Yokaitober, Days 5-8
I know its the 16th and over halfway through the month, but I promise I have been (mostly) keeping up with Yokaitober. My issue is that building habits is hard, and I am definitely out of habit on posting to tumblr.
In the second series of yokai for the month, I covered a pretty wide variety of creatures, including the jubokko, a bloodthirsty tree that was actually created in the 20th century; Keizobo, one of five famous kitsune from Inaba; the yogen no tori, a helpful, pandemic-predicting raven that was "seen" only one time; and the hinoshu, a rock-like yokai the size of a germ who lives in people's spleens.
If you'd rather not wait for me to remember to post these yokai before seeing them, you can always sign up to follow me over on Patreon, where I post new yokai (almost) every day of October. Plus, if you pledge as little as $2/month, you can get access to some other great 5e homebrew, including new magic items, spells, and monsters, every single week.

Airmark's Guide to Planar Vegetables: Oblivion Yam
Tumblr media
These huge, black-skinned tubers are among the few edible vegetables native to the Elemental Plane of Mud, and have evolved defenses to account for this. Tall and wide as the average humanoid, oblivion yams have soft reddish flesh within that has a starchy taste. They are best cooked, as raw their flesh is quite hard.
Oblivion yams grow leafy stalks above ground level when sedentary, and tolerate waterlogged conditions well; however, when threatened, the tuber breaks off from these stalks to burrow away from would-be attackers. If they cannot escape, they fight by spraying a complex acid in precise bursts from the broken stump of their stalk. Left to escape, oblivion yam stalks grow back at a ferocious rate, growing taller than a standard humanoid within only a few days.
However, the most remarkable feature of the oblivion yam is its mud-armoring ability: tiny roots all over the tuber collect sediment and other harder elements of their surroundings when burrowing to form a tough shell to protect the tuber from damage. Despite their slow speed, oblivion yams being pursued have few reasons to stay still when under attack, so they can refresh this protective coat.

Fun fact- lickitung couldn't learn lick in gen 1. It was exclusive to the Ghastly and Jynx lines. And...look, it's the end of the year. I'm gonna be real, my creativity's a bit burnt out from the holiday rush. maybe I'll come back and add encounter ideas later, but I'm just kinda out of it. Seriously, every entry for both of these just says it has a big tongue with paralyzing saliva. I've got little to go off here. and all my searches just say they're based on a yokai that licks the walls of old bathrooms? Which exists for some reason? So we're doing this without the descriptions like I used to. I'm gonna take a small hiatus to recover now, but I'll be back to posting when I can! I'll be back, and in the meantime will still be on youtube and posting the stuff I make for there. I know, it's not the same, but I need to take a break from one of the two to get any amount of freetime. The youtube algorithm will sweep away all my progress in 2-3 weeks, tumblr won't. I'll come back. I always do.

[ID: A digitally coloured ball point pen drawing of Caleb Widogast from Critical Role. He is visible from the neck up, looking to the right with a slightly nervous expression. He is covered in dirt. End description.]
Been a little over five years since I started watching Critical Role and did my very first piece of fanart of Caleb so I did a little dirt wizard doodle in celebration!

Arcanatober Days 8 & 9– Green Hag Keeper / Sphinx’s Wheel
Alright, so I totally drew a card and made a homebrew based on it yesterday, I swear. But I also went on a 3-hour (actually 4.5 hour) car ride to a cabin in the woods and forgot to post it. But now I’ve got yesterday and today’s creations to post together, which is in a way even better. The cards for these were, respectively, The Hierophant/The Witch & The Wheel of Fortune/The Twins. I don’t wanna get into all the little intricacies that inspired them here, but maybe you can pick out the different meanings and details of each card that inspired them

Airmark's Guide to Planar Vegetables: Pollen Cat
Tumblr media
One of the more unusual specimens found throughout the planes is the pollen cat, a creature comprised solely of a thick soup of pale greenish fluff compacted into the form of an enormous hunting cat. Diurnal by nature and fairly docile even among residents of the Blessed Fields, pollen cats are nightmares to those with severe allergies to either pollen or cats, as they mysteriously set both off.
Typically found stalking petitioners to playfully pounce upon them and enforce heartwarming snuggles or much-needed rest, pollen cats are more than capable of defending themselves when needed. Despite not needing to eat, as they gain sustenance from rain and sun like most plants, they are equipped with sharp claws and long teeth like real predatory cats.
These natural weapons' purpose becomes apparent when the forces of the Heavens mass for combat, or fight defensive wars against intruding interests from the Lower Planes. Pollen cats are consummate skirmishers, attacking in a flurry of claws and bites before dissolving their form into a cloud of tiny particles, and retreating to set up another pounce. Given time, they will hunt down intruders one by one, picking them off as they travel through the cat's hunting grounds.
Pollen cats bulk up in spring before bursting and separating into two full-grown adult specimens, which are of low density for some time until they are able to replenish their forms with water and sun. When spoken to with Speak with Plants, they are straightforward creatures with a bit of a sense of humor, and make good traveling company.
