Dove Self-Esteem Project X Steven Universe Video Celebrates Non-Binary and Intersex Character
In a video uploaded to Cartoon Network’s YouTube account on Jun 24, 2019, the character Stevonnie celebrated their identity as an intersex and non-binary person.
In the video Stevonnie, a fusion between the title character Steven and his friend Connie, talks about positivity in social media. During this speech, Stevonnie shows of their social media feed (modeled after Instagram). Their profile is clearly displayed reading “I am an experience. Intersex, non-binary, they/them.”
The video then goes on to show the feed of Stevonnie, which includes the non-binary pride flag with the caption “WE DESERVE TO SHINE” and a picture celebrating Intersex Awareness Day (October 26th) captioned “intersex rights are human rights.”
While Stevonnie’s identity as non-binary and intersex has never been hidden on Steven universe it is great to see that identity celebrated alongside a positive message and thoughtful message about social media in this PSA.
