I love you writing and I was hoping you could write Ben Florian x VK!Reader the reader is Lefou's kid. A soulmate AU where the negative things you think about yourself are marked on your soulmate's skin. Reader only has one or two things because Ben is from Auradon and has a good life and family. While Ben has around half a dozen. Reader is the one who gives Ben the love potion. During the lake scene they notice Ben is their soulmate and tries (but fails) to hide it thinking he deserves better

There really is no good place for a prince. They are political figureheads in every sense of the phrase— too young to actually rule, too old to be allowed to skip state functions. They sit in corners of expensive meetings and cut ribbons in front of newly opened buildings, but they can’t do a whole lot except smile and pose.
Shame your friend seems so fixated on capturing one, then. It feels like you’ve just barely left the Isle of the Lost, only bid farewell to the entirety of your prior life experience hours ago, and yet already Mal is scheming about how to best tear down everything around you. If Prince Ben is the best way to fulfill her nefarious plans, then so be it.
The only problem is that you’re now involved in all of this, too. Mal wants a wand and so she’ll take a prince to get there, but as one of her best friends, you’ve been drafted into the plot to catch a prince. Ben won’t have any idea what’s coming. Shame, he would probably run if he had any clue.
Mal’s good at covering her tracks, though, she always has been. You can remember elaborate plans from when you were much younger to steal cookies or cloaks, spellbooks and shoes. At this point, hearing Mal tell you that she’s going to bewitch the crown prince of Auradon into falling in love with her shouldn’t surprise you, just the fact that she’s taken this long to come up with the idea.
Usually, you have no problem going along with Mal’s little adventures. They’re entertaining, at the least, a good way to pass a few days when you’ve already gone over every alleyway and hiding place on the Isle at least a dozen times in the last month. The issue is that you’re not on the Isle anymore, and maybe– just maybe– disrupting everything here isn’t entirely what you want to do.
Mal doesn’t know this, of course. None of your fellow VKs do. Every time they monologue and moan about how they can’t wait to get out of this place, you find yourself holding your tongue, biting back your real thoughts about how the school isn’t actually as bad as you feared. Sure, the constant judgment from the other children of princes and princesses isn’t all that fun, but Auradon Prep has its positives, too. For one thing, you think your soulmate might be here.
What a terrible thing for the child of a villain to prioritize. You’ve heard Mal scoff at the idea of a soulmate, and although Evie is certainly more interested in the idea than some of your other friends, you’re still not sure that you’d find a welcome audience amongst their ranks when it comes to tracking down your soulmate. After all, the odds of that soulmate being from Auradon and not the Isle are pretty high. They’ve all but told you that themselves.
All things considered, for a society with such control over magic and spells, it’s pretty difficult to find your soulmate. You’d always wondered why those in charge couldn’t shorten the whole affair to something more simple– a name on the wrist, perhaps, or an invisible string that only the two of you could see– but instead, soulmate magic went the complicated route. How lovely.
The story about the origin of the soulmate magic is convoluted and ancient, going back generations and changing with each family. The general consensus is that soulmates were created to preserve the sanctity of true love, with the idea that soulmates should be able to love each other entirely, flaws and all. So, when you think something negative about yourself, those very same thoughts will show up on the skin of your soulmate, something like a warning label for what they’re going to get themselves into.
This is all well and good for people with few negative thoughts, maybe they’ll have something here and there about a bad sports result or a poor test grade that their soulmate can chuckle over before meeting them. For you, though? You, the child of a villain, cursed to live forever on a too-small island with the other convicts and criminals, you have had more fears and hated things about yourself than most. Your soulmate must be covered in unhappy musings, which only makes you feel worse about yourself than before. A self-perpetuating cycle of the worst kind.
By contrast, the startling absence of your soulmate’s negative thoughts on your own skin makes you certain that they couldn’t be from the Isle of the Lost. There are only one or two fears on your skin, proof of loving parents and a stable home, and they’re minor things like a bad hair day or a fear of not doing their absolute best. These change, often leaving every few months to be replaced by something else insignificant.
What makes you most certain that your soulmate is the child of a royal is the one negative thought that has stayed on your skin since the very beginning. Your soulmate, whoever they are, is terrified that they will let down the king and queen. Only someone with close ties to the royalty could have such a fear, so it’s proof that your soulmate is somewhere here on Auradon.
