One day while shooting a journal in the Brooklyn area, amateur moviemaker () happened upon something in his film that he described as “bone-chilling”. In a window from one of his shots of the old Joey Drew Studio, he found a face staring back.

Despite it being a clear fake, something about the photo put a new fear into the people who saw it, even more when it showed up unprompted in magazines. It seemed that this peculiar prank had reawoken the scare Bendy gave the public two decades before.

“I didn’t know much about Bendy, only that it was silly cartoons my parents watched,” () is reported saying. “But believe me when I tell you, that face I saw, it’s stuck to my mind like glue ever since. All these old memories are coming back. I could never come up with a prank as bizarre as that.”

Unbeknownst to most, Joey Drew Studios has always had its fair share of “ghost stories”. From phantoms on-strike to children who have never heard of Bendy drawing him around themselves, it’s had an aire to it that ignites people’s nightmares.

Week 1 Disrupt: 12/10/23

I am interested in the use of corsets to disrupt and modify one’s natural figure, so I started looking on Pinterest and google, searching artists who use such props in their own works. I found some very interesting photographs!

How interesting and harrowing to see how one training their body with a laced up corset can affect their bone structure…

This is Michaela Stark, who creates ‘bodies’ of work using lingerie on herself and others to contort, disfigure and sculpt, displaying body parts people have been conditioned to hide away from the world…

I find these images so interesting in the way that things are wrapped around body parts to create sections of flesh that bulge and protrude in different directions!

I then stumbled upon this photographer while looking on Pinterest:

John Rankin Waddell: Photographer

Using a similar technique to Stark, we see rubber bands around the head, creating an effect of bulging flesh & skin…

I scrolled to similar works and found this picture

AA Bronson: Photographer

and searched him and found another of his works, again creating a similar effect to both the previous mentioned artists/photographers.

I think this is a great start to my research of “disrupt” encapsulating the world of body dysmorphia and “perfect body standards” and utter distortion of the natural human form.

Monster

“Why aren’t you looking?” Adam asks incredulously. His posture shifts from excitement to curiousity. “Why?”

Evan no longer has the nerves to speak. Flattened against the wall in fear, he glances in every direction but in front of him, where his companion stands.

Except, it wasn’t really his companion anymore. Once a friend, the thing in front of him was unrecognizable as human. Flesh ripped from muscle, nails torn from bleeding fingers, knotted hair falling out in clumps.

Evan didn’t even know what it was anymore.

Adam crouches down next to him, and they look at the monster together.

Neither of them speak. Then, Adam reaches out and touches the monster’s stomach. Evan feels it on his own abdomen.

Terrified eyes slowly drag their way down, until he can see Adam’s finger tugging loosely on bloodied skin, tearing away from his own torso.

Transfixed, Evan doesn’t move. His mind won’t accept this, it won’t. What happened to his friend? Why was he wearing the monster’s body? Why can he feel it?

Adam chuckles. “You’re having a hard time with this, which is cute, admittedly, but a little annoying.”

Evan doesn’t move. He can’t. His back is flush against the wall, and only now can he feel stinging from the torn skin rubbing against the brick behind him. No…

“Oh yes,” Adam grins. “Let’s do a long-awaited reveal, shall we? I worked hard on you, you know.”

He reaches and taps the mirror standing in front of them, and the monster’s image shakes from the touch. Slowly tilting it upwards, Evan can almost recognize the face staring him down.

He almost… it kind of… reminds him of… his own.

“Oh my god,” Evan whispers. This can’t be happening.

Adam laughs loud and stands back up, eye to eye with Evan’s wild, panicked eyes filled with horror, soaking in the emotion.

“There it is.”

Do any other millennials out there remember the trend in media in the 90′s and early 00′s where any time the news or a documentary was talking about fat people they’d include b roll that was just repeated videos of fat people existing in public? But they’d specifically shoot them from the neck down so that a) they didn’t need to get consent and b) so that they could dehumanize them. It’s easier to look at someone’s body and say GROSS when you can’t see their face, when they’re not a real person who’s just crossing the street or going about their life. 

And this wasn’t just raunchy reality tv like The Biggest Loser. The 00′s obsession with “heroin chic” and eating disorders meant that the topic of “obesity” was a constant topic on the news and this style of filming/editing even made its way into content like documentaries which were supposed to just focus on educational content. It was inescapable at the time. idk man, growing up surrounded by media that made it very clear that people who looked like you had an inherent moral flaw and deserved to be publicly mocked and degraded couldn’t have been good for us.
