of trust, betrayal, and maybe some accountability (long read)
Been gone. Life happens. Now back. It's a long read and I will put a (hopefully) good TLDR at the bottom
 Okay, first off. I guess the TCF/ fandom can all agree on one thing - the Henituse family does love each other but are very bad at displaying or communicating it. Just like in any human relationship, communication matters, and I believe we could have a somewhat functioning happy-ever-after family ending if that happened. But then again, where will be the lovely angst if everything went the ideal and happily ever ending? The familial love that exists among the members of the said famous (or infamous) family is unassailable and is widely acknowledged. While love is extremely important, many people seem to forget that another element is missing, which is also crucial (but not exclusive to love) in functioning relationships - trust.
I guess we can also agree that love makes a good foundation for good and ideal outcomes, especially in familial or romantic relationships. Based on the family's history, it's easy to say that trust is lacking, if not severely lacking, in those particular members. Distrust is also not farfetched to imagine in their interactions.
 Of course, the family patriarch caused the said problems. Whatever one thinks of the said patriarch, we call agree that he screwed big time in forming bonds and bridges in his family. Another sin he commit is his habit of kicking the issue down the road hoping it will be resolved somehow because of time. Let me be clear, time does mellow done the effect of anything (good or bad) that happens in a relationship. That is just the good side that can happen. But it can also produce a negative effect - the long, awkward silence of waiting it out can also create perceptions that are not healthy for the people involved and deepen the existing negative things. For me, the negative effect is what happened in the Henituse family. The problem started when ogCale was 8, and somehow the issue continued well before he reached his supposed 18th year (when KRS took over his body). So we have bad communication, mistrust connected to this faith of hoping things will sort out and waiting for the best (if that even exists at all).
 Okay, back to trust. For me, the deterioration of the father-son relationship was triggered by two events. First, Deruth left his child because he could not stand to deal with his grief and harbored feelings of resentment of his son over some physical resemblance the said son cannot control. Two, he brought a wife and child into his and og!Cale's home without any consideration of his own child's feelings. He created a relationship with two new people (cool) but also forced a relationship between og!Cale and the new addition to the family (not cool). (Sorry, Deruth fans but your boy does know how to mess up his self-confessed priorities in life.) Just one of those events can cause massive distrust and resentment. Some adult children that I know (yes, anectodal I know) cut off their parents for one of these reasons (even for less). That is how serious these actions can mean and how severe the consequences are if the said issues were not addressed.
 I guess even those who never had experienced any form of abandonment or neglect would not recognize that these two events, in og!Cale's eyes can be outright actions of betrayal from his father. And from distrust or lacking trust come forth feelings of further resentment and betrayal. Both are self-explanatory and extended not just to Deruth but to Violan, and the whole family unit. Of course, the biggest share of both goes to Deruth along with a particular feeling called parental rejection. And from this, it becomes a cyclic process where og!cale rightfully does feel mistrust even if his family is trying to reach him. After all, how can somebody envision that the same people who hurt him are trying to make amends if the said family still relies on bad communication (aka not initiating communication because how does someone expects a child to bring this complex situation and terrible power dynamic to his elders) that wasn’t addressed and no forms of remorse on their part were given to him?
 Some fans will bring out that og!Cale self-isolated him and that is the reason there has been no communication or progress in reconciliation. Point taken, but who doesn't practice self-isolation/distancing when somebody hurts them? This reasoning justifies that og!cale has to lead and do the legwork in repairing the relationship. That is unfair to expect for the injured party and the child in this scenario. The reason also excuses or displays the increasing lack of accountability from Deruth (and in a smaller instance Violan) as parents and adults.
 I will concede that the family does try to reach him but inefficiently. I don’t feel that they tried enough and exhausted every effort they had. I understand their fear, but the situation is hardly sustainable and beneficial to all. Everyone is on eggshells with a constant cloud of mistrust. The only reprieve everyone has is to continue with their fractured set-up.
 TLDR – trust is not love but is an important element ignored by everyone, Deruth loves kicking things down the road and crossing fingers on his relationships, distrust/lack of trust amplifies the negative feelings and interactions, and please stop asking for responsibility/accountability for the character who tries to be the mature adult (even if he wasn't the adult in the situation).

Star Wars Fun in the Sun Submission
This fic was written for @starwarsfandomfests “Summer Fun in the Sun” event. This event was really fun to participate in and I’m glad I joined in. I was given @anaisonfire to write for and chose to write some fluffy Jangobi for you with some bonding between Jango and the clones and Obi-Wan and young Boba. I hope you enjoy!
Find it on AO3 Here
.
.
The sound of the waves lapping at the sand of the beach and the feeling of warm sunlight against his bare skin had Obi-Wan almost dozing in his chair. It had been so long since he could just relax like this and soak in the beauty and sensations of a place instead of worrying about an attack but the war was finally over. A lucky break had come from Fox who had nearly faceplanted onto the council room floor in a combination of his haste to speak with them and complete exhaustion. He had overheard a conversation between Dooku and Palpatine revealing his plans and had recorded it on his helmet cam, giving the Jedi evidence against the now exposed Sith Lord. Dechipping started as soon as they located what it was Palpatine was talking about and within the month, the head had been cut off the snake. Without Palpatine’s funding, a lot of previously Separatist worlds returned to the Republic begging for another chance. Dooku was backed into a corner and he knew it, so he had willingly turned himself into the Jedi council, giving up information on Grievous that led to his capture and the droid army’s shutdown. Things still weren’t perfect. The flaws of the Republic were more obvious than ever. The corruption ran deeper than before. The Clones still didn’t have the rights they deserved.
“What has you frowning like that, cyare? We’re supposed to be on vacation.” Jango’s voice interrupted the downward turn his thoughts had taken and his lips turned up in a warm smile.
“Just thinking about the mess we are not supposed to be thinking about while here. The usual.” He said and Jango snorted when Obi-Wan looked over to soak in the sight of him. Despite seeing his face repeated a million times in the war, none looked quite as handsome as Jango’s own scarred appearance to him.
“That’s fair enough. I keep worrying about Boba.” Jango admitted looking out over where the 212th and 501st were all playing volleyball or splashing in the water or laying in chairs like Jango and Obi-Wan just soaking in the sun. Obi-Wan sighed. Boba was another issue they would have to figure out a solution to. Well, not Boba himself, but how to integrate him into the rest of the family.
“Where is he now?” Obi-Wan asked when he didn’t see the boy in question.
“Inside the hotel room moping. I left him some books to read that I thought he might like so hopefully he’s curled up with one of those at least. I wish I knew how to make it better. I suppose just time with the mind healers for all of us. Watching who he thought was me get their head cut off is not the sort of trauma that goes away in a few months.” Jango murmured rubbing his face and Obi-Wan reached out to squeeze his hand.
“I have to admit it was a big shock to all of us when Dooku revealed you were alive and that the person Mace killed had been one of the clones he had kept personally for purposes such as that. I’m just glad that you survived and that Boba had been able to be located and reunited with you.” He said seriously. Jango nodded.
“If Aurra weren’t already dead I’d kill her again for poisoning him to think I’d want him risking his life that way. I just want him happy and healthy.” He said, squeezing Obi-Wan’s hand back. The relationship that had somehow started between them, since Jango was recovered from where he had been imprisoned and had started helping fight for the clones and clean up the mess that he helped make, was the biggest surprise of all. Obi-Wan had always assumed that Jango was a cold heartless person to have made all the clones and treated them so indifferently, however he had realized that the opposite was in fact true. Jango cared greatly for the clones but he had been just as much a prisoner in Palpatine and Dooku’s schemes as they had and he had distanced himself to protect them from being targeted due to Dooku thinking he might use them against him. Finding out Jango had also been implanted with a rudimentary version of the chip also explained a few things and allowed him to be pardoned for the attempted hit on Padme. Of course, a lot of it was still on Jango’s shoulders and he was doing all he could to rectify his actions. Somehow in all the working together to help the clones, Obi-Wan and Jango had become close enough to the point that even Boba and Anakin had been calling them a couple behind their backs. Now they really were.
“Vacations don’t work well when we just lay around and let ourselves worry about things. How about we go join in on the death ball game the boys are playing instead?” He offered and Jango chuckled, kissing his cheek.
“That sounds like a great idea. Just don’t complain when my team crushes you.” He said getting up and waving over at Cody.
“Wait a minute! Cody is my commander! He’s going to be on my team!” Obi-Wan quickly hopped up to follow and get integrated into the teams. Obi-Wan ended up on Rex’s team while Jango had cockily gained Cody’s choice, Cody giving Obi-Wan a fake-apologetic smirk.
“You can’t even hold onto your lightsaber and you expect me to think you can keep a ball?” He teased with a lot of clones’ ‘ooo’s surrounding them.
“Oh it’s on now, my dear, you’ve made a grave mistake.” Obi-Wan had said, moving to huddle with his team. In the end, due to a non-Force use rule, the teams were evenly matched and the game never really got far in either team’s favor. They were all just having fun wrestling a ball from each other and trying to get it to the opposite team’s goal. Eventually, they all decided to split the difference and go change in Anakin’s room so he had to deal with all the sand instead of the losing team’s when they broke for lunch.
Jango managed to convince Boba to come out and join them for the meal and Obi-Wan smiled as the boy enthusiastically told his father about something he had been reading about snails. Seeing the difference in the way he acted when he had thought he lost his father compared to now was a shock. With Jango’s love and support, it was like looking at two different people. Although, the older bitter Boba was still in there and came out around the clones as shown when Cody sat beside Obi-Wan and started to chat causing Boba to quiet and withdraw.
“Can I go to the tide pools and look for the snails once we’re finished here, buir?” Boba asked and Jango nodded.
“Of course. Just be careful.” He agreed and Obi-Wan perked up at the perfect opportunity to try to bond a little with the boy.
“If you don’t mind, I’d love to come with you Boba. There are lots of little creatures there I’d like to see. Plus those bioluminescent snails sound really fascinating.” He said making sure to show he was listening to what Boba was saying by repeating some back.
“I guess it wouldn’t be bad to have you along. You can probably use your Force thingy to find them more easily.” Boba agreed after a moment of thought and Obi didn’t bother correcting him that the Force didn’t work that way. They quickly finished up the last of their meal and Boba led Obi-Wan towards the rocky area where the tide pools resided. Jango had declined in joining them with a knowing look at his Jedi and made an excuse of needing to call and check in on some work.
“Do you like ocean animals a lot, Boba?” He asked, trying to start a conversation to which the boy shrugged.
“I like all animals. There are so many planets with so many different ways for them to evolve and so many little differences even in species that are mostly the same. It’s cool to see what new things I can find out on each planet my buir and I visit. He used to make it a game we’d play together.” He admitted kicking a rock to splash into one of the little pools of water.
“Jango loves you a lot. You know that him helping the other clones doesn’t change his feelings about you, right?” Obi-Wan asked him and Boba grunted.
“I didn’t invite you to have you try to pick around in my brain. Now get to using your Jetii magics to find me some glowing snails or go back to making dopey looks at my dad and let me do my thing.” He grumbled and Obi-Wan rolled his eyes but did his best to feel around them to try to see if he could connect to any of the animals and figure out where the snails could be if they were even there at all.
While sensing the creature’s minds he felt them all diving deeper from what he figured was fear of the two humans encroaching on their homes however suddenly there was a faint rumbling and he gasped when Boba went barreling right into his stomach knocking him back into one of the ponds just in time to keep him from falling into a hole that opened up under where his feet had been.
Boba groaned as they both picked themselves up, equally soaked. “Dang it. Buir specifically told me not to fall in, now he’s going to laugh at me,” he whined.
“Thank you. I’m not even sure what just happened.” Obi-Wan confessed glad he had been in beachwear already, unlike Boba who was trying to wring out his t-shirt without removing it now.
“The rocks here aren’t round and solid like on most beaches. They’re flat and shift around with the tides as well like plates. It was in the book. The change in temperature at different points in the day causes the water currents to shift and then they move. I saw the fish diving and the rock around it start to move. I might not fully like you but my dad does, so letting you get trapped in a hole and drown seemed like the wrong move.” Boba said, stuffing his hands in the pockets of his shorts awkwardly.
“Well, I appreciate it nonetheless. It seems your extra reading saved my life.” He said with a chuckle, stroking his beard out of habit. “It would have been a shame to live through a whole war only to die to a little water and rock.” He said and Boba snorted but relaxed.
“The great Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi done-in by a change in tide while on vacation does sound like a great holonet headline.” He teased and they both continued their search for sea snails a little more carefully, eventually catching a few in a bucket to bring back and show Jango and the clones. Things weren’t perfect, but as Obi-Wan curled close to Jango’s warm chest that night, he found he was okay with that.

had a few more thoughts about the Honda family
and all the Souma parallels.
(and by “a few” I apparently meant “a lot”, I did not mean to write this many pages)
In the other post I’d made a comment about how Katsuya’s romance with Kyouko, severe age difference issues aside, is just plain pathetic, a point which I believe to be Upheld by canon. And I wanted to talk more about that, the implications of that, and how that further builds the Akito and Tohru parallel. And also, Why Tohru Can’t Love Her Mom And Kyou At The Same Time.
The ideal, in Fruits Basket, is that when you make a connection with one person who loves you and sees you, this will enable you to make further connections with the people around you. Tohru does a whole heck of a lot of this; for one example, see Yuki explaining this to Kisa in the liking-yourself speech. Yuki does some of this for bitty Haru and later for Machi. Kazuma does this for Kyou. And so on and so forth. The positive experiences are meant to have a ripple effect.
It’s important to be grateful for what you have (Yuki and Machi’s “just one person would be enough” scene), but it’s human to crave more than that (Kyouko telling Saki that it’s probably normal to want other people to accept you even if you already have a loving and supportive family). It is important to crave more than that.
This was, in fact, the entire point of the curse. God meets cat. Cat’s companionship allows god to form connections with other animals. Cat is dying and god decides that 13 friends is the perfect number of friends and starts the reincarnation cycle. Cat says, “god you never once left your house. I wanted to see you go down and make friends with the humans. I wanted to see you experience the world and laugh in the sunlight. God you made 13 new friends but you’re still lonely and closing yourself off to the world forever, this is wrong and I am sad.” The banquets were supposed to be the gateway drug of friendship and meaningful connections, not the place where 14 souls stagnated alone and isolated until it became a curse.
That same wrongness happens in Ren and Akira’s relationship, where finally making a connection with one person who loves you and sees you made their world smaller and smaller. It wasn’t healthy, probably because 1) they remained in a toxic environment, 2) Kureno implies that Ren has mental health issues and I assume those existed prior to Akira’s death and were exacerbated, rather than created by, her grief; also I can’t imagine she actually came from a non-toxic family herself, and 3) Akira’s “you’re going to die an early death and the only thing we need from you first is a successor” trauma. Akira never found anyone other than Ren who understood how upset he was. Ren never formed a relationship with anyone other than Akira, partly because she was now trapped in a toxic family that despised everything about her and she refused to Prove Them Right by leaving. They both viewed their child as an object rather than a person; Akira seeing proof that he and Ren were definitely OTP and the Souma could go shove it, and Ren seeing a Rival.
I have a memory that I said at some point—probably in a Talking About Shigure post—that Kyouko helps Katsuya connect with other people. But this, I think, is not really true. I was thinking of how Kyouko helps bridge the non-relationship between Katsuya and his father. But that’s just one person.
Really, Katsuya and Kyouko are more like Akira and Ren.
Marrying-someone-who-just-graduated-ninth-grade aside, the fact that Katsuya and Kyouko meet is genuinely a good thing. Katsuya finally connects with the humanity in another person. Kyouko is finally cared about as a person. Their misanthropic-jackass-and-abandoned-cat relationship improves both of them, probably. Their connection is definitely the reason Kyouko decides to go to high school and quit her gang. It’s harder to tell with Katsuya, but you could argue that seeing Kyouko struggling and fighting and screaming against the world, as honest about her joy as she is about her loneliness-channeled-into-rage, causes Katsuya to say screw it and pursue the career in pharmacy that he’s interested in, instead of fake-politely submitting to the world’s expectations and internally resenting and disdaining everyone around him.
Katsuya softens in his relationship with his father. Both Katsuya and Kyouko see their child as a person in her own right, Tohru, rather than an object. Katsuya, in fact, is adamant about that fact when Kyouko is terrified of her pregnancy—that they can treat their baby as her own person, and if they aren’t perfect parents and they hurt their child, they’ll apologize—because Tohru is a person and an equal—and admit that what they did was wrong and why it’s wrong. They’ll treat Tohru with the respect they should have gotten all along.
But I don’t think it ever goes any farther than that. Like god, the Honda family becomes more and more isolated.
Does Katsuya make any work friends? We don’t really get a complete view of their lives, because Takaya is one person who can only do so much and space is very precious, so we only see what’s crucial to the story. But I would be really surprised to find that Katsuya had made any close friends outside of Kyouko. I honestly doubt that he has anything more than casual work acquaintances. (In contrast, we repeatedly see Kyou together with the two guys who got names in the anime that I forgot in his class; his friendship with them doesn’t get explored much in the manga, presumably because it doesn’t do any heavy lifting for his character development, but Kyou clearly has casual friends who seek him out and whom he doesn’t mind being with. See also the way Saki and Arisa also interact with those guys as a part of the group, while Tohru really only interacts with Saki and Arisa or the Souma.)
And I don’t think Kyouko fares any better. Does she have any close friends, other than her husband and daughter? Does she make friends at work? I don’t know what kind of work Kyouko does, and if she would have the opportunity to take her breaks socializing with coworkers. But it appears she spends her work breaks in an abandoned area socializing with a first or second grader. Kyou is the only person, as far as we know, that mid-twenties Kyouko can start to open up to. She doesn’t get all the way there—Kyou doesn’t connect the dots until much later—but it’s the closest she comes to talking about how she hurt Tohru after Katsuya died.
Where are the family friends? It doesn’t strike me as weird that the Honda family doesn’t have them, because I have also grown up in a poorly socialized household, but even I am used to running into unfamiliar people in public who explain that they know my mom or dad. I’m pretty sure family friends are a normal thing, and that’s how you get aunts and uncles that aren’t related to you, much in the same way that I’m pretty sure it’s normal to be friends with your cousins (especially if they’re in a similar age range and live nearby) and it is very common for grandparents to bring grandchildren with them to the grocery store because the grandchildren are staying over and they’re having a relationship.
Where is anyone but the Honda family at at Kyouko’s funeral? Kyouko made friends with Arisa and Saki, but did she ever make friends with Saki’s parents? Where are Saki’s loving and supportive mother and father and grandmother when the Honda family is arguing about who has to take on the burden of Tohru? Where are they, if they knew of the bad blood between Kyouko and the Honda family (and the disinheritance between Kyouko and the Katsunuma family), to sweep over Tohru’s protestations and tell her that it will all be fine, they’ll make it work out (they packed up and moved house for Saki, after all), it’s not Tohru’s job to worry about being a burden, it’s the job of people who love her to take care of her?
It can be both “because of the necessity of the plot” and “because they didn’t know.”
Tohru inherits this small, isolated world. And because of the trauma of being abandoned by her grieving, depressed, absolutely-not-coping mother, Tohru picks up on that Souma curse mentality. Tohru’s dad left, and Tohru’s dad tried to take her mom with her, leaving her with no one but Grandpa (who is not intimately part of their world but is not fully outside it either). Tohru’s dad is now a Rival. Tohru’s dad is now an Outsider. Clearly, a bond with an Outsider weakens the True Bond that Tohru had with Kyouko. Clearly, Tohru’s dad is Not Needed (because the other alternative is that Tohru is Not Needed). Clearly, only one of them can have Kyouko.
And it’s going to be Tohru.
