both do finally communicate and figure out the mystery spice, a little part of him doesn’t wish to give you the English, so he can watch you animatedly describe what an elaichi is, all over again.

He’s too far gone, he thinks, that anything you do has him smiling like dumbass. That stupid little interactions like these have his heart weird and warm. He’ll shake his head, maybe it’s the heartburn, but he god damn knows it isn’t. It’s you, and he fucking loves it.

Extra: Me thinks Kats’ is a fuckin grandma who straight up chews Naga Moriss like it’s nothin’- to your absolute disbelief. He’ll even pop a few in his mouth before work, just to get his sweat going… Katsuki!!! You’re the worst!!!

Any recommendations for Soft Romantic stories (books or movies) featuring Black Women?

I hope I don’t offend anyone and this is not meant to be a rant against all white women or anything. I also don’t expect every creator to create specifically for me, how can they if they don’t all get my experience? I’m just tired, y’all. 

I recently finished the Normal People limited series. I liked it at first but towards the middle I was really unimpressed and the end left me cold. No, I will not read the book. I think the thing that struck me most is how much I just don’t want to engage in any more romantic story lines that involve privileged white ingenues. I just can’t for the love of humanity watch a self absorbed girl rocking the nonchalant French girl aesthetic and strain to find her relatable. I live in Brooklyn. I know these girls. I just can’t relate. But they are not someone who’s inner life I need to get to know better. Maybe this is why I had no desire to ever watch Girls. I have a few white girl friends, they are not like these girls, like. at. all. I also recently watched The Boy Downstairs and The Worst Person in the World. See a theme here? Basically, I have Hulu and was struggling with finding modern romance to watch, thus this losing streak of irritating protagonists. I think Rory Gilmore is perhaps the archetype of this girl? I didn’t make it through the first season of that show. I just didn’t get the hype. 

Anyways, this got me thinking that I really, really, really would love to have some GOOD romantic entertainment that features someone that looks like me. But what I don’t want is a soap opera or a typical romance novel formula. ( I can get down with a good telenovela style epic drama, but I want a different flavor here). I think the appeal of genre of films I mentioned is that they try to go deeper, they try to be smarter, nuanced, layered. I get the draw. It’s just none of these characters are that interesting to me and people seem to fall at their feet for no discernible reason. But I want the fluff, the softness, the allusions to great literature and art, the camisoles worn ever so gracefully, travel, and promise. I just don’t want the sense that no matter what these girls are going to be ok and land on their feet. Maybe they have some trauma, but honestly I have trauma, too and I still have to be a Black woman that is still struggling to be valued in relationships, in the work place, in society at large. So no, one shitty parent and sibling is not the totality of my lived experience and the extent of my angst. There is a whole lot of other shit going on. I don’t have a trust fund to fall back on that can also finance all the self care, elite higher education, and travel I desire. I also still live with roommates. See what I’m saying? If you get it, you get it, if you don’t, you don’t. 

I’ve been writing a fanfic based on Carmy and Sydney from The Bear. It is so fluffy, but also deep, sensual, witty (at least I think so). Sydney is coming into her full womanhood, defining her career, loving a man who is wounded, and guess what, she’s broke ass fuck but still looks cute and has fun. I need that, but someone else to write it so I can enjoy. Props to all the other fanfic writers! Can we get something like this published or on the screen? FYI, I do not care if the romantic interest is Black, white, Asian, whatever. It does not matter to me. I want intelligent writing and a protagonist who is not aloof, who is vulnerable, delicate, actually works a challenging job, and inspires adoration not just because, but because she is seen. I swear if I have to sit through one more scene of a boring white girl in a perfect messy bun take a half bite of a pastry in slow motion I’m going to scream. Or watch a racially ambiguous girl get fawned over because of course she would because she’s slightly exotic and safe. AKA, she cannot be light skinned or mixed for the love of God! 

Side note: I do recommend Good Luck to You Leo Grande (the ending was a bit meh, but the rest excellent and my goodness Emma Thompson always makes me cry) and Enough Said (who knew James Gandolfini was a great romantic lead). Maybe middle aged and older white women are better viewing than millennials and Gen Z?

The internet’s ability to purposefully twist words and get offended by them isn’t exclusive to one side. This Jackson Wang controversy is blowing my mind. I can’t comment on anything else he’s done, I don’t like his music, but the people raging are absolutely stretching to the worst interpretation of his words. I don’t think there is any country that has a perfect government and yet many of us are still proud of our origins. China’s government isn’t the country. Like it or not, anti-chinese sentiment has been a major problem since covid. There was a mass shooting during a lunar new year celebration, yesterday. China has 1 billion people, not counting the diaspora, you cannot place the sins of the government onto them all.

My parents’ home country is a den of corruption, religious zealotry, misogyny, and a shit ton more. I disagree with many things, but I’m still proud to be from that culture. I still have some pride in being an American, enough to motivate me to change the country for the better. To be praising a white person who got surgery to be Korean, who immediately sold out queer people to appeal to the right, over a Chinese man correctly calling out sinophobia and having some pride in the country he hails from…I hope most of you are white. If not, I need you all to evaluate some severe hypocrisy and internalized racism, quickly.

I will never understand how quickly marginalized people will throw each other under the bus. It’s rude, but I can confidently say that the international POC attacking are from countries that also need to get their shit together. Don’t throw stones in glass houses. Life isn’t fucking black and white. The horrible things done to your people doesn’t remove the pain inflicted onto others. The Uyghur crisis is abominable. East Asian people being targeted because covid was marketed as the “China virus” is also bad.

