Something I know deep down is that if Wylan did the butterfly scene in the books, that boy would be making jokes about Jesper having butterflies in his stomach around him now, then Jesper would be like "now? I always got butterflies around you" then Wylan would blush and probably be like "did you get butterflies around Kuwei" then Jesper would be like "One time, I mess you guys up one time and I'll never live it down" and you can't convince me that scene would go any other way

Basement alchemy: Yannis & The Yaw sees Foals' Yannis Philippakis and Afrobeat legend Tony Allen forge a treasure with 'Walk Through Fire'
Tumblr media
The lead track from YANNIS PHILIPPAKIS’ posthumous collaboration with Afrobeat drumming legend TONY ALLEN captures the electrifying spark that ignited during their global musical meeting, weaving a tapestry of sound that reflects the cultural touchstones of Lagos, Paris, and London. Read our latest Dork Mixtape cover feature now.

“It’s about serendipity and coming together with someone.” There’s always something amazing when you get to meet your heroes, but for Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis, the opportunity to not only meet but work with legendary Afrobeat pioneering drummer Tony Allen was a truly special experience. Tragically, Tony passed away during the pandemic, leaving the work that they started in flux, but seven years after they first met, Yannis has now put together a beautiful EP documenting their time and the music they made together as a special project under the name Yannis And The Yaw. ‘Lagos Paris London’ is a reflection of a moment in time and two generations meeting and creating a little bit of magic.
Tumblr media
With Foals riding high on the wild success of their fourth album ‘What Went Down’, a call offering an intriguing opportunity came following two years of hard touring. “I got a call when we were deep in a Foals tour. We were touring ‘What Went Down’ so it was quite a few years ago now. I got a call from a mutual friend who said, do you want to go and write with Tony Allen in Paris?” says Yannis.
The mention of Tony Allen’s name immediately conjured excitement as he remembered the pivotal role Tony and his work as drummer for Fela Kuti, as well as his long and winding career, played in the genesis and evolution of Foals. “A lot of our formative musical years were spent listening to Fela Kuti,” he explains. “Especially this one compilation of Tony Allen’s that I think is just called ‘The Best Of’. It’s a quadruple vinyl. We used to hammer it when we were writing ‘Antidotes’ and ‘Total Life Forever’. I was a huge fan.”
He was immediately hooked on the unique skill of his drumming. “Another song that we loved that he played on was ‘La Ritournelle’ by Sebastian Tellier; that was a song we all obsessed over. His drumming is a huge part of why that song is great.”
youtube
While the opportunity sounded exciting, a “no brainer”, as Yannis explains it, the reality of actually making it work became more of an issue. “I got home, and I hadn’t been home for a couple of months, and I collapsed into a puddle the moment the keys were thrown on the table. I was like, fuck, I don’t know if I’ve got the energy to get up and get to Paris the next day,” says Yannis as he describes his exhaustion after a punishing Foals tour. “I almost put it off, but my friend at the time encouraged me and said, look, you’ve got to go there for two days. It might be the experience of a lifetime, then you can come home and rest.”
For the experience of a lifetime, Yannis recounts the details in a refreshingly simple and down-to-earth style. “So, I trotted off with my guitar to the Eurostar and I got there in the morning,” he begins. “It was a basement studio. Very French and very 70s. Full of cigarette smoke and bad carpet and mirrors in weird places. It was basically Tony’s home, in a way. His drums were permanently set up in the live room.”
Tumblr media
For the music icon that is Tony Allen, he had seen and experienced everything there is to experience and had worked with a who’s who of musical legends, “What was funny about the first encounter was he wasn’t particularly phased or that excited that I was there. He was just in his own vibe,” laughs Yannis. “I don’t think he knew of my work. It was set up, and he was in a place where he was very open to collaborating with people. He was doing some stuff with Jeff Mills. Tony, in general, collaborated a lot. He approached it like a jazz drummer. The producers and the other musicians that were around Tony knew me; they helped me set up and were very welcoming.”
Was there a sense of trepidation, though, and having to prove yourself and prove your musical chops? “It wasn’t that Tony wasn’t welcoming, but he was waiting to see what it was going to be like. Who’s this little punk?” he laughs.
Almost instantly, though, the musical alchemy bubbled up, and from their first jam together came the project’s first track with the heavy groove of ‘Walk Through Fire’. “It’s a simple song,” he explains. “It largely revolves around this one riff. We played it round a couple of times, and some of these other French guys in the studio who knew Tony played along and were either helping out on bass or percussion. We kinda had it there. The moment that that had happened we were getting on like a house on fire after that. The room changed.”
As they played more and more, Yannis discovered at close quarters what he loved about Tony’s artistry and even discovered new things. “I was surprised at how quietly he played,” he says with deep reverence. “Coming from proper big arena rock shows on this Foals tour and playing songs like ‘What Went Down’ and ‘Snakeoil’ was a total pivot into this much more deft style of playing. Just being in a room with him and hearing him in the moment playing his drums that I had become so familiar with, the texture and the rhythm of the way he played and that being on something that I was writing live on the spot and that we were inhabiting the same moment of creativity together in a room was just electrifying.”
‘Walk Through Fire’ was the spark that ignited the whole project. “It was the first thing. It’s immediate in the same way that it was immediate in the room on that day,” enthuses Yannis. “The lyrics are pretty resonant with the time we’re living in. Tony encouraged this in me. He wanted the lyrics to be engaged with the social fabric. A lot of Tony’s music, and the lineage of Fela Kuti and Afrobeat, is often very political with protest songs. In discussing with Tony about the lyrics, he wanted it to mine the social discord. It resonates today. It’s got this fresh energy. It feels like a more garagey or bluesy song. It’s quite rough and freeing and fun. It was a good entry point to the project but also makes sense chronologically.”
Tumblr media
The jamming session in Paris was intended to lead to work beginning on a full album, but events got in the way firstly with scheduling issues and then Covid before Tony’s sad passing, which ultimately gave Yannis the impetus to turn those special moments into something real and tangible. “Covid really scuppered us because he was based in Paris. It was impossible for so long,” he explains. “As is the way with collaborations, once you’ve captured the lighting in the bottle, sometimes you don’t complete it when you should. You know that it’s there, so you get slightly complacent about it. I had a lot of stuff with Foals and he was busy as well doing The Good, The Bad and The Queen. He was really busy, and between us we couldn’t get together. Sadly and tragically, he passed away during Covid. It strangely was a massive motivation to try to finish it. Largely out of guilt that we hadn’t done it while he was alive and realising that it had been such a special experience in my life creatively, but just as a person, it was such a unique moment for us to have not completed it and played shows together. Out of bittersweet guilt, I really wanted to finish it. We needed to put them out to do it justice.”
The EP is a beautiful tribute to the enduring legacy of Tony Allen and the creative spirit he represents. “His music will live on forever,” says Yannis passionately. “The drums will play on. He had such an incredible and unique style of playing. He was the originator. He was the source. There’s an untappable well that will continue to inspire people for generations.”
The record is also an example of his dexterity as a musician and willingness to still try new things. “This release is an interesting perspective on Tony’s writing,” says Yannis. “It’s definitely a different project than Tony’s worked on before. It’s the heaviest stuff he was involved in. For me, it’s obviously the most inspired by jazz and Afrobeat. For people coming to the EP, it’s an interesting prism that we were both put in and thrust together to write this.”
Even more remarkable is that it almost never happened. “Had I not gone to Paris that day and further along, had we not kept it up and had we not finished it, through these chance meetings and happenings, you can end up with something that’s precious and is permanent,” he continues. “When so much of life is impermanent, that’s a really important lesson that I learned. I feel protective over the record. It’s a treasure and a document of two people who came together. He was in his seventies when I met him, and I was in my twenties. There’s something amazing about two people from different cultures and backgrounds and generations being thrust together unknowingly without knowing each other and through music very quickly bonding and forming and creating something that will last.”
Tumblr media
This collaborative project comes at a time when Foals are able to take a pause and reflect on a triumphant couple of years following their euphoric 2022 album ‘Life Is Yours’ which cemented them firmly at the top of the UK band pantheon after almost two decades of innovation. “We’ve been smashing it for so many years; it’s been such a constant focus of our lives,” says Yannis, explaining the band’s desire to take stock. “It has been incredible to devote yourself to something so absorbing, but I think every now and then you just have to come up for air and remind yourself what life looks like above the parapet. For self-preservation and the preservation of the band, it’s important to occasionally stop and assess what exactly we want to do next rather than just automatically make another record without consideration. This time, we want to think about what we’re going to do next, and I think that’s natural after having put out quite a few records; it’s important for us to decide what we want to do.”
In the meantime, Yannis And The Yaw offers the opportunity to have some fun and do something a little different. Certainly not a solo project, but just a different kind of creative expression. “I’ve left it open-ended,” he says excitedly. “The idea behind the Yaw part is that it could be a rotating collaborative project. The title, ‘Lagos Paris London’, is the cultural touchstones for the EP, and it’s a musical postcard from these locations. If there was to be another project with the Yaw again, it would be three different locations and a different cultural mix. It’s not meant to be a solo expression. This EP is an archive of time recording with Tony and French musicians Vincent Taeger and Vincent Tuarelle, who were really important and produced it. I would imagine they might be part of the Yaw. It’s important to make the distinction. If I were to do a solo record, it would sound a lot different. This is led by Tony and the group of his musicians in France. If I was to do another one, it would sound quite different. There are no plans for that right now. I want to leave it open-ended and let this EP have its time in the sun, and let’s see what happens later on.”
With the EP arriving at the end of the summer, there’s a tantalising opportunity for perhaps some gigs as Yannis looks to continue to honour the legacy of one of his all-time heroes. “I think we will,” he smiles when asked if he’s planning to bring these songs to life on stage. “Not an extensive tour, but a couple of shows to give the record a good release and a good send-off and honour Tony.”

