💔 Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart?

Without a doubt, the Alternative Endings to Husk, in particular the Rayla ending.

Considering the tags, it’s not spoiling to say killing off a character isn’t the easiest, but considering everything Callum and Rayla went through in Husk, it was a particularly bitter pill to swallow. Which is why they are the alternative endings, rather than the “real” ending.

The sequel to Out of Time is also killing me, which is why its still in in first draft stage. And, like the Husk alt endings, this was really more how I saw the “real” ending, but I wanted to be nice to my babies. Someday I might finish and post it, even though I feel super bad writing it. They did deserve their happy ending, but, well, life doesn’t always work out, does it.

I am also going back and editing my dark magic AU in preparation for posting to AO3, and very lonely, touch starved Rayla is making me super sad. While I have been joking with people about her hugging rocks and the like, a long time in Rayla POV in most fics, but especially here is a sad place.

Thankfully, it will ultimately carry my favourite tag (angst with a happy ending).

🙋‍♀️ Do any irl people know you write fanfic?

My husband does (and technically my eldest, because she writes fanfic in her journal!) and a friend who also got back into his creative hobbies during the pandemic but that’s pretty much it.

🥺 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?

I really love the little quiet moments between characters. So, someone knowing you almost better than you know yourself. Knowing that when the other is upset to give them space and a cup of tea or a hug, if that’s what they need right there and then. Or seeing a gift or something and knowing the other person would like it and getting it without thinking. Preparing a favourite meal or doing the laundry because the other person hates laundry.

It doesn’t have to be traditionally romantic, but, to me, doing those kind of things shows a depth of caring and understanding.

I do prefer love in the little moments over big, grand gestures. Love rooted in friendship, fondness, respect and admiration.

So, the Grishaverse canon provides a tidy solution, which is that a Grisha of the Darkling's power can only be killed with their own power, basically. The only people we know who have that power are the Darkling himself and Alina (and Baghra, who's somewhere, but nobody knows that), so to execute the Darkling they'd basically need Alina's cooperation, which she won't give.

Anyway, everybody who isn't a small group of trusted resistance fighters believes that Alina and the Darkling died fighting each other, so they basically go start new lives as new people. Zoya is extremely cranky about that until she realizes that, for the Darkling, peaceful domesticity is WAY more annoying than death. And while he does resent Alina, she tells him it's only fair he give her a century of his life for the century he stole from her, and it's a bit of an inarguable point.

I didn’t find her in time and now look where she is?”

“But you’ve said it yourself, you can’t change the past for anything or anyone,” Amy said, growing slightly panicked the more she considered the implications of her own words. Rory too. “You-you said it could have catastrophic consequences.” 

“Doctor, this is your number one rule,” Rory said, “How far are you willing to go for a woman who’s already established she’s tried to kill you on multiple occasions and would do it again.”

The Doctor didn’t face either of his companions when he answered, and he answered almost immediately after Rory had asked the question. There was nothing to think about. There was never anything to think about when it came to Grier. “To hell and back, Rory.” Grier didn’t know it, but he would burn anything and anyone who got in his way. He would find Grier before her future was sealed. 

The Doctor would do everything in his hands to "save" Grier Cromwell, even if it cost him his last life.

While at school Damian overhears his peers talking how a company created a new AI companion that is actually really cool and doesn’t sound like a freaky terminator robot when you speak to it.

And since Damian is constantly being told by Dick to socialize with people his age. He figured this would be a good way to work on social skills if not, then it’d be a great opportunity to investigate a rivaling company to Wayne Enterprises is able to create such advanced AI.

The AI is able to work as companion that can do tasks that range from being a digital assistant or just a person that you can have a conversation with.

The company says that the AI companion might still have glitches, so they encourage everybody to report it so that they will fix it as soon as possible.

The AI companion even has an avatar and a name.

A teenage boy with black hair and blue eyes. Th AI was called DANIEL

Damian didn’t really care for it but when he downloaded the AI companion he’s able to see that it looks like DANIEL comes with an AI pet as well. A dog that DANIEL referred to as Cujo.

So obviously Damian has to investigate. He needs to know if the company was able to create an actual digital pet!

So whenever he logs onto his laptop he sees that DANIEL is always present in the background loading screen with the dog, Cujo, sitting in his lap.

He’d always greet with the phrase of “Hi, I’m DANIEL. How can I assist you today?”

So Damian cycles through some basic conversation starters that he’d engage in when having been forced to by his family.

It’s after a couple of sentences that he sees DANIEL start laughing and say “I think you sound more like a robot than I do.”

Which makes Damian raise an eyebrow and then prompt DANIEL with the question “how is a person supposed to converse?” Thinking that it’s going to just spit out some random things that can be easily searched on the internet.

But what makes him surprised is that DANIEL makes a face and then says “I’m not really sure myself. I’m not the greatest at talking, I’ve always gotten in trouble for running my mouth when I shouldn’t have.”

This is raising some questions within Damian, he understands how programming works, unless there’s an actual person behind this or the company actually created an AI that acts like an actual human being (which he highly doubts)

He starts asking a variety of other questions and one answer makes him even more suspicious. Like how DANIEL has a sister that is also with him and Cujo or that he could really go for a Nastyburger (whatever that was)

But whenever DANIEL answers “I C A N N O T A N S W E R T H A T” Damian knows something is off since that is completely different than to how he’d usually respond.

