Lake Haiyaha and Dream Lake from our hike yesterday. It was a beautiful day out in the mountains. A little windy, but it was sunny with temperatures in the low 40s, so I was really comfortable in my hiking shirt and flannel the whole time.
At some point during the hike, though, my husband backed up into a tree and got sap all over his pack and the hat hanging on the back of it. 😩 So I spent a good half hour after we got home scrubbing and blotting at both with isopropyl.
I'm pretty certain it was our favorite tree on the hike, right near Lake Haiyaha, that he backed into. I believe it's a limber pine, and it's unfathomably ancient looking, and likely centuries old — but potentially millennia old, as they can reach ages of 3,000 years. And it was just dripping pitch on one part.
These photos aren't all from yesterday, but this is one of the neatest trees I've seen in my entire life. It's incredibly beautiful, and in an incredibly beautiful place. The shape almost evokes bonsai, but it's enormous, and nobody has worked on it except for nature.
