as a canadian piano girlie seeing "rcm" everywhere in disco elysium was so jarring shakjdlfha
#my rambles#'royal conservatory of mu- no wait wrong one'#disco elysium#piano#it's fitting tho bc both suck 👍#reprinting your entire syllabus every 7 years with minimal changes just so all your music teachers have to buy the new ones?#same with theory too except it's worse bc they actually need to buy those#sucha scam#sec lemme actually google the 2022 syllabus changes to make sure I'm not talking out of my backside#wtf river flows in you used to be level 9?#it's level 8 now but even then ????#thing is literally so easy#now I have a long history of overestimating how easy a piece is#(my brother's learning piano recently and I have learnt that my idea of a beginner pianist is like. at least 3 levels above that :skull)#but like#that piece is so simple?? one melody line one left hand line little to no chords on either#I'd've thought it'd be level 7 max#now it may not take higher than that for someone to play it *well*#I don't particularly like the piece but it does need to play with a certain lightness to sound good#and you might not know how to shape it well in level 7#but like on a pure technique level#level 7 max I'd've thought#wait post maybe cancelled a piece I thought I played for level 7 was actually level 8#ehhh but that's a fugal piece it looks simple but ends up being harder#idk is there anything that I'm missing that makes river flows in you that much harder than I realise?#do level 7 pianists not have as good a sense for where their hands are without looking?#what'm I missing#anyway yea checked the diff between the 2015 syllabus and the 2022 one and... yea seems scammy#there's some I feel like will be good changes but those don't seem to warrant a whole new syllabus and reprints of everything yk

One side effect of studying piano pedagogy is that whenever I watch a show or movie or video where someone is sitting at the piano and they're supposed to be a relatively experienced musician, I am obligated to be insufferable about their hand and body position. Girl, how are you going to get the range of motion to play octave chords fortissimo when your elbows are glued to the side of your ribs. It's your knees that are supposed to be just under the edge of the keyboard, not your bench. Those fingers are just too flat for the scale passages that the soundtrack says you're playing. Is that a slouch-

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. People need to become more comfortable with making bad art, and people need to be more comfortable with accepting that their art isn’t good. I’m sorry, but sometimes art looks objectively bad (at least as far as the artist is unable to conceive of their artistic vision), and instead of constantly handwaving negativity and brushing critical feelings under the rug people need to develop skills to cope with and progress from those feelings. The VAST majority of art ‘advice’ I see pass across my dash is really just art positivity, where the takeaway isn’t any valuable information, but rather an admonishment for not being kind enough to themselves and corrections you can make to your behavior. It sidesteps the problem ‘I am unfamiliar with art’ and jumps right to addressing the symptom ‘I feel bad I’m unable to create what I want to create’. Instead of working to improve artistic skill and familiarity with creative tools, it tells the reader that they need to work to re-think their conception of artistic quality. There should be space for both of those conversations but they don’t exist to the exclusion of the other. Most art spaces online attempt to create an encouraging space through enforcement of post-over rules and discouraging critical feedback, but inadvertently creates incentives for people to write insubstantial filler so they can post their own work which discourages people who’s art isn’t as impressive or noteworthy because all of their feedback is platitudes. Art communities are consumed by a fear of alienating beginners, but falsely believe that beginners will be alienated by critical feedback and don’t realize that most beginners feel alienated by stagnation and uncertainty. Feeling bad at a skill feels much better than feeling as if you are incapable of improving at that skill, and the shallow insistence of magical thought as a substitute for practice is a self fulfilling prophecy which will make it so.

for the musician au, you said stanley likes playing debussy, but what's his favorite suite? or just a favorite piece
also what's the narrator's favorite piece to listen to him play?
The suite bergamasque would be his favourite I think! It really depends on his mood for which one he's liking to play more that time, but usually it's Passepied and Menuet (To impress, though, he plays Clair de Lune)
And Narrator loves listening to him play Sinatra. More specifically, Fly me to the Moon. Stanley puts a special spin to it that makes his heart beat faster

