Attack on Prime: Autobot Anthology "Matrix of Leadership"
Main Story
Lobbing
Ice Skating
Comfort
This was brought up by a guest reviewer under the name of 'Svecz Dávid' and it was something I should have brought up but kept on forgetting so thank you for that!
This will take place just before chapter 77 in AOP.
Wheeljack was tightening the screws on the panel of the Jackhammer while Arcee was looking over their datapad in silence. As Wheeljack finished fixing up the Jackhammer, a thought occurred to him.
"'Cee," Wheeljack called for her, "A thought occurs."
Arcee hummed absentmindedly, browsing through some old Cybertronian literature.
"Why didn't we ask Prime to show us the Matrix of Leadership?" Wheeljack asked, "That's like...the biggest evidence he could even provide."
Arcee raised her helm to process Wheeljack's question. Her optics narrowed at the thought, and when the realization finally came to her, she covered her face in shame.
"Primus below! We are so fragging stupid!" Arcee yelled, her servos muffling her voice. Wheeljack just started cackled, finding the whole situation hilarious.
==
"The what of what?" Sasha asked in confusion as Hanji began flipping through their notes.
"The..." Arcee grimaced a little, ashamed to even admit her own failure in this, "Matrix of Leadership."
"Ancient relic, ultra powerful tool of the Primes, only thing that would even make a Prime a legit Prime," Wheeljack listed.
"The collective wisdom of the Primes." Hanji read, "If the device is removed from the holder or relinquished, the holder could suffer amnesia with no ability to remember their time without the Matrix of said Matrix is restored."
Everyone looked at Hanji in surprise.
"Commander, how do you know that?" Eren asked.
"Oh, I eavesdropped on Optimus' little history lesson to you years ago," Hanji answered casually.
"Commander," Optimus scolded.
"Erwin asked for information on you and who was I to defy orders," Hanji reasoned.
"You would have gotten that info regardless if Erwin told you," Levi shot back.
"Maybe." Hanji shrugged.
"You also called the Matrix a 'parasite'?" Armin leaned backwards to see the notes that Hanji had written on the subject matter.
"Yeah, I stand by that," Hanji declared.
"What does this have to do with Optimus?" Mikasa asked Arcee.
"If Optimus actually has the Matrix, then we can't assume that he's a fake," Arcee groaned in shame, ducking her helm a little to avoid eye contact.
The Survey Corps was quiet for a moment before Jean spoke up. "Are you fucking serious?!"
"Jean," Optimus warned.
"No! What the hell?! This whole tension bullshit could have been avoided if they had just asked about it in the first place!" Jean yelled.
"All those months of tensions and stand offs!" Connie lamented.
"Look it slipped our minds, okay?!" Arcee exclaimed, "We figured the Star Saber was the best way to go because Optimus was the only one who could pick it up! Anyone can take the Matrix for themselves or make a copy of the fragging thing!"
"Arcee is right," Optimus spoke up.
"Don't defend her!" Levi ordered.
"There have been false primes in the past who have tried to forge a fake Matrix in order to gain political power," Optimus explained, "But the Matrix has to be granted to the holder by Primus. He is the one who held the Matrix in the core of Cybertron."
"And Primus is..," Sasha trailed off.
"Uh...god." Wheeljack pondered the right words.
The 104th tilted their heads towards Optimus.
"You've met god?!" Jean asked.
"That's another story for another day." Levi shut down, already getting a headache at the implications of Prime's long-winded life, "Prime, why the hell didn't you show the Matrix in the first place?!"
"The Matrix is within my chassis. If I opened my chassis, I would be exposing the Matrix and my spark, and Arcee and Wheeljack were already mistrusting of me. I did not want to put myself in danger like that," Optimus explained.
Wheeljack rubbed the back of his helm. "Fair."
"I suppose...I don't trust people...easily," Arcee grumbled.
"So...Are we going to see it, or-!" Hanji's question was answered when they all heard and saw the mechanics of Optimus' chassis move. The plating had folded in on itself, and when it was completed, everyone saw a strange device locked and planted in his chest. It looked like some shards of energon were inside of an incomplete golden sphere. The sphere itself was surrounded by a rectangular outline of silver metal. There were some other mechanics and parts that none of them could recognize, no doubt part of Optimus' biology, but the reactions on Arcee and Wheeljack's faces were more than enough.
Wheeljack pointed at Optimus' open chassis before glancing at Arcee. "That looks pretty real. Between the forge and the Allspark container, ancient relics tend to have some kind of vibe."
Arcee raised an eyebrow at that. "A vibe?"
"Yeah, a 'do not touch' vibe." Wheeljack justified his reasoning.
Optimus merely closed his chassis before crossing his arms in response. "Does that give you some form of closure?"
Arcee nodded her helm. "It does."
"Oh thank god! We're finally past this bullshit!" Eren crumpled in relief.
"Well there's still Bu-!"
Eren clamped his hand over Connie's mouth. "Past. It."
Hanji blinked when they realized what Connie was talking about: Megatron. There was still going to be tension about him regardless. Things might have become a little calmer, but...a thought occurred. One that they wanted to ask the former warlord when he comes by later.
==
Later
"No new updates?" Hanji asked in their office. They were sitting on top their desk, legs swinging back and forth.
"No," Megatron answered them in his human form, "Everything's been stagnant as of late. I have no new tasks for Lionheart as of now."
"Hm. Well, I guess if something urgent comes up, let me know," Hanji said, "Wait! One more thing!"
"What?" Megatron hissed.
"I'm certain you know what the Matrix of Leadership is," Hanji began.
"...I'm not telling you what I know." Megatron crossed his arms.
"You don't need to. That thing is a parasite, but that's not what I wanted to ask," Hanji insisted, "Wheeljack and Arcee asked about the Matrix because they explained that it's what makes a true Prime."
"So?"
"You didn't ask about it," Hanji proclaimed, "Ever since you came here, you didn't ask Optimus to show the Matrix to prove his identity. You didn't question Optimus at all. For someone so mistrustful of everyone and everything, you trusted completely that Optimus was Optimus."
Megatron mouthed form a thin line. "You want to know why."
Hanji nodded.
"....." Megatron knew he shouldn't say anything, but he knew it was going to be a question Hanji wouldn't shut up about. How much could he say where it wouldn't compromise him too much?
"I don't have to tell you my business." Megatron decided to go on the offensive. He didn't need to tell them.
"Ugh, Megatron." Hanji rolled their eyes, "Don't make me guess."
"Goodbye," Megatron bid them farewell and deactivated the holoform. Hanji sighed and rested their cheeks on their hands.
"Grumpy asshole," Hanji grumbled.
Megatron continued to fly north, assuming the Autobots weren't at the neutral ship. But...the Commander was right. He didn't question that it was Optimus. Not even for a second.
Well...he had nothing left. If Optimus was who he said he was, then he can try to make amends with him. If Optimus wasn't who he said he was, what more did he even have to lose?
(It was literally hope and desperation driving him that he didn't question Optimus about the Matrix. Anyway, thanks Svecz Dávid for the idea.)

Voltron (two very different series with the same name set in the same universe? That's not gonna be confusing!)
[All images are owned by Toei Animation and World Events Productions. Please don’t sue me.]
As I mentioned before, my first exposure to anime (or, as I called it back then, “Japanimation”) was Star Blazers and an anthology series called Force Five (again, if anyone finds any footage of this series online, please let me know!)
