the problem with popular live music is that it costs too much actually

We made it to June! May really was a fantastic month for Band Camp Boyfriend between getting the Steam page up end of April and then going viral on TikTok. We were also featured a number of places including VN Game Den last week. I hope every single month can be just as fantastic going forward.

This past week I checked off my list of script edits, added the end screens, and programmed the final voice clips into the game!!! Voice Clip Quarter has reached its end...OR HAS IT? Nope, not quite! It’s time to test the entire game once more. Any little typo can lead it to crash. I also want to make sure no voice clips were missed. So my June goal is to play through the entire game once more. As of today, I am at the end of the common route. I also worked on glossary troubleshooting! And then I passed it off to Alex because she’s the smart sister and SHE GOT IT WORKING (with the help of the wonderful folks at LemmaSoft). I had to do a little overhaul on the programming side of things, and they still need cleaned up a bit size/positioning wise, but no biggie. I’m just really excited it’s no longer bugged! So many huge steps forward we’re making!! 

Alex also programmed in the new bad ending screen. It looks a lot cleaner thanks to our GUI artist, khoaisama, and it’s animated! A moment of silence for the old budget bad ending screen I made in Photoshop.

We knew you so well.

Lately, I’ve felt worn out by all of the extra attention on social media (well, TikTok). It’s a given that when you become more well-known, the requests will come pouring in and the negative comments will start to find you. I even had a dream the other night that I woke up to a slew of negative reviews on the Itch.io page and cried about it lol (in the dream, not real life). It occurred me that we’ve hit the trifecta of mockery--women’s media, dating sims, and marching band. Society loves to pick on all of those things. Ahaha, whoops! 

Doesn’t help we picked the jokey name Band Camp Boyfriend, but hey, it’s catchy and gets the point straight across! However, for every sour comment, there are ten lovely ones. Tumblr, you especially have been so patient and supportive, and I thank you for that. You have no idea how the messages you have taken the time to write keep us going. If I ever feel down, I just think back to all of the love and positivity you’ve given us and I can keep going! So thank you.  HAVE A GREAT REST OF YOUR WEEK! :)

The Canvas Collective are one of our new favorite bands! Specifically with their indie pop and electric single “Say Something”, we can’t help be get lost in the catchy and vibrant qualities of their music. The single is full of energy and upbeat elements that make you want to dance uncontrollably in public. The trio sing about moving forward and growing out of relationships that can be toxic. A lyric that sticks out towards the beginning is “You never really wanted this as bad and it showed when you never showed up”, detailing that feeling of being held back by someone who genuinely doesn’t show up for you. of COURSE I can <3 you’ve probably heard of some of these, but maybe there’ll be some you haven’t! I don’t know what you already like, so… here we go :)

Hozier. Yeah this was always going to be first on the list I’m currently listening to basically nothing else! He’s an Irish folk/soul/blues/etc idk musician who uses a lot of religious and mythological themes in his lyrics and has a lot of songs that include social justice commentary.

The Amazing Devil is a folk rock band with an incredibly unique sound. Their songs are incredibly emotional and have an awesome fantasy vibe going on—plus there’s two singers, and they often sing independently from each other, which is something you don’t see often!

Good Morning Bedlam is a bluegrass band that I’ve gotten into recently! They’re sort of like… a mix of the amazing devil and the crane wives?

The Crane Wives, while we’re at it, and

The Oh Hellos. they’re fairly similar and I don’t have a ton to say about their stylistic differences, but they’re all definitely worth checking out!

Florence & The Machine. Most people have heard of them but I always like to recommend them anyway

Alec Benjamin, if you’re into softer indie music! He has a lot of different styles of lyrics, but his voice is consistent, so he’s great to listen to if you’re looking for that sort of variety.

Chxrlotte doesn’t have a lot of music out, but I’m a big fan of the music she has released, including the ones about Good Omens! The others are more angsty which I love too.

The Family Crest is an orchestral indie pop rock band, which blows my mind. I can’t believe orchestra isn’t a more utilized tool in popular lyrical music, because they do it so well.

Good Kid is actually my brother’s favorite band, and I love them too. They’re also indie rock, but they have a very distinctive style and are easy to get into! Plus they haven’t released a shit ton of songs like some other artists, so it isn’t overwhelming to explore their discography.

Jonatha Brooke is an artist I only know about because my mom liked her music a lot in the 90s, but she’s got a super nice voice and has some awesomely relatable lyrics. I especially recommend her album Ten Cent Wings!

Midlake is a super melodic folk rock band. I’m obsessed with their album The Courage of Others, which has a melancholy vibe that’s super easy to get lost in.

Palaye Royale is harder rock than anyone else on the list so far, but they’ve got an awesome style. Unique voice and definitely darker themes in their lyrics.

Tears for Fears is a pop rock band that I love because my dad does. (My parents are musicians—I trust their music taste).