39 and 55 for Tav/Astarion? OH AND I LOVE WANT IT ALL, YOUR WRITING IS IMPECCABLE ‼️<3
Tumblr media
Prompt(s): leaning into the other’s side + tracing the lines on the other’s hand
Astarion x AsexaulBard!Tav Masterlist
Tumblr media
There really was nothing like being pleasantly tipsy while in good company. Your party was in good spirits, the night was warm and, for once, danger was something that happened to other people.
Eventually everyone had shuffled off to bed, leaving you and Astarion leaning against each other as the fire crackled on.  Your thoughts floated in front of you, swimming lazily in the air. Everything was just so lovely, especially the other hand in yours.  You couldn’t help but run your fingers across the lines, smiling as you made a study of every angle.
“See something you like,” Astarion asked, amused.  He was decidedly more sober than you and appeared content to stay that way.
You nodded idly. “You have beautiful hands. I bet you’d make a wonderful pianist.”
He gave a low laugh, shaking you slightly with the effort.
“What?”
“Oh nothing,” he said, grinning. “You just might be the only person I know who could study a man’s hands and think only of their musical capabilities.”
You stared confused, before a sinking rush of embarrassment flooded your stomach.
“Oh.”
He laughed again, turning just enough to kiss your temple. “Just teasing darling. Although I do love that color on your cheeks.”
“Serves me right for trying to give you a compliment,” you said, pouting.
“Oh don’t be like that. I relish them all.”
You huffed in childish annoyance, which only seemed to humor him. He then raised your entwined hands to the firelight, narrowing his gaze as if to examine them himself.
“Do you think I’d actually be good?” he asked as a peace offering.
You let out a sigh. There really was no use trying to stay annoyed with him.
“Capability is there,” you allowed, “provided you have a very, very patient teacher.”
“Are you offering?”
You raised an eyebrow. “Don’t tell me you’re interested.”
“Depends if you’re offering,” he repeated, with a sly smile.
You didn’t answer right away, scrunching your face in exaggerated thought.
“Maybe not piano,” you concluded. “There’s only so far the blind can lead the blind.”
He nodded in understanding. “How about the violin?”
Again, you considered before shaking your head. “Too difficult for a beginner. Lute isn’t bad though.”
He gave a dismissive scoff. “Overdone. The lyre, perhaps?”
“Bit on the nose don’t you think?”
His brows furrowed, his lips pursing in consideration. “A lyre and a player…Yes, I suppose you’re right. The jokes just write themselves. Flute?”
You shrugged. “Never learned actually.”
“Really?” he said, sounding genuinely surprised. “Pan pipes.”
“No.”
“Horns?”
“No to all wind instruments. I think it comes down to mechanics. I never saw the appeal of having to put my lips together and blow.”
You glanced up at Astarion, keen to watch his reaction.
He stared at you for a long second, a look of utter confusion on his face. His eyes then widened as a loud laugh barked from his lips.
You broke that same instant, dissolving into giggles.
“I can’t believe you said that,” he said, trying and failing to get a hold of himself. “Gods that was awful!”
“But effective,” you pointed out, grinning.
He gave another short laugh before shaking his head. “What have I gotten myself into with you?”
“Having regrets?”A wicked smirk flashed across his face. “Far from it, darling.” He then leaned in close, his eyes alight with conspiracy and mirth. “I think you and I are going to have a lot of fun together.”