The Issue with Translation - BotW Quest Log Edition
Back in 2017, a tumblr post went around the interwebs claiming that BotW had a secret hidden journal of Link’s in the form of a quest log. According to this post, which as over 15,000 notes by the way, claims that the Quest Log is actually Link’s journal and that the whole thing is written in a first person perspective.
Now according to this post, another gamer first discovered this travesty, a Chinese gamer called atomaruU, whose twitter account is where the first images were posted.
Now atomaruU also seems to know Japanese as well, and according to her own tweet claims that the journal is in fact from Link’s point of view.
The tumblr post also claims that big bad NoA replaced all of the “I” pronouns with you, as some big, horrible erasure of Link’s perspective and personality.
But let’s explore that, shall we? Let’s start at the beginning.
Pronouns in Japanese
Everyone knows that in Japanese, the pronoun for “I” is “watashi”, right?
Well, it’s not so simple.
Japanese is quite complex, and a very contextual language. There is an idea that the subject of a sentence is assumed rather than outright said. In English, this is considered bad grammar.
Went to the store, bought a pink sweater wanted.
In Japanese, this is perfectly natural because “I” is implied. If I used I, it would look like this:
私はお店に行って、欲しかったピンクのセーターを買いました
And without I
お店に行って、欲しかったピンクのセーターを買いました
Both of these are perfectly acceptable and grammatically correct.
But this is just scratching the surface. There are so many pronouns in the Japanese language that it is ridiculous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source: https://legendsoflocalization.com/personal-pronouns-in-japanese/
ALL of these are acceptable to use, to varying degrees. But you can see that English is limited to a single one: I. There is a loss of meaning when you translate from Japanese to English, because “I” does not capture all the nuances of the Japanese pronouns that are present. You cannot blame localizers for having a hard time or making choices in localization when something like this exists.
I don’t intend to go over all the pronouns that exist. Legends of Localization (the link above) does a very good job of that already. Instead, I want to go over the pronouns that are present in the Zelda series (that I know of), to give you a sense of some of their meanings and how they have been used. I am also showing you what they are so you can identify them later when I start to prove my point.
Watashi/Watakushi (私)
According to Legends of Localization:
Watashi can be considered the default and most neutral version of “I” or “me” in Japanese. In formal situations or when being generally polite, watashi can be used by just about anyone. In informal situations, watashi leans a tad toward the feminine side.
Note that Watashi and Watakushi uses the same kanji. Watakushi is more formal:
Watakushi is a more formal version of watashi, and is common in both everyday Japanese and in entertainment Japanese.
Watakushi is usually used to express greater politeness and formality than watashi. It gets used all the time during political speeches, press conferences, business deals, and other things of that nature.
In entertainment, using watakushi outside of formal situations can lend a character a “prim and proper” feeling, or the sense of being very cultured. In some cases, this can be used to make a character sound snobby too.
Princess Zelda uses this pronoun a lot across the series.
Tumblr media
We can see LBW Zelda is using watakushi here.
Tumblr media
While 私 is used, is it impossible to say which pronunciation is being used here.
Tumblr media
Young Zelda in OoT does not use the kanji for her pronoun, unlike her adult version here, but she uses “watashi”.
Boku (僕 or ぼく)
Boku is another common pronoun:
Boku is an informal, masculine pronoun for “I/me”. It doesn’t carry a strong, sharp sense of manliness, though. Instead, it gives off a slightly softer masculine vibe that’s hard to describe with one word.
Boku can also give off the sense of boyish-ness, gentleness, timidness, decency, and/or being spoiled, among other things.
Note that girls can sometimes use boku too – doing so generally gives them a “tomboy” feeling.
In other words, while “watashi” is generally neutral but slightly feminine leaning, “boku” is masculine that is boyish.
Tumblr media
Sheik (who is Princess Zelda in disguise), uses this pronoun, likely to sell the masculine image she was trying to go for.
Tumblr media
Gulley, a young boy, is the perfect choice for “boku”.
Ore (俺 or おれ)
Per the Legends of Localization:
Ore is another common male pronoun in Japanese. It projects a much stronger, harsher, and manlier feeling than boku. As such, it’s considered a bit crude, and isn’t fit for formal situations or when trying to be polite.
Ore can lend a person a sense of masculinity, strength, confidence, being in charge, and/or vulgarness. Among close friends and family, ore can instead indicate familiarity.
Ore is primarily a male pronoun, but female characters use it on occasion too. Usually this makes them sound tough, manly, and intimidating:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two characters are touch, masculine men. Not really much more to say here.
Washi (ワシ or わし )
Old people in Japanese entertainment often use washi to refer to themselves. It’s usually used by old men, but not always. Washi is extremely common in Japanese entertainment, but not as common in everyday Japanese.
In other words, you will rarely hear this pronoun out in the wild but it’s common for old timers in media.
Tumblr media
The Great Deku Tree uses “washi”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These characters are older, and “washi” helps give that impression.
Ora (おら or オラ)
Ora tends to give off a feeling that someone is from certain rural regions of Japan or that someone is from a remote area in general. Related to this, ora can also give off a strong “country bumpkin” vibe. Ora mostly appears in entertainment these days.
Tumblr media
We see the Goron from OoT using here, being a country bumpkin from the mountains.
Oira (おいら)
Oira feels a little less “country bumpkin” than ora. Oira appears quite often in entertainment, but not very often in everyday Japanese anymore.
In modern Japanese entertainment, oira can still be used to lend characters a rural vibe, but more often than not, oira is associated with lovable rascals, rambunctious youngsters, friendly mascots, and other characters of that sort.
Tumblr media
Apparently Skull Kid in MM also uses “oira”.
Warawa (わらわ)
Warawa is almost exclusive to Japanese entertainment now, and is usually used by powerful female rulers or noblewomen. This pronoun indicates that a woman considers herself far above everyone else, so it often also carries a condescending vibe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruto is talking here, a spoiled and haughty Princess of the Zora. Very... fitting.
Yo (余)
The personal pronoun yo is mostly an entertainment-only thing today. It’s sort of like an old-timey watashi and is usually used by members of royalty or people of high rank.
Yo is often associated with the old samurai times, especially with feudal lords and warriors of high standing.
Tumblr media
Atai (アタイ)
Atai isn’t used much in everyday Japanese these days, but it’s pretty common to see it in Japanese entertainment. Atai is generally used by female characters with rough, brash attitudes. It also gives them a “you don’t wanna mess with me” vibe.
Tumblr media
Wai (わい)
Wai is a regional, mostly male personal pronoun associated with the Kansai area of Japan, which includes Osaka. Characters who use wai often also use wate, and vice-versa.
Apparently, the Fisherman from OoT uses wai, but I did not find a screenshot.
Tumblr media
Ware/Warera (われ/われら)
Ware is a personal pronoun that’s seen in old, literary texts. It also pops up from time to time in certain Japanese dialects. It’s a bit unique in that it can mean both “me” and “you” in these dialects, depending on how it’s used. You’re more likely to see ware used in entertainment, though.
Fictional characters who use ware tend to be old or feel like they’re from old samurai times. Ware can also lend things an “ancient and imposing” feeling, so it’s often used by ancient, powerful beings as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see that Impa uses it in BotW, because she is quite old. Interestingly enough, the Triforce uses this phrase in OoS/OoA, but uses the plural “warera” version instead. In LttP, the Triforce uses the singular “watashi” instead. Just a fun little tidbit there. The uses of ware and warera give Impa and the Triforce a sense that they are very ancient and powerful.
Boku-chin (ボクちん)
Boku-chin is a variation of boku. It occasionally appears in entertainment, and only rarely in modern, everyday Japanese. Boku-chin lends the speaker a sort of giddy, childish vibe.
Tumblr media
Nekkid!
Unique Pronouns!
Tumblr media
There are so many pronouns. Legend of Localization points out that this Goron uses “wazu”, something they had never seen before (me as well).
Wait a minute... you went through all these but isn’t something missing?
Don’t worry, I’m not trying to trick you. I have a purpose here.
Before I talk about the elephant in the room, I want to address the screenshots that have been shown in the “whistleblowing” posts about how big bad NoA removed first person POV from the Quest Logs.
Tumblr media
13か所の想い出の地を巡り ゼルダ姫の想いを受け取った
想い出の中のゼルダ姫はいつも一生懸命だった
一刻も早くゼルダ姫を救い出して彼女の美第をもう一度この目で見たい
If you take a quick glance, you will notice that there are absolutely no personal pronouns whatsoever. Like I discussed before, this is completely natural and normal in Japanese. It could be “you” or “I”, but at the end of the day, the point of view has not been announced through any pronouns at all. Furthermore, there is no concrete context on what the POV should be either.
Ok, but let’s play a little game. Let us translate the text directly without localization. Then, let us input the pronouns “I” and “You” into where English would have them. Let’s see what happens.
Visited 13 places of memories and received the feelings of Princess Zelda.
Princess Zelda in the memories was always working hard....
Want to rescue Princess Zelda as soon as possible and see her beauty again with own eyes.
With I:
I visited the 13 places of memories and received the feelings of Princess Zelda.
Princess Zelda in my memories was always working hard....
I want to rescue Princess Zelda as soon as possible and see her beauty again with my own eyes.
Now with You:
You visited the 13 places of memories and received the feelings of Princess Zelda.
Princess Zelda in you memories was always working hard....
You want to rescue Princess Zelda as soon as possible and see her beauty again with your own eyes.
Without looking at the official English translation, what is the difference?
NOTHING. There is no difference. It all means the same thing. YOU are Link. So YOU, as Link, want to see Princess Zelda’s beauty again. You get the same impression REGARDLESS of first or second person (and yes, it’s in second person, not third person like others claim for whatever reason).
The only thing you can complain about here is that the last line removed the part about wanting to see Zelda’s beauty again. BUT the idea that you want to rescue her as quickly as possible remains intact.
Let’s check out another one:
Tumblr media
過酷だった剣の試練を乗り越え
マスターソードの力を余さず使いこなせる肉体と精神力を手に入れた きっとゼルダ姫も成長を祝福してくれているだろう
Once again you will notice there are no personal pronouns at all. Let’s play the same game as before:
Overcame the harsh trials of the sword.
Have the physical and mental strength to use the full power of the Master Sword.
Princess Zelda would have congratulated on growth, right?
Now with I:
I overcame the harsh trials of the sword.
I have the physical and mental strength to use the full power of the Master Sword.
I’m sure Princess Zelda would have congratulated me on my growth.
Now with You:
You overcame the harsh trials of the sword.
You have the physical and mental strength to use the full power of the Master Sword.
You’re sure Princess Zelda would have congratulated you on your growth.
What’s the difference? NOTHING. You (Link) overcame the trials and gained strength! I’m SURE Zelda would have been very happy with your growth.
Not only that, but the NoA version captured that very well with little changes, so wtf is the issue?!
For funsies I decided to insert the last line into two separate translators to see what they spit out, and each one implied two different lines.
If you put the line into DeepL, it says “I'm sure Princess Zelda would have congratulated you on your growth.”.
But if you slip it into Google Translate, you get “I'm sure Princess Zelda is also celebrating her growth.”
Do you see how a single line can have different perspectives in Japanese without context or pronouns?!
Ok, last one before we get to the elephant in the room:
Tumblr media
灼熱の試練に耐えたおかげで古代の祠が姿を現した
・・・
・・・ あ カペータのオトコの句の枠はないゴロ? ちょっとざんねんゴロ・・・
The original tumblr post is claiming that Link’s sense of humor by trying to speak like the Gorons is lost, because the English didn’t copy the “goro” ( ゴロ ) sound in the last two sentences.
And while this is true, NoA didn’t use goro” in this particular part here, this is still overall dishonest because the lines still poke fun at how the Gorons speak, despite the fact they don’t use  ゴロ at all.
To emphasis my point, we will play that game again:
An ancient shrine has emerged thanks to the endurance of the scorching trials.
....
... Ah, there is no room for Kabetta’s man phrase, goro? Little disappointing, goro.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An ancient shrine has emerged thanks to the endurance of the scorching trials.
...
.... Ah, there is no room for Kabetta’s man phrase, goro? I’m a little disappointed, goro.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An ancient shrine has emerged thanks to the endurance of the scorching trials. ...
.... Ah, there is no room for Kabetta’s man phrase, goro? You’re a little disappointed, goro.
And yes, the English version did, in fact, change this for some bloody reason, but the “playful” attitude from Link in the NoA version is still there by 1. asking if that was all and 2. Using “brother” in the place of “goro”.
Because while the Gorons in English use “goro”, they also use “brother” all the time.
Tumblr media
The concept is still the same despite the language that is being mimicked has changed.
To say that it’s entirely gone is being dishonest.
Jibun (自分 or じぶん)
Now we have reached the elephant in the room. The one that blows this whole thing apart. Jibun.
Now, what is jibun? Let’s let Legend of Localization take it away again:
The Japanese word jibun usually means “self”, “myself”, “yourself”, “himself”, “herself”, and so on. But jibun is often used as a first-person pronoun too, in both the real world and in entertainment.
Jibun places a clear distinction between the speaker and the listener, so in the real world, someone might use it when talking to a visitor, an instructor, a potential business partner, etc.
Jibun is also heavily associated with organizations that emphasize rank, discipline, and regulations. As such, jibun is commonly used in Japanese entertainment by:
People who are in the military People who are in the police force People who are involved in athletics
This word does, in fact, appear at least once in the Quest Log in this quest:
Tumblr media
So that’s it, right? We have a person pronoun in use!
No. No, not at all. It’s not that simple.
Jibun has been used several times in the series, and its usage and its translation varies.
Take this line for instance, from OoT:
見た目は ネズミのお人形。 自分で走る 新型バクダン。
This line translates as:
It looks like a mouse doll. A new type of bomb that runs on its own.
Here is another, said by a Sheikah Stone in OoT:
チュウゴロンは 自分のサイズを 考えなかったので 店が すごく きゅうくつらしい
Translation:
Medigoron did not think about his size. His store is very cramped.
Another!
ダークリンク 自分自身に打ち勝つのよ!!
Translation!
Dark Link
You must conquer yourself!!
Hey, let’s keep going!
20ルピーの お面なのに 10ルピーしか くれなかった!! ソンした! 10ルピーを 自分で 穴うめして お面の代金 20ルピーを お面屋に 納めに戻ろう。
In the official English translation, it was translated as this:
He just gave you 10 Rupees for this 20-Rupee mask! You lost money on that deal! Go back to the Mask Shop and pay 20 Rupees for the mask. The difference will have to come out of your own pocket.
This particular translation could have EASILY been “The difference will have to come out of my own pocket” but the translators chose “your” because it still works.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The translators have been consistent with second person from the Japanese text, not in spite of BotW!
The only reason I can think of people being mad now instead of 20 years ago is because the changes they did make ruins their Zelda x Link ship.
And it’s not like the Japanese has ever made it clear when it’s supposed to be “You” or “I” in other situations. Let’s look at the famous line “I found a mirror”.
Tumblr media
Here, the translators made it come from Link’s first person view, but the Japanese is not as clear on POV.
Tumblr media
テーブルノシタデ カガミヲミツケタゾ
Again, no pronouns. The entire sentence is written in Katagana.
For those of you unfamiliar with Japanese, here is a quick rundown- there are essentially three “alphebets” in Japanese: hiragana, katagana, and kanji. Hiragana is used for native Japanese words and the like, but Katagana is usually used for foreign words. “Bread” in Japanese, for example, is “pan”, and is almost always written in katagana.
But katagana can also be used for any word when the writer wants to emphasize something, like if the character is feeling a strong emotion. But it can be also used in other ways too.
In this case, the sentence is using EVERYTHING, including particles, in katagana. This is highly unusual. It should look like this:
テーブルの下 かがみをみつたぞ
You will notice “table” is still in katagana because “table” ( テーブル ) is a word of foreign origin. But the rest of it is in hiragana. This looks more natural.
However, it is still very likely that it’s not Link’s point of view, because the entire Japanese uses katagana for everything.
Tumblr media
This lady only speaking in katagana.
Tumblr media
This sign is also in katagana.
If everything is in katagana, then “I found a mirror under the table” may not be any more significant to POV than any other game. It may just mean that Japanese isn’t supposed to be this world’s language (this is kind of supported by how most Hylian text can be translated by the English alphabet, and that Zelda II’s menus are in English as well).
Now, other times Link has “found” something, the Japanese once again uses no pronouns, but the English opted for “You.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now let’s return to the BotW quest log that used “jibun”.
Now you may be looking at 自分 and going  “AHA! Wait a minute! THIS one as  が next to it, making it a personal pronoun!” Well, I’m sorry to burst your bubble but that’s not true either. Here is an example sentence from this source here:
あの人は自分がかわいいだけなんだ。
That person(he/she) only care about themselves.
So, if we focus primarily on that section, let’s see what it can be translated to:
Even now, Princess Zelda is fighting to pin the Calamity down. Her heart believes you will come....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even now, Princess Zelda is fighting to pin the Calamity down. Her heart believes I will come...
Any differences in perspective are minor at best. The same meanings are given, Link’s personality is mostly in tacked (and if they aren’t, it’s because the English actually changed the translation, not because they changed it from first person to second person)! Both of these translations are perfectly acceptable.
I also took the liberty to check the rest of the logs and wouldn’t you know it, there is only one other use of “jibun” in the entire thing (at least that I noticed).

In other words, the use of “jibun” is actually quite complicated. It a sense of “self”- whether inanimate or animate, and can be used in a number of ways. If you want to get mad at BotW for not using I, you will have to get mad at previously established games for doing the exact same thing.
It’s also weird because if you look at the Quest Log (冒険手帳 in Japanese), it treats Link’s memories in the third person exclusively, as pointed out by this tumblr post:
Tumblr media
As clear as day, it says “Zelda and Link” on the memory description. That means the entire Quest Log is not in Link’s perspective.
Check out the post I linked as well: they bring up a few other things that I will not be doing on this post.
Summary
Now with all that said, the Japanese is definitely less formal sounding than the English is. The Japanese is sort of casual, even more personable. And the English absolutely cut out stuff that had no reason to be cut out whatsoever.
But to claim that it was all originally first person and NoA is evil so made it second person is just plain wrong. To claim that a lot of Link’s personality was lost because of the second person change is also wrong; however, claiming Link’s personality was lost because of the legit lines changes or removal is completely valid.
The tumblr post I linked earlier also says they saw no pronouns used for Link. Legend of Localizations did not use Link in their “jibun” section despite using many Zelda characters, especially from BotW, for other sections (however, I found some myself they didn’t include either, so this is hardly conclusive).
It’s a shame that this misunderstanding is so widespread, and I hope I was able to explain why it’s not as ironclad as people like to believe it is.

Let Them Talk
Corpse Husband x Reader (Female) ft. Sykkuno
Warnings: Swearing, Jealousy
Genre: Fluff, a bit of Angst
Summary: We can all agree Among Us is a fun game on its own but what makes it ten times better is playing it with the right company. Y/N could agree 100% Being a streamer herself, she loves playing with the streamer gang that includes her boyfriend and best friend. But, what happens when her boyfriend starts doubting her feelings for him due to her close relationship with her best friend.
Requested by @cheetoscat . Thank you so much for your request! Sorry it took so long to write, I hope the final product is worth the wait. Enjoy! Love, Vy ❤
Y/AU/N - Your Among Us Name
I settle in my gaming chair, adjusting my webcam one last time before joining the Among Us lobby with my friends.
“Hi everyone!“ I say into the mic, a smile plastering itself on my face. Discord is a magical thing, man. It’s so easy to forget that the people you are talking to aren’t around you or within arm’s reach. You could be separated by miles and miles of land or - in our case - oceans as well. Distance becomes negligible when you hear your friends’ voices, their laughter; when you have a good time together despite being each behind a screen, often times alone.
Well, I’m one of those lucky ones that isn’t alone. No one knows that, though. Everyone thinks I’m a single, self-employed girl that’s straight out of college. And they are 90% right. Only thing is - I’m not single. That would be a shocker in and of itself, but revealing who’s changed my relationship status would be a bomb with a whole new intensity.
Speaking of my significant other who shall remain unnamed - just kidding, it’s Corpse - his form materializes in the doorway of my recording room. I give him a hand signal the camera isn’t able to capture, alerting him of the fact that my mic is on. He replies by blowing me a kiss and walking off down the hall to his recording room where he’ll be stationed for the next three or so hours.
I owe this relationship to my best friend Sykkuno. I’m a pretty new and not very well known on the platform, however, thanks to him I haven’t only obtained a boyfriend, but a following of a little over million subscribers as well.
It all started with an invitation to fill a spot in the Among Us lobby him and his friends had created. It took him quite a bit to convince me to join, but I eventually caved and agreed. Suddenly, there I was. In a Discord call, in an Among Us lobby with some of the most well-known names on this platform. I’m talking YouTube legends. I was that puppy playing with the big dogs. The newbie tagging along with the big leagues. Or at least that’s how I felt until we all started vibing - talking and teasing each other as though we’ve known each other for years and not minutes.
When I joined the call, Corpse wasn’t present. After everyone else introduced themselves, Sykkuno informed me that we were waiting for Corpse to return. The name sounded really cool to me and I was genuinely very excited to meet this Corpse guy.
And then, out of the blue - no prep, no warning...
“Did you get someone to fill the spot? Oh- Hello, Y/AU/N.“
…he started talking and he had me star-struck. Apparently, he also had me a blabbering mess cause I remember blurting out: “Whoa, who’s this guy speaking in bold and underlined at the same time?”
The entire lobby, including Corpse, laughed. Sean, or Jack like they called him most often, answered my question, “That is the voice of God, Y/N. Its source is named Corpse, though.”
Heat spread from the bottom of my neck to the tips of my ears. I was mortified by my own stupidity. I was well aware they couldn’t see me and I was incredibly thankful for that, but I simply could not get myself to open my eyes. “I’m so sorry.” I said through nervous laughter.
“No, no, I like that description. Bold and underlined at the same time, huh?“ His voice sounded even more pleasant when it had that teasing, mischievous note to it. That thought popping up in my head only made things worse for my self-esteem and only made me more embarrassed, causing me to hide my face in my hands. “You sure it’s not in Italics as well?“
His question got a weak laugh out of me. “Nope, definitely not. Nothing Italic about it.“
Yes, I don’t even know how some terrible jokes about MS Word fonts got me as far as a romantic relationship, but they did! We’ve been living together for quite some time now, dating for even longer - hiding it just as long. It’s not that we have been actively trying to hide it or something, we just wanted to see how long it would take someone to become sus of us. When we realized no one would notice, we decided that if any rumors about us started, or even fans shipping us, we’d come clean. That hasn’t happened either, so we haven’t had the proper chance to address our relationship and neither of us minds.
At this point, I’m honestly afraid of revealing it to the gaming squad. Sykkuno especially. He’s my best friend, after all. I can see him being hurt by the fact that I kept a secret so big even from him. The last thing I wanna do is hurt my best friend but it’s already too late for that, it’s inevitable.
“Y/N have you looked at Twitter today?“ Rae, another streamer I’ve become close with over the months, says urgently.
Overlooking the tension in her words, I answer: “Nope, haven’t had the time. Why? What’s up?“
Before Rae can say anything else, Sykkuno joins the conversation, his voice somehow even more urgent than Rae’s. “It’s nothing, Y/N. If you see it, just don’t let it bother you, ok?”
Hearing such a tone from Rae isn’t unusual, but hearing it from Sykkuno is completely different and a lot more worrisome. “Well if it has the potential of bothering me it can’t be nothing. What’s going on?”
Just then, my phone dings with two notifications. I check to see they are messages from Rae.
“I sent you screenshots. Sorry, Sykkuno. She has to know in order to address it and defuse it as well. I know better than anyone how fast these rumors can spread, especially if no one reacts to them.“ She says, her tone barely apologetic at all.
I open the screenshots she has sent me and I find myself frozen in shock. Some old pictures of Sykkuno and I have been posted on Twitter by some random user. These pictures have started an entire thread of suspicions surrounding our relationship.
The pictures in question are from a New Year’s Eve party a mutual friend of ours held two years ago. Sure, in the pictures we are a lot closer than what would be considered a platonic proximity. And yes one of the pictures is of me kissing his cheek. Yes we were both a bit tipsy. I acknowledge all those things and yet none of them are concrete reasons for these rumors to have started piling.
“This is silly.“ I finally say after maybe five minutes of silence on my end. ”This is absolutely ridiculous! And why are people so serious about it as well? Actual, important matters get discussed more nonchalantly than the potential relationship between two online personalities! What is this world we live in?“ I know I shouldn’t let these rumors get to me like this, especially not on camera. Still, I can’t help it. I feel it’s so unfair to Corpse. He has to put up with this as well and it’s by no means easy for him. I’ve been shipped with people from our group in the past and he always took those rumors to heart despite acting like he didn’t care. Neither of us should get worked up, but him getting upset about them creates a domino effect with my emotions - causing me to be hit just as hard as him, in some cases harder.
Rumors of the past aside, this one is the worst by far. Mostly cause even Corpse himself suspected something between Sykkuno and I at the very beginning, when we were still acquaintances, barely crossing into the realm of friends.
I pull up Twitter to look for the whole thread, barely sparing my stream chat a glance in the process. It seems pretty split - those who agree with me and those who think Sykkuno and I make ‘such an adorable couple’. The thread is ridiculously long, and if we take into account that it was only started approximately five hours ago, you can either view it as impressive, amusing or sad. Why sad? Because someone has dedicated so much time and effort into fueling the fire of a weakly supported theory.
I love Sykkuno with all my heart. Everyone knows that - fandom, streamer squad, Corpse and Sykkuno included. I love too much and too platonically to ever even dream of having a romantic connection with him. I thought that was more than obvious, but people are either blind here, or just grasping at straws. One thing’s for certain - they’re stepping on a nerve.
“Hey where’s Corpse? Did he disconnect?” Felix asks, gaining my full attention. My eyes dart to the monitor, searching through the little avatars in a desperate search for the one of my boyfriend. It’s nowhere to be found.
“He just messaged me saying his connection is unstable but he might join us later.“ Rae says, “You guys can invite someone to fill...“
“Bathroom break.“ I interrupt, not waiting for a response before shutting my mic off, putting the ‘BRB‘ graphic on my stream and yanking the headset off. I basically run down the hall to Corpse’s recording room, my heart pounding like a bass drum.
“Corpse?!“ I call out to him, one hand already on the doorknob. When five seconds pass by without a response, I barge in.
Inside, I find his usual spot on the gaming chair empty and his slumped figure seated on his bed.
“Corpse?“ I try again, watching for even the tiniest change of body language. He remains still as a statue, not bothering to look up at me either.
His hands are gripping the edge of the mattress, his head hanging low. His eyes are covered by the short curtain of his dark messy curls. I can’t gauge much. Is he angry? Is he sad? Both? How should I approach the situation?
Before I find the answer to any of those questions, I am kneeling in front of him, our height difference eliminated. I gently pry his hands off the mattress and take them in mine, holding them firmly but tenderly. With one hand I reach up to tilt his head so his eyes can meet mine. He complies, his tear-filled brown orbs meeting mine. Those tears have the same effect on me as fifty sharp knives stabbing into my chest. These tears focus their attack straight on my heart, tearing it to pieces.
“Baby....“
He cuts me off, “Why is it always someone else, huh? Do they deem me not worthy of being with you? Do they think you deserve better?” His voice wavers, “Well, they might be right. They are correct and there’s little I can do to prove them wrong. They mean you well, Y/N - pairing you with guys better than me. Those are some loyal fans you’ve got. They only want what’s best for you. And so do I. If ‘best’ is being with someone else then...”
It’s my turn to cut him off. I put an end to his nonsense ramble that’s slowly killing me by pressing my finger against his lips. The sternness of my gaze is beyond me as I get up and walk over to his computer setup. I put on his headset and hop into the call as well as the lobby with his avatar.
“Hey Corpse’s back!” Toast says, “Good to have you back buddy.”
“No, not Corpse.” I say in a casual, nonchalant voice.
“Wait, wha-“ Sean’s voice shows just how confused he is, representing the confusion of the entire lobby actually.
“I know all of you are streaming so this message will be heard by several different audiences so I’m gonna make myself perfectly clear.“ I take a deep breath, “Sykkuno and I aren’t dating. He’s a lovely guy and he deserves to find a girl who will treat him right. That girl isn’t and won’t be me though. I am already treating someone right. Someone who treats me more than right as well. An amazing person. A man-child with a heart of gold. You know him, to a certain extent. He goes by the name of Corpse Husband, but I prefer to call him ‘Love of my life’. Thank you for your time and attention, goodbye.“
I exit the call and turn around to find a stunned Copse looking at me.
“That was meant for you just as much.“ I say with a fake strict attitude, one hand on my hip the other rested on his desk behind me, “Were you listening?“
Within milliseconds, he’s on his feet standing directly in front of me, his lips inches away from mine. “I heard and memorized every word. But...” he pauses for a moment, “I think you have no idea how big of a chaos you just created.”
I smile mischievously, “We’ll worry about that later. For now...” I close the gap between us, connecting our lips in a sweet and passionate kiss.