However, years later I was exposed to another anime series that is likely to be more familiar to everyone.
[NOTE: As with Star Blazers, I am covering the American version of the series rather than the original Japanese, though there’s one difference between the two I’ll briefly mention when it comes up]
youtube
(Thanks to Peacock Kids)
(Yes, the narrator is none other than Peter Cullen, who is the voice of Optimus Prime. Nice to know Voltron has the support of the Autobots!)
Voltron (AKA Voltron III, Voltron of the Far Universe,or Lion Force Voltron) tell the story of a team of five Space Explorers who travel to a planet known as Arus to assist the government against an alien invasion. The five are entrusted to reawaken the planet’s primary defense: Voltron (why didn’t they have Voltron online before the invasion?)
Tumblr media
(Thanks to Al Kennon)
…a squadron of giant robot lions which…well, we’ll get to that in a bit.
Tumblr media
The leader of the team (henceforth called the Voltron Force) is Kieth, who pilots the Black Lion.
Tumblr media
Keith’s second in command is Lance, who pilots the Red Lion.
Tumblr media
Sven pilots the Blue Lion…until he’s hospitalized by an enemy agent (here’s the one difference I'm discussing: in the Japanese version “Sven” (I’m not looking up his Japanese name) is killed in the attack (obviously we couldn’t have the kids see someone die!). However, his twin brother appears late in the series; the American version has Sven make a return after his recovery) to be replaced by…
Tumblr media
…Princess Allura, ruler of Arus.
Tumblr media
Pidge pilots the Green Lion
Tumblr media
Hunk pilots the Yellow Lion.
The Voltron Force defends Arus against the forces of…
Tumblr media
King Zarkon
Tumblr media
Aided by the witch Haggar, who creates giant monsters (called Robeasts) to send against the Voltron Force.
Tumblr media
Zarkon’s son Lotor commands Zarkon’s armies and has a bit of a crush on Allura, determined to take her for his bride.
The battles are pretty much the same: The Lions attack the Robreast Of The Week, but are overmatched until…
youtube
(Thanks again to Peacock Kids)
After that, the fight’s a bit more even until Voltron finally creates its Blazing Sword weapon and slices the Robeast in half (why doesn’t it start with that?)
However, Voltron isn’t the only Defender of the Universe!
youtube
(Thanks to T. Winters)
The Galaxy Alliance is overcrowded and it’s up to the Space Explorers of the S.S. Explorer (really original name, guys!) to find new planets to colonize. This inevitable puts them at odds with the Drule Empire (it’s never officially stated if King Zarkon is part of the empire, but Drule’s giant monsters are also called Robeasts)
Like the Lion Force Voltron, this version of Voltron (AKA Voltron I, Voltron of the Near Universe,or Vehicle Team Voltron; there was supposed to be a third Voltron series, but negotiations between Toei (the animation studio that produced the original manga) and World Events (the American company that converted the series into Voltron fell through), the team consisted of smaller vessels that combined to form Voltron. Unlike Lion Force, the vessels were three squads of fighters that specialized in either air, land, or undersea combat.
youtube
(Thanks to reminators)
As many of you are aware (mainly due to the fact that NO ONE remembers the Vehicle Team series), the Lion Force became the most popular of the two, and their story has been retold at least twice.
As always, if you would like to see an episode reviewed, please let me know!

Welcome!
Hello and welcome to my blog, @ratta-tat-nat! This blog is where I discuss my life. I am a 22-year-old Mexican American living in the Rocky Mountain state. A little about me is that I am an Aries (April 17th, 2001); I can be highly aggressive with other individuals who are stupid, lazy, and exhausting. Like people who don't know what the fuck they are doing at customer service and insurance companies. Nowadays, there is no sense of competence in any workplace, and it's ridiculous.
I can be passionate about the fandoms that I love! Many programs released for entertainment purposes could be more entertaining. The classics will always be a comfort for me. Here is a list:
Batman Anthology Series
The Batman
Sonic X
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)
Sonic Prime
Transformers (1984)
Beast Wars (1996)
Transformers (2007)
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)
Transformers Prime (2010)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite superhero from these fandoms is Batman. I love the dynamic between Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog. My favorite Autobot/Maximal/Decepticon are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Optimus Primal, Depth Charge, Megatron, and Soundwave.

Fanfiction Master Post
Okay so, I'm going to try and make a Master Post for my Fanfics.
Currently a work in progress, might add a "Read More" later on:
A Girl and Her Bike
AO3 Series | Spacebattles Thread | TV Tropes Page
Probably my post popular fanfiction ever, A Girl and Her Bike is a series of RWBY/Transformers crossover fics wherein Bumblebee the Autobot from Transformers is ALSO Bumblebee the motorcycle from RWBY. He and Yang serve as the main protagonists, with the focus being on their PLATONIC/sibling-like bond. (He's a two million year old war veteran, she's a teenaged lesbian. Get your heads out of the gutter.) It also has, by far, the largest expanded universe of any of my fanfic series. Current fics in the series are:
A Girl and Her Bike: Volume 1: On her 17th birthday, Yang Xiao Long got a motorcycle to celebrate going another year without getting killed by Grimm. However, what was meant to be a simple gift ended up bringing a war to the Rose/Xiao Long's doorstep. Now, between the Grimm, Atlesian Military, White Fang, and Decepticons, Yang and Bumblebee have their work cut out for them. (Complete) AO3 | FFN
A Girl and Her Bike: Spotlight Collection 1: What did Bumblebee, Ruby Rose, Winter Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long do after the Battle of Vytal? How will they adapt to the life-changing circumstances they've been thrust into. Read on to find out. (4/5 Spotlight Oneshots Complete, still working on Yang's) AO3 | FFN
Current spin-offs in the series:
Like Judas Thereupon Kissed: Prequel, set on Cybertron. "The war between the Autobots and Decepticons is one of the longest, bloodiest conflicts in the galaxy's history. So why is it that it started just after the two sides united against a common foe?" (In-Progress) AO3 | FFN
Myths of Cybertron: Anthology of in-universe works of fiction, compiled by certified nerd Glyph of the Cybertronian Historical Preservation Society. (4 myths compiled) AO3 | FFN
A Girl and Her Bike: Super Deformed CHIBI: In a world full of darker and edgier Transformers and RWBY fics, sometimes all you need are blatantly noncanon antics and hijinks to lighten your mood. Basically, a comedy-focused spin-off of "A Girl and Her Bike". (No planned ending) AO3 | FFN
A Girl and Her Bike: Jazz's Report: In-universe reports Jazz writes for Professor Goodwitch and Optimus Prime, providing further context for the setting. AO3 | FFN
Through the Shattered Glass
AO3 Series | Shares Spacebattles Thread with A Girl and Her Bike
Mirror Universe of "A Girl and Her Bike", wherein the heroes are villains and the villains are heroes. Installments are as follows:
Shattered Fragments: If we glance through the shattered glass, what distorted reflections would we see? In a universe opposite the world of A Girl and Her Bike, an alien war collides with an ancient conspiracy, shaking up countless lives throughout the world of Remnant. Their stories shall be collected here. (In Progress) AO3 | FFN
Dust and Decepticons
My other RWBY/Transformers crossover.
