Les Rhoam
[Sing to the tune of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables. Warning: foul language.]
There was a time when I was mean They had gossiped too much And their words got to me I yelled at Zelda on a bridge Link looked at me sidelong And since I am confessing... I was a dick.
Then it all went wrong...
I fucked things up in times gone by When I was king and still was living. I fucked things up and then I died I fucked ten-thousand-year-old planning The prophecy caused me to stray The guardians were excavated Maybe I needed to get laid Or maybe zooted or just wasted.
But instead I wasted time Micromanaging my daughter And her short appointed knight And politicized her prayers I made her talk to great big stones Made her get pruny in cold water Fucked up her childhood and her home With reprimands and travel plans.
So now I haunt the great plateau Where I just set apples on fire I'll teach Link how to use his scope And be a meat and seafood frier.
I fucked things up and now I'm dead And flaming, floating, and bemoaning The total douchebag I had been Once Link glides off, I'll fucking leave.

Palworld Experience Thus Far:
- Died via getting my shit wrecked by a Deer
- Got attacked by 5 "Depressos"
- Saved an off brand Clodsire and watched as he danced around in his little hot tub.
- Rode on the back of a Not-Lycanroc
- Found the neatest hybrid of Goodra and Meganium
- Got attacked by Not-PETA
- Started building a bed. 4 Sheep helped with their tiny little hammers

A long, long time ago I can still remember how the princess used to think me vile And I knew that if I had my chance I could change her gloomy stance and maybe we'd be happy for a while But Guardians made me shiver with each laser they'd deliver monster's on our doorstep I couldn't take one more step I can't remember if I cried when I learned of my Zora Bride But something touched me deep inside the day, The Champion's Died So Bye, Bye, Calamity Guy Shot a Canon at the Ganon and His health-bar was fried and the princess awoke the power inside singin' The demon will not be revived the demon will not be revived

BOTW's story is kinda weak because it sucks at information distribution, but I think it did a great job incorporating the gameplay into the narrative. Breath of the Wild is an open world game, meaning the onus is naturally on exploration and freedom. By contrasting this main gameplay loop with the memory flashbacks and given information of the past, it manages very naturally create a narrative of past vs present and restriction vs freedom.
Almost everything we see of the past in BOTW creates this stifling feeling of repression. It is a past filled with restriction, where everyone is given a very narrow role to play and punished when they do not play it well enough. Everyone is always prim and proper, anchored by tradition and the 'right' way to do this.
By contrast, in the present, if you want to spend a whole day trying to make your way through Hebra in your underwear, you can just do that. Sure, you can also just beeline for the Divine Beasts and then the castle, but few people (speedrunners not withstanding) will do that, and moreover, people aren't supposed to do that. Breath of the Wild wants you to spend your time fucking around rather than completing your divinely ordained world-saving quest.
This creates a contrast between past and present, where Link and Zelda are pushed into restrictive roles by precisely this destiny. Link is still mostly a vehicle of projection for the player, but is nevertheless established as a character in his own right in the game, and what limited notes of characterization we get indicates that he was absolutely miserable in the past. In memory cutscenes he's stoic and unemotive (probably part deliberate characterization, part effort to preserve his status as a blank slate), and Zelda's diary establishes him as not talking because he's afraid of saying the wrong thing. Whichever way you read his character, he's clearly very repressed.
And in the present he's spending a whole day seeing if he can get a picture of a bug, or eating dubious food, or chasing ducks or whatever. Because that's what you're doing. And since you're probably having a great time, you're gonna project that on the character designed to be projected upon. While I do still think past!Link could have done with a little more emoting, the game overall does a good job utilizing Link's status as a player insert to create/add to the story and its themes.
BOTW's chosen story is one set in the past, mostly about Zelda and her failure to fit into the role she's given. It's a story of restriction and repression. It is a deliberate contrast between the freedom the gameplay gives you. With this, it does a great job incorporating the gameplay into the story; rather than a game where every second you spend screwing around and exploring feels at odds with the urgency of your quest, the fact that Link, the repressed and miserable knight of the past, is screwing around freely feels like character development. Now having the freedom to screw around rather than single-mindedly pursue destiny is the point of the story.
In addition, it adds to the game's overarching theme of past vs present. In the flashbacks, we see an overreliance on Sheikah tech and ancient plans, hailed blindly as a savior when we know exactly this will be everyone's doom. Breath of the Wild never posits that we should ignore or scorn the past; on the contrary, it encourages exploration of it, both in the past with Zelda's character via her fascination with Sheikah tech, and in the present, with encouragement to uncover Link's past and the gameplay's incorporation of Sheikah tech. However, it cautions against worshipping it. The past is something to uncover and honor, but not a thing to live in; ultimately, you must forge your own path in the present. This is reinforced through the freedom of the gameplay and the aforementioned contrast it creates between the past and present. Following the past brought doom upon Hyrule a hundred years ago; doing so again would surely repeat this. You are encouraged to ignore the blueprint of the past and forge your own path. Even and especially if it involves riding your horse everywhere but the plot points.
By the very nature of the game's design, you are creating a story where Link wakes up in a wild future filled with endless possibilities and obtains a freedom that was inherently restricted in the past, letting go of the past and celebrating the future.
It's not groundbreaking or revolutionary or anything, but I think it's a very solid example of incorporating gameplay into the narrative.