pianist!sukuna...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pianist!sukuna, who is a young and renowned genius that wields endless artistic liberty - never failing to receive a standing ovation from his audience. with his slicked back hair,  and his expensive formal suit that has not a single crease on it; he is the desire of many.
pianist!sukuna is always incisive and strict with himself and with others, building a reputation for being a person not to be carelessly touched; unapproachable.
pianist!sukuna, whose pieces are always chaotic and fierce, resembling an uproar in a battlefield.
pianist!sukuna’s pieces are all perfect, but by all means, they are not without emotion. passion, sometimes anger, and joy. you can really tell he enjoys playing under the spotlight. his music sheets reveal his otherworldly cockiness, almost daring anyone to try and copy the way he works the keys on the piano.
pianist!sukuna, who deems his life perfect and complete in every aspect - he doesn't need anything more than what he has now. but of course, like any cliche love story, all of that topples over when you walk into his life.
an amateur pianist. a newcomer, to this occupation. you were about to go onto your debut concert, when you collided into this man in the hall. he’s obviously annoyed, but is unable to lash out at someone who already looks like they’re about to puke, with terrified eyes.
you run up to stage after apologising profusely, leaving him in the dust. of course, this sadistic man is interested in the kinds of mistakes you’ll make in what seems to be your first official performance, so he makes his way to the audience seats to observe.
there, he sees your same anxious face, stumbling towards the piano in the middle. he’s looking forward to how you’re gonna embarrass yourself in front of the hundreds of people that stare at you, while you settle yourself down before the grand instrument.
he is absolutely taken by surprise however, when your playing begins. it’s as if your nervousness, anxiety, was all an act. your fingers fly across the keys effortlessly, despite the prominent worry you have in your eyes.
when you finish up, sukuna is dearly impressed. not a single mistake was made, and even though maybe some other aspects of your playing could be improved, your future as a pianist is bright, even in sukuna’s eyes.
he greets you with a few slow claps as you make your way towards the steps of the stage.
“not bad at all. still a shame, though. witnessing you embarrass yourself would’ve served equally as great entertainment.”
“excuse me? what are you talki-”
maybe because your legs lost strength after you were relieved of the tension, you missed a step while going down the stairs and you topple forward, heading straight for a faceplant.
sukuna catches you - or, moreso acted like an invincible wall that prevented you from falling face first.
“what a pitiful thing, acting like a newborn deer. is it your hobby to ram into strangers like this?” your cheek is pressed against his chest, but you’re only worrying about how your make up will smear onto his shirt.
“sorry!” you exclaim, pulling yourself out of his arms as fast as you’d fallen in. he seems kind of bothered that his snide remarks aren’t registering into that little brain of yours.
“i’ve been meaning to ask... who exactly are you...?”
“forget it,” he sighs, waving you off. “do you even know who i am?”
it was supposed to be more of a rhetorical question, because he definitely believed that someone like you would know of someone like him.
it takes him a second to understand your question. there’s no way... there’s no way...
“you- you don’t know me?”
you blink innocently at him and shake your head. the world closes in on him as he furrows his brows. someone like you?? a beginner??? has no idea who he is???? while sukuna starts pondering whether his feats in the musical industry weren’t enough, you awkwardly side-step away from him.
“uh, well. i have someone i need to see so if you’ll excuse me...”
you slip through his fingers and scamper away, leaving him in the dust again.
the rest is in bullet points bc im lazy
sukuna: 0
you: 1
oh, the embarrassment! the humiliation! you’ll pay for this.
he literally loses sleep over it, smh dramatic man
he plans a revenge... what better way to shove his superiority in your face than to make you work with him, face to face?
a collaboration, it is. it’ll be sure to draw in a lot of attention too, a refined musician like him reaching out to an ignorant novice like you.
it starts off with him bullying you mildly until he eventually discovers that he is attracted to you, like every romance
the whole time, you didnt even realise he was trying to bully you...
being dense asf, whenever he brought up his harsh, spiteful remarks, you thought he was just trying to give you constructive criticism
you improved your playing a lot while working with him and even introduced new perspectives to sukuna about the piano
you: *plays something for him*
sukuna: that was horseshit
you: sorry, i’ll do better!
sukuna: 😐🧍‍♂️(why arent you upset)
the point where he went “shit, im in love” was probably when you excitedly grinned at him after finishing a piece perfectly by following his advice
so then his revenge story turns into a love story
the collab turns out really well, yours and his playing styles harmonising to create an interesting piano album
when he starts pursuing you romantically, it takes a while bc he uses roundabout ways to tell you that he wants you and you’re... well, you’re dumb
“you’re always like this. making me chase you around... tch.”
as for the first kiss, he quite literally demanded it like
“let me kiss you.” sukuna says, pushing you closer to him with an arm wrapped around your waist. you slow blink at him, but you tell him “...okay.” and shut your eyes
and then when he takes you to his bed for the first time, he reveals to you the tattoos he has on his bodyy ;) you stare in awe
"You didn't take me for a conservative man, did you?" He asks with a smirk. "Admire them as you please."
oh and one extra; you convince him to upload a clip of you and him playing ‘heart and soul’ together onto his instagram, how cute would that be
notes; please listen to Liszt - Un Sospiro - this was the piece that i had fallen in love with while trying to immerse myself with some piano music during the creation of this haha <3<3