Tohru picks up Katsuya’s fake-polite speech, equally disingenuously but from the opposite direction (ie, Katsuya was fake-polite to be an asshole, and Tohru is genuinely polite but faking the words). Tohru is pretty sure this is a form of wicked manipulation (much like Yuki is convinced that “be kind unto others as you would have them be kind unto you” is a form of wicked manipulation). Tohru keeps up with it anyway. Kyouko, as Kyou suggests, was probably comforted by this; rather than going full Akira “you exist to prove that I lived and loved a woman”, seeing Katsuya’s mannerisms in Tohru reminds her that her husband did exist without having to erase Tohru as a person. Kyouko does a lot of growing on her own, but with no support system and no friends outside the family and being fresh-out-of-college age, it’s not surprising that she fails to talk with Tohru about this, and tell Tohru that she knows why Tohru’s doing this, she knows how she hurt Tohru and it was wrong, you don’t have to do this anymore. This is a hurt between them, a grief, that they never talk about, even though they both know it’s there and Kyouko tries to smother it with love and affection and Tohru tries to shut it up in a box of denial.
Tohru’s world is now just Tohru and Kyouko. Tohru doesn’t make any friends until middle school. We know she gets bullied and doesn’t fit in throughout her entire school life. She is a riceball in a fruits basket and probably just manages to scrape by in conformity culture. When she does make her first friends, Arisa and Saki don’t count as Outsiders who compromise Tohru’s bond with her mom because Arisa and Saki are also misfits on the fringe. They are outcasts Tohru can bring into the circle. They are all monsters together, like the cursed Soumas (the only reason no one refers to Akito as a monster to her face, the way they do the rest of the Zodiac, probably has less to do with the fact that Akito doesn’t transform and more to do with the fact that Akito being in a position of power is useful for their own ends, so best not to undermine the head of the family by pointing the whole monster thing out).
And then Tohru’s mom dies.
Tohru isn’t god and she can’t make an eternal banquet. Tohru doesn’t know how to process her grief and how not to fall to pieces. Tohru knows how to empathize with other people, but she doesn’t know how to be vulnerable. Did she remember Kyouko wanting to follow Katsuya, and think about doing the same? But Tohru also wants to keep living, somehow.
So she makes her mom not be gone. Her mom is dead, Tohru knows that, just like Akito knows that Akira’s soul isn’t in the box choosing her over Ren and showing her the way to happiness. But maybe. So she talks to the portrait of her mom. She tries to rescue her mom from suffocating inside a mudslide. She takes her mom on holiday to the onsen. Her mom gets kidnapped once by Hiro. Tohru’s mom is definitely not gone. Tohru and her mom definitely still have an eternal bond. Tohru’s mom will always be first in her heart, so that Tohru will always be first in her mother’s heart. Tohru will never abandon her. Tohru will never leave her behind.
(Tohru will never be left behind.)
Tohru’s world is just Tohru and her mom.
Tohru has two best friends, Arisa and Saki, but she won’t let them in. She won’t depend on them. She won’t tell that that her grief is crushing her and that she’s living in a tent because she’s terrified of being abandoned. Tohru makes a lot of new friends in the Souma family, and she’s very happy, but she won’t let them in either. Tohru can’t open up to any of them freely.
I don’t think I saved it anywhere the survived the computer death, but I saw at least one post in the fandom talking about the growing disappointment of the reboot anime, and they had a valid point, so I’ll bring that in now.
I really like the reboot, but I am losing my passion in the final season. Adapting a story from one media to another is hard, and at the beginning I thought they were doing a good job. Small things were being cut, scenes were being rearranged and stitched together, but there was a definite purpose behind it. Instead of literally following each chapter, each episode tried to be a self-contained theme in the same way a manga chapter would be. Because themes repeat again and again in Fruits Basket in a slow build, this was working well. But small things that didn’t quite fit got cut. Scenes I liked and was sad not to see, but that I accepted had to be left out to make the episodes stronger.
But they’ve been piling up and piling up. Small holes have accumulated into big plot holes that the third season is tripping over. I’m sad that we don’t see the small progressions of Yuki and Machi’s relationship, the quiet scenes that show Machi is trying to pay attention to Yuki the way he has paid attention to her, and also all the Mogetas. I’m sad Komaki is the new manga-only character. If we don’t get Kyouko’s full backstory, we lose a lot of the context that’s in this post. I could go on and on.
But most importantly, as that someone else pointed out, we missed out on the progression of Kyou and Tohru’s flirting. It’s too late to cram all of that into a montage episode, and so now we’ve been given episode after episode of Mom Tohru, and hardly any Tohru Struggling With Romance In Addition To Struggling With Grief before suddenly everyone is confessing their love and I’m not as into it in the anime as I am in the manga.
So many of the Souma love and accept Tohru, but Tohru remains an Outsider—not because of the curse, but because she hasn’t formed close friendships with them. Tohru has a lot of people among the Souma she likes who like her, but she’s always a Mom to them. Tohru shares some of her own pain with them, but it’s shared for their benefit, not for Tohru’s own catharsis. Tohru shares so she will be loved, not so that she will be accepted.
Except Kyou.
Kyou, who looks at Tohru and thinks, “I’m pretty sure she’s that lonely person even now, even while she’s smiling and genuinely enjoying every moment with us.” Kyou, who’s falling in love with Tohru. Kyou, whom Tohru’s falling in love with.
Kyou is the only one that Tohru takes a desperate risk with. Kyou is the only one Tohru ~disillusions~ and ~disappoints~ in the hope that he’ll accept her regardless.
Kyou is the only one Tohru tells, “I don’t talk about my dad because I kicked him out of the family. I know my dad loved us and I loved him back, but I pretend to talk like him so my mom will forget about him and love me instead. He came between me and my mom and now I pretend he doesn’t exist. And I know I’m an awful person for behaving like that, so I keep his picture and pretend I don’t, and I pretend he’s the Bad Guy who earned it.”
The idea that Tohru can’t love both her mom and Kyou is, in a way, true. (I think that same post I’ve been referencing also talked about how dropping the budding romance also dropped a lot of the clues that this is Tohru unable to process her grief? Which is also very true. But if Tohru has the Souma mindset, then actually she has a legit point about not being able to love two people at once despite being a very loving person. Both can be true. Multitudes.)
Kyou is an Outsider to the world of Tohru and her mom. And if Tohru chooses to love him, it will weaken her bond with her mom, which is predicated on loving her mom more than anyone else. If she expands her world to include him in it, she will be betraying her mom. Tohru will be the Bad Guy who left her mom behind and abandoned her. Tohru will be her own villain, condemned for the same crimes she pinned on her dad.
Kyou 100% gets where she’s coming from with this, because he turns this exact argument on her when she confesses to him and he panics (akin to when Tohru chases him down in his true form and he slashes her and, in the reboot, yeets her into the lake, so that she will be hurt so bad she’ll never pity/love him again). He asks her if her love for her mom—her bond—was just a lie.
Tohru making friends after Kyouko’s death has been a lot like Akito letting Yuki and Kyou out into the world, certain that it would drive them back to the bond. Yuki getting character development is a huge betrayal. Tohru wanting to be together with Kyou, when she should only want to be together with her mom, is a huge betrayal.
Tohru has no model for expanding her world. She’s good at loving people, but bad at letting them in (Kyouko was bad at that too—like Mom Tohru, she was very good at sharing anecdotes about her violent youth, but very bad about sharing how she’d failed Tohru as a mom). Like Akito, she only really knows the bond—the certainty that her mom would love her. She’s been so terrified of not being loved that she’s acted this entire time like her mom is still around. When Kyou’s love is a possibility, she can only conceptualize it as a betrayal of her relationship with her mother.
It always seemed a bit too abrupt that Tohru looked at Akito with the knife and went “oh shit we’re literally the same”, but now that I’ve thought this all out, it makes eloquent sense. The whole time Tohru’s been working against the curse, she’s been in denial about her own blessing-burden-curse. Now that she’s just admitted it and had it thrown back in her face, she can look at Akito and see another person in an insular little world, isolated and lonely and walled-off from the world. Of course Tohru desperately wants to make friends with knife-wielding Akito—she just decided to let go of her ties to her mother that were suffocating her, and take her first steps into the world, and got immediately dumped by the person she loves. Of course she wants to make friends with someone who knows exactly where Tohru’s coming from and how terrifying what Tohru just did is and how awful it is to be rejected even though she’s got other friends she loves out here in this world she’s decided to finally step into.
Tohru is so damn lonely, and Akito is there, also lonely and screaming and crying and undeniably human.
(Smile, Tohru tells herself in the hospital. Smile and tell Kyou you were happy to meet him and just let him go. Don’t be a curse. Smile and let him find his own happiness. Which is more or less the same struggle Akito is also going through. But maybe they’re going through it together. Maybe they used their words, together, when they couldn’t confide in anyone else. Although it feels a bit unlikely that Tohru let herself break down about Kyou in front of Akito, and Akito already had one pity-party in front of Momiji and may not have wanted to burden Tohru with a second.)
One thing I really love about Fruits Basket Another is that Hajime alludes to the fact that Kyou probably won’t inherit Kazuma’s dojo after all.
Kyou inheriting the dojo is something both Kyou and Kazuma have wanted, and it gives me many warm fuzzies. It is very narratively satisfying. The dojo, while Souma property, is not actually part of the main estate.
What I love is that Kyou probably won’t take over the dojo specifically because he and Tohru have made so many friends in their new town that they don’t want to pick up and leave. Kyou finally succeeds in freeing Tohru from that small, lonely world, much like he’s been freed from the fate of the Cat Room. Their relationship enriches them personally and also enables them to make so many new connections. Kyou has friends at the dojo! Tohru has friends at work maybe! Friends where they buy groceries, friends among the parents of their children’s classmates, friends outside of their extended Souma family! They’ve kept ties that don’t hold them back and made new ties that don’t weaken or steal away any of their old ties!
When they left Tokyo, Tohru was prepared to go anywhere as long as it was with Kyou. Now, she and Kyou both don’t want to leave because their world is so much larger than just their nuclear family and they’ve put down roots. They’ve seen each other not only lonely in the moonlight and worn thin by death and loss, but they’ve gotten up and gone down the mountain to where the people live and made friends among them, laughing in the sunlight. Just like the cat always uggghhhhh I’m not crying I’m just so damn happy for them I can’t

what would you say are the differences between 616 Tony and MCU Tony? 🤔
Hi anon! Many people have talked about this and I'm certainly not the authority on the topic, but I’ll try my best to explain some of the major differences that I have noticed! Thank you for asking and I’m sorry it took me so long to answer you.
Important to note: neither version of Tony has had a totally consistent characterization. Depending on who you ask and which comics/movies they've consumed, they might give you a different answer here and not be wrong.
616 Tony is even harder to put into one box because his character has been around since Tales of Suspense in the 1950s. That’s a long time. Things have changed over time, under different writers, changing political atmospheres, and outside pop culture influence (including influence from the MCU, unfortunately, in recent years.) You get the picture. So I’ll be making some generalizations and try to be clear about which eras I’m speaking when I make these comparisons, but ultimately, if someone wanted to be contrarian, you could probably refute a lot of what I say here if you cherry pick canon. Which is fair enough! That’s sort of the fun of comics, there’s so much to choose from and something for everyone.
So here are some observations from me, under the ‘read more’.
1. Physical Appearance
This is sort of an easy one, but worth mentioning!
MCU Tony does not look like 616 Tony. RDJ is great, but he would not be most 616 fans’ casting choice on looks alone. MCU Tony is tan, a Malibu man, with brown hair and brown eyes, and RDJ has sort of round facial features (a funny sloped nose, big, round eyes, round forehead, not a particularly sharp or classically “superhero masculine” face.) As you may know, this lends well to certain fanworks and tropes, such as Tony having Bambi eyes.
Tumblr media
Or Tiny Tony. He is not actually canonically small, but he's smaller in the MCU than in 616 and from what I can tell, a portion of fandom has latched onto that. He’s a grown man, but RDJ is pretty short, and of slighter build than 616 Tony. RDJ is 5′9, but they make him act in heels, and I believe his canon MCU height is 5′11. Another popular trope I’ve seen is shrinking Tony in fanfic/fanart for a dramatized height difference with Steve, making him weak or fragile; this is fine because everyone has their own taste, but for the official record, he’s a capable, strong guy! Especially in earlier stages of the MCU, in which he’s a bit younger. Tony isn’t just a brain; he carries out his plans with his own two hands! He builds his armor, he remodels his lab, he survives hand to hand combat when he doesn’t have the armor. Muscles!
Tumblr media
616 Tony is 6′1 without armor and 6′6 in armor (making him taller than his 616 Steve counterpart in armor and very close to the same height out of armor!) 616 Tony is generally paler with black hair (sometimes the classic blue-black I love so much) and blue eyes, and it obviously depends on the artist, but he has a pretty typically ‘masculine’ face and build. Generally he is drawn with a squared jaw and a high bridged nose (such as in the Extremis storyline, or drawn by Marquez), but again, this varies from artist to artist! Here's some examples of 616 Tonys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wait, you might be saying, but I have seen comic panels where Tony has brown hair/brown eyes!
Yep. Due to a combination of forgetfulness, inconsistency, and the MCU bleeding into the general consciousness of the comics, sometimes Tony is randomly depicted in the image of RDJ, or if not in his image, at least visually inspired by the MCU-- hair color and style, eye color, dialogue, etc.
Tumblr media
616 fans don’t typically love this; he’s very handsome when drawn this way, of course, (look at him!) But it isn’t really the same character.
Also, MCU Tony has (at least for some of his movies) a reactor built into his chest. While 616 Tony has, at times, been more or less physically connected/dependent to his tech, he doesn’t have the built in reactor (most generally speaking, there are times in comics when he temporarily has the tech built in, but this isn’t really the status quo.)
2. Relationship with parents/ family history
While it is definitely implied in the MCU that Howard was not a good father to Tony, (such as in Iron Man 2 when Tony says “You're talking about a man whose happiest day of his life was shipping me off to boarding school” and “He was cold, calculating, never told me he loved me, never even told me he liked me”), Tony has a different sort of attitude toward Howard in MCU than in 616. It’s kind of weird, and hard to discuss. To me, it seems implied that MCU Howard was emotionally abusive to Tony based on what Tony does say about his childhood, and yet, the films kind of randomly give Howard weird moments of “Well, he tried his best and deep down he loved me the whole time!” forgiveness. MCU has a Howard kink and I'm very cringe-face emoji about it.
For example, Iron Man 2 shows that old film reel of Howard talking about how Tony is the greatest thing he ever created, and in Endgame, when Tony goes back in time, he meets Howard and has a very weird interaction with him in which Howard declares he would do anything for his son, (to his deeply damaged son who is a new father himself.) Yet, for all his talk, it's his actions that speak, and his actions left Tony damaged, traumatized, and emotionally inept at forming healthy relationships. So.
Sorry. I’m a little bitter. I'm just uncomfortable with how they sort of set up an abuse history but then treated it kind of lightly and Howard gets off the hook as "well, he tried his best" without really acknowledging the hurt he caused.
Avengers: Endgame 2019
I won't go super in depth into the abuse stuff because it's a little touchy and could take up a lot of this post. But.
I’m not against any reconciliation and I do appreciate the fact that a lot of times, victims of abuse feel a desire to forgive and reconnect with their abuser-- my issue with the MCU depiction of Tony and Howard is that Tony never really gets the vindication of his abuse being recognized for what it was before he forgives Howard. To me, that’s not forgiveness as kind of... gaslighting himself that it wasn't as bad as he remembered his own experience being, because of a sense of nostalgia and grief. It’s not the same, and I have issues with it.
However, a lot of my opinion is based on subtext and it is just my opinion; with depictions of abuse, different people are going to react differently, and other people may have found these scenes touching and gotten something positive out of them, and that's totally fine too!
It’s also a bit difficult to talk about Tony’s relationship with Howard in 616, for a few reasons: shifting timelines, lots of canon that I have not read all of, and the fact that it really is difficult to sum up such a complicated relationship.
Right off the bat, I’ll address the basics. I used the same scene in another ask, and I think it's frequently cited in any meta regarding Howard, but in Iron Man Vol. 1, we see more into Tony’s childhood and see Howard verbally abusing his family, drunk, at the dinner table.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Iron Man Vol. 1 #285
We get this scene with adult Tony’s retrospective commentary on how his own issues that he blamed himself for were actually a cycle starting with his father, the insecurity and abuse and alcohol, and that he realizes how much this has influenced him. Both MCU Tony and 616 Tony have some form of “stop the cycle of shame” arcs, but I don’t really see how this works narratively in the MCU because Tony makes excuses for Howard and continues to blame himself for a lot of his own personal struggles, whereas I think there’s just a bit more nuance in 616.
But uh. This isn’t totally true, and in recent years, things got real weird. I choose to ignore this chapter of canon, but in the Dan Slott run, Tony Stark: Iron Man, Tony’s whole backstory gets imploded. For one thing, the little of Tony’s childhood it shows in a flashback is uh. Uh. Well, it’s certainly out of character compared with previous 616 material, depicting Tony as an overly confident poor sport.
Tumblr media
Basically, Tony is adopted. Tony has an evil brother. Tony’s biological parents make an appearance, as do his ‘classic’ parents, Howard and Maria. It’s just weird. It’s kind of out there. I’m honestly not a huge fan of this and ignore a lot of it, but it is certainly a difference between MCU and 616.
3. Personality
I’m going to be very general. Both Tony’s have an outer self which they present to the public and an inner self, but they’re a bit different. Both Tony’s have struggled with self loathing, but I think MCU Tony’s actual self worth is a bit higher, even just at some points in time. Even if his ego is part of his facade, I think he does believe some amount of the “I’m awesome”, even if just when it applies to his own work/inventions/saving people. Not to say that these moments of fluctuating self esteem make him egotistical, but this combined with his egotistical act and snarky, non-stop sassy dialogue, he’s quite different in general personality from 616 Tony, who is much more reserved.
Some more recent iterations of 616 Tony have been adapted to reflect the snark of the MCU, but he’s not so snarky and he tends to approach things more seriously. This is not a dis on MCU Tony; I think MCU Tony uses false ego and excessive sassy jokes as a means to deflect and control, which I think is very interesting and it’s nice to see this explored more in depth in fic where you get to see the thought process behind the bravado. MCU Tony is a partier, a good times guy, especially during Iron Man 2, in which he really does disregard consequences to have fun (driving his race car, partying drunk in his suit, letting pretty  girls play with the armor, shooting off repulsor blasts for fun in a crowded room); I’m not bashing MCU Tony-- I think he had psychologically understandable reasons for behaving this way, the man was dying-- but 616 Tony really doesn’t act this way generally, and I think it’s a personality difference more than a difference of one being “better.”
616 Tony handles his stress differently, and they just have different psychological patterns, I think. I’m coming up kind of blank trying to think of a good comparable 616 arc, (sorry, I’m brain dead) but a less-than-perfect  example might be Tony’s brain delete arc; he’s “dying”, like in Iron Man 2 he  knows his expiration date, (circumstances are quite  a bit different), but he throws himself more into work, into a cause, and as he really fall apart, we  see him spiral into self doubt, remorse, fear, and insecurity, sort of falling into  himself with lots of manly tears and calling himself pathetic.
(Some things happen in this arc that a lot of people find Gross. I also find these events gross. But. I don’t count the sex in “World’s Most Wanted” as partying to cope with personal mortality, because I think both character involved are in “end of the world” mode, and it’s more seeking intimacy for comfort than partying to numb the hurt. Does this distinction make sense? No? Perfect, moving on.) 616 Tony is generally much more humble.