So maybe you don’t want to leave this place, not yet. Not until you can learn who your soulmate is. It’ll be almost impossible to track them down on this information alone, but supposedly that’s how the whole thing is supposed to work. You learn about the worst parts of your soulmate, and then you get to love the best of them. The only problem is that you’re fairly sure that if your soulmate is a royal, they won’t want to love you at all.
It’s easier to ignore the whole affair. Easier to agree to Mal’s plan when she proposes enchanting Prince Ben. At least another one of your friend’s schemes will keep your mind off the soulmate affair.
That’s what you tell yourself, at least, but your conscience is starting to get steadily more vocal as the days go by. Ben is a nice guy, which hurts, surprisingly. Although the love spell may have been cast on Mal, as one of Mal’s closest friends, you’re around the two of them all the time. The boy you see is someone that you wish could be your soulmate. He may be a prince, and you may be a villain, but he makes you want to believe in love after all.
You certainly have the capacity for such musings. For some reason, the love spell didn’t take all that well, and although Ben is now compelled to stay with Mal more than he was before, it’s not like he’s totally obsessed with her as Mal had hoped. Mal claims it’s because love spells can never work fully due to the soulmate issue, like having a soulmate is a kind of shield to protect you against that sort of enchantment, but regardless, Ben has just enough independent thought that he can tell you jokes and try to make you smile like– well, like he tries to do with Mal.
The realization that Ben is a genuinely good person, and worse, someone you don’t want to trick, haunts you as you fall further into Mal’s scheme. You’ve been trying to push the whole thing from your mind, letting Ben join your soulmate in the depths of your mind you don’t want to touch, but your train of thought keeps circling back to him despite your best attempts otherwise.
Besides, it doesn’t help that Mal keeps trying to involve you in the plot. Right now, the two of them are at the Enchanted Lake, out on a cute little date. Mal had been making mock disgusted faces at you the whole time she was getting ready, but some part of yourself can’t stop whispering that this doesn’t seem so bad, actually, that the thought of being out here alone with Ben would make for a wonderful day instead of the tedious chore Mal is making it out to be.
Ben doesnt know you’re here, though. Mal wanted backup in case something happened, so you’re lingering in the woods to keep anyone from stumbling upon the scene and also holding onto more magical baked goods in case Mal feels the need to renew the spell. It’s kind of like torture, strolling through this beautiful forest, knowing that Ben is so close and you are helping hold him under the thrall of this plot.
The storm in your mind must be thundering too loudly for you to think straight, because you lose track of yourself and accidentally walk too close to the lake. You weren’t supposed to be spotted, but before you can back away and melt back into the foliage, Ben looks up and sees you. You panic, immediately heading the way you’d come, but you hear footsteps after you moments later and Ben manages to track you down before you can go too far. Mal is so going to kill you for messing with her plan.
“Sorry,” you murmur, eyes wide when he finally catches up to you, “I didn’t realize the two of you were– I’ll go now.”
Ben shakes his head. “No, no, it’s alright. It’s not like we have a monopoly on the woods.”
He’s dripping water, most likely due to a recent dip in the lake, and you can’t seem to stop your gaze from following the path of the droplets as they cascade down his shoulders, across his hands, and, most importantly of all, over the swooping letters of the fears of his soulmates.
Usually, Ben wears long sleeves or something else to hide them. You can see why now– there are many of them, many more than you, perhaps half a dozen in all. You can’t read all of them from where you’re standing, just snippets about how a villain’s kid shouldn’t have a soulmate, how they’ll never amount to much, things like that. Things like what you’ve been thinking recently.
Ben must catch on to your train of thought, because he smiles weakly, absentmindedly scratching at a sentence proclaiming that his soulmate isn’t worth the good luck they get. “Yeah, my soulmate’s a little stressed, I guess. Hopefully, I can talk about that with them soon. I want them to know that they’re worth it, wherever they are.”
It had never occurred to you that hating yourself would make your soulmate this obsessed. You have no proof that Ben is your soulmate but–
But, as you watch, you can see a new fear appearing out of nowhere, wrapping itself around Ben’s left wrist. I’m not good enough for a soulmate this good. Just what you were thinking mere moments ago. It’s like proof.
Ben looks up slowly, and although you were never blessed with the ability to read minds, you swear you can tell exactly what he’s thinking right now. “Are you–” he starts, ends, tries again, “Do you know who your soulmate is?”
You can do several things at this moment. You can confirm what you’re mostly sure is true, you can lie, you can pretend you hadn’t heard him. You spot movement in the trees behind him, a flash of purple, and remember belatedly that Mal is still somewhere at the Enchanted Lake, waiting for Ben to come back and wondering why you’re holding him here for so long.