sometimes I get really excited about good piano playing and I just have to remind myself my references for piano skill are: me (arct pianist), my piano teacher (concert pianist playing concertos as soloist with professional orchestras), people who I have recently played in competitions with (arct pianists), seong-jin cho (world class pianist), andras schiff (andras schiff), david barenboim (david barenboim). I am. incredibly unobjective on piano skill

Teddison and Oliver in:
The Phantom of the Opera
AU/Spinoff idea for Ted and Oliver
Roles
Oliver as Erik (Phantom of the Opera)
Ted as Christine (Called Teddison in the AU)
Tumblr media
Story
For clarification, I am not try to follow the story of The Phantom of the Opera by every detail. There are many similarities, but this is my own OC adaptation of it.
The story follows Teddison as he gets sent away by his father to study and become a renowned pianist. Teddison’s family line has been filled with famous musicians throughout time, and Teddison seems to be the only one who sucks absolute ass at it, being only halfway decent at the piano.
Teddison’s father sends him to multiple destinations, one of them being a historical monument, an opera where the death of a child prodigy pianist died from a falling chandelier accident.
On the tour, Teddison hears the beautiful, melodic and sad playing of a piano in the alcoves below the opera. No one else in the tour group seems to hear it but him. Straying away from the group; Teddison finds Oliver, playing alone in the alcoves.
Oliver isn’t a deformed man like the original tPotO, he is an actual ghost who haunts the ground below his death site. Having no one else to talk to and with Teddison being a beginner pianist himself, Oliver takes Teddison on as his protégé and eventually ends up falling in love with the boy.
Oliver does have deformity, but it is the result of the way he died and how the fatal blow stayed with his soul in its external form.

idea that will go nowhere:
Adrien, at one point, started a YouTube Channel to post videos of him playing piano and giving beginner lessons on playing piano and jazz theory. He makes sure to not show who he is, since he's technically not allowed to have social media accounts that aren't brand related, but moreso because he wants people to recognize him for his skill and not just his face and name. The channel is named MeloniousThonk, after jazz pianist and one of his personal favorites Thelonious Monk (though Fats Waller is undisputably the best jazz pianist of all time, his name did not work as well).
He dresses up in his cute little suits and button-up shirts, goes on long-winded tangents about the rich history of modern music (often all while still playing, no less), and always waves to the camera even though it's positioned to look mostly at the piano keyboard and his hands.
....okay now for the wissym evil part: After some time, he deletes his channel entirely. As nice as it is to be anonymous, commenters on the internet quickly come to the conclusion that this 15 year old boy is, in fact, a butch woman, and soon all his videos are filled with comments about his feminine hands and manner of speaking. As the 2005 internet tended to be, most were pretty disgusting and sexist.
But he still keeps the old videos tucked away on his computer, along with the few positive comments he got. Watching through them late at night, he'll think about the off chance that someone recognizes him as an old piano YouTuber they used to watch, rather than for what most people tend to see him as.