Whereas MCU Tony, I think, tries to outrun those feelings via parties or making dozens of new suits, or seeking comfort by comforting others! Gifting things to people, building things for people, highly personalized individual living quarters, teaching Nebula games and trying to show her a fun time when they were in peril together.
They have some traits in common, for sure! But canon being inconsistent both in the MCU and in 616, my observations aren’t the rule, because I’m kind of cherry picking and going based on limited memory. But off the top of my head, they’re both extravagant gift givers! Recall Tony gifting Pepper the giant bunny in Iron Man 3, and compare this with Tony carrying a mile high pile of Christmas gifts after shopping with Rumiko in Iron Man Vol. #3.
I would say that while both Tony Starks are considered humanitarians, this is much more fleshed out and supported by canon in 616. Some examples of his philanthropy in the MCU: Tony makes charitable donations of art and money, Tony has an organization which provides disaster relief/cleanup which is referenced in Spider-Man Homecoming, Tony has an MIT grant for students and staff members. But to be honest, a lot of his MCU philanthropy is only mentioned in passing, or is largely handled by other people on his behalf and on his dollar.
In 616, we see Tony using charity almost as a means of therapy: it’s something he does very privately, not in the public eye (at least, not always), and it’s something deeply personal to him. One example that immediately comes to mind is Tony’s home for disadvantaged girls in Iron Man Vol. 3, and we see scenes of Tony basically driving the streets at night, picking up underage prostitutes, feeding them and listening to their stories before bringing them to a home he’s established where he knows all the residents, and provides educational opportunities and protection.
Another more recent example in canon that the Tony fandom loves is that Tony canonically holds babies at an orphanage. Sorry I don’t have panels for all of this, this section got long and I have been working on answering this ask in a very scattered way for a very long time.
Both Tony’s are romantics, I literally could write a whole other post about their canon love life similarities and differences, but I will briefly say that while MCU Tony does the long on and off, and eventual ultimate commitment, to Pepper Potts, 616 Tony is a serial monogamist; he is always falling in love, and he’s definitely not a playboy, but the hero-ing, self loathing, and lifestyle make it very hard for him to keep anyone in his life, and most of his partners fuck his life up and betray him. Needless to say, 616 Tony is not married, and certainly not to Pepper Potts.
Oh, and I guess this is so obvious I almost forgot to include it, but a huge similarity between both iterations of Tony is that they both constantly use their own life as a bargaining chip, and will pretty much die for anything. Or be the bad guy for a good reason (at least, in his own mind... see Civil War, or Hickmanvengers; 616 Tony, especially, does not shy away from making the hard decisions, and this leads to a lot of guilt and tension in his  relationships-- often with Steve because 616 Steve/Tony angst fans are well fed, I guess)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember that time Tony had Steve’s mind wiped because Tony felt that Steve’s inflexible morality might hinder the Illuminati’s ability to save the world? And it eats Tony up inside and erupts into a homicidal fight when Steve finally gets his memory back? Me too.
Tony Stark as a character is defined by sacrifice, both of his own life but also of his own happiness and reputation and conscience, I think, in a lot of ways, and we see this in many universes. I could go on about Tony’s propensity for sacrifice in the less obvious ways, because I think in terms of heroic sacrifice, Tony has done a lot that other heroes wouldn’t be able to do because of moral inflexibility and conflicting philosophical schools of thought; Tony really is the “whatever it takes” type, and often believes the ends justify the means if he deems a threat worse than the potential wrong that could be done in preventing the threat. We see this a little bit in the MCU in the creation of Ultron, and in Civil War with the Accords. But there’s a whole lot more going on there I don’t want to get into.
4. Alcohol
MCU Tony’s alcoholism is never really explicitly explored. He is shown drinking in Iron Man 1, and in Iron Man 2 he drinks a lot and makes a fool of himself publicly, but MCU Tony doesn’t get any specific narrative arc focused on his drinking, and if I recall correctly, I don’t think he ever refers to his drinking as alcoholism in the movies? Also, while his binge drinking and embarrassing behaviors ostensibly stop after the events of Iron Man 2, he is shown drinking on screen at least one other time after that which I can remember, and it wasn’t a “falling off the wagon” moment, and an alcoholic in recovery such as 616 Tony would not take a drink casually. This article sheds a little light on some decisions made about Tony and alcohol in the MCU.
Alcoholism is a huge part of 616 Tony’s personality, which I went a bit more into depth about in this post, so I won’t repeat myself too much.
5. Their relationships with the Iron Man armor
A few points here: MCU Tony is famous for the “I am Iron Man” line being repeated throughout the franchise after he blows his own secret in the end of the first movie. MCU Tony sees himself as one with Iron Man, and the suit is the tech that enables him to be this version of himself. He sees Tony Stark and Iron Man as inextricable: you cannot separate them, and his identity is public. He, as Tony Stark, is an Avenger.
You may remember MCU Tony’s induction into the Avengers; in Iron Man 2, Nick Fury is forming the Avengers and tasks the Black Widow with going undercover to assess Tony to be a part of a hypothetical initiative. “Iron Man yes, Tony Stark no” and the comments about Tony as a narcissist may be funny, but the fact is, the snark and erratic personality of MCU Tony at the time of the formation of the Avengers in the movies is not at all like the Tony of the comics, at the time of the Avengers being formed.
In 616, things are quite a bit different! Tony invents the Iron man armor to save himself (like in the MCU) and uses it for hero-ing, but in secret. He works very hard to protect his identity as Iron Man, and for a long time, as far as the world is concerned, Iron man is a mystery man piloting armor built by Tony, hired as Tony’s personal body guard, (hence the 616 Steve/Tony fandom’s proclivity for identity porn as a trope!) When the Avengers form, Iron Man is the Avenger, close friends with the Avengers, (particularly Steve!) and Tony Stark is just the benefactor of the Avengers, providing them with a place to live and finances with which to operate.
In the very early days, Tony did not have the “reactor” like in the MCU, but his chest plate did keep him alive, leading to some very dramatic shots of Tony charging up using a wall socket, lamenting the plight of a secret hero.
Tumblr media
616 Tony, generally, and especially in some of these earlier comics, was quite reserved, rather serious, and very angsty, (in private of course.) He may be wealthy, but speaking generally, he’s much less ostentatious than MCU Tony, less of a show off, less into flashy things and grand gestures. Of course, this isn’t always true in the comics, and some iterations of Tony are more like this than others, but MCU Tony is showier, sillier, and more of a fun-times guy. Any MCU fan would find those panels quite contrary to the Tony Stark you know:
Tumblr media
Iron Man 1
Tumblr media
Iron Man 2
I think I would say that while MCU Tony sees himself and the Iron Man identity and the  armor as all being inextricably connected, we see a bit more compartmentalization with 616 Tony, who pretends that the armor is a whole separate person for years when his identity was private, and we see instances in older and newer comics, in which Tony  is uncomfortable with some aspect of himself as Iron Man (for instance, during the second drinking arc, Tony temporarily swears off being Iron Man entirely, or for another example, when Tony is in a comma and Tony AI exists during Secret Empire, Tony “lives” in the Iron Man suit, and I think this could be interpreted as a meta parallel to Steve during this arc; Steve has had some core aspect of his character inverted, Captain America becoming Captain Hydra, so Tony experiences a similar inversion-- Tony Stark and Iron Man are forcibly merged, in a way that Tony seems deeply uncomfortable with, if his digital drinking relapse is any indication. But I digress; sorry for the tangent.)
Okay this post is inexcusable long, and very, very tangential, and I don’t feel like I’ve really covered everything I wanted to. But it has been sitting in my inbox for too long and if I don’t post it now I never will, so I hope this long, rambling thing has been a little bit helpful to you! Thank you so much for asking, I had a lot of fun rambling about this.
If you want to read a similar post, but well written and organized, with other insights, this post by Sineala answers a similar question!

Dad (Mandalorian Family fic)
Tumblr media
Masterlist || Request
Summary: While preparing for bed the one night, the child finally says his first word ever to the Mandalorian, leaving him an emotional mess.
Warnings: Straight up fluff. No reader at all. It’s just a happy family moment between mando and the child.
Word Count:  2,972
a/n: This is a fic I’ve had in my drafts since I started this blog. There’s a lot of Din’s feelings on being a parent and wanting to hear the child’s first word. Of course when it finally happens it makes him the happiest dad in the entire galaxy.
Time had seemed to fly by quickly for the Mandalorian while he was caring for the child. It seemed to pass by without a care, as he spent each day ensuring the safety of the little one to the best of his limited parenting ability. At first, he struggled with his new fatherhood task, never having to tend to the needs of someone so small and young. The skills he had honed and developed didn’t include looking after others. He had learned to shoot a blaster, not how to rock a child to sleep. So, he had to quickly develop his parenting skills, something he never thought he would have or even get to do.
  The idea of him becoming a dad was something that didn’t seem to be in his future, as it didn’t look like his life would ever involve being a parent. It wasn’t as if he wasn’t able to have children due to his religion or way of life. Many Mandalorian had their own families and it was considered quite a happy affair in their culture. Din still remembered how excited the others in the covert had become when one of the couples there had announced that they were expecting a child.
  The biggest celebration he had seen in a long time had occurred from the news, and it had been the talk among everyone for months after the child had been born. So, the idea of a Mandalorian having a child wasn’t the problem for him, rather it was the thought of him having his own child that was the issue. Him having a child just seemed like a fairytale and it was something he thought he would never have for himself.
  This wasn’t because he did not want children or even a family. In fact, Din Djarin had always been fond of children and had wanted to have a family of his own someday. There were many nights where he would be in his cot, wrapped tightly in his thin sheets to keep warm, dreaming of having a family to care for and love. The idea of having a family was something he held dearly and close to his heart.
  So, him thinking he wouldn’t become a parent wasn’t due to any dislike of children, instead it was due to his struggle with building relationships. He had always found that he had problems with creating connections and bonds with other people. He even had trouble forming close relations with other Mandalorians, making him feel quite isolated from the rest of the convert at times. The type of life he lived wasn’t an easy one. It didn’t leave a lot of room for very close relationships with other people to form easily. Thus, he figured that he would have to accept that the likelihood of him forming a family was slim to none.
  Then, of course, he met the child.
   The child becoming a part of his life was an unexpected blessing that had instantly changed it all in one go. Suddenly, the possibility of him being a dad and having his own family was right before him. The little green womprat with large ears and round eyes was the whole reason it had happened. Din wouldn’t trade his adoptive child for anything in the Galaxy.
  After it had become apparent that he had officially become a father to the child, he had noticed that more people had taken an interest in his little clan of two. People of all sorts, from other Mandalorians in the convert to random merchants on various planets, had asked him many things in regards to the child. They were all interested in his adoptive son and his newly obtained status as a parent. One of the few common things being brought up was if the child had said his first word. A question that now brought annoyance and unease when asked to him.
  When Din would bring up that the child still couldn’t speak Galactic Basic, he would receive a few concerned looks and the odd nod of understanding. He would usually tell them that it didn’t matter that much to him and that it wasn’t too great of a worry. He was more occupied with making sure the child stayed alive and healthy. Whether or not the child spoke wasn’t the greatest concern for him at the moment, which seemed to both shock and confuse many of the people he spoke to.
  If he was being honest with himself, the Mandalorian didn’t even realize that a child’s first word was something a parent was supposed to be looking forward to. Only once had it been brought up to him for probably the fifth time did he realize that most people held it in great importance. Being new to this whole parenting thing meant that there were many things he didn’t know in regards to raising a child and this happened to be one of them. In his defence, it wasn’t like anyone had taught him these types of things while training to be a Mandalorian.
  He did his best to act like he didn’t care when the child would say his first word. He would usually try to say that it didn’t bother him. The Mandalorian didn’t ever need to hear the child speak, as long as the child remained safe and well. At least, that’s what he tried to tell himself and others.
  Contrary to what he wanted everyone to believe, the idea of being able to hear the child’s first word actually sent a jolt of excitement and joy straight to his heart. Din had found himself looking forward to the day where the child would first speak. The Mandalorian oftentimes wondered exactly what the child’s first word would end up being. He had even begun to hope that his first word would be something along the lines of ‘Dad’.
  However, more and more days would pass by without the child ever saying a word. Beginning to make it feel like the child would never say anything.
  The Mandalorian knew, deep down, that there was a huge possibility the child may never speak. He had very little information regarding the child’s species. For all he knew, the little one’s kind didn't speak at all or didn’t have the ability to speak Galactic basic. It wouldn’t be the first time he had met a species that couldn’t. So, the chance of him never hearing the child speak was there and he honestly wouldn’t have been surprised if it turned out to be that way.
  There were some days while travelling through hyperspace, watching the stars dash by the Razor Crest’s windows, where Din would just sit with the child, trying to coax him into speaking. The hope of the child being able to speak, though small, still remained within him.
  The bounty hunter would often first watch the child play about the area from where he was sitting in the pilot's chair. The little green child would usually end up mumbling at him in gibberish between little fits of giggles while playing with whatever new thing he could find in the cockpit.
  Eventually, he would maneuver himself so he was sitting across from the child on the floor. Sitting on the floor was a bit strange in the beskar armour that he wore. It made him awkward and stiff while he sat cross-legged on the metal flooring of the ship, but he put up with it for the child’s sake.
  “You know, every child has their first word eventually,” Din had said one time, thinking back to the couple at the covert fawning over their own toddler’s first word. “It’s kind of a big deal for a parent to hear their child's first word.”
  He wasn’t particularly talking to the child about it, he was more talking to himself, allowing the child to continue whatever game he had entertained himself with. Like most days, the child had decided to roll one of the control panels knobs around on the floor, stopping to pick it up with glee each time he had managed to catch the knob as it tried to escape.
  “Do you want to try speaking again?”
  The child had decided to roll the knob towards his adoptive father as he spoke, his little face glancing up at the man before him as he babbled happily in his baby gibberish. In return, Din had rolled the nob back to the child, causing another flurry of happy gibberish and giggles to sound throughout the cockpit. The little one had once again picked up the knob, holding it up in delight towards his father.
 “Buir,” the Mandalorian said softly, his gloved hand coming to rub gently along the child's ear. The child beamed up at the older man in response, “Try saying that. Buir.”
  Not a word left the child's lips. His only reply to the man was to stare up at him still, the starlight causing for a twinkle to appear within the dark depths of his round eyes. The child’s hands had dropped the knob, reaching up towards the chin of his helmet, attempting to grab onto his father’s metal cheeks.
  Leaning downward more, Din allowed for the child to grab onto him. The child’s hands instantly tried to pull and squish at his face in excitement, though the beskar would not budge under his tiny grasp. The little one's giggles had increased from the happiness he felt at the attention he was once more receiving from his favourite person in the entire galaxy.
  “Hmm… what about dad?” Din asked, pulling back to once again sit up properly, his hands picking up the child to sit him in his lap. “Can you say dad?”
  Din had spent the majority of hyperspace travel that day attempting to coax his tiny green son into uttering a word. However, all he received was joyful giggles and more chattering gibberish before the child’s attention had once again been overtaken by that of the knob. Leaving the Mandalorian feeling disheartened at once again failing to get the child to speak.
  Thinking back at the failed attempt that day, along with all the others before it, had made the Mandalorian sigh bitterly as he washed his face with a wet cloth. The frown he wore was evident in the mirror as he took a closer look into his reflection. He took note of the wrinkles which had begun to form at the corners of his eyes and his fingers lightly scratched at his stubbly chin.
  His tired eyes had roamed over to where his razor was kept, its blades glistening in the dim light of the refresher. The thought of shaving the thin hair there made its way into the Mandalorian’s mind. He decided against it for now though, as he was tired from the job he did earlier that day. The feeling of fatigue made itself quite apparent, signalling that the Mandalorian desperately needed to get some sleep.
  Setting the cloth aside, he flicked off the light before leaving the refresher with a yawn and stretch of his back. His gaze scanned the area looking for the child, only stopping when his eyes had finally landed on the sight of him playing with his helmet, unaware that his father had returned. Din had left it laying out in the hull after cleaning it with the rest of his armour when he had gone into the refresher to get himself ready for bed.
  The Mandalorian smiled softly at the sight of the child playing, before going to get the cot where the child slept most nights ready for him. It was the only thing left to do for his nighttime routine, as the child had already been changed into his night attire long before Din had even gone to get himself into his own sleepwear.
  Opening the hatch with a lazy press of a button on the side panel, Din was met with the sight of the cot and its tangled sheets within. He first removed the blankets from the previous nights, changing them out with some thicker ones to fend off the colder nights of the new planet they were on. Afterwards, he replaced the pillowcase with a fresh one, fluffing the single pillow before finally setting it at the head of the cot. The last touch was the stuffed frog, something he had gotten for the child from a market not too long ago.
  “Dada!”
  Hearing the child, Din had jumped, the patchy frog in his hand dropping onto the cot below. He stared at the frog for a moment, before snapping his head to the child now next to him. The child’s little green hands had grasped onto the bottom of his left leg, gripping the fabric tightly and pulling on it excitedly. Giggles had followed soon after, light and as bright as any burning sun he had ever seen.
 The child stared up at the man with the purest of expressions, innocent and sweet, his eyes filled with a fondness for his father. The child was seemingly happy to finally discover that Din had returned from the refresher.
“What did you say?” Din croaked out, his voice suddenly sounding very hoarse.
  “Dad!” The child babbled once more, much louder for him to hear. The word itself ringing in the Mandalorian’s ears, leaving a permanent echo within his mind.
  The Mandalorian had stiffened when the realization of the word had, at last, sunk in. His body felt numb and a strange bubbly of emotion had settled in his chest. His lip quivered as if he was scared, though he knew that was far from the case, and he chewed it lightly to cease its movement as his vision had suddenly become clouded.
  The bounty hunter’s hand had come up to his face at this point, his fingers lightly brushing at the salty tears which had now begun to roll down his cheeks in waves upon waves. This discovery was both shocking and confusing to him.
Din Djarin, one of the fiercest warriors in the Galaxy, was crying.
  Many years had passed since Din had last cried, but hearing such a simple thing from the small child had managed to make his eyes water and heart crumble. He was crying tears he didn’t even know he possessed. Tears that Din thought he would never shed again, all thanks to one little word from an even littler child. His child.
  One of the Mandalorian’s hands rubbed at his tear-stained eyes. The child had tilted their head in wonder at him, confused at seeing the rivers which continued to etch across his adoptive father’s cheeks. The child let go of his pants legs, opting to make grabby hands in his direction once more while babbling incoherently.
  “Buir,” Din said before picking up the child to hold him in his arms. “You could also call me that.”
  The child looked up at him with their round eyes, his little green hands placing themselves on his father's chin. A giggle once again left the little one, the sound of it ringing out through the Razor Crest as the child smiled brightly at the bounty hunter holding him. “It means father in Mando’a...”
  Din trailed off as he sniffled quietly to himself. He smiled softly at the child as his vision remained blurry from the tears which continued to overflow from his dark hues. The tears never ceasing their roll down his cheeks and leaving salty trails in their wakes as he did his best to blink away their assault  No matter how hard he tried though, they only seemed to increase the more he thought of what had just occurred.
 “Can you say that?” He asked as the child continued to stare at him. His large, pointed ears having perked at hearing Din speak again. The child’s smile vanished briefly from his cheeks in a small sense of confusion settling in him at seeing that his beloved father still had tears coming from his eyes. “Buir. Try saying Buir.”
 The child had blinked slowly at him, almost as if the little one was attempting to process what exactly the man holding him was asking. His eyes filled with wonder and affection for his Mandalorian father as a toothy grin had spread across his little cheeks once more.
“Brr!”
 The Mandalorian chuckled at the child’s attempt, a feeling of warmth and happiness intensifying in his already overflowing heart. “Close, but we’ll need to work on that.”
