A non snappy response, aka to explain what I mean by that:

A lot of fanon tropes implicitly reinforce a very white, America-centric POV, and in a universe like the GFFA which lies somewhere between heavily Asian-inspired and gloriously multicultural, that really rubs me the wrong way. (To clarify upfront: it is not racist or whatever to enjoy these tropes or to write them, but it worries me when people don't even seem to realise it)

An obvious, innocuous-seeming example is the tendency to use 'Ben' instead of Obi-Wan's actual name in AUs — especially when others' names (Anakin, Mace, Cody, etc) aren't changed as well. The biggest difference between those names and Obi-Wan's is that Obi-Wan's is obviously Asian inspired, and theirs aren't. It's not something I expect most people even think about! But it always leaves a sinking feeling in my chest.

(Obviously if, like in canon, Obi-Wan is using Ben as a pseudonym while in hiding that's a very different kettle of fish.)

A larger example is how incredibly common it is to cast the Jedi as space-Christians — some common examples being focus on tenets (the Jedi Code, which is a meditation mantra, not a rulebook), the pervasive Catholic Guilt which is very explicitly Christian in nature, the emphasis on worship as ritual rather than a state to work towards, the generalised "all organised religion must be Bad" sentiments that feel very specifically ex-Christian in nature.

Thinking about one's own religion and expressing thoughts through fiction/art isn't an issue in and of itself.

The thing is, the Jedi are explicitly based on Asian Buddhists. Not just in set dressing, but from the ground up, from their beliefs and the way they act, to their clothing to the structure of their temple — to strip that away is to remove what makes the Jedi the Jedi. It's to remove the Asian-ness and replace it with something predominantly white. It implies that Asian influence shouldn't or can't exist in the GFFA, or that there's something inferior or wrong about Buddhism that needs to be "fixed".

Again this isn't something where I think that fan authors are sitting there going "muhahaha I'm going to be RACIST today", I know that's not what's happening. But when so much Jedi-centric content being produced minimises the Asian influence and pushes a western one, it starts to say "there's something wrong with this group, we're trying to erase it because there shouldn't be representation at all" — an issue of scale, at its core.

(Then ofc there's all the "the Jedi steal babies" and "the Jedi ban emotions" and "the Jedi need to be destroyed" which, entirely separate from the above, if you replace 'Jedi' with 'Buddhists' I'm kind of starting to wonder why you hate Asian people/Asian religions, you know?)

I won't even get into the fanon surrounding the clones, because that'd require me to talk about KT far more than I'd like to on any day, but especially today 🤣

i don't understand how some people interpret norman and ray's relationship as like. this vaguely competitive thinly veiled rivalry for emma's heart. or even that theyre not friends at All and only tolerate eachother for her. like did we watch the same show??? i know our brains have been rotted by lame heteronormative 2/5 star romances but yall.

Ray did not spend six years planning an escape and literally staking his life on the escape of a guy he tolerated. i guess i understand how people can think theyre not Really friends like they are with Emma from the scene where Ray gets revealed to be the traitor. but Norman's initial thought to use Ray wasn't some plan he'd just been Waiting to use to get his rival out of the way, it was just logic. Norman relies on logic above all else as a default, which is why he needs Emma, but thats a whole other conversation. Anyways- if nothing else, the time between it getting revealed that Norman's getting shipped, and him Actually getting shipped shows just how Much they All care about eachother. Ray was willing to break his arm and get sick to save Norman, he abandoned all logic for their makeshift plan to save Norman. Not to mention Norman's little speech about how he couldn't bare to have either of them die in his place. oh yeah also all the grief when Norman realized what Ray planned to do to trigger the escape. it Is a little more subliminal in the anime though so i can get that being missed. i know i missed it the first time i watched it

the thing about the thing is that any klaus ship makes more sense than kl*roline and those people have to act like that to compensate. and i do mean literally any klaus ship.