Please adapt to keeping multiple complex subjects in mind simultaneously.

It's funny how I see a lot shitting on the King of All Cosmos for being the worst father ever but never anyone shitting on the Queen of All Cosmos

Because yes she loves her son as much as her husband does and her description says she is very proud of him, support him behind the scenes and is concerned about him, and she doesn't punish him or insult him like he does when he fails

But she still can be very demanding and critical when he fails rolling up enough people in We ♡ Katamari and it seems like she too thinks maybe too much about fans and their requests like "Oh hon, I can't say I'm thrilled. It's not nice. Make sure you roll everyone up next time, OK?", "Roll in more fans, for Cosmos' sake!! Names of the crew? I certainly don't want to see those. This is a game, after all. Amuse us!", "I'm a little disappointed. What do you think you're doing, refusing to roll up these poor people? It's boring to just have the credits!", "Everyone seemed to enjoy being rolled into a Katamari, but... There must be more Katamari fans around somewhere! Don't just believe what's in front of your eyes!". And if you do reach the maximum she says "All the fans look so happy ♥️ They're all rolled up in a Katamari, after all. That was another one of my ideas. Isn't it dreamy?" implying fulfilling all these requests may be her idea she inspired the King to have all along ! And she seems like an airhead. She does nothing when her husband is an ass to the Prince, but one could say that either she is not aware or that she always makes him pay after for hurting her baby (I mean he canonically IS afraid of her when she is angry so it means she has a temper and does not hesitate to stand up to him when she thinks he does shit). However, supposing she doesn't know, it would mean she is unaware of the obvious, and if she knows but since we see she is as demanding as her husband to her 5 cm tall son when it comes to rolling it means she could also approve or be like "none of my business" about the punishments

But that's not all when I say she is an airhead. She is also accidentally innocently neglectful. The whole plot of Katamari Forever is she doesn't notice all the danger happening to her son and his cousins because she is busier tending to her comatose then amnesiac husband and she doesn't even notice they built the Roboking to replace him nor that he goes on a rampage and she forgets where her son is or about him quite a lot

And the plot of Katamari Online is how she and the King accidentally unplug a black hole and flee à la "UH WE DIDN'T DO IT LET'S LET OTHERS FIX" leaving the Prince and his cousins do it while they could fix it better like cowards or people who didn't want to ruin their vacations when they knew the kids could do it anyway (STILL)

She always has her priorities straight it seems !

I doubt it is malicious, she just seems... forgetful, easily distracted, with a touch of being irresponsible like her husband

We see also she is clumsy since she often trips and spills her cookies and when she was a teenager she met her future husband because she was late at school because she was too busy enjoying herself eating bread. So easily distracted not paying attention to what goes on around her (do maybe she is not an airhead which can be pejorative but just has a form of ADHD ?) and a touch of only wanting to have fun, being a better wife than a mother as much as qhe loves her baby and is relatively better and kinder with him than his dad and could potentially, for what we know, be mad as fuck against her husband if he goes too far (or physical, maybe she is fine if it is verbal but physical she goes into Mama Bear mode)

Speaking of her teenhood... she was a teenager, and yet seemed to live on her own. She had her own cottage, we never see her family or hear about them, in fact all the cousins are on the King's side, and as soon as the Emperor accepted her she went to live with them in the castle

So either she was an orphan who did her best on her own not knowing how it is to be raised and so had a hard time repeating it, or she had parents who gave 0 shit about her and never visited and essentially abandonned her there never coming back and only sending her a postcard for her birthday and Christmas (like Soos' dad or Lola's mom) and potentially never even knowing she married into royalty and had a kid and keep sending postcards to her old address not knowing or caring if she reads them anymore or not, so while trying to be and IS much better than them she can't help but but repeat the neglect she had to a lesser extent the same way the King repeats to a lesser extent the harsh education he had. She is a free spirit and knows how to have fun and cook and do chores by herself which habits she kept evn as a queen probably after years of taking care of herself, but she also lacked an adult guidance to help her mature in some topics so she can be irresponsible for other topics notably motherhood which she hardly experienced and just like how he wants to catch up all the free and fun time he lacked growing up she just goes on living by her rules à la "WOO NO PARENTS I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT" (probably developped as a coping mechanism not to feel sad and alone) forgetting she IS the parent now. And both wanting to spend time together plus how she may want to make sure her son is capable and independant to live on his own like she was so can be exigent because we never know if one day he will be an orphan like she was or just thinks that would be a good experience to be an adult so she agrees with her husband letting him do it all himself if it is doable indeed

As for supporting her husband with his will to fulfill all fans requests, could be because she herself is supportive in his dream to be loved since she met him when he was very lonely and feeling unloved and doesn't think it isn't the mature way. Both of them are essentially still teenagers in their head who do stuff because "OMG THAT'S SO COOL"

So in conclusion : she was neglected or orphaned (I will go with neglected, that's why she has a roof over her head), repeats it accidentally at times on her own son not helped with her being easily distracted and focused or unfocused and forgetful which could be because of ADHD, wants her son to best himself always more to make sure he is independant like she grew to be and will be a good king like his dad, and just like the latter is essentiallty a better spousr than parent as much as she means well and loves the Prince so much