  Din cradled the child into his chest, his one hand gently rubbing the child’s back in soothing circles. He held the child like that for a while, rocking him and humming a tune he remembered from his own childhood. The tears running down his cheeks not stopping as his mind replayed the sound of the child’s first word within his now exhausted mind.
  The Mandalorian’s tears did eventually dry, the only evidence of their existence being the trails they left on his cheeks and his red-swollen eyes. The child now slept soundly in his arms, nuzzled into his chest and gripping tightly onto his undershirt. Small puffs of breath had left his tiny form as Din continued to cradle the child close when he began to slowly, and carefully, lay the child down in his cot. He tucked the child in next to his frog, trying to not wake him from his slumber.
  Being a father was something that Din had never expected he would ever become, and for the longest time, he believed he would never get the chance. Looking after the child could definitely be difficult at times and even emotionally draining, but being a parent was something that Din Djarin wouldn’t trade for anything else in the Galaxy.

The Bermuda Triangle: Arrow 1x13 Review (Betrayal)
Time to deal with this love triangle and all the ways it is awful.
Tumblr media
Let’s dig in...
L*uriver vs. Merlance
I frequently say to myself as I rewatch Season 1 that the triangle makes sense in theory. The writers have all the components, albeit clichéd, that should create a love triangle full of juicy drama.
Man wrongs woman in another life thereby destroying any future together
Woman falls for secret identity without realizing it is the same man who hurt her
Man “gives up” woman for her own good
Man and best friend are in love with the same woman
Best friend changes his ways and becomes the perfect boyfriend
Woman no longer wants best friend and instead lusts for secret identity bad boy
And round and round we go. The problem is this doesn’t really tread any new ground. How many times have we seen this type of love triangle play out? MANY TIMES. Not saying a tried and true trope can’t be repeated, but if you’re going to use it then try to inject some new life into it.
Tumblr media
Arrow stays stubbornly in between the lines on this one, which means there are no real surprises. We know exactly where this is headed. Everyone is just waiting for L*urel to choose Oliver. Hell, even Tommy knows it is coming someday.
Tumblr media
This brings us to our second problem. L*urel choosing Oliver is so inevitable it doesn’t require a lot of character growth for either of them. L*urel and Oliver have not dealt with ANY of the issues that caused their demise. Yes, Oliver cheated on L*urel, but there were reasons why he cheated. Those have yet to be discussed.
Tumblr media
We’re supposed to accept that since Oliver is wearing the hood and is out saving the streets as the vigilante then he is “worthy” of L*urel again. We’re supposed to be waiting with baited breath for L*urel to discover Oliver’s secret identity, realize he’s the man in the hood she’s been lusting after, and fall back into his arms where she belongs.
Tumblr media
I think not. Don’t get me wrong. I love me a good triangle. I loved The Vampire Diaries. Two brothers in love with the same woman. Interesting. Woman looks exactly like the lost love that destroyed their bond a hundred years earlier? MORE INTERESTING. And kinky.
Tumblr media
I enjoy exploring the varying ways love is expressed in different relationships and what it can reveal about the characters. There isn’t always a right or wrong choice. There’s just a choice and it reflects the kind of love you need to live.
Tumblr media
But I understand the complaints about love triangles. Oliver, L*urel and Tommy are the PERFECT validation of those complaints. It’s a tired way to insert some drama that has a completely predictable ending. The even bigger problem is there’s barely enough heat to melt an ice cube. L*uriver is frigid. Merlance is better, but they certainly aren’t an inferno.
Tumblr media
“Betrayal” does an excellent job of highlighting all the love triangle problems which plague Season 1. We’re all waiting for L*urel to see that Oliver is a changed man. If only she knew he was The Hood! Her anger and hurt over Sara blinds her ability to see those changes. He needs to wear the mask, so L*urel can see who Oliver truly is. God that sounds good doesn’t it?
Tumblr media
 IT’S NOT GOOD.
Tumblr media
Sara was a symptom of much bigger problems between L*urel and Oliver. He did not want to be with L*urel, so he blew their relationship up in a fairly spectacular display of self sabotage.
Tumblr media
Why doesn’t Oliver want to be with L*urel? Well... welcome to Oliver’s mind. He’s been asking himself that same question for the last five years. If he wanted to be with L*urel then he would have never left town. He would have never cheated on her with Sara. Then Sara would be alive. His father would be alive. EVERY ounce of guilt Oliver Queen carries is connected to that one single choice of leaving L*urel.
Tumblr media
So, it’s fairly easy to understand why Oliver thinks being with L*urel will fix everything. If he can fix things with L*urel then he’s truly forgiven. It washes away the sins of the past. It’s like it never happened. At this point, this is what Oliver wants more than ANYTHING. He can’t bring Sara or Robert back. But he can resuscitate his dead relationship with his ex-girlfriend. Close enough. The man isn’t choosey after five years of misery.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Oliver hasn’t changed at all when it comes to L*urel Lance. Oh I know BUT THE HOOD. Listen y’all, throwing on leather accessories and playing Robin Hood doesn’t equate to relationship therapy. Sorry writers. I need more than crime fighting to believe Oliver can be the perfect boyfriend now.
He continues to make all the same mistakes. OLIVER IS STILL LYING TO L*UREL. He lies to her every day.  He lies when he’s wearing the hood. He lies when he’s not wearing the hood. LIES LIES LIES LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIESS. Oliver continues to hide who he truly is from L*urel. Different outfit. Same problems.
Tumblr media
This brings us to SO. MUCH. MISOGYN. Lance is using the phone The Hood gave L*urel to trap him. Whenever we are looking at betrayal and the Lance family it’s important to grade on a curve. It’s a dirty move on Quentin’s part, but far from the gold medal of betrayals this family achieves.
Tumblr media

Everyone finds out that L*urel is working with the Hood and by everyone I mean Tommy. Quentin follows L*urel with a battalion of police officers to her meeting with The Hood. He’s gathered information on a newly released crime boss, Cyrus Vanch. When Oliver realizes they’ve been busted he holds L*urel by the throat as cover so he can jump off the roof. BuT tHeIr LoVe Is iS hEaLtHy.
Tumblr media
Source: @dinahlaurellancesource
As L*urel rants to her current boyfriend (yes I use the word “current” on purpose), he pieces together that she’s been lying to him about working with The Hood.
Tumblr media
Source: THEARROWGIFS:
L*urel: He's been lying to me for weeks.
Tommy: Yeah feels like crap doesn't it?
Are we surprised L*urel fails to see the hypocrisy in her little rant?
Tumblr media
We are not. This is why Tommy was always the better man for L*urel. He actually had a pair and would call her on her BS. Oliver was incapable of doing until well into Season 2, but I digress.
Tumblr media
So, Tommy goes to his best friend Oliver for relationship advice. I know this is a television show, but why in the ever living mother of Zeus do L*urel and Tommy think OLIVER is the best person to ask for relationship advice?
Tumblr media
Oliver: Tommy, every time you want to talk to me about something, and that something is L*urel, you look like you’re about to tell me you have some terminal disease.
Me: He does have a terminal disease. It’s called L*URIVER.
Tommy: She’s been working with The Hood guy.
Oliver: What? You’re letting her work with that crazy person? She could get hurt Tommy.
Tommy: I’m not letting her do anything. I only just found out about it.
I know this episode aired in 2012, but talk about some patriarchal bullshit. The entire episode is filled with language like this. Quentin, Oliver, Tommy and The Hood all act like L*urel needs their permission to go to the bathroom. New flash fellas: If L*urel wants to engage in nightly rendezvous with a serial killer that’s her business.
Tumblr media
L*urel says something to similar effect, but is summarily blown off by whatever male she’s speaking to. She meets up with The Hood after he and Lance save her from Cyrus Vanch.
Tumblr media
Source: BJ-HUNNICUTTS-BLOG
It seems The Hood didn’t think through all the ways talking to L*urel on a phone and meeting her secretly on rooftops would put her in danger.
Tumblr media
Source: BJ-HUNNICUTTS-BLOG
L*urel: I knew the risks.
The Hood: Now I know them and I’m not willing to take them with you.
L*urel: What does that mean?
It means he wants to bone you, L*urel. Get a clue.
Tumblr media
Holy hell, these conversations make her look stupid. L*urel, do you know a lot of six foot men with similar build and facial hair to Oliver Queen?
Tumblr media
Maybe she would take issue with his infantilizing if she stopped speaking like a three year old whenever The Hood is around.
Tumblr media
Source: LAURELSOURCE
She has this dazed expression too. I know L*urel is so overwhelmed with all the ATTRACTION and LUST that her eyes dilate and the bosom heaves, but I’m starting to think a taser gun is how they forced Katie do scenes with Stephen.
Tumblr media
Source: @dinahlaurellancesource
The point is nobody is all that interested in L*urel’s agency – INCLUDING L*UREL. I understand “secret identity” is a very common trope in hero’s stories, but it never makes any sense to me. Shouldn’t the “true love” be the first person to know who the hero is and not the last? Oliver keeps saying he can’t tell the people he loves who he truly is because it will put them in danger. So, he doesn’t care if Diggle gets killed? His logic makes no sense.  If this was truly about protecting people then why did he need a partner?
Tumblr media
And no – you can’t use John can protect himself. We just watched L*urel throw down with that umbrella. She was lethal.
Tumblr media
Source: @dinahlaurellancesource
Oliver is the king of compartmentalization. He does not know how to merge his two selves yet. He cannot fathom showing Thea, Moira, Tommy and L*urel his darkest self because that means being honest about what happened the five years he was away and what it did to him. That will be a hard pass from our leather clad hero.
Tumblr media
My other issue with the love triangle (in addition to all the lying and misogyny) is Oliver comes off like an asshole. He manipulates Tommy with statements like, "L*urel is lying? That doesn't seem like her” and “ have an honest chat with her” like there is something in their relationship causing her to lie or that Tommy is responsible for L*urel’s behavior. He’s slowly pecking away at the Merlance walls until it crumbles. DIRTY POKER OLIVER QUEEN.
Tumblr media
But then we arrive at this gross fest:
Tommy: There’s some sort of infatuation thing going on here. We both know that she has a pretty strong track record of being attracted to guys who are dangerous, who break the rules. Show me a more dangerous rule breaker than The Hood.
Oliver: I just think you need to have an honest chat with her. Find out the real reason she’s keep secrets.
Tommy: I just can’t believe that L*urel of all people would lie to my face. I guess that’s the way it is with the people you are closest to.
Oliver: I know, but talk to her anyway. And fix this before it becomes something that’s unfixable.
Did this conversation actually happen?
Tumblr media
Does anyone else find it weird that Tommy and Oliver psychoanalyze L*urel’s dating preferences?
Tumblr media
And even weirder they are ACCURATE?
Tumblr media
Credit where credit is due. L*urel likes bad boys right up until they become good boys. Then she’s off to find the next asshole that will lie, cheat and disappoint her. (We could do an entire novel’s worth of L*urel Lance’s toxic dating choices).
Tumblr media
Even worse, Tommy concludes she has the hots for The Hood like it’s nothing. Like it’s completely normal and okay behavior.
Tumblr media
Holy hell man! Tommy, maybe L*urel has beaten any self respect into the ground, but IT’S OK TO EXPECT YOUR GIRLFRIEND TO NOT BE INFATUATED WITH OTHER MEN.
Tumblr media
What’s really gross is Oliver lies straight to Tommy’s face (no differently than L*urel did) while using the secret identity to engage in inappropriate flirting with his best friend’s girlfriend. He uses the hood to say things to L*urel that he would NEVER say as Oliver Queen. And L*urel never tells The Hood she has a boyfriend or to back off. In fact, she encourages the behavior. THIS. IS. CHEATING. Maybe not physical, but it sure is emotional.
Tumblr media
Let’s also never forget L*urel started sleeping with Tommy as a way to stick it to Oliver. She wasn’t expecting to develop real feelings for Tommy, and I do believe she loves him, but that doesn’t erase the toxicity of this cycle that somebody needs to end.
Tumblr media
There’s just no good here, my friends.
Tumblr media
Source: @dinahlaurellancesource
The writers are relying on an empty “they are supposed to be together” promise without providing any evidence why. Neither L*urel nor Oliver has changed in a meaningful way to support giving their relationship another try. The problem between them wasn’t whether or not Oliver fought street crime. The problem was honesty. Between all the lying and just-on-the-line cheating, I’d argue they bring out the worst in each other. Nuclear winter has better chemistry. Need I go on?
Ok. I will.
Tumblr media
The only one who has shown any growth is Tommy. This is change L*urel encouraged in Tommy, but then he became dependable and honest, so she started lusting after The Hood. Both Oliver and L*urel are lying to him about a variety of things. With friends like these who needs enemies?
Tumblr media
L*urel is treated like some prize, but is she a prize they really want to win? Neither man is given a reason to love L*urel beyond she’s who they are supposed to want.
Tumblr media
Source: @dinahlaurellancesource
Don’t get me wrong. I am a Merlance shipper, but it is hard to root for their ship at this point. If the writers just left them alone and let them be adorable then it would be fine.
Tumblr media
Source: @dinahlaurellancesource
BUT. THEY. KEEP. INSERTING. OLIVER.
Tumblr media
And where is L*urel’s character? We’re thirteen episodes in and she’s too busy flip flopping personalities for me to nail her down to one specifically. For arguments sake, let’s say the hot and cold behavior IS one of her main traits. It only surfaces in relation to Oliver. L*urel flips on him which causes her to flop on Tommy. L*urel’s actions are simply a reaction to Oliver.  That’s not agency. That’s a prop.
Tumblr media
Source: @dinahlaurellancesource
It’s almost like the writers can’t be bothered with more. She’s a justice seeking, self sacrificing attorney who works pro bono. TA DA! Character is complete. Nothing more to see here!
Tumblr media
Well, if that’s the criteria then why isn’t Joanna in the running for hero’s true love? Throw Annie Ilonzeh in a room with Stephen Amell. Let’s see if the chemistry is any better.
Tumblr media
The writers haven’t constructed L*urel’s character beyond a hockey puck for Tommy and Oliver to pass to each other until we reach the inevitable conclusion of L*urel “choosing” Oliver. It’s like watching a train speed toward a brick wall. I know the crash is coming, but I’m not apprehensive about it or grotesquely fascinated or even scared. I’m just want out of this Bermuda Triangle.
Tumblr media
Quentin and L*urel
The only real interesting facet of L*urel’s character is her relationship with her father. I love the raw pain between them. It is always just under the surface. The writers throw those problems like grenades in their scenes together. Katie isn’t given much to work with, but her best material is always with Paul Blackthorne.
Tumblr media
Source: LAURELSOURCE
Quentin using his daughter as bait was brilliant, but shadey. Super shadey. It also had the unintended consequence of getting her kidnapped by a mob boss. Oops. I sort of love that Quentin had to eat crow and call The Hood for help once he figured out there was a dirty cop feeding Vance information.
L*urel is in a rage after being held hostage by The Hood. (He can use her as a human shield because he loves her. No problems here. Nope nope nope!) Quentin really hoped L*urel would appreciate his fine detective work, but she’s pretty pissed off about all the guns pointed at her. She feels her father has lost his perspective on this particular case.
L*urel: Are you gonna find another criminal? Someone else to blame for mom leaving, for Sara dying, for your drinking?
The gloves come off! Daaaaaamn. The booze? We’re going there? Meow.
Tumblr media
I agree Quentin Lance has an addictive personality. He directs his rage and grief into an outlet he can control. Hmm… who else does that?
Tumblr media
However, L*urel’s indignation is a little much. She is cavorting with a known criminal. The same criminal her father is investigating. L*urel does nothing to help the investigation and one could argue she impedes the investigation. This is called obstruction of justice, Counselor. L*urel actually commissioned the crime The Hood is perpetrating this week, so she could also be charged as an accessory after the fact. Maybe even aiding and abetting. So, her horror at the police pointing guns at her is somewhat ludicrous. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.
Tumblr media
Source: LAURELSOURCE
L*urel spends much of the episode fighting the rampant patriarchy and misogyny of the men around her by firmly accepting the danger of working with the vigilante.  She is prepared to take those risks.
Tumblr media
Source: LAURELSOURCE
But then L*urel is appalled the second she’s put in any danger and holds all the men responsible for not keeping her safe.
Tumblr media
She can be mad her dad lied to her, but stop clutching the pearls. If L*urel wants to play the vigilante game then she is going to be used as bait and occasionally get kidnapped. That’s what everyone means by danger, girl. You’re either in or you’re out. If you’re in then you don’t get to blame anyone else for danger knocking on your door. Own your choices honey. THY NAME IS AGENCY.
Tumblr media
Oliver and Diggle
This is week 323 of Diggle arguing that Moira is guilty as sin and Oliver ignoring the massive pile of evidence supporting that belief.
Tumblr media
Ok, it hasn’t been that many weeks, but it feels like it. Thou Shall Not Question Diggle. He is always right, but Oliver digs his stubborn heels in. So, John offers to drive Moira around for a week and bugs her. As one does.
Oliver: You bugged my mother?
This is how OTA shows their love, Oliver.  Diggle knows Moira is a slippery snake and can wiggle out of any question Oliver asks her. She even burns the copy of the List Felicity gave him after Oliver confronts her with it.
Tumblr media
Moira insists she never associated with the people in Robert’s book and knew it only as a list of people who owed him favors. Oliver believes his mother is trying to protect her children from Walter’s fate.
Tumblr media
So, John gets Moira ON TAPE discussing The Undertaking with Malcolm Merlyn and the sabotage of Robert Queen’s boat.
Tumblr media
We’re going to ignore that Moira’s voice is perfectly identifiable, but Merlyn’s is about ten octaves lower. The point is these are information diamonds Diggle unearths and Oliver FINALLY agrees to pay his mother a visit as The Hood.
Tumblr media
Flashbacks
The best part of the flashbacks is meeting all the people who helped Oliver Queen become The Hood.
Tumblr media

Hello Slade Wilson! He’s a massively important character in Arrow and it is fun to rewatch how he came into Oliver’s life.
Slade and his partner, the man who tortured Oliver, are Australian Intelligence who came to Lian Yu to free Yao Fei. Slade and Yao Fei have been monitoring an air field so they can escape the island, but he cannot take it alone. There is always a reason behind all of Yao Fei’s actions, but it takes Slade a minute to figure out why he sent Oliver.
Slade: You have no skill. No strength. No training. To say you fight like a girl would be a compliment.
I’m equally indignant and amused by that line. Slade doesn’t believe Oliver will be any help to him because well… he met him. If Oliver is ever captured again he could reveal Slade’s location.  So, he decides to behead Oliver. It’s the nice thing to do. It won’t hurt a bit. What can I say guys? It’s Lian Yu! These are how the memories are made.
Tumblr media
Oliver dislocates his shoulder and punches Slade in a vain attempt to defend himself. Yao Fei may be a softer judge of character, but he’s not wrong about Oliver’s survival instinct. Slade sees the fight in Oliver’s eyes and finally understands why Yao Fei sent him. They need Oliver to survive as much as he needs them. He might not be much to look at now, but Slade Wilson is just the man to harness Oliver’s will and turn him into the fighter they all need him to become.
Stray Thoughts
David Anders is like my personal Kevin Bacon. He's in everything I watch. #Arrow #TVD #Alias #OUAT

I was never all that jazzed when L*urel was the damsel in distress and I love that crap. Another clue I didn't ship it. Source:  LAURELSOURCE
Do people on this show not realize you can’t touch evidence? JFC.
Twenty four arrows in the quiver. Good to know.
“It doesn’t mean I have to read the bastard his rights though.” IF YOU WANT THE CHARGES TO STICK YOU DO.