Okay, for all of you who don't feel like watching Miles RP as David
Here are some of my favorite quotes. Context may be added if I feel like it. Reactions are my goblin brain screaming. All of these came from a discord so if they don't make sense . . . see goblin brain comment.
(That link should start directly at the point where he becomes David; if it doesn't, skip to 1:40:33)
In roughly chronological order:
David: "Teachers are sort of like camp counselors during the rest of the year."
The thing is David is absolutely up his own ass enough to think this.
David: "Trail mix is expensive!"
^ said to show he understands why not everyone can donate to the charity for teachers. Very adorable, am crying.
David's "ooooh" seeing one dude was extremely non-heterosexual. Fucking bicon. Him losing his mind that one of the arenas is called "Survey camp"
David: "A person's hitting me -- I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry this is just pretend!"
This is just canonically how David plays video games. Either this or he's unwilling to commit violence at all, but I'll defer to Miles.
David: "That's very goat of you!"
Tumblr media
Spencer: "Is David popular amongst his campers?"
David: "I like to think so! There's only 3 staff members, so I'm definitely in everyone's top 3."
"That also means you're in the bottom 3."
David: "Well, I choose not to think of it that way."
(I have to keep adding reacts so you can tell when one quote ends and another begins. Judge not lest ye be judged)
I think the other person in the stream is named Spencer. Friend of Miles. I know literally nothing else about him and am not even confident on those facts.
Every time he says something so non-David in his David voice I die: "I have a lot of grenades!"
David: "Oh my goodness, would you look at this beautiful scenery! Can we hike that mountain?"
This is so goddamn cute. I am dying. Miles looked at his fans and said "they will eat tonight" and I am so relieved.
David: "Not to be a couple of Greedy Garys, but I say we get this [care package] and then I'll drop another one!"
The fact that Miles is grinning like a lunatic the entire time is very good. (Also if this is formatted badly then I'm sorry but not all that sorry. I'm doing my best and David would be proud of me.)
David: "Didja getim? Didja getim? didja getim? How 'bout now?"
Spencer: "I didn't get 'em."
David: "Well, you tried your best and that's all that matters."
Tumblr media
He calls healing "a little health kiss." I'm not sure why but it's very important to me.
David: [while jumping to murder someone] "Hi! Scuse me!"
(i just need something to separate the quotes okay)
David: "Well you know what gang, we did our best. You don't always win the 3-legged race. You did a wonderful job!"
Then there's a bit where they talk about Spencer's time at summer camp:
David: "ooooh hand-holding's pretty serious!"
David is too pure.
David: [dreamily] "Did you fall in love, Spencer? A summer love?" [puts hands up to his face]
Then there's the fact that David/Miles gets to pick where they play each round, and he keeps insisting on going to the one called "Survey Camp" every single time because it has the word "camp" in it.
David: "Now, I don't like to disagree, but . . . I was thinking we could go . . . to Survey Camp!"
Spencer reminds him that technically since David's the one with the power to choose, his opinion is the only one that matters:
David: "Everyone's opinion matters. And my opinion is we're going to camp."
David just steamrolling over Spencer's interests is very good. There are these little selfish nuggets sprinkled in among the wholesomeness that really capture the full David experience.
David: "Well, he's climbing up . . . he's coming my direction . . . oh, he looks scary . . ."
Spencer: "Is he coming towards me?"
David: "Oooh, I don't know. I'm dead!"
The positivity is relentless. I think Miles said on twitter afterwards that this whole thing was exhausting and I can see why. Being David is no picnic . . .
David: "I have a question: do we have to shoot each other in this game?"
And then a few seconds later:
David: "I'm just wondering if maybe there's a way we can, you know, help others. Talk through our issues."
And a few seconds after that:
David: "I was asking if they wanted to be friends in the game!"
I believe that moved killed him, too. Precious.
Also we're interrupting the real Miles!David content to share something my friend suggested to me while I was watching this and giving her quotes; she said that maybe David just calls everything camp to make life more fun, and then sent me this imaginary exchange that actually killed me all the way to death:
David: Gwen Santos would you go to marriage camp with me
Gwen: I'm going to have to change this story when I tell everyone
It made me laugh quite a bit.
Anyway, back to the video!
Spencer: "How do you sign up for [Camp Campbell]?"
David: "Well, um, you can fax, uh, an application to [email protected]. And . . . you can know that myself and Gwen and Quartermaster and sometimes Mr. Campbell will do our best to make sure they get what they need! Which more than anything is love and support. And friendship."
Spencer: "How many dollars does this camp cost?"
David: "You know . . . it is, um . . ."
And then the conversation switches subjects and David breathes a sigh of relief.
Very shortly after this he changed his character from a woman (she was wearing a yellow shirt, which he liked because the campers wear yellow shirts) to "a Forward Scout with a positive attitude!"
Tumblr media
"I like his style."
Spencer: "Does everybody abuse David verbally?"
David: "You know, sometimes people have harsh words. Mostly Max, and Neil, and Gwen, and Quartermaster, and Nurf."
Spencer: "Did you just list almost everyone?"
David: "Mmm . . . I'd say maybe a third."
Poor David. Somebody please protect him.
Spencer: "Yeah, I think people abuse David. I get that vibe. Or at least, I feel it in my heart. Like I wanna put ants in your bunk or something."
David: "Well, I think that says more about maybe some of the hurt you're carrying with you. And sometimes when people don't know how to process that, they act out. Do you want some trail mix?"
David just said his favorite part of trail mix is the raisins which is so cute. "They have a little bit of salt on them, which isn't typical for a raisin."
And he keeps telling chatters to watch their language.
David: "Who is my favorite camper? Aww, you know I couldn't pick a favorite! . . . But I know who has the most potential, even if he doesn't want to admit it."
I KNEW IT!!!!!
I've been saying for years that David doesn't have a favorite and gravitates towards the ones he thinks need him the most AND I FINALLY GOT ONE RIGHT!
Tumblr media
David: "Well you know, Gwen swears and that's okay."
shipping intensifies
David: [gasp] "The moss is growing on the north side of the rock!"
Every time he nerds out about weird shit in the game I gain 3 seconds to my life.
Spencer: "Did you get teabagged?"
David: "What's that?"
Spencer: "It's where somebody places their most intimate bits on you for . . . friendship."
David: [softly] "Oh, I don't know about that."
Also David confirms that the whole show has been a single summer, so please see the "vindication" gif above.
David: "I know a lot of fun camp songs."
Spencer: "Sing 3."
David: [starts singing] "Bum-bum-bumblebee, bumblebee tuna, I love bumblebee, bumblebee tuna . . ."
Spencer: "Okay, please stop. I immediately regret this decision."
David: "Max said the same thing! One of my campers. And, uh, and my co-counselor, Gwen."
He's literally made of sunshine. I would die for this fictional man.
Spencer: "Are people at camp against their will? I feel like they are."
David: "No! . . . They don't always like it immediately, but it grows on them."
Spencer: "It sounds like they're there against their will."
David: "Well I just think that's a negative way of looking at it."
FWIW Spencer makes an excellent foil to David. Not as aggressive as Max or as dour as Gwen, but he brings a very . . . like, straight-man energy to the conversation. Like how a normal person would react to David IRL. I'd enjoy seeing these two interact more.
Spencer: "It's like your overpositivity is wanting me to balance it out with negativity."
David: "You know, I feel like that dynamic's pretty popular with me."
eeeeeeee <3
And the last one that I personally found noteworthy:
David: "One day we'll be able to afford safety equipment. Until then, we'll just have to deal with Quartermaster's Ropes Course. And a lot of pillows."
There's point near the last 20 minutes where either it got kinda boring or I just got too tired to keep track. But if there are any quotes you think I missed, please share them! This was a really lovely bit of content to feed our starving maw, and I appreciate Miles very very very much for taking one for the team.

and at last, the post that maybe three people maximum have been waiting for...
em's comfort retro rally videos: a masterlist!
in a much-needed return to this blog's roots, and as an antidote to all motorsport- and life-related chaos, i now present to you: the first edition of em's favorite retro rally videos!
general disclaimer/info: these videos mainly come from the group B era of the world rally championship (wrc), which generally speaking was in the '80s. i am only human, so expect a lot of bias toward my personal favorites...which will become very apparent as you read this list hehe. also i'm not even gonna pretend to be an expert on this or anything. a lot of these are literally just based on Vibes
table of contents
i. my top 5 rally coverage videos
mainly coverage for television, recorded on VHS and uploaded to YouTube by some truly incredible people
ii. honorable mentions
not rally coverage, but retro rally videos nevertheless
often documentaries, mini-doc features, interviews
for all videos, i have indicated the language (most are in english fyi); if any links fail or videos disappear, send me an ask or DM and i'll remove the culprit/find an alternative link.
and now, onward!
(TW for occasional flash photography in many of the night sequences of the videos, as well as a gif included in this post)
i. my top 5 rally coverage videos
in which my bias toward audi sport, mouton/pons, mikkola, toivonen, and vatanen are put on blast for all to see 🥴 i am not an expert in anything i am just very good at research and a whore for aud—[SNIPED]. for the sake of brevity, i narrowed my favorites down to 5. maybe another time i will share all the rest!
also, a general note about the commentary: sometimes, the commentary around michèle and fabrizia can get... weird. keep in mind, they were the most prominent female team partnership around that time, and the first to nearly clinch a wrc wdc, and to modern ears, the commentators really didn't know how to act around them. personally, it wasn't horrible for me, i just ignored the weirder bits, but i understand if others might find it off-putting. also for the sake of your sanity don't read the comments.
5. Rally of the 1000 Lakes, 1984 | finland
link: overall coverage (eng)
podium: vatanen/alén/toivonen (full final results)
comments: this was definitely a rally for most of audi sport's drivers to forget: bar stig blomqvist, who came quite close to the podium finishers with a 4:14:01 to henri toivonen's 4:12:57! both hannu mikkola and michèle mouton had to retire from the race, which may lead you to wonder: why does this rank among my favorites? well, it's always fun to watch group b rally cars sailing through the air against picturesque scenery, and this video also contains an intriguing (at least for me!) look at the scrutineering process, with drivers at their most casual.
Tumblr media
owie :( they were fine though!
4. Lombard RAC Rally, 1981 | britain
link: overall coverage (eng)
podium: mikkola/vatanen/blomqvist (full final results)
comments: hannu winning by 11 whole minutes even after rolling his car in the middle of the forest is actual legend behavior! anyway this was michèle's first wrc outing in britain, and even though she and fabrizia had to retire, they still did quite well, consistently running high in the leaderboards after the first few stages. and that's considering the fact that michèle had a bad cold for much of the rally and had to ask fabrizia to drive the car to service park for her at one point bc she was so tired. which fabrizia did... with a pencil in her mouth. lot of big names in one video—also, jean todt makes an appearance as a co-driver!
Tumblr media
shamelessly poached off of one of my text post edits
3. Marlboro Safari Rally, 1983 | kenya
link: overall coverage (eng)
podium: vatanen/mikkola/mouton (full final results)
comments: ok can i just say how stunning the video presentation is?? the opening sequence is just!!! the shots of the wildlife! the sprinting giraffes! wow! anyway the visual of drivers in deck chairs just tickles me for no reason, and michèle please tell me what you ask for at the hairdresser's and also where you got that orange blouse (this is obviously not just specific to this rally, she always eats and leaves no crumbs). this was michèle's first entry and only finish in kenya (and of course it was a podium mwah). it was also her last wrc entry in the A1 quattro, as she switched to the A2 for the rest of her program in the '83 season. also this is one of my favorite podium pictures ever.
Tumblr media
lksdjffnnkd there's almost too much to unpack... fabrizia somehow surviving in high waist jeans in a hot car... michèle's do-it-yourself shorts... this podium picture was the subject of a very frantic video chat conversation between myself and a friend at 2am a few months ago
2. Rallye de Portugal, 1982 | portugal
links: short recap (eng) | overall coverage 1, stuck in the middle of two other rallies. timestamps in descrip. (eng) | overall coverage 2, very vibey with cool music (ita... also peep walter röhrl speaking italian)
podium: mouton/eklund/wittmann (full final results)
comments: GOD I LOVE THIS ONE SO MUCH AAAA! michèle's first podium of '82 being a win? this rally being the one where there's footage of her going shopping with fabrizia afterward? (more on that later) them winning by 13 whole minutes? and that's not even considering THEE most poetic victory ceremony of all time! in fact let me talk about that bc the racing and the win aside, that's why it's so high up on my list! literally poetic cinema! it's night, they're standing on top of the car and floodlit and surrounded by cheering crowds but they may as well be the only ones there in their own little world, laughing at each other and barely even having to look to each other when they're raising their hands—like god! shut up! we get it you're besties 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i_just_think_theyre_neat.png
and now... last but certainly never least...
1. Lombard RAC Rally, 1982 | britain
link: overall coverage (eng)
podium: mikkola/mouton/toivonen (full final results)
comments: firstly, if you were to ask me about my dream podium, this would be it. hands down, across all series of motorsport, my comfort podium would be hannu, michèle, and henri in any order. (there's such a cute picture of them from this rally on pinterest, standing in order on a staircase. henri is not looking at the camera because he is laughing at something michèle is saying and it's such a Vibe but i cannot find it wah). the battle for second between michèle and henri ran down to literally the last stage, and their times are separated by seconds, which is just wild to me. the context of this rally deserves another post, which i honestly don’t have the energy to make rn, but just take my word for it that it threatens to destroy me if i think about it too hard! anyway this is just such an awesome rally and i’ve watched this video so many times haha
Tumblr media
i love this rally so much that i actually had a character in a story i was writing attend the ceremony captured in this picture as a small child and made it a formative moment in her life. no, there is nothing wrong with me.
ii. honorable mentions
(is it obvious who my faves are? yikes)
'Group B - Avec Michele Mouton' (eng) - taken from a longer feature presentation about group b, a segment specifically about michèle. a friend once described its vibes as ‘a synth wave edit of an 80s anime set in a cyberpunk world about racing’
'1983 Audi Sport National Rally with Michele Mouton' (eng) - in which michèle takes journalist sue baker as a co-driver for a spin in an A1 and a rally win. fun behind-the-scenes video
'Intervista a Fabrizia Pons, la Regina delle Note' 1, 2, 3 (ita) - very thorough interview which is mostly fabrizia telling all sorts of stories, including the very entertaining story of how she found out she was going to be michèle’s co-driver. also what a badass title
'2008 Otago International Classic Rally' (eng) - THE BESTIES REUNITE THE BESTIES REUNITE!!! michèle and fabrizia reunite for a rally that fabrizia convinced michèle to join, they suffer some problems but there are plenty of wholesome bestie moments to be had
'Michele Mouton hurls Group B Audi Quattro up Goodwood hill' (eng) - i mean, self explanatory. the sound of the chirping tires? asmr could never. very short watch if you want a quick pick-me-up
'1990 Louise Aitken-Walker feature' (eng) - a video featuring a female rally driver from scotland and her point-scoring run at the rallye monte -carlo. i am convinced that louise was john finnemore’s inspiration or at least an influence for the character of linda fairbairn. no my hat is not made of tin foil what are you talking about
hannu rocketing around michigan back in 2017 (eng)
hannu flying around goodwood in 2015 (eng)
sometimes i listen to fabrizia's recent onboards (yes, she's still at it!) and this one is one of my favorites, from 2016 (ita)

