everyone thinks about bloodbending, drawing air from the lungs and even earthbending with bones, but the body temperature. what's stopping a firebender from simply heating the core temperature so high that you kill someone through a fever? imagine the assassin potential.

Left-handed Katara

The second part of this post - animated this time. It started as a sub-theory, but with time more evidence appeared.

So, basically, the suggestion was that Katara was born left-handed, but was taught to use her right hand, - based on her habit to use left hand for waterbending before she got any proper teaching. I know I can be wrong, but there are some things this idea came from.

I cannot make gifs so I borrowed them from this hashtag from this blog if not stated otherwise.

So, in the very first episode, we see Katara trying to waterbend the fish out of the ocean. She starts with her left hand, then uses both, maybe because she doesn't feel very confident here.

In the next episode she's bending again, trying to freeze the attackers. She uses both hands, but the strike comes from her left - both times.

In "The Warriors of Kyoshi" all her bending is done with her left hand - practicing, escaping from unagi, getting water from Aang's lungs (the last two are from here).

In this episode she also sews Sokka's pants, holding a needle in her left hand.

Now, let's look at Katara trying to perform the water whip from the waterbending scroll. During her very first attempt, she strikes with her left hand (this gif is from here) - compare to Aang performing this correctly with his right hand (gif from here).

For the second attempt Katara switches to the right hand, although the water follows the movements of her left one, hitting Momo behind her - I could not find a gif for this moment, so I had to ask the more creative co-author to make it.

And her first succesfull attempt is also left-handed.

After "The Waterbending scroll" Katara starts using her right hand for waterbending - she never did it before, only left or both hands together. She still sometimes uses the left one alone, but much less, so I will not focuse on these examples. She was obviously taught as a right-handed waterbender, so it's only logically that since episode 9 she will mostly use her right hand.

So the last one - little Katara throws a snowball. It is not waterbending, but still: she does this the way that is most natural for her, and it is throwing with her left hand (these gifs are from here).

as most of us in the ATLA fandom know by now, there's gonna be both an adult gaang movie coming out at some point and the live action netflix show in 2024

and I may be connecting some dots

for the adult gaang movie:

1: we don't know who Izumi's other parent is besides zuko

2: TLOK comics say that zuko worked to outlaw homophobic laws input by sozin

3: we have no idea if sokka and suki stayed together/had kids

4: in the ATLA comics zuko and mai break up, and reconcile- but don't get back together

5: ATLA has always been ahead of its time in terms of representation of POC, disabled people, LGBTQIA+ people, etc.

for the live action

1: it is going to be canon-divergent, this was confirmed because some characters will be appearing in season 1 that weren't introduced until season 2 in the og show-

2: Mike + Brian (atla creators) left the project in 2021 because of "creative differences" when it comes to ideas

3: netflix loves making money off of gay people.

4: when Mike + Brian left, and when the "creative differences" emerged, was AFTER the explosion of zukka-

sidenotes:

there are official, fully canon letters to zuko from uncle iroh about their lives- and therefore, about the gaang, in "The Legacy of The Fire Nation" the one about sokka contains... this.

"the prince and the fool. but is that all you and sokka were, or were to one another? no, I think not.//and sokka needed you, zuko..."(continues but I'm cutting it off here bc this is all that matters.)

I have the threads of an Azula theory.

Disclaimer: This is about the Last Agni Kai, which I haven’t watched in a while because it makes me cry. Also this is a theory. It’s a train of thought. I’m not proclaiming it to be absolute truth or anything.

But I was thinking about Azula shooting lightning at Katara. Now, Azula isn’t exactly making the most strategic decisions here since she’s having a…rough time, to put it mildly. But I was also thinking about what her thought process could have been (since her exterior only really goes to show that she’s…having a rough time).

Now in Azula’s eyes, she knows she’s not winning this fight. Between Zuko having improved and her being a mess, she’s clearly fighting an uphill battle. She’s going to lose and she knows it. She also probably thinks Zuko won’t kill her. Although they’ve battled before, it would take really specific and clear intent to kill on his part since they’re not like…on an airship or a gondola. They’ve been shooting big up until this point, but they’ve also kind of been toying with one another.