I am so confused on what type of law L*urel practices. Her firm works for a victim’s advocacy group, but she also prosecutes criminal cases. This feels like a radiologist performing heart surgery.
KC is just really bad at action scenes. It's always so awkward.
Musings of the Kiddo
Kiddo: Does he ever run out of arrows?
Me: He has extra in the car.

"Anyways, he invited the whole core pack to a BBQ. It's nice meeting with Luka. I learn so much about general history and other things. That's alright with you?" Liam switched his cellphone from the right hand to his left so he could reach for a shampoo bottle with his right. He was currently doing some shopping before his shift at Ellie’s started and also used the time to have a phone conversation with Byron. Byron chuckled softly. "Why shouldn't it be?" "Dunno. Maybe because you think I'm replacing you? Rather listen to him than you?" Byron sighed softly. "Liam, I am well aware of my own age. It is very noble of you to care about my feelings in that matter but I have to tell you not to worry. I know you listen to me but having another werewolf, an Alpha even, closer to your own age group, gives you undoubtedly the advantaged to see things from a different perspective. You young people see the world differently than we do, that is perfectly fine. You can never know too much and different viewpoints allow you a better understanding of things. I am not worried you will forgo my advice or replace me with Luka. In fact, I am excited you get to make this experience with other Alphas and leaders of supernatural groups." Liam exhaled and smiled. "Good. I am grateful for all of you taking your time to teach me things, explain things to me. Especially at the moment, I feel I'm learning so many new things about our world. Things I never ever thought of before." "Your willingness to learn is one of your most admirable traits. When we met, it was one of the first things I noticed", Byron praised him. Liam meanwhile opened the shampoo bottle and sniffed. He grimaced. Way too chemical for his liking. He hastily closed the bottle and put it back on the shelf. "I try my best. The way I see it, knowledge makes me a better Alpha. Which, funnily enough, is an insight I share with Scott." "You're right. Knowledge is always good." Liam found another shampoo he liked and took it to the cash register. Byron meanwhile reminisced. "I think I met Luka's parents once. Unless there is another pack with the same name in North America, which I highly doubt. Insightful and willing to listen. Remarkable people. It appears, their son takes after them." "Wow, maybe one day you two can meet and you can tell him that. I'm not sure when his parents died exactly but he still grieves them and hearing about them will surely make him happy. Maybe you can also meet Savannah and Maddie." He considered this a good idea. Byron hummed approvingly. "I'd love to."
"One second, Byron." Liam found it incredibly impolite to check out and be on the phone so he paused the call and turned his full attention to the cashier once it was his turn to pay. The transaction didn't take long and Liam left the store with his shampoo. Only then he picked up the conversation again. "Sorry, had to pay." Byron hummed again and Liam remembered a question from earlier he had wanted to ask: "You said it's highly unlikely two packs with the same name existing in North America. Why?" "I guess I should have worded it better. There is a chance of another pack having an Alpha named Barrett, it is not an incredibly rare name, but the possibility of the other pack referring to themselves as Barrett Pack is rare. You know, Liam, packs can have all kinds of names. A lot of them take their Alpha's last name. McCall, Hale, Barrett. Others, like ours, derive their names from the world around them or things connected to them. Red Ambers Pack, The Creek Pack, Silver Eyes. What all those names have in common is they are exclusive to those packs, simply because no one wants to be dragged into another pack's business because they share the last name. Imagine another pack, full of brutal and disruptive wolves, being called Dunbar Pack. One day someone shows up at your door and causes trouble. You would be furious. It's common werewolf etiquette to not have an already taken name. Also an etiquette stemming from old times." "Why do I now imagine all Alphas visiting an office where they register their names and pay the registration fee?" Liam snickered. Byron laughed wholeheartedly. "It's a nice image. Most come from hearsay, to be honest. And, in case of a pack having their Alpha's last name as pack name, the name changes with the Alphas. Unless it's another family member taking over, but that goes without saying." Liam pondered. "So our pack would have gone from Fairclay Pack to Dunbar Pack, if it weren't for Morning Dew." Liam opened his car and put the shampoo bottle on the passenger seat before he closed the door and locked his car again. Now he made his way toward's Ellie's store. "Exactly", Byron confirmed. "I like it better that way. Think of the poor registration office. All this paperwork for a name change." Byron laughed again and Liam joined him. "My shift's about to start, Byron. Talk to you later." "Take care, Liam."
He ended the call and pocketed his phone. The store was very central, with many shops around, and Liam used it to run some smaller errands quite often. When he now arrived at his workplace, Ellie was on a ladder. “Didn’t I tell you to wait with restocking until I’m here?” Liam asked lightly and sidestepped a few empty boxes. His boss placed a box on the shelf. “You mean because you’ll heal faster if you fall from the ladder?” “I…yeah. Besides I’m your young employee. Use me.” “I want to take up that task in case you have no use for Liam!” Carlie yelled from somewhere between the shelves. Her friends giggled. “Carlie.” Liam smirked. “What about Theo? He would get jealous of me for having you.” Theo had visited Liam in the shop before and as expected Ellie and her friends had fawned over his charming personality. “I take both of you!” They all laughed and Ellie thankfully climbed down from the ladder to let Liam take over.
He was working away for a while when the door opened and Theo entered the shop. He didn’t even need to open his mouth, the feeling of resignation and frustration pouring through their bond was enough. Liam gave him a pitiful glance. “The job interview didn’t work out.” Theo completely skipped over Liam already knowing his emotional state and just continued. “They wanted a twenty-year-old with thirty years experience and I can’t offer that. Tried telling her I’ve been to hell. She thought that was a joke.” "I'm sorry." Liam meant it and went to console his boyfriend. He hugged him tightly and Theo clung to him. He wanted to work again and Liam always felt a pang of guilt. Theo had hated working at the diner but he had been working and because his Alpha pressed, he was now jobless. "It's just...It's starting to get borderline ridiculous! Seattle is not a small town, how can nobody be in need of a healthy college student willing to get his hands dirty? Bullshit!" Theo ranted and Liam let him. It was only logical Theo needed to air out his frustration.
"Don't mind me barging into your conversation", Ellie appeared next to the couple. "But, Theo, if you really want a job, I can offer you one. Liam said you two wanted to work together after college anyway. Why not start now?" "That would be possible?" Liam asked surprised. She shrugged. "I see why not. There is more than enough work for the two of you. Also, two strong young men are always better than one. Carlie, don't even comment on that one!" "I didn't say anything!" Carlie shrieked and Theo laughed. "It sure sounds like fun." He looked at Liam. "Is this okay for you?" "Yeah, I don't mind." Liam really saw no issue with that. Ellie was right, they wanted to work together someday, might as well as start now. "Then, yeah, I'd love to accept, Ellie. Thank you." Theo was extremely grateful. She was happy. "Amazing. We can later talk about all the details. I'll offer you the same contract as Liam." He understood that. "Any rules for working together as a couple?" "Boy, you visited Liam several times since he started working here. I never had to fish you out of the storage room or the back office. I'll take the chance." "We are professional!" Liam squawked. Ellie shot him a grin. Then she pumped her fist. "Not me being selfish but there will be some deliveries arriving soon. You two strong men can take this, right?" "Absolutely", Liam promised and pulled Theo along to show him everything.
****** Working with Theo was easier than Liam imagined it to be. Sure, he would have never made the suggestion for their own coffee shop had he doubted that but it was even easier than in his imagination. They worked well together and knew how the other would react in certain situations. They also fell in an easy working rhythm without speaking so much. "Is it really okay for you? Me working here?" Theo still asked when they were storing the deliveries later on. "Yeah, sure. I don't mind in the slightest." Liam opened a box and began handing Theo things. The Second Alpha sorted them meticulously. "Just wanted to check, so you don't feel like I'm intruding or whatever." "You're not. We want to have our own store one day. This is a great exercise." Liam gave him a big smile which Theo returned. "Besides, Ellie is a great boss, you'll see. Makes life easier." "Easier?" Theo inquired and grabbed another box from Liam to store it away. Liam grunted. "She knows about us being werewolves. We don't have to find silly excuses if anything comes up. I had to lie so often in Beacon Hills and come up with stories to cover. Now my boss knows what I am, my coach knows, even my most important family members know.  I don't have to lie anymore and that makes things so much easier. My friends all are either supernatural themselves or involved with the supernatural one way or another. I can be honest, and just be me, you know? It feels so much better", Liam confessed. "It truly is easier", Theo admitted. "Ellie is my first boss in known about the supernatural, it's quite a luxury for me." He gave Liam a cheeky grin and Liam laughed. "You don't mind working with me, right?" He then inquired. "If I did, I wouldn't have accepted the job offer. I'm desperate for a job, but not that desperate." Theo sorted the last thing and handed Liam the label maker. "I'm sure there was a compliment somewhere in that sentence", the young Alpha nagged but didn't mean any harm. Theo understood and scoffed playfully. But then he grew serious. "It's actually quite soothing for my wolf. Being around you, knowing where you are." "Knowing where I am? You know where I am, even if you're not here with me." "It's not that. I know where you are, yes. But are you safe? That's how the mating bond manifests for me. By the urge to protect you every time and at all cost." Liam loved Theo with all his heart and he loved the protective streak the older one had developed for him. Yet... "I like that and I appreciate that. However, I am perfectly capable of protecting myself." "I know you are", Theo confessed, "And that scares the crap out of me." "Huh?" Liam frowned in confusion. Theo grumbled. "One day, I fear, I will be too slow. And you jump headfirst into danger, probably sacrificing yourself for us, and I won't be able to protect you and keep you from doing it. One day, even though you're perfectly capable, I'm afraid a bad guy will get lucky and you will die." Theo shuddered and Liam smiled softly. He put his things down and moved closer to his boyfriend. "I protect myself as good as you do. I will never leave you like this, okay?" "Hm. Promise?" "Promise." Liam kissed him. Maybe it was a dangerous promise given their life but at this moment it felt needed. The sheer thought of one of them not returning after a fight was terrifying and cruel. So acting as if they had complete control over their fate was the only thing to stop the thoughts from going down this path. Theo responded to the kiss but then poked Liam's side. "Come on, let's get those things to Ellie. She didn't hire us to make out. That would be a different line of work."
Liam snickered but then grabbed a box and followed his boyfriend back into the store. "Before I forgot, Sadie and Mason plan on taking you shopping to your new friend Savannah's boutique. Told me before I left." "Me??" Liam shrieked and Ellie looked at him in shock. "Yep. Sadie stalked Savannah online and wants to see the stores. Mason's all for that idea but both agreed it would be rude to show up there without you. So, you have to be the sacrificial lamb, puppy." "No", Liam said firmly, "I'm not going shopping. You all dressing me up once was bad enough. No way!" "Tell them that. I'm just warning you."
The young Alpha grumbled and Ellie chuckled. Liam decided to change the topic slightly. "Luka said he would also invite Savannah and Maddie to the BBQ. I'm really excited to have you all meet. They're cool. It's nice hanging out with them." "Or texting with them", Theo teased. It was true, especially Savannah sent a lot of texts but she never expected a decent answer and just spammed with various things. Maddie, her sister in spirit as the two called themselves, responded equally excited and Liam's phone was buzzing significantly more since he met them. "Are you jealous?" "Me? Of what or whom?" Theo asked surprised. Liam shrugged. It had crossed his mind, he still remembered Theo's jealousy regarding Scott once. "Of Luka maybe?" "Why? Because you had a lunch date?" Theo joked and began tidying up behind the cash register. "It wasn't a lunch date. Not even a date. Just two friends getting something to eat. I do the same with Mason." The Second Alpha shook his head. "I'm not jealous. You're friends, you clearly respect each other and I see how happy it makes you. You see it as a chance to exchange views and advice. How could I be jealous of that?" He paused. "I mean, he is handsome and I know you noticed this as well. You have a type, puppy. Charming men with dark hair. Only natural you find him attractive." "I don't have a type." Liam had begun to fill the displays around the cash register and now shook his head. Theo raised his fingers while he enumerated. "Brett. Me. Luka. Even some of your exes. All fit the bill." "No." Liam scrunched his nose. Though he was not so sure about that one. "Hayden, for example, didn't fit the description." "Yeah. This particular type you have is reserved for males only. I met all your ex-girlfriends and when it comes to women you go for different types. But almost all your ex-boyfriends or crushes share the same traits." Flawless logic but Liam would rather swallow his tongue than directly admit that. "Okay, so what? He is attractive. Doesn't mean I want to start something." "Never said you do."
"Can the old coot give you advice?" Ellie injected. Both men looked at her. She shook her head. "Don't do that to each other. Don't tell yourself you're not allowed to find someone attractive just because your partner might get jealous." "I'm not jealous", Theo clarified. "I know you're not. It's just general life advice from an old lady." "You're not that old", Liam mumbled but continued to listen to her. "I saw relationships end over this. Because one partner thought they were not allowed to find anybody else than their partner sexy or handsome. It's ridiculous. Finding a person attractive says nothing about feelings or ambitions. Just like you said, Theo, it's a preference, a type. But this irrational of making the significant other jealous can become such a pressure, it ends in a breakup. And yet somehow society began telling people, young people, this is how it should be. It shouldn't. It's toxic. My advice is to see it as easy as you two do. A little bit of jealousy is good and I know there is a thing called emotional cheating, that is wrong, but not taking things too seriously is the best way to handle it. I am in a happy marriage and we both find other people handsome. Doesn't mean anything." Liam and Theo looked at each other. "I think we got that one covered", Theo muttered and Liam nodded with a smile. "Yeah."
****** "I hate you and regret all my life choices up to this point." Maya had her arms crossed in front of her chest and glared at the building ahead of her. "Why am I here?" Liam put his arm around her shoulders. "You know you love me and your life choices were good. But if I get dragged down by them, I need to drag someone with me", he explained sardonically and pointed at Sadie, Mason, Brett, and Corey currently gushing over the shop window of Savannah's boutique. Mason had managed to convince Corey and Brett to accompany them and they had excitedly agreed. Liam had decided for that alone they all would get one Christmas present less. Or a lump of coal. "Liam, look, they have suits." Mason was already at the entrance. Coal was a good idea. "And bowties!" Or nothing at all.
The boutique was perfectly illuminated and the carpet was held in pastel colors. One ground floor and a first floor, connected through circular stairs. Several clothing racks and shelves with all kinds of garments were placed around. Liam didn't know where to look first. "Welcome, welcome." Savannah walked towards them looking stunning as always in black heels, white ripped jeans and a black spaghetti top. She smiled brightly at Liam before she hugged him. Then she introduced herself to the others. "I am Savannah. Feel free to look around and see what you might like. If you need help, don't hesitate to ask. And shut up, those earrings are adorable." Just like that, Sadie had a new best friend. Both women excitedly greeted each other and soon enough their friends all swarmed the place. Maya stayed next to Liam. "You look out of place. Are you alright?" Savannah asked. "I don't like shopping", Maya admitted. "I just can't spend hours browsing a clothing store. It's just not me." "That's a shame. I think everybody should enjoy buying things for themselves. We try to give customers that here in our store. But maybe we can help you. Pilar!"
A dark-haired woman in Savannah's age showed up at the top of the staircase. "Yeah?" She called out while she walked down the stairs. She wore sneakers, grey shorts, and a colorful top. "Guys, this is Pilar, she works here with me and is also one of my Betas. Pilar, those are Liam and Maya. Maya hates shopping. Think you could help?" Savannah moderated the getting to know each other. To Maya, she further explained: "Pilar is great with clothing and has this unique talent of always finding something a person likes. I swear, she will make this a fun experience." "Oh, great." Maya still didn't seem convinced but she gave Pilar a brave smile when the were cheetah grinned proudly. Then she swiftly pulled her long, wavy hair up in a bun and studied Maya. "Tell me about yourself. Are you more tomboy or more sporty? Dresses yes or no?" "I'm not a tomboy. I'm simply not interested in too much makeup or dresses. Don't know if that makes me a tomboy already?" Pilar hummed. "What are your hobbies? What do you care for?" "Painting, I care about the environment, protests," Maya started to list. "Environment, amazing. We have a collection of local-made eco-friendly clothes here.  I make all of them, so I know what materials were used and how. Maybe we can find something there?" Maya looked suddenly incredibly happy and followed Pilar up the stairs again.
Savannah grabbed a polka-dotted bowtie in blue and white and held it up to Liam. "You would look pretty in a bowtie." "Absolutely not!" Liam shook his head. She laughed. "Relax, I'm just messing with you. You're not my dress-up doll." He chuckled. Her humor was something you had to like, otherwise you might feel insulted or ridiculed. But Liam got it. "You're coming to the BBQ?" "Later, I think. It's a busy day here and I cannot plan in advance when we will be done. Stocktaking, you know? I'll keep you guys updated." She smirked. "I wonder what his house looks like. Is it big? Small? Maybe even bigger once inside." "Are we still talking about Luka's house?" Liam questioned. Savannah clicked her tongue. "Maybe. Maybe not." Her eyes flashed light blue. Liam narrowed his own eyes in concentration. "Are your eyes always this color? Or did they change after you did become an Alpha?" "Blue, you mean? It's the default eye color for cheetahs. Our Alphas don't have different colored eyes than the rest. Blue for everyone." "Wolves only have blue eyes once they took an innocent life. Hence why I'm asking." The blonde shook her head. "We don't have that." Savannah wrapped one arm around Liam. "Now, tell me, any life updates? Things I should know about? Should I take time off work for a wedding?" "My wedding is in a few years, don't stress." Liam blushed. She cackled and let go of him when three women passed the store window. They waved and Savannah waved back. "The brunette one is Beatriz, the redhead is Paola, and the one with the black hair is Carmen. They make the rest of my pack." "Your pack is solely women?" Liam was surprised. "I mean if you don't count our parents, yeah. It's not uncommon for were cheetahs. We are matriarchic minted packs most of the time. It has its origin in the myth of the first were cheetahs. We originated in Africa and there was a village. The old king had been okay-ish to the women in the village. Not the most supportive fella but not bad either. But he got dethroned and killed. The new king made women fair game. They had to serve the men, were mistreated, abused, raped, were no more than slaves. One night the women fled into the wilderness. But without any food or weapons, they were scared and so they prayed to the highest gods for help. One heard their prayers and decided to help them in exchange for something. The women would get the powers to overtake their oppressors and in return, they would forever serve the cheetah goddess. Thus were cheetahs were born." Liam marveled. "I have no idea how werewolves were created. It is so cool you guys know your origin story." "Well." She looked rather proud of herself. "It's tradition and we're proud of it. No, we don't hate men. That's not what this is about." "Who hates men?" Mason appeared next to them. "Nobody." Liam ducked last minute before his best friend managed to place a pink tie around his neck. He just didn't count on Corey appearing behind him and placing a small tiara on Liam's head. "We crown you Alpha of our hearts!" Liam wanted to be mad. But it was hard when he was already laughing. "You're ridiculous!"
****** "Do we have everything we need? Are you sure it's fine? Maybe we should have picked up wine? I don't know." Corey stood in the kitchen and nibbled at his thumbnail. He had begun that after running his hands through his hair and destroying his hairstyle three times in a row which almost caused a nervous breakdown on Mason's part. Liam reached out and gently tugged his friend's hand away from his mouth. "Wow, you are nervous. Relax, it's only Maddie and Asher." Corey groaned. "I know. But I feel this is the first time Mase and I represent this pack as emissary and consultant. Yes, you are here but nobody else is, and what if something goes wrong?" "Corey, you advised me in the past", Liam reminded him. "I know but that was in group settings. This time, it's just us." He pointed at himself and Mason who also seemed incredibly nervous. Liam almost pitied them. "Look, I felt the same way before the Alpha meeting. But it turned out fine. Maddie's a great character and I'm sure Asher is as well. I mean, otherwise, they surely wouldn't be friends." He exhaled. "I also don't think you two are even capable of starting a war or offend somebody. I know you. Mason, you're great at diplomatic stuff, and you, Corey, are great with keeping the peace. I trust you." Sometimes as an Alpha, you had to give a pep talk. Liam could relate to the anxious feeling and the fear of destroying everything but he absolutely believed in his consultant and his emissary. He would have never given them those positions otherwise.