Request Spyro, the best dragon around (maybe look at both Reignted and Legend's design? Not Skylanders though, it sucks!)
This is probably gonna be my most difficult review yet, but here we go!
Tumblr media
Spyro!!!!! The dragon!!!
So, Spyro started out way back in 1998, which is an important fact to understand with regard to a lot of Spyro’s general vibes. The 90s introduced Sonic the Hedgehog, who was wildly popular and completely changed the character design landscape for the decade – with numerous animals-with-attitude following on his heels due to his immense popularity. 90s gaming was heavily defined by platformers starring these characters, though most of them died out soon after their introduction, failing to achieve the recognition and success of their predecessor. Spyro, however, achieved an immense degree of success and became the functional mascot of Sony’s Playstation, a mantle he shared with Crash Bandicoot.
Tumblr media
As a product of the 90s, Spyro carries many of its hallmarks. Young and rebellious, he has that playful bit of edge that defined so many of his contemporaries. As a design, he’s pretty straightforward: a small purple dragon. But his personality shines through with his expressive face, and there really aren’t actually a lot of dragons I can think of that look like him! It’s worth noting he was apparently going to be green early in development, but purple was chosen instead so he would stand out against grass. This was an integral decision, as Spyro’s colour is probably what makes him most iconic. Gameplay-wise, his most distinctive ability was using his wings to glide, in addition to the unsurprising ability to breathe fire.
Tumblr media
Spyro’s design stayed pretty consistent for awhile, with just subtle differences like the addition of purple irises in A Hero’s Tail. But unfortunately, even Spyro couldn’t withstand the inevitable fate of the 90s animal mascot in the long term. After the original trilogy, his games fell in popularity and perceived quality, and 2006 saw an attempt at a modern reimagining of the character in the form of a reboot series known as The Legend of Spyro. This iteration featured a more realistic design, with his 90s attitude toned down a bit, but like many reboots of 90s franchises he couldn’t help but feel out of place in the gaming landscape. Simultaneously trying to balance his original concept with a desire to appear more tonally mature, The Legend of Spyro just felt….odd. But as a design, Spyro looked decent here. The added details maybe a little unnecessary, and the Dreamworks face a bit cheesy, but overall solid.
Tumblr media
The third game in the series actually skipped forward a couple years, giving us the older-looking Spyro seen here! It’s a competent design for an older Spyro, but making Spyro older is something of a questionable decision in itself. It just feels kind of uncanny, and seemingly misses the original spirit of the character. It’s just taking itself a bit too seriously, y’know? But I guess that’s all appropriate for an awkward teen. Also worth noting is that multiple breath weapons besides fire became standard in this series, with Spyro being able to breathe all of them due to his status as a rare purple dragon. Spyro could breathe other things in prior games as well, but it didn’t really have the narrative importance that it does here.
Tumblr media
After a period of silence until 2011, the Skylanders franchise surfaced. The first game started development as yet another reboot of the Spyro universe, initially even grimmer in tone than The Legend of Spyro, before reeling itself in and opting for the much friendlier Skylanders franchise we know. It also adopted a toys-to-life concept, with figures you could buy of characters to play as in the game, and it was a breakout success. In the end, though, Spyro was more or less just used as a recogniseable name to help the new franchise get a foothold in gaming consciousness. As the series went on, Spyro was ultimately sidelined and not much more important than any other Skylanders character.
Tumblr media
The real elephant in the room here though is how utterly atrocious Spyro’s Skylanders design is. This here was the first screenshot publicly shown, and to say people were livid would be a severe understatement. He looks like he’s been selectively bred for several decades to create the draconic equivalent to a pug. His scales are also way too defined, and his eyes are distressingly bulbous. People hated this design, and they still do. There’s really no defending it! The Skylanders Academy animated series helps to sand it down a bit into something less revolting, but how the base design got approved is beyond my comprehension.
Tumblr media
Anyways, come 2018, and we’d get the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. A remaster of the first three games, this brought back Spyro’s original design, and it looks fantastic. It perfectly captures Spyro’s original personality without overdoing it, and streamlines the details to look good in HD without being too texture-heavy. Although heavy pseudo-eyebrows can be very hit-or-miss with designs, they actually work marvellously here and do a lot to help frame Spyro’s face and expressions.
Tumblr media
The Reignited Trilogy is probably the most-respected Spyro’s been since his inception, and the design is easily my favourite of the bunch. As a whole, though, Spyro’s been through a lot. It’s interesting to see all the ups and downs a single character can go through, whilst still retaining the same basic premise: purple dragon with an attitude. But yeah. Spyro’s a good boy and I like him quite a lot.
14,000 gems/10.

A3! Translation: Muku Sakisaka’s SSR [Mankai Glitter] - To Virgo: Muku
Tumblr media
translation under the cut.
Muku: For this part, you've gotta do it like this…
...And done! I've finished making the cat doll!
Omi: Oh, it's come out pretty well. You've improved quite a lot on making a felt doll, Muku.
Muku: It's all thanks to your teaching, Omi-san. Besides, I'm still far from good…
But I want to be as good as you and Yuki-kun.
Omi: Hey, you're fine, all right? But hmm, so you want to become better at this, huh…
That's right. I know a handicraft cafe that can help you improve your skills in a relaxed way. Are you interested?
Muku: A handicraft cafe, you say!? That sounds really fun!
Omi: Why don't you invite all the Summer Troupe guys to go with you? You can make matching things there, after all.
Muku: Together with my Summer Troupe mates… Now that you mention it…
Since my birthday is fast approaching, they told me to think of a place that I want to go with them all.
I've decided where to go now! Thank you, Omi-san.
Omi: Haha, glad to hear that. Have fun there.
Muku: Yup!
I need to think of a wish after that…
Omi: A wish?
Muku: The one that we asked to the "Hello, Celestial Sphere."
Omi: Sorry, but… what's "Hello, Celestial Sphere"?
Muku: It's one of the troupe's urban legends that Kazu-kun and Misumi-san found in the warehouse.
If you wish for something to your constellation during your birthday month, it's said that your wish will come true for a day.
Omi: Heh, I didn't know there's such a thing.
Muku: I heard the old members used this as one of their party goods, so we decided to use that during our birthday parties as well.
It's sort of become the Summer Troupe's tradition to use this thing.
...Did Banri-san not tell you, though? I assumed all troupe leaders know about this…
Omi: Nope, he didn't tell me anything. But well, I feel like he's gonna tell us when the time comes.
Hello, Celestial Sphere, huh… I hope you can come up with something good.
Muku: Yup!
***
Muku: Thank you for clearing your schedules for today, guys.
Kazunari: No biggie~! We're gonna celebrate our beloved Mukkun's birthday, after all!
Kumon: Let's celebrate your birthday splendidly!
Izumi: Is it really okay for me to tag along, though?
Muku: Totally! Rather, I'm happy that you come along with us, Director-san.
Yuki: So where do you wanna go?
Muku: You'll know once we arrive there. Let's go!
Tumblr media
Tenma: Handicraft cafe, huh?
Yuki: The interior is cute.
Kumon: Wow! We can make things like dolls and the likes here, right!?
Misumi: Sounds fun~!
Izumi: Ah, I've come here with Omi-kun before…!
Muku: Oh, really? To tell you the truth, Omi-san was the one who told me about this place.
I heard you can both improve your skill and have fun here, so I want to come here with the rest of Summer Troupe.
Kazunari: Since this is a cafe, they should have cakes and teas here.
Tenma: Yeah, let's order something before we do the handicraft. Here, the menu.
Misumi: Yup! We're here to celebrate Muku's birthday after all~!
Kumon: IKR!
Muku: You guys… Thanks!
***
Kazunari: Our orders are all here, rite? With that said…
Mukkun, happy birthday!
Summer Troupe: Happy birthday!!
Muku: Thanks! Ehehe. This made me happy…
I love acting with you all, hanging out with you all, and spending time together like this.
Thank you for everything. Let's stay good friends.
Misumi: I love spending time with you too~!
Kazunari: Same! I really, really, really love it!
Tenma: Let's keep doing our best together.
Izumi: (The Summer Troupe members sure are close with each other, huh. Muku-kun also looks really happy.)
***
Kazunari: Alrighty! Now that we've enjoyed the tasty cakes, it's time to make the felted dolls!
Yuki: Do you have any things you wanna make?
Muku: I want to make matching items with you all.
Misumi: Whoa, I like that idea~!
Kazunari: Ah! How about we make a rival for William!? We'd have six in total then!
Kumon: That means we'll make them battle over William's girlfriend Mari?
Muku: What!? But both of them already have a happy ending during the puppet show the other day. Making a rival would be kinda…
But love comes with many challenges…
Six powerful and charming rivals are appearing before William… However, later on, they all will become the best of friends.
Tenma: You're gonna make the story be more complicated at this rate, y'know.
Izumi: Fufu. I think it's a great story, though.
Yuki: Well, putting the rivals aside, it'd be nice to make something with the same size.
Kumon: Yup! Okay, let's go ahead and make it~!
Misumi: Yup~!
Waiter: Here are the kits that we have prepared. Please choose what you like. For those who have gotten used to this, naturally, you are allowed to make some arrangements.
Tenma: Which one should I choose?
Kazunari: Prick this one, and then…
Muku: I think it goes like this...
Kumon: This is so hard!
Misumi: What should I do, after this, Yuki~?
Yuki: This one goes like this. Then, for this part…
Izumi: (Despite struggling at some parts, they all look like they're having fun.)
***
Misumi: It's done!
Tenma: Alright, me too.
Kazunari: Good job! With that, now it's all done!
Izumi: Whoa, they're all cute! You guys went with different animals, huh.
Kumon: It was hard yet so fun~!
Muku: Right? I had a lot of fun too.
Yuki: Since they're all from the series, it's become a matching set. Isn't that great?
Kazunari: It's very cwute! If you line them up like this, we can see our own personalities in them!
Muku: Fufu, you're right.
OPTION 1: Your rabbit is adorable, Muku-kun.
Izumi: Your rabbit is adorable, Muku-kun. You're really good at this, huh.
Muku: You think so? Ehehe… Thank you.
Yuki: Yeah, I also think you did great. You paid attention to the details.
Misumi: The rabbit looks like Muku somehow~. It's fluffy and smiling so gently.
Kumon: I think so too!
Tenma: It does look like Muku.
Kazunari: Down to your healing vibes too!
Izumi: You're right.
Muku: R-Really? This kinda makes me shy, but… I'm happy.
OPTION 2: I tried making this, you see.
Izumi: I tried making this, you see.
Muku: Ah, a cake! Whoa, it's so cute…!
Izumi: I found this sweet series among the kits, so I decided to choose this. It's perfect for Muku-kun's birthday.
Kazunari: Oh, yeah! Hey, let's line up our animals together and put Director-chan's cake in the middle~.
Muku: Whoa…!
Misumi: It looks like the animals are celebrating Muku's birthday too~!
Kazunari: IKR!? It's very cwute~! I've gotta take a snap and post it on the blog! Captured!
Muku: So happy~. I'll print this picture and put it in the room.
Kazunari: Sounds great! Let's write some birthday wishes too after this, guys! I'll send the photo to y'all!
***
Kazunari: Once we're home, let's take a photo of them with William!
But hey, you see, I've actually come up with this idea when making these dolls. Say, don't you think having all 24 of us William's rivals is interesting!?
Kumon: A 24-way relationship!?
Izumi: If we include William, then 25…?
Tenma: That's too many!
Muku: Whoa…! I think I've read a shoujo manga with that kind of story before!
Yuki: 24-way relationship?
Muku: Yup! The boys are competing for one girl's heart!
Each of the boys have different personalities, and the one who is chosen by the heroine is beyond our expectations…!
Misumi: Is that so~?
Muku: I'm sure it'll be great if our company members reenact that manga and become the heroes…
Yuki: Well, there are also some of us who don't look like the type to date, though.
Kumon: Ah! Speaking of, Muku, have you decided on your wish to the Celestial Sphere?
Muku: Celestial Sphere…
That's it! I've decided on my wish!
Yuki: I feel like I know what it is.
Misumi: What is your wish~?
Muku: Umm…
Tenma: You've brought the Celestial Sphere, huh.
Kazunari: Oooh! Kumon also did this before. That's our cousins for ya!
Izumi: Feel free to say your wish, Muku-kun.
Muku: Yeah!
Hello, Lord Virgo…
I want our company members to reenact "Honey Concerto in Love!"
Tumblr media
Muku: Nnggh….
(Hm…? I feel like someone is staring at me…)
Kazunari: Good morning, Mukumi. Seeing your face first thing in the morning is truly the happiest moment in my life.
Even your sleeping face is really cute today☆
Muku: ...Ka-Kazu-kun?
Kazunari: What is it? By the way, you look so cute even when spacing out… haaah, your beauty is truly a sin, Mukumi.
Muku: (Mukumi? Is he talking about me…?)
(While I do wish to have everyone reenact my favorite shoujo manga, I don't mean it like this…)
Kazunari: Come on, it's time for breakfast. Let's go, my sweet roommate☆
Muku: Y-Yeah.
***
Muku: Morning.
Yuki: Morning, Mukumi. Did you sleep well?
Misumi: Goodness. Do you have to be that cute from early in the morning, honey?
Tenma: Well now, let's begin our "Morning Appeal Time" to Mukumi.
Muku: Appeal Time!?
Misumi: I'm going first, then.
Take this, my triangle present for today. I also include my love for you.
Muku: Thank, Thank you…
Kazunari: You like this better, right, Mukumi?
This bittersweetness of citrus… reminds me of our heart-thumping meeting in that certain country.
Muku: U-Uh… I met Kazu-kun during the Summer Troupe audition, though.
Yuki: Mukumi, I saw you in my dream last night. To think that you even visited my dream…
You sure can't stand being alone, huh. You really are adorable, my angel.
Kumon: Nice weather today, huh….During summer like this, the sun is shining as bright as you.
You make my heart heat up so much I feel like it's burning… you know?
Tenma: A day like this makes me want to go to a private beach with you. Say, baby, let's have a samba dance as we match our passionate rhythm with each other.
Muku: (Whoaaa, I knew it! I'm the heroine!)
(Now that I think about it again, there's a scene like this in the manga…)
Tenma: Alright, now that the Appeal Time is over, let's have breakfast. Sit beside me, Mukumi.
Muku: Huh? Oh, okay--.
Banri: Hey, watta minute.
Juza: You're the one who should wait.
Muku: Ba, Banri-san…!? Even Juchan…!
Banri: Mukumi will sit beside me, of course. Right, Mukumi?
Juza: The heck? Since when did we ever decide on that, bastard? Come sit next to me, Mukumi.
Muku: Whoa, whoa, whoa…
Banri: Tch… Look, bastard, you made Mukumi troubled. Guess it's faster to just ask the person in question right away.
Juza: Yeah. Mukumi, who do you choose? ***
Muku: Huh!? Ummm…!
I-I'm sorry!!
Banri and Juza: Mukumi!
Muku: (I should have made my wish pretty clear and asked the Celestial Sphere to turn Director-san into the heroine...)
***
Muku: ...Ah!!
Huh…?
It, It was… a dream….
(That dream felt very real, though. It was a little bit different from what I hoped for, but the Celestial Sphere still made my wish come true…)
Kazunari: Mukkun?
Muku: Ka-Kazu-kun…
Kazunari: Morning! What's wrong, though? Jumping out of bed like that.
Muku: (Thank goodness. It's the usual Kazu-kun…)
It's nothing. Morning, Kazu-kun.

