Honestly, what I dislike most about FE3H is that it’s held up as some sort of gold standard for a series it does not represent well at all. It’s like it was made by people who read on Wikipedia what Fire Emblem is and then tried to make a Fire Emblem game.
Okay, but seriously, whatever you liked about Three Houses: I guarantee you there is another Fire Emblem game out there that does the same thing, and possibly better. Except for Edelgard, no Fire Emblem character’s potential was wasted as much as hers.

Blooth Eisner Engage Paralogue Stupidity
Great: Byleth is truly the Silver Snow Monarch and is definitely not an anti-theist edgelord throwing up in Rhea and the church's presence like fandom begs them to be (they repeat the legend of Seiros word for word as the trial is at a mimicry of the Holy Tomb)
Also they deadass invoke 3H's non-HDRI backgrounds by having it be static (thank you to my bestie Pani on d*scord for explaining 3H's weird microwave backgrounds - she studied animation at university)
Not Great: I still can't stand male Byleth, his stoner looks, or the vocal direction in either language; also they deadass didn't do this in their CANON GAME because of one fake-ass Red Emperor

today, i'm going to post a critical post about a lord in fe3h.
more specifically, i'm talking about a lord in fe3h who's family is deceased due to the actions of a shadowy group in the background. the event that caused these deaths have given this character trauma and poor decision making. this lord is complicit in awful things. this lord wants their step sibling dead. the actions of this lord can be best described as morally grey if you tilt your head, squint, and ignore at least 2 things.
everyone who talks about these lords always seem to either only demonize or woobify them. there is no in between. who am i talking about?

"the tendency of this fandom to only engage with what THEY want these characters to be#as opposed to what their creators are trying to do and the stories they want to tell" slap this on a bumper sticker, you just summed all cr discourse (about PCs at least) in 2 sentences
It truly is maddening (and it's not by any means exclusive to the CR fandom). The reason why the discourse always goes the way it does is that at the end of the day, the loud fanwanky people only see what they would do, if they were self-inserted into the story, as a valid choice; and they are, more broadly, fundamentally disinterested in what others think or feel. There are several examples of this, and the variety of spaces within the fandom that produce these ideas is an indicator that this isn't endemic to one specific group of people.
-Keyleth is an important character whose feelings and choices are validated by the other PCs and cast even if they still disagree with them, in spite of how she and her preachiness get in the way of the Murderhobo Jubilee? It's not because the cast are all friends and they genuinely believe Keyleth is valid and are interested in how these discussions and choices can guide the story. It's because Marisha is the DM's girlfriend, and also here's my totally unbiased theory that my pet favorite players Sam and Travis secretly hate Marisha and Keyleth.
-Vax's presence is still felt and nodded to in the post-canon VM oneshots? It's not because he was an important character who mattered. It's because Liam wants to make everyone talk about his tragedy because he has Main Character Syndrome. Scanlan Wishes for Vax to appear at the wedding? It's not because he cares about Vex or because Sam and Liam wanted a sweet tribute to Vex and Vax's relationship and by extension Liam and Laura's friendship. It's because Liam thinks Vex's life should always revolve around Vax, and Sam wants to enable him and jerk himself off as the one who facilitated it.
-Beauyasha and Fjorester become canon? It's not because the players wanted it and it happened naturally. It's because there was a secret behind-the-scenes push to "force" those ships to become canon instead, and like, Dani Carr is some sort of shipping puppetmaster who made the players do it, and "they" (whomever "they" is) decided to sink Beaujester or Widojest because it was "obviously" going to become canon before the pandemic hiatus gave them time to "make the corporate-approved ships happen".
-Beau and Caleb try to reform the Empire and dismantle the Cerberus Assembly from within? It's not because it makes sense for their stories or that people who would take this position regarding a corrupt government might have a valid perspective that differs from your own. It's because the people at Critical Role Productions LLC are all spineless neoliberal cowards who won't commit to real activism. The best activism, after all, is violent, and violent revolutions have always resulted in stable aftermaths, and the real world has never demonstrated that this mindset is foolish.
-Relatedly: Caleb doesn't kill Trent personally? It's not because the most poetic justice would be to deny Trent the thing he wants most from Caleb. It's because "Limo Brain" is too obsessed with tragedy to have the stones to do "what needs to be done".
-Asmodeus, DnD Satan, turns out to also be CR Satan? It's not because it fits with the cosmology and the lore; it's because Matt Mercer is too attached to the "establishment", and the Prime Deities should have actually turned out to be the bad guys because of my personal baggage about Western religion and Christianity they're a little mean to my blorbo sometimes.
There's a pattern here: fans had expectations that they'd built up for themselves after projecting and building up fanon and deciding what players meant before they explained themselves fully, and when the players strayed from that, they were derided for all manner of reasons. I think we're seeing that same pattern play out in C3 as the story progresses in a way that fans dislike, and in fact we have seen fanwank spread whenever someone does anything that interferes with personally catering to a) the favored ship and/or b) the favored philosophy. (Orym, Ashton, FCG, Percy, Pelor...all valid when they affirm the Fandom Opinions and all disdained when they don't.)
Don't get me wrong, I think there's a place for comfort stories that deliver a personal catharsis. And I'm not going to dismissively say "well if you want it so bad make your own" because, as an artist, I am very familiar with the fact that creating is hard and draining and sometimes you just need to consume instead. But when you become so wrapped up in yourself and your feelings to the point where your perspective is the only valid one, someone else's feels like a betrayal when it isn't. It's always "They aren't doing what we wanted and here's why they're terrible people because of it" and never "Hmm, why is this what the cast wants? Let's examine that."
This isn't a new phenomenon, but I think it ultimately stems from not assuming that other people can differ from you in major ways in good faith. There are a lot of reasons for that (some more understandable than others), but I think you rob yourself of the potential to enjoy something new when all you do is demand what you already want. No matter what you're doing or where you are in life, you tend to become a better and wiser person when you open your mind to what other people have to say, no matter how mundane the subject matter. Sometimes the stories people have to tell are challenging—and the only healthy way to deal with that is to engage with them on their own terms.