All of a sudden, the reality of the situation comes crashing down around your shoulders. This is not something that can happen. Ben is a prince. You are the child of a villain, and the friend of another VK who’s counting on you to continue fooling Ben so she can pursue her latest mad plan. There is no world in which this works out.
So, you force a smile, banishing all thoughts back into the deep recesses of your brain once more. “No,” you say, “I don’t know. I think they’re a VK, though.”
Ben’s face falls in a flash. “Really? Because I thought–”
You shake your head quickly. “I don’t– it’s not me. I think Mal is waiting for you, though. You shouldn’t keep her for long.”
Ben glances back over his shoulder in memory of the girl he’s left somewhere in the woods behind him, and when he looks back, you’re gone. You’re good at running. It’s a skill you’ve perfected over the years. You just never thought you’d have to use it now.
Prince Ben is your soulmate. Impossible. True. Mal comes back later that afternoon, tells you the date went splendidly despite your accidental intrusion. Ben must not have let the brief moment in the woods faze him for long. It hurts more than you care to admit.
There is only so much running a VK can do, try as they might to pretend otherwise. You avoid Ben at all costs, hoping that whatever foolish war is currently being fought inside your heart will come to a tolerable ceasefire if you just ignore it long enough. Mal tells you that the plan is going swimmingly, she’s never seen the prince more excited about the VKs and the upcoming coronation. You nod and smile and tell her that you’re glad everything is going to plan, but inside, you cannot seem to stop your mind from screaming.
And then, all of a sudden, despite your best attempts to remain out of sight, Prince Ben finds you. It’s completely out of the blue, so casual that you almost don’t realize it’s happening until he’s sitting down at your table in the library and it’s too late to run.
You feel like an animal caught in a trap. He’s just smiling like nothing is the matter. “I know it’s you,” he says by way of hello.
Your heart is stuck in your throat. “What?”
“I know it’s you,” Ben repeats, “I know you’re my soulmate. I had the Fairy Godmother do a little spell so I could check for you, but I think I knew since that day at the lake.”
You frown. “You can do that?”
He shrugs, looking a little embarrassed. “Not everyone can, I think. But I, uh, insisted.”
You grin. “Prince privileges?”
“Something like that.” He’s smiling, though, maybe pleased that you’re not trying to run off this time. “But you knew even without the spell, didn’t you?”
That does shake your uncertain sense of calm. “Yes,” you admit, “but I didn’t think you— I didn’t think it would work out.”
The look on Ben’s face is genuinely heartbreaking. “What, just because I’m a prince?”
He says it so casually, it’s almost funny. “Yes, Ben, because you’re a prince and I’m a VK. I mean, my dad was Lefou. He literally tried to ruin the happy ever after of your parents, why would you want someone like me to be your soulmate?”
“Same reason you shouldn’t be afraid to want me. You’re not your father, Y/N, and I’m not my parents. We’re just us, and I know that I want you to be my soulmate. I have since the start. I was hoping you would tell me you knew, but after a few days went by and you still said nothing, I figured I had to take matters into my own hands. Even if that meant using a spell or two.”
You keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, for him to laugh in your face and tell you it’s ridiculous to think that he would ever want a VK as a soulmate, but he doesn’t. In fact, you don’t think he ever will. As impossible as it seems, Ben wants someone who isn’t from a perfect fairy tale. He wants you. And that, lovely and wonderful and absolutely crazy, sounds like a fairly good happily ever after for you.

Q1. What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?)
7. Any worldbuilding you’re particularly proud of?
49. What are you currently working on? Share a few lines if you’re up for it!
I'd recommend them The Past-Reading Isle of the Lost because of the core 4's backstories.
Worldbuilding? Um well I'm kinda proud how I fix the loopholes in Descendants.
I'm working on chapter 15 of The Past-Reading Isle of the Lost: "Oh boy…” Ben’s trailed off as he sunk into his bean bag. He knew very well where this meeting was going and he wished he didn’t want to remember it.
And chapter 3 of Auradon's Future( a collection of post D2 and D3 oneshots): “I want to build my career here in Auradon like how there’s more resources and better equipment. But I don’t know where it start…” Diego slumped, pouting slightly.

First Line Game
Thank you @jmrothwell and @legolasghosty for the tags!!!
rules: post the first lines of your last 10 fics posted to ao3. if you have less than 10 fics posted, post the first lines of all your fics.