Then Zuko asks her where her lightning is. Something she probably hasn’t considered using, because up until this point, she didn’t think she would have to. And she sees Katara. But here’s the thing: did Azula plan to have Zuko jump in front of the lightning and fail to redirect it? You have to keep in mind that Azula hasn’t seen the majority of Zuko’s interactions with Team Avatar. She hasn’t seen him be this selfless, hell, he’s never BEEN this selfless until now. Azula also, as we’ve seen, struggles to understand real, unconditional love. She certainly wouldn’t jump in front of lightning for anyone except maybe Ozai, and that’s…not unconditional. So would she understand this? Maybe not. And Azula doesn’t know anything about lightning redirection. What makes her think that Zuko wouldn’t be able to redirect the lightning if he jumped in front of it. After all, he did redirect quite a bit of it.

So if we follow these theories (and again, they’re only theories), this leaves one possibility: Azula was actually trying to kill Katara. But why? Azula doesn’t care about Katara. We’ve never seen her delight in violence for the sake of it. Why not focus on the fight at hand? If I were her, I wouldn’t want to risk involving Katara at all. She’s struggling enough as is, and even she should know that Katara’s a powerful opponent. They were evenly matched in Crossroads of Destiny.

Let’s think about Azula’s mental state right now. Her brother and her best friends have all abandoned her. Her father’s love, the one thing she hung onto, is meaningless and she’s only realizing this now. At her lowest point, she’s been reminded of her mother: the first person to call her a monster, and that is what she believes she is. No one loves her. She has nothing left to fight for. And the one scrap of validation she has left, which is being better than Zuko, is slipping away. What’s left? Why stay around in this state?

So: what if Azula was trying to kill Katara so that she could make Zuko furious enough to kill her?

Just a thought.

A friend of mine had a thought:

Y‘all know how in the episode The Puppetmaster, Katara tells the story of little Nini and how she disappears and is a ghost trying to get warm. She also says that sometimes you can see the smoke coming from her house. Katara also swears that it was a real story which happened to her mom. Anyways looking at it from a perspective of mythology, couldn’t those sorts of ghost stories be the explanation that Kanna‘s generation told Kya and Hakoda‘s, to explain why so many of their people went missing during the raids, going down to the detail of fearing smoke. Furthermore right after the story, Hama appears, Hama is one of the „missing ghosts“ who is now making others disappear.

Avatar the Last Airbender theories I had that turned out to be false

So unlike literally everyone else, I didn't grow up with ATLA and discovered it sometime when I was in high school. Can't remember exactly when. Because of this, I created a few theories as I was watching for the first time, trying to predict where the show would go. All of these ended up being completely wrong, but they're fun, so I thought I'd share them!

Zhao becomes the Firelord

Sooooo funny story with this one. I actually had two exposures to ATLA before I actually watched it and one of them was THE SERIES FINALE. I didn't see the whole thing, but I did catch a huge chunk of the ending. So before I even started watching officially, I knew Zuko was gonna be a good guy, which is why I never gave up on him. XD This also means that I got to see Ozai's FACE.

Ozai doesn't show his face in book 1, and by the time I started watching, I'd forgotten what Ozai's voice sounded like. I also had very little idea of who I'd seen Aang fighting in the finale was in the first place. So I kinda took one look at Zhao and said "YES. HIM." The theory went like this:

Zhao slowly climbs the ranks of the Fire Nation over the course of the series, growing more and more power hungry as time goes on. Eventually, he gets to the point where he overthrows/assassinates Ozai and becomes the new Firelord. Aang has to fight him in the finale and Zuko has to take the throne that's rightfully his back.

Imagine my disappointment when Zhao got eaten in the book 1 finale. XD I was so convinced of this theory that I didn't even believe he was really gone for a looong time after this.