Look, Rhea is a tragic figure. I feel for her. Her trauma at the hands of Nemesis and the Agarthans is vast, and the slaughter in Zanado is completely unforgivable.
But until she's healed from that trauma and doesn't blame all of humanity for that nightmare, there's absolutely no reason she should be in charge of anything. Much less the very people she resents.
The Empire was created when the Church named Wilhelm its emperor, and the Kingdom is literally called the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus because it was founded by the Church as well. It's only by looking at the Alliance where you can see how the commoners especially feel about the Church's practices when they haven't been indoctrinated.
When the priest from The Eastern Church is trying to stress how they're different from the Central Church, he says:
Their church doesn't have an order of knights.
They don't believe in using force to chastise believers.
A noble house keeps order in their territory, and they have forbidden the use of any soldiers, even for self-defense.
You can reverse engineer these to describe how they see the Central Church in Leicester: Militant, violent towards its followers, and deceitful (claiming self-defense as a shield for its violent ways).
This is correct. The Church has a standing army and a school used to train child soldiers. It punishes criminals with execution more often than not. And it actively warps major events to make people see them in a certain light.
Yes, Rhea chose to keep the peace rather than openly hating humanity. That's not exactly a kindness when she 1) makes sure most people are reliant on the church for basic needs 2) restricts access to education based on who she can control (nobles vs. commoners) 3) bans advances in technology like the printing press so she can more easily prohibit the spread of knowledge and 4) creates clones and experiments on babies.
I understand she is traumatized. I understand she is in pain and trying to protect her people from another slaughter. But the simple fact is she's not even doing that well, because she's refused to heal. Everything she does against the Agarthans is basically whack-a-mole, and she only ever punishes who they manipulated.
Hubert found TWSD in 10 years! She's had centuries! I can't even say he's healed from his trauma to make that happen, but at least he directed it to something practical that got results. So no one would suffer like he had.
But Rhea? She's content to punish and oppress humanity for being manipulated by the Agarthans. Meanwhile, TWSD experiments on children too and the Church does nothing. When Lysithea and Edelgard are the sole survivors of murky circumstances, one would think that the Church would get involved. Even for aid. But no. They had their chance to make this right, and they chose to turn a blind eye.
I cannot rightly believe that she really cares about human beings when she treats the people most loyal to her so horribly. Even Seteth! She's telling Catherine to burn down a city with people inside in the Black Eagles route, she's never once tried to get anyone to teach Cyril to read and write (Seteth was the only one interested in doing that for him), and she hid all of her atrocities from Seteth because she knew that what she was doing was wrong.
Her compassion as the archbishop ultimately comes from a place of indoctrination and control. Understandable though it may be because of what she experienced, it's still wrong. And she shouldn't be in charge of anything because of that.

What Edelgard says to Byleth after Jeralt’s death really shouldn’t be defended as often as it is. Because for one, no it’s not genuine and “consoling them in her own way.” All she’s doing is telling them to get over it. And making it about her and her goals. “All I can do is reach out my hand for you when the time comes for me to move forward.”
Like the mental gymnastics you would have to go through to describe all the things she said as actually being kind and genuine is ridiculous.
Not to mention, she goes to you to say this. At least with Hubert, he’s all the way on the other side of the Monastery, minding his own business. So you have to come up to him to get his “Never been one for condolences” line. But Edelgard seeks you out just to say all these insensitive things.
And two, she’s actively lying to Byleth. Since she talks about how no new information has been found out about their enemies. And then tells them that she’ll let them know the moment she finds out anything new. While being fully aware that she is the one privy to the most information about the ones responsible for the death of Jeralt. So on top of already being insensitive and selfish, she’s also being disingenuous.

"You insulted my boss? Die, sinner!"
If anyone tries to tell you the Church of Seiros doesn't execute people for any offense, just remember:
Tumblr media
Catherine says she would kill a person just for being mildly disrespectful to Rhea. She's highly respected among the knighthood: they would follow her example.

replaying FE3H i find it interesting that Edelgard and Claude's preferred gifts show a varied range of interests and values but every gift Dimitri likes is related directly or indirectly to combat.
I think it speaks to Claude and Edelgard's plans for the future as well as the sides of themselves they keep hidden. Dimitri's facade as a martial hero-prince and the boar are not as harshly segregated as Edelgard's childishness and romantic nature or Claude's ambitions for his home.
Those aspects complicate Edelgard's need to be a stoic and invulnerable leader and Claudes' nostalgia and ambition for Almyra puts him at a disadvantage in the xenophobic Fodlan.
Meanwhile Dimitri's plan for the future would end inevitably in his death. This is the case even in White Clouds; he dosen't fully admit it until the holy mausoleum but he's living for vengeance for his families' death at Duscur. To that end, there's no conflict between the skills needed to maintain his princely facade and his true desire for blood.

Edelstans: “Edelgard detractors completely miss the nuances and morally grayness of her character! Fandoms can’t handle complex characters!”
Me: Oh I agree…
Same Edelstans: *Remove all the nuances and moral grayness from Rhea and make posts about how she shouldn’t have been an ally on any routes or even that there should’ve been a golden ending where all houses team up to defeat her* Me: You know what, forget it, I can’t sympathize with you anymore