If he’s being totally honest, Jay isn’t 100 percent sure how he ended up here.
From my first Descendants fic, I'd Give My Whole Kingdom For Just One Kiss! In which Jay is asexual and doesn't know how to tell Ben that for all his flirting, he doesn't actually want sex.
2. If there’s one ability Ray Molina has developed in the past two years— besides an exceptional tolerance for just rolling with the punches— it’s the ability to sense when there’s ghosts around.
From the latest It's Not Sunset Cis Either installment Your Dad Looks GNC AF (You're Insane) in which Ray and Reggie go skirt shopping and Ray discovers a little bit about his own gender identity.
3. Willie looks up from his book with a grin as he hears the sound of footsteps shuffling towards the bedroom.
From Almost Cut My Hair, a lil Luke/Willie oneshot in which they are t4t, ace4ace, and autistic4autistic <3
4. Flynn has just flopped down onto her bed, ready to go to sleep early and put the whole shitty day behind her, when her Mom calls up, “Flynn, Alex is here!”
From If Somebody Hurts You, I'm Gonna Get Hurt Too, a Not Sunset Cis fic about Alex and Flynn being petty besties and getting revenge on a shitty teacher <3
5. Bobby doesn’t actually think this is going to work, but he’s not above admitting that he’s desperate.
From my 2022 Big Bang fic Maybe the Real Seance Was the Friends We Made Along the Way in which Bobby attempts a seance to summon the boys, but accidentally summons Willie instead.
6. In Reggie’s defense, he was left unsupervised.
From Take my Anxiety and my Sobriety, in which Reggie gets drunk and kisses Alex's boyfriend. Then, to be fair, he kisses Alex too.
7. Willie’s keeping a secret from Alex.
From We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off, the Not Sunset Cis fic in which Willie comes out to Alex as asexual.
8. “Carlos, come on!” Willie calls. “I wanna skate around before Triple Threat’s time slot.”
From Playing Guitar on the Front Porch, the second fic in my Molina-Wilson-Covington verse in which Willie crashes into a car while skateboarding and somehow ends up with four boyfriends.
9. Willie really hates thunderstorms on a good day.
From the first fic in the Molina-Wilson-Covington verse, Feel My Chest Beating Like Thunder, in which Willie hates thunderstorms and Ray and Trevor are really good dads.
10. Sleepovers at Robbie’s house are Alex’s favorite things in the world.
From the Not Sunset Cis fic I Will Follow You Into the Sea of Eternity, aka 4 times Alex and Willie's lives intersect without realizing it, and 1 time they meet for real.

@borhapgirlforlife19 asked: Can I request a fluffy Joe Mazzello x fem. reader oneshot where Joe and reader take their 1 year old daughter to an amusement park and Joe goes on the kid rides with his daughter while reader watches with a big smile and takes lots of pictures and videos of them and while watching her little family, reader remembers how she met Joe in college and it was love at first sight?
First off, yes! I can absolutely do that! And second, I want to apologize for how delayed I am in getting the rest of your requests done. I just want to thank you so much for sticking with me this far and for continuing to request. It means the absolute world to me. So thank you 🥰🥰 Anyway, onto the request!

Love at First Sight: Joe Mazzello x Fem! Reader; Feat. OC Daughter

//[C/C] = Career Choice
~~~~
“Wow! Look at those ones, Jess!” Joe Mazzello said in aw, holding his one year old daughter, Jessie Virginia Mazzello in his arms. The toddler giggled and cooed, clapping and pointing up at the rollercoasters that rode up the tracks at a steep incline, then descended with the joyful yet terrified screams of the people riding it. You giggled lightly, standing next to your husband and daughter.
“I do think that one may be a little too big and scary for Jessie, though.” You said, smiling at Joe. Joe looked at you, smiling. He then nodded.
“Yeah, exactly what I was thinking,” he looked over at the one year old, who was currently sucking on her thumb, looking around in innocent curiosity. Joe smiled and kissed her head. “Don’t worry, Jessie. When you’re older, probably about, hmm, 13, maybe 14, I’ll bring you back here. Then you and I can ride that roller coaster together!” Joe said, blowing a raspberry on her cheek. Jessie squealed and laughed, pressing her hands against Joe’s cheeks.
