Hi Naff!! I’m just curious, do you plan to write a full fic for your Naga AU, similar to Apex Polarity? Or are you thinking it’s just gonna stay a collection of snippets? I’m really excited for more either way, please don’t tell Sun and Moon but I think Eclipse’s chapter was my favorite xmsjdjd (a big fluffy vibrated weighted blanket just sounds too perfect 😔). Also I’m dying to find out who this other 4th contender is that was mentioned- or maybe they’re not a contender at all and just act as an actual threat that the boys will need to team up against? Either way I am loving this universe and can’t wait to see more built and more banter to go with it :)))

I can't say when I will write it but I want to! I have a loose plot figured out with bigger things waiting to be explored (as hinted to in the ficlet) so, I can't say when for sure, but in the future! I still need to wrap up AP and then take a little interlude just to give myself a breather before rushing into another big fic.

Fox Spirit

In ancient China, the most widely known of the seductive spirits were the "Fox Spirits" who were believed to live high in the misty mountains. The Fox Spirits could take on a human form by transforming themselves through the aid of human bones (especially the skull). Foxes are associated with Yin and the Earth Element. They are associated with deceit, trickery, slyness, cunning, and craftiness. Documents dating back to the dawn of China's civilization identify the fox as a demonic creature, upon whose back spirit entities often ride. According to the famous Daoist scholar Ji Yun:

"Humans and things are different species, and foxes lie in-between humans and things; darkness and light take different paths, and foxes lie in-between darkness and light; gods and demons follow different ways; and foxes lie in-between gods and demons."

Both anthropologists and historians have emphasized the significance of the betwixt and between for the study of culture. Mary Douglas, for example, gives special importance to boundary-crossing animals and spirits in assuring social and moral order. She argues that in a given society, what is perceived to be ambiguous and marginal tends to be regarded as ritually unclean, hence defiling established principles. The marginality of such beings discharges both danger and power to the dominant patterns of the existing social structure. Victor Turner further elaborates the symbolism of marginality and ritual. He contends that rituals are organized around certain key symbols that simultaneously encompass many different meanings. Only by relating the ritual symbols to social experience can one decipher their multivocality. Turner also develops the concept of liminality:

"Liminal entities are neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between the positions assigned and arrayed by law, custom, convention, and ceremonial. As such, their ambiguous and indeterminate attributes are expressed by a rich variety of symbols in the many societies that ritualize social and cultural transitions. Thus, liminality is frequently likened to death, to being in the womb, to invisibility, to darkness, to bisexuality, to the wilderness, and to an eclipse of the sun or moon."

In other words, the betwixt and between represents a liminal phase, an ambiguous and paradoxical stage of being neither this nor that—or being both. It is a ritual stage that allows people to change from one state to another, and thereby to reorder the world and to gain new power to deal with life. Liminal situations and roles tend to be conceived as “dangerous, inauspicious, or polluting to persons, objects, events, and relationships that have not been incorporated into the liminal context.” In popular culture and folk literature, they are likened to marginal groups, such as shamans, mediums, magicians, and jesters, who usually come from the bottom of society yet are endowed with the ritual power of the weak to reverse established social structures and express cultural oppositions.

An encounter with a Fox Spirit could either be considered positive or deadly, depending on the type of interaction, and temperament of the spirit entity. For example, the victim could end up either having intercourse with a demonic vampire, or having a romantic interlude that ended up in marriage. Because Fox Spirits could either appear as men or women, and transform themselves into the images of individuals who are sometimes young or old, each interaction was uncertain. Historically, Fox Spirits could sometimes act like malevolent ghosts, haunting and bewitching people, causing sickness and even death. Other times, they could assume the positive role of a benevolent loving spouse, or act live a compassionate Ancestral Spirit, granting an individual health, wealth, and fame. Therefore, in relationship to humans, an interaction with a Fox Spirit could either be benevolent or vindictive, according to the treatment that the fox received. For example, one of the positive attributes associated with magical Fox Spirits, is that they retain the knowledge of hidden or buried treasure. They could either use these riches for their own personal gain, or they could reveal these treasures to their human friends.

The Fox Spirit does not have the power to change its tail. This often leads to its discovery. An ancient saying states:

"Talk of demons and they will appear; talk of a Fox Spirit and his tail will be seen."

This project has been in the works for I think 2 weeks now. Might as well show everyone! This is a project for fun, I hope this idea will spring into a reality someday.

How much trouble can little Mercury get into, over the course of a mere 19 days? Plenty. Both Saturdays of this transit are tense and argumentative, although everything starts out well - and perhaps ends well, too.