The doorbell rang. "Okay, relax!" Liam felt like a father protecting his kids from trouble in school as he now made his way towards the front door and Mason and Corey followed closely.
And then he opened the door. "Liam! I brought the playdate for your boys" Maddie announced cheerfully and with the biggest grin on her face. She stood at the front door alone, Asher still at the car which he currently locked. Other than last time Liam saw him he was now wearing jeans, sneakers, and a grey henley. It fit him better than the suit. More like him. And it seemed like his best friend had not bothered to wait for him. It also seemed as if he was used to this given he didn't even comment on it when he now joined them at the door. "I'm thirty-one. I don't need a playdate!" He now corrected her playfully exasperated. He smiled at Liam. "Hi, I'm Asher, please ignore her." Maddie opened her mouth in mock outrage and Liam laughed. "Hi, I'm Liam, welcome. Those are Corey and Mason." He stepped aside and pointed at his friends respectively. Both raised their hands. "Hey." "Hi." Maddie had overcome her faked shock from before and stepped into the house. She continued the conversation with her best friend as nothing happened. "No, what you need is some happiness fucked back into your soul." "Oh my god!" Asher glanced at the ceiling as if he asked higher powers for help. Then he gave Liam, Mason, and Corey an exasperated glance. "Please, double-ignore her." "You can't ignore me! You love me!" She reminded him gleefully. He sighed. "I wonder why." But the banter between the friends managed to break the ice, Mason and Corey warmed up immediately, and smiles spread over their faces. "You just stepped into the house, so you don't need an extra invitation", Mason mused. Maddie nodded. "No, I don't need this. We can enter any house unless a or mountain ash barrier prevents us. Speaking off, you have one outside, right? I felt it." "A ghostly barrier created by our witch, yep", Corey confirmed. "You were only able to pass because Liam invited you. Other supernaturals without invitation would have not been able to get over it. But it's amazing you could feel that." "Sometimes we can feel those things. Not always", Maddie explained.
Mason was already on the case and lead them to the dining room where they had put the bestiary and Corey's computer. "He needs to write this down." Liam knew his friend. Maddie pointed at Asher. "I have one of those as well." Asher was more interested in what Corey and Mason had gathered. "Is that a bestiary? I've heard about those but never saw one before. Wow. How did you get that?" "From friends. Yeah, I think that's a good explanation." Corey kept it simple. It didn't need more explanation for the moment, the three of them started talking animatedly. Meadow and Liam retreated into the kitchen.
"I know it's weird. A human and a vampire being best friends. But he makes me feel normal." She smiled weakly. "I don't think it's weird." Liam shook his head. "Mason and I were friends before I became a werewolf but after I finally came clean to him, it was good to have him. To know not everything is supernatural. Sometimes I need this. Normality. I understand what you're saying." Maddie seemed happy he understood and looked at the three men. They were still deeply involved in their exchange, didn't even notice their friends being gone. "I think this was a good decision", she said quietly. "Yeah? That's good." Liam was also pleased it worked so well. She sighed. "He doesn't have many friends. Acquaintances, yes. But not those I-can-call-you-at-three-in-the-morning-because-my-whole-life-is-exploding-right-now type of friends. It's good he's meeting new people." "I thought Asher was part of your coven." Had Liam been wrong? "No, he can't be", Meadow declined, "See, vampires are independent beings. We can form covens but even then we tend to ourselves. I told you I can walk around during the day but at night, vampires are more active. You won't find a vampire sleeping during the night unless they're forced to. Our rhythm is completely different than a human's. It's not like your pack, you are humans as well. We have a human side and yet we're detached from the human living. Having a human in a vampire coven wouldn't work." It made perfect sense Liam just had not considered it before. Logical. "So best friends but not part of each other's groups. Huh, okay." "Yep." She popped the 'p'.
"How did you two meet?" Corey asked meanwhile. Asher put one arm over the headrest of his chair and looked at Meadow. He started laughing. She grinned. "Oh, I can tell you. A few years ago this vampire came to town. She had been going on my nerves for a while and causes some havoc. One night, she was on the hunt for new prey and picked Mr. Asher himself. Look at the guy, who can blame her?" Asher groaned and rolled his eyes but continued to look highly amused by how she was telling the story. "Anyways, she lures him away and I follow. She's doing the most, all seductive and sexy, and then I barge in, ready to save the innocent human. The vampire chick and I start yelling at each other, she cries about how she almost had him and what does he say? Sitting on the couch, frowning as if she insulted him, and then he hits her with: I'm gay!? Like, how could you not pick that up? Completely unfazed by the reveal about vampires." "To be fair, I knew about supernaturals through my father. It wasn't a groundbreaking discovery", Asher relented. Maddie ignored him this time. "From that moment on I knew he is game for everything. We started talking, I learned whose son he was, the rest is history." "Meaning since this moment she's pestering me and acting like my undead auntie", Asher teased her. "Well, someone has to take care you're not going to the dogs. Also, undead auntie? If anything I'm the cool auntie!" She acted arrogantly and watched her nails. "Don't be fooled, she's the one getting her heel stuck in the streets and lands on her behind while trying to get it unstuck." Asher let Liam, Mason, and Corey in on a secret. Meadow shrieked and walked over to his hit shoulder. "This was one time and absolutely not my fault." Every word was followed by a hit. He laughed and tried to stop her from hitting him. "You were drunk and the shoes too big. Which I told you in the store." "Yeah, the only fashion tip of yours actually useable." Asher groaned. "Oh god, no, not this again." Mason used this to take notes. "So calling out god in the presence of a vampire is okay. Nothing happens." "I'm not Satan. We can walk into churches without bursting in flames or getting hit by lightning too." "Demons burst in flames upon entering a church. Hence why my father never visits one", Asher put in his own two cents. Corey eyed him. "Morbid sense of humor or truth?" "Dark humor. His father is the human equivalent of a demon if you must know. Though I personally prefer to call him a walking trash pile of a human being. You never know when a demon is around and overhears. Wouldn't want to insult them", Meadow nagged and Asher shushed her. "Maddie!" "What? Your father is garbage. Not just because of his businesses but just alone based on how he treats you." "It could be worse." This didn't seem to be the first time the friends got into a spat over Asher's father. "At least, he didn't let me be homeless." "He lets you live in a tiny shoebox of an apartment and makes you pay horrendous prices for rent. The bar is so damn low and yet this rat walks beneath it with his head held high." Liam didn't want them to fight and cut in. "The joy of terrible fathers. My biological one is also one of those. But it's good to have people in your life who care about you." "You cherish them more. That's how I see it", Asher agreed. Meadow understood the peace offering as what it was and kissed his cheek. "Such a cutie." "Hate you." "Asher, you're embarrassing me in front of our new friends." "They know you for a few days now. That train has left the station. They already know how nuts you are." Mason cackled. These two gave him and Liam a run for their money. They also could banter and bicker but when push came to shove, they were there for each other and had each other's backs.
Asher returned his attention to the bestiary and pointed at an entry. "That information is false. It says nymphs are redhaired. Nymphs can have every hair color in the world, not just red. If you can, I would note that somewhere." "You can read Latin just like that?" Corey was baffled. Asher shrugged. "Sure. Learned it in school and never stopped using the skills. Especially after I met Maddie and started helping her with a few vampire-related things. Comes in handy." "Asher is good with languages. It helps him in his job as well." "What are you doing for a living?" "I'm an event planner. My client list is small but exclusive. It's not the most charitable job in the world but you have to get out of bed." And just like that, Liam decided he liked Asher immensely. He had this wicked humor you only got after years of being through an absolute shit show and from what he already heard about his father and what he saw at the meeting, Liam could see where this came from. Meadow had said Asher's mother died when he was a child, another traumatic experience. Yet here he was, talking openly with strangers and sharing things with them. Away from his father, Asher seemed more relaxed and himself. And it was obvious he cared deeply for Maddie. Liam liked people with their hearts in the right place. Those were his type of people.

I am happy I got to insert Asher more. I love this guy. I love all my characters but after I barely had a chance to write about him in the last chapter, this chapter felt good. Next chapter they all finally come together. Or do they? We will see 😁 Did you like the chapter so far? I hope I managed to bring out the friendship Maddie and Asher have. They're each other's persons.

kakeru’s presentation of childhood trauma: the other side of the coin
part of the intrigue of kakeru’s character is its blatant opposition to yuki’s. he shows a self-confidence that yuki lacks. he’s unaware of how his actions affect other people while yuki is hyper-aware. he comes off as emotionally open to the point of abrasion where yuki is intensely guarded and careful. he at first seems to be everything yuki isn’t. and, being that we know of yuki’s struggles, and are intimately aware of why he struggles, our first impression of kakeru may be that he doesn’t struggle at all. it’s what yuki believes at first, after all, and this impression tinges our viewpoint.
however, as the story evolves and kakeru becomes more of a presence, we start to see that he does struggle, and carries his issues from his upbringing in his own ways -- it’s just that his presentation is different from yuki’s (and machi’s, for that matter), and his presentation isn’t one that’s as easy to sympathize with.
he doesn’t suffer from self-loathing. he doesn’t internalize his traumas in a way that make him believe he’s broken or unlovable. instead, his issues lie within how he views other people -- his issues manifest as external and other’s-oriented. he assumes that he knows why people act the way they do, which bars him from learning how to read and sympathize with them.
and it’s because of this, maybe, that we become dismissive of how, or if, he’s affected by his own childhood.
we don’t see very much of kakeru’s childhood, but we see and hear of it in about the same amount as machi’s. i think it’s important that this is the case, and important to see where they present similarly and differently.
though they were raised by different mothers (possibly in different households as well; the amount of interaction kakeru had with their father isn’t known), they were raised under the same strict guidelines and the same competitive atmosphere that, ultimately, left them both without figures of emotional nurture in their formative years. kakeru mentions that his mom only “came to her senses” after he “went on a rampage” about his involvement in the inheritance issue -- as he started to be less emotionally repressed after this confrontation, we can take this to mean that this is when he finally started receiving the emotional nurture from his mom that hadn’t been present to him previously (we see later that he and his mother are much closer, even if they show it in aggressively teasing ways).
as machi never received that nurture from her parents, and was further abandoned by them, her and kakeru’s similar path of trauma split. however, her presentation of her issues -- cold, quiet, having sudden moments of aggression that peak to some form of destruction -- are traits she shares with kakeru. these traits were more blatantly shared until their early teens:
Tumblr media
and these traits continue to show in kakeru even after he develops into a louder and bolder presence -- these moments are farther and fewer between, interspersed between him being more fun and free-spirited, but they still color how he handles conflict and difficult/negative thoughts:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think, ultimately, that it’s a disservice to his character to treat his change in attitude after dropping the inheritance issue as a sudden and easy flip of a switch. he didn’t suddenly lose all that time of being cold, angry, and emotionally repressed -- these traits are still very much a part of him, even if it’s no longer a consistent or persistent persona he portrays.
but, as to why exactly he presents his trauma in a way that machi does not -- that is, why he struggles to see outside of his own perspective, and why he’s cruel to other people rather than himself: his means of self-preservation is to think highly of himself. as a child, it was all he was allowed to do in order to keep ahead of the game he was forced to play.
kakeru is more independent-thinking than machi, and this is where they differ in the manifestation of their trauma, shared as it may be. machi places a lot of blame on herself and constantly sees her own shortcomings in the face of her mother; her trauma manifests as internal (though it should be noted that her displays of aggression are by and large viewed as being intrusive to her peers; kakeru’s aggression is seen similarly, except he’s more intentional about it. he’s aggressive to them on purpose. machi isn’t.)
Tumblr media
kakeru and machi both had certain “shortcomings” to battle against in their competition for their father’s inheritance: though machi was the legitimate child, she was younger than kakeru and a girl. though kakeru was the firstborn and a boy, he was illegitimate. machi’s means of dealing with those shortcomings follows the general socialization of young girls -- to be seen as mature, and to be seen as well-behaved and “good,” there’s a general rule of repression to be followed. she did everything her mother told her to do, and kept her opinions and wants to herself. she never acted out, and dealt with her stress in a way that, at worst, was something ultimately harmless: making footprints in the snow because its perfection stressed her out.
kakeru’s means of dealing with these shortcomings more typically follows the socialization of young boys, in that there was an allowance of higher self-focus. while he did was his parents told him and became repressed emotionally, him being able to not only question his place within the competition (“i’m being used as a pawn in someone else’s stupid game”) and then combat against it displays a self-assurance and self-confidence that machi does not possess (important to note, too, is that his illegitimacy actually gave him an out in this situation; while he could be removed from his father and the succession issue rather easily, this wasn’t possible for machi).
while he was successfully removed from the situation, there remained a downside: although now able to grow into a much more open and unabashed personality, he still missed out on the typical milestones of healthy emotional growth as a child and preteen. he was forced to focus on himself and his own successes as a child, and as such, didn’t develop a means to understand or connect with his peers (from what komaki says of him, it seems unlikely that he had friends during his childhood).
and this is where komaki comes in. kakeru, once he’s out of his shell, immediately begins to date komaki. we don’t know why he takes to her, but speculating, it’s possible that he knew of her crush on him, and saw the value of her being kind to him/liking him even when he was a difficult person. it’s likely, too, that his and his mom’s relationship was only in the very beginning stages of being repaired, so to have someone who liked him for him, despite everything, i think was very novel to him. he understands the value of how she feels towards him, and, in turn, becomes very loyal to her.
which, of course, is when he first runs into the issue of realizing that people don’t think through the same lens he does, and don’t necessarily share his thoughts and feelings about a given situation.
Tumblr media
this lens was born out of living a childhood where he was only allowed to focus on himself, where he protected himself by focusing on himself, and where his successes were viewed as being the most important aspect of himself. he knows he’s intelligent in the classroom -- but what he doesn’t realize is that that intelligence doesn’t translate whatsoever to how he understands the emotions of his peers. without the emotional connections made between his family and his peers throughout his childhood, he never had the chance to build his emotional intelligence.
the reason why machi (and yuki for that matter, as he was similarly only highly regarded for his status and similarly removed emotionally from his family and peers) don’t have a similar experience lies largely within the issues of self-esteem, control, learned helplessness.
learned helplessness ties to the concept of psychological resilience, which regards how well a person is able to regulate emotions, react, and cope with crisis situations. children, when exposed to adverse situations, are better able to build resilience when they have protective factors (namely good cognitive self-regulation and positive relationships with adults). learned helplessness stems from experiencing repeated adverse situations outside of one’s control, and eventually growing a sense of powerlessness.
machi in particular shows this sense of learned helplessness, as she doesn’t fight back against the adversity she continues to endure. we see this as she doesn’t confront her parents over their misunderstanding, when she’s confronted by the girls at school over what she thinks of yuki or the various rumors that go around about her, and seems to feel powerless over her own destructive reactions. yuki doesn’t show this so much, as he’s learned to become adamant about making his own decisions (choosing his high school, telling his mother that he’s going to be making his own decisions about his future), but his fight against his own self-doubt and sense of powerlessness is still rather fresh to him. it’s a constant battle against himself that he is consciously fighting.
Tumblr media
kakeru, on the other hand, never learned this sense of powerlessness. the moment he realized that he was being used, he confronted his mom, and she didn’t fight him back. he was shown that he was in control of his situation; while he experienced adversity as a child in the form of being used, he followed along because he wasn’t in a place to know better (“at first, i obediently went along with it and tried to live up to their demands. ‘cause, you know, when you’re a kid, your parents are everything.”) the control over his own life was handed over to him very easily, once he demanded it.
as a result, kakeru’s self-esteem doesn’t suffer in the same ways that yuki’s and machi’s do. while he was likely lonely as a child, and experienced a sense of loneliness once he realized that other people don’t necessarily share his point of view, he’s put in a position where he has control over his life.
the combination of a high self-esteem, sense of control, and lacking emotional intelligence is ultimately what creates this issue he has in which he not only assumes other people’s perspectives and emotions, but then feels the confidence to act on that assumption.
this combination ultimately is his personal downfall. his journey throughout the story is that of building emotional intelligence -- something that comes rather naturally to a number of the other characters, which is why his difficulty with it can come across as so abrasive to other characters and the reader.
however, it’s crucial to understand that he does realize this is something he has to actively work on. he doesn’t hurt people and ignore it. after hurting komaki (by first hurting tohru), he sets himself on a path to learn how to better see other people’s emotions and sympathize with their situations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this isn’t an easy position for him to put himself in -- for kakeru, it’s actually quite vulnerable, considering that he’s actually quite private about his personal feelings and relationships with other people (machi, komaki, and tohru specifically). but he understands the worth in understanding, and understands, after some downfalls, that he isn’t above other people’s emotions.
he decides to do the difficult thing because he understands the worth in doing so -- after leading a childhood that was largely lonely and self-focused, it’s integral for him to learn emotional intelligence in order keep these new relationships around. his means of seeking friendships, and meaningful relationships, requires him to do the hard thing and make a conscious, active change in how he perceives the world and his place in it.

One thing I hate most is being judged, accused, and/or scolded without being confronted. I know the things I've done weren't always great, but i also know that I've never done anything so bad I would later regret it.
Yet, it seems that more and more people seem to think that my silence means I'm guilty. It definitely doesn't. If I decide not to speak of an event, then it's probably because I was the victim, and I'm still hurting.
The most recent big event that's causing a lot of issues for me is a falling out with a person I used to think of as a best friend. I had trusted this person with... Well, everything. I always went out of my way to help them feel comfortable about who they were and tried my best to boost their confidence. I felt that it was necessary, as a friend. I thought all friends did that to each other. Little did I know that very few did that to me.
I didn't need it as much, thankfully. I have my sister, who's my own personal hype man. My mom also supports me. We may be closer than most families i know, but my mom and I aren't close enough for me to come out to her. About anything, actually. Still, i trust her with most things. So, I never needed my friends to truly be there for me. Except once.
I had just broken up with my first and to this day only boyfriend. I had been extremely cautious on who I accepted to date because I was acutely aware of how toxic people could be. My own father and his family being a prime example of that. I had already given up on trying to date someone when I noticed my feelings for my ex. We went out and after the honeymoon phase, I began to notice how similar he was to my father. I became anxious. I tried to reach out and instead was cut off.
Many of the people around me don't know the details. Not sure if I want to share them anymore either. But I'm writing this to vent and hopefully help someone else that went through a similar experience.
You see, the break up didn't hurt so much because he left. It hurt because I lost so much because of him. I lost his family. Whom I had gotten very close with as he refused to ever visit my family. So, we only ever went to his place. I lost my friends, because some of them refused to interact with me after he left. And I lost my peace. My anxiety was once again in control and I was fighting hard to keep everything together once again.
This was the one time I begged for support from those around me, and I quickly found out who to cut off from my life.
At the time, I had moved in with friend A and coworker B, who was dating another guys friend of mine at the time, C. They all faked being supportive at first. Telling me I should just ignore my ex and forget everything. He was never worth my time. Things like that. I had actually called C the night my ex broke up with me. I thought of C as my brother and all I wanted was for my bro to come over and comfort me. He didn't. He had things to do early the next morning and was in bed with B. So, neither of them were going to be there for me. It was only A who kinda distracted me with a drive, but she was so quick to add venom into me. Almost as if she wanted me to hate my ex. Which I did for a while. But it wasn't until I spoke with my still best friend, J, that I found the support I needed.