Zelda, Princess of Hyrule ~ (The Legend of Zelda series) A reworking of a portrait of Alexandra of Denmark, Princess of Wales by Franz Xaver Winterhalter from 1864. Princess Zelda, sweet sweet Zelda. I was really proud of this portrait when I made it. Even though my happiness with it has waned in the years since I created this, I’m still flattered deeply by how much people like it. It was an early go at the whole classical portrait thing, and - like Midna - Princess Zelda is a character I would like to have a 2nd attempt at with improved skills and tools. My favourite story about this piece is that in 2019, Patricia Summersett (VOA for Zelda in Breath of the Wild) attended Auckland Armageddon where I was selling prints of my art for the first time. A supporter of mine took a print to her & the reaction was amazing. She loved it. I was so flattered. One day, I’ll do another Princess Zelda. But for now, this hangs in the halls of Hyrule Castle (at least in my mind)! + HQ art prints through my Etsy shop + More info & art in my DeviantArt gallery

I'm here to take part in @linktober once again, baby😎 This time, I decided to make the entries in digital because digital drawings are easier to edit than traditional. Plus, they look much more colorful.
So, my first entry is based on the YouTube video of BotW Zelda yelling at Sponge Bob merchants. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find this video because I don't remember its exact name, so I can't include it in this post. But I can show you the original frame so you can understand what I’m talking about and maybe even help me find that video.

Les Link
[Sung to the tune of "What Have I Done?" from Les Miserables.]
What have I done? Sweet Hylia, what have I done? Become a kingdomless knight Who kills bokoblins for fun? Have I broken my torch My club, my spear, sword and branch, So nothing remains but this woodcutter's axe?! This old, clunky axe that nobody fears I hear them laugh with my long Hylian ears!
If there's another way to go I missed it a hundred long years ago My life was a war that could never be won I pulled out a sword and became a champion But they soaked me in blue stuff once dead For so long that it made me forget!
Yet why did I allow that voice To make me open up my eyes? She said I was the light of Hyrule She gave me a slate She called me Link, too She claims I have to kill the beast Am I crazy? I'm hearing voices in my head And seeing tiny talking trees.
I will drop rocks in holes I will lift every stone Dive in lily-pad circles To find more turds of gold!
There's an old man who's watching me He's somehow much faster than me His paraglider'd give me freedom I feel these purple balls inside my chest They came from mummies deep in shrines With forehead-eyes Their spirit orbs can give me life Or they can be the old man's bribe...
I would go now, but I'd fall Off the edge of the plateau And then what would be the point Of my hundred-year repose? Maybe I should fight this lynel It has a real nice bow I WILL KILL YOU WITH MY AXE AH HA! TAKE THAT, YOU MONSTE- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
----------
[Game Over]
[Note: This is what happens when I'm looking through my screenshots for something and I find Link making one of his funny eating faces. This one so looked like the beginning of a soliloquy to me.]