***Best of the 1st Half of 2021: SONG EDITION***
Six months into 2021 and since 2020 wrapped up...some things in the world have changed, while other things remain the same (for better or worse). Folks, it’s time to talk about rap music in 2021...
Tumblr media
One trend definitely has continued well into 2021: the underground rap world - I’m talking the artists, the aesthetic, the sound, the full projects, every box you can think of - continues to kick the mainstream rap world’s ass. There are already signs of the two imaginary separate worlds intermingling more and more, and we will have to deal with the pros and cons of that down the line...but one thing is for sure: rap music runs deeper, and more sonically diverse than ever before, and as long as there is an internet to enlist the ears and talents of artists from all over the world, the art form will continue to divide, change shape, borrow from the old and add some new, again and again. And we will all be better for it.
So let’s dive right in. As usual there are about 1,000 more songs that I would love to cram into this list, but there are only so many spots...and I’m married with a toddler, so even though I am listening to rap music for a concerningly large portion of my day, it takes a lot of extra coffee and less sleep to keep these posts going (but it’s still worth it, I love connecting with folks over the same under-discussed but ridiculously dope songs and artists).
There are many lists but none quite like this one, here is THE RAP PUNDIT’S LIST OF THE BEST RAP SONGS FROM THE FIRST HALF OF 2021....hope you find some joints you never heard before and really enjoy.  And to all of the MCs, Producers, mixers, singers, curators, readers, writers, critics - anyone that contributes something to this music I love....thank you, as always. 🙏
[Bonus joint] 55. “GANG GANG” - Polo G feat. Lil Wayne
https://soundcloud.com/polo-g/polo-g-lil-wayne-gang-gang?in=polo-g/sets/hall-of-fame-675200176
[Bonus joint] 54. “Furious Styles” - Illa Styles feat. Nickelus F https://illastyles.bandcamp.com/track/furious-styles-ft-nickelus-f
[Bonus joint] 53. “Box of Churches” - Pooh Sheisty feat. 21 Savage
https://soundcloud.com/ceo-mrpooh/box-of-churches-feat-21-savage
[Bonus joint] 52. “Beating Down Yo Block” - Monaleo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnMPEfV0bSA
[Bonus joint] 51. “BUZZERBEATER” - Rahiem Supreme feat. Al.Divino & Estee Nack
https://franksvinylrecords.bandcamp.com/track/buzzerbeater-feat-al-divino-estee-nack
50. "A Man Apart” - Rx Papi
https://soundcloud.com/rxpapi/a-man-apart-prod-by-noisy?in=rxpapi/sets/100-miles-walkin
(Face it: you’re either feelin’ the Rx flow or you’re not. The endlessly quotable MC is not always taken seriously, but similar to how the saddest clowns are most adept at masking their pain behind a smile, Papi needs to be taken seriously as a talented rap artist.)
49. “Moving On Up” - Evidence feat. Conway The Machine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F35OOXvQ4c
(Evidence, Babu, Daringer and Conway all joining forces on a record feels like a timeline altering reach between two completely different generations of elite underground hip-hop artists, but in the case of “Moving On Up”, it’s not just a “hey wouldn’t it be dope if” fantasy, it’s a sweet reality. Ev has connected with the Griselda camp before and of course the results are dope. Add this one to the list, one of the many fine moments off of Unlearning Vol. 1.)
48. “Gordon Ramsay Freestyle” - Remble
https://soundcloud.com/remble2/gordon-ramsay-freestyle-prod-by-laudiano
(An attention grabbing MC if ever I heard one, Remble clearly hails from the same camp as Drakeo The Ruler - Stinc Team - but with that flow and sense of humor, he may develop a lot more than just a strong following out on the West Coast. Look out for Remble, he is knocking on the door of blowing, he’s just one key feature away...)
47. “The Shifts” - maassai feat. AKAI SOLO
https://maassai.bandcamp.com/track/the-shifts-feat-akai-solo
(If you haven’t checked out one of 2021′s most quietly impressive albums, I cannot recommend With The Shifts enough.)
46. “BOXINABACK” - Bris feat. Alphie Blood
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3ai7WYivGo
(The career of Sacramento’s Bris was really beginning to pick up momentum in 2020...sadly, he was killed the same year. I cannot pretend to be an expert in the Sscramento rap scene, I just know that it’s been bubbling for a while, and this song really captured my attention as soon as I heard it. RIP, Bris.)
45. “Last Day Out” - Rio Da Yung OG
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB51CUUod1w
(Right before Rio Da Yung OG entered the penitentiary, he dropped “Last Day Out”, a song that perfectly captures what the rap game will be missing while he’s gone - and more brutal honesty than we are accustomed to hearing from Flint, Michigan’s punchline killer.)
44. “Thousand Miles” - MAVI
https://mavi.bandcamp.com/track/thousand-miles
(The whole EP is impressive, but I think this joint most actually captures MAVI’s rhyme skills, flow and song writing ability. With young talent like this bubbling up from the underground scene, the future of rap music is as strong as ever.)
43. “Appletree” - Valee & KiltKarter
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPO2AXgZMSc
(Not necessarily a vibe that everyone will be into...but one that if you are into it, you will reap the rewards in abundance. It’s so enjoyable to hear Valee applying his unpredictable cadence to new music once again, made that much more enjoyable by the fact that he has already dropped THREE mixtapes in 2021 and it’s only July!)
42. “Next Chamber” - Peter Rosenberg feat. Method Man, Raekwon & Willie The Kid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1amHQefki98
(Admit it: this is the type of production we have all been wanting on Wu-Tang albums for years. We won’t get it, but this is closer to the sound that they represented....and of course let’s not forget about the always welcome WTK feature, who does more than hold his own over the NY legends.)
41. “St. James Liquor” - Skyzoo feat. Aaria
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWC_tFzqUz8
(Pen game’s don’t come much finer than Skyzoo’s. The Brooklyn MC put a lot of work into All The Brilliant Things, and the final result was a collection of thoughtful rap songs like this one: descriptive, autobiographical rhymes over beautiful instrumentation that conjures memories of classic Roots records, and the headspace that only the greatest early 90′s East Coast lyricism could provide. Great song, great album.)
40. “10″ - Drakeo the Ruler
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIRJoQFyS6c
(One of the best stories in 2020 rap music was when Drakeo hit the street once again, after a painfully long stretch of time in prison. He really hit the ground running in 2021, dropping one quality track after another...but then again, he never really stopped making dope rap in the first place, be it in the studio or over prison phone.)
39. “MASSA” - Tyler, The Creator feat. DJ Drama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vGz0bFutZs
(When folks were saying that Tyler was RAPPING rapping on his new album, this is what they were talking about. Not since Kanye West has a polarizing rapper-producer excelled so well at spilling his guts all over a track, and moments like this "MASSA” make Call Me If You Get Lost the standout project that it is.)
38. "DARTGUNZ” - Chuck Strangers
https://soundcloud.com/chuckstrangers/dartgunz-produced-by-samiyam
(Chuck Strangers remains low-key one of the best MC / Producers in the game, but Chuck is merely flexing his bar-work on this Samiyam produced gem.)
37. “Messy” - Nappy Nina & JWords
https://nappynina.bandcamp.com/track/messy
(Big shout-out to Pitchfork for putting me on to Nappy Nina within their rap song of the day section, The Ones. I love her music, and when paired with the incredibly gifted producer JWords - who I was only somewhat familar with thanks to previous terrific collaborations with MIKE and maassai - the result is a dope ass album like Double Down.)
36. “Nobles” - The Alchemist feat. Earl Sweatshirt & Navy Blue
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQoKO_v93g0
(The instrumental sounds as a triumphant as you could expect music from this trio to sound. My only complaint about This Things Of Ours was that it wasn’t 10-50 songs longer.)
35. “Nothing Like The Sun” - Tree feat. Roc Marciano
https://mctreeg.bandcamp.com/track/nothing-like-the-sun-feat-roc-marciano
(Okay so for the past few years, I had been pressing Tree, Closed Sessions, and just about anyone that would listen that a less than a minute clip from an old Tree promo featured an unreleased Tree & Roc Marciano joint. So finding out that this joint would *finally* being released on Tree’s Soul Trap album, it felt like Christmas morning. Now the world finally gets to hear two of the finest rap artists from the past decade plus!)
34. “nine lives” - maassai
https://maassai.bandcamp.com/track/nine-lives
(A great example of a song that seems to get better and better as it goes on, maassai & that horn sample are undeniably good on here.)
33. “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” - Drake feat. Rick Ross
https://soundcloud.com/octobersveryown/drake-lemon-pepper-freestyle?in=octobersveryown/sets/scary-hours-2-1
(This one really radiates, “YES, you have heard this before”...but when it works so well, that’s not such a bad thing. Drake came ready to rap, and it will propel this joint to the top of many lists you will find on those other web sites.)
32. “triboro.” - Remy Banks feat. Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire, Wiki & A-Trak
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwSJ-DtZRBk
(I dig this in a big way. A few of NYC’s finest, flexing over what feels like blasting Kraftwerk out of a boombox on the L Train? I’m so on board.)
31. “Safe To Say” - Good Gas, Fki 1st & Band Gang Lonnie Bands feat. Band Gang Biggs & Glockboyz Teejaee
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aykhcv625u0
(Of all my favorite projects that dropped in 2021 thus far, I don’t know if any have been as inexplicably under-discussed as the Good Gas, Fki 1st & Band Gang Lonnie Bands banger, Street Dream Team. I stumbled upon the project completely by accident one week while thumbing through all of the new joints that dropped from Detroit MCs one week, and I have kept it in heavy rotation ever sense. While not necessarily a spot-on snapshot of Band Gang Lonnie Bands’ typical sound, for a Michigan outsider like me, it makes for a great entry level intro to one of my favorite rappers out of the Motor City right now.)
30. "Early Exit” - Lloyd Banks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BUofKVrb-A
(Yeah the Roc Marciano verse sounds like it was recorded over an old radio on cassette tape, but as someone from the real mixtape era, I’m not going to let shaky sound quality distract from the fact that every other part of the song is fantastic. The bars are there of course, but the beat and hook are all spot-on, and sound quality be damed it’s just great to hear Banks & Roc together.)
29. "Yonkers” - Wiki & NAH
https://wiksetnyc.bandcamp.com/track/yonkers
(Rife with experimentation and half-freestyles, and sonically living somewhere between Company Flow and Ratking, the subterranean metro sounds of Wiki and NAH’s Telephonebooth might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you have been checking for Wiki’s music prior to this point, chances are you are going to be feeling this collaboration with NAH, a producer that I was previously not familiar with, but became a huge fan over night thanks to cuts like “Yonkers”.)
28. “John Wick” - AKAI SOLO & Navy Blue
(Whether you still believe “lo-fi” rap is a legitimate sub-genre or not, there’s no denying the abilities of these two gifted writers/artists. The wind is blowing in this direction my friends, I just hope you get on board soon and stop neglecting all of the great rap music rising from this corner of the underground.)
https://akaisolo.bandcamp.com/track/john-wick-prod-navy-blue
27. “Let It Roll Interlude” by IAMNOBODI feat. Phonte & BeMyFiasco
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVA1hXEnwnE
(Hard to believe that arguably the strongest rap verse of 2021 would be so under the radar, but here we are...)
26. "Taylor Made Suit” - Evidence
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qLIuc3z7KQ
(Perhaps the thing I love most about this new Ev - both the song itself, as well as the entire album - is how incredibly effective he sounds over minimalist production throughout. “Funeral suit, same as my wedding suit”...shout-out to the legendary MC and producer, both for everything that has has endured in his personal life and his ability to turn his pain into art.)
25. “GOOFIEZ” - Mother Nature and Boathouse feat. Valee
https://mothernaturebarz.bandcamp.com/track/goofiez-featuring-valee
(When Chicago talent gets busy on a record, not many can hang with them. Be on the lookout for more and more big things from the likes of Mother Nature, Valee, and Boathouse.)
24. “Peach Cobbler” - Navy Blue
https://navybluethetruest.com/
(I’m not sure if there is a “chosen one” right now, someone destined to reach such levels of success and/or respect that Drake & Kendrick-esque waves are felt over a generation...but if there is, the mega-talented producer/MC/skater/whatever he wants to be Navy Blue might fit the bill.)
23. “Rose Gold” - 42 Dugg feat. EST Gee
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhmKfKZr-PQ
(There are more than a few songs off of 42 Dugg’s Free Dem Boyz that belong in my Top 50, but “Rose Gold” gets the nod off the strength of the menacing beat paired with 42 and one of the most scorching hot rappers walking the earth right now, EST Gee)
22. "MANIFESTO” - Tyler, The Creator feat. Domo Genesis & DJ Drama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnDXCoHRl4o
(The Selena Gomez/Justin Bieber bar will garner most of the hype around this joint, but don’t let it distract from the fact that this song is one of the best collaborations between former Odd Future members since the collective’s creative peak.)
21. “What’s Next” - Drake
https://soundcloud.com/octobersveryown/drake-whats-next?in=octobersveryown/sets/scary-hours-2-1
(Pay attention to this Drake guy, I think he has a shot of making it. He makes it seem so easy, yet he has no peers at his level right now. There’s the growing underground elite...then there’s Drake, and little competition to duke it out with him when it comes to smash rap hits....assuming that is still supposed to be a thing?)
20. “MOMENTZ” - Mother Nature and Boathouse
https://mothernaturebarz.bandcamp.com/track/momentz-2
(You would be hard pressed to find a more enjoyable, high quality tape than SZNZ. The Chicago MCs rock a beat that sounds like a Camp Lo leftover - and I mean that in the best way possible - and show a natural penchant for earwormy choruses that should serve them very well in this biz.)
19. “Grace Jones”  - maassai
https://maassai.bandcamp.com/track/grace-jones
(Somewhere between spoken word and where Lyricist Lounge-era Rawkus resides, you can find the warrior poet that is maassai: quite simply one of the most impressive MCs in rap right now.)
18. “How It Feels” - Lil Baby & Lil Durk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAsRTTO8L2k
(I know how it feels to care relatively little about a collaboration project between two of the game’s more revered Lil’s, then be blown away by both of them rapping their asses off for like 20 songs.)
17. “Falling Out the Sky” - Armand Hammer & The Alchemist feat. Earl Sweatshirt
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctmTme9cG74
(There’s wavy, and then there’s wavy in the hands of The Alchemist, Earl Sweatshirt and Armand Hammer. One of Haram’s many standouts, this one is probably not what fans expected when they first saw the album’s tracklist, but it might actually be more special than we expected.)
16. “Capitol 1″ - EST Gee
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ng7Sg1_RTM
(Mark my words: by the time we reach the end of 2021, EST Gee will be in the top 10 of every reputable rap site’s best MC list. At least I know that he will most likely be on mine.)
15. “LUMBERJACK” - Tyler, the Creator feat. DJ Drama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WOjaYotX1c
(Who knew we needed Tyler to join forces with DJ Drama to rap over a Gravediggaz joint? Never one to do what everyone expects, when this cut dropped about a week before his new album was released, it was clear that he was ready to pick up where he left off with his impressive bar-work on a flurry of features in 2020. Now that I think about it, after “Something To Talk About” and “327″ maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that Tyler dropped one of the hardest joints of the year.)
14. “The Stellar Ray Theory” - Mach-Hommy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3GWJrL2ht0
(The single that Mach & Griselda stans were terrified to hear, at the risk of revealing their no-longer-a-secret project to be a painful example of how far the parties had drifted since their over-publicized fallout, only to find the opposite: Mach & Gunn didn’t just find their chemistry once again, they improved upon it.)
13. “Sandra” - MIKE
https://mikelikesrap.bandcamp.com/track/sandra
(With his new Disco! album, MIKE managed to step outside of his typical lane of delivery, showing how nimble he truly is as a MC, and even takes his skills to another level as a producer, delivering what might be the most enjoyable album of his career thus far.)
12. "No Time” - Your Old Droog feat. Wiki
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Y8Ozq9tMLE
(The new YOD album sounds so painstakingly written and executed, you would never believe it just casually dropped out of the blue one evening. Few are better at crafting themes without compromising the joy of listening to the music, Droog delivered once again.)
11. "What The Money Taught Us” - Skyzoo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JV2QEbxMYgU
(This new Skyzoo album has so much beauty to unpack, please dig in if you have been keeping it on the back-burner for some reason.)
And now the Top 10...
10. “Folie Á Deux” - Mach-Hommy feat. Westside Gunn & Keisha Plum
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LF1-VvJsbqI
(Conductor Williams does it again, putting his own unique touch to one of Pray For Haiti’s standout cuts. The song is almost beautiful sound if it wasn’t for Westside Gunn, Mach and Keisha Plum pumping their own unique rawness into the beat. This one represents everything going right with Griselda right now.)
Tumblr media
9. “Hallways” - Peter Rosenberg feat. Roc Marciano & Flee Lord
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrDrvozDzo4
(Superior to anything on last year’s Mt. Marci, Disco Vietnam really blessed Flee Lord and Roc Marciano with the type of late night loungin’ in New York banger that Roc knows how to knock out the park better than anyone. “Hallways” screams late night underground radio in a way that feels both nostalgic and fresher than just about anything out right now.)
Tumblr media
8. "Seeing Green” - Nicki Minaj feat. Lil Wayne & Drake
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diUcHDlCqMo
(Many have tried to recapture the skill, swagger, and star power of The Roc in the early 00′s, but most have not been able to come close. Leave it to the diamonds in Young Money’s crown to come through and capture the pomp and circumstance so successfully, it’s amazing that Just Blaze wasn’t somehow involved. If you aren’t feelin’ at least one of these verses, time to join a hater support group.)
Tumblr media
7. “Prayers Over Packages” - DJ Muggs & Rome Streetz & DJ Muggs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2r2AYxN20ZI
(Most underground artists must be so excited to have the legendary DJ Muggs lace them with a full project, and I’m sure Rome Streetz was honored. But while Muggs delivered another strong performance on Death & The Magician, it’s Rome that elevates the material to truly masterful levels.)
Tumblr media
6. “Wants and Needs” - Drake feat. Lil Baby
https://soundcloud.com/octobersveryown/drake-wants-and-needs-feat-lil?in=octobersveryown/sets/scary-hours-2-1
(Yes Drake still has the touch, one of rap music’s few legitimate hitmakers left....but hot damn, it’s Lil Baby coming through to turn the joint to ashes that carries “Wants and Needs” to song of the year caliber levels.)
Tumblr media
5. “S.R.D.” - Peter Rosenberg feat. Styles P, Ransom & Smok DZA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tzSrIZ8tso
(Don’t overthink it: the watery boom-bap backdrop provided by Buck Dudley is exquisite, and all three MCs go in. I think it’s time to admit that if it wasn’t for the like him or passionately hate him aura around Peter Rosenberg, a lot more folks would. be praising this compilation as one of the finest since peak DJ street tape era.)
Tumblr media
4. “Black Sunlight” - Armand Hammer & The Alchemist feat. KAYANA
https://armandhammer.bandcamp.com/track/black-sunlight-featuring-kayana
(What more can I say about this union by now? Al dipping into his breezy bag to bless the lyrical onslaught of billy woods and ELUCID was not something that I thought I needed, but after hearing them cook together I don’t know if I ever want Armand Hammer to go back to the bleak soundscapes they’re often know for. The contract in style was so effective throughout Haram, bringing out the best from all parties, in my not-so-humble opinion...hopefully even more to come from this alliance.)
Tumblr media
3. “TV Dinners” - The Alchemist feat. Sideshow & Boldy James
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuUGrlVivic
(A slick, seemingly harmless little head nodder from The Alchemist, Boldy and the rapidly ascending main-stage level Sideshow. I felt this one right from the jump the day Al’s This Thing of Ours EP dropped, and it’s remained high on my list of 2021 favorites ever since. Give me a bunch of chill MCs doing deceptively slick pen-work over a jazzy but simple loop, and I’m set.)
Tumblr media
2. “The 26th Letter” - Mach-Hommy feat. Westside Gunn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7jcjW8h230
(Forget the albums that go for thousand of dollars. Forget the mysterious aura around him, forget the Twitter stan-dom and those that loathe them, and forget the flames of Griselda gossip that are fanned by both fans and doubters....and just imagine you never heard this MC rap before and you have just pressed play on “The 26th Letter”. )
Tumblr media
1. “Kill All Rats” - Conway & Big Ghost LTD. feat. Ransom & Rome Streetz
https://bigghostlimited.bandcamp.com/track/kill-all-rats-ft-ransom-rome-streetz
(Whenever attempting to wrangle my favorite songs into one tidy list, there is one ex-factor that can elevate a collection of bars to an elite song: execution. You already know that when punchlines kings the caliber of Ransom, Rome Streetz, and Conway The Machine get on a record together, it’s bound to be a bar-fest....but to the extent of “Kill All Rats”??? Not expected. The name of the song itself invites a certain degree of redundancy, but when three great MCs jump on a track and write verses near the top of their skill level - and when a producer like Big Ghost sounds equally incensed with the instrumental that he brought to the table - even a straight-forward posse cut can end up being the best rap song of the year thus far.)