While all this was happening, i was struggling to finish my final semester before graduated with two bachelor's degrees. You can imagine the kind of stress I was going through as I was also fighting with the University to keep my scholarships for one last semester so that I could graduate. The funny part is that J knew exactly how I behaved. He knew the difference between the times I kept our talks short because I was busy, and when I kept our talks short because I was in distress. He asked me to hang out with him for a day. A day he could've easily filled up with catching up on school work, or being with family, or even spending time with his girlfriend. I still feel very touched remembering how he decided to try and help me instead. All because I didn't react like usual.
He didn't push me to say anything, but my ex came up in conversation and I had to tell J that we weren't dating anymore. That then spiraled into how pressured I felt with school and how unsupportive my roommates and C were being. I told him how A would react aggressively when were alone. Straight up calling me a bitch for ignoring her when I had homework to finish, but would then cry and say I was the abuser as I had blocked her on everything whenever B and C were around.
I told him how I had turned to B in hopes of getting advice, as she shared a room with A and would probably know what was going on with A. Instead, B had told A about all the negative things I said in a fit of rage and never once mentioned how I did want to fix our relation, but A had really destroyed my trust in her and had (has) yet to apologize. I told him how my ex would ignore me on dates and would only pay attention when we were physical with each other. Which made me want more physical interactions despite my general apprehension due to past trauma. And how my ex unceremoniously texted me that he was done because I got mad he wouldn't pause his game for like 5 minutes just to hear me out during an anxiety attack.
J calmly took all this in and advised that I move out. Not back in with my parents, but that it may be inevitable for me at the time. Then he warned me not to bottle up my hatred for my ex cause it would make me hate men in general. And I tried not to, but that hatred started with my dad. So, when C blocked me out of the blue, with no confrontation what so ever, I lost all the trust I had left. I mean, if the guy I thought of as a brother would rather listen to two women who know nothing about me just cause he's dating one of them, then how low were my standards? Why was it so easy for me to get betrayed? It happened with A, it happened with B, it happened with C.... And now he's happening with another friend, D. Who has yet to respond to any of the text messages I've sent her and has now started to hang out with A.
I once again turned to J. Asking if it was normal to feel hurt when a friend was still friends with someone who hurt you. J agreed it was painful but that ultimately I had to remember that they were their own person and that they were going to make their own decisions on what relationships to keep.
I felt discouraged but knew he was right.
As I type this up, I've had to pause a few times to wipe away tears. I think they sting when you feel a bit if anger when crying. Not sure.
Anyways, all this is to say that you'll never be free of selfish assholes. You'll live with them, you'll work with them, you'll move in with them, you'll befriend them, and nothing I say will help prepare you for the pain you'll feel when they reveal their true colors and destroy some part of you. Still, you should never change because of them.
I've given up on dating and friends because of these new experiences topping old traumas. I've been groomed, molested, raped probably, psychologically and emotionally manipulated and abused, all before entering seventh grade. I can't remember my childhood thanks to dissociative amnesia. So, instinctively, I no longer trust humans. It's a lovely existence and despite having won this battle before, I'm looking at suicide once again and am having to remind myself that I've already been through hardships. That all will be fine again. It's just a matter of time now.
But, fighting suicide is almost impossible without help. Without support. So, if you find yourself stuck with toxic people, with selfish assholes, with treacherous friends, cut them out.
We don't need them. They're a cancer that feeds off your good intentions and then blame you when they've dried your soul. It'll hurt a lot at first, but eventually, all will feel better. You'll find peace again. Maybe you'll connect with an old friend who'll always be there for you, like I did with J. Perhaps your siblings will be your own hype man like mine is. Maybe your relationship with your parents will get better like mine is with my mom. You'll finally start feeling better about yourself and try things that cancer wanted to steal from you. I've just gotten through a job interview and hopefully I'll be working at the office I've been trying hard to get into some time next week. Perhaps you'll also take the next step in your career?
So, to by fellow disappointed-in-humanity victims, sometimes it takes swimming in shit before being able to relax in a healthy mind. Take off those rose tinted glasses. Harden your heart and cut out people you know are hurting you. Don't listen to them, and if they take others with them, know that they also aren't worth your effort.
I would much rather be alone than be with a friend who believes I abused another person without ever talking to be about it. That's a person who'd rather believe your abuser than try and figure out why you would ever dare hurt someone. You don't need them.
I probably should like a bitch. Trust me, I get it. I often feel like I'm too harsh and that I should just unblock people to settle things down again. But you know what? I was very complacent and unmotivated when I had the people I blocked on my life. And now that I cut them out? I'm taking my first steps to establishing a career here in my town. Which is arguably a very hard town to settle in as a non-retiree.
Free yourself. Cut them off before they bleed you out

Hey what about Alfie were every evening after work on his walk home he sees the same girl walking to. One day she bumps into a man and he starts shouting at her so Alfie goes off at him. Then he ends up walking her home that night and every night after. And a relationship kinda develops between them. Then one night it's lashing rain and she shows up at his door upset cause the landlord had kicked her out without warning. He takes her in and maybe you could add a bit of smutty deliciousness.
//Alright so I kind of got carried away like I usually do. Since it got so long, I’m willing to do a second part just to fulfill the ending you were hoping for. Just send me another ask if you want me to continue and I’ll continue it there. Hope you enjoy this though!
            Having a routine was especially important to Alfie. If there was no routine then his whole operation could fall apart. It was just simpler to keep things on a schedule instead of cleaning up unnecessary messes.
            However, Ollie would argue that this was never his boss’s mentality. Not to say Alfie wasn’t organized, but he never had a consistent schedule. It only changed when for once, Alfie went home early.
            Not terribly early, but he was leaving the bakery before ten o’clock at night which was something rare. But work had been light that day so he decided to treat himself to an early evening at home.
            It was a bit strange walking through the streets before it was completely dark. The shops were all still open and the sidewalks weren’t as empty as they typically were later in at night.
            Cyril trotted alongside him as they headed home. But then, the bullmastiff suddenly stopped and tugged on his lead.
            “What?” Alfie grumbled and turned to see Cyril was stopped in front of a woman who was exiting the butcher’s shop. His tail wagged as he tried to sniff at the bag in her arms.
            “Oh, hello.” She giggled softly.
            “Oi, Cyril.” Alfie tried to rein in his beast of a dog. “Leave her alone. Sorry.” He apologized to her. “He ain’t got any shame.”
            “That’s alright.” She replied and met his eyes. Of course, she recognized him as Alfie Solomons. It was hard to live in a small area like Camden Town and not know about the gangster who practically owned every part of it.
            On the other hand, Alfie couldn’t quite remember if their paths had ever crossed before. He had it on good authority that he knew most of the people in the community. However, he was certain that if he had run into her before, he would never have forgotten her beautiful face.
            “He’s a very handsome dog.” She noted.
            “Oh, yeah. Well, thanks.” Alfie averted his eyes so it wouldn’t seem like he was staring.
            “Cyril, is that what you said his name was?”
            “Yeah, Cyril.” Damn it when had he ever been so tongue-tied in front of someone? It was almost embarrassing.
            She smiled and gave Cyril a rub behind the ears. “I’m sorry, I don’t have any treats for you.” She said with a smile.
            Alfie had standards. High standards, at least that’s what he liked to think. But seeing this beautiful woman being nice to his dog? Was that really enough to make him head over heels like a schoolgirl? He was seriously questioning how lonely he was.
            While he was lost in thought, the woman gave him a smile. “Have a good evening, Mr. Solomons.” She said politely before skirting around Cyril and crossing the street.
            Alfie’s lips formed to ask her a question, but his brain lagged and by the time he could get the sound out, she was already on her way around the corner.
            “Your name…” He muttered under his breath. “What’s your name?”
   ~~~~
            “Another early night, sir?” Ollie asked as he noticed Alfie was packing up his things and grabbing Cyril’s leash off the coat rack.
            “Y’know, Ollie boy, really ain’t healthy to work yourself to death.” He replied. “We all need proper time at night to settle in before bed, right?”
            His assistant looked confused but didn’t think it was his place to really ask for clarification. “Right, sir.”
            “Good lad.” He clapped him on the back and whistled for Cyril to follow him out the door.
     ~~~
            It was only wishful thinking that she would be in the same area as the night before. Alfie figured it was worth the shot though. At least he wanted to know her name since it was clear she knew his. That wasn’t too odd, most people knew him by name. What was baffling was that she seemed to have no issue talking to him. She didn’t just scurry away.
            It was interesting.
            Luckily for Alfie, she was there as he passed by the butcher’s shop. She was standing on the corner speaking with another woman.
            Alfie decided quickly not to interrupt them so he continued on pass as if he hadn’t seen her. Maybe it was best he didn’t know her name. The less connection there the less trouble he’d get himself into.
            He wasn’t deaf to the rumors he heard around Camden. Being associated with Alfie Solomons was a tricky subject. What else were people to think? The closer you were to a gangster, the closer you were to danger.
            Alfie knew he would only be putting his foot in his mouth if he tried to complain about it. After all, this was the image he’d cultivated for himself. The things people knew about him were probably true. Still, he was human and he craved nice things. Warm things, not cold things like money and jewels. Warmth, something severely lacking in his life.
            But he continued on home and tried to put her out of his thoughts.
~~~~
            Even though he’d failed the last time, he left work early again the next day. Alfie figured this would be his last try. If she wasn’t there or if he decided not to go up to her, then it wasn’t meant to be.
            But apparently, it certainly was meant to be.
            As Alfie walked down the same street, he heard someone shout.
            “Watch where you’re going!” Someone snapped.
            “I’m sorry, I didn’t see you.”  There she was standing on the same corner.
            A man was glaring her down, his hand balled into a fist. “Someone oughta teach you a lesson for being so careless.”
            Alfie didn’t need to run to the scene. He was close enough to yell out. “There a problem?”
            The man paled a bit when he saw Alfie Solomons striding towards him. “Mr. Solomons, no…no problem here.”
            “Heard ya talking to this lady here. Weren’t very nice. Is that how your mum taught you how to behave?” Alfie stopped in front of them, one hand gripping Cyril’s lead, the other resting on his cane.
            “Sorry, Mr. Solomons…”
            “Shouldn’t be me you’re apologizing to, mate.” His eyes were dark with anger. “So apologize to her or I’ll be the one teaching you a lesson.”
            “Sorry.” The man stammered out before quickly leaving before Alfie changed his mind.
            “Y’know, I didn’t catch your name last I saw you.” Alfie turned to the woman who was looking very relieved he had stepped in just in time.
            “I saw you yesterday but you didn’t stop to say hello.” She smiled at him.
            “Oh.” He looked a little guilty that she had seen him. “Well, didn’t want to interrupt your conversation. Wouldn’t be polite.”
            “Vivian.” She answered his question. “My name is Vivian.”
            “Do you want me to walk you home, Vivian?” He asked.
            She nodded. “Sure, that would be kind of you.”
 ~~~~
            What Vivian expected to be a one off thing evolved into a routine that neither she nor Alfie deviated from. She worked as a shop girl at the grocers a couple of blocks from the bakery. So, she started to meet Alfie at the bakery as he was leaving for work. From there, he walked her home.
            Alfie felt as if he was spoiling himself by spending so much time with a lovely woman. A woman who really had no business being around a man like him. But a few weeks into their arrangement, Vivian admitted that she found him very evenly tempered compared to the stories she heard about him.
            It was nice to speak to someone who looked at him differently than most others did. To her, he was just a man. Someone who took the time out of his evening to walk her home.
            Vivian confided in him that she was quite lonely. She didn’t have any family who lived locally and she worked so many hours that it was difficult to have a social life. In a way, she said, that it was just like she was merely surviving day by day. Working to keep her head afloat and going through the motions of keeping herself alive and well.
            Alfie couldn’t express enough how similarly he felt. Of course, he wasn’t struggling financially, but he couldn’t exactly retire either. He still had people out there looking for his head on a plate and they wouldn’t care whether he was retired or not. In a way, he needed to keep working to survive.
            But that conversation solidified the connection between the two of them. From then on, Alfie never felt quite as close to anyone else other than Vivian.
~~~~
            About a year after formally meeting, Alfie was home. He was lucky to have gotten Vivian and himself home before it began to pour. Now he was enjoying the rainy evening inside with a cup of tea by the fire.
            Until there was a banging on the door. Alfie rose and tucked his pistol into his waistband just in case.
            He opened the door to find Vivian soaked to the bone from the rain. She was crying. “Alfie, I’m so sorry, I don’t want to disturb you…”
            “S’alright.” He ushered her inside. “C’mon, get outta the cold. I’ll grab you a blanket, come sit by the fire.” He took her wet coat to hang up as she went into the parlor.
            Cyril greeted her warmly, his tail wagging happily.
            Alfie came into the room with a blanket to give to Vivian. “What’s wrong, love? Something happen?”
            “I was evicted. My landlord came in right after you left.” She tried to hold back her tears. “I can’t believe he would do this to me.”
            Alfie frowned. “Don’t worry. You’re not going anywhere.” He assured her. “I’ll talk to him tomorrow.”
            “Oh, Alfie, thank you but I don’t want to cause any trouble. I just didn’t know where else to go tonight. I have to fetch my things tomorrow morning. I-I’m not sure where I’m going to go. I just didn’t have anyone to go to except for you.” She explained tearfully.
            “Viv, it’s alright.” He sat down on the sofa and held out a hand for her to do the same. “You won’t need to go anywhere. Or we’ll get you into a nicer place, get you out of that shithole, aye?”
            “I can’t even afford the place I’m being evicted from, Alfie.” She sat down beside him.
            Alfie didn’t want to explicitly say he was going to buy her a new place, but he was already pretty set on the idea. Of course, what he would’ve really liked was to have her move in with him. To have her around all the time would be heaven, but that was a bridge they hadn’t crossed yet. “It’ll be just fine come morning.” He promised her. “I would never let you be out on the streets.”
            Vivian wiped her eyes and looked at him. “Alfie, I don’t think I’ve ever thanked you for how kind you’ve been to me all this time. I hope you know I don’t take you for granted.”
            He couldn’t help but chuckle a bit. “Love, I’m being selfish by being there for you. I should be thanking you.”
            “I don’t understand.”
            Alfie took a deep breath because he had a hunch that he was going to have to admit some feelings that he had towards her. In other words, the very things he thought he would never tell her. “You know me, you know the kind of person people think I am. Well…the kind of person they know I am. Ain’t always easy, is it? Being ‘ol Alfie Solomons, the boogeyman that parents warn their kids about.” He tried to sound humorous but it came out bitter. “Can only blame myself for it, right, but there are times when I need someone to think differently of me. Tryna fool myself into thinking I’m good by having someone else think I’m good. Make sense?”
            “I think that’s the excuse you make for yourself,” Vivian replied gently. She reached for his hand. “I think you want other people to be afraid of you. You don’t want to be vulnerable. No one gets far in life if they’re vulnerable.”
            “Hm.” He allowed her to take his hand.
            “That’s all?” She smiled slightly.
            He shrugged. “That’s what you think. Might be right. Can’t say I’m much for analyzing or whatever. Life’s too short.”
            “You’re right.” She agreed. “Life’s too short to waste time.”
            “Yeah? What are you wasting time on?” He asked curiously.
            “Not telling you how I feel.”
            Alfie raised an eyebrow and found himself a little speechless. “Well…I’ve got all the time in the world to listen. So, if you want to stop wasting time.”
            “I like you very much. I like how happy you make me.” She admitted quietly, wondering if he was reconsidering letting her inside his home. “And I would like to know if you felt the same way because
            “Because you assumed, I were the type of man who doesn’t like affection.”
            “Because I was worried you wouldn’t allow anyone to show you affection.” She corrected. “Because I think you deserve affection, but you don’t agree.”
            Alfie felt uneasy that she was really getting to the bottom line of who he was. Most people wouldn’t even scratch the surface yet here Vivian was, digging up his long-abandoned heart.
            She clearly saw the conflict in his eyes. “So, you can tell me to leave right now, and I will.” Her hand began to withdraw from his.
            There was only so much Alfie could say to her. If he started to confess how he felt then he was afraid he would talk himself out of it. Maybe he’d talk in circles and give her plenty of reasons to leave. So the only way he could show her without compromising himself was to kiss her.
            Vivian’s hand left his so she could rest it on the nape of his neck. There wasn’t any urgency to the kiss, in fact, they both just felt relief. Relief that their self-doubt hadn’t won over. Instead, they were both being vulnerable and it was working just fine. Great, even.
            When Vivian withdrew for a breath, she cradled Alfie’s cheek in her hand. He leaned into her touch.
            “Stay.” He said in the softest tone she’d ever heard from him. “I’m begging you to stay.”
No Freedom in Destruction
Tumblr media
In the latest chapter we see Shigaraki Tomura, a character that is supposedly free and liberated not depicted in triumph but rather naked and alone clinging still to one of the severed hands that All for One gave him.
At the idea of accomplishing his goal soon, Shigaraki does not look happy or sad, just mealncholic. He is empty staring at the hand in isolation, in front of an all white background. There are several hints in the aftermath of the villain arc that despite Shigaraki’s claims to have overcome anything, Shigaraki is someone still not free from his past. He is also someone who cannot find freedom no matter how much he destroys, because that is still what All for One wanted for him and nto Shigaraki’s own desires.
1. The Cycle of Abuse
Shigaraki cannot be free to develop into his own person, because he is still very much caught in the cycle of reacting to his own abuse. The reason he cannot develop a solid goal beyond destruction of everything, is because his destruction is a lashing out meant to vent his emotinos, because Shigaraki has no other healthy outlet for the way he accumulates stress.
Tumblr media
 Horikoshi is clearly exploring the cycle of abuse, and the effects of long term abuse in regards to Shigaraki’s character. It’s not just there to provide a sympathetic backstory of him, it informs about him as a person.  Horikoshi clearly understands cycles of stress and lashing out, because he literally made that Re-Destro’s entire ability, to slowly accumulate stress and turn it into strength to destroy whatever is around him. Both Re-Destro and Shigaraki’s quirks are effected directly by their emotions and their mental states, and stress for Shigaraki literally translates into destruction for his decay quirk.
Let’s define the cycle of abuse in simplified terms to provide a working definition to this meta. Abuse comes about because characters are unable to handle their stress in a healthy way, and therefore they use other people as an outlet for their stress. The primary cause is an inability to process emotions, like sadness, anger, any kind of negative emotions like a healthy developed adult on your own.
Not only will abusers be affected by this cycle, but victims will as well. Because the root cause is not being able to process your own emotion. If you are stuck in an environment where you can never healthily express emotions, and no one is there to show you how to find healthy expressions of emotions, the way you handle your emotions is inevitably going to be warped. Especially when one of the biggest factors of abuse, isolation comes into play because you have no outside environment to provide you with an alternative.
Tumblr media
To compare this to Shigaraki’s backstory, Tenko exists in an environment isolated from his family where his own emotions are denied.
Tumblr media
This is due to his father who cannot handle the stress of his own mother abandoning him, and has clearly unresolved wounds that he chooses to take out on his own son rather than confronting it. We see Koutarou’s tensions building, an incident where he explodes. Then after that Koutarou calms down because his emotions have been vented, but Koutarou does not address the root issue and Tenko is left completely alone.
Tumblr media
In that environment, not only does Shigaraki receive no meaningful comfort or resolution for his feelings when he is the one being hurt, as most often when these incidents happen the family sides with Koutarou. His only model on how to healthily handle his anger is Koutarou, who himself cannot handle those emotions.