This one asks a very simple question: What would happen to Remnant if Atlas formed a secret alliance with the Decepticons prior to the events of the series? Fics in the series are as Follows:
Falling Stars: When aliens fell to Remnant in balls of flame, responsibility fell on General James Ironwood of the Atlesian Military to make first contact with these strange new beings. Who knows, perhaps these Decepticons could be the key to a new golden age? Surely keeping the existence of these strange new beings a secret couldn't possibly backfire! (In-Progress) AO3 | FFN
Epiphets of Megatron: Before he held two seats on Cybertron's High Council, Megatron was just another Cybertronian. However, over the course of his military career, in the defense of Cybertron, he has been called many things. Here is the story of how he earned those titles. (1/7 Chapters) AO3 | FFN
Miscellaneous
This is where I'll put any fics that aren't part of another series.
Y'know, when I feel up to it.
Check back here regularly for eventual updates.

Transformers: The Cybertron War Anthology
The Cybertron War Anthology is a fan continuity of Transformers, taking place in a verse where the Decepticons gained power democratically, following a disastrous defeat in a war against the Quintessons for control of the planet Junkion.
A terrorist attack would occur that left thousands dead and tens of thousands injured, and would give the Decepticons casus belli to declare war against the Quintessons, the Junkions, and anyone they deemed responsible for the attack.
But that attack is not what it seems, and a resistance effort, the Autobots, would spring up to combat the tyrannical overreach of the Decepticons as well as unveil the crimes and atrocities committed by the Cons, no matter the cost.
Even if that cost proves to be greater than expected...

High Wire (Armada)
Let's see what you can see...
This article is in need of images.Specifics: fiction and toy imagesThe name or term "High Wire" refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see High Wire (disambiguation).High Wire is a Mini-Con from the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.
Ohh, it's a deep burn! Oh, it's so deep! Oh, I can barely lift my right arm 'cause I did so many.
High Wire is a bike. Motivational, intelligent, yet ego-free, he believes unwaveringly in the power of teamwork, and though he wouldn't admit it, he is great at leadership.
He combines with his fellow Street Action Mini-Con Team members to form Perceptor. On at least one occasion he has demonstrated a limited ability to manipulate time.“All together, now!”

High Wire and the Mini-Cons were created countless millennia ago, spawned from with the cells of Unicron. Outwardly innocent and yet extremely powerful, the Mini-Cons' purpose was to engineer a power struggle between the Autobots and the Decepticons, creating conflict which would feed Unicron. Due to a time loop, however, High Wire encountered three children from 21st century Earth — Rad White and his friends Carlos and Alexis. Contact with Rad somehow weakened Unicron's conditioning, giving High Wire and the other Mini-Cons the ability to think for themselves. Drift
A million years ago, a ceasefire was called between the Autobots and the Decepticons, during which it was decided to banish the Mini-Cons from Cybertron so they would never be used as tools of war again. High Wire was among the Mini-Cons who were placed in stasis inside Mini-Con storage panels on board the starship Exodus for the long journey into deep space. Remembering his long-ago contact with Rad White, High Wire aimed the Exodus towards the planet Earth, where he knew Rad would one day be waiting for him.
However, during the launch of the Exodus, the Decepticon leader Megatron betrayed the ceasefire and attacked, hoping to take all the Mini-Cons for himself. The Autobots managed to hold off the Decepticons long enough for the Exodus to make it to a warp gate and leave Cybertron behind forever. After drifting through space for countless years, the Mini-Con ship collided with Earth's moon and broke apart, half of it remaining on the moon while the rest crash-landed on the planet's surface.
Thousands of years later, Rad White and his friend Carlos were exploring the caves under the local observatory when they discovered the remains of the Exodus. Rad was drawn to the glowing, green Mini-Con panel in the darkness, and when he touched it, the systems of the Exodus reactivated and sent a signal back to Cybertron. Now the Transformers knew what had become of the Mini-Cons. After Rad and Carlos exited the caves and met up with Alexis, they were confronted by Megatron himself. In his fear, Rad stumbled and dropped the Mini-Con panel, which activated and released High Wire. High Wire was shocked to see Megatron and scanned Rad's bicycle to enable the escape for his new friends and liberators. However, Megatron managed to stop them and demanded the humans turn over High Wire. Fortunately for all concerned, the Autobot leader, Optimus Prime, arrived to confront the Decepticon leader. First Encounter
As more Autobots and Decepticons arrived and began grappling with each other, High Wire and the humans fled back into the mountain caves to avoid getting trampled. High Wire led the children deep into the mountain where the Mini-Con ship was buried, and located his two inoperative friends, Grindor and Sureshock. When Carlos and Alexis touched their Mini-Con storage panels, they came to life just like High Wire, and the trio were reunited. Eager to try out the new Earth modes they scanned, the Street Action Team went racing through the countryside with their new human companions, crossing over rivers and straight up mountainsides. Reality soon caught up with them, though, as Megatron and the Decepticons tracked them down. Fortunately, Optimus Prime and his Autobots stepped in again to save the Mini-Cons from entrapment and slavery. Metamorphosis
After the Decepticons were driven off, the collected Autobots, Mini-Cons and humans retreated back into the mountain-ship to get to know one another. High Wire asked Optimus Prime if the Autobots would force the Mini-Cons to fight, but Optimus assured him that only the Decepticons treated Mini-Cons like slaves, and the Autobots would allow them to make their own decisions. Satisfied that their freedom would be respected, High Wire and his fellow Mini-Cons agreed to join forces with the Autobots. As the new alliance was forged, Mini-Con panels began to come on-line all over the globe, ensuring the Autobots would have plenty of work to keep them busy. Base
On their first Mini-Con hunt, High Wire and the Street Action Team worked with Optimus Prime in Big Canyon, surveying the area for any signs of storage panels. High Wire tried to get a higher vantage point by standing atop of Prime's foot. When the Decepticons arrived to intervene, the Street Action Team displayed their ability to combine for the first time, forming Perceptor. The agile Mini-Con gestalt miraculously overwhelmed both Megatron and Starscream until Optimus Prime could powerlinx with his new partner, Sparkplug, and unleash a Maximum Blast. Comrade
High Wire and the Street Action Team joined the kids in teaching Hot Shot how to play the game of "Tag" inside the Autobot base. Hot Shot was worn out trying to chase them down until he thought to use Jolt to "tag" the kids for him.

Hello everyone. It has come to my knowledge that not everyone is familiar with Transformers Legends, an anthology book from 2004 where several short stories from different continuities of the transformers universes are told.
One of these stories is called "Redemption Center", taking place in the G1 cartoon universe where Starscream loses his memory and is taken in by the Autobots, while being protected by Optimus the entire time. Since copies of the book in good condition are tricky to come by at a reasonable price, thought I'd scan the pages of Redemption Center and share with you all.
Enjoy!

Note
So I recently discovered there's a story called Redemption Center from this official anthology book called Transformers Legends. It takes place in G1 and Star gets amnesia and is taken in by the Autobots. While they're worried he's faking it OP is just really nice and protecting him and it makes me heart melt. Read the summary on Tfwiki if you haven't.
yeah i did read it!! i don't have access to the story itself but im planning to get my hands on it.... one day.....
there's a good fic (roughly) based on it here as well

The Mystery of the Transformer Decoys, Parts 1-3: A Whodunnit Adventure
This isn’t exclusively a Roberts’ publication. There were a lot of folks on this one, actually. Of course the first collaborative effort I cover here has five people on it for the writing alone, not to mention the art credits.