Playlist for Everything
Tumblr media
READ “EVERYTHING” ON AO3
This post is going to be extra af, but I am really inspired by music and am so in love with how perfectly some of these songs fit in with feeling of this story. I just want to yell loudly about how much I love some of these songs 😂
Here’s the link to the playlist (YouTube)
Below the cut  = more details and some highlights of the lyrics for each song!
TL;DR: If I had to narrow it down to only a few songs that really capture the essence of the story, they would be (in order of importance):
1. Unfold by Alina Baraz and Galimatias 2. Lights Out by Ayelle and Sonn 3. Strange by Kris Bowers feat Hilary Smith 4. I Miss You by Adele 5. The Bitter Suite III: Embrace by The Dear Hunter
1. The Bitter Suite III: Embrace by The Dear Hunter
Darkness Hesitation I fell into her arms Breathe in, this is amazing Breathe out, this is amazing She removed her clothes and all of the world shined Now that we're alone, all of the world shines First hot breath, then cold hands Intrusion, but aware The fire inside was alight, and she bloomed I never knew life could ever be this good The distant sighs, the clothes on the floor The bedding a mess, she sings for more We fall beneath the sea in the back of our hearts, And fail to breathe until we resurface again.
So I’m just in love with this band. They have a series of albums (Act I - V) that tell a story throughout all of the songs (they are AMAZING and I highly recommend). In this song, the main character loses his virginity to a woman he later falls in love with, and I just thought this song perfectly captures the overall experience really well. Plus, the bass riff that starts around the 5 minute mark is absolutely beautiful/emotional in a way that I can’t quite explain.
2. Come Here by Sabrina Claudio
I'm dying to see you You know what I'm fiending for The only one to get to me Only one to get this close So I want you to come here I want you to come here I just need you near
This one is more about the sensual vibe of the music, but the lyrics are also pretty fitting.
3. Speechless by Beyonce
Goin' out my head I think I'm losin' all my mind (all my mind) Drive me crazy burning candles, makin' love all night (all night) Feels so strange, it feels so crazy to be in your world (in your world) In your arms lost for words, you got me (you got me) Speechless
This one is pretty obvious when you listen to it hahaha
4. Unfold by Alina Baraz and Galimatias
Cover my thoughts in gold I'm your flower, watch me unfold My vulnerability, letting you consume me The parts of me that eyes can't see The glowing underneath Picking off the petals I'll let you if you're gentle This kind of love we can't control The art of touch, I am covered in gold I know that you feel me now No I'm never going down The parts of me buried underneath The glowing, don’t you see? I know that you feel me now
This is one of the songs I am OBSESSED WITH, especially in relation to this story. Such beautiful lyrics and just a beautiful song in general with that perfectly slow, sexy/sensual vibe.
5. I Miss You by Adele
I want every single piece of you I want your heaven and your oceans too Treat me soft but touch me cruel I wanna teach you things you never knew, baby Bring the floor up to my knees Let me fall into your gravity Then kiss me back to life to see Your body standing over me I love the way your body moves Towards me from across the room Brushing past my every groove No one has me like you do, baby Bring your heart, I'll bring my soul But be delicate with my ego I wanna step into your great unknown With you and me setting the tone
I’ve always loved this song and how sexy/emotional it is. The beat (especially around the 30 second mark when it really starts) is ON POINT.
6. Until It Hurts by Fransisca Hall
Undress these beautiful lies Blind me with animal eyes Carve your heart into mine Carve your heart into mine Brush me with venomous lips Tear me to passionate strips Stir up the beast inside Stir up the beast inside Take me for all I'm worth Touch me until it hurts
7. The End by JPOLND
Keep your breath on me And keep keep keep going 'Til my body is free Keep your eyes on me And keep keep keep going 'Til I'm the last thing you see Keep your touch on my skin And keep keep keep going Keep keep keep going...
8. Show Me by Alina Baraz and Galimatias
Rising like the smoke You linger on me You got me so high I can finally breathe You're walking poetry It's what you do to me It's what you do to me Touch me with no hands Hold me with your eyes Unwind me with your mind tonight Speak with no words Show me and I'm all yours
ANOTHER PERFECTLY FITTING SONG. The beat/sexy vibe + lyrics UGH.
9. Strange by Kris Bowers feat Hilary Smith
This is an instrumental track from the Bridgerton soundtrack that played when the main couple makes love for the first time. I just thought it was SO beautiful. One of those pieces that really makes you feel something without needing any words. I envisioned this to be playing during either the “everything” scene where he touches her face, or when they actually finally start making love. P.S. This is a cover of Strange by Celeste, which is also just as beautiful but the lyrics don’t really fit for the situation. Highly recommend checking it out though!
10. Vulnerable (David Luxe remix) by Tinashe
Once upon a time I was all alone How you like me now? Do I turn you on? Now I got you drunk, hot, and vulnerable Show me what you want, give me what you want, want Have to make you mine, get you on the floor Yeah, watch me go to work, I’ll put on a show
This is for when things start really heating up lol. It’s more about the sexy beat/vibe, but the lyrics are relatively fitting too. I like the original too, but this remix gets rid of the rap part which isn’t as appropriate for this use, plus I like the beat a bit better in the remix.
11. One in a Million by Aaliyah
So, no one else love me like you do That's why I don't mind to spend my life with you (with you) I want to please you in any way I can I want to share my world, don't you understand? Your love is one in a million It goes on and on and on You give me a really good feeling, all day long
Just kind of continuing the sexy vibe here, but the lyrics fit really well too.
12. Made to Love by John Legend
Oh I've never loved, I've never loved Never loved someone like this All-I-know is... I was sent here for you We were made to love We were made to love You were sent for me too We were made to love We were made to love
Again, needed a few songs that were a little faster for the sexier parts haha. The lyrics on this one are also pretty beautiful too.
13. Lights Out by Ayelle and Sonn
Talk about the way you wanna be You don't ever hesitate to say how All you wanna do is to be with me Taking it all in I wanna be with you 'til the sun rises In your eyes, in your eyes, in your eyes I wanna paint the moon with your eyelashes Paint the night, paint the night, paint the night Lights out
THIS ONE MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE ON THE WHOLE PLAYLIST (along with Unfold). This song is not only slow and sensual but the lyrics are BEAUTIFUL. I put it towards to the end because I think of it as when they’re coming down after and cuddling. Just imagine them looking into each other’s eyes being super in love. WARNING: If you are wearing headphones, there is a realistic knocking sound throughout the song that can be kind of alarming lol
14. I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing (piano version) by Aerosmith
Don't want to close my eyes I don't want to fall asleep 'Cause I'd miss you, babe And I don't want to miss a thing
Ok so...I’m partial to this song because the full version is what my husband and I had our first dance to at our wedding. So this song will always give me major feels. BUT I included this special piano version specifically, because just like Strange, it evokes a certain beautiful feeling of romance without needing the extra words. Just to wrap up the end with that warm fuzzy feeling of love
If anyone actually read this.....THANK YOU. It really means a lot to me ❤️

JSHK Fanfic Recs
Haven’t seen any fic lists on here so I thought I’d make one. These are just some of my personal favorites- I’m sure I’m missing many more.
  Oneshots
Astronaut Ice Cream — And All the Stuff We Don’t Know How to Say
Author: thatsrightdollface
I LOVE this fic. A nice blend of fluff and angst, it hits really heavy with the emotions and the “what could have been.” Bittersweet and beautifully written, I really recommend anything by this author
Hanahako
Author: AC_Schimidt
A really nice take on hanahaki disease- actually one of the first I’ve read. Fantastic characterization, it’ll definitely hurt, but in a good way
Circles and Circles of Sorrow
Author: shcherbatskayas
This one will make you cry. An exploration of Kou dealing with Mitsuba’s death, and his relationship with his brother. Emotional and beautifully written
All the Ways to Care About You
Author: LyricalSniperRifle
Hananene told through different parts of the body. Really touching and poetic
Belong Here
Author: thatsrightdollface
Ghost! Hotel! Au! I love this au so much, and this fic really captures the haunting, whimsical, and mysterious air of it
Multichapter Fics
Down to the Last Petal
Author: Indigo_Floof
Chapters: 6/6
This fic is honestly one of the best I’ve ever read. Sometimes when canon is moving to slow you just gotta take the series by the horns and write it yourself. I love the theories posited here, I love the writing, I love the explanations provided for literally every single unresolved plot point. It’s fantastic, but it will also destroy you emotionally. You WILL cry reading this. Highly recommend
The Disastrous Haunting of Room 404
Author: banjjakz
Chapters: 3/7
Okay, this fic literally has my brand down to a T. Exploring more of the horror elements of the series, this fic is funny, incredibly written, and downright unsettling at points. The elevator scene in chapter one is honestly one of the best written scenes I’ve read in fanfic. If you like horror themes, and overall just eerie vibes, you’ll love this fic
Between the Lines
Author: WingSongHalo
Chapters: 2/2
A really cute and fun fic about a supernatural books and Nene’s hopeless romantic self. Have I mentioned I love hananene? Really beautifully written with that tender ending we all want
Camellias for You
Author: Hajirue
Chapters: 4/?
Whoops, its another hanahaki fic because I’m a sucker for emotional damage. This one is really sweet and sad all wrapped up in one great package, and when you finally remember its a hanahaki fic it sucker punches you into next week
All the Better to See You With
Author: inspiration99
Chapters: 11/11
A really unique red riding hood au set in feudal Japan. Absolutely love the twists and turns they’ve set up in this fic. Beautiful writing with that melancholic, yet hopeful tone of the main series
Author Recs
Can’t quite choose a favorite from these people, so here’s just some general recommendations
WingSongHalo
Specializes in hananene and those sweet confessions. Absolutely love their use of urban legends and folklore in every fic- it feels like you’re getting a mythology lesson alongside all the beautiful writing and lovely ship stuff
thatsrightdollface
Every one shot of theirs makes me so soft. Every fic has a bittersweet flavor to it, ripe with introspection and really makes you think
DaikonSenpai
Their brand is “first kisses” and gosh do they do it so well. I could literally read this stuff until my teeth fall out
Considering it feels like I’ve read every single fic from this fandom, I’m sure I’ve missed a few. Feel free to add any of your own recommendations!

Song of the Ancients SERIOUS REVIEW(s)
I was told to review every version of Song of the Ancients, so I did. I tried to stick to things that were released officially but I’m sure I’m missing some. I know there’s going to be a new version on the Orchestral Addendum that’s supposed to come out this month. Also I don’t know a fucking thing about music so this is literally 3 pages of straight rambling. Also they’re not really in any kind of order other than Nier Gestalt, Nier Automata, and Other.
Song of the Ancients: Devola - https://youtu.be/qCKEXPXtrEU
This is it, the first version of Song of the Ancient’s you’ll ever hear, and also the last. At least in Nier Gestalt. It’s a classic, and Devola has no idea what the words to it mean. And neither do we. But it perfectly sets the tone. It’s nostalgic, it’s sad, it’s mysterious, it’s sad but written a second time. I love Devola and would die for her. It isn’t my absolute favorite rendition of the song, but I can’t deny its importance. This is the one that gave us the rest. 9/10
Song of the Ancients: Popola - https://youtu.be/IZdnJLdmRlI
This song makes a showstopping appearance in Automata where it and the library meant nothing to me or anyone else because no one actually played Gestalt before Automata, let’s face it. The more subdued of the two character versions of the song, which, y’know, makes sense. Maybe a bit disorienting and trance like if you turn it up far enough and close your eyes. Sometimes I like this version a lot more than the Devola version, sometimes I don’t. It also gets a 9/10 for being a classic.
Song of the Ancients: Hollow Dreams - https://youtu.be/fxmP4eCFR4U
I fucking love this one. The Devola and Popola duet we all wanted with none of the… extreme angst. I also read a really good fan fiction once where [REDACTED] and it started with this performance so it ranks really high for me. It has a great sort of tavern energy to it (which, no shit, right?) and I don’t know. I don’t know I really love this one. The harmonization, the piano, the percussion, it all just works. 10/10
Song of the Ancients: Fate - https://youtu.be/ady--PNMsfI
My most unpopular opinion on this song is I don’t really like this version all that much. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because I knew what happened already so it has no impact on me. It’s got a lot of drum. Maybe too much drum? I don’t know I’ve never totally vibed with this one. There’s an attempt but parts of it I just really don’t care for. That’s why it ranks so low.  It’s not the worst, and I recognize that it’s like. Super iconic. But eh. 5/10.
Song of the Ancients: Lost Androids - https://youtu.be/CfCEueBER5g
I just. Super. Do not fucking like this song at all. There’s so much happening in it and none of it’s very good. Devola and Popola’s sick techno dance party dot mp3. Easily the worst of the official releases of this song. It doesn’t help that the Nier Gestalt DLC just isn’t good either. Why did I beat the entire thing? The world may never know. 3/10
Song of the Ancients: Piano version from 15 Nightmares & Arrange Tracks
- https://youtu.be/orEoq7KFdrM
I’m biased and love all piano remixes and this one is good. I don’t know why there are two official piano remixes that aren’t the same, but there are. This one feels really emotional, sorta soft, and a lotta sad, but the remix-y part in the middle kinda falls off for me. Most of it is really good, but it doesn’t reach goosebump status for me which is a shame because most of the pieces are there. Overall, it’s pretty good. 7/10
Song of the Ancients: from the actual Nier Piano collection mix which is a different version than the one above - https://youtu.be/K_4HGh7Hh7w
It’s weird to think that two officially released piano versions of the same exact song could be so different but they honestly kinda are. This one feels stronger than the other, but it still isn’t quite there for me either. I think overall I might like it more, but the emotional impact of it is somehow less? Once again, it’s overall pretty good, but the vibes don’t totally match with me. 7/10
The Legend of Nier 8-bit Heroes from 15 Nightmares & Arrange Trakcs - https://youtu.be/LgvF_xRPoxs
This is kind of a bonus mention because it isn’t strictly Song of the Ancients, it’s a mix of a few songs from Nier Gestalt, but it just happens to start with Song of the Ancients. It hits pretty much all the notes from it so I’m including it here. I like it more than the hacking track from Automata, but only a little bit. It’s sad but also chiptune. However because it is quite literally only 1/8th of the entire song and for the sake of this list I refuse to acknowledge the other 7 minutes of music, I give it 1/8 / 10.
Song of the Ancients: Atonement - https://youtu.be/wNWShKuopic
You know it, you love it, and you’re crying thinking about it, it’s the Atonement version from Automata. It’s everything Fate wanted to be, but now much, much better. All of the music in this game is just, so intense and full of meaning and it just feels. Important. It’s what movie music would be if it didn’t suck. I think this one works really well in capturing the emotions around the twins trying to make up for crimes they straight up just didn’t commit. Devola and Popola make me cry. I love this song. Crying Creep emoji/10
Sonc of the Ancients: Atonement: Hacking Track remix - https://youtu.be/QD1F-staPms
So there’s like, not really a chance you’d ever hear this entire thing played out in game because of the way the hacking mechanic works. I think it’s a pretty good chiptune rendition though. I don’t care to listen to most of the hacking tracks on their own though, but there’s nothing offensive about this one. It’s Atonement, and Atonement is still a really good song on it’s own, so it just gets more points by cheating. 7/10
Song of the Ancients: from Arranged & Unreleased Tracks - https://youtu.be/lDYc9Ov4Mr8
Kinda love this one. It’s played on an accordion. Everyone I send this one to thinks it’s weird because of that, but I love it. It sounds like a romantic date in Italy. This might be one of the only versions that doesn’t make me want to start crying which is weird because it’s a remix of the Atonement version specifically again. I have really weird taste in music though. 10/10 gay dates in Italy
Song the Ancients: Atonement: from the Nier Music Concert: The Memories of Puppets - https://youtu.be/4z3wr0xATJY
Once again, Atonement fucking slaps. I’m always impressed by these things being performed live because the words aren’t real and they sound like they’d be hard to say. This is basically just a clearer version of the one from the game. I don’t like it more, though. It has a part where it slows down completely which is sexy, on it’s own. My heart tells me to give this a 9/10 though for reasons I don’t know. Perhaps because I haven’t used that ranking yet. In a hard to explain way I don’t like this version as much as the one in the game. So, 9/10.
Song of the Ancients DoD3 remix - https://youtu.be/SAJi9Q-RRmQ
This one starts out kinda slow, but when it picks up I think it sounds way more like Atonement than Fate. And when it sounds like Atonement I really like it. However I have this DLC for DoD3 and it’s the only song I ever had playing and I’m still not completely sick of it so that has to count for something. It’s not horrible but it’s not great either. It sounds like it belongs in DoD3 and none of the music in that game is great. 6/10
Song of the Ancients the… Music Video? - https://youtu.be/_iXT9eWgaMw
This one isn’t bad, but it’s really, really weird that it exists. I’ve never been able to really remember what this one sounds like so it can’t rank very high for me. It gets bonus points simply because it exists… at all. I think wikipedia told me this was like, official, or supported, I don’t know. Maybe it doesn’t count, maybe it does, but I wanted to mention it anyway even though it isn’t on one of the CDs. She does a good job at performing and it’s a unique remix that takes the aesthetic qualities of Fate and dials them back into something smooth and emotional. I definitely don’t hate it, but it’s not on my phone. 7/10
Song of the Ancients: Orchestral Arrangement - https://youtu.be/Ixk5zFXldCk
This was instantly and immediately my favorite rendition of the song and not much has changed since it first released. While it is without a doubt the most different of all the renditions, it has an almost magical quality to it. Tonally, it seems to follow the story of Devola and Popola as we know them in Nier Gestalt.  Maybe I’m just projecting random shit onto this song, who knows, I’m not a music major. People have said it has kind of a Disney movie feel at the beginning, which is true, but as it goes on it loses that sort of innocent, lofty feeling, and becomes more intense, and I don’t know. I just really fucking love the way this song goes. Compare how it starts to how it ends and it’s just. Ugh. This one is so good. What the fuck. If you listen to nothing else on this list, please listen to this one. 11/10.