Shigaraki grew up in an unhealthy environment that stunted his ability to handle his emotions. The way he processes them now is inevitably shaped by this cycle. Shigaraki did not grow up to become an abuser himself (literally, notice the way that Shigaraki treats every single person he has power over now, he has a healthy relationship of equals between every member of the league and talks to them all as people). However, the way he processes his emotions inevitably reflects his abusers because this is how he has been taught to handle his feelings.
Tumblr media
From the point that he is recovered by All for One, Shigaraki is actively enouraged never to handle his emotions in a healthy way. He is told to hold onto stress and let it accumulate. That he should feel stress, anger, sadness all the time, let it explode, and then reset and keep feeling this way.
Tumblr media
Shigaraki describes a constant, itch that persistently bothers him no matter what he does. This itch that he is plagued by is clearly a psychological wound due to being in a negative, highyl stressful environment, but Shigaraki himself does not see it that way because he has never existed in a healthy environment. He has no idea what it feels like, so he cannot make the connection that the itch he feels is a result of his own broken and damaged emotions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is the thing about the second phase the incident or the explosion. The ugly truth about human psychology is that people lash out because lashing out feels good. It’s venting. Acting on those emotions clears those emotions up. By temporarily indulging in violence, Shigaraki is able to clear away the extreme amounts of stress that piles up for him.
However, while venting clears the emotions away it is not a permanent solution to the problem. This is why even though he acts on his urge to lash out, that lashing out never makes the itch permanently go away for Tomura.
Tumblr media
Shigaraki himself in his narration even acknowledges that he thought the itch might have gone away, if somebody else had comforted him, rather than him having to continually lash out to make it go away. If he had healed instead of staying scarred and picking at that wound forever.
It’s at this point we get to All for One’s manipulation. Rather than attributing Shigaraki’s itch as basic human psychology, and a response to the trauma he’s suffered, All for One instead insists part fo what Shigaraki’s survivors guilt already tells him that he wanted to destroy, and that he wanted to destroy his family all along. He pushes the idea on Shigaraki that he is some inhuman thing with backwards psychology that longs for destruction, and that the itch comes as a result of him holding himself back.
Tumblr media
Except we have seen several times that the itch is a response to stress, and that even when he vents and destroys as All for One tells him to do the itch always comes back. That’s because venting does not solve the problem, and strength will inevitably accumulate again.
Tumblr media
All for One’s plan is to always keep him in a stressed out state, so he will never hold back, and also never develop into anything other than what All for One wants for him to be, which is just a pure destructive force. Shigaraki is meant to lash out, and lash out, until there is nothing left.
Tumblr media
So, here we are in Shigaraki’s cycle. He is constantly made to feel sick and horrible about himself, and because of that he vents to clear his feelings. Afterwards he feels a moment of relief and thinks that his venting is the only thing that cures his feelings, only to let them accumulate again because he cannot handle those emotions in any healthy way. He is literally scratching and picking at a wound until it gets infected.
Tumblr media
And this is what it renders Shigaraki into. Someone who hates everything, someone who gets no enjoyment out of life, someone who believes his pain will never end no matter what he accomplishes.
Tumblr media
Shigaraki wants to destroy everything, because he just wants those feelings to go away. He thinks if he destroys everything, that will somehow amount to relief. It’s the same logic of committing suicide because you can no longer handle living. It’s not the result of Shigaraki being some unknowable and unreasonable being that thirsts only for destruction. It’s Shigaraki wanting a release, an escape, and being so desperate he would do anything to make these feelings go away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Shigaraki Freeing Himself in My Villain Academia
So with all of that in mind, you can read Shigaraki’s actions in the most recent arc not as liberating himself, but rather once again venting his own stress through violence and losing control.
Tumblr media
At the start of this arc, Shigaraki is called once again to prove himself to All for One. He spends an entire month fighting with gigantomachia in the woods, barely taking care of himself, and not eating or sleeping. Not only that but immediately afterwards without giving him a break the league is threatened, and one of his members is kidnapped. He goes from one impossible battle to the other, and Shigaraki’s response is the same as always, because that is how he copes.
Tumblr media
If something is in his way, if something is hurting him, he just destroys it. That’s what All for One raised him to do. We see during the battle against the MLA Shigaraki shows extreme signs of his mental health deteriorating. His perception of reality degrades, he starts dissociating from his body. When we see Shigaraki’s perspective in the story, it’s shown trauma is something that hs rendered him severely mentally ill.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only that but Shigaraki’s mental state is tied directly to his quirk, he starts losing control of his quirk and it’s power increases at the same time that he’s experiencing this breakdown.
Shigaraki then is beaten within an inch of his life by Rikiya and has several trauma flashbacks in the middle of the fight. This is where he’s basically at his lowest point. At which point Shigaraki reaffirms All for One’s narrative, and says that he himself has no plans for the future. That’s the point, it’s incredibly unhealthy for him to think this way, it’s not liberating at all he’s repeating bad and unhealthy habits. He’s doing what all for one has repeatedly told him will free him. His heart has not become lighter, it’s only becoming more and more heavy. Not only that but when talking about how he doesn’t need a future Shigaraki sounds downright suicidal no longer caring whether he lives of dies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see him symbolically break the hands around him, only for him  to reutrn to wearing the hand again after the incident. This is because, the hands are symbolic for Shigaraki not having control over his own life and being in the grips of others.
Tumblr media
Shigaraki believes he has shaken off the trauma of what happened to his original family by lashing out, but he’s still underneath the hand of All for One, his father figure and the one who taught him that lashing out will free him. Until Shigaraki escapes from All for One he is incapable of being truly free.
Tumblr media
Shigaraki’s desire for liberation is the genuine thing. He may have only falsely liberated himself in the My Villain Academia arc, but that does not mean the freedom that Shigaraki was fighting for was wrong to begin with. He has felt trapped his whole life and continually fights back against what traps him. It’s that desire that should push him to reject what All for One told him freedom was, and instead come to define what freedom means for himself.
Only when Shigaraki is able to feel for himself, decide for himself what he wants, and free to define himself as an indvidual will he truly be free. That is what freedom entails for this character, Shigaraki being his own person, instead of just existing in reaction to the abuse he has endured his entire life.
MD KaiJou Ideas - Part 3
Jonouchi: Starting scenarios
See Part 1 here
See Kaiba Scenarios here
See Combined Scenarios here
See Mid-arc Dramas here
In the event that Jou makes the first move (or is the first one pining), it generally becomes a case of time spent slowly convincing Kaiba (should one want it to be a healthy relationship). Often this may happen because Jonouchi is able to interact with Kaiba on a regular basis.
E.g. Jou provides coffee for Kaiba consistently
Below are various scenarios that may help to trigger this change in his life.
1) Jounouchi is feeling lonely as his friends have left town for various reasons
This will cause Jonouchi to connect with familiar faces like Kaiba and Mokuba
Can add a bit of angst by having the main friend group breaking down over time
Add a bit of lost contact with Yugi for an extra lonely Jou
2)  Jonouchi has become a big fan of Kaiba / has a massive crush on Kaiba
Either due to something Kaiba recently did, or just growing in appreciation in general
Could have Jou entering comps and events just to see Kaiba
Can end up very one-sided on Jou’s part
Could turn this into Hanahaki Disease if you want a bucket of angst. This generally becomes a bittersweet ending at best, unless he can be brought back to life somehow.
3) Jonouchi has become an influencer
His popularity could lead to meeting Kaiba for business reasons (at first)
Brings Jonouchi up towards Kaiba re:fame while not being completely subordinate to him
That being said he could shill for Kaiba Corp products
4) Jonouchi has begun a job at the Kaiba residence
This allows Jou to have a behind-the-scenes understanding of Kaiba and allows for more interactions without it feeling forced
Kaiba will be less guarded at home
5) Jonouchi gains access to an AI version of Kaiba who is sentient
He may have encountered this by accident (a bug in the software perhaps), or possibly Kaiba Corp has made AI duelists available to everyone.
Jou forms a bond with the AI.
Bonus points if it’s the AI that falls for Jou first.
Jou may choose the AI over the real Kaiba, but this could be a somewhat bittersweet compromise.
Bonus drama if the real Kaiba finds out and wants to delete the AI.
6) Jonouchi has just started working at Kaiba Corp
So long as the job ensures a regular contact with Kaiba then it should work.
Has the issue of Kaiba being his boss, which can add drama but also unhealthy relationship dynamic
7) Jonouchi needs Kaiba’s help to save X person
May need to add in a second scenario as the rescue wouldn’t be enough of a catalyst to start a relationship.
Bonus points if he asks via Mokuba
If it’s his sister, the antagonist could tie into his old gang days or his father getting into debt somehow.
8) Jonouchi is suicidal
The idea being that Kaiba stops Jonouchi from suicide (via Kaiba Corp tower, or bridge, or wherever) and starts to interact with him.
Requires Kaiba to have mellowed enough that he would want to stop Jonouchi.
Can lead to a major personality shift in Jou if not careful.
9) Jonouchi is studying for college
This generally needs to be paired with another scenario, but can allow for Jonouchi to become more driven to achieve a career.
This can be a way to reveal his dedication and hard working nature by trying to cram in study between his part-time jobs.
10) Jonouchi is an upcoming idol / singer / performer
He could seduce Kaiba with his singing haha (either intentional or not)
Can also allow him a leg into the world of fame, levelling him more with Kaiba.
Can go into darker narratives around fame, drugs, etc
11) Jonouchi becomes a prodigy the same way Kaiba was trained
This is a more niche scenario - but the gist is that Jonouchi is put through the same abusive training that Kaiba was subjected to in his youth. Usually done by someone working for a rival company to Kaiba Corp in order to raise a competitor.
The training could be for anything. Dueling, Idol, Assassin, etc
This is a way for Jou to become insanely good at whatever he is being trained in, in a short amount of time
As a result, the sudden change in Jonouchi is something Kaiba would be curious enough to investigate (‘how did he get so talented?’)
This would put Jou on the same skill level as Kaiba
This also, most importantly, provides a way for Kaiba to empathise with Jou (as they were trained through the same method).
This can be a dark narrative depending on what level of abuse Jou suffers. Could even break Jou completely.
They could be threatening his family, making it harder for him to escape the training
Can lead to major personality shift in Jou
Main goal for this scenario is for Jou to break free of the company
That’s it for Jou! Next up are Combination scenarios.
an idiot’s guide to the wayne family.
now complete with new diagrams! i wish i wash kidding, ive really made a diagram to help illustrate this.
Tumblr media
[ follow the link here for actual visible quality. thanks tumblr.]
some points to make quickly -
• this is not complete. there were probably more siblings and wives and children, but i just focused on the main lineage i could piece together from DC knowledge
• apologies for the lack of knowledge on the women in the family past the last century. this is unfortunately common in real life too, as women were not landowners etc, and without a marriage certificate they basically don’t show up on records. dc happily talk about the male line but not about the wives and daughters so :/
• the dates are fairly made up, and especially at the bottom are just me twisting things to fit my own personal canon
• and finally, i just wanted to say that while this is pieced together from what DC have told us, there are a lot of holes that i have filled with headcanons. not all of this is canon. sometimes i just want to give a person a cool life that dc are too cowardly to do.
so, although this varies by “earth”, i have tried to combine the various histories given for pre- and post-52 waynes into a full comprehensible timeline. i’ve probably failed, but this is what i’m sticking with.
to start with we’re supposed to believe that there was a norse guy calling himself the Bat-Man, running around in the 10th century killing frost giants. is it plausible? yes. is it exaggerated? most definitely. am i wiping it from existence because it was one issue in a faintly terrible run that has technically been retconned anyway? absolutely. ignoring that makes the earliest recorded ancestor of the wayne family a man called gawayne de weyne, a french crusader in the 14th century. on some earths he’s called lancelot wayne (too on the nose) or harold wayne (thanks i hate it), so im personally going to retcon that and just say gawayne is it. also because i love the etymological aspect of the name beginning as de weyne in old high french and it slowly changing through out the centuries. gawayne, also sometimes written as gevain, was one of the knights sent to retrieve the holy grail, but, as knights tended to do, he died. sorry gawayne. the weirdest part about all of this is that he asked for his heart to be embalmed, and there’s a plot line revolving around this (batman: scottish connection). now i’m not saying that madness runs in the family, but the waynes absolutely do not get a good head start in history.
gawayne must have had at least one surviving heir who goes on to have babies etc etc, and eventually we get to the 16th century, and the next instance of the waynes. specifically, contarf wayne. which, i have to say, super dumb name. if i ever have a kid, im calling it contarf. so it’s now the 1500s and the waynes have somehow become scottish, probably from getting given land after crusading and that. apparently gawayne was aknight of the scottish court, despite being french, which actually happened a lot back then. literally the only notable thing contarf does with his life is build castle wayne, and i swear these people are all born with both madness and a flair for the dramatic. yes at some point bruce does go to this gloomy scottish castle where it’s always rainy and stormy and fits right on in, so that’s terrifying.
around a hundred years later nathaniel wayne tries to emigrate across to the “new world”. nathaniel likes witchhunting, and has come over to what will one day be the US following a witch fleeing from england - annie. annie who he may have dated. annie who may be pregnant with his child. good on you nathaniel, that’s a healthy relationship you’ve got right there. after the baby is delivered, he finds her and. you know, people were not kind of witches back then, so she dies. and with her dying breath, curses nathaniel and all his descendants. which includes her OWN BABY (super punk move), and one day bruce wayne. this curse manifests in very few of the extant waynes surviving beyond 40, often going mad, and absolutely tuning on each other. nathaniel’s particular grisly end comes when his is the fateful colony that ends up in what-will-one-day-be-gotham (see my idiots guide to gotham for more juicy details), releasing the deacon blackfire from his little cave and ending up missing, presumed dead. (definitely dead). this is the start of the “waynes probably should avoid gotham” saga. spoiler alert - they don’t.
somewhere in the interluding 100 years, a branch of the waynes do actually successfully make it over into the americas. 2 brothers, caleb and thomas simon wayne, reach the east coast from britain, and go their separate ways. caleb joins a convoy heading out west, leading a wagon train, and, as so many pioneers do, he also dies, while trying to make this trip. but caleb really isnt the interesting brother here (sorry man), because what thomas gets up to is far more exciting. he settles in, lo and behold, the newly formed town of gotham, and for some strange reason (probably because all the waynes are fairly nuts, as we’ve established at this point) decides to give devil-worshipping a go. maybe its fucking curse. maybe its something in the water. maybe its maybelline. but whatever it is, thomas wayne tries to summon and ensnare the demon barbatos by killing some innocents, in a wild, but understandable, attempt to gain immortality. he doesn’t succeed. or does he. it half works - instead of summoning the bat-demon (yes the same bat-demon that the founding fathers later summon and also trap beneath gotham) he gets one of darkseid’s hyper-dimensional bounty hunters, and some how, through some space age magic, the energy of this event corrupts him into agelessness/slowed ageing, we’re not totally sure. later dear old tom pops back up as the villainous dr simon hurt, and literally fights his own descendant. DC give no fucks.
after the whole corrupting not-magic thing, but before he disappears, thomas/simon impregnates one of his cult’s disciples. a lot. (is this why the waynes can look 30 at 50? more on this at 10) and between 1747 and 1771 (because immortal people also have immortal sperm apparently), she bears him 3 sons. probably some daughters too but again, who cares about that. not DC, that’s for damn sure. these sons are all absolutely fucking insane, just like daddy dearest. the eldest, who is LITERALLY known as “mad” anthony wayne, is said to be the spitting image of bruce, which is confirmed through some time travelling bs that we’re not going to think about. anthony and horatio wayne, the middle brother, both sign up to fight in the revolutionary war. unfortunately THE CURSE STRIKES AGAIN and horatio perishes while burning british ships. anthony goes on to becomes a brigadier general, serving directly under george washington and pulls some crazy good strategies that help to kick the british out of new jersey, earning his nickname of “mad” anthony, because only someone fucking nuts could come up with these plans, and pull them off. the youngest brother darius wayne is only 4 when the war breaks out, and is therefore too Babey to fight, but does later become notable for being the man to start construction on wayne manor. in 1795, using the money inherited from his brother horatio on his death, he hires an architect nathan van derm, to begin planning and building. sadly darius will never see it completed, with funds dwindling and his older brother’s death, eventually darius takes his own life.
not to worry, he leaves behind 2 sons - herkimer and charles wayne. literally herkimer’s only notable feature is that he fights in the war of 1812. sorry my guy, DC hate you. charles, on the other hand, is a businessman, who manages the failing company his father had left behind and starts to grow the wayne fortune. charles buys more land surrounding the manor, as well as a lot of general gotham real estate, and is the man accrediting for starting wayne enterprises as a series of several small business, ranging from merchant trading to land ownership to mining, in 1845. however charlie contracts tuberculosis at the ripe old age of 62 and shuffles off the mortal coil.
the oldest of his sons, charles lincoln wayne, also known as charles junior, does 2 things - begins construction on the wayne manor again in 1855 after purchasing it back from jerome k. van derm, the destitute son of the original architect, who had been living in the bones of the construcion, and uses a considerable portion of his inheritance to build the gotham botanical gardens in 1870. the next son, winslow wayne, is another enigma - the only thing mentioned about him in the comics is that he fought alongside teddy roosevelt, which i’m guessing is in the spanish-american war. but the youngest two brothers, joshua thomas and solomon zebadiah wayne are the real spicy pair. not only do they tackle the bat infestation on the manor grounds, but the pair work to change the federal system of america - joshua, when he’s not managing the wayne companies, is an abolitionist who engages in secret missions to free slaves by getting them across the border into canada, and solomon, the vaguely more sensible of the two, becomes a judge, attempting to be as fair and incorruptible as possible. sadly joshua is killed due to his slave smuggling antics (THE CURRSSEE), and this sends solomon slightly nuts, and causes him to contract the architect cyrus pinkney, who is even more nuts, to basically. build gotham. these two men are the reason 97% of buildings have gargoyles on them.
solomon has only 1 child before he dies, who fortunately, grows up to be a very shrewd businessman capable of growing wayne ent even through with the advent of shipping and rail sectors. this man, alan wayne, constructs the original wayne tower in 1888, and it completely swamps the gotham skyline. he also marries catherine van derm, the great granddaughter of the original architect of wayne manor, and finally manage to complete and move in to the building in 1895, exactly 100 years after the project was started. for a while they are very happy, and catherine falls pregnant. but this darn curse just won’t leave these wayne boys alone, and in 1897, catherine dies giving birth to their son, kenneth wayne. a year later, lost and traumatised and going insane thinking about his wife’s death alan wayne mysteriously disappears (read as: fell down a well and was maybe or maybe not tortured and killed by the court of owls).
kenneth wayne, raised as virtually an orphan, turns out to have his papa’s business management skills, and, foreseeing america's impending industrialisation in the 20s and 30s, makes some risky moves that pay off, including the advent of wayne chemicals, and wayne ent expands yet again. kenneth, like the recurring pattern that you can see here, dies fairly early due to WW2 however, leaving his wife laura to care for their 4 sons AND the company, which she does like a boss ass bitch. seriously, women barely had the vote and she was already a titan of industry and raising 4 teenage boys like. massive props to you babe. these boys are
ishmael wayne, a whaler who is an incredible parody of captain ahab and also dies trying to catch a white whale, elwood wayne, who goes and reclaims what is now called waynemoor castle in scotland, living there until his death, silas wayne, who may or may not be a thief posing as a wayne because the real silas died, AND at long last, patrick wayne - bruce’s granpappy, who founded the wayne tech arm of the company at 20 years old, aiding the war effort, and where this stupidly long post ends, because there is 0 point in me recounting the lives of thomas, bruce, or any of his children. everyone knows them. could i write more about thomas’ siblings and the kanes and how they tie in? yes. but this post is like 2100 words long and i want to sleep at some point today so this will have to do askjdbjsdhgf