I was watching a video analysing how the Yiga clan were handled in botw and how the person analysing it lamented the fact that Kohga was a joke character who totally destroyed the much more threatening image the yiga clan had all throughout the game. Although I do understand the sentiment (I felt that way for a long time) I’ve come to realise that we might not be viewing it in the right perspective. I ended up writing a comment under that video explaining how I saw things, and realised that maybe it could interest people here too? So here is the fleshed out version of it:
I think part of why they made Kohga extremely goofy compared to a way less goofy clan of literal assassins is to emphasise how even though the clan originally held some understandable beliefs, it has become a cult of personality over the years, and like most cults, the leader is way less charismatic than his followers make him out to be. Indeed, from the outside, it seems absurd how anyone could take Kohga seriously, let alone kill under his command, but from the inside, Kohga is the Beloved Leader That Guides Them Towards Victory, and anyone threatening him deserves to die.
In a way, yiga clan members feel like vulnerable, impressionable people who were enrolled into a cult and given a Big Family and a purpose (and a lethal weapon) by their lovable Master Kohga who wants the best for them… Except if you want to get out, then you’re a filthy traitor who also deserves to die. It’s especially visible when you beat him and they all get personally mad at you for killing him. They didn’t care about Ganon, they didn’t seem to actually understand the bigger picture, they only cared about Kohga.
It also shows how, like the rest of Hyrule, the Yigas are very much disconnected from their own history, seemingly holding on the grudge their ancestors held more as an excuse to continue to enact violence and perpetuate the cult of personality than fighting for a “noble” cause. Only Kohga seems to actually care about Calamity Ganon, and the rest of the yigas seem to be just tools to him. Wether or not he’s actually conscious of what he’s doing is unclear. Is he a fully aware con artist, or is he purely another product of Yiga indoctrination?
So yeah, to me it feels like a parody/critic/mockery of cult dynamics. It shows that this gang of assassins are indeed a real menace, but for seemingly no reason other than “that one lunatic they admire told them to” and “if they go away they get killed”. The reason why the clan was originally created becomes almost anecdotal. Under the current leader, no one is required to actually know what they’re doing, they just need to follow orders.
In the end, I think it is the intention the developers had because cults are a rampant problem in Japan. At the very least, even if it’s not a actually conscious critic, it’s a concept that is much more present in their cultural landscape than ours and that almost certainly influenced how they handled the Yiga clan. Basically, cults are not cool and can even be dangerous both for the public and their members. Cult leaders especially are not cool and often are con artists. Therefore, Kohga couldn’t be badass, he had to be a doofus getting beaten in the most unexceptional way possible.

So I've been playing Palworld!
I fully expected to end up disliking it, if not outright hating it. My first impression back when I saw the trailer ages ago was that it was a well done parody trailer, making fun of Pokemon. Once I realised that it was real... I dunno, I still expected it to commit completely to the parody aspects. "Look at these creatures that you can enslave and put to war!! Aren't we subversive and unique??!"
But no, actually, it's really fun! The "edgier" aspects are there, like killing the Pals for food, or giving them guns and putting them on an assembly line, but you don't actually have to. You can still pat them and feed them and keep them happy and love them and and and they're my besties and I love them. There's a fox that you can tuck under your arm and use as a flamethrower. The easiest way to catch them is to beat them up with a bat before throwing a Pal Sphere, but hey. It's just taking out the middleman at this point.
It's obviously still in Early Access, and I've had a couple of falls through the floor. It also crashes about once or twice every time I play, which is annoying, but it autosaves so I haven't actually lost anything so far.
The monsters... I mean, you could very easily put a lot of them into an actual Pokemon game. Like, that's the main complaint that everybody who hasn't played it gives, but...
Tumblr media
What do you think of my Goodra/Meganium? He's a good lad and I love him.
There's a hell of a lot that aren't Pokemon lookalikes, but sometimes you just kinda see one and go "well boy howdy, that's a Pokemon". There aren't any (that I've seen yet) that look like a Digimon or any other franchise , only Pokemon. I mean, just look at the head of that thing. That's such a Pokemon face. I think it's literally Meganium's head. And Lilligant's flower maybe? Still, it's not a bad design, it's coherent and cute.
Tumblr media
And then there's ones like this dude, who looks like he'd have a PS1 platforming RPG game or something. Look at him!
Overall, I really like this game! There's a few lil blips here and there, but it's pretty decent! The biggest drawback is that it's a really big filesize and makes your computer fan go like crazy, so make sure all the vents and things are clear in case of fire hazard. I'd also really appreciate a button for opening the map while playing on controller, I hate having to drag out the keyboard for it.
Good game, A+, if you wanted Pokemon Legends Arceus to be more like BOTW, check it out.