2. Zuko is a Double-Bender

Remember the Blue Spirit episode? Of course you do. Well, there's this split second clip as Zuko's rescuing Aang where he picks up a bucket of water and splashes it on a guard or something. I completely missed the bucket on my first watch of this episode and concluded that whoever this Blue Spirit guy was, he was a Water Bender. I then proceeded to get my mind absolutely BLOWN when I realized the Blue Spirit was actually Zuko. I started going crazy with theories that Zuko was secretly a Fire Bender AND a Water Bender. Hence, a Double-Bender. I asked a friend about this theory of mind and she sadly debunked it for me. However, this is still my favorite ATLA theory to this day and I have an entire AU centered around it. One day I'll get around to actually writing it.

3. Jet is a major recurring character

So the other time that I got ATLA spoilers before watching it was when I accidentally half-watched most of Jet's introductory episode. The friend I was with at the time groaned in annoyance at Jet, leading me to believe that he showed up A LOT and he was the worst thing this show had to offer. I fully expected Jet to pop up ALL THE TIME and make a nuisance of himself. I was relieved to discover he doesn't come in nearly as much as I thought he would.

4. Ba Sing Se stuff

Rapid fire round! I thought a lot of things about everything that happened in Ba Sing Se:

Team Avatar all get brainwashed by the Dai Lee except for like Sokka or someone, who then becomes wanted by the entire brainwashed city and has to figure out how to reverse all this.

Zuko happily lives out the rest of his days with Uncle Iroh at the tea shop and never runs into Team Avatar again.

5. Azula alone

Team Avatar frees the entire city of the brainwashing. Specifically Joo Dee.

Yeah, I thought all of Ba Sing Se was brainwashed, not just some people.

I was 100% convinced that Mai and Ty Lee were going to betray Azula at some point during book 2 and then join Team Avatar. I guess this kinda happened? Kinda?

Aaaaand this is all I can think of for now. I'll make another post if I think of more theories I had, but this is about it. :)

Ok, so: yaangchen had severe issues with her connections to past lives, kuruk had a lot of troubles with spirits, kyoshi had trouble mastering the elements at first, roku was useless, aang fucked up the avatar state super hard by being in that iceberg so long, and korra had trouble accessing airbending and the avatar state.

THEREFORE, I CONCLUDE that raava was getting all wonky and misfiring and needed to be unplugged and plugged back in to clear their cache and reboot.

I FINALLY FIGURED OUT!

you guessed it. ATLA THEORY TIME!!!!

Remember this scene?

Azula was able to trick Toph in this scene, and I think it's not because her heart is cold (wink at the antis and shows my middle finger) nor she has her breathing under control, nor because she is just this manipulative.

I think it's because of the addition of so much unnecessary and unknown information for Toph. She includes 3 colour names and her "height", wich I severely doubt it was even taught for Toph. Also, she was describing the shape on an animal differently of what it looks like, wich would have to include Toph's imagination for her to figure how the fuck it looked- wich is also a hint. Toph doesn't know how a platypus-bear looks like. She can tell its weight probably, and its general shape and form, but not how it looks.

Therefore, I think Toph was mostly stunned by the clear discrepancy of what she was sensing, what was being described and especially the riddled information.

I have a theory about the song Iroh sings when begging on the streets, and its making me appreciate this show even more. And we know how much depth the show has already. Sooo:

“It’s a long long way to Ba Sing Se…”

Guys. Its a refugee song. What if it was sung by people fleeing to the city of Ba Sing Se for refuge. Imagine them singing to lift spirits because yes, it would be a great distance to travel. Men, women, children of all nations, all hungry and tired and hope waning.

And I imagine there are more verses than what we hear Iroh singing too, not just about pretty girls.

And Iroh likely heard it during his attempted siege.

Another ATLA fic I’ll write if I ever get the motivation:

So, the comics show us that Ursa (Zuko and Azula’s mom) married Ozai with absolutely no choice in the matter — she was a random commoner who had Firelord Azulon and his second born son show up at her doorstep just because she was descended from Avatar Roku.