Tumblr media
I’ll be going through everything, of course, because it wouldn’t make sense not to, and also because it’ll be interesting to look at how all these young writer’s styles are going to play together.
And you read that right, Pounce and Wingspan are in this. They were in Liars, A-to-D- Pounce was holding the Galvatron puppet- and Eugenesis as minor characters. I’m excited to get a little more of their characterization.
Now, without further ado, let’s get into The Mystery of the Transformer Decoys.
Tumblr media
There he is, our main character- Nightbeat! Standing at over 90 feet tall and wearing the largest trenchcoat this side of Alpha Centauri, our boy’s well on his way to the robotic equivalent of lung cancer as he watches Sideswipe breakdance in an attempt to appease this god of detective prowess. Megatron might be looking to kill him, but’s he’s going to have to try a lot harder to bring this big guy down.
We get a little message from our ‘zine organizer and editor, Richard Ahern, on the nature of putting a thing like this together.
Tumblr media
Good on you for sticking to it, Ahern.
Part 1 of our story is written by Martin McVay; we open on a scene in the Celestial Spires, where Nightbeat and a co-conspirator are dealing with the spoils of Nightbeat’s most recent case- twenty turbo-fox brains on a rope, glowing with residual Matrix energy. Someone paid Nightbeat to find these things. Right off the bat, we’re getting weird. I dig it.
As the co-conspirator checks the goods for any alarm systems or bombs, Nightbeat stares out the window and muses on the way life is at present, with the war looming in the skies of Cybertron, ever present. He notices a light on in the tower across the way- strange, given that it’s late as shit. Before he can investigate further, Getaway snaps him out of his concentration, having finished with the brain chips.
Yeah, Getaway. Relax, he isn’t a completely morally-bankrupt bastard in this- that’s strictly an IDW thing.
By the time, Nightbeat’s gone back to the window, the light is out.
Part 2, written by Ahern, takes place a few weeks after Part 1, with the high-ranking Autobot who employed Nightbeat breaking out the death threats if he doesn’t get those skulls he paid for. It turns out these skulls have a sort of power to them, the sort that makes one loathe to part with the things once they’re in their possession. Still, Nightbeat is nothing if not a professional, and finally makes his way over to Wingspan’s base of operations.
The exchange is made, and Wingspan invites Nightbeat to take in the view from the roof.
Tumblr media
As Nightbeat leaves, we get the perspective of an onlooker- Pounce- who takes in the scene with glee, having been the one to set up the whole “problem” Nightbeat had been hired to handle, at Wingspan’s behest. He’s less gleeful to find that the guy he hired to tail Nightbeat isn’t terribly good at his job, seeing as he can, well, see him. He may end up having to kill Nightbeat if if he doesn’t get his act together, but that’s life, I guess. He then pulls the skulls from a case and throws them around his neck like a macabre string of Mardi Gras beads.
It was at this point I stopped what I was doing and made a sandwich to make sure my blood sugar hadn’t suddenly dropped, because things got sort of confusing, narrative-wise, and I legitimately couldn’t tell if it was a writing issue or the fact that all I’d eaten in the last 24 hours was a single bowl of shrimp linguini.
Then I came back, tried again, and determined that it was a bit of both.
In the middle of this part, we get some classic magazine advertising action, which helps clear up a bit of the confusion.
There’s a full-page ad for Transformers Junk Files, another ‘zine, this one being a TMUK writing anthology.
On the other page we get a character synopsis for Pounce, Wingspan, and Circuit, who we haven’t met yet in this story. We’ll get to him in a bit.
Turns out Pounce and Wingspan are clone brothers.
Tumblr media
Yep. Clone brothers.
(Their robot modes are pretty much identical.)
No, see, here’s the thing: these are actually established characters within the Transformers franchise. The only reason I didn’t catch it on my read-through of Eugenesis is because I was basing my interpretation of the characters on what was presented to me in Liars, A-to-D, where Pounce looks like this:
Tumblr media
And there isn’t an ounce of kibble visible to tell me he turns into a friggin’ big cat. I just figured that Liars Pounce and puma Pounce were separate entities. It’s not like these guys are huge players in the cartoons or Marvel comics- they were in a single episode of the original 80’s show.
Regardless, it would seem that Wingspan is not who he presents himself to be to Nightbeat, and that the Decepticons just got their hands on something very mysterious and very powerful.
Part 3, written by Charles Ellis, follows Nightbeat as he muses on Wingspan’s threat.
Tumblr media
Well, that’s… ominous.
Things are back to status quo for our good detective, until he’s brought on to solve a murder- excuse me, a cybercide. He arrives on the scene, and the scene is simply doused in mech-fluid.
No, mech-fluid is not at all similar to man-juice. It’s basically blood.
Nightbeat asks just who the hell got offed, and the current consensus seems to be that he was a member of the special branch of Security Forces- robots so deep undercover they practically don’t exist.
Nightbeat takes in the carnage, and quickly formulates a hypothesis based on the damage to the body, the destroyed computer, and the pain chips he’s found on the floor.
Tumblr media
In a brief aside, Nightbeat laments on the fact that he has no alt-mode- they’re a distinctly war-centric thing in the Marvel continuity- as he drives down the road in an honest-to-god jalopy. Then he sees Megatron, and that kind of ruins his day.
The plot catches up to Circuit as Nightbeat confronts him, demanding answers, seeing as he’s working with just about every mob in Iacon.
Circuit is an Autobot known for trying to cut a deal with everyone he comes into contact with. Deals that solely benefit him. He doesn’t have an alt, but he does have a pretty sweet ride that turns into an exosuit when needed. If you read IDW’s Robots in Disguise, you’ll remember him as the reporter who shows up repeatedly in the story there.
With a little moolah flashed his way, Circuit lets slip that he heard about someone seeing “Meggy” at a place called Slammer’s. It’s all he’s got, but Nightbeat’s trying to stay optimistic and heads out to investigate.

Let's wrap up the Autobot Anthology. Four Years after the War ended.
Titans and Energon
Holiday Celebration
Experiments
"Hey." Arcee snapped out of her daze when Wheeljack handed her some high grade energon. Arcee quietly took it before raising her servo in the air.
"Happy four year anniversary of the war being over," Wheeljack said.
"Four years, huh?" Arcee mused before taking a sip of her energon. She looked on to see the Survey Corps still training in the trees.
"You came all this way to give me energon?" Arcee asked him.
"And to keep you company," Wheeljack insisted, "Still working on contacting Cybertron."
"Not going as well as you'd hope?" Arcee asked.
"Could be better," Wheeljack proclaimed, "Still no sign of Eren?"
"Yeah, and everyone is feeling it," Arcee sighed, "...this sucks."
"Yeah it does." Wheeljack took a sip of his energon, "What do you think the 'Bots are doing right now?"
"Beats me," Arcee answered, "I bet they're having more fun than we are."
==
A million light years away
Bumblebee watched from the balcony as the Cybertronians celebrated the anniversary of the war being over. They drank Visco, they honored the fallen, the lights from the city shone brightly in the night sky, blocking out the stars. Bumblebee could see Predaking flying above with Darksteel and Skylynx, with the fourth predacon right behind them.