“Da!” She shouted happily. Jessie was just barley learning to speak. Her first work, much to your disappoint, was Da-Da. She definitely was a daddy’s girl. You smiled at the interaction. You leaned over and pressed a kiss against full head of brown, shoulder length locks. Jessie turned in her dad’s arms and smiled at you. She pressed her tiny hand against your cheek. “Da-Da!” She shouted. You pouted, while Joe tried his best to stifle his laughter. You were still working on trying to get Jessie to say Mama. You pressed your hand gently over her’s.
“Ma-ma,” you said each syllable carefully, trying to get Jessie to catch on. Seriously! She even has nicknames for Ben, Rami, Lucy, and, thankfully not Gwilym, yet. You looked at your husband. “Well, until she reaches the age of 13 or 14, which hopefully won’t be for a while, I suggest we stick close to the child friendly rides.” You said. Joe smiled and pressed a gentle kiss to your head.
“I think that’s a wonderful idea, babe. What do you think, Jess? That sound good to you?” Joe asked. Jessie just started babbling nonsense and clapping her hands together, laughing. You chuckled and shrugged at your husband.
“I take that as a yes.” You said, causing the two of you to laugh.
~~~
You giggled and waved your hand at your husband and daughter, who were currently going round and around on the carousel. Joe and Jessie were sitting in one of the benches, in front of another young couple and their eleven year old. Joe was sitting close to Jessie, making sure the ride wasn’t too much for her. But Jessie was all smiles! Laughing and clapping her hands, watching as the horses, lions, and other creatures spun and went up and down around them. You took a few good photos of both Joe and Jessie looking at you and smiling. Until Jessie went back into her own little world, that is.
You smiled softly, thinking about the first time you met Joe.
~Flashback~
It was your Sophomore year of College. You were studying [C/C]. You walked into class, brushing your [h/l] [h/c] behind your ears, holding your required textbooks in your arms. You looked at the assigned seating posted on the whiteboard. You were to sit next to someone named Joe Mazzello. Interesting name. You couldn’t help but feel like you had heard it somewhere, like the name should be familiar to you somehow. You walked over to the third row from the floor seats, sitting in the middle. The seat next to you was surprisingly empty. Just as the final bell to get to class rang, a body rushed into the classroom just as Professor Callahan was about to start his lesson. He looked over his glasses at Joe with a disapproving look.
“Nearly late again, Mr. Mazzello.” Professor Callahan said. Joe was breathing heavily, a smile on his face.
“Nearly, Professor Callahan. But, I wasn’t late.” He said. Professor Callahan nodded, no amusement on his older face.
“Yes,” he said. He then pointed a ruler at you. “Your assigned seat for this year is in the third from the bottom, middle row. Right next to Miss. [L/N]. [L/N], please raise your hand!” Professor Callahan requested. You did as asked, raising your hand high in the air for Joe to see. Nodding, and smiling even more, Joe made his way over to the third row, sitting next down next to you. With everyone there, Professor Callahan began his lesson for the day. While taking notes, Joe glanced at you.
“Hi, I’m Joe, Joe Mazzello.” He whispered, holding out his hand. You set down your pencil and smiled at him, taking his hand and shaking it in greeting.
“Nice to meet you, Joe. I’m [Y/N], [Y/N] [L/N].” You whispered back, introducing yourself. Your eyes then widened as it dawned on you. This wasn’t any ordinary Joe Mazzello. This was the Joe Mazzello! The child actor from Jurassic Park! “Wait, y-you’re Joe Mazzello!” You whisper shouted. “The Joe Mazzello from the Jurassic Park movie!” You whispered again. Joe chuckled and nodded.
“The one and only,” He said, flashing you a kind smile. God. That smile. That was what had set it in stone. This was what Love at First Sight must be like.
~~~
“Hey, babe, you okay?”
You started a bit, being brought back from your trip down Memory Lane. You looked at Joe and Jessie, not realizing that the ride had ended already. You smiled at Joe and pressed a kiss to his lips. You pulled back, smiling.
“I’m just fine, Joe. I was just thinking back to when we first met. To when I realized that I had experienced Love at First Sight.” You said, smiling at Joe. Joe smiled sweetly at you, pressing a kiss to your head. Then, something amazing happened.
“M-Mama!” Jessie shouted. Joe pulled away from the kiss to your head in shock and happiness. Your mouth dropped in shock as well as happiness. You took your daughter from your husband’s arms, holding her gently yet close to you, smiling. Jessie giggled as you pressed kisses to her cheeks, her forehead and her cheeks again. You chuckled and held your daughter against your hip. You pumped your free hand into the air.