Toad the Wet Sprocket got their name from Monty Python, but PLEASE go listen to the Architect of the Ruin EP. You will not regret it. Also the song Something’s Always Wrong is like… entrenched in my very being.

Elbow is a band that I never see in fandom circles, but they’re definitely not obscure. Check out their album Little Fictions! They’re kind of like Midlake.

Will Wood ranges from chaotic and fun (The Normal Album) to absolutely soul-crushing (in case I make it)! Sometimes even both at the same time!

(I would’ve also put Paramore, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and other rock/pop punk bands I like on there, but I assumed you already know them.) (If you were looking for harder rock or metal, let me know, because this list is not that.)

So, like a week or two after Eddie got chewed up, Metallica was playing in Indie, right? Eddie was full on complaining about it in the hospital while Steve listened to him. I mean, Eddie was in full on tears because he had saved up money to go, and now, because he's still healing, he can't go. Plus, the town still hates him even though the charges have been dropped. Steve hated to see the tears in his eyes, so he decided to do something about it. He made a call to his mother, whom he knew felt guilty about leaving him alone so often, so she owed him.

It took a couple of days after the concert for it to happen. Eddie was pouting even harder, and he had actually even cried because he had missed the concert. He was still pouting when Steve came in and excitedly told him to prepare himself. Eddie was about to ask him what he meant by that when in strolls. . .James Hetfield? Eddie thought he was having a stroke, but Steve assured him that he was not. The other members of Metallica followed him into the hospital room. James had laughed when Eddie asked politely if he could freak out for a bit which he did.

They told Eddie about how they heard about what happened, how he had been set up for murder, and had been hunted like a dog. They told him how they weren't surprised about that.

"People always assume the worst with people like us," James had said and clapped a hand on his shoulder.

They heard about his band and how Eddie was a really great guitar player. Eddie was still in disbelief that he was talking about his band with fucking Metallica, of all people. When they told him how awesome his band name was, he nearly died on the spot. They presented him with a t shirt, signed photos, and then the last but greatest present of them all. . . A replica of his guitar, the guitar he had tragically lost.

"Hey, do you mind if we fuck this up a bit with our autographs?" James had asked.

"Fuck! No! Go right ahead," Eddie had told him with excitement.

When they had left, much to Eddie's disappointment ("You can't keep them, Eddie,"), Eddie cradled the guitar in his arms like a baby. He even cooed over it. Steve could only watch and thought that, yeah, this was so much better than seeing him cry. Once the guitar had been put away safely and Eddie was resting comfortably, he frowned in confusion.

"I don't understand," Eddie said.

"Uh, understand what?" Steve asked.

"How did they know that I lost my guitar?" Eddie asked.

"Uh, okay," Steve said, blushing. He never thought he would tell Eddie he was the one who pulled the strings, did not think that through. "I may have called my mom because he owed me a huge favor, and she got in contact with Metallica's manager. I also told her about losing the guitar, and I guess she told them. Man, you were just so disappointed that I -,"

Steve had been cut off by Eddie pulling him in for a kiss. He had been so stunned, he didn't have time to react, and by that time, Eddie had pulled away. Eddie opened his mouth, probably to apologize, but Steve swooped in and kissed him. It was a hard, desperate kiss full of so many emotions that neither one of them could comprehend. They eventually broke apart to breathe. Eddie swung his legs over the side of the bed and fully sat up. He wasn't fully healed, but he was close enough to at least do that. Eddie grabbed Steve by his hips and pulled him closer.

"Eddie, what -," Steve started.

"Take off your pants," Eddie told him. "I'm going to fucking thank you, big boy."

“Everyone please welcome Y/B/N to the stage!” you heard bill say, screams drowning out his voice.

You walked out with a huge smile on your face, the screams only getting louder as you stood right next to bill.

It has now been the 3rd performance that you would be doing ever since your manager told you that your band would be going on tour with one of the most popular pop rock (ik they have multiple genres but i had to pick one 😭) band groups of the year.

Although your bands style was more of an indie pop, you were still excited to say the least. You did some research on the band members before going in tour just to know how they are, and from what you saw they looked like awesome people, and you couldnt wait to go on tour with them.

While researching you did develop a small tiny crush on the bands guitarist seeing how good he was at playing, and also incredibly hot. But you did keep that to yourself, not wanting any awkwardness to happen between you two.

When you first met them you instantly became friends with all of them, although your friendship with tom was a bit flirty you didnt mind, you actually enjoyed every second of it.

“Hello everyone!” You said, smiling. “My band, Y/B/N and Tokio hotel have made a song for you guys, so here it is!” you said, gripping onto your mic a little tighter, as you got more nervous.

You backed up a bit as bill started to sing, Although you have already performed two times you still got a bit nervous as you’ve never had a big crowd like this one.