My Kind
Corpse Husband x Reader (Female)
Warning: Swearing
Genre: Fluff, RPF (Real Person Fic)
Summary: Having been chosen by the gang to be a guest streamer on today’s stream of Among Us, it’s safe to say Y/N’s super excited but also a bit nervous. The whole of her anxiety gets lifted off her when she meets someone with the exact same vibe as hers - yeah you guessed it.
Requested by @monizzle96 Hi dear! Thank you so much for your wonderful request! I’m so terribly sorry it’s taken me so long to write and post it but here it finally is! I hope you come across it and read it and if so I hope you enjoy it! Love, Vy ❤
This has to be the fiftieth time I’ve checked my setup in the past twenty four hours. But no, I’m definitely not nervous, what are you talking about. Pshhh. Nah, being nervous isn’t in my brand. Plus, what do I have to make me nervous - a group of famous streamers inviting me onto their stream to play Among Us with them because they enjoyed my own streams? Ok yeah, that’s a pretty good reason. Not gonna lie, I almost chucked my phone out of excitement when I received that DM from Toast, telling me they’d picked me to be their guest streamer for today’s date. My stomach was doing somersaults for a good forty-eight hours following that text and then the anxiety slowly started setting in fueled by the expectations they probably have of me.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not inexperienced in the streaming field, I’ve been a streamer longer than some of the members of Toast’s streamer gang actually. But I never managed to garner that big of a following which I’m honestly quite ok with. I have a modest - ok, maybe larger than modest - following consisting of incredibly loyal fans which I will never stop being grateful for. They are all so respectable of me, my privacy and my boundaries. They know the main rules: no shit-talking in the chat or in any of my comment sections, no bashing other YouTubers in my comments/chat, and most definitely not asking for a face reveal. Fun fact: I didn’t even set up that last rule, they all just collectively know not to ask for it.
I’ve been keeping my brand pretty low-key to avoid garnering some unwanted attention - some of which I’ve already experienced on certain social media platforms following the full body pictures I posted on there - face not visible of course. I tend to also have my webcam on, facing towards my hands working away on the keyboard sometimes when I stream. I don’t know why people obsess over faceless content creators’ hands, but I appreciate the enthusiasm - it also drives me to do a manicure every now and then which ain’t so bad, self-care and all that you know.
Now, back to the subject of my ridiculous nervousness.
You see, it has layers.
I’m nervous of ‘preforming’ underwhelmingly and I’m nervous of what my own fans will think of the person I will become during this stream. They know me as a super chill and laid-back person, which I am by the way, but they might think I’m putting on a show if I exhibit any nervous gestures/vocabulary. I highly doubt they would, but the possibility is not letting my mind rest. And now that it’s about ten minutes till the stream starts, I’m getting doing my best to calm my nerves.
They are all just people. You know they are super chill too. Just be yourself, that’s why they invited you, because you are yourself on all your streams. They liked you for your personality, humor, maybe even your gaming skills. So chill the hell out and be yourself, damn it!
Easier thought than put into action that’s for sure.
I start my stream five minutes early just so I can vibe with my viewers for a little while before I have to meet the gang. My fans always have a way of injecting me with confidence, they remind me of where I was when I started and how far I’ve come. How much I achieved when I thought I’d be nothing and no one, someone the algorithm would simply overlook. But then they entered my life and I entered theirs and it all became much better than I ever thought it would get to be. I rarely tell myself ‘good job’ for the milestones I’ve reached or the hard work I’ve put into my content, but that’s probably cause I orient myself based on that quote from the movie Whiplash: ‘There are no two words in the English language more harmful than good job’ - simply put, I’m never satisfied with what I do and I always strive to do better. My fans, however, make sure I don’t go overboard with it - always serving as a reminder that I’ve done plenty for myself and others. And that’s what makes an amazing fandom, one I consider family.
Whoa, when did those five minutes fly by?!
Ah shit, here we go. Deep breaths, Y/N you got this.
“Hello!“ I say as I enter the Discord call, subconsciously biting my lower lip, grateful the camera isn’t capturing it. However, I make a mental note to keep my hands steady cause that’s the one part of me people can actually see and the last thing I want is for them to see how much my fingers are trembling.
“Oh hi, Y/N!“ Toast is the first one to greet me, “Welcome to the stream! Thank you so much for accepting our invitation.“
“Thank you for having me and inviting me, Toast. This is a huge deal for me. You guys are basically YouTube legends, this is unreal to me.“ I reply, cringing immediately afterwards because of my fangirl rambling. Great way to make first impressions, Y/N. Bravo.
To be fair, they already have an impression of you. Quit stressing.
Aright, you’ve got a point, me.
“Oh please, we owe all that to our fans. We’re really nothing special. All streamers are almost completely alike, we all owe where we are to the people who helped us make it there - our fans. We’re no legends.“ Toast says, bringing a small smile to my face as well as a light pink blush to my cheeks, “And from what I’ve seen, you yourself have quite the following. And your fans seem to adore you.“
“And I absolutely adore them.“ I chuckle, “They mean the world to me. They are the reason I’m here today.”
“Then we have to give them a special thank you, don’t you think?“ The teasing, familiar giggle, widens my smile - it’s Rae, “Nice to meet you, Y/N! I’m Rae, and, no cap, I’m quite a fan of your content. No joke, I binged your entire series of Resident Evil 7 as soon as I found your channel when Toast said he’d invite you.“
This rattles me a bit. I can hardly believe it - am I really receiving a compliment from an A-list name in the streaming world? My fans must be hella proud of me right now. A quick glance at my chat confirms that they indeed are. That in and of itself fills me with joy and newfound confidence.
“Oh Gosh, thank you so much Rae! That means the world to me. You’re all so sweet.“ I reply, lifting my ice cold hands to cool down my burning cheeks, my lips spread into a grin, my stomach filled with butterflies.
“Oh please, we have some real savages around here.“ A male voice, seemingly Charlie’s scoffs, “Don’t overlook us please.“
“Wait, we do?“ A deep voice, one I immediately know the owner of speaks up, “Who? How come I don’t know about that?“
I can’t help bust snort, “Nice to meet you, Corpse. Sarcasm central, I see.”
He laughs, “Just returning it to where it’s due. Nice to meet you too, Y/N. Sick Outlast series, by the way.“
Ok, wait, I have two A-list streamers complimenting my content. Ok, I’m bound to crack open a few beers to celebrate later cause OH MY GOD.
“Thanks! I’m a horror junkie so I’d be lying if I said I haven’t binge watched all your story-times. Personal favorites are the deep web ones, they fascinate me.“
“Oh, you’re one of my kind even more than I expected, huh?“ He replies, the tone of his voice changing, raising a bit due to what I can only describe as excitement and enthusiasm. “I’ve had people tell me it’s twisted, but I really like seeing the lengths to which the fucked up human mind can go to. Like, the shit I’ve read is insane! Some stories I didn’t narrate cause I would’ve probably had my video taken down, it was that messed up.“
My eyes widen, sharing the same excitement at the thought of digging deeper into this phenomenon, “Careful, Corpse, you’re walking a dangerous line of tempting me to deep-dive on Reddit in search of those exact stories.”
“No need.“ Corpse says, his tone now taking up a bit of a cocky note, “I still got them all saved, I can send them to you no problem.“
“Please do! I seriously gotta read them now. If I can’t sleep afterwards, I’m blaming you, Corpse. Just FYI.“ I say, giggling slightly, finding myself all but completely comfortable now. I wonder where all that anxiety went?
“Blame fully taken. Given that I’m not much of a sleeper, I’ll keep you company whenever you think there’s a killer hiding in your closet or fear a red room pop-up will appear on your computer screen.“ He replies, chuckling.
“Um, that’s oddly specific.“ Charlie comments, “Been there yourself, buddy?”
“Perhaps.“ Corpse wheezes, getting a laugh out of me too, “I will neither confirm nor deny.“
“You know what, I’ll just private message you my number so if you see it call you at some ungodly hour, you don’t freak the fuck out. Sounds good?“ I ask, already prepping to type it out and send it to him.
“Perfect. Wait...“ he pauses for a second, sounding puzzled for a second, “You don’t have mine.“
“Oh, do I not?“ I reply with a sinister tone - thought to answer the question, I of course don’t have his number.
“Oh, do you?“ He sasses me right back. “If so then you don’t need me to send it to you. Cool.“
Ah, shit
“Wait, no! I-I need to confirm it’s the correct one!“
Damn, never did I think I’d be complimented by some of the most important streamers on this platform, but to get a number of theirs too? That’s a whole another level that will take me time to process. But I’ll do that another time, right now, I have to kick these people’s butts in Among Us and later I have some deep web stories to read.
Turns out, all it takes to get comfortable in a new surrounding is someone of your kind. And Corpse is definitely one of my kind.