Bumblebee looked down at his reflection in the drink he held to see just how tired and sad he looked. He should be happy. Four years of little conflict, and Cybertron's reconstruction was going smoothly. They had just reopened Iacon in honor of Optimus Prime, but...he missed Optimus. He missed Arcee and Wheeljack. He knew that Arcee needed time away from the planet, but....he didn't expect her to be gone for so long. What was going on out there? Were they alright? Would they come back safely?
"Lieutenant Bumblebee, what are you doing up here all by yourself?" Bumblebee looked back to see a familiar slender psychiatrist with large glasses walk up to him with Visco in his servo.
"Sorry, Rung, I just needed...," Bumblebee trailed off when he noticed a straw with comical loops and twists in his drink, "Is that a swirly straw?"
"Oh, yes! I find them to be quite enjoyable! It makes drinking more fun!" Rung smiled with delight.
Bumblebee couldn't help but laugh. "I guess so. I didn't think you'd find something like a straw that fun."
"I have many interests and hobbies," Rung insisted, "But back to my question. What are you doing up here by yourself? You should be down there with your friends."
"...not all of my friends are here," Bumblebee mumbled before realizing what he just said, "Sorry, I shouldn't dump my problems on you like that."
"I'm a therapist," Rung reminded.
"Yeah, but...you're on break," Bumblebee retorted.
"I would still be more than willing to help out a friend." Rung placed a servo on his shoulder, "Now tell me: what troubles you?"
"...Arcee and Wheeljack aren't here," Bumblebee relented, "I miss them...and I thought they would be back by now, but...it's been three years."
Bumblebee leaned against the railing once again. "Seems selfish of me to complain, right? I haven't been that close to Wheeljack. Bulkhead knows him better. I know Arcee's been going through some hard times, I just...thought she would come back."
"Well, it's not wrong for us to be worried about friends and units we haven't seen in a long time," Rung began as he leaned against the railing too, drink in servo and hanging over the edge, "You don't know where they are and you're worried about their wellbeing. But...Arcee is just processing things at her own pace."
Bumblebee's mouth form a thin line. He wasn't a big fan of that answer.
Rung looked down at the crowd celebrating. "We all have our own problems and traumas, and we all process them differently. I've seen a variety of people come in through my door and not all methods I give will work the same for every single one of them. Arcee won't be able to process her traumas the same way that you have, and the two of you have been through tremendous hardships because of the war."
"...yeah." Bumblebee swallowed, remembering what he went through at Megatron's servo.
"But that doesn't mean you shouldn't fault Arcee for processing her trauma differently," Rung insisted.
"I'm not," Bumblebee grumbled, "I just..."
Rung waited, expecting an answer to come out, but Bumblebee sighed in defeat.
"I thought we finally achieved peace, real peace, on Cybertron, and I wanted Arcee and Wheeljack to be here with us. But...there's still problems and conflicts that I have to deal with and...it sucks. Like rogue Decepticons trying to rise up at overthrow the government or start terrorist attacks. I...just would have liked eternal peace, no matter how naive that seems." Bumblebee relented, "...I feel like I'm complaining."
Rung took a sip out of his drink through a straw. "Bumblebee, I'm going to let you in on a secret: eternal peace will never exist."
"Wow, that's blunt!" Bumblebee exclaimed in disbelief.
"It's the truth!" Rung declared, "All I have to do is gesture to Cybertron's history as proof. There's always conflict and problems that arise. Peace is achieved at the end of it, and there is a vow to not repeat those horrors, only for it to repeat a few million kilocycles later. As long as free will exists, then there will be no eternal peace. Maybe when we're dead, it will happen."
"...you're quite morbid, you know that?" Bumblebee was stunned while Rung laughed.
"I suppose so," Rung agreed, "But there's nothing wrong with striving for peace to last as long as possible. To help the next generation learn and not repeat the horrors of the past. One day it might happen, but it could be eons from now. We don't know."
Rung smiled. "And there is nothing wrong with trying to fight for peace and for a better world even when there are people who still resist. You are do a marvelous job, and I'm sure many are proud of you."
Rung placed a servo on Bumblebee's back. "You might not have everything you want right now, and I'm certain you want things to be easier, but...keep doing what you are doing. Things will work itself out in time. Peace might not be eternal, but I'm sure that it will continue to last your lifetime."
Bumblebee smiled a little before downing the rest of his Visco. "I guess that's the best that I can hope for."
Bumblebee stood up and patted Rung's shoulder. "Thanks, Rung."
"You're welcome," Rung said as Bumblebee walked away, "And hey!"
Bumblebee stopped in his step before turning to Rung.
"I bet that you will see Arcee sooner rather than later!" Rung predicted.
Bumblebee couldn't help but laugh. "Not a good idea to make false promises in your profession!"
"I swear on my spark!" Rung raised his drink into the air.
"Okay, Rung, I'll hold you to it!" Bumblebee waved goodbye, deciding to head down below and join the crowd. Meanwhile, Rung's smile disappeared as he lowered his drink. He looked up at the stars, hoping for a sign or even an answer to an unasked question, but nothing appeared.
Rung sighed as he leaned against the railing. He took a sip from his visco with a straw and mumbled to himself.
"...the beginning of the end..."
(Well, Autobot Anthology is over. So I will post the full list in a bit.)

Sparkplug Witwicky had thought that all the kids were in school, and with Meredith fulfilling a rare order from someone other than her husband and Judith running what appeared to be every washable item owned by half the town - and by the amount of camo, half of Sector Seven too, the mechanic had also assumed that heading to the Ark would be a decent place to engage in a few hours of solitary Asimov with the occasional Autobot for company. However, from the sight of a teenager sprawled idly in the command centre, such was not to be.“Chip.”From a pile of bean-bags on the floor before Teletraan-1, Chip Chase flopped his head backwards, glasses falling up towards his forehead in the process, “what?”Sparkplug frowned and tilted his head, “you’re not even trying to be dignified right now, are you?”“Uh…” Chip wrote half a line of code by touch and readjusted his laptop where he was balancing it on his stomach, “since I’m lying on every beanbag I own listening to Glee covers and modding Stellaris, I don’t think so.”“Glee and game modification,” the elder Witwicky said, lowering himself down to sit on the only beanbag that didn’t have part of the sixteen year old genius on it.
He hummed an affirmation and sat up a little, typing a few more pieces of code before pulling his glasses back into place to review. Sparkplug flipped past the introduction and foreword of the Asimov anthology he had been given for Christmas a few years back and trawled the contents for an interesting title until Chip paused in his typing again.“What is it you’re doing exactly?”Chip hummed and attacked the ‘page down’ key for a few seconds, “trying to put Cybertron in Stellaris, but the game doesn’t like it that much.”Sparkplug tried to recall what Stellaris entailed as he flipped to the first page of The Bicentennial Man, “That’s the one like Civilization but in space, right?”Chip nodded, “yep. But the game refuses to accept habitable asteroids so I’m having to alter the code.”Sparkplug looked up, “habitable asteroids?”“Yeah, I was talking to Optimus about Hadeen - that’s Cybertron’s star - and he said that there’s this big asteroid about where Mars is in our solar system that has evidence of habitation, like the actual remnants of a colony, so I’m trying to get the game to let me colonise an appropriate asteroid so it can be Botropolis.”“…'Botropolis’?”“…Yeah, Optimus cringed too, but apparently that’s what his babel fish gave him.”Sparkplug smiled at the appropriately geeky nickname for the translation circuits the Autobots used to speak human languages, “I am glad you read so much sci-fi, Chip.”Chip took off his glasses and grinned,  "Me too.“
A few minutes passed with few sounds other than the turning of pages and keystrokes before Sparkplug’s thoughts drifted away from considerations of robots and transhumanism to the teenager before him, "I thought you had class today…”Chip looked sheepish and sunk deeper into the bean-bags, “yeah… I didn’t feel like it…”Sparkplug met his eye and sighed, “your dad called, didn’t he?”Chip hummed glumly. Sparkplug marked his page and put Asimov down beside him, “you don’t mind me calling him 'useless’ do you?”Chip shook his head. Sparkplug gave a solemn nod, “Chip, listen to me here, there’s no reason you have to feel bad about your useless father who thinks running a tech company from three decades in the future is more important than being in your life. You understand, kid?”Chip nodded and visibly perked up.“Good,” Sparkplug gently patted his knee, “have you still got that slightly sketch copy of the Robin Williams film of this?” he asked, waving the anthology.Chip looked confused for a moment, “oh! You mean Bicentennial, yeah, I’ve still got it.”“Do you want to watch it?”“Sure! Can you help me with the set up?”Sparkplug nodded with a parental smile, “Of course kid.”