Learning - if something piques our interest, we’ll be doing a very deep dive into it. We’re especially intrigued by “taboo” subjects, or anything we consider mysterious and dark. Not always the best listener in the world, but we easily pick up on what people aren’t saying.

Thinking and reasoning - we take a long time making up our minds, which is sometimes a good thing and sometimes not. Our emotions affect the process more than we’re usually willing to admit - and once we have made up our minds, we stick with that decision come hell or high water.

Communication - we can be painfully blunt, if we can be coaxed into speech in the first place. We don’t waste words - no florrid, polysyllabic orations for us.

So uh, first things first - there's your explanation for where TDTMD Act 2 Chapter 3 is. It'll come out some time in January unless some big autism moment like this happens again, sorry for the wait y'all!

Honestly, like I said in the video's description, I didn't plan for this to take all month - it was originally meant to be for Eclipse's birthday but. Delays happened.

But enough about the month gone past - or even the year gone past! I just KNOW you all wanna know what we have in store for 2024!

Firstly - TDTMD Act 2 Case 01 will still be coming out as it has been! Right now I have 5 planned chapters for Case 01 - and we're like, halfway there! Crazy, huh? But... What do I mean by "Case 01" anyway? Well, you see, TDTMD Act 2 is actually an anthology of sorts! A collection of stories that are all connected by the theme of the Black Arms' effect on PetalBloom - three stories to be exact! Each case is to have 5 chapters each, resulting in Act 2 as a whole having 15 chapters! Quite a lot! But worry not, those who are looking forward to things other than TDTMD, for I am not going to be writing all three cases back to back, no no!

After Case 01 is finished - I've scheduled myself to write a new side story - the FINAL side story for Arc 1! "But Ash, you finished Arc 1 like 2 years ago! Why are you still writing side stories attached to it?", well, mainly because my brain gets on my case about how the writing isn't as good as my newer stuff and how "unbalanced" Arc 1 and Arc 2 are in terms of content - so I'm doing this to make it shush. But also I saw potential still to be found within Arc 1's events, so, yeah! After this post goes up I'm gonna add the name of that side story to the pinned post for hype and all that :]

After THAT - I'm finally gonna go a bit into the catalogue of documented but not written Origins stories listed on the pinned post with The Englishman With The Devil's Eyes. I've been wanting to get to this one for a while now but stuff kept getting in between me and it. But no longer! For after the last Arc 1 side story, Devil's Eyes will finally have it's moment - no matter what! But... I know what you wanna hear...

New Main Stories?? - Yes yes, I hear you. Enough with the Origins and the side stories - when are we getting back to Arc 2 proper? Well aren't you in luck! Being preceded by a short side story oneshot, Mission: FOX FRENZY - the third main installment of Arc 2, will indeed be the next in line after Devil's Eyes! Not to spoil too much, but this one goes out to all you Garrick fans~! 🤭

Beyond That - I have a whole schedule planned that carries to the end of Arc 2 - both officially with the LONG awaited rewrite of Something to Bond Over, and spiritually with TDTMD Act 3 and more importantly, it's corresponding Moonlight Interlude. (what do I mean by that? You'll see~), but if I were to explain the whole of it now, why, this post would be like the new color of the sky! So I'll do it in increments~ All you need to know rn is that I plan to finish Arc 2 this year.

Lastly - The non fic stuff! The most important, I think, is the whole deal with CoC and it's cancellation. I won't go into the why of CoC being cancelled here - but rather, how it effects TEoS going forward. If you were unfamiliar, CoC was to be a webcomic that was a spinoff/crossover with TEoS. It was vaguely referenced in Innate Affiliation - meaning that it needs a replacement. That replacement is... kind of in the works as we speak - I plan to truly start remaking it into the role in February. All I'll say for now is that it's going to be another Sonic AU this time rather than an AU from another franchise. Other than that - I have a special YT video in mind to come out after the Arc 1 side story, won't say what it is yet but, I really hope you'll enjoy it - it's... gonna cost me a pretty penny. Also, this animatic (you forgot that this was the original point of the post, didn't you?) was made completely in Ibis - but after this I'm completely switching over to Clip Studio Paint! I've already been messing around with it since Xmas though - I'm very much willing to show what I've made with it so far! In fact, I think I'll do that on the main art blog later tonight!

Twilight

I am a fool for pining and the first book delivers. There's a delicious build-up of snarling, huffing and angst before the will they/won't they collides with lust, infatuation and then danger. I was FED. My paperback barely survived the rereads before I clung to the movie. Then I quickly replaced my hc's with each actor as they were announced and loved nearly everyone. The Cullens are a dream vampire family, their house and cars a shiny bonus. Plus baseball outfits. Iykyk. And yes, the soundtrack still fucking slaps. Supermassive 10/10. We'll always agree there.