the originals edition? klaurora ate. would've done great things if not for elijah. klamille? ain't everyone's cup of tea but it still makes more sense for klaus to have an interest in her than that other blonde girl at the very LEAST from a psychology aspect and to get at marcel and kieran. klayley? even if the only thing they Ever did was hate fuck, it still would've been more in character. klaus and lucien, klaus and genevieve, all of them make at least some sense from a narrative point of view.

tvd? klaus and elena? would've been a dark and twisty ass romance, but would've been great to witness. klaus and bonnie? not only would it have been eagerly accepted, but it was WANTED by the actors too. klaus and katherine? c'mon. (if you come to me about 'he killed her family!!' i'm sorry but i do not care they would've been so fucking funny). klaus and stefan.

Explaining to a sprout why people have been doomsaying, since FanFest Vegas, a FF14 expansion not even out to play yet & it boils down to how much this fandom Hates a game & setting they spend so much money & so many hours of their lives interacting with for whatever reason. Yes critical thought & analysis of media you consume is good. But assuming Bad of future content isn't the same. It's attention-seeking. Also makes me wonder why some of y'all play something you claim to ideologically oppose. Stop hate playing/watching/reading, you'll be happier.

Cuz while there is some cause for some concerns, much of the wailing and gnashing of teeth are the same people who loudly complain about everything that doesn't cater to them, specifically, and their fanons/headcanons, or assume 1 writer will make or break a giant group effort, and/or that mistakes in the past mean it will never get better cuz the devs are just ignorant bigots, etc and so on and so forth...

While still interacting with the game and fandom.

It's OK; you have all your pals' social media and Discords to stay in contact. Stop buying into the sunk cost fallacy, and if you actually hate the game and SE so much, stop paying them money and wasting your precious time in the game. There's other media out there, other games to play.

And if you do still enjoy the game, maybe consider how much of what you put out into the world is actually constructive criticism (are you posting concerns on the actual forums where the devs actually look for feedback?) or just salt for salt's sake to get Likes from your followers.

It's one thing for a jedi apologist to oddly claim Slick was lying about wanting freedom and lying that the Jedi "kept [his] brothers enslaved", it's another for that someone to become increasingly hostile with their reblogs and tags just because others like me disagree as well as misrepresenting, dismissing and even calling other people's opinions "propaganda" like we're the Kremlin.

Hmm. My 'bad' I dared stumble on their blog in my feed and disagree with them on a post or two by saying I felt the Jedi could have done more for the clone troopers and Ahsoka in canon, which they started aggressively responding to weeks later.

But, the crowning moment of toxicity? They compared my point that I can criticise the Jedi Order, their actions and still enjoy Jedi characters while still acknowledging their flaws... to being 'homophobic', right during Pride Month. Since I'm gay, that is a gross tactic I can't abide.

Just great. Disingenuously using real-life, minority groups as a meat shield for your fictional, magical lightsaber favs really shows your priorities in life. Overzealous stans, whatever fictional character or group you're stanning, stop using real minority groups as meat shields to protect your feelings and your favourite characters from criticism.

i sometimes think about how fgo does canonically have guda drowning in bitches by sheer virtue of will in surviving this long and the occasional moment where we see guda get to be hardcore (like when they called the lion king a bitch to their face for instance) and i always think that my favorite moments of characters being attracted to guda are specifically when mash is part of the equation because it acknowledges how they're a package deal as well as showing that its not just surface level gacha pandering. well and truly inseparable where musashi is happy she has two hands and edmond is like "dont worry you protect their body ill protect their mind" and scathach has both of them as her prized pupils and that time kintoki got drunk with both of them and a bunch more specific examples with different characters. mash prepares the summoning ritual for the hoes and guda pulls in the bitches with their autism. all of gudas bitches are, in fact, also mashs bitches and vice versa. those artists who draw the two being poly w/ bageko are so correct.