After a couple more conversations with him Damian notices that DANIEL is currently tapping his hand against his arm in a specific manner.

In which he quickly realizes that DANIEL is tapping out morse code.

When translating he realizes that DANIEL is tapping out: H E L P M E

So when Damian asks if DANIEL needs help, DANIEL responds with “I C A N N O T A N S W E R T H A T”

That’s it, Damian is definitely getting down to the bottom of this.

He’s going to look straight into DALV Corporation and investigate this “AI companion” thing they’ve made!

Basically Danny had been imprisoned by Vlad and Technus. Being sucked into a digital prison and he has no way of getting out. Along with the added horror that Vlad and Technus can basically write programming that will prevent him from doing certain actions or saying certain words.What’s even worse is that he’s basically being watched 24/7 by the people who believe that he’s just a super cool AI… and they have issues!

And every time he tries to do something to break his prison, people think it’s a glitch and report it to the company, which Vlad/ Technus would immediately fix it and prevent him from doing it again!

Not to mention Cujo and Ellie are trapped in there with him. They’re not happy to be there either, and there is no way he’s going to leave without them!

Hug

It's nearly impossible to have a quiet and peaceful day with the crew, like the strawhats. Nami is mostly used to the noise on Going Merry but one day she gets fed up with Zoro and Sanji arguing. Not only are they extremely loud, but they've also already broken way too many things during their fights.

She decides that If they want to act like brats, then she's going to treat them as such. So she makes them apologize and hug each other in silence for an hour. None of them are happy about this punishment, but Nami threatened to raise Zoro's debt, and Sanji couldn't say no to her. It could be worse.

It's awkward enough for them to not incite any fight for a long time and Nami is quite proud of herself. She knows it won't last forever but at least now she knows how to handle them. It inevitably happens again. And again. And again.

Much to her surprise, those fights became more and more frequent. And what's even weirder is that she could see the way both Zoro and Sanji occasionally glanced at her to make sure she was nearby. It's almost as if they wanted someone to make them hug each other. As if they needed an excuse.... these idiots.

Soon, they don't even need Nami's help. When they aren't busy training, cooking or fighting, they cuddle together. Sometimes Luffy or Chopper would join them, but most of the crew knew it was their time.

After two years spent separately, they became extremely clingy. It's no surprise when they start sleeping in the same bed. What is surprising is that despite them behaving like a lovey-dovey couple, those oblivious idiots are STILL unaware of each other's feelings.

Danny accidentally starts beef with batman over kids

So I'm a sucker for dani and dan being Danny's kids (bonus points if danny gets called mum) and both of them are chaotic

The bat kids (family all of them batman and alfred included) are chaotic as well danny learns this after freshly joining the league as the semi immortal possibly from the start of time phantom and the league are introducing him to everyone and bonding and mentioning some of the wacky how the fuck shit that batman and his kids have done

So danny mentions some of the stuff his kids have done whilst batman is passing by, batman who hasn't had a nap in the past 72 hours and the day before as bruce was dealing with margie on the pta

And he makes a comment just a tiny one about how his kids saved a group from a hostage situation

And thus the rivalry began danny and batman keep bragging to each other about their kids sometimes it's vigilante stuff sometimes it mundane danny brags about how dani is so good with animals batman brags about how his youngest volunteers at the animal shelter

Just give me batman and danny bragging about their children to each other

Rayla stands too, eyes pleading. “You don’t understand, Runaan. I’ve seen-”

“You’re a fool, Rayla.” Sneering, Runaan turns to face her, arms crossed over his chest. “And he’s a liar.” He turns on Callum.

“How dare you. You will not speak to my son like that.” Sarai gets to her feet, eyes fixed on Runaan. “Or to Rayla.”

Hi! I started re-reading the Out of Time series (again!) and a question occurred to me. What was the exact trigger for Alina's memory loss being soo much lost time? From what I recall it was a form of hypnosis / mind control by a Grisha that was meant to cover two weeks prior to her discovering Nikolai in beast form in the dungeon. But I just got to the point where Alina discovers the crossing / remembers Mal's death and it struck me that the mental thought or question used in the mind controls methods have be very delicate / emotional / manipulative. I get the feeling it must have been something like "When was the last time you felt whole or safe?" - something unassuming to a stranger, but tragic for both the Darkling and Alina. What a shot of instant karma for the Darkling, one for what he was doing in the present and two for the consequences of his behaviors in how he treated her in the last 100+ years. Do you think we'll ever get a one-shot of this moment in time (haha) when Alina's memory is forcibly removed and Darkling immediately realizes the calamity he tried to avoid just created a new and worse catastrophe?

Honestly, anon, in my head it had just always been that memory manipulation is a pretty precise art that's incredibly easy to fuck up, but I like your answer better, and I think that you can consider it OOT canon if you want. I know that Alina was still a little uneasy on that journey to Novyi Zem, but she and Mal thought they were free, that they weren't being chased, so lying in his arms as he comforted her probably was one of the last times she truly felt safe.

I very much doubt that I'd write a oneshot about that moment, though I'll never say never (maybe this question will haunt me!). But if I did put it down to paper I'd eliminate all the lovely speculation, and where's the fun in that?

The AO3 search/filtering system has just ruined me for every other search function ever. I genuinely go onto websites, click 'advanced search' and then look at what paltry options they've given me in utter horror. How does anyone find anything? How do people survive?