“Yes! Finally! Take that, Gwilym! He owes twenty bucks now!” You said cheekily. You and Gwilym had bet on which word Jessie would say first, a nickname for Gwilym, or Mama. And you had won the bet. Then, Jessie whined and made grabby hands at Joe. You sighed and rolled your eyes playfully, handing Jessie over to Joe. Jessie then yawned and rested her head against her dad’s shoulder, struggling to keep her eyes open. Joe chuckled and pressed a gentle kiss to Jessie’s head.
“I think that’s enough excitement for our little Jess for one day.” Joe said, holding out his hand to you. Just like that day in your college class, you took Joe’s hand without hesitation. Yes. That day had truly, been Love at First Sight.
Where do you post your fanfiction and is it under the same name?
If you're asking in regards to The Christmas Fic™, that'll be on ao3 whenever it's finished. I use nearly the same name as on here, but with an underscore instead of a dash. Here's the link if you're interested, there's only a oneshot up for now but it's about my beloved Huma so. I also have two more oneshots/mini fics/I'm not entirely sure what they'll end up being that I plan to finish after the Christmas thing. One about Carlos meeting his cousins Ivy and Diego for the first time and one about how all of the Madrigals got their gifts in Encanto. Eventually I plan to do a rewrite of Ben and Mal's wedding as well as something for Mal's bachelorette party, but I haven't started those yet so don't expect them any time soon.
I also have other Descendants works on Quotev, under the name QueenofSparkles. They're not the best but two of them are actually finished so if you want to read them, I'd encourage you to start with them! And here's a link to all of those.
I'm back<33
I'm at a slump with the flynn fanfic, I was close to the end of it before i realized i did the plot wrong so I'm gonna either restart or try and change it a bit to fit the plot requested.
I also have this request which is still on my to start list, No guess of when it will be done, Im sorry i have never watched the movie he is from so i'm currently trying to watch it so i can get a good idea of what he is like, Though i probably wont do a fic/oneshot but i will defiantly try to do head cannons and maybe a drabble.
Tumblr media
I also have a descendants request of a ben x reader x Jay, Its kinda like the flynn request, Its not in the works yet but its also on my to do! I'm also supper excited about it :)
I'm so tempted to write my Descendants AU Oneshot idea where Uma and Mal are the couple (simply because they’re the hottest characters) and the core four went to Auradon with their own ambitions; to bring all the isle kids back to Auradon. Mal is actually just using her "relationship" with Ben to get what she wants because Ben is weak willed and inefficient and really just a puppy dog that needs someone to tell him what to do (while still letting him think he's in control).
And in the shot Mal goes back to the isle to apologize to Uma and bring her back to Auradon so they can scheme together and achieve their dream of bringing the isle kids over and toppling the monarchy.
Note: Reposting this due to a Tumblr glitch that messed up the original ask. :’)
@bunny-lou <3 ALWAYS. Thank you for asking, because it sparked a fun idea, so I hope by “more Carlos,” you meant roughly 2K Carlos-centric Rotten OT4 Halloween fluff ft. minor angst for maximum fluff potential.
Here’s the short version of the headcanon: Carlos has his very own personal chocolate fondue fountain in his and Jay’s dorm room. But why? I mean, he could have bought it at Kmart probably, but I have a more interesting tale…
You want the full 2K context I accidentally wrote because I have zero chill? God, I hope so, ‘cause here it comes. (TW: Very mild ref. to claustrophobia; it’s just one sentence, which occurs after the sentence that mentions the “sixth room” if you’d like to skip it. Also, gently narrated occurrence of a panic attack.)
The AKs make a point of hyping Halloween for the VKs when they first get to Auradon. Carlos and Evie are the most genuinely excited about it; for Carlos, it’s about the promised mountains of chocolate and other sweets he’s yet to try. All for free? Sign him the heck up. (Evie, of course, is all about the costumes, while Jay and Mal are most interested in the mischief they’ll be allowed—nay, socially obligated—to subject the AKs to on that most wonderful day of the year.)
When October comes around, the VKs learn about the annual Auradon Prep “costume awards.” Apparently, most of the kids take the competition pretty seriously. “Anyone who’s anyone,” the way Audrey tells it, “knows to keep their costume a secret until the 31st.” Some people go so far as to spread rumours about their own costume plans as red herrings to distract their competitors. (To win at this whole thing is basically on par with being crowned at prom.)