According to Azulon, this was because the Sages told him having the Avatar’s bloodline tied to his own would result in immensely powerful children.

But I’m extremely convinced the actual reason was that there was not a single eligible noblewoman in the the Fire Nation who would even consider marrying Ozai due to his odious personality, and thus Azulon had to get creative with arranged marriages.

(More serious possibility is that Azulon knew even then Ozai was power hungry enough to backstab family and didn’t want his younger son marrying into a politically influential family, hence why he tracked down the long-dead Avatar’s family. Not a disgrace to the Firelord’s bloodline, but not helpful for Ozai either.)

Could Ty-Lee be considered an energy bender?

I wouldn’t doubt if someone had already considered this theory before, but I tried finding if anyone had this idea. Nothing came up, so I guess I have to talk about it!

This semester, I have a TV in my dorm room, and a cool roommate to watch ATLA with. He has never seen the show, and quickly fell in love with it. Through his eyes, I’ve been seeing it all for the first time with new thoughts…

Introduction:

I know that Aang discovers energy bending at the end of the show. This is, of course, how he removes Ozai’s fire bending, rendering him powerless.

While energy bending is shown and described, very little detail is given in terms of its limitations, leaving me with many questions;

Is the Avatar the only person who can be an energy bender?

Is energy bending only accessible via Lion Turtle, or can it be inherited like other methods of bending?

Is the level of energy bending displayed by Aang only representative of a fully realized energy bending master combined with the power of the Avatar?

If methods of bending are learned from nature- fire from dragons and the sun, air from flying bison, water from the moon, and earth from badger moles- then energy bending must be granted from lion turtles. Does this mean that all other creatures can theoretically gift a human with bending abilities?

With all these questions left unanswered, it is hard to give a concrete answer to the nature of energy bending. What makes this even more complicated is the abilities of Ty-Lee.

Ty-Lee and Her Power

There are already many theories that debate Ty-Lee’s ancestry and its connection to Air Nomad Refugees. I am not opposed to the idea that she could have air bending abilities, but it would only be consistent with the canon if she was unaware of them; hence why she only “seems” to air bend. However, this can be explained as many years of practice and strength training that allows her to defy gravity.

The power that captured my attention in my latest re-watch is her unique ability of chi-blocking. Before, I accepted this as a form of general martial arts that she had learned over time, as being connected to Azula would easily grant her access to higher levels of self defense training.

However, I then compare her abilities to Aang. Ty-Lee has the ability to temporarily remove someone’s bending, something that she calls “chi-blocking.”

If I recall correctly, the entire concept of Chi is that it’s spiritual energy that flows everywhere. Ty-Lee, most likely unaware of her ability, is literally energy bending.

Of course, this would be the case assuming that not only the Avatar can energy bend, along with confirmation that full removal of bending is only possible at a level of energy bending mastery with the power of the Avatar.

Ex) while toph is powerful, I doubt she could move tectonic plates and create a separate island like Kiyoshi did

Another thing that makes Ty-Lee’s “chi blocking” interesting to me is her canonical ability to see people’s auras. Because she is able to manipulate chi, she can go as far to **physically see** the chi (or energy) that surrounds people’s bodies.

Of course, it would be easy to brush off as a metaphor, or even just Ty-Lee being a bit kooky. However, the latest rewatch made me realize that she says it so matter-of-factly, as if she has been able to do this her entire life, as if this is her normal.

I also want to point out that her ability to see auras could be similar to how Toph is able to earth bends: they can feel and “see” the medium they are bending, thus making it easier for them to bend.

It could be explained that her ability to disable someone’s bending is just another form of her ability to disable someone’s use of their arm (see when she fights Sokka). However, those are genuine pressure points, and this method of fighting has been studied scientifically.

This is not at all like the method of temporarily disabling bending. There are no physical signs of this; no muscle weakness, atrophy, or numbness. All that happens is the loss of bending, which can be seen as well when Aang defeats Ozai.