By popular demand, here hare my essays comparing and contracting “The Decent of Inana” with “Last Stand of the Wreckers,” and Cain and Able to Megatron and Optimus in the Aligned continuity. Hope you all enjoy. They’re both pretty short.
“Last Stand of Inanna”
The Descent of Inanna tells the story of Inanna, her descent into the underworld, being tricked, trapped, and eventually freed. Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers tells the story of a group of Autobots who descend on a captured prison, their struggle, their deaths, and the ultimate outcome. While these stories may seem drastically different at a glance, I found a few comparisons between Ereshkigal the queen of the underworld who trapped Inanna, and Overlord the character who captured the prison, as well as The Wreckers and the beasts who free Inanna, and the Autobots and the god who sent the beasts. I also managed to find similarities between Inanna and the prison itself, Garrus 9. Both stories have an intense role of “good” and “bad” however Last Stand of the Wreckers, in the Transformers style, contains  more ultimate evil and ultimate good themes. The reason for The Wreckers visit and the Beasts visit also differ in their intention, however accomplish a common goal.
While trying to compare these two works I first tried to equate Inanna to the Wreckers themselves, as both parties go alone into dangerous territory. The Wreckers themselves could be a parallel to the artifacts Inanna brings into protect herself with. Like the artifacts, which were removed in the seven gates, at every point of the Wreckers journey a member of the team is either killed or injured beyond repair, making the odds of the last Wrecker standing escape quite low. However, Inanna reminds me more of the Prison the Wreckers infiltrate. This Prison, Garrus 9, like Inanna, is captured and made a “corpse” by Overlord, the cruel death loving protagonist of the Wreckers story, who I compare to The Queen of the Underworld Ereshkigal. It is likely there is a greater reason behind Ereshkigal taking Inanna, but it appears as though she does it simply because she can, and the ultimate enemy of the Underworld is generally set up to be Heaven, where Inanna hails from and is a representative of (The Descent of Inanna). Overlord takes over Garrus 9 for attention, but while he is there he goes on a killing spree for the pure sake of it. (Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers) Making others suffer was literally what he was built for, (Transformers: More than Meets the Eye) and he does it as well as the Queen of the Underworld herself. It takes three years for anyone to be sent to Garrus 9, and in Inanna’s story she tells a servant to send someone after her in three days (The Descent of Inanna). The Wreckers remind me of the beasts in that they are disposable, and hold no greater meaning beyond that of their mission. Not only that, but both are sent by a “holy” figure. In Inanna’s case it is by Enki and in the Wrecker’s case it is by the Autobots, who hold themselves on a pedestal of Righteousness because their leader was assigned by their god, Primus.
The Descent of Inanna and Last Stand of the Wreckers does a good job of blurring the lines between good and evil, while at the same time setting up a character we are meant to root for and one we are meant to root against. The difference, however, is that The Wreckers do have an ultimate bad guy, and in the end he is defeated. Whereas in Inanna, while Ereshkigal loses Inanna, I would not count anything that happens as her being defeated. She is actually quite respected, considering her status. She is still a goddess and is still in high standing, despite what she had done. Overlord, on the other hand, is burned nearly to death in order for anyone to escape Garrus 9, which very few do (Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers). Another major difference between these stories is the intent. The Wreckers, unlike the Beasts, do not descend onto Garrus 9 to rescue anyone or liberate it, they go in to get data that would incriminate the Autobots. The only reason they fight Overlord as all is because defeating him was their only way out. While the intent is different the outcome is the same in both stories. One must stay for another to go. The only way Inanna was able to escape the Underworld was if someone took her place. The only way the Wreckers were able to escape Garrus 9 was if they defeated Overlord. In both cases there is an ultimate need to fulfill the ultimate goal.
The Descent of Inanna and Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers, while aesthetically very different, end up being very similar in the end. It is easy to equate certain characters from one story to certain characters in the other. The series of events I find to be very similar, and even though the intent differs, the ultimate goal becomes the same in the end.
“Brother’s Keeper”
The book of “Genesis” has no lack of siblings and their rivalries. The most notorious among them is the story of Cain and Abel, a pair of brothers whose differences lead one to do unto the other the unthinkable. Killing one’s own brother. The older of the two, Cain, is an example of the human at his worst, while Abel is the example of what can happen to man when human is at his worst. These two brothers share a similar story of another pair of “brothers” in a piece of today’s modern media. The quarrel between the Transformers characters of Megatron and Orion Pax, later known as Optimus Prime, follow in the footsteps of these Biblical examples. One, like Cain, is arrogant, and misunderstanding of God’s way and words. The God in this case, is meant as a literal entity,  as well as a higher power known as The Council. Megaton, like Cain, presents to this higher power an offering. In their ignorance though, the offer is not accepted, and the higher power shows that it is in favor of Abel, or Orion Pax, as opposed to Cain and Megatron. Both instances result in death.
Cain is the brother who “tills the earth.” (Genesis 4:2) Abel is the brother deemed “the keeper of the sheep.” (Genesis 4:2) Cain’s job implies a heavy amount of physical work, while Abel is a watchful eye meant to keep others safe. Abel is portrayed as being slightly more devout than his brother, in the way in which he works to please God. When an offering is called to be taken Abel picks his best lamb while Cain, not wanting to waste his best crop, gives God scraps of the land. Similar to how Cain does more physical work, Megatron works as a Gladiator before becoming a true revolutionary (Transformers Exodus). Orion Pax, on the other hand, watches and files away information as an Archivist, similar to how Abel watches over his herd. Further, the image of the Shepherd is often associated as a holy figure. A shepherd is often used to refer to God’s “deliverer” of the people. This role that Abel plays, along with his willingness and devotion to God, could have been why God favored Abel over Cain. Orion Pax, like Abel, was also favored, and granted an artifact called “The Matrix of Leadership” turning him into Optimus Prime (Transformer Prime 27) In essence he, too, became a shepherd, and it was his voice that was heard over Megatron’s.