Breaking Dawn

I wish I could break this in two. Wait, it's my review. I shall! The first: Breaking, the steamy slayyyy! The literal bed-breaking passionate destruction and oceanfront honeymoon bliss were a satisfying payoff for the build-up in Twilight. This is the fantastical, happily ever after shit my teenage brain craved. The pregnancy experience was about as much as I knew about pregnancy, so perfect level of detail. Bella has to become a vampire to save her family? So relatable. And Dawn: The dawning of a new era, where mother and child learn to love, where mother makes the noble sacrifice, where racing through the woods and hopping off tall trees is suburban bliss, where your friend and former love interest falls in fucking love with your kid. I stg, this was a true testament to my own new relationship. The man who stayed, who listened, who loved me and poured wine for me while I literally SCREAMED and SHOUTED at my teen rated book proved a level of devotion that neither Edward nor Jacob will ever be capable of. Still, I place the whole book at #2 because it conjured far more emotions than "UGH," unlike three and four.

But first, an interlude.

Midnight Sun

Edwards POV, my beloved. While Twilight + Breaking Dawn holds all my teenage dreams, this origin story companion is a fanfic indulgence I imagine Stefanie wrote simply to clear her comment box. "Could a dead, frozen heart beat again? It felt as though mine were about to." It's satisfying because Edward made me swoon but not particularly insightful, unless you're in the market for a little Volvo coupe. The car and driver edition of the series, if you will.

New Moon

My boy drives away, sob! Edward peels out of snowy Forks in a cloud of angst, flinching jaw muscles and puppy-dog eyes in the best interest of his clumsy DANGER MAGNET. He's so dreamy! She's so dumb! I'm so sad! Sweet, furry Jacob lights up our world with his bronzed glow and motorcycle tricks, but the infatuation is short-lived (sweet, attractive boy who only wants your happiness? ew.) because hallucinations of a cute, fanged control freak are better. Until he's slapped around by the Volturi. Love the Volturi though - the name, the aesthetic, the evil popeness vibe - good stuff. If only there were more Volturi and less woe.

Eclipse

Danger, Danger! Victoria wants to kill Bella and destroy the Cullens. But worse than that, Bella has to decide between Jacob and Edward. Is she IN LOVE or does she just like-like supernatural dudes who want to make her their property? Who loves her more? Is it like, too embarrassing to get married at graduation? Do I like have any friends? Like, oh my god, what should I do????? Is there anyone on earth with harder decisions to make? CRINGE. She's insufferable and I lost centimeters on my molars in the repeated gnash. The worst.

Lissa's not a soldier: most of her "combat" experience is hunting, but she's a skilled rider and an excellent shot. This may or may not help against the magma titan.

Okay so, while Lissa can almost definitely shoot a normal hunting bow, she's a) not a professional hunter, and b) for that and other reasons hasn't kept up training for like ten years, so she cannot just pick up a war longbow with double the draw weight of a hunting bow like "yeah this is fine." Also women with longbows is fucking overdone, yes I'm looking at you literally every piece of YA fantasy media since The Chronicles of Narnia.

This crossbow (which technically could be called an arbalest due to the steel laths, but those terms are basically interchangeable) is modeled after the rapid-fire crossbow designed by Leonardo da Vinci, which never caught on pretty much only because firearms were already eclipsing bow weapons at that point. This is Katolis, where by all rights they should already have firearms, so fuck the artbook, you don't need a windlass or some shit and it fires way faster than 2 bolts per minute.

Da Vinci's crossbow only has a draw weight of 300 pounds, which makes it probably on the low end of longbow power. (The physics of converting draw weight of a longbow or crossbow into arrow impact energy is actually super complicated, so you could have an 800+ pound crossbow with an arrow impact about the same as a 150-180 pound longbow, but it also doesn't require so much back strength that frequent use literally deforms your skeleton.) Windlass- or cranequin-loaded crossbows used on the battlefield frequently had several times that draw weight, like 1000+ pounds. With refinement, the Da Vinci design may have been able to increase the draw weight, but that didn't happen because, again, firearms.

Side note: it's apparently still hotly debated in the historical armaments community (which is as weird as you imagine) whether or not a bow of any kind could pierce armor. Best guess is that it depends greatly on both the quality and type of arrow and the quality of the armor (which varied a lot), so I'm grudgingly giving a pass to Ethari on designing a bow-and-arrow combo that can pierce straight through Harrow's presumably extremely high-quality breastplate.

Also if you want to google Da Vinci's crossbow design, make sure you specify the rapid fire one because he also designed a giant crossbow (as one does, naturally) and that's the one that has the most search results for some reason.