Sure you had lots of fans but combined with Tokio Hotels fans was crazy, but you just looked at tom, as he gave you a smile making you feel a bit less nervous.

Your turn was starting to come up so you walked up a bit closer to bill, starting to sing along with him.

You both smiled while singing, facing away from bill leaning on him as he leaned on you.

The nerves you felt were long gone by now as you were having fun, every little chance that you got, you looked at tom, even giving him a small wink.

You continued to sing until you and bill let out a scream, ending the song. (Ig think abt how schrei kinds ends, omg i love bills voice in that AHH)

There was screaming as you looked at your band members giggling and giving everyone a hug, once you reached tom he took you in with a smirk on his face, giving you a small peck on your cheek.

Once you got off of the stage you were blushing non stop, your band members even teasing you, calling you a tomato.

Once you were back in your own personal space, wiping off your makeup, you heard a small knock on the door.

“Come in!” You said, continuing to wipe your makeup off, then setting it down, turning to look at who was there.

“Oh! Tom.. hey!” You said, blushing. He noticed you were and walked over to you, putting his arms around your waist.

“You did amazing out there.” He said, placing a small kiss on your neck.

You laughed nervously, and whispered a small thank you.

You felt him smirk against your skin, causing you to bite your lip. You grabbed his chin, lifting it up to face you as you attached your lips onto his quickly without even thinking about it.

He moved his hands further down your waist, moving them closer to your lower back. The kids getting deeper and deeper until you were interrupted by a loud knock on the door.

“Alright you two, lets hurry up in there so we can all get dinner!” You heard from behind the door.

You blushed and placed your hands on toms shoulders, “maybe we should continue this later..” you said, letting out a small giggle.

He chuckled and nodded, removing his arms from your waist, “ill see you in a bit.” He said, winking at you and walking out.

You giggled and let out a deep sigh once the door closed, you sat down and started blushing like crazy thinking about the kiss.

Sure you have only known tom for about more than two months but you were falling for him, and the kiss was only making it worse..

The actor who plays Ringo is a part time musician. He has his own Indie band and he is actually the lead guitarist. He brings his guitar to write songs during downtime. When his fans saw his role in the show they freaked out not seeing his hands. Mikio's actor has taken this role to move away from his image as a stereotypical Hollywood leading man. It's his first venture into playing a very unlikeable character. Abijah Fowler's star is actually one of the nicest and most professional actors on set! He brings baked goods and sweets for the cast and crew on hectic days with long shoots. Sometimes he even orders catering for them! Akemi's actress is in her first big role! She used to have minor parts in soap operas. She's excited for her big debut! The actor who played Ise actually read for the Akemi role too. Madam Kaji and Lady Ito initially read for the others' part. The casting director made them switch because they felt the other actress suited their respective roles better.

Casting for Taigen took forever as none of the dozens who auditioned was convincing enough for the role. The actor they finally cast was a last minute find when he dropped out of a sci-fi series. After wrapping up season 1, word has it that the actors playing Mizu and Taigen actually became a couple

This project was such a blast! It's been an awesome collaboration with Grey, and on such a unique fic too! As soon as I saw 'Hannah Montana AU' I was SOLD! Say less, identity porn is the jam!

The articles Grey included at the beginning of each chapter were perfect design elements to play with. I had a lot of fun recreating the Tiger Pop articles (an in-universe dupe of Tiger Beat). I got to play with bright colors and a LOT of fonts - like a LOT a lot, with a lot of research that went into the article recreations (there's Tiger Pop, newspaper articles, and a Punk magazine), as well as the Hannah Montana fonts on the cover.

I also made a cassette tape for the fic! Each chapter is titled after a different Hannah Montana song; I chose to make a cassette tape in keeping with both the 80's roots of the source material (though the fic is set in present day), as well as the physical nature of the fanbinding. I liked the idea of a tactile listening/reading experience; plus, cassettes are on the rise again, and many current artists are releasing new albums on cassette!

Awesome: This Indie Band Started Hanging Around Session Musicians 20 Years Their Senior and All Their Music Got Really Boring

Soo it’s 5 am and I have some miscellaneous thoughts on brendon ending panic! 

Panic has been a shambling corpse since like 2014

I’m glad that brendon isn’t gonna be walking around wearing the shield of Ryan’s teenage accomplishments.

I have trouble defining panic at the disco!, I feel like a lot of people do. Obviously Fever and pretty. Odd are “true panic!” and here are my opinions on the other albums

to get it out of the way, I consider vices and virtues “real panic!” Primarily because a lot of it was made by dallon weekes. I hear so much dallon in v&v, to me at least he has such a particular style. It leans so heavy into that 1920s orchestral baroque pop rock.

listening to a lot of the brobecks you can kind of tell what he brought to v&v cause it’s present in his other music. Think of a track like visitation of the ghost. It just reminds me quite a bit of ballad of Mona Lisa. Old timey feeling Haunting intro with soft spoken verses and explosive choruses.