It is no secret that brothers are prone to fighting, especially when brothers differ so much it is not surprising at all. Cain was hard and arrogant, believing himself the better of the two and deserving of more. Abel, on the other hand, can be described as “gentle and timid” and “a dreamer of kind and peaceful dreams” (Weisel 41). Orion Pax, being a young and curious soul, can also be described as soft in the way Abel is a lover of life with an unrelenting want to discover and explore. It is the complete opposite of his soon to be friend, Megatronus. While Cain, throughout his story, is not an advocate of violence like Megatron, both are lead to it through jealousy and rage. Unlike Cain Megatron never succeeded in killing his “brother” Orion Pax, but his anger lead to the destruction of many lives nonetheless. Had Cain not fallen to his knees before God and admitted his guilt, the same fate may have befell him. Megatron and his followers, like Cain, were cast out and cursed to wander for the rest of their lives. Though one wandered and found a wife and settled, the other went on fighting for the rest of their life.
Like the story of Cain and Abel the characters of Megatron and Optimus are meant to represent the ultimate “good and evil.” Cain and Megatron being the Ultimate Evil, and Optimus and Abel being the Ultimate good. The fact that I can find parallels between a story about humans written hundreds of years ago, and story about fictional space creatures written in the twenty first century demonstrates that these themes are universal.

Movie Mania: Top 10 of 2018
This one was difficult. Those who have followed this blog for a while will know that for the past two years I have done a top 15 list of favorite films. That is largely because 2016 and 2017 cranked out so many great films, and I could not restrict myself to 10. However, 2018 turned out to be a rather lackluster year for film, in my opinion. Sure, there were some high points, but overall it was disappointing. It was actually easy to stick to a list of 10 this time, and those 10 films are all deserving of praise. I just wish they had some tougher competition to go up against. I digress, though. I now give you my spoiler-free list of favorite films of 2018.
Honorable Mention: Bumblebee
Tumblr media
A collaboration between Travis Knight, the director of Kubo and the Two Strings, and Hailee Steinfeld? Count me in!
I stopped following the Transformers franchise after 2011′s Transformers: Dark of the Moon. One can only endure so many mind-numbing Michael Bay explosions before all of his or her brain cells die out. Here is a fun exercise that one of my college professors taught me; try it next time a Michael Bay Transformers movie comes on. Every time there is a cut, tap a pen or pencil or clap your hands. Frankly, it is quite overwhelming and hard to keep up with, and it is difficult not to notice every single unnecessary, jarring cut after becoming conscious of them through this exercise.
Contrast that with 2018′s Bumblebee. At Knight’s direction, the film forgoes most of those flashy explosions in favor of a more intimate approach to actual character development. Knight wisely chooses to keep the audience grounded and focused on the human characters, namely Steinfeld’s Charlie Watson, a teenage girl who is still struggling to come to terms with the death of her father while harboring resentment of her mother for remarrying. As far as the robots go, while the other Transformers movies went overboard with filling the screen with as many Decepticons and Autobots as they could, Knight really only has the titular Bumblebee and a couple of Decepticons hunting him down, ensuring that the action scenes and the film itself do not feel too bloated. Bumblebee is the course correction that this franchise so desperately needed.
#10: Eighth Grade
Tumblr media
I was cringing throughout the run time of Eighth Grade, but somehow that is a compliment to this film. Uncompromising in its excruciating honesty, Eighth Grade hits the bullseye when it targets the audience’s empathy for an anxious 13-year-old during her last week of eighth grade named Kayla Day, played by Elsie Fisher. As his debut feature film, writer-director Bo Burnham has stated that he drew inspiration from his own struggles with social anxiety, so the script feels genuine and absent of any Hollywood edits. While Kayla is certainly the main focus of the film, Burnham provides a surprisingly touching character arc for her single father, Mark, played by Josh Hamilton. Mark desperately attempts to connect with his teenage daughter, but it seems like all she cares about having a connection with is her phone and social media. With themes of mental health, heavy use of social media, and sexuality, Burnham delivers one of the most uncomfortable scenes I have ever sat through in a movie theater, which is most likely exactly how he intended it to feel.
I cannot help but compare Eighth Grade to 2016′s Edge of Seventeen, another coming-of-age comedy-drama about a teenage girl by a debut director. If I was given the choice between the two films, I would pick Edge of Seventeen, which I believe is much more re-watchable, garnering that intended empathetic response from the audience with half the cringe. Both are brilliant, but those who have not seen Edge of Seventeen should do themselves a favor and give it a watch.
#9: Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
Tumblr media
With so much hate and negativity in the world today, Morgan Neville’s documentary about Fred Rogers is a shining beacon of hope that restores one’s faith in humanity. Using archival footage as well as interviews with those closest to Rogers, Neville paints an intimate portrait of the man who welcomed audiences into his neighborhood through his pioneering television program. Without deifying Rogers, Neville shows how this American treasure dedicated every fiber of his being to teaching children how to be upstanding human beings who care deeply for one another, despite our differences. This documentary proves that Rogers’ lessons were not just for children, though. In fact, Won’t You Be My Neighbor? often feels like a one-on-one session with Rogers, encouraging audience members that they are all capable of good through simple acts of kindness.
#8: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, this American western is sure to fly under most people’s radar because it was a Netflix release that I do not recall having much fanfare and advertising. Written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, this film is an anthology of six different vignettes set in the American West. Sporting a stellar cast with the likes of Liam Neeson, Tim Blake Nelson, James Franco, Zoe Kazan, Brendan Gleeson, and more, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs flexes the Coen’s signature style of dark drama and black humor while impressively tackling all of the sub-genres within the greater Western genre.
Each of the vignettes are tied together by death in some form or fashion. While my ranking of them changes from day to day, my favorite and least favorite remain consistent. It is virtually impossible to not fall in love with the first vignette, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” which is about a cheerful outlaw known just as widely for his singing as his gunslinging. The final vignette featuring a handful of characters cramped together on a stagecoach ride called “The Mortal Remains,” on the other hand, feels somewhat out of place and ends the film with a bit of a dud. Along the way between these two vignettes, however, viewers encounter enchanting tales of a bank robber, an impresario and his artist, a prospector, and a wagon train on the Oregon Trail.
As the Coen’s first film to be shot digitally, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs boasts some impressive cinematography, especially when it comes to wide sweeping shots, like any decent Western should. It also features a wonderfully delightful score that I desperately hope gets an Oscar nod. Not a week has gone by since I have watched this film where I do not find myself humming one of the songs or music from it. The acting throughout the different vignettes of the film is topnotch, and the actors look like they are having a blast in their roles. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a fun time that leaves viewers longing for more time in the American West. For those who cannot find the time to sit down for the whole film, I must urge them to at least watch the first vignette about Buster Scruggs, which is worth the price of admission on its own.
#7: Isle of Dogs
Tumblr media
Set in a dystopian Japan, Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animated Isle of Dogs tells the story of a boy searching for his dog on Trash Island after an outbreak of canine flu. Voiced by an all-star cast including Bryan Cranston, Jeff Goldblum, Scarlett Johansson, and Bill Murray, Isle of Dogs is an epic adventure with its fair share of plot twists along the way. Alexandre Desplat provides a brilliant score for the film that matches Anderson’s comedic quirkiness and thematic choices. I would not consider myself a fan of Anderson’s distinct film style, but I do consider myself a huge fan of dogs and enjoyed Isle of Dogs. (Get the title of the film? Pronounce it out loud quickly. I Love Dogs.)