Director Mike Figgis Talks Trading Licks with Ronnie Wood
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Before becoming a filmmaker, Leaving Las Vegas director Mike Figgis was a musician and performer in the experimental group called The People Show. Before that, he played trumpet and guitar in the experimental jazz ensemble The People Band, whose first record was produced by Rolling Stone drummer Charlie Watts. He is also the founding patron of an online community of independent filmmakers called Shooting People. You can say Figgis is a People person, which makes him the perfect director to capture Ronnie Wood in the documentary Somebody Up There Likes Me.
One of rock and roll’s most iconic guitarists, Wood is good with people. He plays well with others. He is the Stone who’s never alone. Before he began weaving guitar licks with Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones, Wood helped shape the British rock sound in bands like The Birds and the Creation. He was the bass player to the guitar maestro in The Jeff Beck Group, which featured the distinctive voice of Rod Stewart at the front. They put out two albums, 1968’s Truth and 1969’s Beck-Ola, before splintering just as they were to appear at Woodstock. Wood and Stewart inherited the Small Faces from Steve Marriott and dropped the album First Step in 1970. They realized they were too tall for the diminutive moniker and renamed the band The Faces. They released the albums Long Player and A Nod Is as Good as a Wink…to a Blind Horse in 1971, and Ooh La La (1973), before splitting up in 1975.
Wood guested on albums by David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton, the Band, Donovan, B.B. King, and on Stewart’s solo albums. He spent so much time flavoring other performers’ works, he didn’t put out a solo album of his own until 1974 which he aptly titled I’ve Got My Own Album to Do. Wood also went solo for 1981’s 1234 and collaborated with Bo Diddley on Live at the Ritz in 1988, Wood’s seventh solo album, I Feel Like Playing (2010), featured guest spots from ex-Faces bandmate Ian McLagan, as well as The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, Guns N’ Roses’ Slash, Billy Gibbons, Bobby Womack, and Jim Keltner.
Somebody Up There Likes Me isn’t structured like most music documentaries. It is primarily a conversation, and it veers from much of Wood’s vast output. The hard-partying musician beat lung cancer and candidly blames his excessive indulgences. He saw bandmates, contemporaries and friends, like Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and John Bonham push past the lethal limits of chemical reactions. Wood himself remembers telling Keith Moon to take pills, not bottles of them. Richards remarks in the documentary how the two Rolling Stones guitarists share strong constitutions. Wood began recording with the Rolling Stones when they were halfway through their 1976 album, Black and Blue, and has been steady even up to their recent pandemic live stream.
The documentary also captures Wood’s visual artistry. He was an artist before he was a musician. His drawings were featured on BBC TV’s Sketch Club when he was a child, and he studied at the Ealing Art College. Wood did the cover artwork to Eric Clapton’s 1988 box set Crossroads. The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee continues to capture visions like Mick Jagger’s dancing in a Picasso style, as well as the shots in Somebody Up There Likes Me of him capturing the grace of a ballerina on canvas.
Born in northern England, director Mike Figgis was raised on jazz and Jean-Luc Godard movies. The inventor of the “fig rig” knows when to experiment, such as he did in Timecode (2000) and Hotel (2001), how to get drama out of romance, as he did with One Night Stand, starring Wesley Snipes and Nastassja Kinski, and The Loss of Sexual Innocence. He is adept at crime dramas, directing the “Cold Cuts” episode of The Sopranos in 2004 and Internal Affairs, which starred Richard Gere. He also mines deep emotional schisms in films like Mr. North and Leaving Las Vegas (1995) for which he was nominated for Best Directing and Best Screenplay Oscars. Figgis spoke with Den of Geek about cinematic jams and studio sessions with Ronnie Wood.
Den of Geek: Over the course of the film, you produced a song using nothing but your backings and an orchestra of Ronnie Woods. How was he to produce?
Mike Figgis: He was a delight, actually. We did most of the interviews and everything where he was painting, he was in his own space for that. Then the dialog, he’s very very witty and so on. But at the end of the day, the man’s a musician. Quite later on in the process I said, “Let’s go into a studio and do something.” I think the minute we got into a studio it was different. For both of us because I’m a musician too. It’s just a different kind of reality and the language becomes much simpler between musicians and understanding the equipment, the whole vibe.
Originally Mark Ronson was going to do a soundtrack for us which would have been fantastic and then he just got very, very busy because we got late. I presented him with a kind of template of how maybe could make a nice soundtrack, which is basically what we did anyway. So we did it without Mark and Ronnie was very comfortable with that.
He very much left it to me. He added a lot, obviously. He said, “I’d like to do this as well,” and so on. So, we had a pretty full couple of days in studio time. But he was great to produce.
There are a lot of musicians working on this besides you and Ronnie. Rosey Chan did the score for a painting scene.
Rosey’s my wife by the way. She’s a phenomenal concert pianist and composer and musician in her own right. She’s releasing an album now. She’s an amazing pianist, I just needed something to take us into a different zone, so I asked her to compose some piano pieces for that. Then I did some score myself. Just when he’s talking about drugs. I put a little bit of a weird score on that one.
So is this film more of a cinematic jam that you just edited in the mixing room?
Yeah, I think so. I think that’s a good way of putting it, actually.
Ronnie also worked with Bob Dylan, Prince, David Bowie, Aretha Franklin. Did you allow the interviews to determine what parts of his career you were going to include?
I actually wanted to avoid anybody else. I said, “Let’s just make it about him painting and us talking.” I wanted to make it as simple as possible. That didn’t happen because as soon as you sort of uncover one little stone, you kind of say “Oh, well obviously we should interview the Rolling Stones.” Then he started thinking, “Well, Rod’s around, we can use Rod.” When I discovered about Damien Hirst, “Actually that would be an interesting, unexpected one. That would be good, yeah.” So yeah.
It was kind of organic, really. It was all sort of scheduled based in a sense that, “When are you available?” And, “When am I available? When are these people available?” So, getting the Stones was actually the trickiest thing. You had to go to Berlin and get them between gigs when they were watching the World Cup. In between World Cups actually. Very specific.
I know you’re in the People Band which had an album produced by Charlie Watts. So, were you in the same periphery of the Stones as Ronnie Wood back then?
No, the connection with Charlie was very interesting because the People Band was a free music ensemble. I mean really experimental. Really way out. The drummer was this phenomenal percussionist, still is, called Terry Day. Terry Day went to art college with Charlie’s wife and he knew Charlie because they were both drummers, so they got on really, really well. Charlie Watts has always been a huge jazz fan. Through Terry, it was one of those moments where Charlie says, “You know, we can record you. We got a mobile studio. We can either send the mobile to you wherever you’re playing.” I’m talking about in those days, in ’68 or whenever it was, the idea of a mobile multi-track was pretty amazing. “Or you can come to Olympic Studios,” which was where they recorded Beggars Banquet and everything. It was an amazing studio. And, “We’ll just give you the studio and the engineer, and you guys do what you want.” That’s how that came about and it was really lovely.
Over the years, once in a while I would see Charlie and just catch up, talk about drumming, really. And jazz. So it was really nice interviewing for this one again.
When you were asking Rod Stewart about Peter Grant, he sort of cut back and he became the young man that was bullied.
He did, didn’t he? When he said, “I’m protecting my hands and my face.”
The gangster aspect of that mid ’60’s period, especially with Peter Grant, how did that affect the musicians and the working? Do you think it actually in some ways was good for it?
Well, you know that comes about from a very strange coincidence which was sort of touched on in the film. But, quite a few years back, Malcolm McLaren was wanting to produce a film. A feature film about Led Zeppelin and as a result of that, he and I went and interviewed Peter Grant which is where that footage comes from. I did a huge amount of research into Led Zeppelin and Peter Grant at the time, and spoke to and interviewed a lot of the people who were involved with their success. I didn’t interview Johnny Bindon, but he was a key figure. Johnny Bindon was a kind of very violent criminal. In London. Very good looking. He became an actor for a while. Had amazing sexual legends built around him involving royalty and all kinds of things, and was part of a kind of fashionable gangster scene. The craze and all the rest of it. The London gangster scene.
Sort of became fashionable because people went to all their clubs, and hung out with them, and David Bailey photographed them and all that. So there was a kind of a zeitgeist about gangsterism. There’s an incredibly good book written about it called Jumping Jack Flash which came out two years ago. Bindon became one of the agents for Led Zeppelin and famously beat up somebody so badly on one of their tours that was hospitalized. He was a very mean individual.
The whole association with Led Zeppelin was very much gangsterish because of Peter Grant and his associates who had those stories and so on. So that was a kind of one aspect, and also a lot of the management were fairly crooked in London at that time. There’s a bit of a gay mafia and all the rest of it, so part of the folklore of that period of British rock and roll is very gangsterish, and very much part of the story.
Whenever I think about gangsters and British rock I think of the movie Performance. When you’re filming conversations in the moment, are you saying in your head “this is filmic?”
Not consciously, no. I accept it as being part of the fabric, actually. I try to make everything filmic anyway, so I’m always trying to get as far away from any kind of documentary feel. I like things to have a live element to it.
I loved Peter Grant’s Gene Vincent story. In the Beatles Anthology, George Harrison tells a similar one. What did Gene Vincent mean to young British rock and roller’s that everyone’s got a story about them?
Oh, because he was there, he was around. A little bit like the stories about everyone remembers Big Bill Broonzy and everyone remembers Sister Rosetta Thorpe. Main reason for that is they were a part of a very small group of musicians who were allowed to visit the UK during the Musician’s Union ban on touring. We were basically deprived of a lot of American musicians after the war, and the only reason Broonzy got in and Sister Rosetta Thorpe, was folk musicians were allowed in as opposed to, say, Louis Armstrong.
They all came in as folk singers even though they weren’t. I mean Broonzy was a fully-fledged Chicago blues musician and so was Sister Rosetta Thorpe. But everybody knows that. Anybody that was anybody around at that time would know those names. And Gene Vincent has become a kind of UK legend.
Do you see Ronnie as a very varied painter?
I wanted to capture a certain aspect of his art which was the line drawing. When we first started talking, I looked at all his art books. He does huge canvases with a lot of color, featuring the Rolling Stones, et cetera, et cetera. I was less interested in those. Those sell for a lot of money apparently and people really like them.
But when I saw his line drawing, his very quick drawings. Line drawing is very, very important. Sketching is very important in the same way that when you hear a very basic demo from a musician, there’s a certain truth about that. Then you can produce it and over produce it, and you can make it super sophisticated. I was interested in the bit that leads up to the way that he started producing. I wanted to set up situations where I would just see his line drawing. His ability to control lines, that was amazing.
Then physically watching him do that is fascinating. I love filming people playing their musical instruments. There’s a certain truth about that, they get into their thing. And watching him draw I thought was fascinating. His concentration, absolute. Even in the interview with Damian Hirst. He’s so focused on what he’s doing that he doesn’t really pay much attention to Damian Hirst. Sort of answers the question. He doesn’t pick up on any of the jokes. Because he’s really focused on what he’s doing.
Watching his live stuff, Wood is a different person. While he’s playing guitar, you see him and Keith joking around.
I think that has something to do with the eye. Because I think it’s about blues guitar. You can see the finger memory is really, really strong so I mean in that early footage he’s smoking at the same time, right? He’s smoking, joking around, getting to the microphone, late usually, for the backup vocals. And moving around and having a great time. He doesn’t have to look at the guitar to do that. However, if you are drawing something, either you make that contact with your eye, so creating the triangle between the subject, the canvas, and your eye.  And you’re quite right. Radically different body language, and that’s interesting. There are two physical sides of him demonstrated on film, which you don’t really have to explain. There it is.
Is Somebody Up There Like Me a flip side to Leaving Las Vegas?
Maybe. You know, people have had a life, have had experience and come through darkness and coming to light and so on. For me, it just becomes 10 times more interesting than people who’ve just had a nice life and behaved well. Look a little puzzled that they’re not sort of 70 or something because it’s all been quite peaceful, you know? So there’s a kind of turbulence there which I think he says quite well when he says, “I see a fork in a road I take it.”
Like he says, “I would do it with my eyes more open now if I did it again.” I kind of admired that. It’s not like me. I’m much more protective. But I also loved the way he talked about the drugs. He talked about, “I would never get to the point of losing control because I always knew.” Because he’s very ambitious. “I always knew where I had to be next and I never wanted to be at the place where I couldn’t control where I wanted to be.” I’m sure there were a few exceptions to that, but in general, that was quite truthful.
You’re known as a very experimental filmmaker and I was wondering how you keep coming up with different ways to look through the camera?
I got sort of bored with 35mm and started going back to 16mm and then when video got more interesting, looking at video. Then as video got smaller and XLR happened, that radically changed the possibilities. Then as the world changes, like with at the beginning of this conversation we talked about the coronavirus effect. And how the Timecode principle, how that then ties in with what is possible in terms of filmmaking, really.
When you were making Timecode, did you know that you were predicting pandemic filmmaking?
No, although looking back I can think where it’d be really useful now.
The Rolling Stones streamed their performance early in the pandemic, is this the future of entertainment and is it an imposition?
I think in a way it is. Obviously at some point we will get coronavirus under some kind of control. But there are dire predictions about what’s coming next in terms of the unleashing of the demons that come through global warming, et cetera, et cetera.
On the one hand, maybe these variations of these conditions will continue well into the future. But I think even if it was just coronavirus, I’m talking about making films with various people right now, it’s almost like unless you actually acknowledge the world as it is today and has been for the last six months, any film that you make is going to have an air of unreality about it because this is quite definitely a global reality now. The way we’re communicating now and so forth.
I’m doing a masterclass in London at the film school next week and I’m going to be talking just about that to young filmmakers. The best ways to go about making films now.
As a jazz musician, what did you make of Jagger’s classification of jazz from back then?
It was pretty accurate, actually. I’d done the blues documentary with Martin Scorsese, the history of the British Blues, Red, White, and Blues. So, I covered that period and I was fascinated by that unique British period anyway, which is why in a way Marty and I got on so well too was because unlike America, the post war British music scene was heavily into traditional jazz and then bebop. Then folk music, and skiffle, and all those things. They all combined. If you talk to anybody, Eric Clapton, anybody, they’ll all make the same references. Big Bill Broonzy and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and then Woody Guthrie, and so kind of everybody was listening to all those influences and people were coming out of traditional jazz and then making quite dynamic decisions about this, that, and the other.
But the Trad boom was, the commercial aspect of the British jazz movement was very commercial, and immediately commercialized. There are some great musicians, but not the hippest genre in the world, so Jagger’s commented quite rightly if you want to be a young, sexy, happening musician, you’re not going to base your style on your grandfather’s taste and the rest of it. It was a kind of nice point of view. I loved it when he said, “I like the MJQ because of the way they looked and the way they played. I’m not sure I was crazy about the music or something like that.”
And I loved that he said, “We can be like that or we can be something different.” I love that moment in the film where you actually suddenly see the Stones kind of go, “Yep.” That’s pretty different from those two choices. That was, you’re creating a new genre there. And I have to say, my respect for the Rolling Stones went very, very high in making this documentary. I always like the Stones. I preferred more basically a blues band and I was listening to a lot more complicated pop musicians and jazz musicians.
I read that you’re doing a K-drama about the #MeToo movement. Would that be in the K-pop industry?
Yeah, I became interested in Korean film of course like most filmmakers. And then on an impulse, two and a half years ago, I bought a ticket to Seoul and I went and stayed there for three or four weeks, and just went around meeting people and just trying to get a handle on their film scene, initially. Then, I kind of got hooked on K-dramas as well and started to meet the actors. That’s turned into a project that’s been in development for about a year now. It’s going really, really well, but coming up with this series of scenarios. Sort of loosely around the #MeToo movement, really but just to do with the Korean social pop entertainment scene. And that’s what that was there.
I didn’t know that the Stones had originally thought about asking Ron Wood to replace Brian Jones. As a musician, you said they stuck to their guns. Do you think that would have been more true had they skipped over Mick Taylor and gone straight to Ronnie Wood?
It was interesting because that period, because obviously Jagger comes from a very much blues background. But by that time he was a megastar and the Stones were very much “Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones.” He was making movies, he was hanging out at the clubs, he was the hip guy. So obviously his horizons were expanding and he said that having Mick Taylor in the band really expanded his horizons as a songwriter because the voicings that Mick Taylor used. Mick did incredibly lyrical runs as the guitarist. Not a straight down the line blues player by any stretch of the imagination. A great blues player, but that’s not all he did.
So, I can imagine at that period, it would have been totally understandable if they’d continued to go in a different direction. I think what happened when Mick Taylor walked out, there was a kind of obvious cause of action to go to Ronnie. That probably then put Keith in a more comfortable zone in terms of the two-guitar thing because I would imagine that with Mick Taylor in the band, Keith’s role must have been definitely not so much the two-guitar thing because they are functioning at different levels. Probably in a way, back to a kind of grassroots level by bringing Ronnie back in.
Also, he looks like them. They were like brothers at that point. There’s a kind of a, suddenly a cohesiveness to the band as a band in a different way. Mick had a wider range in terms of songwriting and performance. A different way to go, but I think he was more than happy to go back into the kind of grassroots journey that they’d been on.
It’s very interesting how one musician can radically alter the destiny of the band, the longest lasting band in rock and roll history basically now.

I got two games on sale in the PSN store I'd be pretty glad to recommend
Rayman Legends and Ty the Tasmanian Tiger HD
Rayman Legends has the better polish between the two, BUT Ty was an indie game made back all the way in the PS2 and Gamecube era, so obviously there's gonna be an edge for Rayman here. But, both are pretty solid
Rayman Legends is a 2d side scrolling platformer with optional Co Op. I originally had the game for my 360, but time took its course and I lost it. I remember my friends and I playing it together nights after school, and the inevitable descent into maddening laughter as we kept dying over and over.
It still holds up. It's pretty fast paced, flows pretty well, the graphics are gorgeous and wonderfully animated, and the music... mua. So good. It mixes orchestra with. . . Kazoos? Rabid country bumpkin? It's got this real peaceful or real chaotic unhinged vibe to it, and there's even a level that plays to the beat of a game appropriate Black Betty. Not to mention there's TONS of levels, TONS of secrets to find, and TONS of character skins for 4 different characters that pretty much all play the same. It's a fun time, and I can tell you from experience that this game will make you feral but in a good way, especially if you play with friends. A 9/10
Ty the Tasmanian Tiger is a collectathon from circa 2002 ish. I still remember the commercial for it where Sonic, Spyro, and another character I can't remember were wrapped up in bandages in the hospital, all shaking in fear at Ty himself. It actually kickstarted this weird obsession I had with Australia that lasted through my elementary years. There was a few sequels with 2 being my personal favorite, but time also took those from me. Thankfully it's back on modern consoles and pc.
So, Ty is a collectathon. If you've played something like Banjo or Mario, you get the gist. What makes this game different is the setting and overall control style with combat involving various kinds of boomerangs you can make out of cogs OR some you grab via story progression. Well, and you can glide and bite. And you can swim really fast when you're allowed.
So out of the way, the controls are gonna feel a bit off at first, but you get used to it after a bit. I'm fairly sure the controls work better than they did back in the PS2 days, but that may be my imagination. It definitely runs better at 60 fps during gameplay, but there's something kind of off about the new shading in some areas and on some of the models. Again worth noting that some of the models will look rough, because again, it is from 2002.
It's still a pretty game, and once you get the hang of it, it's pretty fun. The levels are gorgeous and fun to explore with all sorts of things hidden here and there. I literally found a sunken ship that I never saw 20 years ago when I last played! I'm pretty fond of Ship Rex, since it gives you lots to explore and it looks good too. I also really like the music, it really reminds me of home even though it's the opposite side if the world from home. It's very down to earth with Australian vibes at times. The voice acting is also pretty passable. Nothing quite Emmy worthy, but it's not terrible at the least. Something new in the HD version are skins! I've been having a ball trying them all out with my favorite being Ty's prototype skin.
Overall I think it's got a lot of soul and a lot to offer if you give it a fair chance. Its cheesy and fun and it captures something pretty unique for its genre. I'd give it a 7.5 or an 8/10. Honestly there's room for improvement but overall I'm just happy to have it back.
Now... to just get Ty 2, 3, and maybe 4 on consoles and a 5th one.

froslass please!
Tumblr media
Froslass!!!!!! The Snow Land Pokemon!
An Ice/Ghost-type and a branching evolution of Snorunt, Froslass is absolutely lovely. It’s based on the Yuki-onna, a well-known and frequently-dangerous youkai that appears as a woman in a white kimono on snowy nights that does things like freezing people to death and taking the livers out of children. There’s lots of differing accounts, though, and I suggest reading the Wikipedia article on them if you wanna know more! I feel Froslass captures the vibes of them perfectly, both aesthetically and in its dex entries.
Tumblr media
The conceptual idea behind Froslass is that a woman once died on a snowy mountain, with her regretful soul then possessing an icicle and forming Froslass. As with many Ghost-types, the veracity of this is somewhat questionable, particularly given it evolves from the non-ghostly Snorunt – but it’s an incredibly neat idea nonetheless. It freezes pokemon and humans it’s fond of, then displays their frozen bodies in its den, with a particular focus on handsome men. It also eats frozen souls, apparently, though I’m not sure how one freezes a soul. Its most common victims are hikers, though on nights of particularly severe blizzards, it’s also known to come down to human settlements – with the dex warning not to open your door if it knocks. It’s all very cool, and a lot of it seems derived from actual Yuki-onna legends! We actually see one example of its behaviour in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers games, with a famous Scizor explorer having been frozen in ice by a Froslass for decades before being saved by the protagonist’s team.
Tumblr media
Anyway!!!! The design! Froslass seems humanoid at first glance, but like Glalie, it’s actually mostly just a head. What appears to be its body is nothing more than a hollow appendage, and its sleeve-like arms connect directly to its head like hair. The “mask” of ice it wears subtly evokes a skull, and its expression has a slight hint of malice that seems appropriate for such a dangerous pokemon. Being based on Yuki-onna, its shape is also clearly intended to evoke a kimono, which it does quite well – it’s anatomically odd, yet still feels quite natural overall. The red band around its center, resembling an obi, is the only part that doesn’t really “match”, but it’s also some pleasant contrast.
Tumblr media
The shiny is overall the same, with a slightly different shade of blue and a soft fuchsia band instead of red. Although it’s not a dramatic shift, it actually looks much nicer, integrating the band much better into the design due to the consistent cool tones throughout. Normally I’m not a fan of shinies that barely change anything, but such a subtle change actually goes a long way here, and Froslass is actually one of my favourite shinies as a result!
But yeah, I positively adore Froslass. It’s kinda tied with Sneasel itself as my favourite Ice-type. It’s a rare case of a pokemon that seems actively dangerous – most pokemon, despite being clearly formidable, usually aren’t characterised as a direct threat to people’s livelihoods. The fact it displays its victims adds an additional dash of macabre, and I really can’t get enough of this spooky ice lady.
Would feed my soul to/10.