I also think it’s important to acknowledge the way that dallon was treated during his time in panic! And that many ideas and songs were stolen and changed by brendon even in later albums so, keep that in mind.

I still think that v&v is an awesome mind child from one artist I really love and one I at least used to love. I suggest that anyone that likes v&v check out dallons other work. if you wanna get into a band that isn’t like from the 2000s but still has that nostalgic dallon weekes feel absolutely listen to IDKHOW. And if you want a indie feeling vices and virtues, go listen to violent things.

After v&v is where things get fuzzy. My opinion on too weird to live too rare to die is positive. I used to dislike/not listen to this album until pretty recently, But this comes back around to the stealing thing. The song that originally changed my opinion on TWTLTRTD was far too young to die. as some may know, that’s dallons song and you could and should go listen to his demo, it’s so good. songs like girls/girls/boys and all the boys(not on the album) we’re also taken and changed from dallon in some form.

So yeah, obviously they’re good songs, brendon didn’t really make them, which is something I find I say over and over again when talking about panic!

As for death of a bachelor. It’s definitely not a bad album. it was one of my favorites in my tweens. But looking back on it, it’s very… brendon. I believe that at some point brendon himself made decent/good music. And that point is death of a bachelor. It’s him. It sounds like a solo project it sounds like just his musical influence, and it’s good. Not amazing. But they’re good songs. Maybe I’ve just listened to them so so so many times but they’re not all that remarkable anymore.

Now into the decline. When pray for the wicked came Out embarrassingly enough i really liked it. I was 14. Listening to it now I think it’s alright. Very mediocre album, a far cry from real panic!

I do think it has some interesting sounds like, i don’t mind the intro to roaring 20s. And old fashioned isn’t bad, but it sounds like a Taylor swift song, I swear. Just imagine her vocals instead. Which isn’t a bad thing I love Taylor but it’s definitely not panic!

An important note about pray for the wicked is the start of Brendon’s vocal deterioration. From what I’ve heard brendon doesn’t take care of his voice, he’s also a smoker which definitely doesn’t help. This takes us right into…. Viva las vengeance.

I’ll save you the savage take down of this album that has already been torn to shreds. It’s just bad. It’s so insanely bad. It not just bad, it’s lifeless. Like a dead wet fish being smacked against the ground. His voice bothers me like nothing else.

Brendon was always praised for his voice, and specifically, his high notes. And if you know the guy, you know he loves attention. So he kept busting out high notes, kept throwing them in live during songs that didn’t call for them. At first it was cool, I remember being so impressed with his dream on cover.

But it’s just not cool anymore. He seems to have damaged his voice into locking in a high register. He almost never uses his lower register anymore.

I don’t have to spell out why that is so unfortunate. being all high notes isn’t impressive or healthy . It’s only cool when it’s special. I remember how people used to talk about victorious and how vocally impressive it was. Now it’s all he can do.

The actual music in viva las vengeance is bad too. I don’t know a lot of music theory but I do know it just sounds hollow. Middle of a breakup sounds like generic kids YouTube Chanel backing track and don’t let the lights go out is just empty and off putting.

And. Local. God.

At first, The fact that he even opened his mouth about Ryan after all these years felt confusing and infuriating. Its hard to even explain what brendon is trying to do. It’s not a diss track. But taking a second to relax and actually listen, It seems like a lament? a lament of a time long Gone. To me he maybe is thinking back on what he could have done differently. Should he have been like Ryan? Should he have let the music speak for itself instead of selling out and single-handedly running this once great band into a wall. I hear so much regret in the way he takes about ryan. I can tell he still admires him.

My final opinion is, As bad as the song is, it’s still closure to me. He finally actually made a song about how he feels about Ryan Ross and early panic. It’s almost validating to know he really has been holding onto this for so many years. it wasn’t just us looking way too into things. We all had a feeling he still thought about early panic even when he denied it. A lot of the things that felt like they were about Ryan probably were. So excuse me while I high five my younger self.

All in all, I’m glad panic can finally die. As someone who’s been invested in this band and the fraught relationship between these two men for the better half of my life, the circle feels completed. Ryan said his piece with lonely moonlight, brendon with local god. Ryan got what he wanted, to never sell out even if it means fading away. And brendon rode his superstardom straight into the ground. It all makes sense. I feel like I can lay it all to rest.

To me, The life and death of panic! at the disco is a tale of creative integrity, and just what it means to be a real musician. This band birthed the yin and Yang of selling out. The shining example of someone who refused to let his music be warped and hollowed by fame. And someone who only knows how to take and change for the sake of it.

The band is gone, The legacy lives on only through us now. Thanks for reading this long ass post. Stay real out there panic! Fans.