#6: Game Night
Tumblr media
Game Night made me laugh out loud like I have not done in a long time at the movie theater. Starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, the film follows the hilariously ridiculous premise of a group of friends whose game night gets wrapped up in a criminal escapade. In addition to Bateman and McAdams’ great, fun chemistry as the husband and wife duo of Max and Annie Davis, Jesse Plemons’ portrayal of Gary Kingsbury, Max and Annie’s weird neighbor, delivers some moments of pure laughter. For a film that is high on laughs, Game Night manages to string the audience along with its surprisingly competent mystery, complete with reveals and twists that both shock and amuse viewers. Be sure to stick around for the credits and post-credits.
#5: A Quiet Place
Tumblr media
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a big baby when it comes to horror movies. I absolutely loathe jump scares and will watch horror movies through my fingers if I am forced to watch one. However, I had heard so much positive buzz about John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place that I could not allow myself to make this list without seeing it first, and boy am I glad I summoned the courage to see it. A Quiet Place is a masterclass in tension, tone, pacing, sound design, and character development.
The plot centers around the Abbott family in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by blind monsters that attack any source of sound with their heightened sense of hearing. Nothing is known about the origins of these monsters, only that they have wiped out most human and animal life on Earth. In this hopeless world, Lee and Evelyn Abbott struggle to fill their children with hope for the future.
The performances in A Quiet Place are some of the best of the year. The actors have an added degree of difficulty of having very minimal to no dialogue during the entire film, so their facial expressions and body language have to do most of the talking. One of the more impressive feats of A Quiet Place is the characters communicate in American Sign Language, and the actors actually learned ASL for the film. Millicent Simmonds, who plays Regan Abbott, is deaf and knows ASL, so she was able to help her co-stars with ASL, make corrections, and suggest improvements.
Krasinski has said that A Quiet Place is all about parenthood. Along with this theme, the film contains many Christian images and themes that are fascinating to pick apart and ponder. With so much depth, A Quiet Place delivers an original story that grips audiences. Although I did not see it in theaters, I am sure that people could hear a pen drop in their viewings.
#4: Bohemian Rhapsody
Tumblr media
For all of its inaccuracies, creative liberties, and unevenness, Bohemian Rhapsody took the world by storm as the highest grossing music biopic and reinvigorated a love of Queen and its leading man, Freddie Mercury. Rami Malek runs away with the film as he disappears into his role as Mercury, so much so that audience members might have to pinch themselves to remember that they are not watching the real Freddie Mercury. Seriously, Malek has to be a surefire Oscar contender for this performance. Not only does he masterfully recreate Mercury’s mannerisms and moves onstage, he also channels his pain and feelings of isolation to bring audiences a fully realized depiction of the superstar. The supporting cast is good too, although Malek’s stellar performance does overshadow them, through no fault of their own.
For its finale, Bohemian Rhapsody gifts audiences with one of the most moving, memorable set pieces in all of film for 2018, the 1985 Live Aid concert. In a word, it is epic. Bohemian Rhapsody teaches lessons of acceptance, love, individuality, and the power of music and leaves viewers wishing they could have had a few more years with the amazing Freddie Mercury. This is one of those instances where the majority of critics should be ignored. Even if viewers are new to Queen, they should not miss this film.
#3: Green Book
Tumblr media
Bolstered by fantastic performances by Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, Peter Farrelly’s Green Book takes a relatively unknown true story about a concert tour to the Deep South in the 1960s with African-American pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Ali) and his driver/bodyguard, Italian-American Tony Vallelonga (Mortensen), and tackles its subject matter without being too heavy-handed and maintaining respect for its characters. The script treats Vallelonga and Shirley as real human beings. Contrary to most film tropes, neither completely changes his character after a single event or incident. Instead, that change occurs slowly over the course of their road trip. Both men learn from one another, despite their disparate backgrounds. Mortensen and Ali are both worthy of Oscar nominations, though I think I would give the edge to Mortensen.
For a film about racism, identity, and the dangerous Jim Crow South, Green Book remains accessible to all audiences. It is full of heart and is brimming with that feel-good aura. As Mick LaSalle wrote in The San Francisco Chronicle, Green Book is “so big in its spirit, that the movie acquires a glow. It achieves that glow slowly, but by the middle and certainly by the end, it's there, the sense of something magical happening, on screen and within the audience.”
#2: Annihilation
Tumblr media
I have not stopped thinking about Alex Garland’s Annihilation since it came out way back in February. Garland, the director of one of my favorite films released in 2015 Ex Machina, puts together an impressive cast starring Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac to deliver a truly intoxicating film that leaves audiences deep in thought well after the credits roll. Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s novel of the same name, Annihilation follows a group of scientists who enter a mysterious quarantined area known as the Shimmer. Inside the Shimmer, flora and fauna undergo uncontrollable mutations. The scientists explore the Shimmer in an attempt to learn its secrets and discover what happened to the military team that was sent in before them.
The atmospheric, bone-chilling score sticks in viewers’ memories and adds to the intense tone of the film. Speaking of tone, Annihilation might bring audiences to the verge of suffocation because of how breathtaking it is. It has possibly the scariest, most dreadful scene of any film from this decade that comes from the stuff of nightmares and leaves audiences haunted. For all of its terrifying elements, however, this sci-fi film also showcases some downright gorgeous scenes that let the imagination run wild. Unlike many sci-fi films these days, Annihilation is not afraid to slow down and let scenes marinate in viewers’ minds. With so many avenues to explore as far as themes go, from ethics to grief to depression to humanity’s propensity for its own self-destruction, Annihilation is a film that should be talked about for a long time to come.
#1: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Tumblr media
This was the easiest decision on my whole list. No other film came close to the number one spot after I saw Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I remember seeing trailers for this film throughout 2018, but I did not have high expectations for it and almost blew it off. After all, with all of the Spider-Man films we have had in recent years, how could this one stand out apart from its animation?
The hype is real. Spider-Man is one of the most well-rounded films of 2018. It expertly balances its genuinely funny comedic moments with its emotionally moving dramatic ones. It takes risks that pay off with its bold storytelling, which is full of charm and satisfying superhero action. There is obvious care and attention to detail poured into every frame of this film, a work of art that is a love letter to superhero comic books. The creators of the film wanted it to feel like "you walked inside a comic book," and they hit it out of the park. The computer-generated animation works in concert with line drawings, paintings, dots, and various comic book art styles to make the film look like it was created by hand. It even has word boxes and bubbles that somehow are not too obstructive or distracting. As Todd Howard, the director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, is famous for saying, “all of this just works.”
For such a large ensemble of characters voiced by ingenious choices like Mahershala Ali, Hailee Steinfeld, and Nicolas Cage, Spider-Man gives each of them equal footing while keeping the spotlight squarely on Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), the new Spider-Man. Lily Tomlin voices what may be my favorite version of Aunt May, and many other Spider-Man staple characters make great appearances.
The soundtrack is catchy and fits the bill for what a kid Miles’ age would listen to. There are tons of Easter eggs for hardcore Spider-Man fans to uncover, and there are pop culture winks and nods that most people familiar with the Spider-Man franchise will understand and enjoy. Of course, the late, great Stan Lee has a touching cameo, one of his best yet.
Every part of this stand-alone story feels fresh, and the characters have so much depth to them. It is hard to come up with an original concept that reinvents the superhero genre, but Spider-Man has done just that and more. This revolutionary, culturally important film was a joy to watch, and it may go down as the best Spider-Man film yet. Certainly, it has to be a serious contender for the best film of 2018.
The following are a list of all of the films I saw from 2018, in no particular order:
