BATMAN KNIGHTFALL TP NEW EDITION VOL 01 • cover art • Mike Deodato Jr. [Apr 2012]
In the first installment of this classic storyline, the Dark Knight's greatest enemies have all simultaneously escaped from Arkham Asylum and are preying on Gotham City. With his city under siege, Batman pushes his body to the limit as he takes on The Joker, the Mad Hatter, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, The Riddler and the Scarecrow. But things get much worse when Bane, the man behind all the madness, confronts an exhausted Batman - and breaks his back. This massive first KNIGHTFALL volume collects BATMAN: VENGEANCE OF BANE SPECIAL #1, BATMAN #491-500, DETECTIVE COMICS #659-660, SHOWCASE '93 #7 and 8 and BATMAN: SHADOW OF THE BAT #17-18, including chapters never previously reprinted.

batman: vengeance of bane #1 (1993)
i remembered seeing bane's upbringing come up a lot in comics & secondary sources in the form of offhanded mentions that he grew up as a political prisoner, but i had no idea his origin had actually been told in this much detail several months before the knightfall arc properly started!
i don't want to focus on this overmuch because "bad politics in a batman comic? full story at 11," but now that i'm generally aware of dixon's awful politics, i do find myself noticing a lot of awkward shit in his comics that i breezed past when i read them as a kid. there's all kinds of casual racism in this one, specifically, but for a comic written in the 90s by a self-described conservative, it probably could've been a lot worse.
and this is also just a genuinely great villain introduction. ending it with bane's brief, menacing encounter with batman was an especially strong choice. i don't know if they already had knightfall in mind when they wrote this, or if that was something that was developed later, but either way the seeds are definitely planted here.