Of course, for this to be true would also mean that bending is of another energy that would inevitably cause a deficit once removed, causing physical weakness.

Because Ty-Lee is not on the same power level of Aang, assuming that his power is what allows him to remove bending, she can only block chi. Of course, it is possible that Ty-Lee unknowingly has this ability and just never has the necessary situation to use it.

This would explain why Katara, only having her energy disconnected temporarily and not removed, would not experience any physical effects as there would not be an energy deficit.

What Would this Mean for Ty-Lee’s Character?

If Ty-Lee is an energy bender, it raises many questions of her origins that could be important to the overall writing of ATLA.

Although the children born of the previous Avatars only have been seen to bend what their original bending nation was, it could be possible that Ty-Lee inherited her energy bending from relation to previous Avatars.

Whether this is because she is related to a distant air nomad Avatar or even Roku (which could explain how she had the possibility of meeting Azula in the first place, as she could be of a noble family).

In the show, Aang faces every kind of bender, many of them being more advanced in skill than Aang. The threat of Ty-Lee’s potential energy bending would seem powerful and impossible to overcome. This makes Aang’s mastery of energy bending more satisfying!

This could also explain why Azula confront’s Ty-Lee in the beginning of season 2. Knowing of her ability, Azula would absolutely monopolize it in case it needs to be used on the Avatar. Azula could have gotten any skilled fighter to accompany her, and yet she chose Azula.

You may ask, “well then why is Mai there?” In my opinion, including Mai is just a method for Azula to manipulate Zuko (knowing of their romantic history) and use Mai’s presence as psychological warfare. Her skill, although apparent, is irrelevant to fighting in general. This is its own separate theory, though.

Is Ty-Lee the Only Energy Bender Seen in ATLA?

The more that I analyze the show, I think of how Ty-Lee is very connected with spirituality. When I observe other “spiritual” characters, I also think of Iroh.

It is important to note that Iroh was jaded for his entire life by the programming from the fire nation. Assuming that Iroh has only began his spiritual journey after his failure at Ba Sing Se, he has not put much time into practicing this.

Ty-Lee has spent her entire life fine tuning her skills, unlike Iroh.

I think that energy bending, unlike other bending methods, could be learned. Considering chi is constantly flowing and is everywhere, it is inherently more available than other types of bending.

While Iroh can’t bend energy, he is tapped into chi and spirituality in general. He seems to know things that others don’t, somehow being able to say the exact thing someone needs to hear.

This is something that Ty-Lee can also do. She is often needing to read emotions, and placates Azula when she is at her most stressed. This is basically the much unhealthier version of Iroh and Zuko’s relationship.

So while the level of energy bending shown from Ty-Lee is not matched by other spiritual characters, it does seem that it can be learned over time while others have a higher predisposition. If anything, I’d compare it to midi-chlorians allowing people to have a higher sensitivity to the Force.

As far as canon from the show alone goes, Ty-Lee seems to be self taught, the show implying that only circus training could teach her this fighting method. Color me not-convinced.

Note; I do believe that there are energy benders alone in LOK, but I haven’t seen the entire show as it didn’t do the same thing for me that ATLA did. I know it’s important to consider all sources, but this is what I have! Feel free to reblog with explanations/thoughts that correct anything in this post.

Wonderful theory shared by the wonderful Prying_Pandora:

The biggest regret of the previous Avatar leaves an echo in the next one. Like generational trauma being passed within yourself. Kyoshi regretted using too firm a hand on the EK by giving the King the Dai Li, and likely held some guilt over Chin the Conquerer (hence why she claims she killed him even though he actually fell). As a result, Roku was more timid and hesitated with Sozin. Roku ran from the truth of what Sozin was and didn’t stop him when he should’ve. Aang therefor also ran away from his destiny, and struggled with finding a way to put Ozai down for good. Aang couldn’t let go of his material love to reach full enlightenment. Therefor Korra was a great bender but struggled with spirituality.