Evie gets real into it and starts in early on the designs for the Core Four. She goes for a theme, assuming the four of them will be spending the whole night together. That’s the plan, anyway. Carlos is practically vibrating with excitement as he watches it all unfold. Jay’s pretty sure he can expect to end up carrying Carlos, along with several bags full of candy, back to the dorm room on the big night (though Carlos insists he’s gonna stay caffeinated until the bitter end).
And then, FINALLY, it’s Halloween…
As soon as the last bell rings, everyone is rushing to get ready for the night.
The Core Four head out in their costumes at sunset. Evie’s work really shines, and she’s stopped by several people asking if they can pay her to make their costumes for next year. Carlos is just plain hyped on coffee and he’s single-mindedly like, “Chocolate chocolate chocolate,” so they all hurry along…
Most of the students trick-or-treat in the wealthy neighbourhoods within walking distance of campus. They notice one particular house on the corner attracting a large crowd, and they gather from strands of conversation that whoever owns the place turns part of the property into a haunted house attraction every year. Anyone who comes out the other end is loaded with candy. Not the cheap stuff, either. It’s stuff like full-sized Snickers bars and chocolate-dipped apples.
Carlos leads the charge, basically dragging Jay by the hand (he’s loathe to admit it, but he’s not a big fan of ghosts, whereas Carlos is so utterly married to science that Mal regularly has to clamp his mouth shut during horror movies so he’ll shut up and stop “debunking” the big paranormal reveal).
Anyway, all they’re told at the door is that the haunted house is themed by room and uniquely planned each year, so they should refrain from talking about the layout once they’re through lest they spoil it for someone who hasn’t gone yet.
Again, Carlos is just like, “Yeah, that’s nice, now let’s get me some chocolate!”
The first room is tame, as you’d expect. It’s pretty tacky. Even Jay looks bored when a sheet ghost smacks him in the face with a weak mechanical, “Boo!”
The second room is a little more atmospheric, but for the VKs, it just looks like a street on the Isle if it’d been subject to some litter clean-up and renovation…
The third room has the first live actors. Mal has a sneaking suspicion they’ve taken inspiration from her mother’s story, but it’s pretty lame as far as she’s concerned. She just waves the others off when they glance at her over it.
It’s the sixth room that’s the problem. They walk out of a claustrophobic black tunnel where the inflatable walls press in on you and straight into what you might imagine the result of a butcher setting up shop in Hell Hall would look like. Worse, it’s no accident. There’s a live actress playing one Cruella De Vil.
Carlos freezes at the sight of it all. He stops smiling for the first time that night.
The others move on instinct. No need to talk it through. Jay steps in front of Carlos, holding him against his chest and rubbing his back, glaring at anyone who complains about the fact that they’ve stopped in the middle of the path.
Meanwhile, Mal grabs the first plastic butcher’s knife she sees between her and the actress who’s about to get an earful. Evie takes a tight hold of her arm before she can point it at the actor’s throat, but Mal still hisses at the woman that she needs to leave. Now. The woman stays in character for about 5 seconds before she realizes Mal isn’t kidding. She runs off so fast, her wig falls off. Evie kicks it under a table for good measure before they go back to where they left Carlos and Jay, who haven’t moved from their position.
Mal, Evie, and Jay agree with a single look that they’ve seen enough of this so-called holiday. Carlos isn’t one to cry, but they know a panic attack when they see one, and his shaking is worse for the fact that he’s had so much coffee.
Before they go, Evie pulls off the hooded cape she’d designed for herself and puts it on Carlos. It’s a little big for him, but it’s warm and comforting with the scent of her favourite perfume having soaked into the fuzzy lining.
Jay keeps an arm around Carlos’ shoulders as they head out, with Mal and Evie taking the lead, shouldering people out of the way where necessary. When they get outside, they’re not surprised to see that, as the crowd has thickened, more offensive costumes have appeared in the mix. Maybe they just hadn’t noticed them before, with all the excitement, but it’s all they can see now—many terrible faces from the Isle that aren’t quite how they remember them.
Mal sees “Jafar” in the crowd with a shitty homemade golden cobra staff. She grabs it before Evie can stop her, looks “Jafar” dead in the eye, and snaps it over her knee. She also manages to knock a crown off an “Evil Queen’s” head on their way back to campus. Evie ends up returning that favour by pretending to stumble in her heels, accidentally hip-checking “Maleficent” into a pond. The girl’s screeching and splashing draw enough eyes to her that no one seems to notice when Mal tugs Evie away from the scene to catch up with Carlos and Jay, who’d kept their previous pace (determined not to stop until he’d gotten Carlos into their dorm room and away from all the Auradonian bullshit).
At last, they get to the boys’ dorm. It’s very quiet in the hall with everyone out to party by that point. Carlos, besides being extremely jittery, doesn’t look like a boy who drank way too much caffeine in anticipation of gathering mounds of chocolate. He doesn’t talk, just indicates that he wants to go to sleep, even though it’s still pretty early in the evening. Jay and Evie help him out of his costume and into his pyjamas, then cuddle into bed on other side of him.
Evie notices Mal pacing and frowning at her phone. She gives her a questioning look, but Mal just shakes her head and gestures that she needs a minute. She steps into the bathroom, turns the fan on high, and has a very loud, muffled phone conversation that ends with her turning the fan off, opening the door, stripping part of her costume off, and promptly worming her way into the cuddle pile without a word about it.
They fall asleep like that.
In the morning, Carlos has recovered from his panic attack, except for that he feels incredibly guilty for having “ruined the night” for them all. The others are quick to assure him it’s not his fault the Auradonians are “such complete assholes” (as Mal succinctly puts it). They feel tricked, but they figure that’s all in the spirit of the holiday. It was never meant for them to enjoy, apparently.
Someone knocks at the door. They don’t answer, but Ben only gives it a minute before he unlocks it with a master key and enters with one hand over his eye, asking sheepishly if everyone’s decent. (Mal throws her bra at him in spite.)
Ben wastes no time in launching into an apology, explaining that it wasn’t until Mal called to yell at him last night that he’d thought about how the VKs might be affected by the long-standing AK tradition of dressing up as famous villains, especially those who featured in their parents’ stories or elsewhere in their heritage. It’s such an ingrained part of their culture in Auradon, to “laugh in the face of evil.” Quite literally. It’s a way of celebrating the safety and security that the barrier’s provided their nation with, etc, etc…
(The VKs just kinda stare at him throughout this awkward, rambling speech.)
Finally, Ben sighs and gestures for someone out in the hall. Jane enters first, followed by Lonnie, then Doug, and even a reluctant Chad and Audrey. They all have massive bags of candy, which they pretty much dump out like an offering in the middle of the dorm room. It’s so much chocolate to behold that Carlos can’t help sitting a little straighter. His eyes are glued to the mound of sugar.
Ben sheepishly explains that he and the others felt awful about the fact that the VKs hadn’t been able to enjoy the night, so they felt it was the least they could do to gather up some treats to make it up for them. (Mal gets in here that it’s “definitely the least you could do.”)
Agreeing whole-heartedly, Ben promises to push for a more inclusive holiday as soon as the crown passes to him, which will occur before Halloween next year. He sees the VKs looking skeptical, so he gets a little dramatic about it and gets down on one knee with his hand over his heart, like, “I swear, as future king of this nation…” And Jay just laughs and he’s like, “Okay, okay, we believe you. You don’t have to propose to us or whatever.” (Lonnie snorts at that and Jane giggles, leaving Ben very red-faced indeed as he tries to compose himself.)
Ben hesitates and then gestures for one more person to enter the dorm room. Lumiere enters, huffing and puffing, with a sizeable box he’s obviously been holding for a while, and passes it to Ben, who thanks him and takes it over to the VKs. He presents the box, which is wrapped in pumpkin-patterned paper, to Carlos specifically, and tells him that it’s a special apology from Ben, personally.
Ben doesn’t wait to see him open it, though. He waves and herds the other AKs out, though they quietly protest (very much wanting to be nosy about the gift).
Carlos just kinda looks at Mal like, “Do you think it’ll explode if we open it?”
Jay rolls his eyes, picks the box up, and starts shaking it. He judges it safe from that obviously very scientific test, and Mal just shrugs and tells Carlos to go ahead, so he starts to peel back the paper and ends up unpacking… all of this:
[IMG ID: A Halloween-themed chocolate fondue set, complete with snacks.]
And that is the story of how Carlos got his own personal chocolate fondue fountain, as well as the story of how the new Halloween tradition became for the King himself to set up a “haunted castle” attraction, which he organized with the help of a certain small council of VKs, who then took up the role of live actors (paid handsomely in chocolate and other sweets) so they could finally take their “revenge” on Auradon… by scaring the ever-loving shit out of AKs.
The end. ;)
If there are any typos or plot holes, you can blame the fact that I wrote this at lightning speed without taking a single moment to edit so I am sorry haha.
